Interesting ... is that the only thing you're having trouble training? You
might want to check your marks of death, since if you have any you can't
train anything. That's the best I can think of at the moment.

Re: [Audyssey] Building gaming pcs

2007-02-25 Thread Che
My last 5 systems have ben Dells including desktops and laptops. I have
had not one single problem with any of these systems, and I am able to spec
them out with a Dell representative to get the components I want, for
instance I got a gig of ram, an Audygy 2 audio card with a Raid hard drive
system on my last desktop at a very good price.
Before going to Dell, I used to build my own systems as well, and while
you do save a few bucks, I find the Dell systems have performed better and
with less incident with very high quality components, and I would reccomend
them to anyone looking to buy a system with the minimum of fuss.
I would at the same time highly reccomend not buying a system at Wal Mart
or CostCo or wherever as their prices are low for a reason" they use cheap
components and cut corners at every opportunity, as friends of mine can
attest to who have had nothing but trouble with their Wal Mart junk.
The other two big players out there are Hewlett packard and Gateway, I
think HP has a good product, but Gateway has been notorious for having power
supply problems, but I haven't checked into that in the past few years.
Any way you go these days though, you are going to get a screaming fast
computer for a very reasonable price, it is hard to go wrong no matter what
route you choose, even the Wal Mart crap is fairly reliable.
  Rock.

hero's strength, the mother's resilience, and the poor man's arm. It cannot be

[Audyssey] Building gaming pcs was Important notice.

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
I've generally found custom building your own pc, especially a gaming
pc, is much more reliable, and is more advanced than any store baught
solution manufactured off an assembly line from Del, Compaq, HP, etc...
You litterally get to choose every item that goes in to the computer
motherboard, processor, sound card, hard drive, etc.. You can pay as
much or as little as you wish.
For example, the Maxtor hard drives are usually cheaper than Quantum and
Western Digital, and sometimes show up in Wal-Mart e-machines. Well, I
happen to know from personal experience the Maxtor hard drives have a
very high failior rate where as Western Digital has been very very reliable.
Another area that really matters to us is the quality of sound.
Especially, when playing environmentally ritch games like Shades of
Doom. Your typical Gateway or Del computer gives you an AC-97 chipset.
Ok, for most users, but are crap for games. Instead of going that route
you can just pay the bucks and have an Audegy or X-Fi sound card which
produces extremely ritch audio.
Finally, if you become a computer hobbiest, home builder, etc you can
get discounts on software which allows you to upgrade faster than the
general public. Me upgrading one of my systems to Vista this early.
It is this ability to pick and choose everything that makes a custom
build system much more powerful in the long run. The person who knows
about building computers can often pick and choose higher quality
materials which ends up with a more solid and robust system.
Having been building systems for myself and others for the passed 10
years one thing you get to know is different manufacturers products, and
can actually bench test them side by side. For example, AMD processors
are generally pretty good, but I think the Intel Pentium sometimes does
a bit of a better job, but at a much higher price. However, if cash is
tight the little bit of edge from the Pentium isn't worth it.

[Audyssey] to thomas ward, pocket screen reader

2007-02-25 Thread Josh
Hi Tom,

I just had an idea. When you complete your free screen reader project for
desktop pcs, wil you make a freeware screen reader for pocket pc windows
mobile? That way if blind people could not afford to buy mobile speak pocket
or pocket hal or jaws and pacmate, or a braille note, they could have a
freeware screenreader, all-be-it not as powerful but still very useable, to
use on their PDA?
Then a blind person would only need to shell out $50 get a PDA on ebay and
put pocket thunder, pocket NVDA, or pocket whatever you'll call your screen
reader onto their PDA and just use it.

[Audyssey] BASEBALL RULES

2007-02-25 Thread Phil Vlasak
 BASEBALL RULES

Baseball is played by two teams, each of which has nine players
playing at one time. The object of the game is to score the most
runs. A run is scored when a player is successful in travelling
around the three bases and reaching home plate.

Each game is divided into nine segments called innings. Each
inning is divided into two halves. In the first half, sometimes
called the top of the inning, the visiting team's players play the
offense and bat, while the home team pitches the ball to each
batter and plays the defense.

When a batter fails to make it on base successfully, he is called
"out." When three batters are out, the teams reverse positions and
the home team is at bat in the bottom of the inning.

The following statement of the rules is divided into four sections:

  1. Field and Equipment
  2. Personnel Involved
  3. Rules of Play
  4. Definitions

1. FIELD AND EQUIPMENT

*The Playing Field

The playing field is composed of an infield and an outfield. The
infield, often called a diamond, is actually in the shape of a
perfect square. It stands on one of its points, with home plate at
that point and the three bases, called (reading counter-clockwise
around the diamond) are first base, second base and third base, at
the other three points.

The two lines that form the V shape of the bottom half of the
diamond are extended beyond the diamond until they reach the fence
or wall at the perimeter of the field. These are called foul
lines. The outfield is the area beyond the diamond, but between
the foul lines. All of the area between the foul lines, both in
the infield and the outfield, is called fair territory, and the
ball is always in play when within this territory. The area
outside these lines is called foul territory.

The foul lines are white and any ball hit by a batter and landing
on the fly on the line or within the lines beyond the infield (even
if it then goes into foul territory) is in play. Any ball
remaining on or within the lines in the infield is in play.

Only balls hit in the air in foul territory that do not go into the
stands are in play. In new ball parks, the minimum distance down
the left and right field lines is 325 feet and to center field is
400 feet.

*Bases

Home plate, which is at the bottom corner of the diamond, is a five
sided 17 inch wide slab of whitened rubber. The other three bases,
which occupy the other corners of the diamond, are 15 inch square
white canvas bags usually stuffed with sand. The bases and home
plate are 90 feet apart.

*Pitcher's Mound and Rubber

A player on the defensive team, known as the pitcher, pitches the
ball to each batter on the offensive team. He pitches from a mound
18 feet in diameter and elevated ten inches, called the pitcher's
mound, located in the center of the diamond.

A slab of rubber measuring two feet long and six inches wide,
called the pitcher's rubber (or plate), is located at the top of
the mound. The pitcher must throw the ball with his foot on this
rubber, which is 60 feet and six inches from home plate.

*Batter's Box

The batter's box is a rectangle formed by white chalk lines, called
the batter's boxes are on the left and right sides of home plate.
Each is four feet wide by six feet long. A batter must stand
within one of these boxes while batting.

*Uniforms and Equipment

Each player must wear a uniform distinctive to his team, with no
emblem that may be mistaken for a baseball. A player may not wear
any glass or polished metal object. Each batter and base runner
must wear a protective helmet. The catcher wears a face mask, a
chest protector, and knee and shin guards.

Each fielder may use a leather glove. The catcher usually wears a
wider and rounder glove called a catcher's mitt, and the first
baseman usually uses a longer and narrower glove called a first
baseman's glove. The players may wear shoes that have the normal
toe or shoe cleat plate attached to the toe or heal of the shoe.

The bat is a long rounded Ash wood implement with a smooth finish
and must not be more than two and three quarters inches in diameter
at any part, and not more than 42 inches long. It may be treated
at the holding end to improve the grip. The ball weighs between
five and five and one half ounces and is nine inches in
circumference. It has a cork center around which is wound yarn and
two strips of white cowhide stitched together 216 times.

2. PERSONNEL INVOLVED

*Fielding Positions

There are nine fielding positions on a baseball team:

 1. Pitcher - throws the ball to the batter and is at the
center of the infield.

 2. Catcher - catches the ball immediately behind home plate in
front of the umpire and is usually crouching or kneeling.

 3. First baseman - stands near first base.

 4. Second baseman - stands near second base, usually to the
right of the base.

 5. Third baseman - stands near third base.

 6. Short stop - sta

The thing is that ms is getting pushed around by the music industry.
Lets face it all those types are business types, sure the law is clearcut but
there is probably a translation issue when this crosses to computer code.
What will happen is that noone will like ms vista and other things and ms will
have to back down.
Its funny that the music industry can push ms around I mean if ms just told
them to go away they couldn't do much, I mean people have tried and faled to

Hi josh. If you want to get the ball in the hole practice counting in two's
e.g. 10 feet 2 4 6 8 hit space on 10 and you should get it. You may need to
practice the speed at which you count but once you've got it you'll be

Hi,

Is there a walkthrough for Jim Kitchen's golf game? When I reach the green I

never get the ball in the hole. Also, will Jim make a mod for his game, or
re-write it so instead of a female umpire there's a male umpire so it sounds

more like a playstation game or pc game?

Re: [Audyssey] jim kitchen's golf game

2007-02-25 Thread Dark
Hi Jim.

Personally, I really like the golf game precisely because! it takes practice
to get any good scores on the course. this is rather unusual, because sport
and sports games aren't usually my thing, but I just find the golf game good
fun to play.

I've tried the Baseball game, but being both from the Uk, and not really
into sports, I'm afraid I found it rather difficult to know what was going
on. I get the principle that someone boles the ball, - or is it called
pitching? and the batsman has to hit it while another player runs round the
bases to score, however there are some things I find rather confusing. For
instance, how come sometimes the ball is court the player is out and
sometimes not? And what does "Stealing" and "bunting" mean?

Perhaps at some point you might considder updating the game with some basic
rules ofBaseball for people not familiar with the game and it's terminology,
the way you have in the Golf game.

all the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Sryth Lothren whereabouts

2007-02-25 Thread Mongwen
Hi AC. Lothren is on the same street as those actors. Go there and wander
around a bit.
The icons can only be used on certain items and you will not have any of
them yet. They must be bought in the place that will become known to you
when you make Lothren's acquaintance. Other things will be made known to
you then, too.

Hi Yohandy,
Think again.
Someone already cracked drm a week after Vista came out, and it was
highly publicised. No doubt MS is turning green, and moaning about all
the work that was just flushed down the toilet by a cracker who decided
drm sucked and found a way to get around it.
Bottomline every programmer knows if you can secure it someone is out
there who can crack it. As long as security is software based it can be
subverted.

It is Microsoft's name for there knew ultra paranoid digital copy

It is suppose to protect the illegal use of dvds hd dvds, and copying of
them, but people have already broken it of course. As usual a pointless
piece of software put there to stop hackers and crackers that eats CPU
power for no good reason.

Re: [Audyssey] New programming language. sounds promising.

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
It can compile exe files from what I have read on the FAQ, and the
author mentioned writing games, but I don't honestly see really complex
games being designed. Especially, games where there are several game
characters, weapons, etc involved like an rpg.
One of the things I did not like about this simple language is it takes
us right back to the bad old days of structured programming rather than
object oriented programming. Why is that bad?
Well, in structured programming generally speaking for every game
character you created, weapon, etc had to have it's own variables. Even
if they were placed in a struct, (structure,) they were not very safe as
they were publically visible to the rest of the program, and risked
being over written accidently.
When object oriented design came out it simplified things for
developers by arranging variables and functions according to classes,
and were referenced by an object name. The end result was you could use
the same variables over and over by creating a new instance of them, and
there were greater protection involved since each variable, function,
could be restricted to public, private, or protected status.
I suppose I could go on and on about object oriented design verses
structured design, but needless to say it is just better suited for
writing games. You can refere to that game character, weapon, but a real
object name, such as vader, skywalker, r2, leia, etc rather than a
list of associated variables.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Actually, people have already been there and done that. A week after
Vista hit shelves of your local computer and office supply store the
internet lit up with all sorts of cracks for drm to play illegal copied
content as well as unlock full premium content.
Am I worried about drm. Not to much. People have already found ways to
get around the drm stuff in some cases, and it is all there on the
internet for interested parties.

 Hi Kim and all,
I am approving this topic as I am certain many gamers are going to be
asking the same kinds of questions.
 Overview

Windows Vista is a totally new operating system, and is the first
operating system to offer a fully 3D graphical operating environment
 Microsoft has named Windows Arrow.
The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has
been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds,
and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media
 content.
Windows Vista has an all new firewall which allows you to block all
ports you are not using to prevent hackers, crackers, trogen horses, and
other attempts to access your data and content remotely.
Windows Vista comes with the .NET Framework 3.0, DirectX 10.0, and
Windows Media 11, Internet Explorer 7.0, Outlook Express 7.0, Windows
Media Center, and a bunch of other new stuff never seen before.
In addition Windows Vista is the first and only operating system that
supports the playing of the new blue ray high definition dvds that have
just came out on the market in the USA. According to press releases from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray high
 def disk technology.
Since .NET framework 3.0 is now a core component of the operating system
rather than an add on Microsoft has bundled the managed DirectX 10 and
Managed SAPI support for .NET enabled games and applications right out
of the box. No extra software required. Good news for Monty and Raceway
fans which are already using the .NET technologies as the core component
 of those games.
Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech
recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate
emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad,
 etc..
I've read there is suppose to be some new features with Vista that
allows you to interface with the MS XBox 360, and do some special things
if you have an XBox as well.
One other cool feature I read about is Windows Vista is installed from
images rather than a triditional setup file so the os is litterally
extracted on to your hard drive, and ran and configured from that point.
Here is a general list of requirements for running Vista with Windows
Arrow disabled which I think most blind users would likely wish to do.
You need at least a 40 MB hard drive, 512 MB of ram, 800 MHZ processor,
a dvd disk drive, and a video card that supports 3D axcelerated
graphics. If you want all the really cool blue ray support and the
Windows Arrow desktop experience we are talking a gig of memory and
somethinglike a 1.2 GHZ processor, 3D graphics card, and so on.

Re: [Audyssey] sryth game master not responding

2007-02-25 Thread Bryan Peterson
Did you save the game after getting the armor? That might be the problem
right there. The game automatically saves your Proving Grounds scores but it
might not necessarily save any items you get unless you yourself save the
game.
As for the GM not responding, he has a very tough spam filter and some
there are occasions, rather frequent I've noticed, where the messages don't
even get into his Inbox. He's also an extremely busy guy, seeing as how he's
the only one working on Sryth. Don't get discouraged though. When he does
get messages and has time to respond he's usually very helpful.

Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Actually, the drm is supposed to restrict premium content files. A huge
mistake for Microsoft I think as anything Vista thinks is premium it
either refuses to play or restricts the quality.
Why? I have no idea, but MS has become copyright paranoid in their old
age. This is compounded that the music and movie industry is now
influencing the software designs, and we are talking non-programmer
types telling Microsoft how to write it's software.
The drm stuff is still buggy. I have heard horror stories of musicians
and home video enthusiasts being locked out of there home made content
just because the drm screwed up and could not verify the legality of the
content. I imagine MS got some not so suddle complaint's about that one,
but after reinstalling Vista the content in some cases then worked as
the drm finally let it pass.
It is stuff like this is the reason Vista is only going on one of my
systems until I can fully test all of the new drm stuff and see the
reality of how much it effects the every days users life.
I've heard everything Vista is really awesome to it out right sucks and
everything in between. The only way to know is by testing it yourself
and drawing your own conclusions.

Hi Damien,
I was thinking something along the same lines. Everything thinks the
simple language is the most awesome, but if they were exposed to a true
qualified language they would realise very shortly how much was taken
out of the simple languages to make it simple.

I'm guessing, if you learn the language. It's supposed to be a full blown
language. I'm going to try it and see what happens.

SiMPLE - the computer programming language for kids. I've read a bit

it, and it definitely sounds interesting. Here's the site.

Re: [Audyssey] New programming language. sounds promising.

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Yohandy,
The new simple language looks cool as gfar as the advertisements about
it goes, but being a developer I am a bit sceptical as to it's true
strength and ability to design a wide range of powerful applications and
games. Although, it does contain a stripped down C++ compiler which
gives it some better features than just a off the wall simple amatures
language.
However, two things that concerns me about this simple language is it
doesn't mention anything about being able to include third party
libraries such as DirectX, Sapi, etc which are necessary for designing
the kinds of games we on this list are interested in. If he is using
something like com audio in his language which comes with Windows then
accesible gaming using this language will be virtually impossible as the
audio playback is not advanced enough for 3D audio environments, support
for joysticks, etc.
Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] New programming language. sounds promising.

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
According to what I have read on the language the author stated some
ability to write games, but I have no idea if that extends to accessible
games, or to how high quality you can make them.
In all seriousness I think a blind computer user interested in languages
is better served by using a mainstream language, compiler, and tools.
Although, C#.NET might seam daunting at first I think a language like
C#.NET is a very good beginner language for most amatures. It has all
the features of a full programming language, is much simpler than C++,
and all the really tough stuff it contained in the framework, and the
framework carries out the tough stuff.
Alternatively VB.NET is also is pretty strong, easier than most
languages, and my only beaf with it is that VB's sintacs is based on the
basic still rather than the C/C++ style sintacs.

The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it
 has
been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds,
and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media
 content.
Windows Vista has an all new firewall which allows you to block all
ports you are not using to prevent hackers, crackers, trogen horses,
 and
other attempts to access your data and content remotely.
According to press releases
 from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray
 high
 def disk technology.
Since .NET framework 3.0 is now a core component of the operating
 system
rather than an add on Microsoft has bundled the managed DirectX 10 and
Managed SAPI support for .NET enabled games and applications right out
of the box. No extra software required. Good news for Monty and Raceway
fans which are already using the .NET technologies as the core
 component
 of those games.
Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech
recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate
emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad,
 etc..
I've read there is suppose to be some new features with Vista that
allows you to interface with the MS XBox 360, and do some special
 things
if you have an XBox as well.
One other cool feature I read about is Windows Vista is installed from
images rather than a triditional setup file so the os is litterally
extracted on to your hard drive, and ran and configured from that
 point.

I doubt it. It said that if you're a C++ programmer, you can use it to
compile C++ code as well. So I doubt it's as bad as autoit. lol

Well I haven't tried it yet. The FAQ says that it can compile executables.
It didn't say anything about audio games, but it can handle audio, so I'm
pretty sure it can.

digital rights management. It's put in place so that content such as mp3s
can only be played on your computer and cannot be coppied or shared. But
there's software to get around it.

According to press releases
 from
MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray
 high
 def disk technology.
One other cool feature I read about is Windows Vista is installed from
images rather than a triditional setup file so the os is litterally
extracted on to your hard drive, and ran and configured from that
 point.

Hi Josh,

No, there is no walk through for my golf game. I think that the best thing
that you could do is to practice on the putting practice green. Putting is one
of the more difficult aspects of the game of golf, but with practice you can
get pretty good at it in my game.

No, sorry no mod for my baseball game and I am going to send Kathy after you.
Personally I thought that she did a great job for the voice of an

Hi Thomas,

That is cool that you can build your own computer and get a discount on the
price of the OEM software. I have never built a computer. Took one apart once
though. My brother used to build computers for me. The dos computer
was good for eight years. The windows only two. I have been very happy with
both of my Dell computers. I have never even broken the seal on either of
them. Just plug in the Triple Talk USB synthesizer, joystick or external hard
drive and away I go. No need to see what's inside.

Computers run on smoke. Yep, that's why that if you see all of the smoke coming
out of your computer it ain't gonna run no more.

[Audyssey] sryth game master not responding

2007-02-25 Thread Storm Shadow
HI Everyone,
I have emailed the game master on several occasions about different problems I
have been having in the game. recently I completed all the proving ground
events. In one of the proving ground events I was given some armor this was
special armor it was magical. I checked to see if I had the armor after I got
it and it was there I shut down the game and next time I logged on the armor
was missing. Like I said the game master has been non responsive to any of my
request. any help on this matter would be appreciated thank you all for any
help.
Regards,
Steve Cullen

I have never heard something like that.
There is all this drm and antipiracy things that the music and video industry

Hi Janet and your all.

I really understand your frustrations to find the right way in TechnoShock.
I can help you alot with a little hint you can use in most of 3d games:

If it's possable to walk in all 4 directions in a game and if you can
sidestep, don't turn around with your arrow keys when you come to a wall.
Yes, you do it in the real life, but it's not a good idea in games. Why not?

Here comes an example:

You are heading north. You walk forword in a hallway, and come to a wall.
You turn right with your right arrow key until you can walk forword again.
The next time you come to a wall. You notest there is hallways to the left
and right. You turn left and walk forword. You continue and you know you
have turned: left 3 times, right 6 times. Hmm, where are you in this large
map??? I think you are very lost too.

Lets try with sidestep:

You are heading north. You walk forword in a hallway, and come to a wall.
You walk right useing sidestep until you can walk forword again. The next
time you come to a wall. You notest there is hallways to the left and right.
You walk left and walk forword. You continue and you know you have walk:
left 3 times, right 6 times. Now you are at the same point you are, if you
just turn in the directions. But what is the difference?

If you have lost your directions and you don't know where you are, you know
one thing: You are still heading north because you have not turned into
another direction. Therefore, you know where you are at the map, you have a
little idea about where the different hallways are, and you have a very big
chance to find the right way back to your startpoint again.

I hope some of you can use this little hint so you can find the right way in
the different games.

I hope it makes sence for you all. It it doesn't make sence, I hope someone
can explain it in other ways. I'm not very good to give out describtions in
english.

If someone can use this little hint, I'll be glat to hear from you.

Best regards Søren.
