clarifying the account name.

If there is anything else I can try please let me know, thank you!

This seems to be variable.  LGFCU (local government federal credit
union) has a visa card that aqbanking seems to handle OK, but RBFCU
(Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union) consistently fails the same way
(no transactions).  Part of the difference seems to be the way the banks
handle the credit card accounts vs. their checking/savings accounts -
LGFCU lets you get there directly via the website, while RBFCU generates
a new page from the account list on the website to a site called
ezcardinfo.  BTW, IRA accounts - both Roth and regular - also seem to
fail, but money market accounts held in the same bank succeed.  There
may be no solution, although while I was running Quicken, they all
worked OK in that program. - Elmar

I've added the 3 files gnctimeperiod-utilities.scm, transaction.scm and
config.user to /home//.gnucash (Linux Mint, GC 2.6.12).  Under the
reports tab, I see 2 entries labveled "transaction report" - both seem
to be identical.  Running one of them gives me the result I needed
(summary totals by description field for a period of time).  The other
does the exact same.  And I noted a bug - I cannot set it to the
previous year's start and end dates in the options dialog.  It always
reports only the current year.  Did I install things wrongly? - Elmar

trial balance - how to find mismatch question

2018-02-15 Thread Elmar
The recent threads on trial balances has me wondering why mine seems to
be ~$1600 out of balance, despite having everything else in the account
balance and reconcile correctly, i.e. nothing in the imbalance account,
and setting the dates to the earliest date in the file and today.
Either I am not using it correctly or I do not understand how to 1) use
it and 2) find out what to do when it doesn't balance.  Is there a
tutorial?  The webpage documents (section 10.3.4.11. Trial Balance)
doesn't give much help. - Elmar

Elmar,

Reduce your ending date so the range is half of what it was. Re-run the report.
Is it s[t]ill out of balance? Keep doing this till you get a balance, then set
that ending date to a new start date, and start working forwards till you get
out of balance again. This will help you narrow down where on the calendar the
error occurred.

Regards,
Adrien
OK - did that and ran into something VERY strange.  Everything stayed in
balance up to 07/12/2016.  Setting that as the start date and 12/31/2016
as the end date, as soon as I hit "apply", QC overwrites the end date
with - get this - 02/27/1899 !!!  This of course produces nonsense.  One
day later (01/01/2017) works fine and shows the imbalance.  So, have I
1) found a bug, and 2) given I have narrowed the date range to a few
weeks, what report should I run to find the weirdness? - Elmar

[GNC] formulas in scheduled transaction templates?

2018-11-16 Thread Elmar
I have been watching the back and forth on automatically calculating
taxes, etc. on invoices, and wondered about the following situation:
when I download transactions form my bank, it gives me the net deposit
of (e.g.) a salary.  Is there a way to create a template that
back-calculates the various taxes and the gross amount that the net is
derived from?  This may be US specific, but Social Security, Medicare,
State and Federal taxes are all definable by percentage of the gross.
But template entries (for scheduled  transactions) do allow formulas, do
they? - Elmar

I believe the AutoSave feature has been present for many years under
Edit > Preferences > General > Files and should be in 2.6.12.  The
problem with that is that it freezes the UI during the save, which can
take more than a minute for some combinations of data file size and
locations of program, user and data.  Twenty percent or more
unavailability is not acceptable.  Worse, Auto means that it happens
exactly when the quarterback has the ball, the defensive line is
breaking through, the receivers are all covered with flypaper and the
TV replay cameras are not properly aimed.

That is why I choose manually when I want my backups.

I do this a few times each year when I screw up.

Configure Auto Save to save the file every 5 minutes. Then you should

Are files in that directory also backed up by BackupGnuCash.jar ? You should
restore to that directory as well if you want gnucash to find your saved

Well, never mind - I used a spreadsheet after exporting the account to
csv, A lot of sorting then deleting rows, extracting the day of the
month from the date and then function sumif with a criterion range of
1-31.  But having that in a report instead of day of the week would
still be nice.

/home//.local/share/gnucash

Should all of them have the same contents?  And if so, why the

enqueued (1)" - and no recourse other than "close". check/repair all did
nothing.  How do I clear this error?

p.s. I went into the online banking setup, discovered that all the
associations had been lost when I upgraded from Linux Mint 19.3 to 20
and thus QC also apparently auto-upgraded from 3.5 to 3.8, but fixing
these did not change the behavior.

Re: [GNC] flatpak 4.4 reports anomaly

2021-02-10 Thread Elmar
The sequence of events was that I had been running 3.8, but somehow it
started to fail badly, with CTD.  So I uninstalled that one and
reinstalled the one from the Mint repository, which was 2.6.19.  All
seemed well. I tried to reinstall 3.6 and then 3.8, then 3.11, but the
installs failed in weird ways, which I didn't bother to document - my
goal was to get to 4.4 anyway.  So I gave up and grabbed the flatpak of
4.4.  In all these versions, going up and down, the data file remained
perfect, and once I moved the "guts" of my aqbanking folder (archived
from version 3.8) into the correct folder for 4.4, my online banking
(downloads of transactions) also worked perfectly, and continue to
work.  The "guts" of the gnucash folder (the one holding the reports
templates) when copied from the 3.8 archive into the correct 4.4 folder
(under .var) seemed to go smoothly, and all my reports showed up fine,
and they run fine.  I just cannot edit or delete any one of them without
a CTD, and have to delete the settings6 folder to get them to show up
again.  All check and repair seems to do is look for imbalances across
the selected accounts, and it finds no problems.  It doesn't touch
report or online templates as far as I can see. So, as I said, my only
problem are editing my reports (running them works), and I see no way to
edit/resave them, since I CTD as soon as I try.

The menu item cals GC via "/usr/bin/flatpak run --branch=stable

And this is the first (and only) flatpak I have ever installed.  I

Out of curiosity have you been removing installed flatpaks manually by

[GNC] CSV matching for credit cards?

2021-04-01 Thread Elmar
Good evening - I have managed to figure out how to do the csv matches
for normal asset accounts, since the labels actually line up with what I
expect them to mean.  But I am having problems with credit cards.  My
csv looks like this:

Tran Date    Post Date    Description    Ref Number    Amount
3/20/2021    3/21/2021    [redacted]     19918    74.99
[lots more lines like the above]
3/3/2021    3/3/2021    PAYMENT - THANK YOU        -792.66

How does this line up with deposit?  Withdrawal? And in the gnucash file
the columns for liability accounts are increase and decrease, which does
match either the csv, or the importer.

Further, I can't get some matches that are obviously matches to match -
date, amount all both identical, but it says "no match". Why?

Re: [GNC] CSV matching for credit cards?

2021-04-01 Thread Elmar
Sorry - the csv is comma separated.  To post this I dumped it into
libreoffice, the copy/pasted into a text file, which of course removes
the commas. The original is like so:

Tran Date,Post Date,Description,Ref Number,Amount
3/20/2021,3/21/2021,[redacted],019918,74.99
...
3/3/2021,3/3/2021,PAYMENT - THANK YOU,,-792.66

Sorry for the confusion.  This is then in theimporter specification
(obviously skip first line) date, none, description, number,  and here I
stumble.  The liability account has headers that say Increase, and
Decrease.  Now is that a deposit in the importer or a withdrawal? It's
the switches in terminology that confuse me: "amount" in the csv vs.
deposit/withdrawal in the importer vs. increase/decrease in the
liability account.  What is which?  Is my "amount" a "deposit" that will
translate into an "increase" if a positive value?

And finally, the matching question is also unresolved.  Thanks for the
reply, and apologies for my denseness. - Elmar

Re: [GNC] OFX connect/AQbanking problem

2021-03-13 Thread Elmar
Thank you for the explanation, David.  My "pique" if you will, was the
lack of response following the last reply.  What I was hoping for was a
pointer to what changed between version 2 and version 4 of GC in
aqbanking, since the older version did downloads fine, but the new
version doesn't, or failing that, some way to diagnose the problem based
on the error message, or lastly a person I could contact that knows the
internals of the module, especially since Quicken is supported by the
bank (I don't have Quicken, btw).  In any case, I don't "blame" anyone,
especially not for a volunteer maintained and developed program. Such an
attitude is imho simply wrong.  I apologize if I came off too strong. -

Elmar,

The AQbanking connection is a commercially-maintained black box protocol that
was previously reverse engineered by the diligent volunteer maintainer of the
AQbanking package. The fact that it failed when the commercial vendor altered
the innards inside the box is not surprising. The ongoing challenges of
figuring out the workarounds demonstrates the skill with which that commercial
vendor has created their new system. There have been numerous discussions on
these lists regarding different attempts. That they haven't worked for you is
lamentable, to be sure, but not a reason to blame the group for not providing
you a solution.

Re: [GNC] CSV matching produces duplicates?

2021-03-03 Thread Elmar
Even if I know that the match exists, and I tell it that it does, it
replies that the match does not exist.  So I have to either leave it red
so it doesn't import, or accept the duplicate.  Which means keeping both
windows open (the match window and the account window), and manually
checking the matches myself.  Which defeats the entire purpose of
computer matching.

I know that is not wanted, but that is what we have to do to train the
Bayesian matching.  I am frustrated that the new matcher released in
the 3.x series is not learning to make matches that it did very well
in the old matcher.  If anyone has suggestions in this regard I am all
ears.

Sadly, while the bank offers integration with Quicken explicitly, they
do not expose the OFX file for me to download, so until they do, I am
stuck with CSV.  So I need to know how best to do this CSV.  My old
procedure was to download via the OFX with the date range always
extending back to one day before the last reconcile, just in case I
missed any transactions.  This of course results in the CSV having tons
of duplicates showing before I complete the import.  With the OFX, the
duplicate checking works pretty well perfectly, but with the CSV, it
doesn't appear to, unless I am using it wrong, i.e. clicking cleared
(old reconcile) on what I know is already in the file.  When I do click
C, the importer tells me No Match, which is wrong.  Bottom line seems to
be that I have to keep the acount window open beside the import window,
and use the mark 1 eyeball to find the duplicates, and (check me on
this) force them to display red to avoid duplicates in the file.  Is
this correct? - Elmar

[GNC] OFX connect/AQbanking problem.

2021-03-03 Thread Elmar
I upgraded from 2.6 to 4.4 via flatpak, and discovered that all my
online banking credentials/profiles have vanished.  So I have to
recreate - but using the set-up online banking setup tool, I created the
user OK, but when it comes time to retrieve the account list from the
bank (which DOES show up in the bank list, btw)  I get the following dialog:

14:01:12 Sending request...
14:01:12 Using GnuTLS default ciphers.
14:01:12 TLS: SSL-Ciphers negotiated: TLS1.2:ECDHE-RSA-AES-256-GCM:AEAD
14:01:12 Waiting for response...
14:01:12 No message received
14:01:12 Network error while waiting for response
14:01:12 Operation finished, you can now close this window.

GC retrieved fine in earlier versions; what is going wrong here? The
bank involved is the Local Government Federal Credit Union, if that
matters.  Since it showed up in the drop down list, I had hoped that it
would be all setup automagically.  Apparently not.  Running under Linux
Mint 19.3 Mate desktop in case that has any effect. - Elmar

I'm trying to edit and/or delete existing reports, not (yet) create new

[GNC] version 3.11, flatpak 4.4 and Status: enqueued (1) ???

2021-02-06 Thread Elmar
Good morning.  I've installed 3.11 from
https://launchpad.net/~sicklylife/+archive/ubuntu/gnucash by adding the
PPA, and then the software manager popped up and offered to upgrade from
the MINT provided version 2.6.19 (Linux Mint 19.3). Works fine except it
crashes to disk as soon as I invoke the aqbanking module to retrieve
transactions from the bank.  Restarting the program although it
complains about a lock being in place and reattempting the download
results in the enqueued error.  Deleting the setting6 folder from
.aqbanking lets the program try again, but I get the same error.  In
desperation, I loaded the flatpak version of 4.4, which runs fine (after
I used flatseal to let it see my data file on a different disk), but
none of my reports nor any of the aqbanking data settings are there.  So
2 questions - how do I fix 3.11 to not crash with aqbanking and/or where
do I put the "guts" of the .aqbanking and .gnucash folders (currently in
my home directory) into the flatpak version?  Thanks. - Elmar

2021-11-27 Thread Elmar
I'm not sure how I "hijacked" the thread.  I thought I started a new one
- apparently not.  Sorry.

I'm pretty sure that flatpak itself is the problem.  I just don't know
how to diagnose it, or provide the right data so that it can be
diagnosed by someone better than I.  I was hoping that since the
inability to launch  gnucash is how I ran into this, that somone else
would have had this problem and solved it.  I'll go the google route -
searching the Mint forums didn't help.  And I guess the gnucash list is
also not the place :)  I'll quit this thread here.

[GNC] Flatpak/Flatseal Gnucash fails to launch

2021-11-25 Thread Elmar

Good afternoon, all

I just went through a clean install, replacing my Linux Mint 19.3 with
Mint 20.2.  Gnucash 3.8 is provided and it opens my data file seemingly
OK, but I had the flatpak running version 4.x, and would like to get
that back.  I have installed and reinstalled flatpak, but when I click
on the icon for gnucash 4.x, I get the wait timer, and then nothing.
Flatseal also reacts the same way, i.e. does not open, although if
flatpak is really isntalled it should at least show its window.  Ideas
on how to get the flatpak version running again?  Thanks

[GNC] Solved - Re: Price database

2022-10-16 Thread Elmar
Thank you!  It worked!  I got DB Browser for SQLite running on Linux
Mint, exported the GC file to sqlite3, opened in the program, and ran
the code. I  couldn't figure out how to export the resulting table into
csv, but simply highlighted the thing, and copy/pasted it into
LibreOffice Calc.  Just need to copy over the column headings and it's
what I needed done.  Again, thank you for the expertise and the help!

[GNC] graphing the price database vs. time

2022-10-07 Thread Elmar
I am looking through the various reports and cannot see how to graph the
price database for the various investment entries as a function of
time.  So either I need to know how to export the price database to csv
for import to a spreadsheet program, or I need to know how to do a line
chart in GC for the database.  Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
Thanks. - Elmar

Re: [GNC] graphing the price database vs. time

2022-10-07 Thread Elmar
Looked at that, but it lumps them all together, i.e. I have a half dozen
stocks under retirement accounts.  I select children and all I get is
one line.  It won't do a multi-line plot by investment.  The stacked bar
plot is close but not what I want. where and how is the price database
encoded/stored in GC?

Re: [GNC] Price database

2022-10-15 Thread Elmar
Thank you, but how I have my investments labeled make sense to me, and
not to any online databases.  I personally enter the quarterly (or
monthly) prices that the statements give me (some of which are not
tracked by, say, finance:quote), so conventional tools are really
useless for me.  It's my personal GC price database I want to export as
a whole thing (all the "investments", with all their date stamped data,
appropriately labeled for later massaging in a spreadsheet).

Re: [GNC] Price database

2022-10-15 Thread Elmar
Thank you.  This will be a new experience for me - I have never even
looked at SQL, much less have any facility with it.  All the included
reports don't touch the price database itself, and I don't know how to
create an appropriate one from the menu in GC. Off to look at the wiki
:)  Probably tomorrow - too late today, and I have other more homely
tasks still to do.

The easiest would be to save your book to SQLite3: File>Save As...,
pick Sqlite3 from the drop-down at the top of the dialog, pick a file
name and location.
Then run a query on the prices table (see
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/SQL#Prices for the schema; you may want
to join on commodities to get the security's symbol and namespace and
the currency's ISO-4217 code). Note that the actual price is saved in
two fields, value_num and value_denom, that represents a fraction.
Sqlite3 has a -csv option to output csv and a -o option to write a file.

Re: [GNC] Size of description column not shrinkable?

2023-12-17 Thread Elmar
Tried that - and godlings, the tab bar is huge and not shrinkable at
all.  I'll try the font thing, because at the moment, it tries to crunch
the last column often cutting off the "cents" of the totals, and there
is no obvious way to specify the default widths of any column
numerically or by double clicking on the column header to make it
auto-magically adjust to fit all its entries.  I gather that the
description column has a "spring" width, then, i.e. it takes whatever it
can get?

The description column has a minimum width of whatever it takes to

you need to reduce the width of the entire GnuCash window or
increase the default font size on your display.

[GNC] closing accounts

How do you actually CLOSE but not delete an account, so that no new

[GNC] reports blank query

This command works great for my flatpak GC from the terminal window

not paying close enough attention. The correct command is
