[Audyssey] Entombed Beta 1 Released

2009-11-10 Thread Jason Allen
Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that my audio RPG Entombed release beta 1 is now
available for download. Entombed is an audio game where you take on the role
of a party of adventurers braving the depths of a nefarious dungeon.
Characters have loads of customization, gain experience and levels, and
accumulate abilities and magic. However, a word of caution, the game is
still in testing and fairly unstable. Save often!

You can find the documentation here: http://wiki.blind-games.com
The game download is here: http://www.blind-games.com/EntombedSetup.exe

Please let me know what you think!

Thanks!

[Audyssey] Entombed Intro Trailer

2009-11-10 Thread Jason Allen
I almost forgot to mention that Entombed's intro trailer can be found here:
http://www.blind-games.com/EntombedIntroTrailer.mp3

This sets the stage for the origin and purpose of the dungeon. A game play
trailer is still in the works. However, you can always download the
game andtry it out for
yourselfhttp://www.blind-games.com/EntombedSetup.exe
!

Thanks to Jeremy Harley for the great voice over work and mixing.

Cheers!

2009-11-10 Thread Sylvester Thomas
Hay Thomas! Thanks for the tip, you too Phil and Shawn for the links to the
drivers. Tom, I downloaded the direct exe from your web site and when I
click on it it ask me for a location to store the files, can this be any
where on my system? Secondly when I do pick a location and click on the zip
file there are five files in there and none of them are a set up file or any
type of self running file, so I am wondering what to do with those five
files that are opened up. Thanks once again for your help with this. Game

Hi Sylvester,
I'm not quite sure how to solve your sound card issue, but I'm fairly
certain it isn't a DirectX issue. One thing I think you probably should
have not of done is installed an older version of DirectX. That tends to
cause more problems than it is worth so you will want to install an
upgrade as soon as possible to insure you didn't break anything by
downgrading like that.
Anyway, if you want to know the current build of DirectX you are running
you need to run the dxdiag program. Unfortunately, it isn't very specific
in terms of weather you have say a March or Auggest release of DirectX,
but you can get some info. Go to start, click on run, and type in dxdiag
in the edit field, and click on ok. The dxdiag program will ask you if you
want to check your drivers etc. Answer no, and a window will appear
displaying various system info including your DirectX build number.

the check speakers option on all those titles, and every other game on my
system and the only other games with panning issues is Grizzly Gulch, and
Jim Kitchens Mach 1 game. What is strange is that the opening title
sounds and the menu sounds are fine but when I start the game I am only
getting the left channel. With Grizzly gulch I get stereo for every
sound in the game except when trying to shoot the gun the clicking sound
does not pan, and Yes I did install the patch from the babysoft web site
for grizzly and I get the same results. I think the problem is also
happening with Jim Kitchens Baseball but have not confirmed this. Again
the strange thing is that its not like the right channel is out it does
not pan for some reason. I installed an older version of direct exe and
this has not helped. I have a second X P system and these games pan fine
on that system but not on my main one. Lastly does any one know the
phrase to type in to find out which version of direct exe you are
running that would be great as well so I can see which version I am

as to what the heck is going on here. Thanks and Game On! Sly! ---

  Hi all,
Che Martin from Blind Adrenaline here.
As Ryan said, we've had a fully working version of blackjack out for a
little while now.
And to Michael's point about wanting something unique, we've done just
that with burnout blackjack at Blind Adrenaline.
This is a way to play against other human players in a tournament
situation, instead of just old boring play against the dealer all the time,
which can be done with any simple hand held blackjack game, and gets old
quick.
I encourage you to check out both sites games and decide for yourself
which you find more appealing. I could sit here and tell you about all the
features of our games, but nothing replaces trying it out for yourself.

[Audyssey] free games was pairacy

2009-11-10 Thread Eleanor
Dark said:

I would however be interested to know what
Draconis' or 7-128's overheads are, sinse both, rather than being one
man bands, are full companies with a larger staff.

I'll share with you the experience we have had on our latest game. As you are probably aware, we design all our games to have the accessibility accommodations that can still keep to the gameness of the game. However, we may not be able to complete a specific accommodation in the game due to cost, or time constraints.

In our latest game, Visit Salem, which is a travelogue and scavenger hunt of Salem MA, we designed it to be blind, VI, deaf and motion impaired accessible. This game has 180 locations, over 600 photographs, 6 hours of stories, interviews, historic information and voiceovers talking about interesting things. We worked on it non-stop with a fairly large team for six months. About half-way through it became apparent that we were not going to be able to complete the accessibility part because it would double the time and cost. Why it would double the time is that each of the photos have to have a description, all of the voiceovers and interviews would have to be transcribed for closed captioning, and the scavenger hunt items would need to be included in the descriptions so that the game would be playable. This would increase the time to completion by 4 - 6 months with a comparable increase in cost. We still want to do an accessible version, but need to cover our expenses and sell out the first bunch of CD's we had produced. So, despite the fact that the game was designed with accessibility in mind, it will have to wait until we recoup the money spent. And that is in the thousands as you would expect.

The kind of costs involved include things like licensing the music, having CD's
burned and envelopes printed, purchasing sound clips, buying display cases to
have the local merchants who sell our product display them. Then you have to
advertise and promote the game. Not to mention the cost associated with the
time spent by the developers.

Another issue in general is that despite the fact that many of our games are accessible, we don't know how many have been purchased because they are accessible. It is possible for us to estimate that the purchasers of our Perceptions GameBook are probably blind or VI. However, it is not possible to guess about any other purchases.

So - if you want to have the greatest impact on developers, what I suggest is that when you buy a game, you let the developer know that you are blind or VI and that you are buying the game because it is accessible. This would alert the developer that there is a market for accessible games.

This is especially important for games that are not specifically for blind and
VI gamers, but are from more main-stream game developers that are trying to
make their games playable by all. If the added work, time and money don't
result in added sales, eventually they will get discouraged and stop adding the
accessibility features they do add.

Alan, first off, look on Jim's site, there's a file called Delusalex.exe
which is a general sapi fix and helpful for sorting a number of problems.

I've occasionally run into a similar sapi issue which running that file has

If that doesn't work, have you looked in the speech settings section of the

Hi Dark,
I grabbed that file from Jim's site, but I couldn't run it for some weird
reason. It said something like it isn't a win32 application.
There was an error in the speech area in control panel. It said that a
engine couldn't be created? Something like that.
I don't know what the heck happened but my computer must have not

Do you have any suggestions where to go from here?
Thanks for helping me out on this by the way.

Re: [Audyssey] Future of accessible games

2009-11-10 Thread Charles Rivard
To me, the plot and the way a game is played is more important than how it
sounds, to a point. For example, and this is strictly a personal opinion, a
game can be one of the best games on the market as far as content, but has
lousy sounding music. It doesn't matter to me, because I usually play games
with no music because I like to concentrate more on the game. Then again,
if the sounds of the action or the results of my character manipulation are
not good, it would detract from my enjoyment of the game. If Mota's game
sounds were sounding as though they were being played through a tiny
transistor radio with low batteries or poor reception rather than how they
currently do, I would not like the game nearly as much as I do, even though
it is a great game as it is, and I know it will be even better when
distributed.

Hi Dark,
That's not the first time I've heard that before. I recently read an
article somewhere saying pretty much the same thing. It was a reviewer
for some major gaming magazine, and he pretty much said games created
today are not anywhere as good as they use to be years ago.
He also sited the point of over commercialization, too much emphasis on
killer graphics, special effects, great music and sounds, but no story
content and replay value whatever. The basic point of his article was
you really are not getting much of a game for your money any more, and
most games you can rent it once, play it, and return it without wishing
to play that game again. In his opinion most game companies don't really
care if the game is good or not as long as they can put something out
there, sell it quickly, and put something else out equally quickly.

dark wrote:
True Tom, though I've heard a lot of hard line gamers like my
brother and some of my friends complain that now, games are becoming
so large, cinematic and industry driven, they are losing significant
amounts of playability in the process.

This even goes for my friends who are fps players and fans of series
 like Dune or halflife.

One comment which recently made me laugh on a forum discussing
turrican compared Halo to Turrican with it's weapons exploration
elements (despite being in 3D), to which someone replied yes,
but when you finish Turrican you want to play it again. you play Halo
because of the Hype, then your glad it's over lol!

I'm not completely certain how true these views are, sinse the point
when main stream game developement and I seriously parted company at
the start of the 32 bit era, - games were stil a lot less
extremely industry driven than they are currently.

I do also have several friends (including my brother), who are World
of warcraft players, and while some of what they say about the
game concerning the publisher's payment initiatives is rather
horrific, - some other things I here about the frequency of
updates to the game with individual quests, instances as they're
known, and multiplayer tactical situations against large scale bosses
do sound like great gaming experiences.

 Beware the grue!

2009-11-10 Thread Mike Breedlove

Was watching a playthrough on youtube of someone playing through the old apple
ii version of oregon trail, and was wondering if there's an accessible version
somewhere? Would kinda like to play it.

Thanks

Re: [Audyssey] oregon trail

2009-11-10 Thread Jeremy Hartley

Hi.

I know that Louis Briant from BrailleSoft was going to port the old apple
version over to windows, but last I heard, he was busy with a lot of
personal and professional projects.

I did manage to google Oregon trail for DOS a while back and came on the
1990 DOS version. Yes, DOS programs can be run on Windows, at least most
Windows Operating systems, I know that Vista needed some real configuring to
make it happen, and I assume the same holds true for windows seven.

But, it may be worth you googling Oregon trail DOS version. I haven't tried
the DOS version yet, only passing on info.

[Audyssey] Blastbay Studios - upcoming sidescroller

2009-11-10 Thread Philip Bennefall
Hi folks,

Alongside the game creation toolkit, I've also been working on a sidescroller
called the Q9 action game. I intend to release this game in about a week, and
thought I'd post a little sneak preview for you to enjoy. The game contains
four worlds with three levels in each, a few bonus rounds as well as a grand
finale which is an intense boss battle. All the enemies are dynamic so there's
lots of replay value there, and you also have four difficulty levels to choose
from ranging from easy to insane.

This recording demonstrates a few levels from the game, from the simple to the
more advanced ones.

The link is:
http://www.blastbay.com/audio/q9_preview.mp3

Feedback and spontaneous thoughts are more than welcome.

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

2009-11-10 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Shaun,

No, it'll sell for 30 USD. However, until early January there will be a
Christmas special of 25 USD instead. These figures, by the way, are roughly
equivalent to 20 and 15 GBP.

Re: [Audyssey] Blastbay Studios - upcoming sidescroller

2009-11-10 Thread Ryan Strunk
Phil,

This looks like it's going to be pretty sweet. From the demo content, this
looks like it's going to be your best offering so far.

I really like how you have to jump to hit the bats in the cave. Are there
any other enemies that require you to do something special like that? Things
that perhaps hide in shells, shoot and force you to duck, etc.?

Looking forward to this one immensely.

Ryan

Re: [Audyssey] Blastbay Studios - upcoming sidescroller

2009-11-10 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Ryan,

Thank you, I'm glad you like the demo. At this time there are no other
enemies that have special properties like that, however they are different
in their characteristics and so require a fair amount of strategy;
especially when grouped together with others. The bears, for example, are
very strong and take a lot of damage per hit but are incredibly slow. This
means that your best bet is to fire at them from a distance if you can and
not get them too close to you, especially if the bear is not alone.

Then of course there is the boss, he's not particularly pretty either.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall
