Konkan Daiz Yatra
A Spectacular Dance Ballet

The legend Saraswati arose and thronged into the
streets of Mumbai and exulted through its waves into
the prestigious Shannmukhanand hall on 23rd October
2004 for Konkan Daiz Yatra. All the streets from
Virar, Vasai, Miraroad, Borivli, Malad, Andheri,
Jerimeri, Sakinaka, Vakola, Bandra, Dadar, Byculla,
Colaba, Wadala, Mulund, Ghatkoper, Kanjurmarg, Thane,
New Bombay led to King Circle towards a glorious new
Yatra. It was infact a mammoth crowd of Saraswati
gathered at one place in the name of Konkani
forgetting the cast, creed, dialects and geographical
differences.

It was the moment of immense joy, moment of belonging,
moment of unity and the moment of creation of history
with 3000 Konkani’s joined at one place in Mumbai for
the cause of Konkani. In fact the larger crowd who
waited till the last moment to get passes had to get
disappointed as all the passes were given out five
days prior to the show.

It was a time of excitement and thrill to see 3000
people seating and watching this great show. Claps
after claps from this huge crowd was heard as the
forgotten roars of the waves in the unearthed river
Saraswati giving new hope to Konkani. The scene of
river Saraswati enacted by the tiny tots itself was
the challenge to the people to carry on its flow.

“This is not enough” said, Mr. Albert W. D’Souza in
his presidential speech. “We need a Konkani Sahitya
Akademy and a full fledge Konkani Bhavan to work for
the cause of our people and our language. Over 40
communities speak Konkani and they are scattered all
over the coasts of Maharashtra. Though Konkani is a
minority language in the state of Maharashtra the
government has not taken enough care to develop the
language over the years. We will fight for this new
cause.” He said.

“We need to stress on one script for Konkani. If one
script is used by all communities of Konkani, the
language can see faster developments” insisted the ex
Police Commissioner and ex Anti Corruption Bureau
Director Mr. Ronald H. Mendonca.

Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Bombay Most Rev Ferdinand
J Fonseca said "it is a joy to see all Hindu, Muslim &
Christians gathered together in the name of their
mother tongue Konkani."

“Let us nurture our mother tongue and give due respect
to our Lord” said Mrs. Grace Pinto in her charismatic
speech. She also honoured Mr. Albert W. D’Souza and
his wife Mrs. Evlina A. D’Souza with the garland of
“Pangla Kolle” for the successful organization of the
show.

Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay & the chief of Education
board Most Rev Percival Joseph Fernandes, Lord Krishna
Bank CEO & MD Mr. R. M. Nayak, Music Maestro of world
fame Dr. Charles Vas SVD, Konkani Bhasha Mandal
President Mr. P. N. Shanbhag & secretary Mr. J. B.
Moraes too spoke on this vocation.

Souvenir of Konkan Daiz yatra was released on this
occasion. The ex police commissioner Mr. Ronald H.
Mendonca released the book “40 Konknni Magnni” (40
Konkani Prayers), the transliteration of Mangalorean
Konkani Prayers in to Roman script by Ancy Paladka.
This book made new record on this day by the sale of
more than 600 copies during the show. “Ami Konglish
Uloitanv” book by Mr. J. B. Sequiera was inaugurated
by Mrs. Grace Pinto. “Hanv Mhonis Zalam” book by
Pintam Derebail was inaugurated by Fr. Walter Pinto.
Known stage artist and a singer Mr. Clement Lobo was
comparer of the programme.

The Dance Ballet directed by Rev Dr Charles Vas SVD
was started by the song “Saraswatichea Sullsulleamni
Ubzoli-i tum mae” a song composed by Mr. J. B. Moraes.
Fausto V. D’Costa (Editor, Gulab Monthly) along with
his team welcomed the crowd by extending pan-podd
udok. Then there was a heartfelt welcome by different
communities of Konkani people in their own style of
richness. The story started at the banks of River
Saraswati which was a magnificent show by the tiny
tots with the ear pleasing music of the flow of river
Saraswati which was digitally recorded. The river
Saraswati was magic of attraction among the audience
who welcomed it with their unending and ear breaking
claps. The show then continued with the scene of
Krishna playing mischief with the gopi’s being one
among the gopi was a Konkani as recorded by Santh Nam
Dev 600 years ago as Ekli Konkani. Then came a
misfortune of distress, trouble, vexation & severe
affliction as the twelve-year drought rubbed river
Saraswati into dry and made all Konkani’s to scatter
around. The marginal among them seeked out refuge in
the coasts of Goa. Once again the Portuguese rule in
Goa forced them to leave their traditions, culture,
religion and language. Their

The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) has called for a public meeting on 31st
October at 10 am at Institute Menezes Braganza hall, Panjim to protest and
strongly condemn the undue harassment being meted out to two-wheeler riders
across Goa by the police.

The Goa police should immediately stop harassing two-wheeler riders on
village roads and state highways and as to National Highways should infact
wait for the outcome of the high level committee chaired by Transport
Minister Pandurang
Madkaikar appointed by the Government to study the helmet issue as decided
by the Goa Legislative Assembly in its last session.

We express confidence that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will find a
comprehensive solution to the helmet issue which has been haunting
two-wheeler riders for over two decades.

We appeal to Mr. Parrikar not to allow certain vested interests to misguide
him and request the Chief Minister to keep up to the categorical assurance
given by him two years ago to a delegation of MAG in the presence of
Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar and Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes
that the government would make certain exemptions to the
use of helmets especially within city limits.

The enforcement of the helmet rule has nothing to do with road safety but is
a ploy by certain vested interests in connivance with the helmet
manufacturer's lobby and now that enough helmets were sold it was hoped that
the police would stop harassment of two-wheeler riders.

The two months of the helmet drive has proved that making helmets compulsory
by itself will not minimise the number
of deaths and people will continue to die regardless of whether they were a
helmet or not as long as the Government does not take some genuine concrete
steps to deal with the root causes of accidents.

We are concerned that the police force instead of tackling other crimes are
busy challaning two wheeler riders not wearing
helmets and seeing the police pre-occupied the number day light chain
snatching by some criminals wearing helmets is on the rise.

If there is a sincere crackdown on reckless, negligent and drunken driving
the alarming rate of accidents will see a steep dive and that this has to be
coupled by improving the conditions of our roads and by curbing the rampant
corruption in the police
and transport departments.

RESPONSE TO GILBERT MENEZES' ON "DABOLIM SAFETY" OF OCT 25

Glad to hear that Dabolim Airport is safe despite the inflammable stuff
stored all around. Maybe this is par for the course for a big airport. One
follow up question: What are the "six types of aircraft" the Navy has based
there presumably for flight training purposes? Also what planes does the
Coast Guard fly at Dabolim. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

As usual, the Goan patrakars make the most
mischief for their daily bread - AlmeidaG(ji)

Parrikar denies poaching opposition MLAs
NT Staff Reporter

Panaji Oct 25: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar
today denied that he was ‘poaching’ Opposition MLAs in
order to keep himself in power.

He was reacting to certain comments made by the state
Governor, Mr S C Jamir in an interview with a national
English daily with regard to the induction of Mr
Isidore Fernandes into the Bharatiya Janata Party. The
newspaper quoted Mr Jamir as saying, “I have
specifically told the CM not to make a mockery of
democracy and had warned him that if he continues the
unholy politics as seen in Poinguinim... I will
certainly dissolve the House.”

Mr Parrikar told The Navhind Times: “The Governor was
made to reply to a loaded question.”

Mr Jamir had told in his interview: “I have strong
opinions on political horsetrading and will not
tolerate such moves and will then have to dissolve the
House.” Mr Parrikar denied any such moves and said
that his government was “constitutionally very strong”
and would easily complete the rest of its tenure.

Mr Parrikar said Mr Fernandes had declared his
intention of leaving the Congress party in the first
week of August and he joined the BJP on August 20,
which had provided sufficient time for the Congress
leaders to convince him.

“The fact that they failed to convince Mr Fernandes
during the two week period clearly shows that there
were serious differences between him and the Congress
party,” Mr Parrikar said.

“Under such circumstances, how can anyone blame the
BJP for forcing Mr Fernandes to leave the Congress
Party?” he said. According to him the BJP can no more
guarantee a party ticket to any Opposition MLA if he
resigns and wishes to join the BJP.

Mr Parrikar said he had never used a particular modus
operandi for his political move more than once. “My
style of functioning is that I operate in a different
way each time.”

He said the Bommai case allowed for expression of
faith in the state assembly and ensured that the floor
of the House was the most appropriate place for
testing the strength of a government. As such, the
judgment was in favour of his government, he said.

Mr Parrikar said the Governor had reacted to a
question which was structured on a premise which was
completely untrue. “Mr Jamir expressed his anguish
regarding the situation,” he said.

CM Parrikar’s Four Eventful Years
by Nandkumar Kamat

THE fifth year of the Chief Minister of Goa, Mr
Manohar Parrikar begins from today. The past four
years have been interestingly eventful. Mr Parrikar
has made his moves very well. The CM is still
constrained by not having a fully BJP government. The
present alliance with the UGDP and the MGP is a
coalition of temporary convenience. It is not based on
any common minimum programme. The picture has changed
after the NDA lost power in Delhi. Now the loyalties
of neo-BJP elements would be very suspect.

Mr Parrikar has set for himself certain personal goals
to achieve in his remaining tenure, till May 2007. He
has his eyes on the pages of future history. His first
year of rule saw the dissolution of the assembly and
his brief role as the caretaker CM. The second year
witnessed political compromises with the UGDP and the
MGP. The last two years have been very turbulent with
numerous controversies, which could have unnerved any
other person in his place. Initially Mr Parrikar
appeared hypersensitive to the public criticism, which
is unavoidable in politics. He used to get irritated
by baseless allegations. The media also built up his
image as a self-righteous, intelligent ‘know all and
end all’ politician.

In party circles he reportedly created an air of
intellectual superiority and invincibility. He showed
that he is second to none in physical and intellectual
endurance. The opposition shied away from his
challenges to debate certain issues openly on public
platforms. He was exceptionally brilliant inside the
legislative assembly and handled the business of the
government very efficiently winning the appreciation
and loyalty from his cabinet colleagues and MLAs. He
is the first CM to have read all-important
legislations of the state. In his first two years he
trained himself about the fine aspects of
administrative matters. He could see for himself the
tremendous revenue leakage that was bleeding the state
of Goa. The opposition has never given him the credit
of increasing the state revenue without burdening the
common people. He faced the harshest criticism over
the IFFI preparations but

To,
The editor,
Herald.

Kind Attn. Vijay D'Souza

Sir,

I thank you for asking for my comments to these vital questions.
I have answered them to the best of my ability and belief.

Sincerely,

Floriano Lobo

(Q). Main achievements of Mr. Manohar Parrikar as CM.
(A).
Being a dedicated RSS ideologue, Manohar Parrikar has been singularly
successful in consolidating the Sangh Parivar's (read RSS's) agenda in Goa
to a great extent by saffronising Goa's State Administration, and he
continues to do so.
He has shown Goa Congress Party's rule of almost 2 decades in bad light
through cosmetic facelifts at exorbitant costs that Goa can ill afford,
putting Goa in a severe debt trap through an all out and frivolous spending
spree i.e. IFFI, Sky Bus, DSSS, Cyberage etc.
He has succeeded in retaining his chair against all odds by playing
proverbial Santa Claus to Congressmen and others who are severely
compromised through their past deeds of commission and omission.

(Q). His drawbacks.
(A).
Over confident of himself, in that he believes that being an IIT'an, he is
all knowing. That only he knows, what is best for Goa. Has no respect for
democracy. He is no Goan.
A bad listener, arrogant, impulsive, flip-floping in his decision making, a
bully i.e. behaves like a kid who has always had his way.
He is the harbinger of controlled sycophancy in the State Administration and
State policing machinery.

(Q). What has hampered his growth.
(A). His attitude of not taking the people of Goa into confidence. He pushes
people instead of taking the people along with him. He has no capacity to
understand that he will be crushed when the people move backwards. Only
sycophants get his ear.

(Q). Has he taken Goa to the 22nd century.
(A). Far from it. In the past 4 years, Manohar Parrikar has helped to take
Goa backwards into the 21th century, the 'Hitler Way'.

(Q). Does he have the potential to be the PM?
(A). A preposterous question, indeed. Anybody can become the PM who has a
balanced head on his/her shoulders. This seat is for Statesmen. Communals
have no place on this seat. It is enough that Vajpayee-Advani combination
have soiled these prestigious top two seats of our SECULAR Nation. Will
India allow this to happen again is a million dollar question.

All said and done, I wish Mr. Manohar Parrikar well.

RESPONSE TO GILBERT MENEZES' OF OCT 24 ON "HARRIERS"
I was glad to note that "nearly" all (but not "all"?) the Harrier crashes
have been at sea from the decks of aircaft carriers and that you have
written "extensively" about civilian crashes at Dabolim (including
Harriers?) in Goanet. What is your brief assessment, if any, of the
"safety" of Dabolim from the aeronautical standpoint? I look forward to
familiarising myself with your previous postings in due course. Thanks.

the goan culture or rather the goan christian way of life is almost five
centuries old. pesonally,i believe that the culture of goans resident in
goa is slightly different from the way of life of goans whether they are (
or were ) living in bombay, poona, east africa, gulf and now in western
urban centres like london and toronto.

in goa, although it is fast fading away, the christian way of life was
centered in a family. a mother took pride that she has three or four sons
who are respectively given to god ( priest), to people ( teacher and doctor
) and to the devil ( lawyer ). ultimately it is the priest ( even if he was
her third or fourth son) whose decision was the final word in the family
matters.

the goans away from goa syndrome, was probably started with the short
occupation of goa by the british troops during the napoleonic wars in the
early 19th century. it was napoleon himself who said that the army marches
on its stomach only for the british troops to realize that goans could bake
bread ( and were adept at other !home! departments ) unlike their hindu
counterparts in the rest of india. from that point in time onwards, goans
started migrating to bombay, poona etc. the main migration was originally
from bardez concelho where there too many people and too few paddyfields.

the humble goan educated his children in the cosmopolitan surroundings of
bombay etc. to become ordinary clerks in the second generation, the latter
produced professionals like doctor, surgeon, university professors,
engineers etc. and the fourth generation produced state governor, police
commissioner, chief of armed forces, archbishops and cardinals.

the rest , as they say, is the history in the making.

The state of the art, wire-stayed bridge between Aldona mainland and Corjuem
over River Mapusa was load-tested on Sunday night. Twelve ten-tonner
trucks, loaded with huge concrete blocks were parked in two rows for a
couple of hours on the Corjuem side of the twin columns from which the
bridge is suspended. The bridge has passed the test of strength.

The approach roads have been black topped... and so is the wear coat of the
bridge. The central and lateral white lines have been painted. The foot path
is paver finished and the whole bridge has been painted. The bridge is ready
like a bride at the "Ross" ceremony onthe eve of the wedding day. Traffic
was also stopped for the day...just as the groom is kept away on this day.

Get set to see the Corjuem Fort and celebrate 150 years of the Corjuem
chapel with a bang.

Viva.

Hello Gabriel,

The Carmona strafing is from my own experience while
visiting neighbouring Orlim. I have also seen conveys
of indian troops passing in that area. With the amkam

GOA'S PREMIER WHOLESALE FISH-MARKET, AT MARGAO, NEEDS URGENT ATTENTION

By Fermino Faleiro
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Goa's premier wholesale fish-market, spread over some 10,000 square metres
beside the National Highway 17, in Margao near the KTC Bus Stand, is itself
becoming something of a nuisance.

One comes across a foul smell and leftover fish seen around almost anytime
of the day. Then, there's the pollution caused to the River Sal, the
mounting opsition by Madel residents and, to add to the problem, the narrow
approach road of 1.5 kms from the highway to the fish market. It would be
easier for the camel to pass through the eye of needle, rather than for a
man to reach the market by only connecting narrow road.

During the peak hours of the early morning, the rush of business vehicles
ranging from four-wheelers to two-wheelers are seen parked senselessly on
either sides of road, thus making the flow of traffic difficult.

Even the police posted to regulate the trafic seems to be helpless.

"We have approached the authorities to ease out the problems faced by our
association and the general public alike, but nothing seems to be moving,"
said All Goa Wholesale Fish Market Associations president Joaquim D'Mello.

Samir,
As former scooterists, we tilted our scooters one way and then the other.
The scooter always started! At Nasa, our intrepid Goan visitor would have
asked that the vehicle be tilted, often, a little more than 45 degrees, but
on both sides of the vehicle to be absolutely sure of a good start in the
presence of so much publicity! Incidentally, the guy was a Sikh in earlier
accounts--but he could have moved down to Goa more recently!

Forwarded message:
THE GOA HINDU ASSOCIATION
Estd. 1919 Reg,1940
'GOMANTDHAM' 358, Dr. Bhadkamkar Marg, MUMBAI - 400 007.
Introduction:
The Goa Hindu Association, a premiere organization of Goans in Mumbai was
established in Mumbai in 1919 as a Charitable Trust by a few Goans dedicated
to social service. The main aim was to encourage education among Goans as
it was lacking in Goa. Over a period of time the activities expanded to
include Medical division, Cultural division, Library and the latest addition
to it is the Sneha Mandir to take care of the senior citizens along with a
Hospital to admit these senior citizens when in need.

The Scholarships:
Even to day scholarships are given to the needy students every year
aggregating five lakhs of rupees. It helps the students to persue higher
education in India.

Seven students are selected every year and adopted for higher studies till
they complete the education.

Prizes aggregating 3 lakhs of rupees are given annually to students showing
creditable performance in the exams

The cultural activities:
The Goa Hindu Association hosted lot of dramas conveying social message to
the society. At the moment this activity is being held in abeyance due to
certain technical reasons.
At present the Association holds three Orations every year.
1: To felicitate young Goan writer or poet. 2: To promote literature. 2: To
promote
cultural activities among goans.

The Sneha Mandir.
This is built in Goa and houses several senior citizens for a nominal
maintenance fee.The Hostel is full and there is a waiting list. In the same
campus there are medical facilities on a day to day basis and also there is
a Hospital where the senior citizens are admitted for treatment. Lot of
cultural and social activities are held every year in this place along with
medical camps.

The Library.
From the beginning the Association had established a Library which has grown
very large over a period of time. It has fiction books, periodicals,
magazines and as of to day more than three thousand books of reference on
various topics.Titles include History, Poetry,Culture, Arts,Drama, Music,
Religion etc.

The Association also has published several books pertaining to literature,
research, culture etc by eminent Goans.

The Appeal
Purpose: To preserve the books of reference so that they can be used by
anyone anywhere for doing research or for writing thesis.

At present the books are kept in wooden cupboards in non air conditioned
rooms and are getting damaged.
It is proposed to establish a computer department and to get all the books
systematically recorded in the computer. It is proposed to establish a
website of the Association so that these books are available for reference
by any one all over the world. Eventually the plan is to get these books
recorded fully in the computer
so that access becomes easy and the books are also preserved.
The preliminary expenses are estimated to be around Rupees 5 to 7 Lakhs. To
start the ball rolling I have myself already donated Rupees One lakh to
start the project.

Donations to the Association are eligible for tax relief under section 80G
of the Income Tax Act. The certificate number is DIT (E)/MC/80G/1220/2001.
We have opened a separate account for the purpose of this project.
Herewith I request all beneficiaries and well wishes of Goa Hindu
association to support this worthy project by generous donations.

Cheques/Drafts may please be drawn in faour of "Goa Hindu
Association-Computer section.) Please send the draft to me at the following
address.
Dr.P.S.Ramani, 710, Vaidya villa, Road No.4, Parsi colony,Dadar, Mumbai 400

PANAJI, OCTOBER 24: Goa Governor S.C. Jamir today threatened to dissolve the >Assembly
if the BJP government in the state continues to poach on Opposition MLAs.

As I have said before, resignation of an MLA from a party, and then fighting
elections on another party is the right way to go about things. It is not
a violation of anti-defection or any other law.

yes, the exchange of money is illegal. Opposition should try to get evidence of
that; in fact, if they can get evidence of even money distributed prior to
elections among voters, they may be able to get the election countermanded, I
think. I wonder why the opposition did not follow that strategy.

If the governor dismisses the house due to poaching, I doubt if the court
will uphold it.

Samir Kelekar

In the Indian Express of date:

http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story.php?content_id=57632

PANAJI, OCTOBER 24: Goa Governor S.C. Jamir today threatened to dissolve the Assembly
if the BJP government in the state continues to poach on Opposition MLAs.

In an exclusive interview to The Indian Express, amid celebration in the ruling
circles of completing four years in power, Jamir said: ‘‘I have strong opinions on
political horsetrading and will not tolerate such moves and will then have to dissolve
the house.’’

Rumours of two more Congress MLAs on the verge of resigning and contesting as BJP
candidates in the by-elections had been fuelled by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s
statements before the media.

However, the chief minister today said he had not spoken of two Congress MLAs willing
to quit their party. He said he would think of it only if Congress rebels contacted
him. ‘‘However, I can’t assure them of BJP tickets,’’ he said.

Jamir said the chief minister had been warned. ‘‘I have specifically told the CM not
to make a mockery of democracy and had warned him that if he continues the unholy
politics as seen in Poingunim (where a Congress MLA resigned amidst allegations of
financial incentives provided by the ruling party), I will certainly dissolve the
house.’’

So far, three Opposition MLAs have joined the ruling party.
Parrikar, Jamir said, had said he was unaware of the poaching. ‘‘How can the CM be
ignorant of this?’’ Jamir said.

The legal implication of the Governor’s threat involves invoking Article 356 of the
Constitution which involves the Bommai judgment. Politically though, it could bring
about a re-configuration in the state.

‘‘I have my ways,’’ Jamir said. ‘‘I have constitutional authority to ensure that
horsetrading and mockery of democracy does not recur.’’

The Governor also rubbished doubts raised by a section of the audio-visual media of
his continuance in Goa and his imminent transfer to Tamil Nadu, saying he is here to
stay.

Sources at Raj Bhavan confirmed to The Indian Express that the Governor had spoken to
the Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and was assured of his continuance as Governor
of Goa.

I fully agree with Fred "Just because other forms of gambling have got

I admit Matka can have terrible consequences not only on society but on

Underdogs rule the roost at Ambedkar
NILANJAN DATTA
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2004 12:40:44 AM ]

NEW DELHI: Is the footballing talent in Bengal, long the nursery of the game
in India, on the decline? It seems so.

The 29-times champion, whose playing XI comprised of all National Football
League players and were all Bengalis. But they couldn't beat Services who
fielded Jawans from the three armed forces for whom state leagues are only
competition exposures. In fact, many do not play even the local leagues.

The underdogs rang exit bells for the giants in the 59th Indian Oil Santosh
Trophy on Sunday. R Rajesh (45th) and Shaji D'Silva (51st) scored for
Services while Dipendu Biswas (63rd) reduced from the spot after Mehtab
Hossain was brought down.

What, meanwhile, happened to Goa was even more dire. They had five current
national players in their ranks but were routed by Punjab 5-1. The scoreline
could have been worse. The Punjab-da-puttars were generous.

The Goans were swept away by Gurjit Singh Atwal's four strikes after
Harvinder Singh (19th) had given Punjab the lead. Climax Lawrence pulled one
back.

About the other match, the Goa coach Macus Pacheco was so shattered that he
refused to talk to the media after his team's drubbing. While the two
shockers questioned the status quo in Indian football, they also highlight
the positive trend of talent emerging from non-traditional quarters. It is,
now, upto All India Football Federation to tap the sources for good.

But will they be able to?

Canada opens its arms for immigrants
ISHANI DUTTAGUPTA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2004 01:49:24
AM ]
Canada is increasingly seen as an ideal destination
for business immigrants in view of the political
stability, good standard of living, legal system and
proximity to the US.

For Indians, the added advantage is the historical
links that Indian immigrants have with the country.
Permanent residents are granted access to almost the
same medical, educational and social benefits that are
offered to Canadian citizens.

To support the development of a strong and prosperous
Canadian economy, the country welcomes three classes
of business immigrants: investors, entrepreneurs and
self-employed persons.

Investors must make an investment of around $400,000
that is used by the provinces for economic development
and job creation.

Entrepreneurs must own and manage a business in Canada
that creates employment for Canadian citizens or
permanent residents. Self-employed persons must have
the ability to employ themselves and make significant
contributions to cultural activities, athletics or
farming.
