Vitorino rightly deserves the honour It's indeed comendable that Utordkars thought of felicitating Vitorino Pereira and taking him to Kuwait to be the chief guest at the 5th. Konkani One Act Play. He deserves this honour as his contirbution to 'Khell-tiatr' is immense and this stalwart has received a very raw deal for his efforts. Like Prem Kumar of tiatr, Vitorino is the writer who would write his khell-tiatr in chaste Konkani and was instrumental in bringing many new talents. While congratulating United Club of Utorda, I wish Vitorino all the best. Fausto Vitorino Pereira one of the exponents of the Konkani Khell-tiatr in Goa will be the chief guest at the 5th Konkani One Act play competition organized by the United Club of Utorda. The competition will be held on Friday May 12, 2006 at the Hawalli A/C Auditorium at 3.30 p.m. sharp. Vitorino Pereira is the son of the famous Konkani play writer late Santiago Pereira. Also a play of Miguel Rod should be published in book form for posterity, else the future generation may forget this great artiste. So far very few tiatrist have their work published in book form, prominent among them being Mr. Tomazinho Cardozo who can arrange finances through his influential contacts, since publication of book is a loss making venture. Gõyant Romi Lipyecho Itihas (History of Roman Script in Goa) Compiled by: Pratap Naik,s.j. TSKK, Porvorim September 3, 2005 **1 - 26 = Comments by S. M. Borges FIRST PHASE: **1. 1510 - 1550: The European Catholic missionaries burnt down all the temples that existed in Ilhas, Bardez and Salcete. They instigated the new converts to steal books from their neighbours. They also raided the houses of Hindus and confiscated chests of books therefrom. All these were then destroyed. This was done albeit with the good intention of keeping the converts reverting to pagan doctrines and thus ensuring their salvation. 1556: 6th September First printing press in India was brought to St. Paul College, present day Old Goa by the Jesuits. Since fonts in local languages were not available books were printed in Roman script. Between 1556-1561 Doutrina Christã a catechism book in Konkani in Roman script was printed. No copy of this book is available. 1560 -1600: During this period Jesuit missionaries from oral sources recorded Konkani Mahabharata and Ramayana stories in Roman script. These manuscripts are now preserved in the Public Library of Braga, Portugal. **2. The oral sources were learned Brahmin converts who recited the stories from memory because the written sources, from which they had read them prior to their conversion, were already burnt down by the missionaries for fear that they might contain pagan doctrines. These manuscripts were later used as the raw material for compilation of vocabularies and grammars. What is found preserved is only a fraction of what was collected/recorded. 1560: The inquisition was established in Goa. To escape this many Goan Catholic and Hindu families migrated to Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala. **3. The inquisition was established on the express demand of the missionaries. The consequent exodus of Goans to Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala is at the very root of the plethora of scripts that Konkani language boasts of using today. 1563: By 1563, a Goan seminarian of St. Paul College, whose name may be Andre Vaz prepared the first grammar of Konkani. **4. The text of instructions would naturally be in Portuguese but the Konkani part must have been in a local script because as late as 1575, the Jesuits were learning Konkani in the local script. (See Oriente Conquistado). 1563: Garcia da Orta's book Coloquios dos simples, e drogas he cousas mediçinaes da India (Conversations on Indian plants and drugs referring to the medicine of India) was printed in Goa. It contains Konkani botanical terms. **5. Any botanical work written in Portuguese/ English would obviously contain local Konkani names of plants etc. in the Roman script. Such is also the case with a much larger work, Hortus Indicus Malabaricus written by Van Rheede and published in 1675 i.e almost two decades after the last of the missionary works was printed in Goa.. This by itself does not prove that the Roman script was being used for the Konkani language. In fact Hortus Indicus Malabaricus contains a testimonial in Konkani written in Devanagari script! This goes to show that even in the seventeenth century Konkani was being written in the Devanagari script. The testimonial was issued by three Goan physicians (vaidyas) one of whom was familiar with the Roman script; he provided the Portuguese translation of the testimonial. Yet, the Konkani testimonial was not written in the Roman script. 1565: Jesuits started Konkani schools to teach Konkani in Roman script at Old Goa and Chorao, Goa. Later on such schools were opened by the Jesuits in Salcette. **6. These schools were not for instructing the locals but for teaching the language to the missionaries. It has been very clearly stated in Oriente Conquistado that they were taught the language using the local characters and not the Roman script. 1570: Through Jesuits' letters we know that already in 1570 Konkani grammar, Konkani-Portuguese and Portuguese- Konkani vocabularies were written by Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries. **7. Script is not mentioned. But Fr Thomas Stephens and other Jesuits are on record requesting their superiors in Rome to send experts for casting the local fonts. Two of these did arrive but they died one after another before their task was completed. If the Roman script was already being used, why this requisition? 1622: Jesuit priest Thomas Stephens' 'Doutrina Christã' catechism was printed at Rachol, Goa. Copies are found in libraries of Lisbon and Vatican. **8. This was a posthumous publication. Earlier to this date and before Fr Stephens expired, the Portuguese rulers had already banned the use of the local script for official documents. Therefore the missionaries had no other option but to use the Roman script. Later a few Konkani books in Roman script were printed at Rachol. **9. The name of the Prof. Joaquim Antonio Fernandes' book is KONKNNI NAD-XASTR Vo Romi Lipient Borounchi Rit published in 1972 by Fr. Casmiro D'Mello. As far as my knowledge goes Prof. Fernandes taught Konkani in Insitituto Indo-Portugues and Parel diocesan Seminary. He has also written KONKNNI VACHOP poilem ani dusrem pustok for beginners between 1946 1948. We used to publish lessons from these books in The Goan Review for some time. Fausto Eugene wrote: I don't know how many netters have seen or have a copy of Konkani Ord Xastra (maybe my spelling is incorrect) written by Prof. Antonio Fernandes (not sure if I got the name correctly). He was called professor because, I believe, he taught at the Rachol Seminary. I had mentioned this to Tomazinho Cardozo during one few meetings at the NRI Meet at the Kala Academy. He wanted a copy of it. Unfortunately, the copy is at a different location than I am currently at. I think I also talked about the professore's small booklet with Fr. Mathew Almeida, when he came to Toronto, more in passing than its merits and demerits in the context of present-day Konkani. Since the structure of Roman script Konkani has undergone changes over the last decade or so, Konkani Ord Xastra would not meet the present qualifications. It could be dismissed as old Konkani. The late Prof. George Mark Moraes paid a glowing tribute to Prof. Fernandes in an article in The Examiner under the heading, Konkani Man of Letters. I think I mentioned about Prof. Fernandes before on this forum. I had requested his daughter to get his works published, but she said that her brother was in possession of his papers. It's hard sometimes to convince people that publishing a learned man's material for the common good of the community is better than hanging on to such works for whatever personal reasons. In the context of the new form of Roman script Konkani, I would have loved to hear the views of Prof. Olivinho Gomes. Has any journalist approached him for his views? If not, could some of the journos on this forum get Prof. Gomes to talk. It would be nice to have an all-round debate on the subject that's hot issue now. Eugene Correia

Audio CD of 'FUTT' released Dinfa Productions have released the audio CD of Fausto V. Da Cost'a 'Man of the Year' award winning play FUTT. FUTT released in the early eighties in Mumbai and had 63 successful performances in Mumbai, Goa Punne and won the prestigious 'Man of the Year' award in 1983. Before completing 50 performances the play was produced on musicassette which was a runaway hit. In 1992 on the occasion of Tiatr's 100 years, FUTT was staged once again as a seven act play with the professional cast. FUTT is also released in book form last year. The CD priced @ Rs. 150/-.

Although the courses are aimed at teaching Konkani to the Goans, we end up teaching Konkani to non-goans who have either settled in Goa, or have business in Goa and/or have a holiday home in Goa. GRAF also conducts Konkani Seminars atleast twice a year but the attendance is very poor. Basically Goans are not proud of their language, suffer from a complex. The Konkani masses in Bombay are conducted by the Mangaloreans. The hymnal, Lectionary etc. are in Kan'nad Konkani. I have conducted Konkani courses for even five students. If Borivli goans are interested in learning Konkani, enroll 20 people and we will conduct the course even without a nominal fee. First time in history a Konkani show was organised by KBM Mumbai at Shanmukhananda hall which was attending by 2400 people speaking Konkani. And out of this only 5% were goans.
