Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Tim, Well, glad to hear that. Although, when it comes to wrestling games there are a couple different kinds to choose from. One, is the real time style games for the XBox, Play Station, etc that essentially allows you to select a performer from a list of performers and wrestle in several matches in real time. they are obviously more fun, but a whole lot more complex to program than what I am doing. Second, is the text based wrestling games along the lines of Piledriver, wrestling League Manager, etc where you have a turn based game where you have a list of performers to choose from and play matches by selecting choices from a menu or list of possible actions for your turn. Its still fun, but probably less exciting than being able to do all this in real time. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Dark, That was basically my point. All the performers do is take an existing move and change the name to match their persona. If Shawn Michaels kicks a guy in the chin he calls it Sweet Chin Music but if Sheamus kicks a guy in the chin he calls it a Bro Kick. Essentially we are talking about the same move but with two different names. Their is Nothing particularly special about the moves themselves other than that particular superstar has chosen it to be one of his/her signature moves. For example, Candice Michelle use to name all of her signature moves after candies or sweets. Which makes sense given Candi is short for Candice. So for her a Russian legsweep was a Sugar Rush, and a Victory Roll was a Candy Wrapper. There were plenty of other examples like that which were all designed around a candy oriented theme even though all the moves themselves were pretty generic. The more famous the superstar, the more unique his/her character is, they tend to adopt new names for signature moves that reflect their persona even though the moves themselves are textbook examples of professional wrestling moves used all over the world under other more generic names. Cheers! On 2/1/12, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. I like the idea of renaming standard moves as finishers, sinse you are absolutely right. Cross-over would be cool, as long as you then maintain some or other form of skills database, where a wrestler who has certain specific skills would be better at certain types of actions - pretty sure you've already got something like that in there, and aside from that, their most theatrical theme sound/song would be best, but, suppose you'd otherwise want to let the player/user choose either their own sound file, or select from a list or something..? Plus it is cross-platform and runs on both Windows and Linux operating systems. Which brings me to my question. As I am currently working on adding entrance theme music etc to the game right now it is sometimes hard to decide on which entrance theme music to use as the performers tend to frequently change their entrance music on a regular basis. In most cases I'll simply use the most current music if that particular performer is still signed to the WWE. The problem is that there are a number of performers who have quit the WWE and have signed with another promotion like TNA or Ring of Honor. For example, Mickie James was one of the most popular divas during her run in the WWE and during her Diva's title reign. Should I use the most current entrance music from the WWE, or should I grab the entrance music from TNA to essentially bring the entrance music completely up to date? Which brings up another but interesting question. If you think I should use the TNA entrance music should I then gear this game towards a crossover game not focusing specifically on WWE, TNA, etc or Ring of Honor but make this sort of an all star wrestling game with a huge roster of WWE, Ring of Honor, and TNA performers? Hi Tom, I'd love to see a type of cross over game, with all the stars from WWE, and TNA. A lot of WWE superstars (old WWE/WWF stars), are now in TNA, and it'd be good to see them in the game. I have a tun of WWE/WWF music if you need any entrance themes you can't find, just let me know, and I'll find it for you. The odds are I have it. Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Tom. by quite a coincidence, my brother (who is a big wrestling fan), went to a tna main event with some of his friends recently, and gave me a ful report. According to him, even people who were in the tna but who'd been previously in the wwe were pretty obviously the same wrestlers, even when copywrite changes had to be made. For instance, Bubber ray Dugly couldn't wrestle under the name bubber, so wrestled as Bully ray, though it was pretty obviously the same wrestler (he even referenced his old tag team partner Deevon). Hulk Hogan even made a guest appearence, and in fact came out to his old 1990's theme real American rather than the newer one he got later on, simply because that music was so much associated with hulk as a character. so, it seems pretty clear from this that it's the music and personality most associated with particular wrestlers that matter, not whatever promo or even federation they're in. for instance, I'd be very disappointed if Hulk didn't! have the real american music, or was missed from the game sinse he's now wrestling for tna, though notes on who is from where could indeed be informative to people like myself who aren't as up on wrestling (my brother is currently far more a fan than I am). Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Dan, I agree that expanding it to include other federations is a good idea long term, but I'm interested to know why you don't like the current WWE roster? Some of the performers like CM Punk, Sheamus, Randy Ortan, etc have been around a while and I happen to like them. I agree there are some I don't care for, but over all I felt the current roster isn't too bad. Just curious to get your input on it. That might help influence how I design this game. I will say, though, the WWE womens roster is a bit thin right now. Over the last three or four years most of the female performers have left the WWE looking for employment somewhere else. Just last year Maryse, Gail Kim, Michelle McCool, and Melina Parez, quit the second their contracts were up to wrestle for someone else. Gail Kim, of course, is now on TNA Impact, and Melina is wrestling on the independent circuit. Victoria/Tara quite in 2009, and Mickie James left in 2010.Both have since signed with TNA as well. So I'm not sure what is going on, but one thing is for sure the divas division is losing some of its best and well known performers to other wrestling federations like TNA or the independent circuit. Its getting a little tiring to see Kelly Kelly or Eve Torres as the only contenders for the Diva's title. Something else I want to do by expanding the roster is add more titles. For example, on TNA they have a women's tag team division with tag team titles. The WWE hasn't had a womens tag team title since the late 1980's when the jumping Bomb Angels beat the Glamour Girls at Royal Rumble I. After the Jumping Bomb Angels left the WWE to return to the independent circuit back in Japan the women's tag team titles seemed to be abandoned. Then again, the way WWE's women's division is going there aren't that many possibilities for women's tag teams. The way I see it right now they would be limited to Eve and Kelly Kelly, Beth and Natalya, Brie and Nikki Bella, and could team Alecia Fox up with Kaitlin for a women's tag team division. That's not quite a lot of options considering Layla and A.J. are both out due to injuries and Rosa hasn't been in competition since the diva's battle royal last year. Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Dark, That's a good point, but I am also attempting to reduce the number of performers to a manageable size. That's why I initially started with the WWE roster since I'm most familiar with those performers, but have little to know experience with Ring of Honor. I chose to skip a lot of performers who have retired, died, etc just to bring the database down to a manageable number of performers I can humanly hard code into the database for the moment. Obviously, if I were going to add someone like Hulk Hogan I'd use Real American because it is by and large the most well known theme music he used. Same goes for a number of other superstars like Brett Hart who is best associated with Hitman which Brett Hart used for most of the 1990's, and Jim Johnston has created variations of over the course of Brett's wrestling career. In fact, Natalya's entrance music, New Foundation, is just a newer variation of Hitman. However, my question was mainly aimed at what to do with wrestlers who are still active and change their persona and/or music for reason x. Its one thing having long established performers like Hulk Hogan or Brett Hart who have more or less retired and can be best be remembered at the height of their career. Its another thing when we have rookies who have not established a name for themselves, go away for a few months, and come back with a totally new persona, theme music, whatever. Cheers! Hi Jacob, Yes, the game does use a stats system, still buggy, but it determines how successful a certain hold or move is. Anyway, all of the music tracks are stored in standard ogg files so if you really don't like a certain theme song you can save your own favorite entrance music as an ogg file in Audacity, Goldwave, or Soundforge and simply overwrite the default. Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Tom. In that case, how about a sort of best of the best type of contest. If there is limited space in the game, it seems only fair that the wrestlers best known and best liked by yourself, (and possibly some others here), should be in the game, irrispective of when they wrestled or what they are doing now. For instance, I'd personally love to see Hulk hogan and Bret heart, even though they technically retired, (even Hulk is semi retired and talks more now than he wrestles, though given his age that's not surprising), along with some more modern wrestlers from different federations such as Kurt angle, edge etc. I'd suggest you just skip anyone you think is just a flash in the pan, and concentrate on the real heroes. In cases of conflict, just go with whichever one you like best in personality and wrestling technique. Of course, I myself haven't seen victoria or! tara wrestle, so it wouldn't make a huge difference to me which you chose, and other people might think differently. Still, making it a best of the best with a bias to those you think would be good in the game would stil imho be the best solution. heck, you could even make this a little tongue in cheek, call it the best of time wrestling federation. Cheers! I would go all-star, using the intro music that that particular star currently uses, along with a note about what organization he or she is currently with. --- Shepherds are the best beasts, but Labs are a close second. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, February 01, 2012 3:38 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game Hi everyone, I've got a real quick question for you wrestling fans. As many of you might remember I've been working on a turn based wrestling game similar to the old Piledriver game for Dos accept my version uses a more up to date database of superstars from the WWE, including both male and female performers, as well as some sounds and music. However, in 2010 she quit the WWE and has been wrestling for TNA for the last couple of years. I have something of a choice to make in a case like that. If we do decide on a crossover type game I could in theory add a little note beside each wrestler that this performer is currently signed to Raw, Smackdown, TNA, etc. What do you think? --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Michael, Yes, the ability to create your own custom wrestler is on the todo list. I haven't added it yet, because I want to get the game stable and work out all the mechanics without any unnecessary complications. However, it has been on the todo list for a while now for a couple of good reasons. For starts there are so many performers past and present that no single person can program them all into a single game. That project would take years to complete if done by a single person. So having the ability to manually add that performer, if desired, would help out a lot. Even so I am trying to at least create a database of around 100 of the top performers over the last decade or so. One way I can do that is simply by the performers accomplishments and reputation. ;Someone who has had multiple title reigns will more than likely find their way into the database before someone who hasn't had any title reigns. For example, Edge is one of those performers. He is a multiple time world heavy weight champion, former tag team champion, and former United States champion. Even though he was forced into earlyretirement due to a neck injury his reputation and past history makes him one of the top performers of the decade along with guys like Randy Orton and John Cena. On the other hand, someone like R-Truth in my opinion is a take it or leave it kind of performer without having had any title reigns that I recall, and he personally just turns me off to begin with. So R-Truth probably won't be added to the database unless someone specifically requests him. He's just not what I call top performer quality. The second is some people like creating a custom wrestler from scratch. Phil and Dark both pointed out to me when this project began last fall that people who are not big time wrestling fans might identify with a custom wrestler such as themselves rather than a top performer they don't know. So the option is being added for that reason as well. Cheers! On 2/1/12, michael barnes c...@samobile.net wrote: Hello, Thomas. Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Dark, Well, that's essentially what I've done in drafting the initial database. There are plenty of male and female performers who are just a flash in the pan, no substance, and I think were only signed to fill out the roster. Its apparent to anyone who has watched wrestling for any length of time who the real stars are, and who has had the most achievements over all. So what I've done in creating my database is to write up a list of what I believe to be the top 100 stars over the last decade or so, and eliminated performers I feel are just second stringers. For instance, you mentioned Edge. He's definitely in my top 100 list of male performers. The reason is pretty obvious. He is a multitime world champion, former United States champion, and former tag team champion. His achievements pretty much speak for themselves, and given his huge popularity it would seem strange to exclude a top star of his caliber simply because he had to retire early due to damage to his neck and spine. Now, there are stars like Alex Reilly who started out as the Miz's personal assistant, and briefly got some fame when the Miz turned on him and they started their fude. After Reilly won the fude against Miz he hasn't been back on Raw although he is still under contract. The fact of the matter is at this point he was just filler, a flash in the pan, but is still a rookie without much experience, history, or any achievements that would put him anywhere near the top 100 superstars. We see pretty much the same thing with the WWE Divas, and the situation is actually worse due to the high turn over rate. There are certainly Divas like Trish Stratus who is very famous, perhaps infamous, for having carried the Women's championship for the better part of the last decade, and who appears on Raw now and then for guest appearances. Her protege, Mikie James, has held several women's titles for WWE and TNA so is definitely amung one of the top female performers right now. Others like Christy Hemm were a flash in the pan. She briefly wrestled for WWE around 2005/2006, quit, and then went to TNA. Now, all she does is back stage interviews etc. Basically, one of those performers we could take or leave without noticing either way. As far as the name of the game goes I initially named it Superslam, but with the direction we are headed in I'm looking at calling it All Star Wrestling. The name of the federation will have the same name given the only way to merge several different federations is to do what Piledriver did and create a fantasy wrestling federation that allows you to build a roster from any real world federation, but the championships, events, and game story is specific to the fantasy federation. Hi Michael, I've already started work on something like that. As I just got done saying to Dark I am looking at renaming the game and the wrestling federation to All Star Wrestling so that there won't be any conflicts in adding performers from other promotions or brands to the game. Hi tom, well i'm not saying the wwe roster is bad, in fact i've been into wrestling for a long time now and recently am getting into guys like Cody Rhodes, Dolph Ziggler and others. I just feel that at the moment as evidenced by the rumble that its pretty thin on the ground, however with so many top guys out, its hardly surprising. I have a couple of questions though. firstly, will it be possible to make a custom move set for wrestlers to give them more of their personality such as god forbid the 5 moves of doom? lol. secondly i'm looking forward to seeing your top 100 or so, as its always good to see opinions of other wrestling fans, as i don't actually know many sadly. Is that gamePile Driver similar to Rampage Wrestling: That game to abandan ware. But has all wrestlers ever known. While its old, but one can add on to the data. And group a set of wrestlers to form a league. Making them bad or good guys. Have managers that give you instructions to do diry tricks. pitting Nick Bullwinkle vs Jesse the Body Ventura, full stuff. Tag teams of the Road Worries vs Bruser and the Crusher. Now that match up I loved to paid for. It was the tag team of Hawk and Animal , wkho were to be the next AWA Bruiser and Crusher. I got back in wrestleing Hulk defeated the Iron Shiek. But got the hell out when the WEF used Clowns as Wrestling stars. By that time WCW was very strong with wrestlers's fled the WEF, to not be exposed during the Fed crack down on juicing. That pretty much kille it for me. And seeing my favs like SuperStar Grayom needed up being crippled by the stuff. And promoters out of their minds with stunt wrestlers jumpout from the celling and splatting on the floor. But for me I loving the 2 ears of Golden times of wrestling during my time 70-90's. I can do this by visiting Youtube. Here is one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO1k4AceMU0 Even Jesse is even is political back then, having the the suits be forced to do somthing. Smiles, more Jess interviews,, pretty much the same calling the big wigs out and looking for conspiracies. And plenty of razor cutting blood smearing, action there on youtube. And a lot of head banging out there too, when the fix is not on, and the 2 guys do really hate each others guts. I am considering n Jaws scripting the game. It appears to b e more stable then its counter part Stock Car Racing game by Mink. But after all these programs were built as college projects back in the 90's. Although the INdy Car racing game is a better version of the Stock Race reply racing game, they only have seasons for Indy racing. I may go back with a different stgratigy in Jaws scripting the Stock Car game. I was dong a more direct approuch. As the game don't like the mouse and its appears using Jaws will crash the old dos game sooner or later. Must times is during a race. So, need to lock the Jaw from being used. Any ideas, let me know. Just freeze it a small area, not the answer. But, Want may work is to build a shell around the program. Then using sort of a view with the choices in the menu list box from a jaws script. There way the game in the back grouond and the menu system will hand the PC Focus in the dos game. While an operation is happening, more the mouse would be ignored. Great for opening menu selections, but the real test would be to do the same thing during a race where the game is handling over 40 cars in a 500 miles race. And b y saying in this window, the renaming of the hot key to turns Jaws cursor, could be renamed, so out of habit, one may not hit the key. And again, not the problem, the mouse port and old lang, will not allow the old game to finish. The Jaws scripts or running a program to disconnect the mouse may be the simple answer and in fact I shold try to see if any software out there can turn input and outdevices on or off. Then import that in the scripts. Jaws would not know the mouse been cut off, and would sound like it was moving around, but in fact not moving at all, until the mouse off. Well, as would it not be cool to really move the Mouse with your JAws. Chasing your cat around the house with Jaw driving your mouise remotly. With addons grabs me a beer. Actually tom, I have a question for you. If CM Punk is used in the game, would you go with the killswitch engage track this fire burns or go with Living Colour's cult of personality? personally I'd side with K S E myself, I'm a huge fan of that band. And I could also get you the entrence track from s d vs raw 2009 coz I have the game... what do you say? -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: 01 February 2012 11:58 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game Hi Ian, Well, my main reason for considering opening the database to other Federations is due primarily in part because some of the wrestlers I like have moved to the independent wrestling circuit, or have signed with a different Federation like TNA which no longer makes them WWE performers. Plus many performers choose to change their ring name, their outfit, entrance music, and adopt a totally new persona that is different from the one they previously had. For example, the performer, Lisa Marie Varon, broke into the professional wrestling business as Victoria on WWE. She became famous for her Women's title matches with Trish Stratus, Mikie James, and so on. She got such a reputation for pounding on her opponents that she got the nickname Head Bitch in Charge, and her entrance music was a wrap song, Don't Mess with Me. Since 2009 she has been wrestling for TNA Impact as a performer named Tara. Over all, I like her new persona. The new spider theme with the pet tarantula.is pretty cool. Her new heavy metal entrance theme, Broken by Goldy Locks, I like a lot better than her prior entrance music, Don't Mess with Me, because I like heavy metal, but I detest wrap music. All around I like her new persona a bit better than the classic one developed over on WWE. Other performers might not necessarily change there persona that much, but they usually undergo some sort of change. Mikie James, for example, was initially marketed on WWE as Trish Stratus's fan, kind of a ditsy school girl, and Obsession, her theme music, was a bouncy happy go lucky type entrance. When TNA got her contract they turned Mickie James into a butt kicking character. Her theme music, Hardcore Country, puts you in mind of a female gunslinger or modern cowgirl with a bad attitude. To quote Mickie herself, if anyone tries to drag me down they'll be picking themselves up off the ground, because my rhinestone boots will be kicking their butt to its roots. Lol! Enough said. Basically, if we update the performers' profiles to their modern versions it keeps the game current and can be updated as the performers change personas, music, etc rather than just sticking to one persona or period of their career. For copyright reasons I probably won't add any titles like the WWE title since that's specific to WWE but I don't see anything wrong with following TNA in having a world title, television title, women's title, and tag team titles, as those are pretty generic. If I want to be creative I suppose I could have an all star title that would be hire than the world championship. Well, only Jesse, took Steve, was to keep that image he liked, back then. Got to remember that was after Adrian car crash. But at least Steve never porked out. Smiles, better rethread on tweetter. But ok, have to bring back to gameing. My rule of thumb. The Strat-o-matic game will have downloadable games beginning around the 13th. I am planning on releaseing a lite version of the baseball scripts. While the game company is expects a test on Fed 13, trying to crash the server kind of thing. And if anybody can prove getting a lite version of the game to me they can get the Free copy of the Scripts directly from me. The liite game of Strat would only have the 2011 season. To play seasons from the past gong to need full version of the game. And proof of getting the full version of the baseball game, you will be intitle of the full version of the Jaws scripts. Any other day, the Lite version will still be available for both game types, for free. While the full version will work, but will have additional features, that I founds in so many ways,, not able to list them here. But it will be packed with things making the game an addictive game. As many of you might remember I've been working on a turn based wrestling game similar to the old Piledriver game for Dos accept my version uses a more up to date database of superstars from the WWE, including both male and female performers, as well as some sounds and music. Plus it is cross-platform and runs on both Windows and Linux operating systems. Which brings me to my question. As I am currently working on adding entrance theme music
Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
Hi Dan, Well, eventually I am considering releasing the game as open source, but other than editing the C++ code and recompiling it you really can't add custom moves etc. A lot of this is hard coded into the game itself, and in order to add the kind of customizability you are thinking about requires some sort of scripting interface. I wasn't planning on going that far with the game. However, the superstars that make it into the database will eventually have their finishers added to the game as well. Randy Orton will have his RKO DDT, Cena will be able to use the AA, CM Punk his GTS, Beth Phoenix the Glam Slam, etc. Which in most cases are just standard wrestling moves with a fancy name that reflects the performer's character. For example, the Glam Slam is just a standard gorilla press slam. Beth picks her opponent up, pumps a couple of times, and then drives her to the mat like a load of bricks. Its a pretty common wrestling move, but Beth Phoenix named it the Glam Slam since her nickname is the Glamazon. What might work better here is to simply create a menu of options of generic finishers like a DDT which is a pretty common finisher, but is known by various names. That would save me a lot of work creating custom functions for an otherwise pretty common finisher or move. Cheers! i like that idea. I kind of realised that there would be no real point to my suggestion after posting it as its only in audio or text so the only difference would be names anyway. Hi, Oh, I don't know. Goldust was never one of my favorites. Definitely not in my Fave Five as Booker T would say. I haven't finalized the roster by any means and with the possibility of opening it up to other federations etc he'd be pretty low on my list. However, if I add the custom wrestler feature you could add him yourself. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Your Thoughts Regarding my Wrestling Game
lol i cant believe booker's commontating is growing on me. must be going mad or something. He's not one of my fave 5 either, was merely thinking due to the fact that he is sort of unique. however now i come to think about it, there are a tonne of other more deserving guys to pick from. Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question, but I'm guesssing this will be a lot more balanced than piledriver? What i mean is that in that game it was practically impossible to beat a guy like andre the giant with ricky steamboat for example unless you eddited his durability down by a considerable margin due to steamboat not being able to pull off any moves. now i'm not suggesting that mystereo for example could lift the big show or anything, i'm just trying to think of more offensive moves that don't require that such as high flying ones for exxample. Hi, Um...Actually, the Bella's theme song, You Can Look but You Can't Touch, isn't wrap. I believe it would be classed as techno or dance. Big difference in genres there. As for the song itself its not really my favorite, but as it is the only theme song Nikki and Brie have ever used it only makes sense to use it as their default. Remember you can overwrite any music tracks you don't like with your own so it is a minor issue. On 2/1/12, Orin orin8...@gmail.com wrote: I think the allstar idea is a great one. Hi Ben, Yes, CM Punk is in the database already. As he is in my Fave 5 of course he would be there. Grin. As far as theme music I selected Cult of Personality by Living Colour because its not only the most current its my favorite theme song Punk has had. This Fire Burns is ok,but I've never liked Killswitch Engage myself.Although, I do have the mp3 of This Fire Burns around here somewhere. Cheers! Hi Tom. I like the idea of renaming standard moves as finishers, sinse you are absolutely right. The undertakers' tombstone for instance was a fairly standard jumping pile driver, indeed when I was younger we always referd to a pile driver as a tombstone. Beware the Grue!
