For example, I think 3 of the OLmen sat out last week and this week - but are expected to play. Spikes is another example of someone that has not been practicing a lot - but playing. (2) Other times - Meyer has said that he does not know if he would play someone that did not practice for 2 weeks. So Meyer is playing poker with everyone. If I was in Meyer's position - I would probably do the same thing. But as a fan - it pisses me off not knowing. I've always been a Gator news junky. I think it pushes the true fans away. As a Gator fan, I see this point. I will still follow and love the Gators even if there were a total media-blackout. That said, I am wholly unconvinced that it makes one whit of difference in the games themselves, and is more a product of coaching or administrative paranoia than any verifiable strategic advantage. I would go further and posit that, while it will not drive away committed fans - of which UF has plenty - it may affect the cultivation of the next generation. I happily paid for late-night pay- per-view heavyweight boxing championships in the 90s, having grown up watching Muhammed Ali for free on Saturday afternoons in the 70s. When all boxing went to PPV, the next generation of fans were lost, and now, so is the sport. Can anyone name the current heavyweight champion of the world? Couldn't we all have done so 20 years ago? Heck, there was a time I could have names them in order. I sense a decline in NFL interest as well. When tickets are too expensive to take your kids to the game, and a corporate mentality sucks the fun out of what should be a joyous game, it's not hard to predict the long term affects. -Zeb On Oct 6, 2009, at 9:25 PM, Cecilia wrote: From: Gatornet Admin To: gatortalk@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, October 06, 2009 6:17 PM Subject: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] Today's Gatornews from Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post Once again, Cee and I are on exactly the same page. From: gatortalk@googlegroups.com [mailto:gatort...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of John Vega Sent: Wednesday, October 07, 2009 10:52 AM To: gatortalk@googlegroups.com Subject: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] Today's Gatornews from Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post As a Gator fan, I see this point. I happily paid for late-night pay-per-view heavyweight boxing championships in the 90s, having grown up watching Muhammed Ali for free on Saturday afternoons in the 70s. -Zeb On Oct 6, 2009, at 9:25 PM, Cecilia wrote: From: Gatornet Admin mailto:gator...@comcast.net To: gatortalk@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, October 06, 2009 6:17 PM Subject: [gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] Today's Gatornews from Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post Once again, Cee and I are on exactly the same page. Meyer has stated- since Tebow's concussion -(1) some or the better players don't need to practice. If I was in Meyer's position -I would probably do the same thing. But as a fan - it pisses me off not knowing. I've always been a Gator news junky. I think it pushes the true fans away. But I guess if they are winning - they are picking up more gator fans than they are pushing away. Business is business. UT isn't exactly filling their stadium this year. They're actually advertising for season ticket sales now. They didn't sell out for UCLA. But, that being said, they pay a heck of a lot more attention to their quarterback than USC fans do. Kiffin should thank Crompton. He's taking the heat for Kiffin's lousy job of coaching him. Maybe all of the above. After Tennessee's season-opening blowout of Western Kentucky last weekend, Kiffin turned a bit smug. Consider this, then, his official introduction to the current state of Vol Ball. On a number of given Saturdays this fall, the unofficial post-game meal will be Humble Pie. Humility was served on this day at Neyland Stadium. After the Vols were throttled 19-15 by UCLA, a second-tier Pac-10 team, Kiffin looked and sounded like someone who now understands that the rebuilding of this program is going to require patience and resilience. Kiffin acknowledged he "didn't do a very good job" of handling things with quarterback Jonathan Crompton. He said it was "my fault" for putting players like wideout Gerald Jones on the field in key situations despite a lack of practice time because of injury. Kiffin needs to save some of that humility for later. The Vols play at Florida on Saturday. Be afraid. Be very afraid. From what we saw out of Tennessee on Saturday, this is a team capable of putting up only token resistance at The Swamp. The Vols' offense had four turnovers and managed just 208 yards and one touchdown against UCLA. Kiffin, who oversees the offense and calls the plays, termed the offensive performance "embarrassing." Meanwhile, I don't know if you've heard about this or not, but Florida has made Sept. 19 an orange-letter day on its calendar. Shortly after his arrival at UT, Kiffin began taking verbal jabs at Gators Coach Urban Meyer. Some of Kiffin's more colorful comments have been plastered all over the Gators' practice facility. After winning its first two games by a combined 118-9, top-ranked Florida appears ready to flex its muscles. Tennessee? Well, let's just say the Vols better be in survival mode. "I'd say they'll probably be ready for us," UT defensive tackle Dan Williams said. The UCLA game was a painful reminder that Tennessee is very much a work in progress. The opening rout of Western Kentucky was an illusion. The meltdown against the Bruins was a reality check. "We've got a long way to go," said freshman wide receiver Marsalis Teague, who was held without a reception after catching six balls against Western Kentucky. "We've got to learn from this and move on." Much work remains. The change of coaching staffs may have given a number of players fresh starts, but there still are some bad habits lingering from the 5-7 performance of last season. Kiffin said he noticed some grousing and finger-pointing when he entered the locker room after the UCLA game. He intervened. Clearly, Kiffin understands that he must change the culture of this program. "That's Coach Kiffin's job," Vols linebacker Nick Reveiz said. "He's going to point that out and correct our mistakes. I think we came together as a team." Repairing the Vols' collective psyche is one thing. Fixing UT's on-field problems is another. Let's face it: Tennessee is not going to beat teams of substance with this kind of quarterbacking from Jonathan Crompton. His numbers — 13-of-26 passing for just 93 yards, with three interceptions — were comparable to some of the low points of last season. The interceptions came on three consecutive series. On the first, he overthrew an open receiver. On the second, he locked in on a receiver and failed to see the cornerback jumping the route. On the third, he threw late and off-target. In short, Crompton reverted to last year's form. And that's not good for the Vols. Asked if his struggles reminded him of '08, Crompton said: "I don't think about last year." It remains to be seen if Crompton can pull himself out of this. If he can't, how long does Kiffin go with him? As things turned sour against UCLA, Kiffin said he never considered benching Crompton in favor of junior Nick Stephens, who started six games last season. But if things don't get better, all bets are off. And this just in: It's not going to get better against Florida. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] Today's Gatornews from Miami Herald and Palm Beach Post
Actually, Zeb, that apostrophe is misplaced and often is, even in the writing of learned folks. If you consult a writing handbook, you will find that a reference to the years 1960-1969 should be written '60s, not 60's, with the leading apostrophe there to denote the omission of the 1 and the 9. The term is not possessive, and, therefore, the apostrophe between the 0 and the s is incorrect. That being said, it is considered correct to insert an apostrophe when pluralizing a letter. It is correct to write, for example, My son got 5 A's on his report card. That is done so that the reader will not confuse the plural of A with the word As. Thank you for providing a way for me to kill 5 minutes of this endless wait for kickoff... The unique thing, to me, about Tebow is his remarkably low error percentage. His TD passes to INT ratio is off the charts good. He almost never fumbles. Turnovers kill drives and lose games. For all the stats that other passers or runners may have, they need to be tempered by the number of times that they turned the ball over. What is the average difference in field position? 45 yards - if the turnover was on 3rd down and a 1st down was not earned. If it was on 1st or 2nd, the loss is greater due to the lost offensive opportunity. -50 yards? -60 yards? If that negative yardage is factored into the stats, I'd bet that more than a few players with arguable similar stats would fall to earth in a hurry. -Zeb --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

The quotes this year seem to be a lot better this year. This quote by Carl Johnson and the other by Patchan keep me LMAO. Patchan's was something like -a reporterasked Patchan what the hardest part of playing on the OL versus the DL was. Patchan replied - "Coach Addazzio spitting on you during meetings". Original Message The Gators had a scorcher of a practice on Tuesday, with temperatures of 85 degrees and 82 percent humidity helping make Meyer’s rigorous practices even more challenging. “God turned the heat up on us today. Wow, that was a tough one,” said Meyer, dripping with sweat. “The objective of our camp, you have to feel really lousy before you can feel good, and we’re at the point where everyone is feeling real lousy — which is good.” Quote of the day “I seen the devil out there today. He was wearing a white hat.” – Carl Johnson, on how hot it was at practice. I never asked for transparency. The fences around the practice fields are covered with opaque green fabric to a height of about 12 feet. You live close, please check, I may be wrong about the height but am pretty sure that the opacity and color are accurate. I think that you'd have to rent a helicopter to get a good view of our practices once the guarded gate is closed. If the current measures at the practice field are inadequate, I'd be interested in knowing the manner and how much it would cost to correct those inadequacies. That seems more sensible than abandoning practice fields that were built for the purpose of, well, practicing. -Zeb On Aug 10, 2009, at 12:51 PM, Arthur Polhill wrote: After the 4th MNC and the 3rd MNC in the last 4 years, I'll ask you how you feel about public transparency. This is our training camp where we want to get the team away for the next two weeks, prior to beginning game prep week for the beginning of the regular season. Other coaches in the past would take the team to Ocala for the two weeks of two a days. I don't have a problem with what Coach Meyer is doing. The Utes were ranked No. 5 in the season-ending computer poll, but just No. 7 in both the Harris and USA Today coaches polls. “One of the Harris pollsters last year said, ‘Well I never saw Utah play,’” said *Craig Thompson*, commissioner of the Mountain West Conference. “They were on TV 11 times. National DirecTV satellite. Versus is on in 75 million homes. CBS college is on in 33 million homes. That’s not a very concerted effort to do your job. They’re easily found.” I caught up with Thompson on Friday for a story on the SEC’s television deal with ESPNhttp://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/sports/epaper/2009/08/01/a1c_sec_0802.html, and how the rich are getting richer in college sports. His conference opted to sign with Comcast/Versus and CBS College Sports three years ago, because the only way MWC teams could get on ESPN was by playing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. The MWC’s television contracts pay each team about $1.4 million per year, while SEC schools will now get $16 million per year, $11 million of which comes directly from ESPN. In our conversation, Thompson said he would like to see the Harris and Coaches polls removed from the BCS equation, because they amount to little more than opinion polls, he said. And most of the voters only know about college football what they see on ESPN at the end of their Saturday night. The Harris, Coaches and Computer polls each count for 1/3rd of the overall BCS equation. “I’ve never been a great fan of the opinion polls. That’s all they are,” Thompson said. “Just the *Tim Tebow* story from last week is the perfect examplehttp://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/gatorbytes/2009/07/24/spurrier-didnt-vote-for-tebow-changes-his-vote-takes-full-blame-and-apologizes/. Coaches aren’t filling those (ballots) out, and those that do, aren’t they kind of busy on Saturdays?” “I’ve always been a proponent of the computer polls,” Thompson added. “They just look at statistics. The Utes were ranked No. 5 in the season-ending computer poll, but just No. 7 in both the Harris and USA Today coaches polls. “One of the Harris pollsters last year said, ‘Well I never saw Utah play,’” said Craig Thompson, commissioner of the Mountain West Conference. “They were on TV 11 times. National DirecTV satellite. Versus is on in 75 million homes. CBS college is on in 33 million homes. That’s not a very concerted effort to do your job. They’re easily found.” I caught up with Thompson on Friday for a story on the SEC’s television deal with ESPN, and how the rich are getting richer in college sports. “Just the Tim Tebow story from last week is the perfect example. Coaches aren’t filling those (ballots) out, and those that do, aren’t they kind of busy on Saturdays?” “I’ve always been a proponent of the computer polls,” Thompson added. “They just look at statistics. At least it’s a little more performance based than a human being that’s saying, ‘Well gee, I saw nine of their games….’” __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4300 (20090803) __ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

How so? Let's count the ways: 1. Phil's BCS champion: Florida (for the second year in a row) 2. They are the most experienced defending National Champ in a long time and not only are they the only team in the country that ranks in all 8 of my individual units but they are in the top 10 in all 8 and in the top 2 in SIX of the eight! For the 2nd straight year I will pick Florida but this time they figure to be the preseason #1 team by almost everyone (unlike '08). 3. BCS championship matchup, January 7, Pasadena, Calif.: Florida vs. Texas (for the record, I agree on both teams) 4. Phil's preseason First Team All-Americans: Tim Tebow, Carlos Dunlap, Brandon Spikes, Joe Haden, Brandon James (kick return). 5. According to Steele, Florida has the: Best quarterback duo in the country; second-best offensive line in the country (behind USC), second-best defensive line in the country (behind Oklahoma); second-best linebacking corps (behind Penn State); second-best defensive backfield in the country (behind USC); and second-best special teams unit in the country (behind Boise State). 6. Steele ranks the SEC as the nation's toughest conference for 2009, followed by Big 12, Pac-10, Big Ten, ACC, Big East and Mountain West. 7. Number of Gators named to First, Second, Third or Fourth-Team All-SEC: 15 8. This year's squad has 18 returning starters and is the best that Meyer has put on the field. Despite the fact that their SEC schedule is tougher with just three SEC games in The Swamp, all 9 sets of my power rankings call for an unbeaten season and the Gators may have the best offense, defense and special teams in the country. 9. The No. 2-ranked freshman receiver in the country? Andre Debose. 10. The No. 1-ranked freshman offensive lineman in the entire country? Xavier Nixon. Nick Alajajian is No. 11. 11. The No. 2-ranked freshman linebacker? Jelani Jenkins. Jon Bostic is No. 14. 12. Steele ranked Florida's 2009 recruiting class as the sixth-best in the nation (but fourth in the SEC). 13. Steele has Dunlap and Spikes as top-10 NFL draft picks in 2010. He has Tebow as the 14th-best draft-eligible player, with Haden at 26. 14. Steele projects Florida to be No. 1 in the nation in rush defense, pass defense, points against and total defense in 2009. 15. Finally, Steele predicts Tebow will win the Heisman Trophy. Tebow got my vote last year and while he had the most 1st place votes and outplayed the Heisman winner Sam Bradford in the bowl, he was just #3 in the voting. He put the Gators on his shoulders after the loss to Ole Miss and if the vote was done after the bowls he would have clearly won. Archie Griffin (the only two time winner) should get ready for some company. __ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 4177 (20090622) __ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~--- inline: image001.gif

The reduction would all but hand the all-time record to Penn State's Joe Paterno, whose 383 wins led Bowden by one entering this coming season. With Bowden turning 80 in November and planning to coach only one more year or two more at most, vacating 14 wins is a death penalty to his dream of the record -- something he has worked toward since his first head-coaching job in 1949 at Howard, and the past 33 years leading the Seminoles. ''Joe would not want to win this thing the way [the NCAA is] doing it,'' Bowden said Friday -- and he's right. Paterno, even with history to gain, has said it would be a shame if the penalties included victories stripped from Bowden. Baseball's hallowed home run records are stained by steroids and now one of college football's biggest records will be stained, too, and needing an asterisk -- only this time through no fault of the potential record-setter. BOWDEN IN THE DARK Bowden had no idea that for a couple of semesters in 2006-07 a tutor and two low-ranking academic staff members took it upon themselves to feed students answers to an online music-history test. Sixty-one students in 10 sports were involved. FSU discovered the wrongdoing itself -- a renegade misconduct not orchestrated by any coach -- and quickly turned itself in, cooperating with the NCAA probe and, in Bowden's case, even voluntarily suspending the involved players from the 2007 Music City Bowl and the first three games of the 2008 season. So much for FSU's forthrightness in coming forward mitigating in its favor with the NCAA. The governing body could have and should have simply reduced scholarships for the involved sports and placed each on probation. Instead, in addition, there is the retroactive stripping of victories -- even though no evidence exists that A) Any players would have failed that test and been ineligible if not given answers, or B) That FSU would not have won those games had those mostly marginal players not participated. ''The committee is just wrong,'' retiring FSU president T.K. Wetherell said. It jars the mind to think that small-scale shenanigans involving a single online music-history course would ruin what Bowden has worked a lifetime to achieve. Some tutor whispers ''Beethoven'' in a backup left guard's ear and college football history is altered? That's dumb, and unnecessary. That's over the top, and an abuse of power by the NCAA. If the omnipotent ruling body wants to get tougher it could increase the scholarship reductions, extend the probation or any number of other measures, but why involve vacating wins when so few players were involved and when no coaches or athletic-department officials were? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~--- inline: image001.jpg

FSU has been in the sports pages lately because of all the arrests and illegal stuff they have been doing. Everyone writes about all the football and basketball problems at USC. Everyone writes about how the Big 10 and Big 12 can't compete with the SEC. How can reporting a string of violations to the NCAA and SEC be good? It sounds like lack of institutional control to me How can anyone think that all the negative publicity is good? Starting to think that Raiders owner Al Davis was right all along ... Tennessee AD: Lane Kiffin’s promotion of Vols has been ‘quite amazing’ by Ben Volin Lane Kiffin has ticked off about half the coaches in the SEC, committed several secondary recruiting violations and took a cheap shot at the people of Pahokee in his first six months as head football coach at Tennessee. Call him “Lame Kiffin” all you want, but athletic director Mike Hamilton is loving every minute of it. “When you think about the fact that our football program was 5-7 last year, and we’ve got a coach that’s not coached a game yet in college football, but yet, we’re on the front page of USA Today sports (Tuesday) … it’s really quite amazing,” Hamilton told the Associated Press this week. “Now, we prefer that attention to always be positive, but sometimes you take the good with the bad in that regard. I feel like for the most part it’s been good.” Kiffin seemingly can’t help but get himself in trouble. The latest episode came this week, when the Vols self-reported a secondary recruiting violation. The message “I was so excited to hear that J.C. Copeland committed to play for the Vols today!” appeared on Kiffin’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and the blame was placed on an overzealous staffer who didn’t know recruiting rules. Kiffin’s mouth has gotten him in trouble a few times, but it’s a small price to pay for turning that program around. “Everybody says, ‘Does he really understand what he’s doing or saying?’ Yeah, he does,” said Hamilton. “I have found him to be different from the media persona that was painted of him, stemming from those original February comments. He’s not as cavalier as the media painted him to be.” And you’ll notice that Kiffin has mostly kept his mouth shut since making national news in February with his comments about Pahokee and Nu’Keese Richardson. Since then, Kiffin called The Post to offer an interview/apology. Then when the situation turned ugly again this month — the Pahokee principal demanded that Tennessee/Kiffin make an apology in person — Kiffin sent running backs coach Eddie Gran to town this week to smooth things over. If you haven’t seen it, the Pahokee-Tennessee rift has been resolved. “They’ve done everything they need to do. They’re allowed at practice and everything is hopefully back to normal,” Pahokee coach Blaze Thompson said. “I’m very happy. I’m glad the issue is resolved and we don’t have to concern ourselves with who can and can’t come to our practices and recruit our players.” The Vols may still get killed on the scoreboard this season, but the attention has certainly helped with recruiting. Rivals.com ranked Kiffin’s 2009 recruiting class No. 10 in the nation, one spot ahead of Florida. Kiffin also landed Bryce Brown, the nation’s supposed No. 1 recruit. Hamilton said he is a little surprised with the amount of attention Kiffin’s comments have garnered. “Have you heard some of the things our basketball coach has said?” he joked, referring to Bruce Pearl. “Some of the things Bruce says sometimes are much more cavalier, but because the attention Lane garnered early on for some reason the media seems to be more focused on that. And that’s OK.” --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---

"You can't talk because everything you say, there's no off the record," Meyer said. "You can't have fun. You can't talk. You just have to be very generic. And that's a shame, but that's the way it is." "I watch what I'm saying now. HEY . Same is true around here !!! From now on - I'm going to watch what I say and be very generic ... That sure was a swell speech given by coach! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ GATORS: ONE VOICE ON SATURDAY - NO VOICE ON SUNDAY! 1996 National Football Champions | 2006 National Basketball Champions 2006 National Football Champions | 2007 National Basketball Champions 2008 National Football Champions | Three Heisman Trophy winners: Steve Spurrier (1966), Danny Wuerffel (1996), Tim Tebow (2007) - Visit our website at www.gatornet.us -~--~~~~--~~--~--~---
