The Editor PRESS STATEMENT

RE: BCS CONDEMNS THE ATTACK ON US MISSIONARIES AND URGES THE GOVERNMENT TO
INVESTIGATE AND ARREST THE 20 MISCREANTS WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS.

Dear Madam / Sir,

The Bombay Catholic Sabha [BCS] condemns the unwarranted and merciless
attack on the US missionaries at Malwani Village, Malad on June 11.

It has become a regular norm for communal forces to target Christian groups
on the standard pretext excuse that they are indulging in conversion. And
then physically attack such groups.

We feel the Police authorities have not been fair in handling this
sensitive situation.
Why only 2 out of the 20 culprits were arrested is a question that needs
an answer.
We demand that the rest of the miscreants are arrested immediately.

Another interesting factor is why the urgency in which the Police produced
the accused in the holiday court on Sunday, June 12 and by the evening
they were released on bail. Normally in any other situation, the accused
would have been in the police custody and produced in the regular Court on
the following working day i.e. June 13. We need answers to these type of
actions by the Police Authorities.

The Chief Minister and the Home Minister should be vigilant enough to
ensure that communal forces do not rear their ugly heads to create communal
disharmony and create an atmosphere of fear among the minorities.
You are kindly requested to publish this press note in your esteemed
publication.

Thank you,
Best Regards,

India Hindu Militants Attack Christian School, Burn Effigy In Madhya Pradesh

India Hindu Militants Attack Christian School, Burn Effigy In Madhya Pradesh
(BosNewsLife Exclusive) Wednesday, 06 April 2005

By Vishal Arora, BosNewsLife New Delhi Bureau Chief

NEW DELHI, INDIA (BosNewsLife)-- Tensions were rising Wednesday, April 6, in a
key city of India's central state of Madhya Pradesh where Hindu militants
attacked a Christian school and burnt the image of a Catholic leader in
response to remarks attributed to him by a local newspaper, BosNewsLife
established.

The incident happened late Tuesday, April 5, when supporters of apparently the
Hindu nationalist movement Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), raided the
Carmel Convent School in Gwalior, a city in the northern part of Madhya
Pradesh, and burnt the effigy of Dr. John Dayal, President of the All India
Catholic Union (AICU), Catholic officials said. There were no immediate
reports of injuries.

The [attackers] also made an attempt to vandalize the school property, but
the timely intervention of the local police prevented the... incident, the
AICU added in a statement to the BosNewsLife New Delhi Bureau. They held a
meeting later in the evening and demanded an apology from the Church for the
perceived anti Hindu article and warned Christians that they would extend
their agitation to other institutions and schools in the city, the AICU
stressed.

However the local Hindi newspaper, Dainik Bhaskar, misquoted Dr. John Dayal
as saying that the church in India was against the Hindu religion, during an
April 4 press conference, said Fr. Anand Muttungal, Public Relations Officer
and Spokesperson of the Catholic Church in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, in
an interview with BosNewsLife.

HINDUNESS
On the contrary, Dr. Dayal had merely said that Christians in India were
against the ideology of Hindutva, on which the RSS is based, Muttungal
explained. Hindutva or Hinduness is a word to describe movements advocating
Hindu nationalism. The term Hindutva was coined in 1923 by Vinayak Damodar
Savarkar a Hindu nationalist whose book, Hindutva, serves as an inspiration
for the modern Hindu Nationalistic Movements, according to historians.

But we want to tell everyone here that we propagate peace, said Muttungal.
The AICU urged the Madhya Pradesh government to end the violence and
to restore the confidence and security of the small Christian community in
the city.

They have a right to burn my effigy if they will, but they no right to wreak
vengeance on innocent nuns and priests and common Christian men and women,
said Dayal in a statement. In all the last ten years or so, I have never
attacked religions. [The AICU] campaign has been against fundamentalism,
bigotry and violence... We have always made a difference between the Hindu
faith, which we honor and respect, and Hindutva...said Dayal, who was in the
region for a public meeting to pay homage to Pope John Paul II who died
Saturday, April 2.

CONCERN
There is concern among church leaders that the latest attack is part of a new
wave of violence against Christians in the area. This year a Christian prayer
meeting was reportedly attacked in the presence of police by members of the
RSS and the Bajrang Dal group in the village of Dhanora in Madhya Pradesh's
Seoni district on February 23, reported the Christian news agency Compass
Direct.

Last year on January 11, the Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh witnessed a
spate of anti-Christian violence after the body of a 10-year old girl, who had
been raped, was found in a Catholic School.

Hindu militants, who alleged the girl had been raped by Christians, attacked
churches and Christian institutions as well as houses and other properties of
Christians. Police later established that the crime was perpetrated by a Hindu.

The state government of Madhya Pradesh is ruled by the pro-Hindu Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP). Christians make up less than one percent of the state's
total population of over 60 million, according to government estimates. (Based

HINDUTVA RADICALS IN INDIA ATTACK PRAYER MEETING WHILE POLICE TAKE
LUNCH BREAK

Christians from a small Indian village will have their day in court
Monday, May 9, following a violent attack on a prayer meeting.
Members of a radical Hindu group broke up the meeting in the village
of Dhanora in central India's Madhya Pradesh state Wednesday, Feb.
23. Four Hindu men who identified themselves as members of two
extremist groups -- Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bajrang
Dal -- attacked the prayer meeting and left several Christians badly
injured while police who were assigned to guard the Christians failed
to protect them. The attack took place while the constable went to
have his lunch at about 4 p.m. Local Hindus have since pressured the
Christians to drop their complaint, threatening them with death and
burning down of their houses. Meanwhile, India's top Christian
leaders presented an unofficial white paper to Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh on Friday, March 11. The document listed more than 200
violent incidents against Christians occurring in the first 10 weeks
of this year and called on the government to protect the Christian

Christians welcome Govt promise of White paper on minorities
Budget must have funds for Christian economic empowerment

The Christian community has welcomed the Union Government's promise
to publish a White Paper on the status of minority communities and a
comprehensive law to deal with communal violence. But the community
also expects the government to have provisions in the budget for the
economic empowerment of minorities, specially the Christian
community, which is among the poorest of the poor.

In a joint statement on behalf of the largest Laity organisation the
All India Catholic Union, the inter denominational All India
Christian Council, the Satyashodkah Samaj and the Delhi-based United
Christian Action, Dr John Dayal has drawn the attention of Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram to
the budget silence on these issues.

Dr Dayal said it was good that the budget had a large component for
women and children, and a small portion of it would also benefit
Christian women. But while the Budget had provisions for the
advancement of Muslim youth, there was none for Christian youth.

The reports of the 2001 Census and our own surveys have shown the
pathetic condition of the Christian community in rural areas of
several States, and particularly of Tribal and Dalit youth professing
the Christian faith. The Rs 500 crore corpus of the national
Minorities development fund has not devolved at all on our community.
Our youth, specially Christians of Dalit origin, urgently need
institutions, scholarships and support in training in
entrepreneurship, self-employment and artisanship. There is also
growing need for hostel to bring education to many areas. All these
require infusion of state funds, apart from efforts by the community
itself.

Dr Dayal called upon the Union government to make provisions for
these segments in the current budget.

Dr Dayal quoted President Kalam's Address to parliament in which Dr
Kalam had said it was not enough for India to shine if it did not
shine for all.

Dear Friends

As you know, for the fist time since the infamous Presidential Order
of 1950, the Supreme Court is seriously seized of its implications
for the Dalit community, irrespective of religion. The protection and
fruits of various affirmative-action legislation, which include the
laws against untouchability as also provision for reservations in
education and employment, under the 1950 Order are limited to
Scheduled Castes professing the Hindu faith. In recent years,
Buddhist and Sikhs of Dalit Origin have also been extended these
rights. Muslims and Christians of Scheduled Caste origin are still
deprived of the protection of such laws. Does it deprive the Dalits
of freedom to choose their faith?

Please do come and participate in this important seminar and

[Goanet]NCM seeks ministers intervention on film 'Sins'

Film: NCM seeks Minister's intervention
By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, FEB. 23. The National Commission for Minorities today
urged the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, S. Jaipal
Reddy, to delay the release of the controversial film, Sins, till the
concerns of the Christian community ? which is objecting to certain
portions of it ? are addressed.

The NCM chairman, Tarlochan Singh, wrote to Mr. Reddy requesting
him to stop the release of the film for a few days and get it
examined at your level in order to satisfy the sentiments of the
Christian minority community. The NCM decided to intervene in the
matter after the Archbishop of Delhi, Vincent M. Concessao, lodged a
complaint with the Commission about some portions in the film.

Mr. Singh said the complaint was that the film hurt the sentiments of
Christians.

With similar complaints being sent to the Commission against many
serials and films by other minority communities, the NCM has decided
to meet the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification
(CBFC). The NCM, he said, had organised a similar meeting with the
then Chairperson of CBFC three years ago and secured an assurance
that portions which offended the sentiments of different communities
would be deleted.

Catholics in Mumbai have over the past week raised objections to film-
maker Vinod Pande's `attempt' to sensationalise the so-called
fictional sexual escapades of a priest in Sins, due for release on
Friday. Their contention was that the portrayal of an ordained priest
in such light would hurt the sentiments of Christians.

Dear Gilbert Lawrencebab,
With reference to the film SINS by Vinod Pande, I beg to disagree with

[BCS]...jc

VOICE OF THE EXPLOITED (VOTE) speaks:
Whilst I appreciate GL to take a stand and show solidarity to the cause
taken up by the Bombay Catholic Sabha and All India Catholic Union for a
move to ban SINS, depicting a priest in bad light wherein pornography
involving a priest is displayed, I would like to clarify why this action
was necessary.

It was not our intention merely to ban SINS but to convey a strong
message to all the so-called neo-Art film makers, including Vinod Pandey
who always take us for granted, not to meddle in religion and belittle our
cause(s) but to withdraw the film and review the same without the priest
and the Cross; not to sell pornography by slighting one community/religion,
not to communalise, not to triviliase our contributions to the nation, not
to pollute the society at large with amoral values as against moral values
taught by Christians and imbibed by Christians and people of other faiths,
etc. etc. GL rightly said, But if no one stands-up, then the silence
suggest consent, agreement, accord, endorsement. Silence is also
considered as one of the deadly sins, which has resulted in amorality on a
global scale. Our cause has been duly endorsed by Bishops Bosco, Percy,
Agnelo and Cardinal Ivan Dias.

We had a protest dharna at Churchgate Station at 5 pm on 23/2, wherein
several parish organisations, including organisations of other
denominations, clergy, laity, etc. came on a common platform highlighting
this issue. MP Eknagh Gaekwad, MLA Anne Shekhar and Corporator Vinod
Shekhar also joined us in solidarity who supported this cause. This issue
has been covered by local newspapers few regional TV channels.
Incidentally, we have moved the Bombay High Court for a ban on the film,
SINS and is expected to be heard today, Thursday, 24/2 at 1 pm.

Goa governor S C Jamir has been accused of being a rubber stamp of the
Congress after he dismissed BJP chief minister Manohar Parrikar and
installed a Congress government in Panaji. Devendra Dwivedi, a former
additional solicitor general of India and a senior Congressman, defends his
former party colleague and tells Mahendra Ved that Jamir's action is
constitutionally correct.

How do you defend Governor S C Jamir's actions in Goa?
The current controversy regarding Governor Jamir's action in dismissing a
government and installing an alternative one is most unfortunate and has
trivialised the constitutional discourse. BJP's extreme reaction reflects
both ignorance of constitutional issues involved and its track record in
denigrating the institutions of democracy, including the office of the
governor. Jamir's action is constitutionally correct and in taking the twin
action, he has performed his constitutional obligation. His decision
reflects no partisanship. What cau-ses me anxiety is that even in the 56th
year of our Republic, we find a very low degree of institutionalisation and
a near-collapse of a broad, national consensus that the Congress had sought
to develop over the years on fundamentals of the Constitution.

Did Jamir follow the rule book?
What has happened in Goa has to be viewed against the backdrop of the
constitutional scheme, the role and place of the governor and his powers
under Article 164 of the Constitution, under which he appoints and
dismisses governments. The governor, like the president, is the
constitutional head who acts on ministerial advice. It is only in the twin
situations of a split verdict and the fall of a government that he acts as
the reserve gear of the Constitution. Governments are formed on the basis
of verdict of the people. But we have adopted the Westminster model under
which the constitutional head installs a government in tune with the
mandate. The government formation is the exclusive domain of the governor,
which is neither subject to judicial review, nor the presidential
monitoring, and not even to parliamentary overseeing. His power is
unlimited under the Constitution, whose exercise is governed by
well-established conventions and practices. Parliamentary system runs on
the basis of a body of understanding.

It is very distressing that there is an increasing tendency to show
disrespect to the sanctity of the decisions of the constitutional
functionaries. The framers of the Constitution placed as much faith in the
governor in the exercise of power under Article 167 as they did in the
Supreme Court in the matter of interpretation of the Constitution.

But many said Jamir acted as a Congress rubber stamp?

No. Once the BJP-led government in Goa was reduced to minority due to the
resignation of BJP MLAs, the governor took the constitutionally correct
decision to ask the Parrikar government to test its majority. What happened
in the assembly was a subversion of the constitutional scheme. The governor
had only two choices: imposition of the President's rule or forming an
alternative government. So long as the latter is possible, invoking of the
President's rule was constitutionally impermissible. The Congress-led
government which was installed, has been, according to conventions, given
time to prove its majority.

But isn't 30 days too long a time?

How much time he gives is the governor's discretion. It is amazing that
those who have spent their political lives opposing invoking of Article 356
have suddenly developed fondness for it. Putting the House in suspended
animation would have been constitutionally incorrect.

What must be mind-boggling is BJP's and particularly Atal Behari Vajpayee's
stringent criticism of Governor Jamir's action. Their criticism has
denigrated the office of the governor. But this has been their wont;
Vajpayee sat on a dharna in Lucknow for the removal of Governor Romesh
Bhandari and advocated the constitutionally absurd proposition that the
president could remove a governor on his own, without ministerial advice.

Then, the Vajpayee government committed a grave constitutional effrontery
by removing Fatima Beevi as Tamil Nadu governor on the ground that she had
acted on the ministerial advice. So much for Vajpayee's and BJP's respect
for the office of the governor and constitutional processes.

So, you don't agree with the criticism of Jamir's actions?

The Constitution does not envisage a hand-cuffed presidency or governor.
Any attempt by any non-constitutional body like political parties or the
media to substitute its own judgment with the judgment of the
president/governor is to destroy the sanctity of the Constitution and its
decision-making process.

Indira Gandhi was widely perceived to have misused the governor's office to
remove opposition-led governments.

Let us not talk on the basis of projections given by professional
anti-Congress intellectuals. Who removed governors

[Goanet]The Mom Before Christmas

2004-12-24 Thread Chris Fernandes
To: All the Moms - may they hv more power to their arms n hearts
tooChris

Twas the night before Christmas,
when all thru the abode
Only one creature was stirring,
and she was cleaning the commode.

The children were finally sleeping,
all snug in their beds,
while visions of Nintendo and Barbie,
flipped through their heads.

The dad was snoring
in front of the TV,
with a half-constructed bicycle
propped on his knee.

So only the mom heard
the reindeer hooves clatter,
which made her sigh,
Now what is the matter?

With toilet bowl brush
still clutched in her hand,
She descended the stairs,
and saw the old man.

He was covered with ashes and soot,
which fell with a shrug,
Oh great, muttered the mom,
Now I have to clean the rug.

Ho Ho Ho! cried Santa,
I'm glad you're awake.
your gift was especially
difficult to make.

Thanks, Santa, but all I want
is some time alone.
Exactly! he chuckled,
So, I've made you a clone.

A clone? she muttered,
What good is that?
Run along, Santa,
I've no time for chit chat.

Then out walked the clone -
The mother's twin,
Same hair, same eyes,
same double chin.

She'll cook, she'll dust,
she'll mop every mess.
You'll relax, take it easy,
watch The Young and The Restless.

Fantastic! the mom cheered.
My dream has come true!
I'll shop, I'll read,
I'll sleep a night through!

From the room above,
the youngest did fret.
Mommy! Come quickly,
I'm scared and I'm wet.

The clone replied,
I'm coming, sweetheart.
Hey, the mom smiled,
She sure knows her part.

The clone changed the small one
and hummed her tune,
as she bundled the child
in a blanket cocoon.

You're the best mommy ever.
I really love you.
The clone smiled and sighed,
And I love you, too.

The mom frowned and said,
Sorry, Santa, no deal.
That's my child's LOVE
she is trying to steal.

Smiling wisely Santa said,
To me it is clear,
Only one loving mother
is needed here.

The mom kissed her child
and tucked her in bed.
Thank You, Santa,
for clearing my head.

I sometimes forget,
it won't be very long,
when they'll be too old
for my cradle and song.

The clock on the mantle
began to chime.
Santa whispered to the clone,
It works every time.

With the clone by his side
Santa said Goodnight.
Merry Christmas, dear Mom,
You will be all right.

This is a personal SOS and perhaps yr netters can help save this issue
which has affected not only my ganv bhau but many others too.

My friend, Rosario from Mandrem has been a victim of Mundkar act for
umpteen years who is presently possessing a 1/2 century old small
mud-baked house, admeasuring 81 sq. mts. While requesting the present
landlord to purchase from him the plot of 300 sq.mtrs + additional land of
100 odd sq mtrs, Rosario was asked to pay Rs.200/sq mtr for 300 sq. mtrs
and balance @ Rs.800/sq. mtr. Since Rosario could not afford the whole
consideration, he requested the landlord to allot him at least 300 sq mtrs
now and the rest can be bought later once the funds are available, which
was refused and was informed that this plot, consisting of 300 + 100 odd
sq. mtrs, has to be bought outright and no partial purchase will be
permitted.

I guess as per the Mundkar Act, the mundkar has a moral right to purchase
from the landlord at least 300 sq. mtrs @ the rate provided by the Govt.
authorities.

Wud appreciate if anybody can help. Thanx

My compliments to Fernando for sharing his views on modest funeral rites in
Goa and encouraging us to follow suit. Without any doubt I will support
him fully to the hilt as it will not only strengthen our depleted economies
especially amongst the economically challenged, but will also hold true of
what our scripture tells us, YOU ARE DUST AND UNTO DUST YOU SHALL RETURN.
All the pomp and ceremony will not bring us or the dead closer to the
Almighty.

It is high time we exploit our desi culture and materials as it will enable
our village 'Jonesses' who follow the urbanites blindly, to save for the
rainy day. My hats off to Fernando once again for taking such a bold stand
on this issue and giving us a direction.

included Archbishop Concessao, Dr John Dayal, President of the All India

Court, National Federation of Indian Women Secretary Anne Raja and Dr.
Freddy D'Souza of the Justice and Peace Commission.]

Human Rights Groups and Civil Society at large is aghast at the repeated
attempts to sabotage the process of justice for the victims of the genocide
in Gujarat in 2002. Despite path-breaking intervention by the Honourable
Supreme Court of India in transferring the trial in the notorious Vadodhara
Best Bakery Case to Mumbai to ensure a fair trial, there seems t be a
patent conspiracy to alienate eyewitnesses, coerce activists and undermine
the historic work of voluntary agencies in the cause of justice.

We note the attempt to neutralise and demonise activists Ms. Teesta
Setalvad and her colleagues who had so far succeeded in convincing the
Supreme Court of the grave miscarriage of justice by the High Court and
trial courts in Gujarat. They had also exposed the complicity of the police
and the political apparatus in the anti-Muslim violence of February-March
2002.

We express our solidarity with Ms. Setalvad, Mr. Rais Khan, Fr Cedric
Prakash and Mr. Samson Christian, among others, who have been working for
communal amity and against religious bigotry in Gujarat.

We note the mysterious circumstances in which the young woman Zaheera
Sheikh, an eye witness to the arson and murders at the Best Bakery, was
whisked away from Mumbai where she as to depose before the court, and
brought to Gujarat. Zaheera too remains a victim, who cannot be entrusted
to the custody of the Gujarat police and administration. We call upon the
Supreme Court and the Central government that she be given adequate
security outside Gujarat.

The sorry episode speaks of serious lacunae in the criminal justice system.
That this is taking place in the backdrop of communal forces of the Sangh
Parivar adopting a more strident divisive agenda, adds to the gravity of
the situation.

We demand of the Central government comprehensive and early legislation to
reform the criminal justice system. These reforms must include protection
of witnesses on the lines of existing international practices, and laws
against hate crimes. Above all, there must be a law to prevent repeated
communal violence which has debilitated this country and diverted national
focus, energies and resources from development and the abolition of hunger,
illiteracy and disease.

suggest that we also call for a day of prayer nation-wide sometime
when Lok Sabha is in session in December 04.

What is 'wrong' in religious conversion?
By Kumar Chellappan

Religious Conversion is back in the news and that too with more
vigour. Although religious conversion used to be big news in north
India, it was conspicuous by its absence in Kerala. Now conversion
news has become as widespread as sex scandals and general hartals.

It all started with the attack on the US Missionary Bishop Cooper who
while on a visit to Kerala in 2003 got involved in evangelisation
work. The Sangh Parivar people attacked him and the poor Missionary
left the country in a huff. It is not known whether the
Hindu `fundamentalists' lodged any complaints with the local police.
These organisations are doing a lot of work for the `uplift' (social
and spiritual) of the poor and the downtrodden.

There are not many Hindu organisations involved in such projects. I
am yet to come across any Hindu organisations or Hindu missionaries
who are actively working with lepers, physically and mentally
challenged people, HIV + infected people and so on. There are many
centres run by nuns and missionaries for terminally ill patients.
Orphanages and old age homes managed by the Christian Missionaries
offer a lot of relief to all those rejected by their close ones.

It need not be a strange coincidence that most of the hospitals,
orphanages and educational organisations are run by Christian
Missionaries. It requires a lot of money to run these establishments.
It is quite natural that foreign agencies offer funds and other aids
to these organisations.

What is wrong if the Missionaries encourage the poor and the
downtrodden to embrace their religion? For the poor, what matters
most is two square meals a day. All the governments, which ruled the
country for the last sixty years or so, failed miserably in poverty
eradication. Although they churn out data and statistics to prove
that the number of people below the poverty line has come down, there
is no dearth of news about deaths due to starvation and poverty.

Even a state like Bengal, which is under a progressive secular regime
uninterruptedly for the last 27 years is not free from starvation
deaths. Where governments fail, organisations like Missionaries Of
Charity emerge, offering food and other benefits. What is wrong if
they ask the `unreached' to get converted to their religion? If the
Missionaries of Charity or any other organisation is capable of
eradicating poverty by making people change their religious belief,
they should be encouraged to do so.

26 October 2004
His Majesty the King of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah
Thru The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia, new Delhi

And

His Excellency the President of India,
Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi

MOST URGENT

A Joint Mercy Letter for the Release of Indian Citizen Brian O'Connor
sentenced to 10 months in Prison and 300 Lashes in a Saudi Jail.

Your Majesty, the King of Saudi Arabia, and Your Excellency Te
President of India

Greetings

I am the President of the All India Catholic Union, founded in 1919,
the oldest and largest organisation of Catholic Laity in Asia
representing the 16 Million Indian Catholics, at home and abroad. I
am also the Secretary General of the All India Christian Council, one
of the major and Ecumenical Christian Organisations in India playing
a leading role in the Civil Society movement.

I write this most urgent appeal to the two heads of state of Saudi
Arabia and the Republic of India as a follow up of an earlier mercy
petition to His majesty the King in the cause of Indian citizen Brian
O'Connor, born in the state of Karnataka, who was arrested in Saudia
in March this year.

We now learn that a Saudi Arabian court on 20th October 2004
sentenced Brian O'Connor to 10 months in jail and 300 lashes,
accusing him of spreading Christianity and other charges. O'Connor
was first arrested on March 25, 2004, by the Muttawa, the Saudi
religious police. We learn that the police reportedly tortured the
young Indian during his captivity. After enduring months in a Saudi
prison, O'Connor was taken to court in late September 2004 for a
brief, 90-minute hearing, Charges were reportedly brought against him
for selling alcohol and possession of pornography in addition to
spreading Christianity. Officers of his employers have declared that
the allegations against their employee are not valid, though it is
accepted that O'Connor is a practicing Christian.

Brian's arrest, his experience in Jail and now the sentence of a jail
term and lashing have caused deep concern amongst the Christian
Community in India, and the Indian community abroad

Indians go to Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Gulf out of
desperate poverty and to improve their financial position. Brian has
no criminal record at home or abroad, and has been arrested, we feel,
just for his religious convictions.

We appeal to the government of India to urgently intercede with the
Government of Saudi Arabia for the immediate release of an Indian
citizen.

We also appeal to His Majesty the King of Saudi Arabia to generously
give clemency to O'Connor, and ask his government to release this
Indian citizen who has already suffered much.

We are sure we will not be disappointed in this appeal for Mercy and
Justice in the name of universal brotherhood, human dignity and the
friendly relations between the two countries, India and Saudi Arabia.

Please be assured of _expressions of our highest considerations

Goa's Planning Development Authority (PDA), The Town Country Planning
(TCP) Department, and allied governmental agencies are systematically
destroying the ecology, topography, and natural resources of India's
smallest state. This is becoming possible thanks to a lethal combination of
greedy politicians, and bureaucrats with a metropolitan mentality and a
willingness to share the booty! .

Goa does not need an Adil Shah or the Portuguese to plunder this State. Our
very own politicians and their cronies are doing a fine job of it. And if
Goans do not wake up to this hellish scheme unleashed on this State, then
all one can say is God save Goa!.FN

Dear friends,
My compliments to FN for a well written, well researched and an anylitcal
piece on degradation of Goa environment.

Evidently, we cant blame the administration civic authorities alone as
we, the common people are equally at fault for remaining SILENT and not
getting involved. It is a pity that inspite of intellectuals in n around
Goa, we have nobody of our own in PDA (CTP). Our duty is not over after
making the netters n sundry aware of the problem areas, the same need to be
actioned - common people write letters enmasse to the authorities concerned
via print media and if that strategy does not work then I guess we have no
other choice but to have a person from our State inducted as CTP or take
this issue to the streets, as some fellow Goans have already shown the way.

The good Lord has given us this beautifl neck - can we at least stick it
out for a good cause, inter-alia several other issues which will help our
children inherit the earth in its pristine beauty? The Almighty only save
those who gets involved!

Dear Editor
Gomantak Times

Someone wisely said, Failure is something we can avoid by saying nothing,
doing nothing and being nothing and may I add that silence on our part
will embolden these demi-Gods to act as asuras. I guess we have to assert
ourselves and be pro-active in terms of putting our protests across and
that can be achieved if the media and ofcourse the police heirarchy are
flooded with letters from likeminded citizens voicing their protests rather
than cursing the administration within the 4 walls and in the markets.

I believe that all of us want to reach out and help to fight injustice. If
push come to shove, I would come down from my cozy nook and high horse on
to the street and I am sure the like-minded citizens will join me and other
social activists in solidarity. Our objective is to strengthen, synergise
and compliment our thoughts and protests graciously, so that together we
can curtail/stop all this bullying and justice meted out.

In the meantime, I appeal to those who hold the reins of power to desist
from misusing their power to victimize innocent citizens.

included an important dedication plaque glorifying the RSS, its founder and
a key RSS affiliate. The organisation's supreme leader, K.S. Sudarshan,
undertook the foundation stone-laying ceremony for Mithapasvaria, the
report claims as evidence of the link between these organisations.
Awaaz claims that it is no coincidence that the Orissa cyclone and Gujarat
earthquake, which saw a dramatic increase in overseas funds, was also the
phase of dramatic expansion for extremist groups. Our report vindicates
the findings that the US-based India Development and Relief Fund was a
front for pumping millions of dollars to the Hindu hate outfits in India.
The funds involved in Britain are at a much higher scale and these are all
being ploughed into garnering votes for the BJP, expanding the RSS network
and grooming the next generation of Hindutva activists, claims Mr Bhatt.
Sewa International has tried to dupe politicians, donors and the general
public. Its main purpose is to fund, expand and glorify hate-driven RSS
organisations, several of which have been at the forefront of largescale
violence, pogroms or hate campaigns in India. It's claim to be a
non-sectarian, non-political, non-religious humanitarian charity is a
sham, said Awaaz spokesman Suresh Grover.
