[Gimp-user] Trouble with Open Image box

2006-04-04 Thread Judy Wilson

I get an error when I try to add a Bookmark to the left window on the
Open Image window. It says Error Could not make a bookmarkBookmark
saving failed: Could not change file mode: waitpid() failed: No child
processes

Somehow it worked randomly a couple of times, then I couldn't remove it.
I'm using Gimp 2.2 on Kubuntu 5.10. I'm not a geek, but my husband is a
Linux geek, and he couldn't figure it out. Thanks in advance.

[Gimp-user] Re: (Gimp-user) Help needed for highlights

2005-10-04 Thread Judy Wilson

I do this with the clone tool at a transparency setting that I have to
experiment with to get the effect I want. Just clone a part of the face
close by. Also I experiment with the
size of the brush. Takes a little practice, but I have good luck with it.

[Gimp-user] Editing gradients

2005-01-13 Thread Judy Wilson
I want to edit a couple of gradients and I am unable to make the
gradient editor work. I click on a gradient and I get the edit gradient
dialog, but I am not able to do anything else. I right and left click on
the segments and it seems that they are frozen. What am I doing wrong? I
have googled for help and find some instructions, but they don't seem to
work. I'm using Gimp 2.0 on Mepis. Thanks for any help!

[Gimp-user] Questions about 2.0

2004-06-05 Thread Judy Wilson
I have a couple of questions about differences in 2.0

1. When selecting a layer in the layer dialog, the bar is blue. But
the blue bar disappers in the layer dialog when you make the image
active again. What in the layer dialog then indicates the active
layer? Or do I just know because of the border in the image?

2.When adding guidelines, they cannot be moved by using the move tool
and having it change to a hand. Any way to move them?

I have looked at the manual, and can't find these answers. Not
complaining, I really appreciate all the work done on the Gimp by
volunteers!!

[Gimp-user] Info on Gimp 2.0

2004-05-06 Thread Judy Wilson
I get information about Gimp 2.0 on the list, but I'm a user without a
lot of advanced skills. I don't understand a lot of what does on on
the list. What I am wondering is if there is somewhere to find changes
that I may need to know. For example, when trying to paste something
into a layer mask, when I go back to the image window, then nothing is
selected in the Layers window, and I can't paste into it. I re-tried
it with the previous version just to make sure, and it worked there.

I would happy to try and find information myself if I just know where
to go.

Thank you.

[Gimp-user] maintain anit-aliasing with a fill

2003-06-07 Thread Judy Wilson
I need to be able to take text with anti-aliasing and fill it with a
pattern or a gradient or an image, this is for the web. I can't figure
out how to use either layer masks or what in order to maintain
different transparencies in the text that is anti-aliased. I have
stuggled with this a while, have looked on the web, and in Bunks book,
and I can´t figure it out. Can someone steer me in the right
direction, or give me some simple instructions?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Gimp-user] maintain anit-aliasing with a fill

2003-06-07 Thread Judy Wilson
It worked great first time! Thank you sooo much. I'll use this a
million times!

* Eric Pierce [EMAIL PROTECTED] [030607 12:29]:
I'd do it with a mask.

 Try this.
 1. Render the text in black on a white background (same layer)
 2. Invert the image (so the text is white and background black)
 3. Make a new transparent layer
 4. Right click on the transparent layer in the layer dialog box, and
select add layer mask - Hit OK (the default is fine)
 5. Now return to the layer w/text and select all and copy.
 6. Next, select the layer mask in the layer dialog box, not the
transparent image, the mask (to the right of the image)
 7. Now paste what you copied in step 5 and anchor the image. The should
paste the image (w/text) into the mask.
 8. Now turn off the bottom layer (the one w/text) in the layer dialog box
(the eye-ball) so it doesn't show.
 9. Lastly, select the transparent image in the layer dialog box (just left
of the mask) and fill it whatever pattern/color you so desire.

Hope that works. Let me know if it didn't.

[Gimp-user] Tutorial for beginners

2003-03-17 Thread Judy Wilson
We have recently uploaded a tutorial for beginners with The Gimp. There
is an html version and one you can download and open in OOo Writer.
The images used are also there to download. This was written to start
from the beginning, but there are some basics about several things.
You can find it on

www.linux.bz

The links to The Gimp are clearly marked.

I started with Grokking the Gimp and could have used some things a
little more basic, though I learned a lot! Still learning. I love it!

We're promoting open source in Belize!

Re: [Gimp-user] Re: Vector Drawing Program Suggestions

2003-01-17 Thread Judy Wilson
together images from multiple scans, which requires
 very
precise control over image rotation, especially for larger images.
  3. Clean up, rotate, resize, and crop scanned images.
  4. Create simple symbols as compount objects to be reused in map layers
 for
  common features.
  5. Create multiple map layers using vector based objects, including text,
simple shapes, color fills, and grouped objects, some with transparency.
  6. Select a specific portion and desired scale for the final map that I
 want
printed (Corel Draw is particularly awkward at this) then print it on
 either
a large format inkjet plotter (up to 54 width by essentially unlimited
length), or on a smaller inkjet printer than can handle paper sizes up to
17 x 44. When printing on the smaller printer, we often print maps on
 11
x 17 paper that are too large to fit on a single page, so the software
 must
  have output tiling capabilities.
  7. Enable/disable various layers, change map portions or scales, and print
again until all desired maps have been created.
  8. Sometimes I will want to script some of this process, and I may want to
use an unrelated external program to help generate the necessary script.

Both Corel Draw and a number of the other programs that I have tried do
 have
most of the capabilities that I need, with the primary exception of
undesirable image size restrictions (typically 32K or 64K pixels per
dimension). However, I have not found any of these programs very easy to
use so far. I especially find Corel Draw's user interface to be
particularly cluttered, confusing, and difficult to use. My usage pattern
with these graphics is to do very intense work over the space of several
weeks, then to not use the program again for perhaps several months.
 During
this intervening time, I forget all of the essoteric nuances that are
necessary to get the job done using these programs, and seems like I have
 to
learn them all over again each time. This is especially true since I use
 a
large number of other highly complex programs in my work, all of which
 have
  different ways of doing things.

Can anyone help me out here with some good recommendations? Thanks!

  s/KAM

P.S. - Public domain, freeware, shareware, or inexpensive applications
preferered, but I'd consider almost anything.

Re: [Gimp-user] Problems with Mandrake 9.0

2002-10-31 Thread Judy Wilson
I'm having *exactly* the same problem when using the paint tool or the
clone tool. I posted this problem recently, but your description was
more accurate. And, yes, it started happening with Mandrake 9.0.

My husband, the geek in the family, says it's probably a problem with
XFree86, the graphic system, and we have to wait for a fix. It's
difficult when trying to edit and graphic and it does what you want
but doen't render that way!

Glad you posted this problem.

 Hi all,

Has anybody else experienced problems when trying to change the color of
individual pixels when creating or editing a graphic?
When I try to change the color of individual pixels using the pencil (
 with the smallest *point*) the pixel may or may not actually change;
sometimes, actually quite often, the pixels are changed in a seemingly
random order, substituting the surrounding pixels instead of the one that
I clicked on (if I drag the pencil, then blocks of pixels are randomly
 changed).

Re: [Gimp-user] Help needed with image manipulation

2002-08-25 Thread Judy Wilson

When I do this, I simply clone over the person, which can be
difficult, depending on how big the person is and how complicated the
image is. I once removed a group of people in front of a building by
doing this.

My husband thinks I have a clone-happy hand! :-)

Good luck!

Re: [Gimp-user] Editing masks

2002-07-09 Thread Judy Wilson

I started using the Gimp a few months ago and struggled with this at
first, too. I'll see if I can help. To see how altering a selection
with a channel mask, follow these steps.
1. Open an image and make a selection.
2. Right click in the image and do Select/Save to Channel
3. Make sure your layers dialog box is open (C-l) and click on the
channels tab to see your channel mask selection.
4. Toggle on the eye to activate the mask. The selection will still be
   there.
5. Remove the selection (the dotted lines) with C-S-a and you have the
mask remaining.
6. Double click on the bar with Selection Mask copy, you can name the
channel mask and set a color by double clicking on the black box.
Opacity setting of about 50 works well.
7. Now you're ready to alter your mask. Select the paintbrush tool, to
add to the mask, make sure the foreground color is black. To
subtract from the mask, switch the foreground color to white.
8. For this to work, be sure the layer that's active is the selection
mask layer in the channels area and the eye on the left of the bar
   is toggled on.
9. When you have the changes made you want, right click back on the
layers dialog box and click Channel to Selection. The Selection
with the moving ants will return.

This is a start for learning how the painting with masks works.

A simpler demonstation can be seen by clicking on the small red box
at the lower left of the image window. Make sure you have a selection.
The mask will be red. It can be altered with the paintbrush tool by
adding to the mask with the foreground black and subtracting with the
 foreground white.

 Hope this helps.

I have recently been making an effort to learn as much about using the

suggest that I should be able to use the painting tools to modify layer
masks and selection masks saved in channels. However these tools have
absolutely no effect and I'm wondering if there is something I am not
doing that is needed to be able to do this. I am using version 1.2.3,
