I must confess, while I have had the odd issue with sapi, mostly installing
the delusalex file sorts things out. In fact the only major problem I've had

was the one requiring the dll fix you provided Tom.

Generally I'm extremely pleased with sapi, and indeed rely on it for several

games including all of the gma titles, vip mud, jims games etc, pluss
with realspeak daniel as my default sapi voice I have a pretty good voice
for the games too.

 Hi Thomas,

I tend to disagree with you. You know when you said
SAPI tends to break quite a lot in my experience. I have not found that to

be the case. I mean I have been producing games that rely on the sapi5
voices for 7 years now and have only had a few people need to even use the

DelUserLex file to fix their speech. I have had a whole bunch more people

have the problem with Vistas and Windows sevens UAC not liking WinZip
self extracting zip files. But for the most part allot of people play my
 sapi5 games with no problems.

 Hi John,
Ideally I'd use something like the JNI or JNA to wrap SAPI directly,
but I think using a VB Script is definitely the easiest way to go
about it in your case. I'm no expert on this topic, but it sounds like
something that is worth a try.

The only downside to this I can see is that SAPI tends to break quite
a lot in my experience. I don't know why, but some peopel install and
then uninstall certain third-party voices which ends up breaking SAPI
completely. When that happens it can be a real tech support issue
helping them getting SAPI working correctly again. It is a nice
technology when it works, but when it doesn't it can be a major pain
 in the butt.

But concidering I know more than when I started I won't probably need

Re: [Audyssey] SAPI and VB Script

2010-06-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,
Well, I'm glad I was able to help. The JNA is a fairly recent Java
development that allows you to quickly wrap static Windows libraries,
and use them in a Java application. Obviously, the advantages are
huge here as it allows you to extend your application beyond the Java
JRE and use native Windows libraries directly. On one hand you lose
the portibility of Java, but on the other hand it allows you to take
advantage of operating specific stuff without having to resort to
writing a JNI wrapper. It is one of those things you can hardly do
without if writing an application that requires the use of native
libraries.

 Shaun, Thomas, Jim, and Dark,

Thanks for the quick and on-point technical guidance.

I'm particularly grateful for the tip about JNA.
Even though I've been doing Java for money for over a decade, I'd never
 heard of JNA.
Going to research it this next week, both for our games and the
 consulting I do.

In any event, we'll definitely use the information you gave in our SAPI
 project.

Thanks. You guys are the best.

[Audyssey] SAPI and VB Script

2010-06-19 Thread John Bannick

Thomas or any other major coder out there,

Please give me your opinion of a possible technical solution to getting
SAPI into our games.

I recently discovered that Windows XP and later include the ability to
run Visual Basic scripts from the DOS command line.

Also, I recently discovered that said VB Scripts can speak SAPI voices.
Thirdly, I can invoke VB from within a Java app.

I wrote an experimental Java program that does just that.

It seems that we could ship our games with a simple VB script that they
invoke, and Voila! we have SAPI speech.

What do you think?
As both a game developer and game player, what are the negatives, if any?

Thanks,

John

hmmm that would work
however av and other security programs like to detect vbs scripts as viruses.
but yeah that is a point not sure how usefull it would be.

Re: [Audyssey] SAPI and VB Script

2010-06-19 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,
Ideally I'd use something like the JNI or JNA to wrap SAPI directly,
but I think using a VB Script is definitely the easiest way to go
about it in your case.

Smile.
