ONE OFF: WHERE CHILDREN LEARN TO LOVE BOOKS By Reema Kamat Imagine this. You are a worm. A squirming, wriggling one. Only, you’re the good kind. Your domain is the enchanted forest. It has shelves for paths that you can walk on and books for trees that you can clamber on. Books in all shapes, sizes, colours, and ages. With leaves (pretty good pun, aye? Leaves of a tree, leaves of a book, get it?) of words that weave exciting stories to enthral you. And all you want to do is get straight at them. That’s right young sir or madam, you’re what they call, a bookworm. Or at least, that is what Sujata and Elaine want you to be. Started on 10 September 2005, Bookworm is an exclusive children's library that seeks to cater to the reading needs of kids right from the age when they learn to say their first word, if parents so desire and the kid can so accomplish. Founders Sujata Noronha and Elaine Mendonsa firmly and fondly believe that the reading habit is part of the essential grounding that every child should receive right from the formative ages. To be taught to read well when young is to be well read for life, they say in agreement. Their mission reiterates this: to provide a welcoming environment, which encourages a love of reading and learning. In furthering their passionate endeavour, Bookworm aims to develop a collection of library materials appropriate for the age group of at least one to 13, keeping reading levels, interests and needs in mind. The child will also be taught to access, use and evaluate information sources that are appropriate for them to know. The idea is to promote reading as well as literacy, says Elaine. In doing so, Bookworm has four sections that divide the availability of these requirements; a lending library, a reference room, an activity space as well as a reading nook. The duo also plans to design and conduct programmes like storytelling, reading aloud, creative activities, finger plays, puppet theatre, as well as workshops around the same and more. More advanced readers can indulge in book discussion groups, script writing, poetry composition and other such constructive activities. They also plan to encourage the creative process early through innovative play like and the cognitive process through puzzles, games and much more! To find out what the much more is, do pay a visit immediately to Bookworm -- where children learn to love books. Bookworm is situated: 2nd Floor, Bluebelle, Tamba Colony, St. Inez, Panaji, Goa. Call 982322BOOK (9823222665 in case you hadn't figured). Volunteers interested in working with children or helping out with activities are welcomed with an excited squiggly tail! [Goanet] Re: Da Vinci Code': Christians catch the fundamentalist
Cornel George, I very much agree with the both of you. So I don't have anything interesting to add by contradicting. But I would like to add to why I think Christians are more prone to evangelisation. Right from Catechism, when we are too young to make an informed choice, we are brainwashed into thinking that our Hindu and Muslim friends are destined to hell, and we should pray for their lost souls and help to save their souls. This continues in adulthood when we pray for the pagan brothers sisters during the Let-us-Pray section of the mass, and the thoughts we imbibe during childhood require a certain strength to shrug off. This arrogance that Christianity is the best (and only) religion and everyone should follow it to be saved is almost inbred. Most tend to keep this thought dormant while engaging with non-christian brothers and sisters, a few reject it, and a few enlightened and pro-active ones become evangelists. Now what I find the most repulsive form of evangilisation is that practiced my a FEW missionaries. They follow the policy of 'Food in the left hand, and a Bible in the right', either both or nothing. This was confirmed during the various stories* that came out during the voluntary efforts of many groups post the Tsunami in south India. Helpless people had no choice but to convert. Jesus taught of an UNCONDITIONAL love. Yet these misguided missionaries believe they are doing the work of Jesus. To add fuel to the fire, Pope John Paul II said prior to the millenium: just as in the first millennium the cross was planted on the soil of Europe, and in the second on that of the Americas and Africa, we can pray that in the third Christian millennium, a great harvest of faith will be reaped in this vast and vital continent of Asia. (Reference links* to this and events that followed this time are found under my sign off) Defenders argue that Evagelisation is not the same as forced/alluring conversions, and is merely a freedom to express ones thoughts about religion. While this is legally true, I still find it utterly distasteful. Now the current Pope Benedict XVI recently commented that India should not oppose conversion as every one has the fundamental right to choose his religion. Im afraid, I have to agree with him on this. But at the same time, I hate it when an attractive woman stops me in the middle of the street, and asks me for a minute of my time, and tries to convince me on how to make Jesus my best friend (on the basis of my goatie which often gives the impression that I am Muslim). Id rather she ask me for my number. Why cannot she respect that I could be a Muslim and leave me alone? Which is what brings me to the question I posed: Although we have no Legal right to oppose fundamentalism, do we have the moral right? Can we think of a way to legally suppress fundamentalism of all religions, including evangelisation. Or perhaps, as George suggests, there should be a moratorium set up in good faith. I happen to think it is entirely wrong in any religion. However, people should be free to join any religion voluntarily if they choose to. I would dearly like to hear an alternative to the view we two seem to share on this issue. Among others, would it be possible to get Cardinal Ivan Dias to provide us his informed view on Catholic evangelization for our benefit? Further, would our hard working Goanet moderators try to get Cardinal Ivan on line even if only for once on this issue? Cornel _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] Teaching, Educating and Learning
Teaching, Educating and Learning Do not let your schooling come in the way! By Miguel Braganza The Higher Secondary School results are just out and the SSC results will soon follow. By the end of this month, what will be later remembered as the best years of our lives will be over for many thousand individuals in Goa and for millions of students throughout India. The school years are the formative years. Yet, the least attention is paid to school education in our mad rush for admission to professional courses. My guru for school level education is Fr.C.P.Varkey, SJ. As the name suggests, he is a Jesuit priest of Malayali extraction. He has risen above such parochial contexts to experience education and write a book entitled Gently and Firmly. Priced just Rs.40/- and available at any St.Paul's Books store [there is one near Bombay Bazaar on 18 June Road, Panaji], this book should be read by every teacher, school administrator and School Board member at the beginning of every academic year. Parents of school-going children would also do well to read it. Those who have read the book, first published in 1995 and reprinted six times since, have benefited tremendously form it. I have had the occasion to quote from this book to my teachers, who now teach my children in the same school in almost the same way .three decades later! There is one change for the better: the corporal punishment has decreased considerably. This is no mean achievement in an all-boys' school. The introduction to the book is simple, This book is written with only one goal: to help schools and teachers bring out the best in the children who come to their schools. Equally simple is the message on the back cover. What a child becomes during his/her life in the school depends, to a great extent, on his/her teachers. The teachers have a greater responsibility then just completing the 'portion' of the syllabus allotted to them to teach in class. The teachers make or break the child who is their captive audience, spectator, hostage or even victim for the better part of the waking hours of each day. I am member of two school-linked Net-groups created by a friend to keep former classmates and fellow school students in touch, wherever they may be and whatever their present station in life. Ever so often the 'thread' picks up discussion about teachers, their strengths, their contribution to the learning process and character building, foibles, and sometimes of their obvious sadism couched in the garb of discipline. There is a teacher who would lift up little boys by locking his hands over either ear of the unfortunate student, another who would insert a pencil between the index and the middle finger of the student and crush the little fingers together around the pencil. Guantanamo Bay detention centre, Siberia, Tihar and other camps for hardened criminals might have faced investigation for similar human rights violations. In schools, no one even bothers to acknowledge such things can happen, let alone accept that it happens in their own school. The difference between discipline and sheer terror tactics is lost on many a self-proclaimed educationist or school administrator. Discipline is the euphemism that serves them well. Many of my school mates, who have had the occasion to be 'disciplined', try to emulate Mark Twain who wrote thus, I never let my schooling interfere with my education. Others just repeat the process when they become teachers or administrators. Fr. C. P. Varkey quotes a Chinese proverb, It is not the cry, but the flight of the wild duck that leads the flock to fly and follow. No student of my school will remember the hugely acclaimed and oft repeated Jesuit Education Paradigm [JEP] that emphasizes that 'the student is at the center of education. He may not even remember physics, chemistry, geography or even the exercises of mass P.T. in school. Mention the name of a teacher and at least one episode or characteristic or nickname of the teacher will spill out spontaneously. It is the flight of the duck, not his or her teaching or screams that make the students to follow. It is the example. Many of our teachers are waddling, nay, sitting ducks. How can they inspire their students to fly? There is an information explosion. With the advent of the internet and the increase in affluence one has an access to endless amount of information. Today, the difficulty is in screening information for what one needs, collating it and making sense of it all. The 'learning by rote' system of instruction [as distinct from education], the emphasis on memory instead of discernment and application of knowledge, prepares the student for nothing that a computer cannot do better and at a lower cost. An IT professional who has to spell check through an application for leave of absence, a sub-editor who does not know the difference between 'accept' and 'except' when the choice is offered by
[Goanet] OUR LAW KEEPERS HAVE TURNED OUT TO BE LAW BREAKERS
At a time where the crime barometer is on a steep ascending mode, an independent police force would have been a solace. But with political interference in the selection, promotion and transfer of our law enforcement officers, the police are obviously unable to deliver. There should be an ongoing effort to instil discipline in the police cadres and minimal, if not zero tolerance towards indiscipline and misconduct. In Mumbai, rank indiscipline in the force is a matter of concern as the law keepers have turned out to be law breakers. The Mumbai as many as 42 police men have been booked for various offences in 2005 alone. From forgery, cheating, tampering of evidence and impersonation, to thefts, dacoity, rash driving, outraging the modesty of a woman, assault, attempt to murder and murder, these 42 policemen have outstandingly excelled in it all. [Goanet] Re: The right of Christians in India to prostelize (revised)
The author of the following post agrees with me. Yet there is little in the first paragraph of the post with which I agree. That makes a bulletin board interesting. The fact that any institution or government or country last for a long time suggest that it was / is valuable, useful, productive, efficient and had some solid foundation. Any business built on spin and hype, (or government support and military might or intrigue or feel good topic d' jour) would exists ONLY (for less than) 1-2 centuries. So I do NOT agree that in the main the Church is into spin and marketing. When it has, the endeavor has not lasted long - at the most a few centuries. And in the end it has invariably backfired. I do NOT agree that the church is a feel good organization. If anyone believes so, perhaps the individual has to rethink their concepts of the Catholic Church and Jesus Christ. To use my simile again, the religion and the Church is like the medical field. Medicine had, has and will continue to have false theories from time to time on various medical subjects. There are some corrupt physicians and many hospitals are run like a business. Yet, shenanigans do not last for long. No one makes the point that medicine did not and does not have a valid role in society over the centuries. Anyone who recommends to others or does not see a medical doctor for a serious illness because of past errors in medicine, badly needs to see a doctor, if nothing for more, at least to have their head examined.:=)) Kind Regards, GL Marlon Menezes I agree with Gilbert. There should not be any bans on conversions in India or anywhere. Religion (as Gilbert correctly described with his example of Christianity in France), like any business, is all about spin and marketing. It does not have to be based on facts, but is focused on making the customer feel good. Whether Jesus was god, human, illegitmate, married etc does not matter. The fact is that the Christian church has been able to maintain a large base of very happy customers over the millenia. In fact the church has been so successful, there are so many versions of it today, each with its own brand of christianity and Jesus Christ. The catholic church for its part, is fundamentally a very successful 2000 year old business, and is a testament to the vision of its founder father (no pun intended) and its CEOs that followed Jesus. [Goanet] GOA FOR A CHEAP BEER
http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=17140623method=fullsiteid=94762headline=goa-for-a-cheap-beer--name_page.html GOA FOR A CHEAP BEER GOA and Bulgaria are the cheapest places to go on holiday, a recent survey by tour giant Thomas Cook reveals. However Brazil, a new package holiday destination for this summer, is the second cheapest destination worldwide - and a bargain for beer drinkers. A pint in Brazil costs just 79p, compared to £1 in Goa, 90p in Bulgaria and £1.75 in Spain. Mainland Spain is now cheaper than in previous years. After the introduction of the euro in 1999, Spain, Italy and Greece became more expensive than non-euro destinations, leading to huge growth in popularity for Bulgaria and Turkey. But this year Spain is the second cheapest European destination with Majorca in third place. The cheapest places to visit this summer worldwide are on the right with European destinations on the left (2005 positions are in brackets). -- DIE DULCI FREURE, DEV BOREM KORUM. Gabe Menezes. [Goanet] Just curious
I must thank the gentleman who brought the 10th wedding anniversary of Cecil and Beatrice to our attention on goanet. Cecil has two well known e-mail IDs and yet the subsequent wishing on goanet that followed escapes my simple mind. I am aware that curiosity killed a cat. But it is also true that curiosity is what gave us some incredible modern inventions. Just for curiosity's sake, could anyone of those who wished Mr and Mrs Pinto on goanet tell me why they preferred to make their personal greetings on a public domain despite having his personal mail? Please, it's nothing beyond plain curiosity. [Goanet] Goan links science, spirituality by OBE
Goan links science, spirituality by OBE HERALD NEWS BUREAU PANJIM, MAY 26 - A Goan engineering student at Florida International University in USA is set to present on the controversial out-of-body experience at the 25th Meeting of the Society for Scientific Exploration at Utah Valley State College, USA, on June 8. Nelson Abreu is clearly not a typical electrical engineering student. Outside formal university pursuits, he has been researching the out-of-body experience (OBE) and other phenomena that cross-traditional academic boundaries since high school. Nelson, who was born in Lisbon, traces his roots to Goa, where his father, Magno Abreu, hails from Chorao and mother, Lilia Correia, is from Bardez. A Miami Herald Silver Knight award recipient in 2000, Abreu is attempting to bring the scientific rigour and technical prowess of engineering to questions usually relegated to the clergy, mystics, or New Age aficionados. I cannot mock people who think their Near-Death Experiences (NDE's) and Out-of-Body Experiences (OBE's) are real, because I have experienced the OBE myself. This experience feels as real as the normal waking state, said Nelson. However, the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research (PEAR) Laboratory intern is the first to concede that it takes much more than that to prove the experience is not merely a vivid mental construct of physiological origin. Since 1998, Abreu and a few hundred colleagues throughout the world have been studying and developing techniques to project, as they call it, by will. The objective is to develop a way for scientists to have many of these experiences themselves. Science can only begin to understand the OBE when researchers are able to repeatedly study the occurrence first hand, he says. At the 25th Meeting of the Society for Scientific Exploration in Orem, Utah, the young investigator will present his Punctuated Relaxation Technique and discuss how developments such as this one may help advance a science of subjective phenomena that is not constrained by physical limits. Abreu speculates that the out-of-bod experience allows us to glimpse into the multidimensional universe akin to predictions of modern physical theories like string theory. Investigators like Nelson Abreu think the out-of-body experience is at least as revolutionary as the telescope. Through personal experiences, he predicts scientists will be able to understand phenomena that are now considered paranormal and the millennial question of survival of the consciousness after death. Such futuristic experiments are already underway. Take the Image Target experiments of Rodrigo Medeiros - another electrical engineer - and Patricia Sousa, an international lecturer on the NDE. Participants are asked to describe a picture randomly selected by a computer locked away at the offices of the International Academy of Consciousness in South Miami. Though participants rarely make it to the target location, the observations we get can be uncanny, says Medeiros, down to photographic precision. http://oheraldo.in/node/14303 ~(^^)~ Avelino _ Do not post admin requests to the list. [Goanet] Goanet Reader: One off -- where children learn to love books (by Reena Kamat)
[Goanet] CA/PS XX: THE MILITARY'S TRUE COLOURS
http://www.voiceofsandiego.org/site/apps/nl/content2.asp?c=euLTJbMUKvHb=412 359ct=2494735 It's Miramar By ROB DAVIS Voice Staff Writer Tuesday, May 23, 2006 An airport authority committee chose Marine Corps Air Station Miramar as the best site for a new international airport to replace Lindbergh Field, putting the authority one step away from finalizing the proposal voters will see in November. The final say belongs to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority's full nine-member board, which will settle the issue at its June 5 meeting. Their decision, spurred by projections that show the city's existing airport will reach its capacity sometime after 2015, will culminate the three-year process that the authority was created to bring to fruition. The heralded solution to San Diego's project air capacity crunch is by no means assured. The Pentagon has vehemently objected to sharing land at the base, and a 1996 federal law prohibits commercial aircraft from using it. And to date, none of San Diego's congressional representatives have shown any support for a commercial airport at Miramar. The uncertainty surrounding the base is reflected in the draft language the committee recommended for the November ballot initiative. It became clear Monday that Miramar may never house a joint-use commercial airport, even if voters approve the move Nov. 7. The 3-1 approval capped off a contentious meeting in a contentious process, where board members openly criticized each other's reasoning. But then there was the Navy, the Marine Corps and board member Tony Young. Officials from both branches rehashed their objections to sharing their bases with commercial aircraft. Between the two -- Capt. Mike Allen, chief of staff at Navy Region Southwest, and Lt. Col. Duane Pinney, Miramar's safety director -- the words unacceptable or unacceptably were used 17 times. That prompted Young, who also serves on San Diego's City Council, to chide a lack of cooperation, saying the military needed to be more open and honest. What I heard was a presentation of what can't be done, Young said. We're looking for a solution here in San Diego. We're growing up. We're not the military-only town we used to be. I didn't hear any recommendations of what you could do as the military. Pinney, in response: We're not paid to support the board. - The military mentality is something else! The trick is to find who they will take orders from. That's all they know. Cheers. _ Do not post admin requests to the list. Goanet mailing list (Goanet@goanet.org)
[Goanet] Japanese Catholics donate statues of St Francis Xavier to Goa and Malacca
Japanese Catholics donate statues of St Francis Xavier to Goa and Malacca AsiaNews.it 27 May, 2006 To mark the 500th anniversary of the saint's birth, a Catholic association of Kagoshima has commissioned a group of bronze statues to recall the encounter of the protector of missionaries with the Japanese people. Kagoshima (AsiaNews/JCW) - Members of the St Francis Xavier Memorial Association in Kagoshima, in the north of the island of Kyûshû, have donated a set of bronze statues to Malaysia and India. The aim is to commemorate the first encounter between St Francis Xavier and a Japanese man named Yajiro. Yajiro, a young man from Kagoshima, met the protector of missionaries in Malacca in 1548. Fascinated by his faith and his personality, he decided to follow him and to help him in his travels in Japan. Traditionally, this encounter marks the meeting between the Church and the Japanese people. The association decided to have the statues sculpted and donated in 1999, when the Church in Malacca sent a letter to Kagoshima, asking if they could celebrate together the 450th anniversary of the Jesuit saint's arrival in Japan. There was also an expressed desire to deepen the exchange between the two churches, united by St Francis. Members of the association visited Malacca in 2005 and in December of the same year, decided to commission the statues to send to Goa too, where the mortal remains of the saint are preserved. They are exact copies of a group of statues found in Xavier Park in Kagoshima. Toshihiro Nanaeda, chairperson of the committee, said: A week-long commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of St Francis Xavier will take place in Malacca and Goa: We hope we will be able to send the statues on time for this joyous celebration.
