Re: [Audyssey] what will it take for this community to learn?

2013-06-23 Thread MamaPeach
You visit any other website or business like Ebay, Amazon.com, Walmart.com,
etc, , purchase a product, then you expect delivery of said product within a
reasonable amount of time, say 7 to 14 days? Would you wait 6 months before
inquiring where your product is? I don't know anyone that would be willing
to spend their money on something and then wait for an unspecified amount of
time to receive their purchased item and not get upset over not getting what
was paid for. I don't see that it should be any different for developer's of
games. People buy their products expecting to receive what they order, and
when it never arrives, they aren't supposed to worry about where it is or
why they haven't received it, and although they have written asking about
why they haven't gotten it, they receive no response for the person they
bought the item from? This just doesn't make sense to me and it isn't good
business practice, in my opinion. It makes me worry that if I choose to
purchase a game, that the developer's do not care whether we ever get what
we pay for. Six months? I know I would not appreciate waiting six months for
something I spent money on. Patience is one thing, but come on, no one
should have to wait that long when it is their money they are spending.

A thought on impatience: Some people gripe about the length of time taken
by developers to come out with a new game. Some people gripe if they
don't get a registration key right away. Some people gripe about the fact
that they don't have enough games to play. Strangely enough, these 3
complaints come from pretty much the same few people. These are also the
same people who want cheat codes very shortly after they get a new game.

Have you noticed what always seems to happen when these complainers really
get on a roll?

James North produced many very good games and then quit. Why did this
occur?? Liam has voiced frustration, to say the least, and has openly
voiced a consideration of quitting. Why? Other producers of games have
also vacated the premises. Guess why?

I commend those developers who have stuck it out and continue working for
those of us who do care about and respect them. For those of us who
don't, and who only care about themselves and what they want, when they
want it and no later, what's it going to take for you to learn what you
cause? It's about time you grow! up! and think about someone other than
you for a change.

Yes, I'm angry, and I think I have a darned good reason to be. Although I
don't create games, I care about those who do, and it just flat burns me
up when you drive these creators away with your selfish and downright
childish behavior!

Hi Chris,

I have never played the slide puzzle from L-Works. So I'm not familiar with
the layout of the slide puzzle, meaning I don't know if an actual picture,
numbers or letters are used.

With Sluzzuls the letters that voiceover reads back to you are supposed to
be grouped together, another words all of the A's, B's etc. The game board
is layed out as follows; Think of a large 9x9 square, which is sectioned off
into 9 3x3 squares.

I like this slide puzzle, because it is a bit more challenging and difficult
in comparison to the traditional slide puzzles. The fact that letters are
used makes getting confused a bit challenging in itself.

For those with sight, the small tiles have different colors. The colors have
to be grouped by same to complete the puzzle. In my opinion, this sounds a
lot easier.

But I love a good challenge and find this slide puzzle a lot of fun!

HTH

Donna

Good afternoon all.
Just bought this gameSluzzuls in the Uk app store.
Now are you sure it's the right one? Asking as all I see on the screen is
a, a, a, b, b, b, c, c, c, etc etc.

Doesn't seem as obvious as L-Works' Slide game.
Any responses will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Chris.

Hi Shaun,

Weather or not the Microsoft games are good or not is really in the
eyes of the beholder so to speak. I have played them and they are
pretty much what you would expect from card games. Weather a person
likes them or not really depends on if they are into card games or
not.

There are of course better ones out there for the mainstream users
that have more decks of cards, can play for virtual money, have
networked player verses player play etc but the games that come with
Windows are usually good enough for a starter set of PC games. Just
calling them crap shows you have a very narrow perspective on things.

Cheers!

that came with the game for those exact reasons. A lot of time and work was
spent and done to provide you with the answers to the most commonly asked
questions and to help you learn the game. Use it.

Answer: As I don't know how you played, I have no idea why you didn't
score. If you were a beta tester of a game, and you sent this in as part
of a report of problems, there would be no way that this would help solve
the problem. Is there a problem with the way you are playing?, or is
there a bug in the scoring section of the game.

This is confusing, but your answer can be found in the help system of the
game. Review it and then use what it showed you. You need to arrow
across and find a stack with the top coin that matches the coin in your
hand. If you drop your coin onto a stack that has 3 coins that match the
one in your hand as the top, second, and third coins, they will all
explode. The same is true if you drop a coin onto a stack with a coin
that matches yours, and there are 2 stacks next to that stack whit coins
that match yours. The only time all of the coins in a stack, wherever
they are, that match your coin will explode is if a bomb is on that stack
and you drop your coin there.

3. how can i quickly review a stack?

Here again, go through the help system for the answer to such questions.
This one is found in the section of key references. To modify a well
known phrase, U T F M! Use the freakin' manual! That's why it was
created.

I found a new iPhone game today. Actually, it's been on the app store
since
2011, but it 's news to me. The game is called Swing Tennis, by Head
First
Communications. Where Lolrific tennis and Blindfold tennis fall short,
this

picks up the slack. I hav en't figured it all out yet, which is why I
haven't posted to Applevis, but...
First, you can play over Game Center. No more being limited to a WiFi
connection for a good game of audio tennis.
Second, there are three difficulty levels, and easy is actually a bit
difficult.
Third, though it's strictly timing based like other audio tennis apps
for

the iPhone, its rules are stricter--a lot stricter, so you have to have
split-second timing.
Fourth, both you and your opponent have power-ups you can use. Don't
get
comfortable, because as soon as you think you've got the rhythm down,
in
comes a fast ball. I haven't exactly figured out how to use the
power-ups

and various swings yet.
Fifth, each level has nine computer opponents on single player, each
with

different skills and strategies.
Sixth, the game allows you to chat with your opponent. Kind of
interesting,

though you have to pause the game to do it.
The game play itself is simple. Just swing your iPhone like a
tennis racket.
The weird thing is that you have to be touching your screen to do
this, with
Voiceover off. Even the lightest movement might be construed as a
swing, so
be careful! I suspect that since it's an audio game for the sighted,
not
tailored for the blind, there may be special places to touch if you
want
certain swings, power-ups and so on. I don't think this will be too
hard to
learn however. Yes, sighted people are learning about audio games at
last.

Now if we can just convince them to make them accessible...
Speaking of accessibility, the tutorial isn't accessible at all, and
the
game starts with a bunch of unlabeled buttons. All of these, save one,
are
dimmed, and the undimmed one is the one to click each time. It takes
about

three minutes of clicking around to get through the tutorial, but once
you're past that everything's accessible except whatever might be on
the

screen during actual game play. I'll try to get help with that aspect
tonight and post about what I find.
The game also has an extra game to unlock, called ball bounce, but
this,

sadly, is inaccessible. However, the game is definitely worth the
$.99 price
tag.

Hi Nicol,

Well, it is definitely an interesting concept. It should be pretty
easy to create in any language or toolkit, and yes can be done quite
easily in BGT.

My only concern with this type of game is synonymous words that have
the same meaning or definition. There are a number of words in the
English language that mean the same thing and could become confusing
in this sort of game.

For example, elevation and altitude are synonymous. The question would
have to be worded very careful in order to allow the player to know
which word the game was looking for. A generic definition such as
“above sea level” wouldn't be enough to know which word was expected
in this case.

Cheers!

The game gives you a definition and you must type the word for which the

The correct word is cosmetics.
Another example:
The game gives the following definition:
Elevation especially above sea level or above the earth's surface
The correct word is altitude.
Another example:
The game gives this definition:
Difficult to accomplish; demanding considerable mental effort and skill
The correct word for this definition is arduous.
The game gives you a list of difficulty levels to choose from.
On easy you can guess about 5 times the word for which the definition is
but on hard difficulty you only get one guess. ON easy difficulty the game
gives you definitions for very familiar words, but on hard difficulty the
game gives you definitions for less familiar words.
What do you all think about this idea?
Is it possible to develop such a game with bgt?

The reason I'm asking I'd like to mess with them in my free time, see

Hi,

The game you're thinking of is called Poker Squares. It's a challenging
game, and I do like it. It's fun to play.

Hope this helps.

Where can I find games like Word Play and Word Scramble? Poker Squares? Suit
Yourself? I spent $48 for the 8 pack which included the Suit Yourself game,
so the package was 9 games, which when you break that down per game, it
isn't badly priced at all, but it would be really nice if he offered some
kind of customer service or support of some kind. Or an upgrade to those who
did purchase the games so they would work properly on Windows 7, 64 bit

Hi,

I understand at the time Robert created them there were no others like
it, but these days all of those games are available from other
developers, are better supported, and are free too. So I definitely
wouldn't recommend anyone consider buying them given the fact they
aren't updated and are way over priced.

As far as I can tell, almost every single game works on win
seven, though you may or may not need some dependancies. I can't
think of anything that won't run if you've got the visual basic
libraries installed. There may be one out there, and a couple of
the games probably load faster or run differently on their
prefered operating systems, but if you get the dependancies you
need and possibly set compatibility mode, you should be just
fine.

they should in fact run, but you will probably have to play around
with compatibility settings and so on.
also, any program that is a 32 bit program should run under 64 bit
windows 7, if you give it the right settings, and as said before,
download and install things like vb6 runtime libraries and all that.

and yes, if your processor isn't 64 bit, you won't be able to install
windows 7 64 bit to it at all. it will not let you.

however, in saying that, all mainstream CPUs for about the last 4 to 6
years have been 64 bit.
and this is a good time to change over to 64 bit, as from all the info
we have, the next version of windows, that is now under development,
will be 64 bit only. not 32 bit in any form.
so a lot of programmers are going to have to start coding programs in
64 bit, and stop this 32 bit stuff. and of course, 64 bit programs
can't run on a 32 bit machine. so the sooner you can get on to 64 bit,
the better, as it offers the most widest range of programs, including
games!

Hi,

What's the error you get? It sounds to me like a missing dependency of
some sort. Most compatibility errors are solvable by figuring out why
you are getting the error in the first place.

His new site is down too? I know the old domain, gamesfortheblind.com,
has been gone for a long time. Well, those games may have been
overpriced for what they were, but they were some of the first

You don't need voice over to play, however if you decide to get this game

To play hold the iPhone in front of you and move in the direction that
you hear the zombie coming at you.
If you hear the zombie behind you then turn around and attack before the

As you progress through the game it will get hard.

Hi Jim,

Well, I don't own a database of questions either, but I'm pretty sure I
could create one pretty easily. Thanks to my college education I often
times can hold my own when listening to Jeopardy, and my extensive
studying of history, geography, science, art, and music could probably
be used to create the beginnings of a decent database. Plus I suppose I
could always purchase the board game from the store, and use it as a
starter database as well.

The only problem I have with Trivia and quiz games is that since the
developer has to know the answer to every question asked there is no way
he or she can lose unless there is some kind of custom database created
by other gamers. That's where your Trivia engine comes in handy because
if I create a Trivia file I will know the correct answers, but if
someone else created the file I won't necessarily know all the answers.
So I would say that having some way to add custom databases or quiz
files would be necessary here.

Hi Thomas,

You make a very good point about spelling the answers in a Jeopardy game.
And the multiple choice doesn't seem to be a real good solution either.
My other problem with making a Jeopardy game is that I do not own a data
base of questions and answers. That is what has been nice about people
creating and sharing trivia files for my trivia game engine.

starter database as well.

Well you know when you get the key in the general store, go ahead and go
back to your office and unlock the cell then you won't have to worry about
it then.
What I normally do is get the key then return to the office unlock the

Hi paulette.

the inspector cindy games are mystery gamebook style games set in the
1890's, from 7-128.com, and are indeed fun, though they play with sapi, they
have lots of music and sounds as well plus video clips of inspector cindy
herself.

Feel free to check them out, though sadly i don't think 7-128 have the demo
versions to try out anymore, which is a little bit sad.

Beware the grue!

Hi Micahel.

You can get the games
http://www.7128.com/getgames.html#inspectorCyndiGames
there did used to e mach versions, and indeed demos of the games, but
while

I know 7-128 were revamping their demo system, I'm not sure what the heck
has happened to the mach versions (you might want to contact them about
that).

other than that though, I have played the games and they work well, at
least

they do using a decent sapi voice.

the inspector cindy games are rather close to gamebooks in the mystery
genre, but with full sounds for each location and fairly extensive audio
dialogue. I also rater like the way you arrive at a solution by gathering
information and then submitting it, rather than the books being forced to
a

set end.

Definitely fun, it's just a shame the demos and mach version aren't quite
as

obvius as they used to be.

all the best,

dark.

Hi Momma Peach,

Smile. There is an easy fix for that. press Windows+r, and when the run

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Speech\SpeechUX\sapi.cpl
into the run dialog and press enter. Now, select the 32-bit voice you
want set as your default on Win 7.

Hi,

As I recall the Crazy Darts game was freeware so go ahead and post away.
The only thing we discourage is piracy of registered games where the
author or authors have not expressly given permission to redistribute.

game menu and he can click on the name of a game, but once it goes to that
particular game, he can not click on any of the options for that game,

Hey Mama Peach and all

I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having. Since
Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder when
installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as opposed
to
the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I just
remembered someone else having a similar issue. All that needs done is to
just copy the game files into the other folder.

Hi,

Hmmm...It shouldn't matter If he quits Jaws before or after the game
starts. Once Jaws is unloaded it frees up the keyboard hooks it uses to
monitor keyboard input and DirectInput can acquire full control of the
keyboard. Although, it might be worth a try to test this just to be
sure. However, I don't really see this making any difference.

How about, in many of my games you must use the enter key next to the

I hope that might help.

Yep, that is where I had him install them to. Here is what happened when
he tries to play.
He clicks on Kitchens Inc on his desktop. The game loads just fine. He is
able to arrow through the different games. He lands on say Spanker. He is
able to click on that. Now when he arrows through these options, start
game, change voice, change volume, etc., he can't click on anything, not
even exit. So he tries to get out of this, but with no luck. He can't hit
escape or alt f4, it just seems to have locked up his machine. He has to
reboot his machine in order to make it go away. On River Raiders, he can
load the game, arrow through the menu options but he cannot click on
anything. He can hit the escape key and the game shuts down just fine.
Same thing on Top Speed 3.

Me either. It makes no sense. I noticed something when we were looking
around on his machine which is weird to me because my machine doesn't
show this. When I had him go into the C drive to find program files, he
has three program files folders, one is just program files, one is
program files 86 and the other is program files X86. I only have program
files and program files X86. Why would his have three and would this

Hi,

Weather the game is installed or not probably doesn't have anything to
do with it. Keep in mind the RS Client and Quentin's Playroom are not
written in Visual Basic. I think whatever is wrong with your friend's
games probably has to do with a Visual Basic compatibility issue with Win 7.

The Kitchen games use your default SAPI voice.
My other question is can he play any other games?

Hi MamaPeach,
Can your friend play any games?
Did he try Shades of Doom?
It could be that his SAPI voice is not set correctly to play Jim's games.
Does he use Microsoft Anna?

Re: [Audyssey] Game Help, Please

2012-04-02 Thread MamaPeach
He has turned his UAC off so I was told that should work. The games install
fine. He doesn't get an error, just can't click on any menu options in Jim
Kitchens Games, Top Speed 3 or River Raiders. He can play some games that
are ones that do not require an install but those that we have installed so
far, he can't go past the menu options because he cannot hit his enter key
with any results. The game just sits there..

Hi there.

The person who is having trouble starting those two games might try running
them as administrator. Hit the context key on the menu item that you would
normally press enter on to launch the game and arrow down to run as
administrator. Are they getting an error message?

On Mar 31, 2012, at 9:40 PM, Phil Vlasak wrote:

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't
supported by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6.
Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,
then you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.

When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right
of the space bar between the alt and control keys.

Hi Gamers,
A friend of mine is having a problem with a couple of games. We both have
installed the two games, River Raiders and Top Speed 3. I am able to use
the
games just fine. He, on the other hand, for some crazy reason, can't

happening to him. We both are running Windows 7, 64 bit machines. Like I

able to click on that. Now when he arrows through these options, start game,
change voice, change volume, etc., he can't click on anything, not even

machine in order to make it go away. On River Raiders, he can load the game,
arrow through the menu options but he cannot click on anything. He can hit
the escape key and the game shuts down just fine. Same thing on Top Speed 3.

It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files,
where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes,
and the other directory shouldn't exist. I recommend he check what was

He has unloaded Jaws, which is the only screenreader he uses, and he is

is Jaws causing this problem.

The only thing that springs to mind immediately is that Jaws or
another screen-reader might be interfering. If your friend can put the
screen-reader to sleep or just unload it while he plays, that would
likely do the trick. Just be certain that you make hotkeys that are
easy to remember for loading the game once you quit the screen-reader.
Most screen readers make a hotkey such as control-alt-n for loading
NVDA as an example. Hope that helps.

Hi,

It might be a problem. By default Windows 7 comes with Program files,
where 64-bit apps goes, and Program Files (x86), where 32-bit apps goes,
and the other directory shouldn't exist. I recommend he check what was
installed to Program Files (86), and then try and install them to the
proper location. In 90% of the cases most apps should go in c:\Program
Files (x86).

Hey Mama Peach and all

I think I recall what the issue might be your friend is having. Since
Jim's games automatically extract themselves to the winkit folder when
installed, I believe they extract to the program files folder as opposed to
the programx86 folder where the main Kitchen's in should be. I just
remembered someone else having a similar issue.

Hi MamaPeach,
Did you install games on your computer that he hasn't installed on his?
If so, tell him to install them.
Another example is Swamp.
The instructions are a little complicate but it does tell you how to get it
to work with windows 7, but the WinKit and Shades of doom installations make
the process easier.

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't
supported

by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6.
Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit,
then

you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.
When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right
of

the space bar between the alt and control keys.

screen reader like Jaws. If so the way Jaws handles keyboard input it
conflicts with Microsoft DirectInput. The only way to resolve this
problem is to A, quit Jaws, or B, put Jaws to sleep while the game is
running. That will resolve the conflict between DirectInput and Jaws.

Cheers!

Hi,
It could be that those games were written in a language that isn't supported
by windows anymore such as Visual basic 6.
Some game companies have added vb6 libraries to their game installations
that fix that problem.
If you downloaded and installed Shades of Doom or Jim Kitchen's WinKit, then
you have those vb6 libraries and those games will work.
Another hint is to install the games as an administrator instead of just
install them.
When you installed the games did you choose install as administrator?
This choice is found by using the context menu key, which is to the right of
the space bar between the alt and control keys.

Hi,

Does he have all the required dependencies. By that I'm specifically
asking if he has installed the Visual Basic 6 and DirectXS 8 legacy
runtime libraries. If not that would be a good reason to fail. As as
Windows Vista Visual Basic 6 support libraries do not ship with newer
Microsoft Windows products and must be installed manually.

Cheers!

Subject: [Audyssey] how to run Robert Betz's games under windows7

Hi all,
Here's an easy way to run Robert Betz's games and any other 32 bit
application under win7.
1. Download vmware player from
the vmware website
2. Once downloaded, install windows xp or anything you want. You don't
need to purchase windows xp if you want it. Go to
the vm archive
and download the vm you want totally free. Important! Get right is the
only thing I know of that can actually finish any of these downloads,
but it can still take up to 40 minutes. But to hopefully speed it up,
press alt+o for options once the download has started. Go to
accelerated segmented downloading where you can break the download
into segments 4/4 is the best choice I think.
3. Once the download is finished you should've clicked save not open,
open vmware player and press ctrl+o. Then go to the directory where
you extracted the vm then click on the vertual machine I think it's
called windows xp.vmdk then press enter on it. Click on play vertual
machine for xp and say you moved it when it asks did you move it or
copy it. Then press ctrl+g to go from 7 to xp. Then go through the
installers for these games just like you would normally, then enjoy!
And when you shut down xp it'll take you back to normal use with
windows7, it won't shut down the computer. Hope this helps.
best regards,
Jack

Re: [Audyssey] Quinton's Playroom

2012-02-15 Thread MamaPeach
Okay, that's what I thought. Another question, is there a way of making a
room private and then imputting in a password? Everytime I set up a game for
a particular person to join the game with me, other people join the game
while I am waiting for the person I have arranged to play with to enter into
the table. I don't want to be rude to these other people but I had already
made arrangements to play with someone else. It would be nice if a password
could be used that only the people you want to play can join the game.
