Re: [Audyssey] Aetolia

2014-08-14 Thread dark

Hi Shanon.

the screen reader option is good, but I'm not sure about inforced rp.

There is a chap I spoke to on audiogame.snet who had been playing achaea,
got to level 20 but then literally couldn't advance without joining a
guild and to joing one he had to take an exam!

And by exam, I mean a full written paper which seemed to be taking rp a
little too far. I did wonder, what with the description for Etolia
emphasising the exploring if the rp requirement was achaea specific, but
obviously not.

Aetolia is pretty heavy into RP. You have to join a guild, and each guild
has requirements you must meet in order to advance. A certain amount of RP
is necessary.

There is an option you can set in the beginning that modifies the way text
is read for people who use screen readers.

Due to the guilds, it's not the best game for solo exploration. Your ability
to hunt, for example, varies depending upon which guild you joined. So,
vampires bite, necromancers decay, etc.

Re: [Audyssey] force feedback was: Re: game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Obviously weather to use or not use force feedback is purely a matter
of personal preference. However, I will say if a gamer isn't use to it
force feedback may feel a little strange at first. Its a different
form of feedback where you, the gamer, are employing vibration as
another sensation to gather feedback about your game or add a bit of
extra realism. Imagine, for example, firing a machine gun. The
controller might vibrate in sink with the gun simulating the feeling
of a machine gun, or your steering wheel might become hard to steer
when you drive into the marbles. Both are just added for extra
realism, but might be irritating to someone not use to the controller
attempting to simulate things so realistically. Fortunately, there is
a button on most controllers to turn it off if they don't want force
feedback in their games, and it is considered to be purely optional by
most game developers.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Yes, I'm aware of all that. The thing is the initialization code only
needs to be done once for the controller. It doesn't matter how many
sticks, buttons, and other controls are on it as all of that will be
detected by your initialization of the device. Once it is initialized
all you have to do is use the correct code to acquire information
about the state of the left stick, right stick, POV hat, buttons, etc
while it is in use. In other words you don't have to have two separate
initializations just because there are two sticks on the controller.
You only need one initialization that allows you to gather input from
any button or stick on the device.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] the grue was: Re: saitek pro flight system?

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, now that you mention it I do remember the comment in It where
after Bill, Ben, Ritchie, etc encounter It for the first time there
was a comment to the effect once they had seen It as it truly was,
with all its masks thrown aside, it was not so terrible. I only
vaguely remember the comment in question, but I do recall something to
that effect. In any case it is true that no matter how horrible
something may seem in the dark its not quite as bad when you can see
it and describe it.

As for the origins of the Grue interesting stuff. I'm pretty sure
Infocom borrowed the idea or the name at least from Jack Vance as
well. A lot of authors and game developers did just because he was
such a prolific fantasy writer. That said, everyone has taken the
concept and made it their own such as Dungeons and Dragons, Infocom,
Mutants and Masterminds, and while they share a name in common to me
they aren't the same thing at all.

Sure, I like the concept of the Grue as being mysterious and hiding
out in the dark. In that case they can be anything a person wants them
to be as it is based totally in the mind of the gamer. At the same
time I make a distinction between the Grue from the Zork universe and
these other so-called Grues because they are often different concepts
of what a Grue is and is not.

For instance, in Mutants and Masterminds you mentioned the Grue is a
race of aliens from the moon or something like that. In the context of
Mutants and Masterminds I'd accept that as belonging to that universe.
However, since the Zork universe has a totally different concept of
the Grue I would totally reject the notion of a Grue being from the
moon in a Zork game because they are mysterious and unknown monsters,
or at least were until Infocom decided to bring them out into the
light and describe them which was a disappointment. They were more fun
as an unknown rather than a known monster.

Cheers!

As regards grue, well interestingly enough i believe Infocom got the name
from some books by Jack vance. This wouldn't surprise me sinse Vance's
books have been the source for a lot of ideas in modern rp and other games,

for example the DD magic system where by wizards need to first memorize a
spell to absorb it's energy each morning, then speak the encantation to
release the energy when they want the spell is apparently from Vance's dying

 earth series.

Interestingly enough however, the term grue actually occurs in a problem
of philosophy of science from the mid 60's, (my friend had a good laugh when

we had a lecture on the Grue problem).

Broardly speaking the problem is to do with observable properties that
resemble another property at one point in time, but are entirely different
at another and comes from putting the words green and blue together,
sinse a grue object would appear green at one point, and blue at another,

so it would be impossible to know at any given time whether the object was
actually green or blue, or was grue.

The point to all this is that the word grue and it's association with
things that change and are a bit mysterious at least for me, goes slightly
 further than the Zork universe.

I personally like the idea of Grues being completely unseen and unknown
creatures that only appear in darkness, but that is just a preference,
similar to Tolkien's preference for dipicting elves as noble, wise and
artistic rather than capricious and fairy like as they occur in some
 legends.

so, as far as I'm concerned, conceptually the grue is up for grabs! :D.

Of course, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge fan of the Zork
games (which is probably odd for someone who likes grues so much), so it's
likely my respect for their universe boundaries is slightly less than
someone who is a major fan.

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Cheers!

Hi all.
Park Boss is the next audio game from N A Soft where you build and run

It's currently being tested and I'm hoping to release in the next couple

Re: [Audyssey] the grue was: Re: saitek pro flight system?

2014-08-14 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I admit I'm not keen on the grue in mutants either. They're held to be a
race of aliens who live on the moon and are the principle reason that earth
hasn't got intersteller contact with other alien races as they are pretty
much at war with most everyone off earth. They are mysterious in that
they're shape shifters and so can either disguise themselves or become
animals or monsters and battle, but they just don't fit the idea of grue
to me either.

Personally, if I ever wrote a serious book or other story that featured a
grue, one of the most key points is that it would never be seen or
understood.

Btw, I actually should sit down and read more books by Jack Vance just
becuase I'd be interested to see where DD etc got their ideas from.
Unfortunately, I've only red one book by him, his sf story Araminta station,
and in usual fashion the Rnib over here only did the first book of the
trilogy (which also ends on a cliff hanger), though the ideas in that book
were still rather interesting, for example a rather isolated race of
humanity who become close to a sub species due to alien conditions, or a
aristocracy based on people's genetic closeness to an original colony
team, and on the basis that the team only has a number of positions which
must be filled by members of the correct family and anyone surplus to
requirements or failing tests will be exiled from the planet.
Anyway, this discussion has drifted a little off topic for a gaming list so
probably ought to stop.

Beware the grue!

Aetolia is pretty heavy into RP. You have to join a guild, and each guild has
requirements you must meet in order to advance. A certain amount of RP is
 necessary.

There is an option you can set in the beginning that modifies the way text is
read for people who use screen readers.

Hi Charles,

I was definitely planning on including force feedback support for USA
Raceway. That actually has been one of the reasons that particular
project was held up as I was waiting for SDL 2.0 to come out with
force feedback support so I could include it in Mac and Linux releases
of Raceway. Now that SDL 2 is out and has force feedback support its
more a matter of finding time to upgrade my engine to SDL 2.0 from SDL
1.2.

As far as other games goes I can think of a number of ways it could be
included in games besides Raceway. In Mysteries of the Ancients the
game controller can vibrate when Angela is firing the Uzi or MP5. It
could simulate hitting something when the sword or dagger strikes an
object. Same goes with fists and feet in hand-to-hand combat. Strictly
speaking that kind of feedback isn't necessary but would be there for
added realism.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

POV stands for point of view. In mainstream games it is often possible
to change the point of view or the perspective of where the game
character is looking by using the POV hat on the controller to look
around at the game world without moving the character.

Typically the POV hat is a round shaped control on the gamepad located
at the top left corner of the unit. You press it up or down to look
up/down or press it left or right to look left/right. There is usually
a button nearby to have it toggle between point of view and movement
controls for the game character so you can use it as a type of
alternative joystick as well as looking around.

Since audio games don't usually have look commands I doubt many will
employ this control much, but it is useful in mainstream games and
could easily be adapted to audio. In fact, I am planning on doing just
that once I get around to launching my full 3d audio games.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Paladin of the sky

2014-08-14 Thread Ron Schamerhorn

Hi all

I knoww this has been talked about for awhile and finally got around
to it. I'm having trouble getting past the second half (wimpy I know)
of the first combat challenge, the one where you attempt to hit the alt
key. What's the secret? I've given it qquite alot of effort and can't
pass it.

TIA

Hi Jesse,

As far as I can tell Paladin of the Sky does not have any joystick or
gamepad support. Only keyboard support. Although, in a game like this
joystick support would be sort of overkill anyway.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game controller question

2014-08-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

I see. Unfortunately, I'm not finding a copy of my review, but the
controller isn't that complicated. The controller actually has a
fairly typical gamepad layout. Although, that probably doesn't help
seeing as you are a newbie to game controllers.

In any case I'll see what I can come up with. No promises, but at
worse I'll try and recreate the review. Problem is I don't have
sighted assistance around so I don't quite remember which buttons are
labeled A, B, C, D, etc. In any case that usually doesn't matter
because in games such as my own I have a profiler to map whatever
action I want to the button and no longer recall what it is labeled.
That's hardly a good thing for a technical review. Still I suppose I
can find someone to remind me of what buttons are labeled what.
Though, it might take a few days.

Cheers!

Cheers!

[Audyssey] Question About Some Games from Ticon Blue

2014-08-14 Thread Kelly Sapergia

Hi,

I bought Chapter 1 of the Inquisitor a few weeks ago for Windows, and am
really enjoying it. I plan on getting chapter 2 of the series as well, but
I've also been considering getting maybe another title. I'm wondering if
anyone has tried Audiospeed, Inquisitor's Heartbeat, or She-Noire, and if
yes, what do you think of them?

Thanks.
