I think my friend Michael might be intrested in this Dag forum. I'm not much of a gamer much less a creator of games but I'm starting to like playing them. I've plaid plenty of old dos games back at the begining of the mlenium. However, I've just now gotten back into playing audio games since I've gotten my laptop. In a side note: I'm stil stuck in inquisator's Heartbeat. I'm in world 6. That's a li'l off topic, so I'll say so long for now, and I hope that your plans work out for audio or acessable games work. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Audiogames.net is intended as an index site, it points you to where games are and where you can download them, just use the link that says "download" on each game's entry page you can also use the "homepage" link to go to the website of whatever developer made the game too. there are some games (mostly text ones), played in web browsers, but the vast majority of actual audiogames you'll need to download and play on your computer. all the best, Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. As I understand it his entire purpose of acquiring the game was not to sell the game but to use it to add onto his Leasey product, to boost sales of Leasey, so seen from that perspective it makes sense. There is a lot that could be said here greedy, scummy, unfair, etc but the bottom line is he won't sell the game as a stand alone product because it was never his intention to do it that way. He is bundling it into his Leasey product and if you want it you have to pay the big bucks for Leasey. To be honest I don't think Brian Hartgen really thought about the ramifications of what this would do and how angry this would make the audio games community. He saw this as a simple business transaction, one in which would boost sales of Leasey, and he didn't care if it effectively took Q9 off the market. He is not a game developer per se, and thus he has no ties to the community the way many long time audio game developers do. So he just does not see it the same way we see it. It depends on how many cds you wanted to burn. It takes about 20-30 minutes to setup but once you have it all set, you can burn cds taking 10 minutes as long as your drive and processer are fast enough. And if you had the same thing on several units well. However I wouldn't suggest unless you hired a big company doing it all yourself for a large group, while I don't mind burning cds for myself by the time you set em up assuming its not an iso or a perminant project it can take 30 mins to an hour to get fully setup and burning a single disk. Now in that reguard if you had the material which I don't braille would be faster to produce once the files weere set up and all you'd need to do was supply paper every once in a while and then staple it together and send it. Mp3 cds or daisy cds would take just as long to burn though having an electronic braille or audio upload excluding cds fully would take less time probably. However I must confess I enjoy braille to read for a pamphlet, just about everything I get is a download or cd and sometimes I wish to read it but there you go. Its probably easier if you can afford it to produce braille for a large group if you are doing it yourself or from somewhere. Ofcause if you have the resources to produce audio or digital at high speed then I'd go for that or both if you could but it all depends what you have and how fast and for what size of a group. For a small group unless its changed braille may be costly to produce audio not so much. But that may change as I have been out the loop for a number of years On 27/06/2015 6:59 a.m., john wrote: I'd say at least a solid day of sitting at the computer - but I've only burnt a couple audio cds in my life, so somebody who does more of them would know better. What is this leaflet for dark. I may be interestted getting a coppy of it or any mag you did. I guess once you got it, the easiest way to smash this debate into the bground is to previde the costs per unit to produce in sertain formats. obviously audio/ documents would have to be hosted so could cost. cds I know are around 20 or so sents I know cases can be up to a dollar for a slim line case a paper envelope would be cheaper. Braille all depends. electronic is small but your basic print copy may cost and I am not sure. I think though in the end you would have to choose what you got it in.I'd ffor example be happy to get audio/html/ digital formats especially if it wasn't local to me. However I guess if a publication was released a lot like some reading material I had a little ago I guess I could go the braille rout so I would have something to look foreward for. Well it all depends man on what you have I think. As a technology user I'd prefur to have the audio download because I don't have to pay for shipping of cds or braille material. Though I have recieved pamphlets in html and text to. On the other side I guess if I knew what the audio/ braille cost for postage I may actually go for the braille letter so I could keep it because I like that sort of thing. But its what you have. I wouldn't have robotic synths read the audio though a human voice maybe and with audio having reviews of various things yeah if I had to pay for that maybe. Though to be honest for us technos there are so many forums etc we really don't need the pamphlet, even the audyssey mag has sort of outlived its life though thats mostly because we have had so many stretches with it not producing that its no longer the big thing it was. Pluss there are to many indie devs out now. On 27/06/2015 7:56 a.m., dark wrote: Hi John. audio cd in synbth, even though listening to synths isn't my favourite option is what I was thinking, sinse again it's another format and I know there are programs that can easily create mp3 files from standard text. Obviously cds would be harder to produce as you said, but having a few kicking around that could be copied or listened to at conventions would have the same help in distribution methods as anything else. Dark wrote: Again both fatigue in movement and uncertainty in amount moved are mechanics that would work extremely well in some games, indeed I can see how in interceptor that will make for an interesting battle element, but not really for action games to replicate mainstream mechanics, because the point of the analogue movement in a game like Mario is that the player Could! move as he/she wants if his/her grasp of the mechanics was up to the task. (end of quote) I agree with you here. Uncertainty mechanics of this sort, as well as analog movement uncertainties, take some time to analyze and evaluate. I think that doing it the way I suggested, while not the same, might provide a possibility, but I see your point viz a viz versus the style of an analog controller. Dark wrote: Actually the reason I mention this movement mechanic in so much detail is that there is absolutely no earthly reason why it could not be replicated in audio. Even if you couldn't show as much detail with respect to ledge configurations and vertical movements, there is no reason why the horizontal movement of the characterand indeed what jumps you do need to make could not have this analogue quality. A game like Q9 or superliam would be much harder and much more addictive, sinse you could not just instantly stop and line yourself up with an oncoming enemy, or jump precisely over one pit, indeed many simple atari 2600 or Nes games like pit fall had such rock hard difficulty precisely for this reason, sinse the player needed to master and become experienced in the use of the game mechanics much as you'd need to learn to play a musical instrument or a sport before they could be any good at the game. (end of quote) Agreed. I think we're touching on the same issue here. I wonder if the problem with this isn't more a problem of underestimating the capabilities of audio to demonstrate this kind of movement, and the ability of audio gamers to make these kinds of analyses and act accordingly. No offense to our developers. Most of the games I have played have been very well constructed, but movement, targeting, and other aspects have been very smooth and easy to predict for the most part. At least, in my experience and as I have noted elsewhere, that is probably much more limited than some members of the list. Dark wrote: Thinking about this I do wonder if part of the issue is the audio representation itself. After all in a graphical game it is necessary to have an actual, measurable distance between the player and a given object and thus need to calculate how long it takes the player to get there and what scrolling the screen needs to do, where as in audio sinse most audio games always show things from the player's perspective exclusively the way the game shows the distance to the player and the actual speed of distance traveled are the same thing. (end of quote) I wonder about that. I remember in the demo of the Tarzan Junior game that the pits were telegraphed a little before them. If that telegraph was not always a uniform distance ahead, and if there were a way to also telegraph the width of the pits and vary both games with pits to jump would become much more interesting. I haven't played Q9 but I'd be interested in how it handles some of these issues as it seems like Shades of Doom to be a touch stone for some of the design decisions in play here. Dark Wrote (in reference to how Jim Kitchens' monopoly game works with squares) That difference in information is the type of difference in the view between audio and graphical games, indeed Packman vs packman talks is very much this way. Now if you imagine instead of having predefined squares you just have a smooth board to slide your peace around, where as in the audio game you press the arrows and get a movement sound. Well on the physical board the speed of your hand moving the peace relative to the overview will give you a clear impression of the movement speed involved and at any give time you know say how far the distance between your peace and the corner of the board is, where as in the audio game, sinse you don't get a complete view of the hole board you can't relate your speed to object movement. (end of quote) True. However, I think it's possible to give some of this information. reverb, sound shadow, wind noises as in Entombed, and the like can give directional and distance information. Couple with other audio cues it might be possible to give a player an idea of distance traversed and speed. However, I think I should probably retire from the field. I am not a technical person. Re: [Audyssey] (no subject)
Hi jeremy. My point was not that it was not possible to show information around the player at a distance, only that it is possible that the lack of analogue mechanics in audio games is possibly a function of the game's audio view, sinse any audio game has the player as the center of the focus by which the soundscape is related and relates all aspects of the game according to their distance relative to the player, where as a graphical game shows the player as more a part of an over all environment. My admitedly slightly clumsy monopoly board analogy was an attempt to explain this idea, though I admit I might not have been successful. Dscribing scrolling is rather like trying to describe sound increasing with promximity to a person who has always been deaf, the physics of distance is understood but getting across what the rest of the concepts are is more than a little difficult. I do see this sort of thing as helpful though sinse if it is possible to break down what qualities and mechanics make a game like packman, mario mega man etc as adictive as it was it is possible to then considder how best to translate those elements into audio, what might need altering and what stay the same. Analogue movement is a major case of something that would be quite possible but doesn't seem to have been done yet. Beware the Grue! Hello. I was in the app store last night, and I found this great audio game. It's call 1812 Heart Of Winter, and it is by Telekomunikacja. The great thing about this game is that it is fully accessible to the blind. The game is free. Make sure you get the one that is just call 1812 Heart Of Winter and not the one that has the letters HQ beside it. The reason is because that is not the english version. The one I'm am telling you about is in full english, and here is the description below from the app store. Experience the unique setting of an audio game! Become Korwin Giedyminowicz, a soldier in Napoleon's army in the 1812 Russia campaign, and take part in an adventure that merges history with fantasy. Play the game without the need to look at the screen close your eyes and immerse yourself in fluid narration, sound effects and music composed especially for the game. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Size doesn't bother me at all. While if it was several gb it might be an issue, I dcan't really conceive of it being a problem given the size of audio games. Sarah is I beleve somewhere around the 110 mb mark, so I shouldn't worry, especially if it's going to knock the quality of the audio which is afterall, rather the point in an audio game. Re: [Audyssey] (no subject)
well, on my 10mb no cap connection large files aren't much of a problem, I so vote for quality. I remember back when the old mota (as in mysteries of the aztechs) had cd quality sounds, then for no reason thomas compressed the sounds to 22khz, which sounds, well, not as good as it used to. at the moment mota (the new one) SOUNDS excellent and it should stay that way imo. - Original Message - From: Zachary Kline zkl...@speedpost.net To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, October 04, 2010 5:22 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] (no subject) Hi, I'm in favor of quality myself. quality also then, I don't mind what I get but I do pay a rather high price for each file I get over a sertain point that being 2bucks per gb. I no longer have an unlimited connection after my isp went south and made its plan go away. As a result I have less of a data cap to deal with about 15gb. naturally any big files will cost me more. otherwise I don't mind. whatever works. well I'd have full quality but if you can make it so the download install is a bit smaller would help as I pay for my data. otherwise quality is no issue. I suppose I have listened to 128mb mp3s all my life and don't mind but the full version is fine. [Audyssey] Moderator Subject Reminder was Someone Answer
Hi Michael and all, This is a friendly moderator reminder about subject lines. On the Audyssey list we, the moderators, ask that your subject lines are related to the actual content or topic being discussed in your message. If you are talking about Technoshock but you give it a subject line like, Someone Answer, the subject line doesn't in anyway shape or form indicate what you are talking about. Therefore if you are talking about Technoshock I'd expect Technoshock to be in the subject line such as, A Question About Technoshock. Also not only should the subject line be related to the topic being discussed we, the moderators, ask that the subject line be phrased in a friendly non-offensive manner. Having a subject like, Someone Anser, isn't very friendly in my opinion. It sounds like a rude and a selfish person demmanding someone answer his/her questions right now. Remember folks we are are all on this list to have fun and talk about games, and nobody is in a position to demmand answers to questions in such an unfriendly manner. Even if someone doesnt' take it as rude its still not the best way to ask your questions. There are better ways of getting your point accross. Thanks. On 9/30/10, michael barnes c...@samobile.net wrote: earlier today shawn had said that technoshock could had more levels but the maker of the game didn't add them. he said something about a ending. so here is the question. does the game have a ending? if so what is the ending? --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Bgt is a ssimple scripting language, meaning that you can control exactly what is happening at all times. The range of functions that are in the engine will of course grow over time, in order to allow for creation of as many different types of games as possible. The way that the engine is designed it is very easy to add new features to it, and so anything that is demanded by enough customers will definitely be added in. [Audyssey] Moderator subject lines.
Hello list, This is a friendly reminder from your moderators to please remember to give your emails quality subject lines that accurately describe the subject matter you wish to discuss. This is important for two very good reasons. One, many people do not read messages that do not seam to be of any interest to them. So if you are asking a question about Shades of Doom, Monte, whatever and you have a subject like Hi, Hello, A question For You, etc many people in a hurry will pass the question by because they don't know what the message is about and may not have time to scan it for content. I myself usually pass up messages that appear not to have any interesting content. I get on average 200 emails a day between two email accounts. As a result i am one of those who can't read each and every email so I go strait for the ones that seam the most important and trash the rest. Second, everything we write on list is archived for future access. If a gamer wants to research the archives for an answer to a puzzle he or she has with a game a good subject line will help him or her identify the email of most help to him/her. A really great walkthrough of Shades of Doom could be in the archives but if it is filed under an anonomous subject like Hello then the researcher will have much more difficulty locating it than if it was given a subject like Shades of Doom Walkthrough or SOD Walkthrough. Also often times subject matter thends to change during the course of a thread. When that happens it is good list practice to rename the subject line to reflect the new topic. For example, if you are talking Monte and Raceway comes up in the topic maybe a new subject line could be Raceway was Monte. So please remember to give each and every email an appropriate subject line that describes in a few words what game and topic the email relates to. [Audyssey] Moderator subject lines.
Hi all, I'm just dropping a friendly reminder that it is always best to name your messages with meaningful subject lines. Poorly named subjects or leaving the subject field blank may cause you to miss out on someones input, or others may miss out on meaningful input. Allot of folks today, myself included, often judge a message by subject only, and if the subject doesn't sound appealing in to the trash it goes. So remember to name your messages with a subject line that best describes the topic being discussed, and if the topic changes change the subject to match the new topic. Thanks. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Yeah, let's close this thread down. A new thread has been created called free games, and let's move the discussion over there. Smile. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Moderator subject lines.
Thanks for the reminder. I started training for a full time job on Monday and haven't had time to keep up with Email. As a result, I currently have 730 unread ones. I have already seen some with no subject line. Those, whatever they were, have been trashed, as will others with subject lines I'm not interested in. I may have had an answer for someone, or may have had a comment to make on a topic, but since I either did not know what the message was, or was not interested in it based on the subject line, it will never be read. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, April 22, 2006 2:40 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Moderator subject lines. Yes, that's what he says. Wonder if his friend was also trying to get cheatcodes to pipe 2, and shades of doom without earning them?
