Both xsane and xscanimage alone work smoothly with the usb scanner.
The directories /ushr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/
and /usr/local/lib/gimp-2.0/plug-ins/
contain @xsane and @xscanimage.
When I launch the gimp 2.0 I see during the booting phase of the program
that xsane and xscanimage are detected as plugins
BUT... if I a ask to acquire an image neither xsane nor xscanimage are
displayed in the file-acquire menu (sorry I'm translating the menu item

What should I check and do in the end?

Hello
I don't know about the xscanimage, but for xsane do as described in the
readme:
To run xsane under the gimp(1), simply set a symbolic link from the
xsane-binary to one of
the gimp(1) plug-ins directories.

I did it, as I said in my message.

No - in your message you said it was in:
The directories /ushr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/
and /usr/local/lib/gimp-2.0/plug-ins/
but it has to be as an symbolic link in your user plug-ins directories,
like:
~/.gimp-2.0/plug-ins/

You're right, sorry!
I put this new link as you said but still doesn't work,i.e. xsane (which works
standalone, I repeat) is seen by the Gimp as a plug-in BUT doesn't appear
in the menu.
Ciao
Vittorio

How, as a standalone? if I call xsane without the Gimp open, it by
default scans to viewer, file or others, but under Gimp, it scans to the
Gimp.

My xsane under Gimp is located under 'file/acquire' from top-menu.

Of course things will become rather slow as soon as GIMP starts using
the swap file.

I did it again tonight under almost identical circumstances: Similar
background picture, similar text (only four text layers this time,
though): No 'sluggishness', no problems with saving - so in some way
it remains a mystery what happened last time!?

Are you sure the circumstances were identical? Did you have anything
else running on the box before that's not running now? I still
suspect it was an issue of not enough memory/swap.

Hello
On a Suse 9.2 self-compiled Gimp 2.2 with 1 Gb of Ram and 1 Gb of swap,
and app. 30 Gb free on the harddrive where Gimp has it's swap/cache.
I have been working on some hollyday photos, all about 3,5 Mb of size,
to crop, rotate and others to make them ready for showing on the tv.
All were OK and I made copies in the xcf format, but when I tried to
save in the jpeg format, Gimp crashed - not each time, but still too often.

You write that you have an Mandrake, and downloaded for Fedora.
Normally it's recommended to pick a package for the distribution.

You can look at
http://www.greyc.ensicaen.fr/~dtschump/greycstoration/index.html and
use that program for resizing. An impressive demonstration of the
power of this algorithm can be found at
http://www.greyc.ensicaen.fr/~dtschump/greycstoration/demo.html

btw, is there anyone working on a gimp plugin for this?

Have a look at your first link - it works great here.

SuSE users trying to get gimp-devel working (e.g. to compile
plug-ins) will probably also need to install XFree86-libs-dev.
I don't know if it's needed for gimp-perl, but it's needed for
some plug-ins and isn't pulled in automatically.

...Akkana
As far as I remember it was with the version 9.3 SuSE skipped the XFree,
and now uses the xorg.
On my DVD-disk there are an 'xorg-x11-libs' file, but no '-devel'
counterpart.

Does it mean, that all is included in the 'normal' file, or is 'the
rest' just missing.
I have been used to SuSE through use for a couple of years, and as long
as you are satisfied with their packages, it's a great system, but for
the rest...
I am trying out other distros on an extra disk, so I can always turn
back to my productive system, but it is hard to find an replacement
(with my skills - and interests).

As I see your pictures, your problem is not a question on how to use
Gimp, but how to use your camera.
At least picture IMG_3896 is for me to see, a matter of whitebalance -
if not all the pictures.
