I don't know if I would necessary agree with 'don't put on the Perishable'
advice. All my
boxes have Perishable on them and I've had a 100% live arrival on all my
shipments. I go back to temperature problems during the mid of night at
shipping hubs (or other problems). As Chris says, shipping companies like
UPS typically do
not have temperature controlled areas for Perishable items.

That's cool... After my friend worked with UPS to try to figure out what had
happened, that was their best guess as to what it might have been. She had
shipped geckos before and had no problems. I was just passing along
something that I thought might be a legitimate warning. At any rate,
especially during the winter, I don't know that a lable of perishable would
help. They don't typically put perishable foods in a warmer location at any
rate, I wouldn't guess.

[gecko]Re: (gecko) UPS Shipping Practices

2004-03-28 Thread CHRIS SCHWEITZER
Hi Melody,

I work for UPS, here's the rundown on how the system works:

Your Next Day Air will go straight to PDX airport, where it will be loaded
into a container with all the other eastbound Next Day Airs and fly directly
to Louisville, KY (westbound packages go to Ontario, CA). It gets unloaded,
sorted, then reloaded into a new container for the airport nearest the final
destination. At that airport, the entire container is put on a truck and
moved to the destination hub, where it is unloaded, sorted, and sent out for
delivery. So a typical NDA is sorted a total of two or three times before
being loaded on the delivery truck. Packages containing live animals are
not handled separately from the rest, your best bet is to put it in a flat
box as opposed to a cube-shaped box so it doesn't get turned over as much.
Heat will have to come from heat packs, and unless the box you use is
airtight, ventilation shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sorry you couldn't get a better answer to your question from UPS.
Unfortunately, the people you call on the phone via the 1-800 number are not
necessarily familiar with all the ins and outs of package routing (I'm not
positive they are even UPS employees at all). You would be hard pressed to
find someone to talk to who could tell you the exact route a package would
take to a specific destination...I'm a delivery driver, and I know neither
my supervisor nor manager could without calling someone in Louisville first.
You might try calling your Account Executive and seeing if they can find the
info for you, but don't expect instant response, LOL.

Hope this info is helpful, I check this list every day so if you have any
other questions just ask!

Hi Chris,

Thanks so much! I could not imagine that the packages did not get
sorted somewhere! I thought the use of centralized hubs was a large part
of what makes UPS efficient! I probably spent half an hour on the phone
with UPS, and they did tell me lots of stuff, just irrelevant and not
answering my question.

Your info also corresponds with what Julie said. However, she did say
that Rockford IL is the hub for N and NE areas -- is this no longer true?

Thanks,
Melody

Hi Chris, I have had my shipments to Illinois and surrounding states go
directly to Rockford, IL from Ontario, California. This is important to
know as this hub gets VERY cold in the winter. Anything going to the
northeast may go there or through Louisville. I had a rep tell me once
it depends on the loads the planes are carrying. The southern states
always have my geckos going through Louisville. Another important thing
to know about these two hubs is that the geckos will sit there usually
about 2 hours between 1am and 3am, a very cold time of the night.
Louisville is usually not a problem temp-wise. I know all this because I
save my tracking from each order and print it out if it is a new place I
am shipping to, or the route to that area was not typical.

Indeed! I have had luck asking questions through my UPS rep. - when she
was not available I had decent luck with the phone folks if I asked them
to ask their supervisor.

My rep was pretty good, I have had a new one for a couple months and
have not heard from her.

Is there anything I could put on the box that would keep the drivers
from treating my boxes like footballs? So far I have not had much luck
with pre-printed red up arrows and Perishable on all four sides, LIVE
circled in red, and THIS SIDE UP on the top of the box My boxes are
15x7x11 and are white in background color. Thanks for any tips!

Just FYI, a friend of mine shipped a leopard gecko that died in shipping.
They tracked the problem back to the fact that she had written PERISHABLE on
all sides. It seems that although fragile is a good lable to put on,
perishable is not. Because perishable goods are typically those that have
to be refirgerated, her gecko was stored in a much cooler area than a normal
package would have been, and her heat pack couldn't keep up with the ambient
temp. Just a word of warning... we've learned not to use the lable
perishable on live animal packages.

Hi Rick,

Rick Gale wrote:

That is really the exception in our biz - I have been shipping with UPS
since fall '01 and only have broken tails at worst. Before then I used
Postal (for about three years) and Airborne (since I started out in
1993), that was the same. I did have one calamity with Delta shipping
leos. This is shipping a couple thousand (guess), mostly one and two
at a time.

They tracked the problem back to the fact that she had written
PERISHABLE on all sides.

Wow! Using what shipper? What else was written on the box? Was the heat
pack warm when the gecko arrived? I'd say this is a good guess about
what happened, however, shipping is a complex process and anything from
packing to being at the wrong temps, to the sensitivity of the gecko
(age, health, genus) and/or getting bounced around too much is just one
factor out of many.

It seems that although fragile is a good lable to put on, perishable is
not. Because perishable goods are typically those that have to be
refirgerated, her gecko was stored in a much cooler area than a normal
package would have been, and her heat pack couldn't keep up with the
ambient temp.

Perishable is pre-printed on my boxes, has been since I started. I have
written on there right below in large black ink No Extreme Temps -
maybe that is the difference. I also write LIVE all over the box on
all visible sides, in large black letters circled in red.

Just a word of warning... we've learned not to use the lable
perishable on live animal packages.

So far I think LIVE and American Flags are winners, along with No
Extreme temps! I think some folks who are afraid to write what is on the
box not using shippers who ship reptiles probably have a lot worse luck.
Since I am an authorized UPS lizard shipper, I put the contents of the
box on top as well, both common and scientific names and Live harmless
lizards right underneath that. I would recommend using UPS or Postal
if you are not authorized so you can write this info on the top of the
box. Writing the scientific names fo reptiles on the box is required by
the Lacy Act.
