you are right about symbian being discontinued in favour of windows
phone 7, and although I just got a nokia e7 to try it out, I am
beginning to feel its more hastle than its worth, as the keyboard
part just isn't well designed, its so easy to knock the touch screen
with your hand while texting.
and although with mobile speak this isn't a huge problem, I do find
the home screens on symbian 3 pathetic, only being able to have 4
shortcuts per screen is just stupid, and both mobile speak and talks
don't read all icons on the home screen, plus interacting with a
phone switchboard system isn't very easy, especially selecting
numbers on the touch screen. although I could open the phone to
physically dial in the numbers once on the phone I don't see why I
should have to.

the I phone is tempting, but I don't like the voices I have heard so
far on it, and although I guess I could get a blutooth keyboard, its
just more equipment to lug around, and I would need to keep it charged up.
plus I couldn't easily stand around in a public place and text with
it like I could do with a phone that has a physical keyboard, as I
would have to have the I phone in one hand, and keyboard in another.
unfortunately I think its unlikely the I phone will ever get a
physical keyboard, given that steve jobs hates physical buttons, and
feels that devices should be asthetically pleasing and easy for the
sighted world to use.

 Hi,

Talking about the iphone, I have to admit that I was somewhat dubious
 about
it before I got one. Now I have, I really do think that they are the way
 to
go. Voiceover works brilliantly in my opinion. Yes it takes a great deal
 of
getting used too but it's worth the learning curve if you ask me.

The lack of a touch keyboard did put me off for a long long time but
voiceover gets round this quite well.

I have also used voiceover on the net to a degree. I've checked my account
at http://www.gamestotal.com for my unification wars game that I play, it
works on there as well and that's a pretty html intensive page there.

It's also very good where gaming is concerned, because you don't always
 have
to use the screen to get where you're going, you can tilt the phone in
various ways to play certain types of games. Certainly I would advise you
 to
give an iphone device a good go because it is well worth it.

you are right about symbian being discontinued in favour of windows
phone 7, and although I just got a nokia e7 to try it out, I am
beginning to feel its more hastle than its worth, as the keyboard part
just isn't well designed, its so easy to knock the touch screen with
 your hand while texting.
and although with mobile speak this isn't a huge problem, I do find the
home screens on symbian 3 pathetic, only being able to have 4 shortcuts
per screen is just stupid, and both mobile speak and talks don't read
all icons on the home screen, plus interacting with a phone switchboard
system isn't very easy, especially selecting numbers on the touch
screen. although I could open the phone to physically dial in the
numbers once on the phone I don't see why I should have to.

the I phone is tempting, but I don't like the voices I have heard so far
on it, and although I guess I could get a blutooth keyboard, its just
more equipment to lug around, and I would need to keep it charged up.
plus I couldn't easily stand around in a public place and text with it
like I could do with a phone that has a physical keyboard, as I would
have to have the I phone in one hand, and keyboard in another.
unfortunately I think its unlikely the I phone will ever get a physical
keyboard, given that steve jobs hates physical buttons, and feels that
devices should be asthetically pleasing and easy for the sighted world
 to use.

Daron, Although I have downloaded many games for the i-phone, some from
Storm8 and some from Luken, I'd be interested in learning which games you
recommend or have used which you find playable by totally blind individuals?

Hi daren,
I am now really considering the I phone, as I found out about several
cases you can get for the I phone that come with built in blutooth
qwerty keyboards,
from reading reviews, they all sound like they have advantages and
disadvantages over each other.
do you think using one of these cases would make game play easier? the
reason I really didn't want an I phone was because of the touch screen,
but it looks like this issue is at least partly solved.
have you or anyone else reading this had experience of these combined
case keyboards?

Re: [Audyssey] accessible games for android

2011-09-16 Thread alex wallis

Hi Daren,
well to save you hunting around, I will provide you with the names of
the keyboards I have found so far,

one is called the nuu MinniKey,
another is called the tk421
and the third is called the
buddy case, and is available from
www.boxwave.com
apparently this particular keyboard has a version 1 and two, with two
having a layout similar to a regular qwerty keyboard, though unlike
version 1 it doesn't have a dedicated number row, this particular
keyboard sounds interesting though as aparrently you can get 45 days
worth of battery from one charge. Having said that I read a very damming
review that totally slammed this keyboard, so I am not sure as I have
read equally positive and negative ones about all of the ones I have
listed so far.

I have read reviews of all of these keyboards, and they all sound very
different to each other, with advantages and disadvantages to each.

One thing that does concern me about the I phone is interacting with the
touch screen on a call, for example when trying to interact with a menu
driven phone system.
I recently got a nokia e7, running talks and I have decided to sell it,
as I just wasn't able to find the numbers on the touch screen for
dialing in pin codes for my bank and voice mail, it was just two slow,
and I was getting cut off or transferred to operators.
having said that, one thing that really got in the way on the phone was
having to tap a virtual soft key to even bring up the keyboard before I
could even start trying to find the numbers.

mm perhaps we should either start a new thread or take this off list, as
I suppose it is going way off topic for android, and also we don't want
to annoy the mods, what do you think?

[Audyssey] accessible games for android

2011-09-14 Thread alex wallis

Hi list.
I am just wondering, are there any accessible games for the android
mobile phone operating system?
I see there is a list for I phone and I pad on pcsgames.net, but haven't
scene much about android.
I am considering ditching symbian in favour of this OS, as I am not
finding talks very easy to use on a touch screen phone, and the same is
also true of mobile speak.
I have no intention of getting an I phone, as I don't want to go purely
touch screen, so I am now considering android. also of course symbian is
being discontinued in a few years in favour of mango which currently has
no accessibility, so I think it might be time to leave the sinking ship
of symbian.

many thanks for any help,
alex.

well on that note alex I hear that nokia may be dropping simbian in
the next 3 years and going win mobile7.

android and iphone are the best choices.
Iphone does have good voices and well the bluetooth keyboard is
something I may get.

Either that or one of the 5th adition sets with keyboards and screens in them.
Getting back on topic I have not ever heard of a android game for the
blind yet though everything on there is secure and you can buy on the
computer with your account which rocks.
I just found out though that prepay at least in nz can be gotten on
iphone for 1200 bucks and who knows.
Apple has a good touchscreen, though part of me thinks I would
probably get adicted to games grin
