I've printed a scaled-up copy of The Jakarta Project logo, and am hoping to
tape it up, or make it otherwise visible, somewhere in the bar, so that we
can find each other.

Alternatively, Dirk's Lego project idea might help, although it's been a

I'm not a attendee but I have a suggestion:

1)First and foremost, let's meet each other!
25th Mar. 12:00 PM in front of Room 102.
Someone must have a mark, for example a printed out page
  of Jakarta home.

2)Discuss about the restaurant where to take dinner after meeting.

Regards.

Soapy Bear is horrid- they clean their tubes badly, use too much detergent
when they do, and as a result you get old yeast and other crap. Always a
headache the next day. I'd also be against the Irish place - too noisy to
talk :-) Other near by ones which are good to OK IMHO, have good beer and
good food are and are quiet enough to talk:

Rickenbacher bar; 2nd and mission
21st Amendment; 2nd 2 blocks down.

though. The cuisine is Spanish, and the prices look reasonable (for San
Francisco). It looks like the bar is quite big, from the photo on the web
site. The JBoss people have reserved a room there on Tuesday and Wednesday,
although their party is elsewhere. Again, I haven't been there personally,
but it seems promising.

RE: JakartaOne: The Gathering

2002-03-22 Thread Marc Saegesser

Tuesday works better for me, but I can find time on any evening (there is
beer involved, after all). Wednesday evening will conflict with the Struts
and Servlet BOFs so that might impact attendance.

Thirsty Bear, http://www.thirstybear.com, looks good based on their web
site, but I've never been there. Any comment from locals?

Re: JakartaOne: The Gathering

2002-03-22 Thread Geir Magnusson Jr.

There are people starting to travel (they are already traveling...) so lets
decide.

Jon, can you suggest a place that isn't too far away from Moscone that has a
large bar (with real beer...) we can gather in, with a reasonably-priced
restaurant that we can then have dinner in? Cuisine can be anything, but a
'normal' american upscale bar menu might be the most appealing to the
majority.

How about Monday or Wed night? How about the Thirsty Bear? I don't know
anything about the place - isn't that where the Jboss people are holding
court?

Re: JakartaOne to be Cancelled ...

2002-03-16 Thread Vic Cekvenich

Just in case...let me repeat an offer:
I am teaching a commercial Struts class on the 28th AM. At 11AM it will
be over (any Jakarta comitter could come for free or/and I could do a
quick thing Struts presentation for Jakarta)
I have paid for the room for the duration of the day and will have a
large projector so this is free to Jakarta, (the room and projector for
a few hours.
There will be at 20 Struts people, and by posting to a few Jakarta
groups, you would get more people. So I am willing to help promote it
(see news.basebeans.com or baseBeans.com/news.jsp) somehow. Not looking
for anything back.

Otherwise, I would like to meet a few of you in a resturant/bar.

No trouble - but take some simple steps: get your PMC to bless this event
- if they are sensbible then they'll propably impose a $ cap on it - and
make sure you keep the receipts. This is why the ASF has money in the
bank.

No problem.

We can ask the foundation to sponsor this stuff... Shouldn't be much $$$ and
IMO it would be a good cause...

Additional idea just sent to me :

Anyone who is with a vendor that will be on the show floor, would you be
willing to keep flyers at your booth Monday and Tuesday? Let me know so we
can get a count if we are going to produce, or if you are willing, we can
have the copy ready early so you can make your own pile with your own
equipment and resources :)

We (as in: the two-man-shop which is our little 'company') are seriously
considering hosting a techy one-day seminar/conference for Apache-minded
people, mostly gathering committers & users of Jakarta & XML projects
and get them to explain what they do (and why).

Location would be in Belgium, near Ghent. A date has not been fixed yet,
but it would be immediately before or after the summer. Because of our
operational size, we would charge a minimal entrance fee to cover
expenses (food, location, etc), unless we find sponsors.

People (seriously) interested to help us organizing the event are
invited to get in touch with us.

Heck from the East Coast US right now its cheaper to fly/stay in Europe
than the west coast (go figure). For kicks I investigated hotel prices
in the area WHOA! For about 2-$300 right now I can get to Munich
(highly suggest for a get together). Hotels in Munich in the off season
drop to like 110 marks ($50) a night to stay in the thick of things
(with bathroom and shower), Europe is a wonderful place to spend dollars
(especially when the currency sinks!). The only nasty thing is that
there 7-10 hour flight! Of course if one inebriates himself
sufficiently until one is numb the whole flight then one can just sleep
through the whole unpleasant thing.

Anyhow, I think they should hold the ApacheCon in New York this year.
Just my opinion. I'd go to a Jakarta One but it'd have needed to been
planned out farther ahead for me to judge whether it was worth flying
out for or not. I'm not really that interested in going to JavaOne for
a few grand. (not on my dime at least)

Hypothetically of course. It would certainly make for interesting press..

StudioZ (was: Re: JakartaOne?)

2002-03-04 Thread Jon Scott Stevens

I would love to host JakartaOne at Studio Z. I think it would be a lot of
fun.

For free. *

However, I do need to know the day/time/length of the event as well as what
other things will be needed (chairs/tables/whatever). Unless some people
here volunteers, I can look into getting some great local
techno/house/trance/ambient DJ's to spin music.

We do have a DSL line into the space as well as ethernet drops literally
every five feet (the space was a .bomb before we moved in) and I will have
an open 802.11b network available in the next week or so (as soon as the
Linksys is delivered). Bring your laptops. :-)

Studio Z is not walking distance from Moscone, however, it is only about a 5
minute, $4-5 taxi ride. Not a big deal.

* The only requirement is that the date/times not conflict with any other
events that we are putting on there.

The Covalent deal also sounds cool, but I doubt they have a large dance
floor and a big sound system. :-)

Just let me know the details...

I would be happy to sponsor a hotel conference room, ie. FREE room,
screen and projector on the 28th, say noon - end of day. (I have paid
for an extra room)

I am holding a paid Struts class AM on the same day.

Let me know if/how I can assist more.
Feel free to fill up the agenda, I could do a FREE 30 minute version of
Struts if needed.

I'll be out there for JavaOne and I'd love to get together with other
Jakarta folks. I haven't worked out my whole schedule yet, but I'm not sure
how much time I'd have for an 'off-site convnention' (as cool as that
sounds).

I was thinking about this earlier in feb, but wasn't sure we had the time...

I wanted to call it 'OpenOne' (but 'JakartaOne' is nice...) and use a space
like Jon's where we could have both a social gathering as well as some short
technical talks on things that didn't make it into JavaOne (for example, if
it didn't have anything to do with XML or web services).

Here's what I had so far as a draft :

I would like to get a sense of community interest for the following idea

Proposal

Hold an off-site convention during the week of JavaOne to provide a venue
for topics that didn't make the cut for JavaOne as well as topics that did,
of course. Examples include (imagination challenged right now...)

 o bastard J2EE technologies
   - template engines (could you guess I would suggest this ?)
   - publishing frameworks (Cocoon et al)
   - web app frameworks (Turbine, Maverick, Struts)
   - ?

 o mainstream technologies
   - web services (I want to hear Sam talk about Axis :)
   - XML-RPC
   - ?

 o community discussions
   - JSPA issues
   - ?

 o other stuff
   - how about JDD talking about Objective C
   - Gump sociology
   - Maven

Rationale
-

There are a lot of interesting things in the world that Sun's marketing crew
doesn't have space or interest for at JavaOne. Many of these things are in
daily production use by people, and it would be nice to hear about them.

Many developers will be in the area for this week, and if we could find a
way to bring us together for both social interaction as well as learning
about some of the topics we work on and are interested in, it seems like a
win all around.

Thoughts

We have an in with an event space in San Francisco (hey, Jon!) and from what
I understand, it has two distinct spaces, one of which can serve alcohol.
So we can divide, cleanly, the social space and the technical space. Those
in the social space can bring their own, I guess :)

However, I think if we do this, we should pay for the space (unless
studio.tv wants the publicity :), and there lies a conflict of interest
problem, but I assume that if the rate is competitive, as I am sure it will
be, we can all look the other way.

I don't know if we have the time to pull it off - it would be nice to put
something non-lame together. I think we shouldn't be aggressive about this
- find a spot in the schedule so people aren't torn between J1 and this...
