There are a few other cheat sheets on there as well.

Re: Earthlink Cable

2005-08-13 Thread Numberwhun
True, it definately is cheaper than Comcast, but the only thing that is
keeping me from switching to Earthlink is the fact that they recently
deregulated(I think that is the correct term), meaning that Comcast no
longer has to allow 3rd parties such as Earthlink over their lines.
Hopefully for those on the Earthllink service, their ISP can keep up
good relations with the media giant.

I have two of these running for 14 months, no complaints:

They're 5.25 which I use for IDE hotswap sleds:

I also have some Speeze 3.5 of the same vintage, all aluminum,

the replacement is bigger and has an annoying blue 'neon' bar in the

Any way to do that?

Steven,

Ok, I am by no means a sendmail expert. In fact, I haven't played with
it in a long time. But, I did some googling and found the following
excerpt:

  Sendmail Validation

The check_compat ruleset compares
all senders and receiver pairs before
mail is delivered. It validates the mail based on the results of
the comparison. It checks to see if host A can legally send a message
to host B. check_compat is called for
all mail deliveries, not just SMTP transactions.
It is used in the following situations:

A set of users who are restricted
from sending mail messages to external domains need to send mail
messages to internal; domains. Both the sender and recipient addresses
are checked to ensure that they are in the local domain.

A particular user needs to ensure that he
or she
does not receive mail messages from a specific source.

A particular host needs to ensure that
external
senders do not use that host as a a mail relay. The mail messages
are screened based on the sender's hostname.

The link to the page is: http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-90685/ch04s09.html

The first bullet point, which checks the validity of user accounts
against the local domain sounds like what you are looking for.

250 gig external hd, dual 9cell batteries) which I pimped out as it is
going to have to last me a while. I have been doing some searching on
places like google and cannot really find anyone that has installed
Linux on this particular model. I have even checked
www.*linux*-laptop.net and there is no listing for this model there.

Basically, I am just curious if anyone here on the list has installed

Did anything fail to work?

If you're set up to build your own kernels you could

make menuconfig

your kernel such that it's better able to recognize your
particular processor. It's possible that your distribution
ships with its kernels in some lowest-common-denominator
configuration that isn't able to grok your CPU.

Athlon XP 1700, 1.47ghz). My problem is, when it boots, it registers the
following on the main screen:

 Unknown Processor ( 1.100 ghz )

The problem is, it is not recognizing my processor and the 'ghz' is definately
off. I have an MSI K7TTurbo - Socket A motherboard. I am just wondering, since
it has been so very long since I built a computer, if anyone knows what is wrong
that the processor is not recognized? Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!
I have Linux installed and running, no problem, but I would really like it to

Re: How many folks who use ATTBI realize they'll probably need to change their email addresses *again*!

2003-01-22 Thread numberwhun
I had not heard about the prices going up. I know the raised them recently if
you did not have cable tv as well, but if they keep raising the price, I may
investigate Earthlink or dial up till something else comes available in my
area. Unfortunately ATT have a monopoly in my area as there is not DSL.

Jeff

There are also hints that they will be raising prices again. Considering
that ATT just did this within the last couple of months, it's a bit
amazing. Maybe they subscribe (no pun intended) to the What the market will
bear school of marketing. Maybe they haven't heard that a lot of high tech
folks aren't working just now and that their accounts may dry up a lot
 faster than anticipated.

P.S. Actually it's been so cold lately maybe hell is freezing over... ;^)

I had to call ATT after they turned off all of my email accounts, stating
that my accounts were inactive due to a complete screw up on their end. I
know, total shocker. It was at that time that they told me that I would be
changing as of the first week in February, but I have not seen any
notification go out. Ya think they would tell everyone, but obviously
things will not change with the new ownership.

I certainly was aware that Comcast had bought ATT broadband. For some

that's not true. Has anyone heard anything different? Given that we had to
switch addresses this past February as a result of the lost mediaone.net
domain name it seems particularly nasty to need to do it again a year or so
 later...

P.S. Which opens up the discusson - what do you do if you want a permanent
email address? I'm signed up at bigfoot and will likely re-subsribe from
 that email/domain address.

OT: Penguins

2002-12-24 Thread numberwhun
I saw this post on BLUG and found it funny, not to mention Penguin related.

Jeff

-- Start Forwarded Message --
I got this from the newsletter I'm laying out. It's a guide for anyone
in PR that has to get a real live penguin for a press conference:

“A Beginners Guide to Penguins at Press Conferences”
Erin Sutton, Assistant Account Executive, San Francisco

It always seems to be 3:00 p.m. on a Friday when a client gives you the
most challenging task of the week. In the case of the Sun Microsystem’s
Linux launch, it was “Find me a Penguin.” Penguins are the official
“geek” mascot of the Linux Open Source Software community, and Sun
thought a live penguin on stage with Sun’s CEO Scott McNealy would be a
crowd pleaser. Just in case Buzz readers get a similar request, here
are some helpful tips:

--Sourcing the Penguin…You need an Animal Trainer company. Just call
Los Angeles.
--Get Two Penguins …One penguin costs around $1500 but if you get two,
then the second is half off!
--Penguins Have Needs …Plan on paying for trainers (one penguin needs
two handlers) and health certificates at $55 bucks a pop.
--Penguins Can Fly ... Just not on Southwest Airlines. United will take
them for just $50.
--Hotels and Penguins …Want to make a hotel manager laugh? We asked
the manager of the Palace Hotel, San Francisco if they allow penguins
in the building. Amazingly, he said “Yes”.
--Penguins Squirm …Allow 10 minutes for the penguin to get ‘friendly’
with the CEO’s grip. Oh, and don’t expect a penguin to sit still on a
stage. They run. Fast.

As luck would have it, Sun decided Scott and Penguins wouldn’t be a
good mix afterall. At least we now know how to handle any future
penguin requests.

Re: [gnhlug-announce] My apologies...

2002-11-21 Thread numberwhun
I fully agree with the punishment. Everyone makes mistakes, but the punishment
must fit the crime. But I believe Paul should know, that if he doesn't accept
his punishment, we will hunt him down and force him to use Windows 2.0 until he
does. :)

 Paul's misconduct is indeed a serious matter;
 his resignation is hereby accepted.

Since punishment must fit the crime, we must
devise something truly heinous; some fate so
awful that we can barely contemplate it.

Done. Paul is hereby sentenced to...

REINSTATEMENT!

 BwaaAAHH! HAHAHAHAHAHA

Re: install questions

2002-09-17 Thread numberwhun

One suggestion is that you have a cdrom and a hard drive
on each chain. By having both the cdrom and the
cd-writer on the same chain, you will run into problems
should you try to copy a disk, drive to drive. Also, by
putting the hard drives on different chains, you will
increase the speed of the copy, vice having them on the
same chain.
Unfortunately, I have not used System Commander, so I am
in no position to comment on its use.

Regards,

Jeff Kirkland

I have an older machine, Pentium 233 MMX, 256MB SDRAM, 512 cache, (2) Western
Digital 8.4 GB HDD, 24X CDROM, 2X CDRW.
I am presently running it as a Win ME machine, with the (C:\) drive (hda) set as
primary master and the (D:\) drive (hdb) set as primary slave. The CDROM is
set as the secondary master, with the CDRW set as secondary slave.

My intention is to run a tri-boot machine letting Slackware 8.1 and FreeBSD
 4.6.2 split the second drive.

I also have V-Com's System Commander 7.05 software available.

I ran RedHat 5.x a few years ago, successfully sharing a single drive with
windoze and using an older version of system commander.

 1. Should I change the harddrives so that C:\ is primary master and D:\ is
 secondary master?

 2. Should I use the System Commander software?

 3. Should I install Slackware or FreeBSD first? Does it matter?

This is a learning/re-learning experience, so I have no problem trying something
and going back to scratch...any caveats, criticisms, or advice is appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Mike Shields

rather interesting:
