Or go to Tool Options for the text tool and check "Use editor".
Then you'll get a dialog like older GIMPs used that lets you
edit text without selecting it, and you can change the font in
Tool Options as in older versions.

Expanding on that - modifying the fontconfig settings is the way to go.

Instead of modifying the global configuration - which might be
overwritten by a new GIMP package - making changes to your own personal
fonts.conf file is more durable.

The docs intended for fontconfig users are located at
https://www.freedesktop.org/software/fontconfig/fontconfig-user.html

In principle, you want something along the lines of

/usr/share/fonts/foo/*

or maybe a more fine-grained rejection based on font family names (or
other attributes):

The on-canvas text editor works /very/ differently from the earlier
"in its own box" text editor. The first thing I would try is
opening the image, selecting the text layer I want to work on,
activate the Text tool, and click on the text to bring up the
on-canvas editor. Then /select/ all the text with the mouse, then
/change/ the font name in the small on-canvas control box.

[Gimp-user] Unable to set font in GIMP 2.8.14

2016-03-27 Thread Bret Busby
Hello.

Some time ago, I started a project using the then version of GIMP,
that ran on Debian 6, and I was able to set the font for text that I
entered.

I have tried to resume the project, using GIMP 2.8.14, running on
UbuntuMATE 15.10, and, whatever I do, I am now not able to set the
font for text to be entered.

The font that I want to use, is Andika, and, it is installed, and, it
shows in the Windows -> Dockable Dialogs -> Fonts dialogue box, and, I
got it highlighted (but, it become unhighlighted, when the application
is closed and then reloaded), but the only font that the application
will apparently use, is the application default font; the "Sans" font.

Without being required to delete all of the listed fonts apart from
Andika (if it can be done), how can I force the application to use the
Andika font, which font, I have successfully used in the GIMP, when I
was running the GIMP on Debian 6?

That's the problem, then. If I recall correctly, you can take the machine to a
Certified Apple Technician, and they can recover that password or get around it
in some way. Check the Apple support site, and ask in their forums.

On OSX there are 4 default files paths in fonts.conf, which could be

Thanks again, Kevin!

The version I downloaded and installed, is 2.8.16, so I will go ahead and try
your icons. It seems that this is a problem for others as well which a quick
search with Google verified. And I think it should be one of the most
prioritized issues for the Gimp developer community as it “accessibility”
defines who can use the software, and who cannot.2

Using El Capitan. And there are two admin users on this system. One from the
original owner. One for me. I have lost track of the password for the original
owner's admin account. Also do not have the root password. While the original
owner is a friend of mine, he doesn't remember his password either. El Capitan's
"protection" for fonts in /System/Library/Fonts/ is apparently much stronger
than for Yosemite. Frankly, for a variety of reasons, I am sorry that I ever
upgraded to El Capitan. Much preferred Yosemite.

Re: [Gimp-user] Gimp Font List or remove unwanted fonts

2016-03-27 Thread uga...@talktalk.net
I did not suggest using Font Book.app to deactivate system files. I
tried to say that removing fonts from /System/Library/Fonts is
potentially harmful. I suggested using Font Book.app to browse,
organise and/or manage your fonts.
