[Audyssey] Private banking in Alteraeon?

2012-08-03 Thread dark
Hi.

I was just wondering how the private banking in alteraeon worked. can you
literally just use banking commands from anywhere without having to go to a
bank? and how much does it cost?

Appologies for asking, but I noticed it in the changelog but can't find details
of it with the help command or in the faq on donations.

if indeed you can! just stock pile any gold into the bank from anywhere, then
pick it up from anywhere, I can certainly see this as a usefull addition,
indeed yesterday I had to wander betwene Gad's landing and a couple of
locations having to buy quest items because I got there, found I didn't have
the cash, went bakc to pick it up, then had to go and pick it up again later.

Just as another question, I take it the credit buy corpse retreaval is one time
only, and doesn't let you just recall your corpse anyway at any time, if
it did I'd certainly want to learn resurrection, but if it's one time only
possibly not.

Beware the Grue!

Re: [Audyssey] browser/muds was RE: Private banking in Alteraeon?

2012-08-03 Thread dark

Hi Darren.

I take it by persistant you mean one that doesn't reset every so often the
way warring factions, tribal wars, Aterion or unification wars do?

Others I've heard of have been capy regnum, travian, cyber nations, Devana
or ikarian, but I'm not sure if those persist or not.

Personally, those sorts of games just don't interest me because I just don't
find the pvp interactions with other humans interesting. I've seen so many
games that say battle other players and create an empire and it just is an
instant turn off, yet I absolutely loved castaways.

I suppo0se it's because even in a stratogy game I find reactive stratogy to
achieve objectives as caused by a computer that can simulate unforseen
circumstances such as desasters and weather, rather than none reactive pure
building stratogy against other human players, which is pretty much what
most of those games are based on.

unification wars was the only one of that type that struck my interest, and
that because it had single player like missions and researches, but after I
finished the newbie tutorial I just got attacked so many times it was
ridiculous, to the point in fact that I'd lost all my resources within the
first day when all I was doing was trying to complete single player missions
and not attacking anyone.

Imho I'd love to see a fully expanded version of castaways similar to dwarf
forgress where you could go from a small group of survivers to building a
full and mighty empire, just! reacting to the natural challenges of the
environment or specific targits, rather than having to constantly fight off
other human players.

In fact, mostly I don't find fighting other humans half as interesting as
engaging in an ongoing story or setting implicit in the game itself.

Hi dark,

I know what you mean.

By fighting I mean in terms of as you say for specific reasons not just
because a player thinks oh ok I'll take a bit of that.

Obviously I love the likes of ce it's awesome you can't beet it for the type
of game that it is. but even then it's not what you would call a management
game in the sense of having to manage an economy etc. although having said
that I've been playing the same account for close to 3 years now. you can't
get more persistent than that me thinks.

But yes, if there is a game out there that has a lot of building/trading
economy etc, I'd love to know.

achieve objectives as caused by a computer that can simulate unforseen
circumstances such as desasters and weather, rather than none reactive pure
building stratogy against other human players, which is pretty much what
most of those games are based on.

unification wars was the only one of that type that struck my interest, and
that because it had single player like missions and researches, but after I
finished the newbie tutorial I just got attacked so many times it was
ridiculous, to the point in fact that I'd lost all my resources within the
first day when all I was doing was trying to complete single player missions

and not attacking anyone.

Beware the grue!

 Hi.

I was just wondering how the private banking in alteraeon worked. can you
literally just use banking commands from anywhere without having to go to
 a
bank? and how much does it cost?

Appologies for asking, but I noticed it in the changelog but can't find
details of it with the help command or in the faq on donations.

if indeed you can! just stock pile any gold into the bank from anywhere,
then pick it up from anywhere, I can certainly see this as a usefull
addition, indeed yesterday I had to wander betwene Gad's landing and a
couple of locations having to buy quest items because I got there, found I
didn't have the cash, went bakc to pick it up, then had to go and pick it

Just as another question, I take it the credit buy corpse retreaval is one

if it did I'd certainly want to learn resurrection, but if it's one
 time only possibly not.

Dark,

Thanks for the heads up. I've added information about it to the help
pages and faqs and made sure everything is consistent and up to date.
As John mentioned, its 1000 credits per year, and you can use the bank
from anywhere on the game at any time.

The corpse retrieval is one at a time and happens the instant you buy
it, assuming that your corpse is still out there. The underlying
mechanic is that it transports your corpse to you and does a god-level
resurrect, so you get back the maximum exp that a resurrect is allowed
to return. I've also been thinking about adding a sort of one time
pre-death insurance like prayer for the dying, but I don't know how
well received that would be.

Darren,

Can you give me a bit more of an idea of what exactly it is you're
looking for here? Are you just looking for something where you can
build and trade things? What do you mean by 'manage an economy'? What
parts of CE do you like the best, and what parts don't work very well?

We've got crafting and a handful of other things on our soon to do

GW-BASIC was a dialect of the programming language BASIC developed by

was bundled with MS-DOS operating systems on IBM PC compatibles by

simple games, business programs and the like. Since it was included with

Re: [Audyssey] Private banking in Alteraeon?

2012-08-03 Thread Dennis Towne
Ben,

The easiest way is just to use real money, but I totally understand
that isn't an option sometimes. To help out, I set up a money market
in the game to let players buy and sell credits anonymously to each
other using gold, so you can use gold you get to buy credits. The
price of a credit is pretty high though - it takes a lot of gold to
buy a credit most of the time. I'd plan on a price of around a
thousand gold per credit.

Another option is to trade equipment or other things that players want
for gold or credits. There's a couple of people on the game that have
literally got all their credits simply by trading valuable stuff to
others. I've found that it's often easier for me to get gold by
trading than it is to try to run it myself.

To take a look at the money market, use the 'mmarket' command in game,
or try 'help money market'.

Re: [Audyssey] browser/muds was RE: Private banking in Alteraeon?

2012-08-03 Thread dark

Hi Darren.

I agree on Ce. There are some specifically economic games out there, like
the business game perfect competition and the mud federation 2, but whether
they would serve I'm not sure.

To be honst the thing I'd love to see in a management or empire building
game isn't the building or trading, it's reactive gameplay.

Literally every one of those types of games I've seen has been primarily
based on distributing resources correctly, and understanding how to maximize
resources over time. This to me isn't half as interesting as the sort of
model games like castaways and other single player games like Sim city or
even civilization work on, where you have limited resources but changing
requirements and environment over time so that you need to play reactively,
rather than just strictly and robotically to a plan.

I have a friend who's a huge fan of the freeware roguelike stratogy building
game dwarf fortress, and I never really understood how such a game could be
so fascinating until I played castaways with it's indirect control of in
game units and it's need for heavily adaptive gameplay.

Much as I enjoy ce, this is again something which is missing there too,
sinse most often in Ce it's a case of making a goal and working towards it,
rather than adapting to circumstances and surprises with limited
resources, one reason why i've been so in favour of making combat in
the game more interesting.

Re: [Audyssey] Private banking in Alteraeon?

2012-08-03 Thread dark

Hi Denis.

Thanks for letting me know.

the main problem I tned to have with the hole resurrect business, is that
odds are if I died, it's deep in some very hostile zone, and resurrecting my
corpse will be fairly likely to get me killed again even assuming I can find
it.

This is why I've not learnt the resurrect spell myself.

I'd actually love a way to just summon my corpse back, even at a hefty
manner cost, then I could use resurrect.

As to selling death related bennifits generally I'm not sure on that one.
personally, I prefer not to spend real world money on items in games which
get consumed without a perminant, or at least very long term bennifit, so
while I am willing to buy practices to perminantly iprove my character and
will very likely buy private banking, I'm not sure about paying for one time
death related bennifits for myself.

I'm not however saying it's a bad idea though, this is just personal
thoughts.

more generally, I personally love doing quests above everything else, and
will even go back to lower level areas to complete them. I'd therefore love
there to be a way to actually have some vague objectives assigned to random
monster hunts for xp, say by having random hunting missions assigned in
certain areas to kill a set number of random mobs for gold and possibly xp.

Don't ask me why, but I just find it far more engaging to have a distinct
goal in mind when i'm in an area I've already explored hunting for xp, than
just running around doing hack n slash.

indeed, some alternative methods to gaining xp and gold than fighting could
be very nice. I love the explorer points system, and also often fish, and
will start brewing just for the heck of it as soon as I have the
skills, though unfortunately that could take a while being as thief and
mage are my bottom two classes.

Re: [Audyssey] browser/muds was RE: Private banking in Alteraeon?

2012-08-03 Thread Darren Harris
Hi Dennis,

Basically I'm a big fan of games whereby you literally start out with
nothing and with nothing you slowly and surely build an empire. My idea of
empire building if you're talking ground side, build a group of houses into
a village, town, city etc with the ability to trade and sustain itself. So
it can produce enough for it's citicens and trade. But you can take it
further. Once you have gotten 1 location off the ground, you can then start
on another location, build that up so it can produce other resources. Some
which your first location would use so you set them trading with each other
which keeps a stable economy whilst also entertaining trades outside both
locations with other cities/leaders etc. that's the sort of thing I'm
looking for.

Darren,

Can you give me a bit more of an idea of what exactly it is you're
looking for here? Are you just looking for something where you can
build and trade things? What do you mean by 'manage an economy'? What
parts of CE do you like the best, and what parts don't work very well?

We've got crafting and a handful of other things on our soon to do
list, and it would be good to have more information about what people
are actually looking for.

Obviously I love the likes of ce it's awesome you can't beet it for the
type
of game that it is. but even then it's not what you would call a
management
game in the sense of having to manage an economy etc. although having said
that I've been playing the same account for close to 3 years now. you
can't
get more persistent than that me thinks.

But yes, if there is a game out there that has a lot of building/trading
economy etc, I'd love to know.

Re: [Audyssey] gwbasic

2012-08-03 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Jacob,

I started out with Microsoft extended basic on a Texas Instruments 99 4A and on
an Atari 800 xl. And then BasicA on an IBM PC Jr. I sure did like GWBasic as
it would create programs automatically dos screen reader friendly. That was
not the case with QBasic, Quick Basic 4.5 or PDS7. But it was easy enough to
get them to do so.

BTW PDS7 is Microsoft Professional Development System version 7, also known as
Extended Quick Basic.

Jim

I like Visual Basic 6.0 because I can not C.

[Audyssey] Auto Rap

2012-08-03 Thread Lori Duncan
Hi everyone, a friend of mine told me about this ap for the Iphone, it's called
Auto Rap, it's not a game, but if you talk into it normally it'll turn your
conversation into a rap style with a beat. I used it for a music session today
and it was lots of fun to work with, try reading something totally boring into
it, like how to assemble a wardrobe, or who invented Microsoft Sam, and it'll
come out sounding really funny and cool. A note for Phil here, if possible,
try and see if you can't get the Peeves voice for the Sarah game recorded on
there, because it's synthetic already, it'd be funny to hear the result.
Enjoy, it's free by the way and has kept me amused for hours. from Lori.

2012-08-03 Thread shaun everiss

Hi jeremy.
Yeah I remember that to.
I'd like to really go back to that point in time.
However I don't have an external synth.
At any rate, I would really like a 386 with 100mb hdd maybe 250, a
floppy drive or cd drive and a synth again.
Sadly though I could play stuff like eamon even with vertual it can't
emulate the entire dos spirit.

You for example didn't have to review the screen hardly.
Now I am always reminded about how vertual I am.
nvda is ok for most things but if I have to switch another program or
use a review curser it detracts from the experience.

 From following wikipedia page:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwbasic

GW-BASIC was a dialect of the programming language BASIC
developed by Microsoft from BASICA, originally for Compaq.
It is compatible with Microsoft/IBM BASICA, but was disk
based and did not need the ROM BASIC. It was bundled with
MS-DOS operating systems on IBM PC compatibles by Microsoft.
Microsoft also sold a BASIC compiler, BASCOM, compatible
with GW-BASIC, for programs needing more speed. The language
was suitable for simple games, business programs and the
like. Since it was included with most versions of MS-DOS, it
was also a low cost way for many would-be programmers to
learn the fundamentals of computer programming.[1][2] With
the release of MS-DOS 5.0, GW-BASIC's place was eventually
taken by QBasic, the interpreter part of the separately
 available QuickBASIC compiler.

 Stay well

Hi Lori,
Your right, it is a blast. I would almost consider it a game since it is fun
trying to get the best, and funniest rap out of the thing.
Can you tell me how you change the beat? I am not quite sure how that works.
