Re: APC ES-500 now APC ES-750
Hiyas! Thanks so much for your responses! Took the ES-500 back for refund. Now wondering what to do next. The ES-750 didn't work during the power outtage, wonder why? It didn't pop any warning lights or anything to let me know there was a problem. Not buying another one unless I know what was wrong with this one. My son has the identical unit and his worked fine. Any ideas? Should I buy a different kind? Tripplite? Belkin? Not good! Did you have the Energy Saver pref pane configured to shut the Mac down before the UPS ran out of battery power? And the USB/Ethernet cable connected from the Mac to the UPS? No, because I don't use that software any more. As I recall, it never worked properly. What I do is when the power goes out, shut the computer down manually. My son's doesn't have it installed either. In all previous instances of power loss, the power would go out, the UPS's would beep, but the computers would stay on. To be clear, I'm referring to Apple's Energy Saver pref pane, not APC's software. It's worked flawlessly for me on G4s, G5s, and Intel through 10.4 - 10.6. Silly question : is the battery plugged in? I once did that to one of our staffers, set her up with her new UPS (it was an old APC model) and went on my way. About a month later she stopped me in the hallways and asked What is that UPS thing supposed to do? Whenever we have a power glitch it just beeps once and the computer turns off. Me, VERY red-faced, go directly to her office and connect the battery ... Silly question: Is the computer plugged into the battery back-up side, and not the surge protector side? I don't know if it beeps on power failure when there's no load on the battery. Less silly question: Make sure you don't have something like a laser printer plugged into the battery side. Those pull way too much current starting up, and most UPSes will not work if they're plugged in. Im not sure what the ES series does, but otherones don't work at all, just immediately go into a fault mode. Test: Make sure whatever's plugged into it can take a power off condition and unplug the UPS from the wall. It should start beeping at you, and things should keep running. With bad batteries the ES-500 should beep at you occasionally and show a yellow (iirc, I don't have one of those in the office right now) Battery Fault LED. Batteries are relatively cheap and readily available at Batteries Plusthat's where we get our replacements, and the ones in those ES models are a standard size sealed lead-acid used in a lot of different equipment. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Current APC ES models will flash an LED and beep at you occasionally to indicate a failure state, including a dead battery. Re: APC ES-500 now APC ES-750 what do you all use?
thank you bruce and all! no silly questions with electronic equipment. i would say the main cause of most of my problems are things not plugged in :@* yes, ups was plugged in. yes, plugged into battery backup side, in master receptacle. no, no laser printer!!! horrors!!! no, it didn't beep and is in fact still green. but the battery is prolly dead. OK GUYS, WHAT BRANDS DO YOU PREFER? not sure i want another APC now, am annoyed with them. Belkin, Tripplite? On Nov 2, 2011, at 2:28 PM, Anne Keller-Smith wrote: OK GUYS, WHAT BRANDS DO YOU PREFER? not sure i want another APC now, am annoyed with them. Well, I can understand the annoyance but you ARE getting their low-end stuff. In our experience the ES series has been reasonably reliable in use, but our servers and our own workstations are protected by SmartUPS models, not the BackUPS series. The kicker is the cheapest of those is $330. http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SMT750total_watts=50 Batteries last a variable amount of time, but average about two-three years, and we usually get a couple battery swaps before they die of something else. Note, these are the ones living in hot dusty phone closets; our server racks have their own rackmounted ones that are very expensive but rock solid. I'm not sure anyone's low end equipment is any better. I've seen Belkin's stuff die quite quickly, and have no experience with Tripp-Light (only ever used some of their line conditioners on scientific instruments in the past. Those were really good, but IIRC quite pricey at the time. Again, higher end stuff is better.) -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Pharmacy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: APC ES-500 now APC ES-750 what do you all use?
OK GUYS, WHAT BRANDS DO YOU PREFER? not sure i want another APC now, am annoyed with them. Belkin, Tripplite? I've got 3 APC ES 550s and a 350 around here. Also have a Belkin. These are all the lower end models, I refuse to pay more than around $50 for a UPS. All have been working fine for years. The Belkin is interesting in that the battery that came in it was only a 5Ah, but the battery compartment was large enough to hold a 7Ah replacement. When looking for a replacement battery both were on the list. The larger the Ah the longer the backup power will last. I've never had a low battery indicator work yet. Every time I've been alerted to a bad battery is with a power failure and a non-functioning UPS. You didn't say which model UPS you were using, but more than likely you could swap out the battery from your sons working UPS and test it.
