Yeah, agreed. I also hope the accessible developer curse doesn't start

Oh, I forgot one. BSC had troubles with their web site. Although, that
wasn't holding up any games I know of. Just preventing us fans from

Re: [Audyssey] Important notice.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward

Well, eventually I suspect you will need to do so at some point in time
as Microsoft is introducing allot of new technologies in Vista like the
managed SAPI support, built in speech recognition, .NET Framework 3,
DirectX 10.0, and a bunch of new stuff that is not available on earlier
versions of Windows.
One thing that immediately comes to mind is support for the new hd blue
ray dvds. MS has already made a statement only Vista and later versions
will support the new dvds, and will not be making the technology
backward compatible with 2000, 2003, and XP.
Apparently, some of this is a clear attempt by MS to make a totally new
generation of Windows as different from XP as 95 was to 3.11.
Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Important notice.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
Light scribe is a feature of very recent dvd and cd burner designs which
allows you to flip the disk over and directly burn an image on to the
disks surface using your burners laser rather than using the more
traditional paper and ink labels. As a result the disks will have a more
professional look and feel since rather than paper the image is burned
on the disk just like manufactured music cds, dvds, etc.
It isn't something likely that we in the blind community would notice
but once I come up with digital labels and stuff for the USA Games
products my disks I ship out for Raceway, Montezuma's Revenge, would
look allot more professional and slicker than if I stuck an ink label on
it and dropped it in the mail.
Besides the main reason I got the new burner was rather than being able
to burn single layered dvds I can use the newer double density dvds
which gives me 9 GB of storage space per disk and not 4.

[Audyssey] Windows Vista

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Kim and all,
I am approving this topic as I am certain many gamers are going to be
asking the same kinds of questions.
Overview

Windows Vista is a totally new operating system, and is the first
operating system to offer a fully 3D graphical operating environment
Microsoft has named Windows Arrow.
The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has
been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds,
and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media content.
Windows Vista has an all new firewall which allows you to block all
ports you are not using to prevent hackers, crackers, trogen horses, and
other attempts to access your data and content remotely.
Windows Vista comes with the .NET Framework 3.0, DirectX 10.0, and
Windows Media 11, Internet Explorer 7.0, Outlook Express 7.0, Windows
Media Center, and a bunch of other new stuff never seen before.
In addition Windows Vista is the first and only operating system that
supports the playing of the new blue ray high definition dvds that have
just came out on the market in the USA. According to press releases from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray high
def disk technology.
Since .NET framework 3.0 is now a core component of the operating system
rather than an add on Microsoft has bundled the managed DirectX 10 and
Managed SAPI support for .NET enabled games and applications right out
of the box. No extra software required. Good news for Monty and Raceway
fans which are already using the .NET technologies as the core component
of those games.
Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech
recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate
emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad, etc..
I've read there is suppose to be some new features with Vista that
allows you to interface with the MS XBox 360, and do some special things
if you have an XBox as well.
One other cool feature I read about is Windows Vista is installed from
images rather than a triditional setup file so the os is litterally
extracted on to your hard drive, and ran and configured from that point.
Here is a general list of requirements for running Vista with Windows
Arrow disabled which I think most blind users would likely wish to do.
You need at least a 40 MB hard drive, 512 MB of ram, 800 MHZ processor,
a dvd disk drive, and a video card that supports 3D axcelerated
graphics. If you want all the really cool blue ray support and the
Windows Arrow desktop experience we are talking a gig of memory and
somethinglike a 1.2 GHZ processor, 3D graphics card, and so on.

Re: [Audyssey] Important notice.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Yes, anyone seaking to update to Vista needs a fairly modern PC to even
run it. Especially, with the new 3D desktop Windows arrow. If you run
Vista with the classic XP desktop you can ssqueeze with 800 MHZ and 512
MB of ram. If you run it using the 3D desktop you will need to basically
double that system requirement. It also needs 40 MB of hard drive space,
and 64 MB or better of vidio card memory. In short Vista is a system
resource hog, but on modern computers it will do fine. Just won't run on
anything manufactured before 2003 or so.
Also JFW 4.x will absolutely not run on Vista. Not even JFW 8. Vista is
a completely new animal and needs to be treated as such.

Re: [Audyssey] Important notice.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Well, I don't think most users will want to upgrade right away anyway.
The accessibility for Vista just isn't really out there yet. There is WE
6.1 beta, and Windows marrater, but Jaws users will have to wait for
Jaws next major release to have Vista support, and even then if it is
anything like WE the accessibility isn't 100% altogether there yet.
Probably needs a couple of screen reader upgrades to get the bugs worked
out of the new Vista and accessibility Vista has. While Vista has MSAA
backward compatibility it's using something new for all of it's
applications like I.E. 7 and Outlook Express 7 to name a few.
All of that said I think Vista is a good step in the right direction,
and from having tinkered with it in the past using narrater I think it
is a really cool os, and wanted a copy of my own to work on, play with,
and get use to even though access isn't 100% ready just yet. I still
have XP on my laptop so it's not like if everything blows up I won't
have a working system on hand. Although, I don't think I will have much
problems once Window eyes 6.1 full comes out later this spring.

Re: [Audyssey] Important notice.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
Well, the .NET Framework and .NET applications is something everyone is
going to have to get use to sooner or later seeing as Microsoft has been
promoting it since 2002, and has made it manditory for Vista, and beyond.
Honestly, I don't see any systems using 98 and above having much
problems with .NET provided the app is .NET Framework 2.0 compatible.
.NET 3.0 apps I believe will only run on 2000 XP, 2003, and Vista so 9x
users are going to have to update soon or be left in the dust technology
wize.
The entire point of .NET though is to bridge the gap between operating
systems and insure the app you run on Vista is still compatible with
2000, XP, etc without having to recompile, reset build flags, and a
bunch of other stuff. Just install the framework, and the app and away
you go.
Even though I am soon to have Framework 3.0 I will still be supporting
.NET 2.0 for a while to keep older systems in the loop and not alienate
those with less up to date systems.
Now, that MS has officially made .NET a core component of Vista you will
see more and more .NET enabled applications, and old VB 6 programmers
and anyone using old school languages will be left in the dust unless
they update there skills to VB.NET, C#.NET, C++.NET, etc.
Also don't be to suprised if you begin seeing allot more Vista features
popping up in new apps such as menu strips rather than menu bars, and
other new changes in the look and feel of newer applications.

I have no plans to upgrade to vista at the moment.
On a side note if you set your speech recognition right you can dictate

 Hello everyone,

backing up all my books, documents, game source code, product keys, and
everything else I will need for a complete and fresh installation of my
 desktop computer's operating system.
For those interested I am going to be upgrading my video card to an ATI
All In Wonder Pro 128 MB video card, will be adding an extra 512 MB of
ram, will be installing a new HP DVD duel layer burner with light scribe
ability, and once the hard ware changes have been made I plan to format
the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows Vista along with the
just released Window Eyes 6.1 beta for Vista.
After that I will be installing only the latest versions of the software
I use that I am certain is compatible with the new operating system.
Some things I have needed to upgrade anyway like AVG which is at version
7.5 and I am still running with 7.1. The Firefox version and Thunderbird
versions I have are not the newest, but not super out of date. However,
since I am going with Vista I will likely be upgrading patches and
updates for everything to make sure my new massively updated system will
 be pretty good.
After that all I have to worry about is after that all I need to do is
wait for the Window Eyes 6.1 full version to come out which I will
 certainly get asap.
 Cheers.

[Audyssey] goblin versus insain scientist

2007-02-22 Thread nicol
HI all
If I'm correct the goblin in sarah will be much trickier than the insain
scientist in sod. You can easily kill the insain scientist And in this way
avoid him taking your items. The similarity between the goblin and the
insane scientist: its both creatures that will rob you. The goblin robs you
of your money and the insain scientist robs you of your items such as med
kits, mines etc.
If I understand the manual correctly, the goblin will aparate after stealing
your money so you won't be able to trace him once he have disappeared.
The insane scientist in sod will never teleport. Once it took some of your
items it will try to run away but its still possible to follow it and kill
it to get your items back but once the goblin in sarah vanished after
stealing your money, its not possible to trace him.

Like in super liam, each level in danger city also comprises of acts. This

another similarity is that you jump across mines in danger city like you

nothing to dug. There's only people shooting at you and mines to jump

The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has
been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds,
and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media
 content.
According to press releases from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray high
 def disk technology.
Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech
recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate
emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad,
 etc..

Try to explore the rooms and press the switches. Try a bit more before

If you really want to know how to complete all levels, you could try to
contact some people off the list and ask them. I'll try to help you, but
only off the list. I think there has been too many tips, spoilers and hint
on this list to that game.

If you have MSN, we can just talk about the game there. I hope you

Hi,
I am pretty sure MS will be releasing a DirectX 10 and .NET Framework 3
for Windows 2000 and above, but Windows 9x is basically scrapped as far
as MS is concerned.
There is already a developers only release of .NET 3 for XP, and I don't
see devs jumping on 3.0 so soon after 2.0 was released last fall.
Even after I get Vista up and running I'll be installing the older sdks
to insure backwards compatibility with the older operating systems.

Davy Kager wrote:
I think that the .NET Framework will be released for WinXP too. And the same
goes for DirectX 10, however not all hardware support it correctly so
 there's no reason to upgrade.

Most Vista-standards will come out for XP either.

Re: [Audyssey] Important notice.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
I have no idea where you have gathered your information about the .NET
Framework, but it is very much incorrect. The .NET Framework itself is
completely accessible. As for the development ides VS 2003 and VS 2005
are also accessible provided you are using a fairly modern version of
Jaws or Window Eyes. If you are using something like Jaws 4 or 5 forget
it. With Jaws 7-8 or Window Eyes 5.5-6.0 then VS .NET is fine. I'd say
through end user experience Window eyes support for Visual Studio .NET
is superior to the half-hearted attempt Jaws is using.
As far as stibility from .NET Framework 2.0 onward it has been pretty
stable. Just because you may have had some end user bad experiences, can
happen with any piece of software, doesn't make it true the software is
deffective or buggy most of the time.
In fact, my experience in the field is I have very little problem with
the framework when end users were not running mised matched versioning,
and wasn't awareyt he framework needed to be installed prier to
installing a managed component for DirectX, SAPI, and some of the newer
technologies MS has come out with.
Bottomline I don't know what flaws you speak of, and I run several
Framework based apps with absolutely no trouble at all.
As for Vista's classic option it resorts to a XP style desktop. The
truly classic desktop option you are thinking of no longer really exists
as far as I am awayre. However, you can turn off the Windows Arrow 3D
desktop which is a major accessibility hangup at the moment which I will
certainly be doing.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
First, the answer is no. You don't have to run Vista from the dvd drive.
It can be installed or extracted on to your hard drive and run just like
any prier version of Windows. In fact Vista Home Basic and Premier are
setup to do this by default.
Second, keep in mind Microsoft has created several different versions of
Windows Vista, and each is a little bit different, and comes with
different applications depending on what you are buying it for. Here is
a quick run down of the most common versions.

Windows Vista Home Basic. This version is comparable to XP Home edition.
It is a very stripped down version of Vista, and comes with just the
basics. Should be good enough for the average computer user.
Windows Vista Home Premiere. This version is like Home Basic above
except it includes allot more multimedia applications and features. This
is comparable to XP Media center.
Windows Vista Business. This version comes equip with server side
applications, and apps sutible for small or large business and colleges.
Is comparable to Windows XP Pro.
Finally, Windows Vista Ultament. This version has everything plus some
extras not even available to Home or Business versions. This is
comparable to Windows XP Enterprise.
You should note all versions listed above come in 32 bit and 64 bit
versions. They also come in retail boxed or OEM versions. If you do the
math there is currently about 16 full versions of Vista, and several
upgrade versions to upgrade XP to Vista. So there is lots of options to
choose from if you are buying to update your system.
Personally, I chose the Vista Home Premiere as it was both in my price
range, and it comes with some extra bells and wistles not available on
Home Basic.

 Cheers.

 Subject: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

 Hi Kim and all,
I am approving this topic as I am certain many gamers are going to be
asking the same kinds of questions.
 Overview

Windows Vista is a totally new operating system, and is the first
operating system to offer a fully 3D graphical operating environment
 Microsoft has named Windows Arrow.
The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has
been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds,
and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media
 content.
According to press releases from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray high
 def disk technology.
Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech
recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate
emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad,
 etc..
You need at least a 40 MB hard drive, 512 MB of ram, 800 MHZ processor,
a dvd disk drive, and a video card that supports 3D axcelerated
graphics. If you want all the really cool blue ray support and the
Windows Arrow desktop experience we are talking a gig of memory and
somethinglike a 1.2 GHZ processor, 3D graphics card, and so on.

i have run four laptops and two desktops that have all had one issue or
another with the .net framework and accessibility.
it always tends to be the gui side of things.
i was running che's railracer game fine before i got this new system,
although it was the registration dialogs and the track editor programs that
i had problems with.
on this system whenever i run any .net based app it comes up with one of
those annoying error dialogs claiming that the program has encountered a
problem and needs to close.

as for the vs.net, again, on all systems of running it except on one of my
friend's computers, it would always crash and say it wasn't responding,
whereas on the friend's computer jaws was having a problem with it, saying
that there were errors in the script and acting up that way.
so on the six computers i've been using to run .net apps in general, and the
four computers i used to try out vs.net, it has always acted up one way or
another.

 Hi Damien,
I have no idea where you have gathered your information about the .NET

 Hi,
 Here is question 2.

What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you
 throw
 it away?

I will post the answer in a couple of days if no one guesses it, but I
seriously doubt it will go unsolved.

I got the super liam manual from someone. Just by reading the manual I
 get
the feeling that super liam works the same as danger city.
So for those of you who would like a manual of danger city, just read
super liam's manual and you will also get an idea what danger city is
 like.
Like in super liam, each level in danger city also comprises of acts.
 This
demo I downloaded from damion's server is only the first level, but when
reading super liam's manual I noticed the similarity between danger city
 And
 super liam.
another similarity is that you jump across mines in danger city like you
would jump across obstacles in super liam. I don't know if there is a
 dug
feature in danger city with down arrow, but in this demo version there's
nothing to dug. There's only people shooting at you and mines to jump
 over.

I think that the .NET Framework will be released for WinXP too. And the
 same
goes for DirectX 10, however not all hardware support it correctly so
 there's no reason to upgrade.

Most Vista-standards will come out for XP either.

 Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

Hi Damien,
Well, if all else fails there is always Narrator. that thing sucks
compared to Jaws or Window Eyes but it is garenteed to provide some
basic access to Outlook Express, I.E., and other Microsoft products.
So we aren't talking a total lack of access just not the quality of
access we are use to.
However, Win Eyes 6.1 is a high quality screen reader and it does work
with Vista which I will in all likely hood be using that.

i may be getting the machine i'm using, so this'll be my own, so if the

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: Trivia time #32

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
Actually, taking a photo with a camera makes the most logical sense.
Think about it.
First, when someone takes a picture it is commonly called taking a shot
or shooting his or her picture. Second, the film must be developed in a
dark room using chemicals which takes around5 minutes in a dark room
give or take a few. Finally, when a photo is finished the logical thing
to do is hang it on the wall.

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,
I'm very interested in your experience with .NET as I am not only a end
user but a developer using the technology in many of my projects. I
haven't experienced those specific issues you were talking about here,
but it sounds to me as if you were running a mismatched version of app
and framework or were missing some other core component the app
requires. Perhaps, I can solve your issue.
First, can you list the titles of the applications that failed to run
with the .NET Framework?
Second, what version of the framework are you running. Anything prier to
2.0 I personally don't recommend unless a developer has specified it is
absolutely necessary that you don't upgrade to 2.0.
Third, did you check to see if any other components were missing?
For example, when STFC came out everyone was getting that error, and it
turned out while they were installing DirectX 9 they had not installed
the DirectX 9 version required for .NET Framework applications. Which is
the reason I now do web setup installs for DirectX and specify right off
on my FAQ page install .NET and run this file which will sort out which
version you are missing and needs updated.
Fourth, as for Jaws did you install the VS scripts. If so I can tell you
that was sort of a mistake. I found Jaws ran better with VS 2005 without
scripts than with the ones FS offers. Seriously, I believe I could have
written better ones myself, but my Jaws scripting skills are pretty
rusty from not being used much over the last three years or so.
Finally, I don't think the issues you experienced under your current os
will happen under Vista. The .NET Framework is now a core component of
the os, and the DirectX that ships with Vista, DirectX 10, has the
managed libraries for DirectX already included. Vista also comes with a
managed version of SAPI for .NET applications, and well allot of the
extras you had to update in 2000, 2003, and XP is just there out of the box.
I'm going to be installing my .NET Framework apps as soon as Vista gets
loaded on this machine, and I will certainly let you know if they ran as
expected. I seriously doubt any issues with Monty, STFC, or Raceway as
everything should be up to date and be there already.

i have run four laptops and two desktops that have all had one issue or
another with the .net framework and accessibility.
it always tends to be the gui side of things.
i was running che's railracer game fine before i got this new system,
although it was the registration dialogs and the track editor programs that
 i had problems with.
on this system whenever i run any .net based app it comes up with one of
those annoying error dialogs claiming that the program has encountered a
 problem and needs to close.

as for the vs.net, again, on all systems of running it except on one of my
friend's computers, it would always crash and say it wasn't responding,
whereas on the friend's computer jaws was having a problem with it, saying
that there were errors in the script and acting up that way.
so on the six computers i've been using to run .net apps in general, and the
four computers i used to try out vs.net, it has always acted up one way or
 another.

 Hi,
 Here is question 3.

A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for
 over 5
 minutes. Finally, she hangs
him. But 5 minutes later they both go out together and enjoy a
 wonderful
dinner together. How can this be?

I will post the answer in a couple of days if no one guesses it,
 but I
seriously doubt it will go unsolved.

Lucky me! I'm going to order Hal v7.03, so if there was a v8 coming up... I
would be out-of-date again.

But no worries, because I won't make the huge upgrade to WinVista in the

Stil, even though I do rather fancy the blue ray support and internal
burning features (that expression has always bothered me), I'm not really in
too much of a hurry to upgrade, not until stuf I want to do becomes
impossible on Xp, or my Pc explodes and I need a new one.

The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has
been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds,
and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media
 content.
According to press releases from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray high
 def disk technology.
Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech
recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate
emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad,
 etc..

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

2007-02-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
A while back I began working on a Windows based screen reader core
mainly for myself. I am tired of paying the big bucks for Jaws or Window
eyes, Hal, etc when I could probably make something myself that would be
both functional, low cost, and have the features I want.
I honestly haven't gotten very far yet as I have been far too busy with
everything else that has been going on around here. Although, after I
finish with Monty and Raceway I plan to take to that project with a
vengence if I can.
I hope Window Eyes 6.1 will be the last version of a commercial screen
reader I'll have to upgrade to and with in a year or two I will have
something almost equal to it as far as getting the job done.
I'll likely start by supporting applications I use daily Firefox,
Internet Explorer, Outlook, Thunderbird, Word, Notepad, you name it.
After that assuming it is stable enough for others to get involved with
I may expand the screen reader to support other third party software
based on recommendations from any fans that might want to use it.
Anyway, that is my plan. Who knows what the future will bring, but I
certainly want to take a crack at my own screen reader.

There's only people shooting at you and mines to jump
 over.

Hi,
I beg to differ on the point of running JFW on Vista. I know of at least
one person who's running JFW 8 on Vista. I'm not sure which version, or
what features were enabled, but it is possible.
I personally will only upgrade to Vista when I get a new computer. I do
like the ideas of it, but I've got other things to save up my money for.

Thomas Ward wrote:
 Hi Jim,
Yes, anyone seaking to update to Vista needs a fairly modern PC to even

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

2007-02-22 Thread Dark
Well if you can put one together why not? it might be an interesting
project in it's own right, though I hope once Monti and Raceway are done,
you'll also devote some developement time to the Usa game engine and the
asteroids game, I'm interested in both.

One thing I've always liked about dolphin, is their rather flexible
deffinition of upgrade

Sinse I have a license with them, when my old laptop gave up the ghost, they
gave me a complete copy of Hal v6 at the price of an upgrade to install into
my desktop. Ditto with the new work Laptop I've just acquired.

sinse new version upgrades are only about£100 (about Sixty or seventy
dollars I think), where as initially bying Hal would cost six or seven times
that much, it's certainly helpful for keeping my screen reader up to date.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.
