Re: [Audyssey] space strategy games was RE: Game concepts BGT Version1.1 Released!

2011-11-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Darren,

Ah, I see. As I recall the version for the Amiga was a little
different from the Atari versions. I never understood quite why, but
every time Elite was ported or rewritten for a different platform they
offered different ships, slightly different missions, etc. Perhaps it
was a marketing ploy to purchase the same game more than once or the
developer just liked making different versions. However, I do recall
playing two or three different versions back in the 80's.

2011-11-21 Thread Darren Harris
Yeah I had heard that, the Atari 520st was somewhat different as well.
Although I never got that far with it but to be honest it wasn't a patch on
the omega version of the game.

On the omega version, you could scoop fuel from stars, use the fuel scoop to
get cargo, my favourite mission in that game was the cloking ship one
because if you completed it and destroyed the ship, you got to keep the
cloking device. Another one was for an ecm jammer, I can't remember what
mission that was but again it was another ship, the hardest one was the
naval one for the thargoids. They just kept coming! You had to deliver
papers on the making of the thargoid ship to some navel base something like
that and every system you went too, depending on your rating, you'd get 3, 4
or even 5 of the beggers on you at any 1 time. imagine that, 5 or so
thargoid ships, loaded with remotely controlled thargons, yeah that was hard
hard hard! Lol in some cases I'd turn my ship around and use my retro's
pointed at the planet just so I could get there!

Oh yeah dark, I loved elite. Used to play it on my commodore omega 500. I
also played frontier elite 2 which was much much harder. Although fun
because you could land on planets. I used to get the big frater ship called
the panther clipper, I filled it with shield generators, this is for fun
mind, then I'd take off and turn the engines off and let the ship bounce! It
was rather amusing to say the least! The other thing I liked to do is to
fuel scoop planets and stars.

Yes elite is the father of the space sim, I miss it a great deal. It was
very inventive for it's time, frontier even more so, purely because of the
sheer physics involved and the size of the actual universe. It was basically
the home galaxy all of it. incredible really to get over 10 stars
and planets on 2 little floppies. And then of course there was the whole
science thing of the hyperspace affect. What took a few seconds in
hyperspace took days in real time. it was measured out according to
mathematical formula.

Yes we need a game that brings all the core elite elements into play. Also
with a few elements from the x beyond the frontier series.

Hi Darren.

i like the idea of a space stratogy game, sinse having single player
versions is very different and imho far more preferable to a multiplayer
one. However, if it were a single player game I'd want it to have some
significant differences from the online affairs available.

elite for instance, which is possibly the most famous game of that sort,
though it used textual menues for combat missions and buying and selling,
actually had a fully 3D flight system. You just set the nav beacon for where

you wanted and followed it in full 360 degree 3D action, dodging pirates or
fighting on the way.

This is the sort of thing I'd love to see in a stand alone single player
game, features that really make use of what is there.

Castaways for instance in it's basic map structure with grid coordinates and

ticks of time is in one sense rather like soemthing like tribal wars.
however, even if we ignore the fact that your opponents in castaways are
dynamic according to the mission rather than thousands of online players,
the game has an ai which is truly unique, and makes the management of jobs,
people and resources far more interesting and dynamic than any online game
could do.

So, while I'd love a space trader (especially for the exploring), I'd want
something more in the game than just flying, trading and possibly turn based

combat, sinse Ce does many of those things extremely well pluss more.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

2011-11-20 Thread Christopher Bartlett
I would be creating either a space combat game with the emphasis on features
to make real time combat doable, or a game in the style of Anacreon, an
empire-building, resource management and combat game. I suppose at some
future date, I could mesh those two projects, so that the combat in one
would seamlessly move into the tactical space game, but that's way more
ambitious than I am at this early stage.

talking about those classics you'll end up talking me into starting

However, I too would like to see an accessible game along those lines.
With memory and disk space relatively inexpensive on todays machines
it is quite possible to create something even more spectacular than
those classics. So it would totally rock if something actually came of
this.

Cheers!
