OS X and OS 9 used the same disk format, so there is no issue there. The
installer CD will set the proper boot sector stuff to boot into OS 9 as part if
the installation.

I think you may need to use the Restore disks, not the 9.2 disk. The QS2002
requires 9.2.2, as it was the last Mac to boot into OS 9.

2016-01-18 Thread Tim Martin
This is do-able - I've got a QS & a QS 2002 - 800 (upgraded to dual 1.8)
that I rebuilt and upgraded with no original software disks ... it's just I
cannot recall now quite how I did it - and I did have bootable external
HD's and removeable drives (2G Jaz) backups

1) read up and check on the partition scheme appropriate for booting OS 9

2) If you have access to second classic booting machine put the QS into
target disk mode and connect by firewire - do the installs from the second
machine ?

keep us posted - it's a great machine - my hickey has been failing power
supplies ... with maxed out machines - replacements can prove prohibitive.

If memory serves, and it often doesn't, the install disks are machine
specific. Might want to try a generic OSX disk that supports classic,
ie Panther, Tiger, and use the OS9 folder and drivers included.

Need help installing and booting OS9 on G4 Quicksilver 2002

2016-01-17 Thread Brad Wait
Hi

I just bought a used G4 quicksilver 2002 power mac (this one:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_1ghz_dp_qs.html).

I want it to boot from OS9, and I don't really need to run OSX. I thought
this would be simple to set up, but apparently not.

Unfortunately, I bought this used without any install CDs. For the seller's
privacy, I wiped the hard disk by connecting the G4 via firewire to my OSX
laptop, and using the latest disk utility. This wiped any OS9 drivers from
the disk. The newer OSX disk utility would not let me install the OS9
drivers on the reformatted drives. There is no 'install OS9 drivers'
checkbox.

Two questions:

   1. IF I can find a bootable OS9 installer CD, will it install the OS9
drivers automatically to the reformatted hard drive? Or, will it not be
able to see the drive at all when it boots up?
   2. I need help getting a bootable OS9 CD. I found several ISOs online
that I burned to a CD using my OSX laptop. But none of ISOs appear to be
bootable on the G4. I am stumped as to why this doesn't work. Here are the
   ones I have tried:

   -

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/power-mac-g4-quicksilver-2002-restore-discs
  - http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=2109.0

Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks
-Brad

Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

2013-03-20 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks for the responses everyone.

I confirmed that the noise was coming from the CPU cooling fan.

I removed it, removed the label, applied about 5 small drops of 3-in-1 oil
to the bearing and worked it in until the fan blades were able to move
freely.

I replaced the unit, and it is much, much quieter now (it sounded like a
field of crickets before).

I'll go ahead and purchase a replacement.

Fans from electronics parts stores come with "tinned" (i.e., ready to
solder) leads, never with connectors.

If a connector is found, the fan was most likely surplus.

If it is the fan that cools the heat sink it is very easy to replace. About
$20.00 to buy. First I would determine whether it is just clogged with dust and
stuff, it may just need to be cleaned. My fan was clogged to the point that it
burned the motor out. I reseated the heat sink while replacing the fan using
Arctic Silver from Radio Shack. If you decide to replace the fan be sure and
save the power plug, my new fan came without a plug. FWIW

Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

2013-03-17 Thread Dale Hoffman
Bill,

You need to determine if it's the power supply fan or the main ventilation fan.
You can safely interrupt the spinning fan blade of the power supply (rear
perforated panel) with a narrow piece of wood (I use a bamboo "kabob" skewer).
If the noise goes away when the fan stops it's the power supply. You can
replace the integrated PS fan but it's not easy.
Power supply replacement is tedious and pricey.
If the noise continues when the PS fan has been stopped, you can replace the
the main ventilation fan.
Check also to see if you have a high-end video card with an onboard fan as
these can go bad and make noise as well.

Google the phrase "replacing mac quicksilver fan" for numerous related articles
including some from Apple Discussion forums.

Good luck,
Dale

It is a generic fan.

You will have to obtain a generic replacement and cut the connector and
cable off of the failed fan and solder it onto the replacement.

These fans are 12 volts, dc.

My 2002 Quicksilver is starting to make some noise associated with the CPU

Can anyone share experiences re: replacing this fan?

Is it fairly easy to remove, replace and/or repair (i.e., lube?)

I guess it depends on what one personally prefers…

And I don’t really think that firmware is an issue here: such an adapter has
to convert from the parallel ATA i.e. PATA or IDE to the SATA standard. It is
like RAM DIMMs to me. PC or Mac, U.S. or China… whatever.

Examples for adapters I would buy:
Digitus DS-33151
DeLock 61702
(see http://www.delock.de/produkte/G_61702/merkmale.html?setLanguage=en)

Interesting though, I had trouble finding product info in the English
language… Maybe these adapters (from Digitus and DeLock) are only common in
Europe. I cannot image that there are no such /cheap/ products available in
the U.S. though.

Anyway, I personally like to take the nearest supplier, so I can see (and

I’ve bought all my Macs after they’ve decided to go Intel… What came after 10.6
was a tighter integration/binding to the Internet, and the Apple App Store and
iTunes with all of Apples little gadgets and smart devices.

I neighter need nor do I want that.

IMHO, Apple went the wrong way. The hardware they built while in the PowerPC
era was IMHO the best, even if they didn’t realize it. So was the software (Mac
OS X went a very good way from NEXTSTEP over Rhapsody to Mac OS X 10.6, but
they went straight down into commerce right after. It’s only business – too
much for my taste.

So I’m happily running Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5 alongside 8.6 and 9.2.2 on
my G3 and G4 Macs, and Linux on my PCs.

You can also get such an adapter from your local PC store. These are standard
devices, which can be used on any IDE=PATA bus, be it in a PC or Mac case.
Even Amazon has them in stock.

Why bother with buying from China?

Available from MANY Hong Kong or Chinese eBay sellers are SATA-to-IDE
converters, which will allow a current generation SATA drive (of whatever
type) to appear to be PATA (IDE) to the host.

AN advantage of these converters is (are):

1) the PATA interface is 80-wire/40-pin, which has been used on Apple
products from the Blue and White G3, and on all later models,

2) "large" drives are supported, and

3) only one power connection is required as the adapter receives all
power, and it distributes it to both to the adapter itself AND to the
drive.

In that time-frame, Pioneer was about the best there was.

Today, you can get a super-multi Lite-on for about $20.

Parity will work but ECC will not.

Also, the RAM must be unbuffered and not registered.

Machines in the gigabit through Quicksilver era have just enough on-mobo
buffering for a total of seven loads (eight if you count the processor).

Which is why the 100 MHz bus machines have four RAM slots (but only three
PCI slots) whereas the 133 MHz bus machines have only three RAM slots (but
four PCI slots).

PC133 RAM in 933 G4 Quicksilver 2002 (QS2000) -- just like they said -- no ECC RAM support

2011-12-29 Thread turn
I'm sure anyone who has experience with this will know this already,
and many might even say "I'd told you so", but I'd like to confirm
that using PC133 CL3 ECC RAM in a G4 QS2002 -- DOES NOT WORK.

I was suspicious that I might be able to use one stick of non-ECC RAM
and then the other two sticks of ECC and that the motherboard ram
controller might somehow see the non-ECC RAM and just work. Well it
doesn't. No combination tested so far allows any of the ECC RAM to
work in the machine. Adding just one stick, in any order, with or
without non-ECC RAM prevents the machine in booting.

For kicks I tried the ECC RAM in a blue-and-white G4 (not sure if it
was 350Mhz or 450Mhz) -- zilch. Didn't work either.

I had been a bit hopeful because I found online someone's comment that
they had used ECC ram in their G4 Cube successfully.

Also I have noticed that in my G4 QS2002 that if I used three sticks
of CL2 memory the machine was crashing but that if I put that same CL2
memory in with one stick of CL3 the machine apparently slowed down all
the memory access and I had no problems then with that CL2 memory.

Anyway... thought that documenting this clear test might help somebody
some grief someday.

I tried ECC sticks from Micron, Samsung, and one or two others. None
worked. The irony is that when it was new ECC memory was more
expensive and now, apparently because so many servers have been
decommissioned, the used RAM market has much cheaper ECC memory than
the non-ECC.

Now if someone can come up with a hack to let me de-solder part of the
ECC stick to turn it into a non-ECC... that would be fantastic!

Leopard will be slower than Tiger but I think you will find it
accaptable. One thing you can do: after installing and updating
Leopard download and run Monolingual (freeware). Remove all languages
you don't use and remove the Intel architecture. You'll save a few GB
disk space and gain better performance.

On a 1.5 GB RAM QS 2002, 10.4.11 is the best choice.

10.5.8 is runnable, but it is slow.

Most likely, regarding your boot-up problems, is that the RAM provided for
you is bad, and/or incompatible with OS X (which is pretty particular of its
RAM - a failed install is a good indicator that the RAM is unacceptable for
OS X standards. OS X.2 requires a minimum of 128Mb (iirc) RAM. Boot up with
one stick at a time (using OS 10.2) and see if any of them are successful
(zap the PRAM and reset the motherboard while you're at it). Hopefully, at
least one stick will be good so you can proceed with installation,
admittedly rather sluggishly. Then get more RAM at the Swaplist. I would
avoid any OS upgrades (to 10.3, 10.4.x) until you are able to up the RAM,
and until you're able to check the firmware version.
HTH,
Dana

I would guess that too, perhaps even both sticks are no good. I have
had trouble in the past with brought in or purchased used sticks, so
I am ever cautious about them. They seem quite cheap new in
America. What sticks are they?

Very unlikely it's the HD. One HD failure mode would prevent the CD
from even booting. Others could cause a problem but much further along
than you are seeing. That isn't to say the HD is good, just that it's
not likely causing the problems you are seeing so far.

RAM is the most likely culprit. You have at least two DIMMs to get 384
Mb so try removing one then booting. If that fails then try removing
the other DIMM.

Also try un-plugging and re-connecting all the cables.

Try zapping the PRAM

Start up and hold down Command-Option-P-R

  and resetting Open Firmware.

Check the battery, a voltage reading below 3.0V and you should replace it.

Start up and hold down Command-Option-O-F

At the prompt type:

reset-nvram
reset-all

At this point the computer will restart.

Try <http://www.digikey.com> and <http://www.alltronics.com> for one.

You need one that is the same size (hole spacing and thickness) and
power (voltage and current).

Repairing a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002 and getting it running again

2009-08-30 Thread Robert Menes

Hi everyone, I have a Power Mac G4 (Quicksilver 2002, 800 MHz) that
needs a little repair work done on it.

My girlfriend got the machine from a neighbor of hers, and it needed
RAM and a video card. A friend of mine supplied the needed parts to me
(384MB of RAM and an ATI Rage video card; unsure of exact model). I
installed the parts into the machine today, and tried to power it up.

The first thing I heard was a horribly loud grinding noise coming from
one of the fans. It wasn't the fan in the PSU, but the second fan
that sits underneath the PSU. So when I unscrewed the metal cage
surrounding the fan, I discovered that the fan itself was badly cracked,
and the blades were grinding against the edge of the fan.

The fan part is a Sensflow DC Brushless; model # WFC1212B. This is the
first repair I need to make.

The second problem involves any attempt to install or boot Mac OS X. I
tried three different OSes: Mac OS 9.2, Mac OS X 10.0.3, and Mac OS X
10.2. Mac OS 9.2 starts, but then stops with a system error. OS X 10.0.3
starts booting, then kernel panics at the Happy Mac. OS X 10.2 also
starts, but then crashes at the grey Apple logo. I'm wondering if the
hard drive in this Mac may also be bad; no system is detected on it at
all. I even tried switching the drive with another (the original drive
was an 80GB Western Digital; the replacement is a 60GB WD). Alas, no dice.

Would anyone on this list be able to tell me where I can perhaps
find a replacement fan to replace the broken one, and also perhaps
have an idea what could be wrong with my system, and why any Mac OS
version I try running craps out? Thanks!
