Re: [Audyssey] bowling -- the real thing

2008-03-14 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Everett,

I guess because I bowled for so many years in a league and for fun while
sighted, I can not get into the guide rail or standing at the foul line thing.
I still want to do my standard 4 step approach thing. I have done ok by
stepping away from the ball return, but what I want to try is to put something
in the right channel that beeps or makes noise for me to use as a target. I
think that with practice I could get so that I could still hit the second arrow
from the right by judging over from the thing that is making noise in the right
channel. Of course practice would be the thing.

BTW I still have the trophy that my team won mostly because I bowled so much
over average in the tournament bowl off. grin

BFN

 Jim

Ah say, son, you're about as sharp as a bowlin' ball.

Hi

1. don't take a run up, well walk up approach.

2. Take some sticky tape with you and ask someone to lay a
strip of tape so it runs about6 inches down the center of
the lane, starting at the start of the lany.

Then, at least you'll know where the exact center is and
you'll have a point of reference.

Works for me anyway.

I've noticed that that doesn't work as well for me. But a great person to
ask would be Charles Rivard. Not only did he do that stereo review of Ten
Pin Alley (anyone know whatever happened to that BTW?) but he's been a
bowler since I believe 1970. In fact it's thanks in part to him that the
physics of TPA and the rules are as accurate as they are. But I've heard
he's pretty good.

Re: [Audyssey] bowling -- the real thing

2008-03-13 Thread Gary Whittington
You could also find out at the bowling alley, if they have bowling rail.

This is normally sets at the start of the run away. The bowler can either
run their hand along the rail to steady themselfs before the slid. The rail
can also be used to cordinate the blind bowler.

If not available, the best thing is have a sight person give some info
before the match.
Where you can count off your step from side to side and your approach.
Then you can retain this info when the match starts.
The five pocket points where you want the ball to swing overduring your
release is hard enough for sight person to get
in one release. I always had a hatch in my swing so I would had to step
further to the right or left.

Finally only to get good at some thing is practice and even if you are
taking direction from some one behind you to help pick up the 7- 10 split
the helper needs practice.
Since they are have a different view point being and off the run way.
Lastly many beers don't help that perspective.

I find it's a matter of standing right.

I sort of do the splits with one foot against either gutter, and if I'm
doing the right thing, my center of gravity will be exactly down the center
of the lane, of course, my balance is pretty awful so this doesn't
always work, but someone with better physical coordination and balance could
probably do it.

Re: [Audyssey] bowling -- the real thing

2008-03-13 Thread Fun Times
Hi Everett,
I use to belong to a blind bowlers league and we used a bowling rail which
is set up on the left or right side of the alley and you use the free hand
to follow the rail down the approach and after a few tries you get a feel of
the alley. The rail is held up with two bowling balls and is out of the way
of the other bowlers. I found that larger cities bowling alleys some times
have these rails if you ask for them. I bought one for myself and it folded
up into a package about three feet long and about six inches around. My
average score was around 130, which I thought was a bit low, but we had
blind bowlers that constantly got 200 or more. Hope you continue to bowl.
Try your local bowling alley for a rail, they may be able to order one or
one of the adaptive stores should be able to get you one.

Re: [Audyssey] bowling -- the real thing

2008-03-13 Thread Tom Randall
Hi Everet.

First congrats on trying out real bowling. It can be a lot of fun. I
do not do it real often so I am therefore not all that great at it.
What I usually do is to try to line up with either the left or right
gutter and then move over a bit so that my right side is fairly
centered. I do not do a walking approach because that is almost
impossible to do without a rail which my local alleys do not seem to
have. Biggest problem is staying consistant. I've been known to throw
several strikes in a row with this method immediately followed by a
gutter ball with no discernible change in technique. I think you will
find that you get the most consistant results using a rail if you can
get your hands on one. I intend to try to get my local alley to get one
sometime.

Good luck.

Tom

Re: [Audyssey] bowling -- the real thing

2008-03-13 Thread Charles Rivard
I bowled on a weekly league of blind bowlers for about 30 years. Here's how
we did it in Phoenix, Arizona, and a lot of blind bowlers do it this way.
An Aluminum guide rail, about waist high, is placed along the same board at
both ends. It is lined up with the center of the left-hand gutter for a
right handed bowler, or along the right gutter for a left handed bowler. It
is held in place with 2 bowling balls at each end which fit into holders for
this purpose. Rubber feet on the bottom of each end prevent any marking up
of the approach. The rail is either 12 or 15 feet in length, depending on
how many lengths of aluminum tubing are used, and is set to that the far end
is about 18 inches behind the fowl line. The bowler gauges the distance
from the rail he or she must stand in order to roll a strike or convert a
spare. A sighted person tells the blind bowler which pins remain after the
first ball is rolled so that the bowler knows where to bowl the next ball.
It takes lots of patience and practice, but bowling is a great game. My
league average was 110 when I left the league due to my work schedule. Just
bowling for fun with friends, I have bowled 2 games of 201, and they were
within 6 weeks of one another. As far as the bowling rails are concerned, I
don't know, off hand, where you can purchase them any more, although I will
say that they were pretty expensive the last time I checked. Maybe around
$60? But, yes, blind people can successfully bowl. I know from fun
experience. HTH

So I went bowling with my cousin and girlfriend a couple days ago and
loved it. Problem with that is that I made myself look like a complete
fool much of the time because I couldn't find a good technique to gage
where things were. I usually line up with the little ball dispensor thingy
and head out about eight steps, then let 'er go. Anyone got any techniques
they use to bowl in real life... that is, if anyone relaly does bowl in
real life here. This list is pretty eclectic as far as age range and

 Hi

 1. don't take a run up, well walk up approach.

 2. Take some sticky tape with you and ask someone to lay a
strip of tape so it runs about6 inches down the center of
the lane, starting at the start of the lany.

Then, at least you'll know where the exact center is and
you'll have a point of reference.

 Works for me anyway.

2008-03-13 Thread Charles Rivard
If you can pick up a 7 10 split, you're wasting your time. You should be on
the pro tour. Even they don't pick that one up very often. You can do it
from either side of the 7, or either side of the 10, but all are pretty much
impossible on a regular basis.

You could also find out at the bowling alley, if they have bowling rail.

This is normally sets at the start of the run away. The bowler can either
run their hand along the rail to steady themselfs before the slid. The
 rail
can also be used to cordinate the blind bowler.

 Hi Everett,
I use to belong to a blind bowlers league and we used a bowling rail which
is set up on the left or right side of the alley and you use the free hand
to follow the rail down the approach and after a few tries you get a feel
 of
the alley. The rail is held up with two bowling balls and is out of the
 way
of the other bowlers. I found that larger cities bowling alleys some times
have these rails if you ask for them. I bought one for myself and it
 folded
up into a package about three feet long and about six inches around. My
average score was around 130, which I thought was a bit low, but we had
blind bowlers that constantly got 200 or more. Hope you continue to bowl.
Try your local bowling alley for a rail, they may be able to order one or
one of the adaptive stores should be able to get you one.
