You are not yet finished preparing the mask. Parts of the white
background of the neo layer are not being masked out properly. Did you
apply the blur to the layer mask? To me it looks as if a larger blur
radius could help. After blurring the mask, you can use the Levels
tool to finetune the selection.

[Gimp-user] A nice toy

2003-06-10 Thread johnny

Gimp is a nice toy to play with. As a former Photoshop user, I still have 3 questions
bugging me:
 1. Let's say I have this image I need to rotate precisely by 2.5 degrees CCW. How I
am supposed to do this simple task in Gimp?
 2. I still didn't figure out how to quickly create my own patterns (this is a simple
procedure in Photoshop).
 3. A Distort tool seems to be missing in Gimp. Correct me if I am wrong.
Running Gimp 1.2.3 on a Mandrake Linux box.

 1. Let's say I have this image I need to rotate precisely by 2.5
degrees CCW. How I am supposed to do this simple task in Gimp?

Use the transform tool and set its options to rotation, traditional.
Click on the image to initiate a transfrom then type -2.5 into the Angle
field of the Rotation Information dialog before clicking Rotate.

  2. I still didn't figure out how to quickly create my own patterns
(this is a simple procedure in Photoshop).

Save any image you wish to use into your patterns folder with the
extension .pat. Open the pattern chooser and click Refresh to load the
pattern you have just saved.

 3. A Distort tool seems to be missing in Gimp. Correct me if I am
wrong. Running Gimp 1.2.3 on a Mandrake Linux box.

Take a look at the Filters|Distorts menu, perhaps it contains what you
are looking for.

The answer is simple. Use the Transform Tool from the toolbox.

  2. I still didn't figure out how to quickly create my own patterns (this is a

It is a simple procedure in GIMP as well.

Patterns are saved with the .pat extension. To make the pattern
available from within gimp-1.2 you should save it to one of the pattern
directories (e.g. ~/.gimp-1.2/patterns/ on GNU/Linux)

  3. A Distort tool seems to be missing in Gimp. Correct me if I am wrong.

Did you check the Image/Filters/Distorts/ menu? Not exactly a tool,
but I am not sure what it is exactly you are looking for here...

You better not use Alt for shortcuts since the Alt key is used for

Mnemonics is how GTK+ calls keyboard accelerators for widgets which
are indicated by an underlined character. We are making heavy use of
them in latest versions of The GIMP.

What's up with the GIMP Contest site:

It looks like it's been dormant since 1999.

If you want contests, maybe it's a nice idea to join some of the many
contest sites that are not GIMP specific and state at your submissions
that they are GIMPed. If you do that it could help the publicity of
GIMP more than posting submissions to a site that no Photoshopper
would visit.

Of course that's only for posting results, not script-fu, brushes or
something like that. But hey, it's better than nothing, and I think
the cross platform contest could add a little fun to the whole thing.

A good starting point for funny and completely senseless contests is
the contest section at B3TA:

http://www.b3ta.com/

BTW, I love that site anyway. :-)

I think you might be looking for the Interactive Warp tool.

Filters Distorts IWarp

The interface is not what you are used to but you'll find it quite capable
once you learn how it works.

I see. That thought actually passed through my little brain, but I wasn't
sure. Thanks for explaining that.

I hope you didn't take offense about the 'Willis' bit. That's from a dumb
US TV show from the 70s (Family Ties).

Haven't compiled 1.3.15 yet, but everything is looking unbelievably
awesome so far. Hope you pump out another O'Reilly book when you reach
1.4!

Thank you all. Btw I loved the Iwarp distort thing. Also Transform - Perspective is
indeed very similar to the Free Transform Photoshop tool.
Migrating from Photoshop to Gimp will be less painfull than I thought :-)
