[Audyssey] Barbie, was Adult Games

2012-01-07 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Raul,
A quick google search about Barbie came up with,
The Japanese mold sculptors were trying to be as realistic as possible;
however Jack Ryan objected to the nipples and filed them down before sending
the prototype back to the factory. Apparently he had to do this a few times
before they got the idea! Very few early made in the first year or so,
1959 - 1960 Barbies have vague nipples - they are not super-prominent, but
can be discerned when compared with other Barbies.

Jim, I can see it now.

Me: Hey daughter, can you bring all your barbies over here?

Daughter: Why dad?

Me: Because I need to feel them up and see if any have nipples.

Daughter: e!

Seriously though, I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me. I remember
one of the Barbie line coming out with pregnant Barbie and parents didn't
like that. Oh sure, it's ok for Barbie to look and dress like a scank, but
to show off the results of what might happen, no way. Sigh, I really
should stop, like you and others, I could go on and on about this and it's
fast getting out of actual game topics.

2012-01-07 Thread Keith S

The Japanese
- Original have a thing about pubic hair as well. in all Manga movies
and comic books, along with Playboys and adult magazines, they actually have
warehouses of people who scratch off the pubic hair. Just a Japanese thing.
Though i have seen a kid's cartoon from Japan who's main character, a
Raccoon, crushes his opponents with his testicles.

Seems a little Bass Ackwars to me, but what the heck.

Re: [Audyssey] Randomisation in Games was Huge Cave

2012-01-07 Thread Dennis Towne
Dark,

I still have it on my todo list (it's actually in the code in a big
comment block at the top of look.c so I don't forget about it.) We've
been putting most of our effort into improving the low level areas and
new player code for the past couple of months, so a lot of other
things are taking second stage right now.

On the plus side, it looks like that work is starting to pay off - we
found and fixed a bunch of choke points where players normally get
stuck, and added new material in places where there wasn't quite
enough. Both the graveyard crypts and the false temple have been
expanded, and we added two new level 10-11 areas on kordan.

I'm going to have to take a break on that for a week or so though, we
have our 17th anniversary event coming up next weekend. I'm currently
setting it up as a six part story with pieces coming out over friday,
saturday, and sunday. I'll post more on that in a day or two.

Hi dennis, that is absolutely true.

My only problem in alter is that with some of the descriptions, the game
goes a litle fast to read them, especially as far as attacking enemies go.

Just out of interest, did the preview command to get a ful description

 Dark,

We actually use a ton of tricks like this on the Alter Aeon server,
with everything from damage messages to bottled potions, brews,
soulstones, and unique items.  One of the coolest things about modern
games in my mind are the randomly generated things that are
occasionally really, really cool.  Pretty much everything on AA is
random number generator driven, and the random number generator is
used literally tens of thousands of times per second while we're
 running.

(For those of you interested, the AA server uses an 8 by 32 bit MWC
PRNG, which is really fast and high enough quality for pretty much any
 kind of game.  See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiply-with-carry/
 for details.)

[Audyssey] full playthrough of sc 3

2012-01-07 Thread Clement Chou
Okay... so here's a playthrough of Soul Calibur 3's story mode, called Tales of
Souls. I actually really like this mode, because of the branching paths and
various extra stages and battles available. Basically, you can play through the
default story, or you can choose branching paths which change opponents and
open up extra stages. There are stages where you need to fight off multiple
opponents, and some of them aren't actual characters from the game, like the
samurai in the first match. There are two endings, one good and one bad. I get
the bad ending in this one, died too many times. I turned the difficulty all
the way up... just to see how badly I would do. Not as bad as I feared... I did
manage to beat it. lol

That's just it though. I loved those games... but would the average vi
gamer who never tried it or had any mainstream game want to put in that
much work? I remember one of my friends hated mainstream games...
because
being totally blind, she couldn't see the point. So one day, when me and
a

couple other friends were messing around with them, I decided to make
her

try it... right then it was soul calibur, which was a good start since
there's only three attack buttons you have to worry about plus a guard
button. Obviously that's without going deeper... but for a newbie, that
was all it needed. So I asked her what style she liked to play, as in if
she was to fight what kind of character would she go for? She said
someone

speedy, fast, and was the dart in and then dart out again kinda
character.

So I picked Taki, taught her how to move and some basic combos, and
about
20 minutes into it she had us on the run. She's not hardcore into
gaming,

but she'll play something every now and then whenever we get together.
Point was, all it took was to learn the sounds and the commands, and the
rest was up to her. Being so good with tactics it didn't surprise me.
But

the point is... blind gamers should realize that it really isn't so
complicated. I think Yohandy is getting frustrated with this and I can
understand it. It's so frustrating to see. I don't know who goes on the
audio games forum, but this Bokura no Daibouken game is quite the spark
among audiogamers. It's a side scroller action rpg, and it's amazing...
but the catch is, it's in Japanese. And people are asking so many
questions, which is fine, until the same questions get repeated over and
over again. People haven't figured out how to choose their speech
engine,

despite having been given menu instructions many, many times over. And
there are the people who refuse to play because the menus aren't
translated. While that's fair to an extent, mainstream gamers import
games

all the time. Especially with the ps3 not being region-locked, many
gamers

buy games exclusively released in Japan and Asia, and don't have
translations in the game.. they have to surf the web for that. And while
the story may be hard to figure out, the game is still fun. For those
interested, check out the below two topics.
Here's the official game topic:
http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=6813
The developer is from Japan, and he's 14 or 15... so obviously English
isn't his first language.

And here's my walkthrough. Having some command of Japanese, I can
translate some of the story. I'm not fluent, but I know enough to get
the

basic gist across. I also translate menus, and give a bit more of an
example of what this game is like... this game is truly amazing for an
audio game. If there were graphics for this game, it would be an indi
title worth paying at least 20 bucks for.

Hi,

Right. The same applies to the WWE wrestling games for Play Station

remember like menus, remember what button performs what buttons you
need to pull off a certain wrestling move, but otherwise pretty
playable. If you have the commentary turned on in the WWE games you
get a good idea what happened or didn't happen in a lot of cases. For

That's just it though. I loved those games... but would the average vi
gamer who never tried it or had any mainstream game want to put in that
much work? I remember one of my friends hated mainstream games...
because
being totally blind, she couldn't see the point. So one day, when me
and a

couple other friends were messing around with them, I decided to make
her

try it... right then it was soul calibur, which was a good start since
there's only three attack buttons you have to worry about plus a guard
button. Obviously that's without going deeper... but for a newbie, that
was all it needed. So I asked her what style she liked to play, as in
if
she was to fight what kind of character would she go for? She said
someone

speedy, fast, and was the dart in and then dart out again kinda
character.

So I picked Taki, taught her how to move and some basic combos, and
about
20 minutes into it she had us on the run. She's not hardcore into
gaming,

but she'll play something every now and then whenever we get together.
Point was, all it took was to learn the sounds and the commands, and
the
rest was up to her.

And people are asking so many
questions, which is fine, until the same questions get repeated over
and

And
while

the story may be hard to figure out, the game is still fun. For those
interested, check out the below two topics.
Here's the official game topic:
http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=6813
The developer is from Japan, and he's 14 or 15... so obviously English
isn't his first language.

And here's my walkthrough. Having some command of Japanese, I can
translate some of the story. I'm not fluent, but I know enough to get
the

basic gist across. I also translate menus, and give a bit more of an
example of what this game is like... this game is truly amazing for an
audio game. If there were graphics for this game, it would be an indi
title worth paying at least 20 bucks for.

Hi Jim,

Yeah, it is hard when you are looking for realism, but I think I've
solved this staircase issue. I've looked through my archive and have
found some alternative stone step sounds. They aren't bad, and they
are different enough from the stone floor sounds that you'll instantly
know this is the top or bottom of a stone staircase rather than just
the floor. Which is really all that counts.

Cheers!

On 1/6/12, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote:
 Hi Thomas,

Maybe for the stairs, you could take the step sound that you have and use
Gold Wave, Sound Forge or whatever, and raise or lower the pitch a bit. or
add a bit of grit sound, or stretch it, or give it some flanger, or Doppler,
or see what it sounds like backwards.

But yeah, we have to get a bit creative to depict everything by sound. Like
in Triple J Shooter, body parts don't really make a sound when they jiggle
or bounce, but I tried to find sounds that would depict that. And in level
4 of Awesome Homer, trees generally don't make noise, so I put a bird in
each tree. And in Homer on a Harley, I used the voices of the Simpson's
family to mark the turns. It is probably harder and harder when you are
 going for total realism.

[Audyssey] Eamon delux news and thoughts

2012-01-07 Thread dark
Hi everyone.

Today I've been testing some of the beta versions for the new eamon delux with
it's vi compatibility mode.

it's going very well, all the irritations with display are totally gone so that
it just displays like any console window dos application, and the developer has
completely altered several menues so that now they all have numbers to press,
for instance in the character editer to alter your characters' hardiness you
now just hit one and then type the new number just like those number driven
choices in dos programs.

Also, the developer is doing a lot of very nice extra work in the vi mode, such
as writing in text descriptions of graphics, and with more of a campeigne mode
to be added where you can actually use that gold from adventures to buy
improvement for your character (rather than having to cheat with the editer),
this is looking like it'll be awsome.

Oh and yes, he's also making the dungeon designer accessible too in case anyone
would like to write their own eamon games.

So, today i've been playing all the beginner eamon delux adventures and having
thoughts.

As beginner adventures these are not complicated in the least, go into
location, slaughter your way through and grab the loot to take back to the main
hall to sell for dosh.

what is surprising me is how addictive these are, and how just a few lines of
description and a very simple system can create an immersive game.

The parza is fairly unsophisticated, indeed the only item manipulation commands
are put, remove, wear and use, so puzles tend to be a matter of looking in the
room description and searching objects for other objects.

the combat is equally simple, but at the same time has enough in for variation.
Five basic types of weapons with your character gaining experience in them as
they use them, a heal, damage, and speed spell with again limited chance of
use, and the chance to have your charisma affect your dealings with npcs,
meaning they either ignore, fight, or fight along side you.

Yet, the system has enough to be interesting, particularly when you've got got
three or four allies on your side vs three or four enemies, indeed in
those situations you might play healer.

Don't mistake me, the system is stil primative. I'm rather sorry for instance
there is no menue driven conversation, and some more spells or fighting moves
would be nice to have.

Also the descriptions obviously vary in quality according to the game, and
yet, i've spent considderable time today just running around dungeons hacking
up nasties for fun and prophit.

So, what Tom has said recently about text games really holds true I think, even
though I personally am not a fan of interactive fiction, too many item
manipulation commands and puzles that are too obscure.

Yet something like a more complex eamon, with some more commands, some more
character interaction and some random text would I think be awsome! indeed I
might think about creating something like this if I ever start writing games.

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Eamon delux news and thoughts

2012-01-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

This does sound good. Those games are quite addictive as simple as
they are, and I think it is the simplicity that makes them so
enjoyable.

As you pointed out with a lot of text adventures, especially
interactive fiction, its often a case of guess the verb or difficult
puzzle elements that turns people off playing it. However, text
adventures as you've seen don't have to be that way. If and when I do
my RPG I agree that keeping the commands simple stupid is the best
practice.

Its hard to go wrong with commands like put, take, use, wear, equip,
etc. if you stick to a few basic commands people can generally go from
there. I've even thought that adding a Dos style menu where you simply
press a number for the selection is even easier yet.

2012-01-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Raul,

Yeah, Jenny was pretty beleavable. She definitely was one of the more
realistic characters in the game. Although, I think the most realistic
was Stacey in terms of her willingness to have sex with Travis.

After all, the two use to date, were once romantically involved, and
remained good friends. I can see Stacey willing to give it one last
try to see if she can perhaps lore him away from Samantha and thus
that situation was very believable.

The grand winner for most unbelievable character in the game, at least
in my book, was Beth. Ok, maybe she might be willing to put out for
Travis after he rubs her back and so on, but the entire bit with the
jar and cream was a bit over the top. I didn't know to laugh or be
grosed out as she talked about using his cream for her personal
desserts. That was both totally disgusting and funny at the same time.
Lol!

Cheers!

Yes indeed. The eamon games were a long series of text rpgs produced in the
1980's for the apple Ii computer. Eamon delux is a program to run them under
windows.

Check the page on audiogames.net for details.

The current version of Eamon delux is a litle buggy and has some irritating
issues with display, which is why having a new version is so good.

Hi everyone.

Today I've been testing some of the beta versions for the new eamon delux
with it's vi compatibility mode.

it's going very well, all the irritations with display are totally gone so
that it just displays like any console window dos
application, and the developer has completely altered several menues so
that now they all have numbers to press, for instance
in the character editer to alter your characters' hardiness you now just
hit one and then type the new number just like those

number driven choices in dos programs.

Also, the developer is doing a lot of very nice extra work in the vi mode,
such as writing in text descriptions of graphics,
and with more of a campeigne mode to be added where you can actually use
that gold from adventures to buy improvement for
your character (rather than having to cheat with the editer), this is
looking like it'll be awsome.

Oh and yes, he's also making the dungeon designer accessible too in case
anyone would like to write their own eamon games.

So, today i've been playing all the beginner eamon delux adventures and
having thoughts.

As beginner adventures these are not complicated in the least, go into
location, slaughter your way through and grab the loot

to take back to the main hall to sell for dosh.

what is surprising me is how addictive these are, and how just a few lines
of description and a very simple system can create

an immersive game.

The parza is fairly unsophisticated, indeed the only item manipulation
commands are put, remove, wear and use, so puzles tend
to be a matter of looking in the room description and searching objects
for other objects.

the combat is equally simple, but at the same time has enough in for
variation. Five basic types of weapons with your
character gaining experience in them as they use them, a heal, damage, and
speed spell with again limited chance of use, and
the chance to have your charisma affect your dealings with npcs, meaning
they either ignore, fight, or fight along side you.

Yet, the system has enough to be interesting, particularly when you've got
got three or four allies on your side vs three or

four enemies, indeed in those situations you might play healer.

Don't mistake me, the system is stil primative. I'm rather sorry for
instance there is no menue driven conversation, and some

more spells or fighting moves would be nice to have.

Also the descriptions obviously vary in quality according to the
game, and yet, i've spent considderable time today just

running around dungeons hacking up nasties for fun and prophit.

So, what Tom has said recently about text games really holds true I think,
even though I personally am not a fan of
interactive fiction, too many item manipulation commands and puzles
that are too obscure.

Yet something like a more complex eamon, with some more commands, some
more character interaction and some random text would
I think be awsome! indeed I might think about creating something like this
if I ever start writing games.

Re: [Audyssey] Eamon delux news and thoughts

2012-01-07 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I'm actually much more a fan of limited commands in these cases. As I've
said before, interactive fiction was something I played a great deal of at
one point, but don't tend to anymore sinse for every really good game I
found I found four or five more that just got frustrating, either because
the puzzles were utterly illogical, or required some very weerd verbs.

For instance, suppose you find a gun and a silencer, what is the command.

put silencer on gun?, use silencer with gun?, silence gun?, Screw
silencer onto gun? Screw silencer onto barrel

there are so many different ways of saying the same thing, yet if you get
the wrong one, the game just won't react. However simply having a use x with
x parza, there's no question with what you need to do.

Also, the fewer verbs there are in the parza, the more obscure the puzles
can be sinse more limited your choice of actions, the more likely you are to
hit upon the right one.

For example, the game Broken sword which was one of those point and click
graphic adventures like Monkey island, so had limted verbs, had one puzzle
where you had to climb a haystack.

one item you had at the time was a large sewer key a couple of feet long. in
an if game you could've spent ages mucking about with commands, but in
Broken sword simply using the key with the haystack let you push it into the
hay half way up and use it as a step to climb.

This is just what I mean.

then, having combat in a game gives you a way to interact with your
environment and have some fun as well.

Beware the grue!
