You need antialiasing. Use explicit settings on the command line,

I browsed the web and noticed they come in different sizes.
 Is size important and why?

Size is important since it determines how accurately you can draw. And
beware! The size of the tablet is misleading, it is the size of the
active area that matters. For example, the Intuos 4M is 370 mm x 254 mm
but the active area is about 1/4th of this size.

For amateur use, I'd say go for an active area of size A6. For
semi-professional use an active area size A5 or even A4 may be better.

I've worked with an early Intuos (active area A6) and loved it.
Unfortunaltely it is no longer supported by my operating system.

With all respect, if you take your business serously, and expect your

While drawing something logo-like is easy at first, designing a good

No, it is just like the GIMP: it reads (hence decompresses) the image

[Gimp-user] 2.6.4 crashes on PDF import

2009-01-03 Thread Johan Vromans
Hi,

I get crashes with 2.6.4 when trying to import a page from a PDF
document. This happens on Fedora 10 and 8. It doesn't happen with
2.6.3.

As a start, I noticed a different PDF import dialog[1]. 2.6.3 shows
thumbnails of all PDF pages, 2.6.4 shows a simple dialog where to
enter the resolution and the page number. When I do this, I get the
following error:

  Calling error for procedure 'gimp-image-undo-enable':
Procedure 'gimp-image-undo-enable' has been called with an invalid
ID for argument 'image'. Most likely a plug-in is trying to work on
an image that doesn't exist any longer.

Opening '/home/jv/tmp/week01.pdf' failed: PDF document plug-In could
  not open image

Any hints where to start looking?

-- Johan

[1] Note that this could be caused by a change in build spec. For
2.6.3 I used the Fedora 8 build spec, for 2.6.4 I used the Fedora 10
build spec.

[Gimp-user] Billboards

2008-12-06 Thread Johan Vromans
Hi,

You probably know http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/billboard.php .

It should be fairly easy to create billboards like this with GIMP.

Bottom layer: an arbitrary background.

Top layer: the billboard itself, with empty (transparent) contents.

Then the billboard image, cropped to the right size, can be inserted
between these layers and voila!

The crucial part is the image of the billboard.

Has anyone already done this, and wants to share?

The latest Gimp from Fedora 9 updates is 2.4.7.
It's About box shows 2.4.7.
gimp --version shows 2.4.7.

The latest gimp-help from Fedora 9 is 2.4.1.
Gimp 'About' still shows 2.4.7, even when this gimp-help is installed.

Advice: upgrade to Gimp 2.6. It's much nicer...

[Gimp-user] Changing events

2008-10-19 Thread Johan Vromans
Hi,

I have a couple of databases where I entered the date that people were
christened instead of date of birth, the latter being unknown.
However, The Narrative Web Report seems to use the event Baptism
instead of Christening.

Is there an easy way to change Christening to Baptism for all entries
in the database?

I tried to export GRAMPS XML, issue a search/replace on the text and
then re-import the XML. This seems to work but can I be sure no
information gets lost this way?

[Gimp-user] Redo paints after creating a new layer

2008-06-10 Thread Johan Vromans
Hi,

When on vacation I often do this:

- import an image of a map (download, digital photo)
- enhance it until satisfactory
- create a new layer
- place a series of dots denoting a route

I often discover after placing a whole lot of dots that I forgot to
create the new layer first. Using undo, I go back to the pristine
state. I can then redo the history to get the dots back. However, I
cannot redo the paints anymore after creating a layer.

Is there a way to accomplish this?

Yes! In fact, when I first started to work with layers I'd expected

Being an old Unix hacker, I'd go for a way to have Gimp dump the
