Not sure what your question is?

If you’re looking for photography tools that are Free/Open Source Software
perhaps try joining us at https://pixls.us?

There’s even a couple of great projects that are focused on fill based
techniques for processing.

I have a life long interest in photography. The Ilford Manual of
Photography and the books by Ansel Adams and his zone system set my
standards for documentation. I program in Scheme (and C when I have
too).

GIMP models the photographic process more or less well depending upon
the quality of it's documentation. That said I am particularly
interested in the mathematical underpinnings of your "Digital
photography improvements". Perhaps y'all can point me in the right
direction.

Placing our images on to it? And tipping the image as if you are looking down

Beware: The tool set and workflow in GIMP and Photoshop are
different enough to make the transition from one to the other a
major challenge, at least in my experience.

A few years ago somebody gave me a copy of Photoshop. Initially I
discovered that I could not get it to do several very basic and
necessary things, so I resolved to try harder: I found tutorials
and manuals and resolved to use nothing else to edit photos for one
month, as a real test drive. Two weeks later, I uninstalled
Photoshop - not because "it sucks," obviously it does not if one is
used to it. But I found that it just wasn't worth the effort of
retraining to use it.

If you are at a 'beginner' skill level in Photoshop, getting used to
the GIMP probably won't be very hard. But if you have been using
Photoshop long enough for its tools and workflow to have become
ingrained habits, expect non-stop annoyance, at best, when starting
out with the GIMP: "It should do this, but it does that instead,
argh!" I think it would be worth the effort, your mileage may vary.

Some basic educational resources for new GIMP users:

https://docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-tutorial-quickies.html

Lots of tutorials and general inspiration, issue 1 has a very
excellent list of online resources for GIMP students:

http://gimpmagazine.org/category/magazines/

My own tutorial, which presents some basic information and shows the
configuration tweaks I use to set up the GIMP for daily use:

http://pilobilus.net/gimp_tutorial.html

You already found the tech support department - that's us kids on

As a long time Photoshop user, I have to agree. One thing you'll discover
fairly quickly, I think, is the way GIMP handles brushes. I've been using GIMP
for over a year, and the brushes palette still causes occasional consternation.

But it's absolutely worth it. I liked PS, thought it a good program, but I
wouldn't have it back if it was free.

I also recommend The Book of Gimp by Lecarme and Delvare. Saved me a lot of
pulled hair—and I'm bald. =^D

I found a copy of Akkana Peck's book, Beginning GIMP: From Novice to

Hello all! I'm fairly new to GIMP and even after reading the user manual,
it stills seems to be written for someone with a Ph.D. What I'm trying to
do is to take a scanned hand drawn picture and trace over it to make a
brand new image that's cleaner and delete the scanned image from the whole
thing so that only the new, GIMP drawing is there. Remember, I need this to
be in layman's terms, please. I'm doing a google search to find some
tutorials that are easier to follow than the manual while I wait for a

The actual 'drawing' part is not quite as easy as it looks from a glance, but
the general steps are:

1 - Open your scanned image in GIMP.
2 - Select Add New Layer from the Layers menu. The New Layer dialog pops
up, the only thing to check here is that the layer is initialized to
Transparent.
3 - If you aren't already, ensure that the new layer is the one selected in the
Layers dialog.
4 - Draw away!
5 - There are two ways to 'remove' the old layer when you're done: First, you
can simply hide it (click the eye icon in the layers dialog), which keeps it as
part of the open image (in case you need it later) or you can right-click its
entry in the layers list and select Delete layer.
6 - Save and/or export the result as desired. (Remembering that in 2.8 Save
is for XCF files only.)

Try righting on the image

Select Colors

Then select Threshold and see if you can adjust out the clutter.

Alternatively try Image-Colors-Curves and see if adjustment there
will clean it up for you

Lastly, try converting the image to indexed, Image-mode-Indexed and
set the number of colors to 2

You can keep your scanned image, once you clean it out, save it as an
xcf so you can do more work on it, then if you want a png or jpg, just
export it, File-Export to that format/file type
