Let's be honest, though. Rehab is probably going to be getting JAWS for

 Hi all.
The content of this thread is making me a little uncomfortable.
You may not agree with what has happened but encouraging piracy and personal
attacks makes no one look good and especially from people normally respected
 in our community.
As there is nothing you can do about the Q9 situation why not try to see the
positives. People who wouldn't normally play audio games are being
introduced to them and that may lead to them finding out what else is out

Hi Dark,

I believe your Windows analogy is pretty close a comparison as we can
get. Not exactly the same situation, but close enough for comparison
that the concepts carry over.

As you said Leasy costs no more than it ever has and I believe Brian
has purchased Q9 to include in Leasey as a sort of freebie the way the
Windows games are for Windows users. Although, I believe a standard
Windows DVD costs like $125 nobody can accuse Microsoft of essentially
charging $125 for Solitaire, Hearts, Minesweeper, and their other
games simply because they are considered by Microsoft as add-ons or
freebies included with the Windows package as a whole. From their
perspective you are not so much buying those games as you are buying
an operating system complete with multiple programs such as media
players, text editors, games, web browsers, etc. To accuse them of
selling games for $125 wouldn't make sense from their point of view.

Leasey seems to be a similar situation. Brian sees, rightly or
wrongly, Q9 as being another nifty add-on to Leasey. He does not see
it as selling a game since he is selling a bunch of scripts as well as
a package or suite of programs to the end user. You buy one you get
all, and thus he sees it as a package deal even though the majority of
gamers just want the game itself.

The only thing I can think of that is sort of similar to this
situation is Internet Explorer. Long ago, we are talking the early
1990's, Internet Explorer use to be a stand alone program. A person
went out and purchased a computer with say MS Dos 6.2 and Windows 3.1
on it, and had to buy Internet Explorer separate if they wanted it.
When Windows 95 came out Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer as part
of the Windows 95 release, and stopped selling Internet Explorer to
Windows 3.1 customers. Unfair some might say, but from Microsoft's
point of view they were giving it away for free now that it was
bundled in their latest operating system rather than sold separately.
Some 20 years later nobody cares because it has for the most part all
been forgotten about, and I suspect there are many on this very list
that have never used anything prior to Windows 95 so don't know or
remember the days when Internet Explorer was not a freebie.

I said all that to make the point that Brian is undoubtedly viewing Q9
as some freebie, an add-on, to his Leasey package and does not
consider the money he is losing by not selling it separately. I
suspect that he purchased it with the soul aim of boosting sales of
Leasey, of having exclusive content, that can only be gotten by
getting Leasey. While that is rotten, unfair, sucks, I can remember
similar cases where companies like Microsoft have done the same sort
of thing but people have forgotten about it. Leasey customers are
unlikely to know or care that Q9 was once sold separately and over
time the people who know and remember that will slowly fade. Even if
they don't they have no control over the situation so at this point I
consider the matter a mute point since nobody here can make a
difference.

Cheers!

 Hi Josh.
I've heard this arguement that the game is now worth 200 usd before, but
that is just looking at it from one perspective.
From Brian Hartgen's point of view he has bought Q9 to essentially be a

It's like the solitare and other games that comes with windows. It would
 be

foolish to say that microsoft are selling a solitare game for $300 (or
however much a windows install costs these days), it's that microsoft are
selling windows as the main operating system and solitare, pinball, spades

That is how I believe Brian Hartgen is viewing Q9. he sells Leasy for 200
usd which is the same price he's always sold it for, and people get a fun
little game as a look at this freebee! item.

The problem though is Q9 is not like solitare. it's not just a fun little
time waster, it is a well crafted game that has had significant work put
into it, which is exactly why I accuse Brian of devaluing what he has

extremely sorry that Philip didn't sell the rights to the game to another,
more responsable person who recognized the worth of what they had rather

Hello Ari,

Correct. Leasey is completely closed source and NVDA is licence under
the GPL which requires most things to be open source and to really do
what Leasey does it would have to be open source. Therefore since
Leasey is a commercial project the GPL type license wouldn't allow
them to support NVDA the same way they support Jaws without also
essentially giving it away for free. At least is how I take the
situation.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-10 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

My one major issue with this is as I said that Philip's work that he
obviously put much time and trouble into is being so devalued, and is being
so badly curtailed for no reason.

Brian Hartgen could! still sell the game for 20 usd as Philip did as a
stand alone program and! give it away free with leasy if he desired, indeed
it could be a great promo for him.

Buy Leasy and you get this free game worth 20 usd!

As I said though, he is just being a bloody minded arse hole with no
respect for what he has purchiced.
No, he is not the first business owner to do this, nor will he be the last,
indeed this is a classic example of what Marx called the Alienation of
labour ie, someone who makes or develops or produces something being
utterly debased from the value of that thing, and it is also typical of the
business world that the customers and potential customers have no power in
this dynamic whatsoever, anymore than Philip did the second he signed over
that contract.

You are correct that unfortunately that is that, but I don't think people's
bad feelings towards Brian Hartgen are unjustified, and personally i feel
extremely sorry for Philip to think that his game in the future will have
such profoundly limited availability, sinse I doubt very much anyone will!
buy leasy just for the purposes of playing Q9, and though people might buy
leasy and spend some minutes with the game, I'd be willing to bet that this
won't be half as many as would do so if it were just sold without
restriction.

Okay, end of contributions from me on this matter.

Beware the grue!

As soon as I tried to read the message my mail client went ballistic; fully
loading up my processor and sending memory usage through the roof (fellow
nerds that's 400mb). I'm not sure if this was just the world's largest game
log file, or if it was something more sinister, but I'd advise anybody who
got the message to avoid opening it.

I'm hoping that this really was just a bad decision to send an ungodly large
log through email and not some kind of virus on list, but given the way my
machine reacted I figured it'd probably be best to post an alert about it
just in case (if you do open the message, killing my mail client seems to
 have fixed the issue).
I'd also note that I'm not trying to accuse anybody here - rather to offer a
note of caution and a request that we try not to post logs t're larger than a
 bunch of novels put together.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-10 Thread Gmail
From what I heard, the developers of Leaseyo did actually approach the
developers of NVDA about supporting it; things fell through, though, because
NVDA requires that all their code be open source, which makes sense, and it
seemed like the developers of Leasey either weren't willing or weren't able to
do that.

will be forthcoming I guess I won't be getting a response direct from
the horses mouth. NO matter really, it's clear at this point that
however politely written they might be (and to be fair, most of them
weren't), individual protestations aren't going to change anything.

For what it's worth, I already own Q9. Have done since release day or
pretty close to it. I've got massive respect for Philip's development
chops and his taste in SFX. It's a big shame that the community wasn't
large enough to provide enough of an income to make it worth him
retaining the rights to his creation. I've had to pass along rights to
music I've sweated over before to make ends meet, and can sympathise
that it's not always an easy decision. However, my disappointment
stems from the business model of where the rights now reside. Philip
would've been aware of said model, and from a couple of brief
conversations over the years I had him pegged up as a pretty forward
thinking chap, hence his decision of who to sell to surprised me.
That's why I attempted to open a dialogue somewhere a little less
 fraught.

In my mind, for a community as small as this one, games being tied to
specific screen readers is a terrible idea, which makes games being
tied to a paid product which is in turn tied to a paid screen reader a
*truly* terrible idea! Tbh, I'd question who Leasy's users even are,
given that funding for JAWS licenses isn't dished out willy-nilly
anymore. I mean, do you know many people with enough spare change to
invest in a JAWS license which costs more than an entry level
computer, then splash a bit more cash to change the user interface of
that expensive product they've just bought? I don't! Perhaps Bryan is
shooting for exclusive content such as Q9 making his platform more
appealing, but I would've thought it would've been clear from a bit of
research that a large - if not majority - portion of the younger
generation in this community (his potential long-term customers) are
going to turn their nose up at anyone who's willingly hopped into bed
 with Freedom Scientific.

Of course, this is all just one chap's opinion. The decision was
Philip's to make, and he made it. I guess at this point I'm mostly
sounding off because if Leasy have any sort of buying power, this
might not be the only game to be acquired rather than developed
specifically for a platform which frankly, I would hope is short
lived. That's a strong statement, but it carries no animosity on a
personal level to anyone involved. I'm saying that it's the business
model that sucks for end users, not necessarily the people behind it.

Lastly, for anyone who made it this far and has me pegged as another
holier than thou armchair critic, I should probably point out that
I've been instrumental in finding funding for a couple of
accessibility products, so I feel pretty confident in stating that
Leasy's model isn't the only way. Funding is still out there for good
ideas. That funding can greatly reduce the cost for end users, and if
Leasy were screen reader agnostic, it could've been a product that
attracted more young, hungry gamers. But nope.

Anyway, just a splurge of my initial thoughts on the subject. Maybe
they'll reach a future developer who gets approached and give him or
 her something to chew on...

That is extremely good to know and I'm very glad of that fact.
As I said on audiogames.net, With the amount of people grabbing up jim's

people not just being able to play jim's games but reading the descriptions
of them that he wrote before they download them.

Just one question. It is possible that people will create more golf courses,
trivia question files or monopoly board configurations in the future, (off

could also be added to Jim's site, though if not they could of course be

Subject: [Audyssey] game archive project?

 Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen where
somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or game y is
gone, does anybody have a copy.

As a result, I'm wondering how the community would feel about a game archive
project. Basically, my idea is that those of us who have large collections
of games would work to create a central repository, and then send out
 installers on request.

My current vision for this project is something like the following:

*The archive will keep a copy of any and all games that can be found, as well
as versions of the same game that offer a noticeable difference in gameplay,
sounds, storyline, etc. Example: swamp version 3.6 would be kept, 3.5 would
not, 1.1 would (because it has a single player mission different gameplay and
 different sounds).

*Only legal games will be distributed. Example: the setup for bsc games, but
not the key generator. Requesting an illegal product could result in a
blacklist of the person (or email if name cannot be determined).

*Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis; I'm considering either
using dropbox file requests or just plane old email. The reason for this is
mostly related to web site management - I could probably build a page for
each author, but keeping it updated would be a pain, and it'd require huge
amounts of storage space (my personal archive of installers is 8gb, and its
 really not that comprehensive).

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games. A lot
of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if you do
enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still hosted, which
makes finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location where we
can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions of games
that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

How do you all feel about this (developers, I'd love to hear from you
especially), and if I were to try to make this a reality, who'd be willing to
dedicate some time to help me put together the archive?

 Subject: [Audyssey] game archive project?

  Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen
where somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or
game y is gone, does anybody have a copy.

As a result, I'm wondering how the community would feel about a game
archive project. Basically, my idea is that those of us who have large
collections of games would work to create a central repository, and then
  send out installers on request.

My current vision for this project is something like the following:

*The archive will keep a copy of any and all games that can be found, as
well as versions of the same game that offer a noticeable difference in
gameplay, sounds, storyline, etc. Example: swamp version 3.6 would be
kept, 3.5 would not, 1.1 would (because it has a single player mission
  different gameplay and different sounds).

*Only legal games will be distributed. Example: the setup for bsc games,
but not the key generator. Requesting an illegal product could result in a
blacklist of the person (or email if name cannot be determined).

*Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis; I'm considering either
using dropbox file requests or just plane old email. The reason for this
is mostly related to web site management - I could probably build a page
for each author, but keeping it updated would be a pain, and it'd require
huge amounts of storage space (my personal archive of installers is 8gb,
and its really not that comprehensive).

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games. A
lot of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if
you do enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still

 Hello Rajmund,

Yes, I still play a number of text based games. Although, admittedly
it has been a few weeks since I played any recently. However, there
are people here including myself that still play the old Inform based
zcode games you speak of. I also occasionally play mud's like Alter
Aeon and some browser based games like Sryth.

 Cheers!

If you haven't played in a while I'd recommend just starting afresh. If you
have questions about a specific area I can help you out, but the
walkthrough's probably better if you want an overview or complete answer.

Hello John,
I'm actually playing with a braillenote. I'm actually using the default

help? I lost track, haven't played in ages. Or, I could try and find where

Can you give me a little more info - I don't remember a cabinet room
specifically. What puzzle are you stuck on? What have you done so far?
If you'd like a walkthrough that works let me know, and I'll send you the
one that came with my brailleNote.

 Hello,
Well, so, I was following the tutorial at:
 http://www.ifarchive.org/if-archive/solutions/CursesR16.sol
There are a few more, but this was the one that took me the furthest.
 There
seem to be bugs, though, I solved most, but one. I'm not exactly sure
 where
it is, but I'm stuck. I just loaded my saved game, I'm in a cabinet room.
And from here onwards, the walkthrough doesn't seem to be correct. Or is
there a better one out there, that I'm not aware of?

Requesting an illegal product could result in
  a
blacklist of the person (or email if name cannot be determined).

*Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis; I'm considering
  either
using dropbox file requests or just plane old email. The reason for this
is mostly related to web site management - I could probably build a page
for each author, but keeping it updated would be a pain, and it'd
  require
huge amounts of storage space (my personal archive of installers is 8gb,
and its really not that comprehensive).

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games. A
lot of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if
you do enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still
hosted, which makes finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location
  where
we can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions
  of
games that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

How do you all feel about this (developers, I'd love to hear from you
especially), and if I were to try to make this a reality, who'd be
  willing
to dedicate some time to help me put together the archive?

I don't know as I don't use windows ce but I use ie 8 and it works fine for
me. A lot of the stuff you click on aren't links as such it just looks like
lines of text. Like inventory for example. But if you can click on that and
bring up the inventory then it should work for you.

A note taker doesn't run under the same principles as a web browser - I'd be
doubtful of it working unless I'm misjudging the device.

I don't know as I don't use windows ce but I use ie 8 and it works fine for
me. A lot of the stuff you click on aren't links as such it just looks like
lines of text. Like inventory for example. But if you can click on that and
bring up the inventory then it should work for you.

I would suppose submissions could be sent to the webmaster, Joshua

people not just being able to play jim's games but reading the descriptions

of them that he wrote before they download them.

Just one question. It is possible that people will create more golf courses,

trivia question files or monopoly board configurations in the future, (off
and on I've been working on a Doctor Who trivia set). It'd be nice if these

could also be added to Jim's site, though if not they could of course be
 hosted elsewhere.

I've noticed a spike in the download usage on the Kitchensinc.net website,
so just to clarify this for those downloading his games with the expectation
that they will no longer be available to download.

I will not be removing Jims site from my hosting package. His site will

[Audyssey] game archive project?

2015-08-10 Thread john
Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen where
somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or game y is
gone, does anybody have a copy.

As a result, I'm wondering how the community would feel about a game archive
project. Basically, my idea is that those of us who have large collections of
games would work to create a central repository, and then send out installers
on request.

*Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis; I'm considering either using
dropbox file requests or just plane old email. The reason for this is mostly
related to web site management - I could probably build a page for each author,
but keeping it updated would be a pain, and it'd require huge amounts of
storage space (my personal archive of installers is 8gb, and its really not
that comprehensive).

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games. A lot of
people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if you do enough
digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still hosted, which makes
finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

 Hello Thomas,
Well, a game that, not by even contacting the author helped, is
uninvited.z5. Mind you, I'm stuck on curses.z5, too. I only play legend of
the green dragon, and The Dark Grimoire, as them 2 seem to be more
accessible with IE6. Since I have found web games, poor text adventures
collect dust, but that is because I didn't have anywhere to come for help.
But yeah, uninvited and curses have got me. If anyone wants either of the

If anyone wants either of the
files, I can throw a dropbox link.

   Hello Rajmund,

Yes, I still play a number of text based games. Although, admittedly
it has been a few weeks since I played any recently. However, there
are people here including myself that still play the old Inform based
zcode games you speak of. I also occasionally play mud's like Alter

Re: [Audyssey] game archive project?

2015-08-10 Thread john
The problem with organizing games based on the file name is that said name
is almost always cryptic. If I'm going to try to organize the games in a way
that makes sense, I'm going to have to rename pretty much every single one
of them.
Honestly, making a proper archive of IF titles is probably going to be
incredibly difficult, and the more I think about it the more I start to
wonder if its beyond the scope of what I'm trying to do.

   Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen
where somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or
game y is gone, does anybody have a copy.

As a result, I'm wondering how the community would feel about a game
archive project. Basically, my idea is that those of us who have
   large
collections of games would work to create a central repository, and
   then
   send out installers on request.

My current vision for this project is something like the following:

*The archive will keep a copy of any and all games that can be found,
   as
well as versions of the same game that offer a noticeable difference
   in
gameplay, sounds, storyline, etc. Example: swamp version 3.6 would be
kept, 3.5 would not, 1.1 would (because it has a single player mission
   different gameplay and different sounds).

*Only legal games will be distributed. Example: the setup for bsc
   games,
but not the key generator. Requesting an illegal product could result
   in
   a
blacklist of the person (or email if name cannot be determined).

*Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis; I'm considering
   either
using dropbox file requests or just plane old email. The reason for
   this
is mostly related to web site management - I could probably build a
   page
for each author, but keeping it updated would be a pain, and it'd
   require
huge amounts of storage space (my personal archive of installers is
   8gb,
and its really not that comprehensive).

I've got a few reasons for wanting to work on this.

Firstly, is the fact that there's no real central location for games.
   A
lot of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found
   if
you do enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still
hosted, which makes finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

The way I see it the more people who can share the files the better.
While I also intend to mirror his site and games I would like to
perhaps repackage them and give them better Windows installers. While
the method he uses is functional it doesn't really cut it for today's
computing environment now that 64 bit Windows uses the Program Files
(x86) folder rather than the older Program Files folder and that just
confuses people to no end. So a new installer that would pick the
correct one would be an improvement, and I would like to repackage the
games to have a more updated installer. So perhaps we can work on
something like that besides just mirroring them as is.

Also I heard you live three hours away from Chardon, and if you can it
would be nice to have another VB 6 dev take control of his source.
While I could probably do it I am pretty busy and have a lot on my
plate and wouldn't be up to taking on that many games any time soon.
Plus while I know VB 6 it has never been my forte anyway.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] game archive project?

2015-08-10 Thread john
My concern with providing official access to the keygen is that I don't know
who has legal access to it.
I suppose from a technical standpoint its only piracy if you actually use
the generator - but I'm not sure that's a line I particularly want to walk,
especially if I'm trying to make this archive something the whole community
knows about. It'd be different if I was considering offering it to a single
person, but if I'm going to say email me and I'll send you whatever you
want then I want to be a lot more careful.
I want the archive to be a place people can go to get games - but I also
don't want to get sued.
My stance on this is a bit more paranoid than some - I've seen a number of
different links for bsc floating around - but especially if I'm acting in an
official capacity as archive manager as opposed to myself I'd rather be
caucious.

Hi John,
I would certainly like to see something like that, and I would certainly be
willing to contribute what I have.
One thing I would say though, is that since the BSC software is abandoned,
and the key generator was once sold, couldn't we get access to that
alongside the other stuff? I say we either give full availability to the
product where such availability has been granted, or don't host any kind of
paid material at all if it can no longer be purchased. I say this because I
know how I would feel, both emotionally as a potential customer and
conscientiously as a developer, having a game which I know has more
functionality than the demo allows and not being able to play it. I can
understand it from both points of view.
Cheers.
Damien.

Anything more complicated - or anything with text that changes on the page

With the exception of swamp and the rs playroom, they are text, and with the
exception of those listed as muds, they are browser games.

Also note you can go to www.audiogames.net and use the search games link.
You can search for a category such as mmorpgs, and specify text and not
audio, though some of the games listed on whitestick haven't been added to
the audiogames.net database yet hence why I suggested you tried whitestick
first.

If you go to www.whitestick.co.uk you can find a list of games to play

several on that list in addition tto the ones you have tried, warriors 2,

Re: [Audyssey] game archive project?

2015-08-10 Thread Damien Sykes-Pendleton

Hi John,
I would certainly like to see something like that, and I would certainly be
willing to contribute what I have.

Cheers.

Subject: [Audyssey] game archive project?

Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen where
somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or game y is
gone, does anybody have a copy.

Example: swamp version 3.6 would be kept,
3.5 would not, 1.1 would (because it has a single player mission different
gameplay and different sounds).

A lot
of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if you do
enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still hosted,
which makes finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location where
we can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions of
games that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

How do you all feel about this (developers, I'd love to hear from you
especially), and if I were to try to make this a reality, who'd be willing
to dedicate some time to help me put together the archive?

Re: [Audyssey] Seeking Drakor Info

2015-08-10 Thread dark

Hi Maria.
Drakor is an rpg game with a very heavy emphasis on building and crafting
items, and a rather unique combat system.

You can wander around and there are several quests to do, each area is
described and combat is interesting, it works a bit like a card game.
A lot of processes in the game take time and drakor generally plays far
slower than something like Sryth, for example you gather resources on a tick
based basis so you click mine and will mine something new every minute or
so, even travelling to a new location takes six seconds per move.

It's perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but it's very well designed and
worth a look, though bare in mind there are very few links and standard
controls and you'll need to do lots of clicking on hotspots, although they
are all labled in text.

Most (not all) games have proper titles. Although, I can see where you're

PS. As for my message, I'll start fresh, and I'll let you know how I do.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location
where
we can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions
of
games that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

Yes, that is what I was thining.
There are several of those sorts of things kicking around, though ie6 on a
 note taker might be interesting.

If you go to www.whitestick.co.uk you can find a list of games to play
online that includes various accessible games. I would personally
 recommend
several on that list in addition tto the ones you have tried, warriors 2,
kingdom of loathing and metroplexities for example.

Puppet nightamres is extremely good but very complex to play, the same
 with
the recently discovered drakor, indeed those might be problematic on a
 note
 taker.

Astro galaxy is also good thoug I know you need a screen reader and
 browser
for that one sinse it has lots of labeled images and controls.

 All the best,

 Dark.

[Audyssey] audiogames archive

2015-08-10 Thread john
I'd like to start figuring out who can help me in compiling the games archive.
If you're interested in supplying files, please contact me off list with the
following:
*a brief overview of what you have; something like:
Total 7.8gb, mostly well-known and recent developers. Windows only, limited to
no interactive fiction or dos-based games.
*Info on your file transfer capabilities, something like:
I have 1gb of available upload space, and can leave files up for a max of two
weeks.
*How you'd prefer to work, something like:
I'd rather just zip up a bunch of installers and let you process them, as
opposed to sending specific files.
*How well you know where your games came from/who made what, something like:
I know everything produced in the last five years, but nothing before that.
*Whether you'd be willing to help me in organizing the archive, in addition to
supplying installers.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-10 Thread Thomas Ward

From Brian Hartgen's point of view he has bought Q9 to essentially be a
 bonus.
It's like the solitare and other games that comes with windows. It would be

foolish to say that microsoft are selling a solitare game for $300 (or
however much a windows install costs these days), it's that microsoft are
selling windows as the main operating system and solitare, pinball, spades
etc come as a freee extra.

That is how I believe Brian Hartgen is viewing Q9. he sells Leasy for 200
usd which is the same price he's always sold it for, and people get a fun
little game as a look at this freebee! item.

The problem though is Q9 is not like solitare. it's not just a fun little
time waster, it is a well crafted game that has had significant work put
into it, which is exactly why I accuse Brian of devaluing what he has
bought, indeed while I hold Philip generally blaimeless in the matter, I am

extremely sorry that Philip didn't sell the rights to the game to another,
more responsable person who recognized the worth of what they had rather
than thinking oh game, worth not much, I'll throw it in for free

I'm also dissappointed that this moron Brian, even though he clearly did not

know the value of what he had didn't change his thinking once he recieved so

many complaints. Whether he is hoping people will buy leasy just for the
game, or whether (as I personally believe is more likely), he is sticking to

his guns just to be bloody minded after recieving lots of cryticism becuase

he assumes he knows best I can't say. Either way it clearly shows me that
he's not just ignorant of games but ignorant of good business if once he
gets something which people planely want to buy, he refuses to sell it
 individually.

Hi Shaun,

That's a bit obvious. No one is complaining about Q9 but the way the

distribute the game now that he has it.

The point in my message you responded to is that if people don't like
the new distribution policy that the game could be cloned, a new
version developed, without the Leasey and Jaws restrictions. Obviously
the clone would not be the same as the original due to copyrights
but something very similar could be developed if that were something
someone wanted to do. I'm not sure I like the game quite that much to
rewrite it myself though.

A lot of the elements in Q9 are pretty generic. We have a forest
level, cave level, mountain level, and so forth. The enemies are
gorillas, bats, rhinos, leopards, and wolves. Weapons are mainly a
club and a slingshot. Point being that stuff is so common and generic
that it is not copyrightable. The only things that are copyrightable
is the sounds, music, and the little alien Q9 himself. If we created a
game using a caveman doing the same things the game play could be
identical to Q9 and not be considered copyright infringement. Make
sense?

I think the issue tom was more how it was sold and who got it.
In this case a restricted platform which is what is getting people in a
hustle about is the big thing.
I don't think people care that its sold but to someone that needs jaws
and well has a package which is quite expensive and way over the
origional game price is the problem and that it happened in a sudden
fashion.
I think I have covered all bases.
oh the archive for kitchensinc is now up and ready to rock.

 Hi list,
I just received an email from Josh Kennedy (not Josh k - this may be
important), with a listed size of about 1100 kb, and subject something to
do with jim's nfl football (I deleted the message, and don't have the
 exact line anymore).
 As soon as I tried to read the message my mail client went ballistic;
fully loading up my processor and sending memory usage through the roof
(fellow nerds that's 400mb). I'm not sure if this was just the world's
largest game log file, or if it was something more sinister, but I'd
advise anybody who got the message to avoid opening it.

I'm hoping that this really was just a bad decision to send an ungodly
large log through email and not some kind of virus on list, but given the
way my machine reacted I figured it'd probably be best to post an alert
about it just in case (if you do open the message, killing my mail client
seems to have fixed the issue).
I'd also note that I'm not trying to accuse anybody here - rather to offer
a note of caution and a request that we try not to post logs t're larger
than a bunch of novels put together.

different links for bsc floating around - but especially if I'm acting in an

official capacity as archive manager as opposed to myself I'd rather be
 caucious.

 Hi John,
I would certainly like to see something like that, and I would certainly be
willing to contribute what I have.
 Cheers.

 Subject: [Audyssey] game archive project?

 Hi list,

Recently I've been thinking about all the messages and posts I've seen
 where
somebody's asking a question like where can I find game x, or game y is
gone, does anybody have a copy.

Example: swamp version 3.6 would be kept,
3.5 would not, 1.1 would (because it has a single player mission different
 gameplay and different sounds).

*Only legal games will be distributed. Example: the setup for bsc games,
 but
not the key generator.

A lot
of people have installers, and pretty much any game can be found if you do
enough digging on audiogames.net, but not all of them are still hosted,
which makes finding games (like rail racer) a pain.

Secondly, is that I'd personally love to see a really solid location where
we can browse and access old abandonware titles or just older versions of
games that aren't on the dev's web site anymore.

How do you all feel about this (developers, I'd love to hear from you
especially), and if I were to try to make this a reality, who'd be willing
to dedicate some time to help me put together the archive?

confuses people to no end. So a new installer that would pick the
correct one would be an improvement, and I would like to repackage the

something like that besides just mirroring them as is.

Also I heard you live three hours away from Chardon, and if you can it

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-10 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I know Tj was philip's first game and that later he stopped using javascript
and maybe architecturally the system could've been programmed better, but
the game did a lot right, indeed I bought it in 2006 when it was a
commercial game and wasn't sorry.

Each side scrolling level was a little different, whether attacking monkies
on vines or fighting torgons, including their leader. While I wasn't as
taken with the sterrio targeting bits like tiger fight and the torgon battle
with the gun, the acting and music made them work. The only two portions I
thought were particularly off were the guess the numbers bonus game and
honey hunt where you basically just hit one button, though I did rather like
the honey hunt boss.
I also liked the fact that the difficulties other than easy really! got
hard, and usually that difficulty wasn't just about speed so much as it was
about slightly changing challenges, so a remake of tj, definitely a good
plan.

The only thing I will say is that if a new game were a remake of tj
specifically, it wouldn't be tj if it didn't use the same sounds and music,
and cut scenes. Kelly, Liam and Philip all did an amazing job.

If the remake were more a sequel, then it'd still be nice to have some of
the same elements, indeed maybe even if Philip wouldn't remake the game he
might reprise some of his acting, same goes for Kelly though I imagine Liam
is probably a bit busy these days with other matters.

Either way, good idea, because Tj was actually a pretty awesome game for
what it was.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-10 Thread dark

Hi Josh.
I've heard this arguement that the game is now worth 200 usd before, but
that is just looking at it from one perspective.
From Brian Hartgen's point of view he has bought Q9 to essentially be a

As I said, I personally believe at this stage he's just being bloody
mindedd, or possibly missunderstanding how many none jaws using, none leasy
using potential customers there would be for the game if he sold it, hell he
could always still! give it out free with leasy if he desired and! sell it
individually.

Either way, I'm sorry Phillip sold his game to such an ignorant berk!

Beware the grue!

side-scroller of Tarzan Junior. A lot of the elements that made Q9 as
good as it was could be carried over to the new side-scroller and
Brian Fartgen would have nothing to say about it.

 Cheers!

 Hi Tom.

Well yes Q9 has the fairly standard environments, weapons and
 gameplay, but

as I said it's the design here that matters. This is actually why I'd
be interested if one of our more established and experienced
 developers worked

on some sort of side scroller sinse funnily enough while a few have
been developed I've not seen any quite as well put together as Q9 for
 quite some

 time.

Adventure at C: for example has a lot of good points, the rpg stats
system and mod creation of new levels not the leased, not to mention
challenges etc, but there are still portions that turn into a button
masher.

About Psycho strike I don't know, though various other attempts like
Battlezone or scrolling battles have been rather rough around the
edges I think mostly because people assume that creating enemies
everywhere and having the player hammer the buttons is what makes a
good game rather than messing with the enemy properties.

Adventure to fate Project Alpha is extremely atmospheric and has some
interesting challenges, but is fundamentally a very different game
from something like Q9, closer to a side scroller adventure title,
and while combat is very very quick in the birsts it occurs, it's the
story and obstacles that make the difference.

Angel gift is nothing short of amazing! from it's sound design to
it's intelligent enemies, but it's fundamentally a short game, and
given the massive and epic amount of sound work I'm not really surprised.

So, oddly enough generic as Q9 is, it's been a hell of a long time
sinse someone made something like it, much less something very very
well designed, indeed the only game we've had that I can really
 compare it to is

Superliam, and of course a game that has maze elements with going up
and down on ladders etc the way Deathmatch project alpha currently
 does and the

way the various montizuma games did is still in short supply side
scroller

 wise.

 All the best,

 Dark.

Hi Josh,

Well, please don't do it again. That caused a lot of grief for some
list members and I had strongly considered blocking that message
because it was extremely huge. However, being nice I let it through

Re: [Audyssey] Q9 Has a New Home

2015-08-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,

I don't think anyone will disagree with that. It is bad marketing, but
I don't think we need to continue to belabor the point. What is done
is done and continuing to moan and groan about it isn't going to
change things. So if there is nothing more constructive to say on the
issue I think we should close this topic down as we are simply
repeating ourselves over and over.

Cheers!!

[Audyssey] Sad news regarding Jim Kitchen.

2015-08-10 Thread Gary Price(Gmail)

Hello everyone.

Not contributed for a while I know. Its Gary Price from Bolton here.

Aw what a shame regarding Jim Kitchen. I didn't know him personally, but
got in touch by E-mail with suggestions for his games.
To be honest I'm glad someone is doing a mega installer, because I
didn't even know he had released new ones!

Will definitely grab this when its available.
I've got all his old ones like Battleship, golf, WinSpank and Winpup3
plus a few others.
Used to play the Golf game on a website called TAFN (The accessible
friends network).

Anyway just my thoughts.

Re: [Audyssey] drugs in psycho strike

2015-08-10 Thread Aaron Baker
You can use drugs the same way as any other item in Psycho Strike,
like the Medkits.
Go to the Casino to collect Fortimine, Burlium, and Bridine.
Either focus the item with the tab and shift ab keys and press enter,
or if you want to do it from the base, select manage items use items.
Select the character with the drugs, arrow to the drugs and press
enter.
Hope that helps!
Regards,
Aaron
