14 January 2004

DARE TO DREAM: 'Dream, he said. For dreams transform into thoughts and
thoughts result into action. Grow to become a leader. Those were the words
of encouragement showered by President APJ Abdul Kalam on the special
students of Sanjay School, Porvorim, on Jan 13. The president headed
straight for the classrooms, answering questions and writing on the black
board for them. The missile man was particularly moved by a question from a
special girl, What can I do for others? Elaborating on his philosophy of
life, Kalam stated, When a small child cries, it means-give me something. A
teenager states to his parents and teachers-leave me alone, I will handle
it, while adults say-Let's work together. (GT)

VIRTUAL UNIVERSITY: President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, yesterday (Jan
13) launched Goa Educational Development Corporation and distance education
programme of Goa University/IIT Mumbai in the presence of Governor Kidar
Nath Sahani, CM Manohar Parrikar and other dignitaries. Dr Kalam said the
current technology development and open market economy provides more
challenges for every citizen in India. He stated that with DEP programmes
the number of quality teachers will grow. He also said that it is time we
start looking at the possibility of creating a virtual university in India
through networking of all the universities and other educational
institutions for imparting universal tele-education synergizing their core
competence, which would also help expansion of telecommunications and IT
services. To overcome the problem of finding employment for about 30 lakh
graduates generated every year, he said, our educational system should
highlight the importance of entrepreneurship, which will provide them with
creativity, freedom and ability to generate wealth. (GT)

KALAM'S 'MISSION 2020': Stating that Goa exports iron ore to developed
countries from Mormugao Port, President Kalam said if the iron ore was made
into steel products in India, the country's steel production would shoot up.
So there is tremendous potential to increase the production in the
industrial sector, he said. The President suggested that the stress should
be given on strengthening the communication network in the country. He said
entire Goa can be networked with tele-education and e-governance. (NT)

EMAIL TO THE PRESIDENT: The President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has
invited students from Goa to write to him via the website
www.presidentofindia.nic.in (email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and assured
a reply to their queries. (GT)

KALAM'S MANTRA FOR PROGRESS: Inculcate righteousness, imbibe leadership
qualities, and excel in education. That's the mantra of scientist-President
Kalam for transforming India into a developed country by the year 2020.
This is my mission, the President said, impressing upon the young ones the
need for visualizing India as a happy, safe and peaceful country by 2020. He
said, We can make a great India through good education coupled with
healthcare, by developing agriculture and food processing, developing
communication and infrastructure and by being self-reliant. (GT)

PRESIDENT PREFERS NEEM: Dr Kalam had to answer a question on the toothpaste
he uses. Five-year-old Sahanaz Banu wanted to know whether the President
chooses his own toothpaste. Apparently impressed by the boy's query, he said
with a smile, my preference is for neem toothpaste. (H)

KIDS ENTERTAIN PRESIDENT: Children of 22 Bal Bhavan Kendras in the state and
Apna Ghar-the home for the juveniles-entertained President Kalam with Goan
folklore and dances at the Kala Academy. The president felicitated four
'special' children: Perpetua D'Costa, Sharon Pereira, Armelina Rodrigues and
Ketan Bhobe, for binging honour and fame by winning gold and silver medals
in sports and Sport Festival for Special Children held in Dublin in Ireland
recently. (H)

WOMAN ABANDONS BABY: A hapless mother struggling to look after her little
children would move any person to lend a helping hand. The Shanke family at
Old Market, Margao, was no different when a migrant woman with four children
turned up at the residence on Sunday noon. The woman left her three-month
old infant girl with the Shanke's, promising to take her possession later in
the evening, but never to return till date. (H)

SALIGAO COMUNIDADE: Dean D'Cruz was elected president of the Saligao
Comunidade recently. The other elected members are Vice President Tony Rex D
'Souza, Attorney Lenny da Gama, asst Attorney Lazarus Coelho, Treasurer Eric
Remedios, and Asst Treasurer Denzil Fernandes. (H)

SETS HIMSELF ABLAZE: Mahesh Shirvoicar, a 22-year-old man from Chimbel,
allegedly set himself ablaze after pouring kerosene over his body on January
12. He was reportedly mentally disturbed for quite some time. (H)

I don't get it. Should Goan children learn Portuguese

Dear Mr. Kamath,

It is not rare for me to receive propaganda mail from
brainwashed folks . I often let it ride but today is a
Tuesday a day I like to write. So let me take you up
(politely) on a few of your points.

You did call Francis Xavier a murderer. Do you have
ANY proof that Francis Xavier murdered anybody?

If you are about to refer to the mantra about the
Horrible Inquisition (which I condemn), may I draw
your attention to the oft forgotten fact that Francis
Xavier was dead a good 9 years before the Inquisition
came to Goa.

(1)
The other RSS talking points about SFX and the
Inquisition are discussed in the following article
http://www.colaco.net/1/InquiForeword.htm
The Catholic Church must apologize for the very unholy
Inquisition during which many people were tortured and
sent to their fiery deaths.

MAY I remind you of SATI where millions of widows were
sent to their premature death by Hindus - before the
Portuguese banned it in Goa!

I know that NOW you will definitely call the Hindu
Brahmins, murderers!

*
I also hope that you will write a word or two about
the Caste System and the 1000s of years of demeaning
that Hindu Brahmins organised - for the under classes
and Outcastes.

this time a Global Meet going on in India which is
dealing with this issue

NEW DELHI : India has for years fought to keep caste

How do you explain the near disappearance of Buddhism
from India (widespread during Emperor Ashoka's time)?

About beef-eating: Well.you are talking to a

Hindus were originally non-beef eaters i.e. before the
Buddhists came on the scene.

Indian beef-eating beef
A scholarly book on the role of beef-eating in Indian

GOACOM DAILY NEWS CLIPPINGS
12 January 2004

TREMORS FELT IN CANACONA: The villagers of Poinguinim and nearby areas in
Canacona taluka yesterday (Jan 11) experienced mild tremors even as the
Indian Meteorological department said that light disturbances were recorded
in their chart. According to the villagers, the earthquake like tremors were
experienced by them at round 2.20 pm and most of them immediately ran out of
their houses for safety. The Observatory, however, could not find anything
like an earthquake on their chart and suspected that disturbance could be
due to the use of explosives in the nearby mining areas. (GT)

GOA'S HIGH RATING ON TV SHOW: Goa has something more to crow about-a high
rating in a Report Card put out by the SAB TV. Goa is already ahead of the
nation in some terms and would like to set itself higher targets than the
rest of India, the Chief Minister suggested, in an interview telecast
repeatedly on Sunday (Jan 11). It's already ahead of some 2011 targets, the
Chief Minister told the interviewer. SAB TV showed visuals of different
cultures and religion, visiting tourists, and the local peacefulness. (H)

PROPERTY GUTTED IN PANAJI: The overheating of an electrical motor in the
aquarium shop in the Panaji Municipal garden opposite Manvins Hotel, caused
a loss of Rs.16.5 lakh on 10 Jan night. Alifanio Mendes, who owns the
aquarium, complained that he suffered a loss of Rs.2.5 lakh, while Nav Ratan
Electric Company owner Narbath Singh of Rajasthan said that he suffered
maximum loss, which was estimated to be about Rs.14 lakh. (GT)

COW SHEDS ABLAZE: In a fire accident reported at Pipalwada-Amona in
Bicholim, two cowsheds were gutted claiming the life of one animal while
another animal in the shed suffered injuries. (NT)

CITY WASTE FOR MINE DUMP: A mining company (Dempo) and an NGO (Goa
Foundation) are coming together in a new role to use garbage to nurture the
afforestation of a devastated patch in a mining area. The waste from the
Mapusa Municipality is being transported to the site (in Bicholim) and
composted to make organic manure for the regreening process. At present,
Mapusa Municipal Council does not have a proper site to dispose off the
waste, so a part of the compostable variety will go to Bicholim. (GT)

COCONUT PLUCKING EASIER NOW: Coconut plucking may no longer be a formidable
task in Goa, now with coconut plucking devices being promoted by the
Department of Agriculture. Some 60 people were trained this year to handle
the coconut plucking device. Spraying of coconuts, identification for pests
and cleaning of coconut trees atop was also a part of the training
programme. The device costs Rs.1,100 but was given free of cost to the
trainees. (H)

GAMBLING ACTIVITIES ON THE RISE: In the recent weeks, festive season is in
full flow in the Pernem taluka with fairs being the order of the day. While
it is a joyous occasion eagerly awaited by young and old in the village, the
occasion itself provides an ideal opportunity for gamblers to be at their
'business' after a long recess. Sadly, gambling has now been invariably
associated with fairs. (GT)

PANJIM, GARDEN CITY OF GOA? Church Square Garden, Mermaid Garden, Menezes
Braganza Garden, Salvador de Souza Garden, Francisco Luis Gomes Garden at
Campal. The Corporation of the City of Panaji boasts of having the highest
number of gardens/traffic islands and open spaces in the entire State. The
Corporation of Panaji has dedicated the year 2003 to the maintenance and
greening of this beautiful capital city. (Daniel D'Souza in Herald)

ART AT FONTAINHAS: Some are nonagenarians, others just out of their teens.
There are local artists, others drawn to Goa from across the country and
across international boundaries. Some are Goan expats who have scoured the
world for decades, now back home. (H)

MAPUSA COMUNIDADE: It was a cake-walk for the panel put up by the outgoing
attorney Michael Carrasco and president Agnel Braganza, as their panel was
elected unopposed on January 11. The following members were elected as the
new managing committee for 2004-2007: president Victor D'Mello, substitute
president Clemente D'Souza (Vithal), treasurer Seraphian D'Souza, substitute
treasurer Valerian Carrasco, attorney Savio Carrasco and substitute attorney
Gregorio Braganza. (H)

BOOK RELEASED: The Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Mr Vishwas Satarkar
released a book Jitya Kudichi Devi Shree Mandodari, written by Mr RV
Phadte, at a function held on the banks of the Mandodari Lake, in Talewada,
Betqui, on January 11. The book traces the history and folk tales on
Mandodari Lake and origin of people of surname Phadte, who have settled at
Talewade Bequi coming from Verna during the colonial rule. (NT)

THE AGITATION THAT BROUGHT IN 'HALF TICKET': On January 11, 1979, the

INVITATION to VHAG Workshop on Rational Use of Drugs
-
WORKSHOP ON RATIONAL USE OF DRUGS
on Sunday 18th January 2004
9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
 HOTEL THE MAJESTIC, PORVORIM GOA
Organised by:
Voluntary Health Association of Goa (VHAG)
in collaboration with
Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA)
Goa State Branch.

Rational use of Drugs: “Means that the patient’s receive medications
appropriate to their clinical needs, in doses that meet their own
requirement, for an adequate period of time, and at lowest cost
for them and their community.”- W.H.O.
Unfortunately, irrational drugs and combinations, banned and
bannable drugs and combinations however continue to flourish
in India. We have around 5,000 drugs and combinations whereas
most essential drugs lists recommend no more than 350. Even
though most drugs and combinations may not be considered
rational they are heavily promoted, widely prescribed, and consumed,
bringing considerable monetary burden on the public as well as the
exchequer, and of course doing harm in terms of unnecessary
and toxic effects!
The W.H.O. had initiated efforts to promote rational drug use
in 1977 with the introduction of the concept of essential Drugs.
Subsequently, this list has been revised every few years 8 times.
The idea behind this concept is that a limited number of medicines
would lead to a better supply of medicines, better prescribing,
lower health care cost.
Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have generated their own list of
essential drugs in line with this policy, and are drawing considerable
success.
The present workshop seeks to put before the participants irrational
drugs, irrational prescribing behaviours and cost and damage involved,
concept of Rational Use of Drugs, Rational Drug Policies, etc.
The workshop thus seeks to enlighten the participants, so that they
could explore, and then draw up an agenda for need and implementation
of a Rational Drug Policy for Goa.
THE FACULTY: The faculty for the workshop are two eminent
activists in the field of Rational Drug Promotion and Drug Policies
with long years of experience.
DR. VISHWAS RANE : is associated with the Rational Drug
Movement since 1972 and has also been involved in movements
for Rational Drug Policy, National Health Policy. He is the founder
member of All India Drug Action Network (AIDAN)
DR. MIRA SHIVA : has around 24 years of experience in drug related
activities. She has coordinated initiated the low cost Drugs
Rational Therapeutics Activities and issues related to Rational Drug
Use. She is the coordinator of AIDAN
Both Dr. Rane Dr. Shiva have authored the book Banned
Bannable Drugs.
PARTICIPANTS: This interactive workshop seeks to invite a wide
range of participants, who could be, or could get to be interested
in a Rational Drug Use promotion programme.
The workshop is open to Doctors, Drug Policy and Decision makers,
Pharmacists, Nurses, and interested activists, NGO’s, Lawyers,
Consumer groups, and Media persons.

[Goanet] Re: Science and Religion Sangam (SRS) in Goa

[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

But the human nature reflects God's creation. Therefore, morality is
God's Will.

Not true. Humans have evolved from mammalian ancestors.
Sociobiologists and evolutionary psychologists have shown that human
nature and morality have strong evolutionary bases.

The brain may be organ or seat of mind, but it cannot function
without the vital principle or SOUL.

Science conclusively showed more than fifty years ago that there is
no vital principle. Vitalism and dualism are both dead. We know
exactly why and how a brain functions. There is no spooky stuff in
it.

These are not matters of faith. Your beliefs in this regard are
simply wrong.

Cheers,

Santosh

Re: [Goanet]Colonial Goa and Portugal

2004-01-13 Thread Bernado Colaco
I wonder if a comparision would be made of several
countries during the 50's and 60's with reference to
Goa in terms of economics, was the west not depressed
after the 2nd world war?

The invasion of Goa clearly benefitted bharat from the
sale of iron ore with Japan being its main buyer. In
the 50's bharat hardly had any foreign exchange. So in
the 60's it was the sale of iron ore, than came drugs
for toursim, remittance from the gulf. All this has
helped to prop the bharat union. What are the return
for Goa? Crime, corruption, religious bigotry, Goan
losing jobs, failed policies, unplanned development?

With reference to Portugal, it had enough resources in
Angola and Mozambique to support Goa. Oh we forget
about the port of Mormugao and the Airport that has
benefitted the bharati economy and its invading army.
