[Goanet] GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ
Friends ! A report from Edwin Pinto - The Secretary - GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ is appended here below. GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ will be participating in this years WORLD GOA DAY celebrations. Please support them in any way you can and be PROUD to be a GOAN. rene oo If one is to capture the essence of that unique phenomenon called Goenkarponn, there is no better representation than an audience gathered together to watch a traditional tiatr. As the lights dim and the band strikes up, a cross section of Goans from all walks of life, united in happy anticipation, sit together, to watch a form of entertainment that gives expression to their singular Goan identity. Only a true blooded Goan can identify with, appreciate and enjoy the scenes, characters and jokes as they unfold upon the stage, expressing with characteristic Goan sentimentality, emotion and often sharp, colloquial humour the hopes, dreams, fears, unfulfilled aspirations of the community and even perceived social injustices . GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ was born of a strongly felt desire to recreate that rapport, empathy and most of all, that sense of shared heritage and belonging in the larger community of Goans. Goa has produced Generals in the army, Admirals in the Navy, nuclear scientists, ambassadors, financial wizards and supercops who have done their homeland proud.. Yet, despite all the talents and resources at our command, we do not seem to have succeeded in pulling together as an amalgamated entity. GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ was conceptualised as a catalyst organization that would strive to build bridges to various sections of our Goan community, both in Goa as well as other parts of the world, so that we may function as a cohesive amalgamation, bound together by our common identity, history and heritage. It will also be our endeavour to serve as a binding force and create a platform that would facilitate Goans to put their strengths and talents to use for the good of Goa and the Goan community. And I think we have made a significant if small start in the setting up of our library, which in itself is a symbol of what Goans can achieve when they come together in a spirit of co-operation. The driving force behind this entire effort of course, needs no introduction. Antonio Piedade da Morais, is a well known Konknni mogi, and a die hard lover of all things connected with his Goan ancestry and heritage. Morais Babâs steadfast belief that our Goan identity is strongly rooted in our shared history, culture, and most of all our beloved âmaim bhasâ, motivated him to build up over the years, a collection of Konknni literature ranging from the oldest to more modern works and other connected books, documents etc. at his own cost. Along the way, he received a few books from writers, publishers, other institutions and interested individuals by way of donations. Morais Babâs deepest desire was to put this treasure at the service of the community in general and scholars, writers journalists, students of history and Konknni in particular. He hoped that these books would also serve as a ready source of resource material to help keep our history objective and factual, particularly in these troubled times. It was at this point that yet another son of Goa, Afiano Fernandes, played a part in fulfilling this vision by generously offering his spacious premises at MIDAS TOUCH, opposite the Margao District and Sessions Court, rent free, to house the library until permanent premises could be found. As word of Morais Babâs vision spread, it succeeded in capturing the imagination of a host of other enthusiastic Goenkars. They responded overwhelmingly, donating valuable old books from their family collections, others chipping in with furniture like cupboards, tables, chairs, fans and other equipment, which has together enabled us to put this unique library together for the benefit of the community Today, we can take pride in the fact that this entire library, comprising around 3,500 books, has been set up entirely through the contributions and donations of our large hearted fellow Goenkars The enthusiasm generated by this endeavour drew together a group of around 50 Goans, who today form a registered organization called GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ, a non political, non religious body embracing Goans of varying shades of opinion, but united in common love of their shared âGoenkarponnâ. This little group of enthusiastic Goenkars decided to take the vision even further by endeavouring to construct a permanent complex â a house of Goan cultural heritage which can be used to showcase and promote not only the Konkani language, but also Goaâs literature, culture, history, art and folklore in addition to our traditional flora and fauna, so that we may preserve and perhaps help pass on to future generations the common Goan
[Goanet] Goan Traditional Games -
Friends ! It is with great pleasure that i share with you an article which appears on Goamog: http://goamog.com/ ooo ooo GOAN TRADITIONAL GAMES PRESENTED AT WORLD GOA DAY PORTUGAL -2005 http://goaday.goamog.com/Reports-2005/GOAN-TRADITIONAL-GAMES-PRESENTED-AT- WORLD-GOA-DAY-PORTUGAL.html 00O OO Dr. Carlos Vilar relates to us, on the event of Goan Traditional Games, celebrated among the Comemorations of The World Goa Day in Portugal , on the 18th of September 2005. The traditional games of Goa were presented based on the research carried out by Dr. Carlos Vilar at the Menezes Bragança Library in Pangim, Goa, at the archives of the periodical Heraldo, at the Internet and also the book Goa, Daman and Diu by Cândido de Azevedo. In all 11 games were presented, with their respective regulations. Given the limited space, in terms of interior as well as exterior, 9 games had been put out to the disposal of the participants, 3 being interior ones and 6 exterior. Besides these, the games of Rings or macaca and mitfolliô were presented only in regulation. Each regulation was presented in A3 sheets, placed in placards arrpund the venue of each game. The material for the games, such as bios, bourés and carrom, was brought from Goa and the remaining confectioned in Portugal For the interior games, the respective material was placed on top of the tables: 3 Carrom boards, 1 table of Ticktem with the respective designs in A4 paper and 1 table for Fatranim with the 5 stones. For the exterior games, the drawing of the ground was marked by use of ribbon-glue and spray of white ink: bioani, goindó-ball, aeroplano, lobiani, goddé and bouró; the rules of each game had been placed together to the respective fields. The venue of the games was much visited, not only by direct participants as also by many families remembering animatedly their times of infancy, while others attended the much appreciated projection of the DVD Goa - a Paradise presented on the big television screen set up at the conviviality hall. One of the active participants was Mr. René Barreto, founder of the World Goa Day, who came to Portugal to participate especially in the Commemorations; he was extremely enthusiastic with the presentation of the games and considered to the Commission the creation of a site of Traditional Games of Goa, with the aim to divulge for all the Goan communities in the world. I thought - I should share this beautiful post with you good people of this Forum. rene 0 From a posting on : ExStudents_StPauls_StJosephs_Belgaum FW: BETTER CHOICES ALL THE TIME A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old University of Notre Dame lecturer. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: If you noticed, all the nice looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the better cups and are eyeing each other's cups. Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but the quality of Life doesn't change. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it. Have a lovely day and enjoy life to its fullest! Smell and Enjoy your Coffee rene __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? [Goanet] Women 'get blame for being raped'
-- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- BBC UK news http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4453820.stm == 0 Women 'get blame for being raped' 00 Fewer than 6% of reported rapes result in a conviction A third of people believe a woman is partially or completely responsible for being raped if she has behaved flirtatiously, a survey suggests. The Amnesty International poll of 1,000 people also found over 25% believe she is at least partly to blame if she has worn revealing clothing or been drunk. Amnesty says the shocking findings show government policies are failing. And the director of public prosecutions told the BBC the report highlights some areas of real concern. Ken Macdonald QC, who is in charge of prosecutions in England and Wales, spoke to BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. The idea that a third of our people think that if a woman flirts she has only herself to blame if she is raped is, I think, quite shocking, he said. These are jury trials. The jury is the community in the courtroom and it is reasonable to suppose the jury brings into the courtroom a lot of the attitudes we have been reading about. The Home Office says it has changed the law to try to improve conviction rates. We have made a number of changes to the legal system and to how the police and Crown Prosecution Service work, to put victims needs first and to make it easier for cases to get to trial and secure convictions, a spokesman said. Rape is an appalling crime and has a devastating effect on victims and those close to them. Nobody asks to be raped Joanna Perry Victim Support Readers' debate We are determined to close the gap between the increasing number of rape cases reported and the low number of convictions. However, the Amnesty poll, carried out by ICM, found that most people in Britain had no idea how many women were raped every year in the UK or how few of the cases reported to police resulted in a conviction. Almost all, 96%, said they either did not know the true extent of rape or thought it was far lower than the true figure. Just 4% thought the number of women raped exceeded 10,000. The number of recorded rapes of women in 2004/5 was 12,867 - up 4% on the year before - although police estimate that just 15% of rapes come to their attention. Only 6% of reported rapes result in a conviction. 'Disturbing attitudes' Amnesty International UK director Kate Allen said the poll, part of its Stop Violence Against Women campaign, had uncovered disturbing attitudes. She said: It is shocking that so many people will lay the blame for being raped at the feet of women themselves and the government must launch a new drive to counteract this sexist 'blame culture'. The research exposed the scale of public ignorance over rape as well as the dreadfully low conviction rates, she added. The government has an international duty to prevent this gross human rights violation yet it's clear that the government's policies on tackling rape are failing and failing badly. Joanna Perry, policy manager at Victim Support, said it was alarming to read that so many people appeared to believe that a woman was responsible for inviting a rape or sexual assault. 'Devastating effect' Rape is an appalling crime and has a devastating effect on victims and those close to them. In other words, nobody asks to be raped, she added. And Ruth Hall, from the support group Women Against Rape, criticised prejudices in the court system. They still put the woman on trial, including her sexual history with other men, which is supposed to be banned and blame the woman for what happened to her and hold her accountable, she said. __ Yahoo! You are cordially invited to join the celebrations! date: 25th November time: 7pm The exhibition: William Reuliaux, a truly cosmopolitan artist with Belgian roots has been chosen to set up the first exhibition in the Grand Gallery Hall, merging the Gallery - as a piece of an art object itself - with the display of a contemporary form of art. A truly enormous task to use the Gallery as the canvas, where the artist is working on! The result is astonishing: under the surface of the walls emerge different structures and we find materials, with different symbolic meanings: blood, diamond, animals. and real 23 karat Gold! Walls have memories! A life within themselves. Each wall can tell thousands of stories and everyone who has lived in a traditional house, knows that; and whoever lives in an appartment can not know. This exhibition is so unique that it can not be fitted into any existing category of contemporary art; it will be on display for 3 weeks, and thereafter travel to: California, then in Chicago before it will be shown in Europe, and then around the globe. -- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- Goenkars ! Permit me to share with you good people of Goa - a post which I recd. from Clude , in Toronto.Canada. rene Rene - On Nov 05, I offered a mass here in Toronto for all those who passed away between last Nov 04 and Nov 05 and who once resided in Tanzania. So as to include Minguel Martins' name, for the next year, I'll appreciate if can you pl. (or ask somebody) to provide me names of the immediate relatives only. In short whose father was he? It dawned on me that it would be a great idea if you announced in your forums of having this event in other countries throughout the world - a special mass for all those who deceased during the year. For instance, I am doing it for those who passed away in Tanzania, here in Toronto. Somebody can come up to do it say for Kenya, Uganda, Bombay, Dubai, USA and so on. If one is interested in organizing the Mass for each country that would be nice. My proposal is to have it on the first Saturday in November. So that it can become an international event. There isn't much work to it. It's done for an occasion that will take place once in a year only. One would need to maintain a database of those of passed away. Then get a a church centrally or a most convenient location where the Mass is to be celebrated. Get people to sing or form a choir. Print a brochure with the songs and the list of names who passed away and for whom the Mass is held for. After Mass greet each other over coffee and light snacks. If a hall is required and has to be paid for, then pass the hat around, that way the cost is shared out. In our case, we were lucky to get a parish priest willing to say a special Mass and who offered the church hall free. We did have a collection during offertory of which the funds sealed in an envelope were given to the priest before the blessing. Most people brought light foods and it aggregated to be plentiful. There were all kinds of snacks. The objective of this Mass is to remember our beloved departed ones and get the community to pray for them collectively. That's all. Oh Yes, and pass the word around well in advance so people inform others, some come with new names to be added in the list, others offer their help and the elderly feel good about it, that a community celebration is taking place. You might have read in this forum the overwhelming support this celebration received. It is purely voluntary and I wish to promote it throughout the world. It can be done. All you and Eddie Fernandes - editor of the Goan Voice UK need to do is announce it. Let me know your views on it. I am prepared to share my experience with anyone who wishes to organize the celebration in their own community. And I am sure others are better than me at organizing a prayerful event. Good Luck! One victim, Mahadev Naik, of New Vaddem, told Herald that he was proceeding to duty when he was bitten by a stray dog. Later, the same dog reportedly bit one Manoj, while he was on his way to the gymnasium. The dog which was tied outside a house broke a chain and started chasing another dog and bit that dog. After that, it started chasing the passersby and bit around 17 people, who are undergoing medical treatment, said Naik. Soon after he was bitten by the stray dog, Naik said he went to an ayurvedic doctor at New Vaddem who refused to adminster ayurvedic medication. The doctor instead advised Naik to visit an allopathic doctor, as he feared that Naik may have contracted rabies. Another medical practitioner, Dr Rosario Menezes, treated some of the victims who were bitten by the two stray dogs. There are NGOs to protect the animals, but whenever such incidents take place, these NGOs tend to shirk their responsibility towards the people who are been bitten by stray dogs, said Dr Menezes. Dr Menezes stated anti-rabies injections are expensive and are priced at about Rs 1,500, while another injection Immuno Globulin costs about Rs 10,000. 00 __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! -- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- 0 BBC Thursday, 3 November 2005, 13:34 GMT http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4403388.stm Google posts first books online The first works scanned and put online as part of Google's controversial print project have been unveiled. Included in this opening swathe are many 19th Century works of American literature and history. The works were chosen because they are out of copyright and unaffected by legal action that led Google to briefly halt its digitisation project. Groups representing authors and publishers say the project amounts to copyright infringement. Legal row Books about the US Civil War, government papers and the writings of Henry James are among the works donated by project participants for the first group of online works. Today we welcome the world to our library, said Mary Sue Coleman, president of the University of Michigan, in a statement. As educators we are inspired by the possibility of sharing these important works with people around the globe. The entire text of these works is being put online by the search giant's digitisation project. The text will be searchable and users will be able to save images of pages. Google has enrolled Harvard University, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, the New York Public Library and Oxford University in the digitisation project. The search giant said the first focus of the digitisation plan would be books in the public domain, so-called orphaned works and titles that have gone out of print. Eventually Google hopes the collection of works it will put online will dwarf this first group of works. The plan to put books online was unveiled a year ago but has run into legal challenges that temporarily halted the systematic scanning operation. The US Authors Guild along with five large publishers have gone to court to stop Google scanning copyrighted works without getting explicit permission from rights holders. Despite the legal challenge this week Google re-started its scanning project to put books online. As well as legal challenges Google faces competition from a similar rival plan to scan books by the Open Content Alliance which counts Microsoft, Yahoo and the Internet Archive among its backers 000 Fwd rene barreto 00

It was a night that threatened rain but the clouds held their fire and the evening was one of fun and frolic at the Goan Groove at the Catholic Club on Saturday. Its World Goan Day, said Francisco Saldanha, president of the Karnataka Goan Association. In the spirit of the day all our members and their guests are getting together for an evening of dancing, good music and good food which we Goans enjoy. Designer clothes were out with a vengeance and gifted members took turns to show off their talents on stage. Lara Guido played a piece on the violin, something most of our youngsters are not interested in learning today. Oscar Menezes, the man with the golden voice, sang a few golden oldies. Then the talented Dr Maya Mascarenhas and her sisters Nisha, Rhoda and Gina regaled the crowd to a retro session of music. Maya, on the keyboards, can hold any audience spellbound with her effortless command of the ivories. The sisters sang a lot of oldies harmonising splendidly and bringing the older crowd on their feet to show off their steps. Plates of prawn wafers went around and were thoroughly enjoyed by all, washed down with a variety of coolers. The tables were adorned with candles dressed up very ethnically with mango leaves and lots of jasmine. The whole dance floor was made to look like a Goan shack on the beach, with lovely little authentic lanterns strung up all across the dance floor. New members Rochelle and Rajesh Dmello originally from Baroda had come for the first time for a Bangalore show and were happy to be warmly asked to become members. While a lavish dinner, including sorpotel and sunnas was served, supervised by Lorraine Correa, Ossie Pereira took the stage and sang a series of Bob Dylan numbers. He even added the mouth organ with a very authentic flourish. Later, recorded music got the younger crowd on the floor and kept them there till 11:30. Shutting down the show abruptly after that had a lot of unhappy faces but rather than face the wrath of the higher ups everyone quickly wound down the show. How long is this impasse going to last was the question on Bangalores fun loving lips. 00 Yahoo! FareChase - Search multiple travel sites in one click.

-- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- 000 Sub: An appeal letter for funding Goa YMCA, Panjim oo Dear Sir, Greetings to you from the Goa YMCA Panjim. We would like you to be part of our YMCA project at Panjim, Goa. On a prime plot costing over 30 lakhs in Indian Rupees, YMCA, Panjim, Goa is putting up a medium sized complex to offer affordable accommodation to the YMCA Community. The complex is estimated to cost around Rupees 60 lakhs approx. As of now, construction has been raised to the tune of Rupees 20 lakhs from funds generated by way of several fund raising activities and also from the loans received from the Bombay and Pune YMCAs. However, presently we have fallen short of finances and we are hoping that well-wishers around the globe as well as in our own country, will rise to the occasion and contribute in whatever way they deem it fit for the completion of the project. Indeed, it will be a proud moment for the entire YMCA community. We invite you to donate a room at a cost of Rs 1,50,000 (US$ 3,490) which could be named after your near/dear one of your institution. For the donation of a room, we would offer the room free of charge for one week each year for the use of the donor and/or his family and friends throughout his/her lifetime. The donor will be entitled for AC rooms. Please note the entitlement should be availed of in each respective year. The offer will not be allowed to be carried forward to subsequent years. We also invite a donation for a skating rink costing Rs 3,00,000 (US$ 6,820) which may be named after your near or dear one or the institution. We would offer the donor the use of a room for two weeks each year as in the case of a room donor. The complex has a small hall, for multipurpose use, and it has been proposed to name the said hall after any person or institution contributing Rs 7,50,000 (US$ 17,050). We will offer a room free of charge for three weeks stay each year to the donor and/or his/her family and friends throughout his/her lifetime. Please note the entitlement should be availed of in each respective year, it will not entitle the donor to carry forward the said entitlement to subsequent years. The Govt of India has accorded its sanction to enable us to received Foreign Contribution. We are therefore making this earnest appeal to all the well- wishers to send in their contribution by way of demand drafts or bank transfer. To facilitate bank transfers from anywhere we have opened an account bearing No SB 0088-771748-001 (The Young Mens Christian Association) with INDUSIND BANK (Panaji Branch). Indusind Bank has arrangements in London/California/New York/Rome. For further details of the project click to www.ymcagoa.com the website will keep the donor abreast of the progress of construction. All of us are aware that tourism has its negative effects too. YMCA Goa will continue and concentrate on the AIDS Awareness and Control Programs, Anti Narcotics Drives and Preservation of Ecology programmes. Income derived from the project at hand, will be primarily channeled towards these programmes. The project will be commissioned in the 3rd week of December 2005. Donations are also covered under 80 G of the Income Tax Act. Please direct your enquiries to : Ethel Da Costa [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From London to Zanzibar to Melbourne to California, Goans from all four corners of the globe joined in the festivities. Despite the bucketing rain and cool weather, Quebec Goan Association (QGA) members came out in fine force for the annual potluck picnic; close to ninety brave souls made the journey to Angrignon Park, Montreal. Tents and tarps were set up and barbecues flamed away as delectable dishes quickly filled the tables. (How can you have a successful Goan function without food?) The young and the not so young took part in a friendly soccer match just before lunch was served and what a feast it was. Several surprise guests joined the meal among which Park Security and a group of well-wishers. Shortly after the meal, the group was entertained by a game of bingo and lots of door prizes. As quickly as it begun, the day was over and it was time to return home. Events such as these allow us to check in with each other and meet the new faces of the community. -- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- Vauradeancho Ixtt - www.v-ixtt.com The V.IXTT celebrated 73 years of publication just yesterday with a mega event at Kala Academy. the President of Goa Heritage Action Group, Vice-President of Travel Tourism Association of Goa and Secretary of GCCI [all rolled into one] Ralph deSouza of the deSouza Group of Companies was the Chief Guest and the one and only Pooja Bhat of Bollywood was the Guest of Honour at the event. With a current paid-up subscriber base of 10,664 copies and a print run of 12,000 copies per week, V.IXTT has reason to celebrate. Compare this with the miserable performance of the Sunaparant, the only Devanagri newspaper first edited by Adv. Uday Bhembre and then by Raju Nayak and published from Margao and now, after resurrection by Dattaraj Salgaocar and published from Panaji, edited by Sandesh Prabhudesai. It is only academic to point out the caste and creed of the three Editors, there is no other choice of leadership when it comes to Devanagri Konkani. The sale of SUNAPARANT has always been below 1000 copies. Although it is in Goa's official language and script...and drws government advertisementsit cannot survive without massive doses of generosity from the publisher. Sermons do not sell, even in the Official Language! I have been associated with a alternate model that has been successful since 2001.[ It was it was introduced into Goa in 2000 by the Vasco Watch, Edited and Published by Cmdr.[Retd] Ananta Narayana based in Vasco ]. This concept is called a 'free-sheeter' and is totally financed by advertisements. It has its limitations...but lack of funds is not one of them. The MAPUSA PLUS started in July 2001 gave rise to the MARGAO PLUS and PANJIM PLUS in December, 2001 to coincide with the feast of Immaculate Conception. The Panaji Plus now has INVESTOR PLUS in its stables while the Margao Plus has added NORTH GOA PLUS, BICHOLIM PLUS, PONDA PLUS and VASCO PLUS to its group. The number of free- sheeters is growing even though the original group that published Mapusa Plus split four ways. It is an eminently adaptible model that survives on a large support base of paying advertisers and free readers. It is a model that I would recommend to any self respecting Konkani news magazine in tabloid or standard magazine format. In fact., most Church bulletins [ XX Igorjecho Awaaz,Saad or Sondex] almost follow this format unknowingly or knowingly. It would be nice to have an on-line version of the V.IXTT for the world-wide Konknni readership. Those living in India would do well to subscribe to it with pre-paid postage. Definitely, World Goa Day or Goa Dis [and Dat] can promote the Konknni readership or get advertisements to them so that they can pay the contributors who will be encouraged to write better and more often in Konknni. I do not know if Adv.Uday Bhembre and Prof. S.M.Borges will still write in Romi Konknni after the open schism in goa these days. If they do, that will be an achievement. The Thomas Stephen Konknni Kendr- Porvorim [TSKK] and the Dalgado Konkani Academy[ DKA] can help to get relevant literary contributions to these magazines and, may be, even create a pool of articles available on request for publication. We could set up a Trust to receive and disburse funds from overseas Goans and others from the Konkan who would like to fund Konknni publications. World Goa Day committees could help in this regard. Special Goa Day issues of these magazines could be sent to these committees for distribution the world over. The principle of TEAM-- Together Everyone Achieves More-- could be applied here. Let's put our minds together for a change. We have proven expertise in breaking heads. Viva Goa. Goenkars ! Please join me in THANKING Tony Barros and Edna for making the TIME and effort to serve our one of our Goan Families - victims of Katrina I would appeal to Goans wherever they may be ...support Tony 's and Edna's efforts in whatever way you can. As a Goan - I am proud to be associated with their efforts and I am sure you all are too. Please circulate Tony's appeal...A dollar from each one of us will go a long way. Lets put our GOANS FIRST. rene barreto 8 Tony Barros [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi All ! I am co-ordinating assistance for a goan family who have been displaced by the Katrina hurricane in New Orleans. The family - Nancy and Hector Paes-are currently living with relatives in the Queens area of New York city with relatives. They have lost everything including their home and have no intention of returning to the disease- plagued and crime infested city in Louisiana State. They have since been job- hunting in New York and Nancy has since been called for one interview. My dear friends, this is my first personal appeal to help fellow goans in distress , and I had to use this exercise as a last resort as aid is not forthcoming as expected. To get things in perspective, Nancy had to leave her mother - Esmeralda Gomes at a Houston hospital for treatment after the catastrophy. Unfortunately, in the process, Esmeralda got a stroke and is now confined to a wheelchair. Her brother - Wolver who is based in New York left for Houston this week after the Hospital gave them a ten-day ultimatum to discharge the mother. They were on their way to Florida where her other brother -Michael will initially care for her. All her expenses at the Houston hospital have been taken care by Medicaid. However, given her state, she needs personal care. As Michael strives to get assistance from special agencies for displaced victims, the mother also needs help. I have approached the San Francisco-based Goa Sudharop charitable organization following a posting on the goanet website. They are considering their request, and one of the directors may personally pay part of the transportation expenses. My wife -Edna has been co-ordinating with Dianne Nunes of the Caring Committee of the Goan Association of New Jersey for assistance in the form of clothes ( including winter clothing) and some prepared foods. The Association's Planning Committee- which is an appendage to executive committee- meets this Saturday to discuss among other issues assistance for the extended family. (Edna and myself are members of the Planning Committee). Nancy's cousin-Edissa Lobo - who returned to New York after being away for the past two weeks- will be making a similar appeal to the New York GOA and some other New York goans. I have also posted an appeal on the Goanet website and have received no responses. I will be making a similar appeal tomorrow on the Tanzanite website for Tanzanian goans. I have spoken with Nancy and Edissa who is a good friend of the family. They have accepted the fact that aid will take a long time to come. I have known Edissa since 1983 when I did a one-year stint in Dubai before coming to the U.S., and I can vouch for the genuineness of the displaced family. Any assistance -preferably money will be greatly appreciated and can be sent to the following address:- Nancy Paes, c/o Edissa Lobo, 91-18 108th Street, Richmond Hill, NY 11418 tel #s - 718-846-7946 and 718-805-8775. [Goanet] TOGETHER for Goa ! ....................
Wendel has written to REMIND The Overseas Goans and their leaders that that we need to be TOGETHER for Goa ! Dear Rene , I am surprised at how everyone has missed the piont. WE want you guys in the diaspora to write to the editors. When ethey get so many letters they will write bigger articles in their magazines and TV. So please write the letters. There is no time for a forum now. If we do not write in protest we cannot go to the next step. The plan is 1. Bombard the editors and media 2.Spread the word to TV agencies like the BBC who when they get so many letters will do a news item 3. When the pressure is on full force, we have a solution in place which the Govt will have to accept So please write and tell everyone in the diaspora to write letters to the editors we lsited as well as contact your own sources in the media who can highlight this problem If you saw the piles of garbage on the NH17, you will get a shock Wendell

[Goanet] RE: The alleged coining of the word 'liberatable'
Goenkars and Friends of Goenkars ! I think that Mr. Nair's remarks was uncalled for. Let 's stop abusive posts on this Forum ...and more so towards our Goans. rene From: Radhakrishnan Nair Maybe they are planning to revive organic farming in Goa by reclaiming the Dabolim airfield from the navy and making it irrigatable. Such a stupendous task calls for a grandiose word to describe their valiant fight and they seem to have decided to call it 'liberatable' instead of the mundane 'irrigatable'. [Goanet] THE SPIRIT OF GOA
0 http://oheraldo.in/taxonomy/term/22 000 Meow Meow THE SPIRIT OF GOA Hello Buddies, It fills me with pride to know about the existence of the day call 'World Goa Day'. Yes of course, I am proud to be a part of this land of sun, surf, FISH and most important, people who are hospitable enough to spare a cat, a fish! I didn't know about the 'World Goa Day' until Cosme showed me the Top Story that he had written for this week. I was so happy to read it because, I never liked the way the people from other parts of India interpreted the word 'sussegad'. I for one, surely don't agree that our Goans are lazy! Maybe, you could say that of Goan cats. Of course, I suppose every race has some exceptions. There maybe some Goans who laze around, alternately some cats work really hard! But there is something, Cosme told me that the Editor pointed out to him but he didn't have place to put it down. When he told me about it, I felt that I should write about it. Goans are wrongly portrayed as drunkards, waiters and cooks! Many of the smugglers and drunks in Hindi movies are portrayed as Goans, complete with names typical of our tiny state. However, the fact is that alcoholics can be found in any part of the world. So there is no need to point out to any particular state. There are Goans who may like a 'spirited' drink but then they don't lose their spirit to work. In fact, as the Editor pointed out, many Goans were employed by Top hotels in Mumbai, for their balanced personalities. In fact one of the owners once commented to him thus: Goans don't drink on the job, they are very trustworthy, hospitable, polite and speak good English. The spirit of Goa lies in its unbreakable spirit of enjoying life with its fair share of joys and sorrows. If Bollywood authorities were to attend Goans funerals and not just the festivals, they would know how the Goans take everything in their stride. I was surprised to note that one of my ancestors, Bilasao de Caton, who was among the first of our family to land in Goa has written about the spirit of this land. He writes thus: I can compare the Goan spirit to the phenomena of the sun shining through the showers! For amidst the tears I found laughter amongs the human race of this beautiful land. [Goanet] THE MYTH OF SUSSEGAD GOENKAR
heraldo -Pnajinm GOA. http://oheraldo.in/node/3447 31.8.2005 THE MYTH OF SUSSEGAD GOENKAR Yesterday, the world celebrated Goa Day with all pomp and splendour. This week, COSME I. DIAS reflects on what it means to be Goan and dispels the misconceptions linked to the sobriquet given to Goans! Simmering sunshine, soaking sea, sensuous sands, silvery surf - so soothing. Stilling stressed-up souls, lulling them to sleep. That is what homely Goa does to any weary visitor in search of some peace and quiet. But what does it do to a son or daughter of the soil? Sossegado or sussegad ! That is the sobriquet given to a Goan. It makes one imagine, someone sleeping under a coconut tree, fanned with fronds, by Maiden Breeze. Or someone just lazing in his voltare (easy chair) in his cool balcao? But hold on a minute! That is not what a Goan really is. So don't take this image as a licence to slouch into a slumber or 'laze' your intellect in front of a TV set, with a packet of chips. For that is not what Goa does to her sons and daughters? So before you grow up, it is good to get one thing straight. Goans are not sussegad as to imply lazy! The meaning of sussegad connotes a 'bouquet' of virtues for the person writing this. JUST COOL NOT LAZY Goans are cool! That is what sussegad should mean to us. In fact, it pays to live up to this image, rather than the one spread by some people around the world. They use it to label Goans as lazy. But the hands of aging Goan natives who are still working in fields, selling fish and carrying heavy loads; and the long list of the world famous geniuses Goa has produced, will prove otherwise. Goa boasts of generals, singers, actors, playwrights, fashion designers, writers, cardinals, saints, scientists, computer wizards Oh! the list is too long to even mention names. So work hard in your studies, be a person of substance and keep the sussegad' spirit of Goa bubbling. EASYGOING NATURE 'Easygoing' that's what sussegad implies too. Yes, we are meant to be easygoing people in the positive sense of it. Mellowed down by the warmth of the sun, the coolness of the rains and the wisdom of the green hills, Goans are known for their hospitality. So if we are to fit into this image, we have to be more accommodating people. Accept your friends and classmates for what they are, and not for who their parents are. Their fathers may be toddy-tappers, farmers or fishermen. Some of them may be rearing pigs and selling sausages in the market. But don't forget they all contribute towards making Goan life unique; they all add to the xit-koddi-nustem staple of this land. SOOTHING CALM The word sussegad in itself has a soothing feel to it. It has the sound of calmness. Yes, calm and harmonious that is what Goan culture calls us to be. If you ask your parents and elders they will proudly tell you about the communal harmony which prevailed during their time. Even till date, we feel the fraternity and love between the different religious communities of this tiny state. It is with pride, that our elders will quote the exemplary calmness that Goa exhibited, while the rest of India was burning in the fire of communal harmony some years back. It is very important that we continue being sussegad - that is maintaining our calm, when selfish politicians and their parties try to divide Goan community on religious lines. Right from childhood, we have to learn to see through their selfish motives and not fall prey to the cups of communal poison offered by some people who have lost their Goan essence. Would anyone who believes in people's power divide the community to attain power? After all we know that power lies in unity. What is easier to break, a single stick of wood or a bundle of such sticks? We have been known not to fall prey to divisive forces, but we need to maintain this virtue. For that, we should remind ourselves that we are 'sussegad' (calm) people .Don't ever let your friends' circle be formed on the basis of caste or creed! Remember you are Goan! And you are calm! BUT DON'T BE SUSSEGAD ABOUT It is nice to be sussegad for the good of society. But is it right to hide under this title and do nothing about the bad things happening around us? Being Goan doesn't mean being like the Roman Emperor Nero who played on his fiddle while Rome burned. No doubt, Goans are full of harmony in the musical sense of it. However, it amounts to being cruel and selfish, if you keep quiet while your neighbours suffer. Unfortunately, in the fast developing urban areas of Goa, the warmth of neighbourliness is lacking. People live close to each other but one doesn't know the other. Of course, we do have people who care about each other. But there are also those who don't know to accept help with grace. That is either because they have a big ego or they don't want to return that favour. So learn to stand up for your principles and don't compromise with
[Goanet] Think Geek - for introducing Goa Day in Goa itself !
8 CONGRATULATIONS to the GREAT new look for GOACOM : http://www.goacom.com/ And now for Culture news from GOACOM : http://www.goacom.com/ad.php?aid=2adid= Goa Day Splash in Assagao Dated 2005-09-01 Goa Day, popularised by London-based Goan NRI Rene Barretto, has eventually splashed in Goa, with the first of the joyous events, bristling the right Goan flavour being held at the Astoria Hotel in Assagao. The function was attended by a sizeable gathering of people, who were treated to the crème of traditional Goan music, food and drinks besides a lovely exhibition of photographs on Goa by a number of photographs including Alister Miranda, Prasad Pankar, DJ Shasha and others. The Goa edition of the celebrations was inaugurated on August 28 by fashion guru Wendell Rodricks. Participating in the nostalgia that has become infectious with events virtually all over the world among the Goan diaspora, were Deputy Chief Minister Wilfred de Souza and former Rajya Sabha MP Eduardo Faleiro. Lulu and the Fortes Trio, Goan Touch with Sharon and an excellent folk group Goan Harmony from Santa Cruz regaled the audience at the lovely outdoors of the hotel, under the shade of the mango trees, with popular singer Wilmix as the bi-lingual moodsetter. In his brief address Wendell Rodrigues remarked that it was the emails from Rene Barreto a few years ago which made the show possible, and though it was a small beginning at the moment, it should be kept up to foster our traditional communal harmony and spirit of celebration. He also said that if only each NRI Goan remitted one dollar each, a substantially large fund could be collected for welfare projects which would otherwise be difficult for any group or the government to garner. Dy Chief Minister, who recalled the Goa Day he had attended abroad, spoke in Konkani and felt that it was an ideal way of fostering of traditionally Goan harmony and also reliving the good times typical to us. Former Rajya Sabha member, Eduardo Faleiro, was also among the gathering under the cool shade of the mango trees at Astoria Hotels hillside outdoors. Faleiro did not speak was content to sit back and enjoy the proceedings. The enterprising Astoria owners, Ida and Edwin Fonseca, have really done a pioneering work as far as their heritage hotel establishment is concerned. The old Goan house, that has been converted into a hotel establishment, the attractive landscape levels, the stage and dance floor beneath the mango trees, the small but interesting spice and fruit plantation, all add up cumulatively to the environs. The highlight of the day, of course, was plenty of music Konkani, Portuguese, Spanish, English and even Russain that Lulu and the Fortes trio belted out. Lulu vocalizing all Konkani classics rendered originally by Lorna, Usha and others, is really unbeatable. The Goan Harmony group from Santa Cruz took us back in time, getting the crowd, largely elderly, mouthing some of the popular mandes, dulpods and dekhnis. Of course, the Goan Touch band with Sharon as the main vocalist also displayed their performing prowess. We congratulate Ethel DCosta and her event management grout - Think Geek - for introducing Goa Day in Goa itself. Another string to Renes bow! Viva Goa! [Goanet] Interesting : Lessons to learn
From Heraldo : http://oheraldo.in/taxonomy/term/16 ==000== Lessons to learn The decision by the Maharashtra government to institute a one-man commission under Justice A B Palkar to check the validity of a freedom fighters claim is a lesson Goa should learn. The reason behind this one-man commission originated from the claim of a so-called freedom fighter who was claiming certain perks and privileges. No one wants to deny any freedom fighter their rightful due but to make a mockery of the system is something to be ashamed off and to make a mockery of people who suffered and laid down their lives in helping India achieve freedom from the colonial yoke should not go unnoticed. But the greater question for Goa is what about the various claims the Goa government gets annually from people claiming to be freedom fighters? The other question to ask is where is the mechanism to check whether the claim is genuine or whether the claim is false and lastly what about those so-called fake freedom fighters who are strutting around, when they have done nothing, and why is importance given to them? In Goa, we should watch the Maharashtra proceedings carefully if we are to separate the chaff from the wheat and honour only those genuine freedom fighters instead of listening continuously to the ranting and ravings of these fake freedom fighters. [Goanet] The Goan may go out of Goa but the Goa will not go out of the Goan !
0 The Goan may go out of Goa but the Goa will not go out of the Goan. O The Goan may go out of Goa but the Goa will not go out of the Goan. World Goa Day founded by UK based Goan NRI Rene Barreto is an endeavour to bring together in solidarity Goans settled worldwide is a celebration of all things Goan; art and culture, customs and traditions, music, literature, cuisine and the Goan himself. Celebrated worldwide on August 20th, Goa World Day is gaining momentum all over the world with Goans that are homesick for their motherland. And why should the heart of the sentiment, Goa itself be left behind? Our very own World Goa Day event is happening on August 28th at Ida and Edwin Fonsecas Hotel Astoria, Assagao, Mapusa; 11 am is when celebrations commence. Kicked off by Wendell Rodricks, the event is a modish Sunday brunch-style theme party complete with quintessential Goan food, wines and the indispensable drink of the susegad, feni. There will also be a cultural program featuring Konkani music and artistes like Lulu and the Fortes Trio, Wilmix and Sharon etc. The event will also showcase the work of photographers like Ravindra Salgaonkar, Prasad Pankar, Nirmal Kulkarni, DJ Sasha, Alister Miranda, Joel de Souza and William Rodrigues; with the theme Lenspeak: Goa, it is an endeavour to view Goa from the perspective of their lens. All in all, the event is the Gift of Goa presented to you on a platter. A combination of modern lifestyle nuances and old world charm will ensure that youre all set to rock to the rhythm of Goa. All at a price of Rs. 250 per head that is inclusive of entry and brunch. The event is being organised by Think Geek Media and Productions. Director and journalist Ethel da Costa elaborates on the concept; This is an event that aims at building up overall solidarity among Goans. We want people to get together and take pride in being a community that is celebrated worldwide. The catchphrase here is think global, focus local. Local talent, local resources, local issues; this is a platform where all these integrate and work at bringing back the harmony and the synthesis that epitomize the Goan spirit. Ethel also delves further into the cause by elucidating that this is more than just an event to showcase Goa and its facets. It is an attempt at making Goa visible, so that it regains its warranted honour. Goans that have had the best of all worlds travelled should lend their experiences in making correct administrative and political decisions for the betterment of our society. Too many Goan youngsters want to try their luck outside in search of seemingly greener horizons. These should consciously stay in Goa and take charge of the situation, call the shots; to enhance Goan lifestyle, to elevate its position to that due to it. For bookings and info call on: 9822121012, 9226190933 000 WE ARE PROUD OF YOU , Ethel da Costa ! Re: [Goanet] Further insights into WGD
--- Gilbert Lawrence [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So how much more can one do? Rene Barreto and WGD through their web writings encourage Goans to write and be creative artists. But somehow we cannot complete the loop. Perhaps one needs some influence. :=)) In case you may wonder, Amchi Khobor - Our News - Inside Goa is priced for less than the price of a movie ticket. (U.S. $5:00 only). Those interested please approach your own Goan associations to request for the books. My request to you dear Gilbert ..is Get involved , don't expect some one else to MAKE IT HAPPEN for you. If You have a DREAM ...work on it and realize that dream - don't make others realize YOUR dreams .. they will NEVER ! If WORLD GOA DAY is embraced by Goan Communities around the world today , it is because I have worked hard for SIX Years to MAKE IT HAPPEN. I worked with Goans of all CASTES and CREEDS and all walks of LIFE to support my idea - not support me as an individual , I did not do it for myself ( i hope -others may not agree :- ) ), I did it for our COMMUNITY -it is why so many acknowledge the success of WGD ! We need to be very careful what we write about other Goans - as what we write about them - is what we often tell the community about ourselves .. NEVER hit back at those who TRY to destroy YOU ! Now - dear Gilbert ...You too can make a success of what you wish to . Be polite in your posts - I am in no way saying that you are not , don't argue - MAKE a positive contribution by saying nice things about the Goans and the Goan Community. I am sure NO one will refuse to BUY your books. IF i , an * idiot* (as some of our Goans have labeled me - I have archived emails)have succeed where others have failed. I am sure a clever person like you can do ten time better ..I can assure you ... Thanks to Goanet - who have been officially supporting - WORLD GOA DAY for the last two year , WGD is now known and read about by over 1 Goans and their friends all over the world. Support them and I am sure you will also be able to get your books known through out the world. You may be able to complete the loop : -) But all the news is not so gloomy! Amchi Khobor will be used as a textbook for a series of classes I will conduct this fall at SUNY (State University of New York) for their students and MVLIR (Mohawk Valley learning in retirement). The classes will be on Indian culture, history, religions and economic development. I am told by the university and many MVLIR members that they are looking forward to the course. And so am I. There you are , that is a great start and I am sure that if you think positively about doing things , I am sure next year same time you will have a different story tell. Focus on the POSITIVES , avoid the Negatives at all costs and you will make a SUUCESS of what you do ! A good example of GOAN UNITY can be had from the GOANS OF PORTUGAL - people of different Religious beliefs coming TOGETHER and celebrating WORLD GOA DAY ! This day was setup to celebrate quintessential Goa - traditions, heritage, culture, cuisine, music, literature, poetry - anything and everything that is truly Goan. [Goanet] Jorge de Abreu Noronha describes to us the WORLD GOA DAY event in Lisbon , Portugal.
WORLD GOA DAY (2005) IN PORTUGAL World Goa Day (WGD), which is being celebrated in many parts of the world since the year 2000, found its way into Portugal in 2001, thanks to the young enthusiast Constantino Hermanns Xavier. It is celebrated here not only as a Goa Day but as the Day of Goa, Daman and Diu. Constantino succeeded in bringing together, for the purpose, all the organisations existing in the country, i.e. the Cultural Association of Friends of Goa, Daman and Diu ACAGDD (Coimbra), Daman-Diu and Sympathisers Brotherhood Association - AFDDS, Indo-Portuguese Recreational and Cultural Association ARCIP, Casa de Goa and SURYA Cultural and Ecological Movement of Goa (all these from Lisbon). Since Constantinos two-year relocation to New Delhi, the coordination was taken over by Eng. Leao Fernandes. The programme for 2005 is spread over four days: August 20 (THE Goa Day) and September 16, 17 and 18. The September events will hopefully be reported on as and when they take place. Last Saturday, August 20, was the day for an ecumenical meeting, after which many of the present joined for lunch and get-together in a restaurant at the old Lisbon International Fair. In Lisbons historical Belem neighbourhood famous for the Jeronimos Monastery, the Naval and the Royal Carriages Museums, the emblematic Tower of Belem, the Cultural Centre and the Presidential Palace there is since 1960, by the side of the river Tejo (Tagus), a Padrao dos Descobrimentos (Discoveries Monument), built to commemorate the 5th centenary of Prince Henry the Navigator, in front of which there is a Rosa dos Ventos (Windrose) with a large world map, horizontally on the ground, showing all the places which had a Portuguese presence. This Windrose was gifted to Portugal by the erstwhile Union of South Africa. Well, this Rosa dos Ventos was selected as the venue for the Ecumenical Meeting with which the Goans, Damanese and Diuese of Portugal hallowed the 2005 version of WGD. The event took place between 11.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., and was participated by over a hundred persons and witnessed by many tourists. The 120 copies of an allusive brochure prepared by the organising committee were quickly exhausted. Besides the presidents and/or members of the managing committees of the five associations and the coordinator, the various religious communities made their presence felt through the following representatives: the Hindu community through its Vice-President Dr. (Ms) Ila Henragy and Sashtriji Ramniklal Dave; the Islamic community through Sheik David Munir; the Ismaeli community through Dr. (Ms) Zohora Pirbai; and the Catholic Patriarcate of Lisbon through Fr. (Dr.) Peter Stilwell. Dr. Mohit Yadav, 3rd Secretary of the Embassy of India in representation of the Ambassador, and Dr. Ernesto Jana in representation of the Director of the Padrao dos Descobrimentos Dr. (Ms) Maria Joao Sousa, also graced the occasion. The sequence of events of this Ecumenical Meeting was as follows: Welcome and vote of thanks by Eng. Leao Fernandes Objectives of the event, presented by Prof. Valentino Viegas Goan folk song and dance performed by the Surya Group of Music and Dance Short religious texts by: The Hindu Community: Shantihi Path (Prayer for Peace) in Gujarati by Sashtriji Ramniklal Dave, followed by its Portuguese translation by Dr. (Ms) Ila Henragy The Catholic Community: Reading of part of St. Pauls letter to the Ephesians, in Konkani, by Vanessa Fernandes, followed by its Portuguese version by Carlos Xavier The Muslim Community: First Chapter of the Koran (Opening) by Nabila Munir, followed by its Portuguese version by Nureia Rosa A hymn to peace, in Portuguese, sung by all present An Appeal for Peace, read by David Vaz Release of three white doves by the coordinator, the representatives of the religious communities and all the children present. Jorge de Abreu Noronha 0 May I once again take the opportunity to Congratulate the people of Portugal for showing us GOANS in Goa and all over the Goan world . how different people of different religious beliefs can live in harmony. I sincerely hope that the Leaders of the Various Goan Organisations , GOANS world wide , take the example of the Goans of Portugal and become as tolerant as the Goan of Portugal. [Goanet] Young thoughts on World Goa Day
CARE ...May be duplicated. 00 O Goenkars wherever you are , Goenkars you will always be ! It does not matter what people think or say about you , what matters - is what you do , and you TRY and to do as Honestly as you can! Try never to hurt others in your community in any way...with no reasons at all , if you do , you are hurting the very Community you say ..you dearly love ! With these thoughts - I d like to share a message from One of my greatest supporters for the WORLD GOA DAY, Constantino Xavier - , about four years ago , I invited Tino to be our WGD coordinator for Lisbon ,at the tender age of Twenty ? - Tino surprised the GOANWORLD - when he managed to get ALL the Goan organizations in Lisbon - Portugal TOGETHER. Many said it was impossible ..But Tino MADE IT HAPPEN ! Constantino has been very patient with me - and has given me all the encouragement and the publicity WGD duly deserves - for the last 4 years ? We hope to hear more from him once he finishes his studies. I am pleased to share his message on this our sixth WORLD GOA DAY ...as the ALLIANCE of WORLD GOAN ORGANIZATION grows bigger and Stronger ! PROUD GOANS - TOGETHER we HAVE MADE THINGS HAPPEN for a better GOAN WORLD ! rene barreto = Young thoughts on World Goa Day 88 Sometimes, it is not so good to draw great lines of separation between the older and the younger ones. So many times there is an empty talk about the need for youth and about the danger of disappearing identity because no one is there to continue it. Finally, more than ever, today's societies like to glorify everything which is young and immediate, using and throwing people, ideas and values as something disposable. All these phenomena take place among what many call the Cybergoan community, the more visible face of the large and much unknown Goan Diaspora spread around the world. Today, on World Goa Day 2005, as the coordinator of Young Goans International, I would like to propose the idea that it is perhaps necessary to look from a different viewpoint at things. It is time to share responsibilities and understand that being young or old will not make the difference. Attitude does. First, why is it useless to merely acknowledge the supposed lack of youth? Because it is wrong. As wrong as the perception that Goans abroad do not care about their homeland. Doutor José Colaço has rightly pointed out today, in another message on Goanet, that there are many examples of Goans who from abroad are greatly contributing to the development of Goa. Regarding specifically the youth, there are enough young Goans who, though born and raised abroad have great interest and potential in discovering their roots and contribute to the development of Goa. Second, why should we always think of separate generations, the youth and the old? Because we all are Goans and an identity does not know age limits it flows naturally like a river, from one generation to another. Many Goan associations like to call for more youth to participate in events or tend to underline publically the importance of the youth is not enough. Older generations have a true responsibility towards the younger ones. They have to transmit values, references and options to the youth. I underline options. Because it is up to each generation (and to each expatriate Goan youth) to discover its own way to deal with this Goan background and find singular ways to give back. Third, why should we be more careful calling ourselves and our associations Goan? Because to adapt an identity is an engagement, a choice, and also a responsibility. Just because some 20-30 people share some eating habits, some vague memories and a darker skin than the others around, and meet up once a year for a picnic or a ball, let's say in Moscow does it legitimise them to be Goans or to have a World Goa Day in that Russian city? Picnics are part of a community life. But there is and should be much more. You can only call yourself a Goan if you have a deep link with Goa. And to keep that link alive, Goan associations abroad have to think of new and original ways. Or else, one day, the younger ones might rightfully ask, as some already do: What is this Goan you all talk about?. Regarding my case, for example, I will not call myself a Goan up to the day I can minimally master Konkani. This last point of mine touches the heart of the question. World Goa Day is a great network, and a unique moment in Goan expatriate history where different communities worldwide are getting in touch with each other. But more important to know other Goas spread around the world, it is urgent to know the one and unique Goa, that tiny territory

[Goanet]Message of Solidarity from Goenkaranchem Daiz
888 From: Diana Pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message of Solidarity from Goenkaranchem Daiz Dear Rene Barretto, Plant a Goan anywhere in the world. Yet his heart and thoughts keep veering towards the green green grass of home. That we Goans place great value on our shared, common heritage, came through very strongly indeed when we stood shoulder to shoulder during the Opinion Poll, and unambiguously cast our vote in favour of preserving our independent identity and ensuring that Goa achieves the status of a separate state within the Union of India. That day of January 16th, 1967, was a shining moment of glory in Goan history - a milestone that decided the path that we were to tread. GOENKARANCHEM DAIZ, firmly believes that our Goan identity is strongly rooted in our shared history, culture and most of all, our beloved maim bhas - the Konknni language. This nascent organisation has been constituted with the specific objective of preserving, promoting and safeguarding our common Goan ethos, namely Konknni language, literature, culture, history, art, music, folklore and other related subjects. It also seeks to preserve, sustain and promote Goan customs, habits, characteristics, traditions and moral values, besides working towards the preservation of Goan heritage, its flora and fauna. On the occasion of GOA DAY, we take great pleasure in expressing our solidarity with our Goan brothers and sisters worldwide in standing united in our common mission to preserve our much treasured Goan ethos, culture and heritage. We look forward to working as partners in a united and co-ordinated endeavour to fulfil our sacred mission of preserving and passing on the legacy of the heritage left to us by our forefathers to our future generations. This undoubtedly is a herculean task, which can only be accomplished through our collective commitment, by pooling in our efforts, talents and resources to fulfil our common goal of conserving and safeguarding the unique but fast vanishing flavour of our beloved Goa. [Goanet].... some thoughts on WORLD GOA DAY 2005
000 Please permit me to share Jose Colaco's thoughts in relation to WORLD GOA DAY - in response to Wendell's and Gilberts thoughts. 00 From: jose colaco [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Fri Aug 19, 2005 9:39 pm Goans without Boundaries - can be done and IS being done !! [EMAIL PROTECTED] In response to Wendell Rodricks expression of his SOLIDARITY with Goans world wide : * GOANS WITHOUT BOUNDARIES * Gilbert Lawrence [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: a: I read Wendell Rodricks' article (and other posts) on this topic with interest and CONCUR ON SOME points with all of them. There are many areas where things are easier said than done. b: In my limited experience, Goans in key positions are often the bottle-necks in spite of their pious pronouncements. c: I can of course talk of generalities and be accused of being an arm-chair Goan. So let me give specific examples without wanting to beat my drum. I am NOT pointing a finger at any individual. Yet there is definitely a pattern that is discouraging. And I hope this is a call to do better. 1. A few thousand-dollar donation made to Goa Sudharop for use for a hospital in Porvorim is still sitting in a bank in San Francisco for three years. 2. A book written on Goan culture and other factual information about Goa for the Goan Diasporas is still way under-utilized becasue the WGD organizers and other Goan Diaspora organizations could care less. 3. Fund raising for repairs of Goan churches cannot be undertaken at Catholic Goan social events in the Diaspora because the organizers claim, there is no time for this. 4. Suggestion to set up diabetes support groups in various villages in Goa with blood sugar monitors donated by Diaspora Goans has yet to see the light of day. 5. A Goan maritime museum now started on the web, gets interest from only a handful of Goans; and no interest from the youth, for whose benefit museums are created. 6. Instead of targeting Goan school drop-outs, who will be the next generation of underprivileged (class of) Goans, we endlessly talk of and re-create caste divisions of old. 7. A web-forum of Goan writers is possibly being closed down due to only rare posts from Goan writers. Please let me stop here before I step on a few more toes. Wendell's suggestions are good on paper. That's the story of Goans! Please do not respond to me or about me; but to the issues raised in this post. As stated above, we can certainly do better. Kind Regards, GL 88S * My dear Rene Baretto, First of all let me commend you for the tremendous effort, time and personal funds you are expending in your crusade for the development of Unity among Goans. I know (first hand ofcourse) that this desire which is inbulit in your heart was the prime reason for your idea of Goans International. It is truly fitting that your e-address reflects that spirit. I will post brief comments in response to Gilbert Lawrence in a moment, but please allow me a few moments to say a few words about World Goa Day. No prizes to realise that it is your dogged effort AND the support you have been able to generate among the various Goan communities in the world that is responsible for some of the positive elements and happenings in the Goan Community today. Are you St. Rene Baretto? NO ! BUT ...you are Rene Baretto - who is working hard to make things happen for Goans Internationally. Now Rene, you and I know that none of this could have been possible if it was Rene working alone. But, but for someone like you who has devoted unmeasurable amounts of energy - IT would just NOT have been possible. Before I respond to the above quoted post I'd like to (from memory) enumerate some of the positive points about our Goans. If Gilbert or someone else is unaware, this is for them. If Gilbert or anyone else is moe aware, please inform us: 1. Millions of Dollars are repatriated by Goans working in the Gulf under some very trying conditions. But for these dollars, Goan families, households and the shopkeepers would have been BROKE. 2. Our merchant seamen continue their sacrificial service towards the betterment of their families. 3. Our Tiatrists are flourishing in sevaral cities on Goa, India and the Middle East - spreading the message of Goan-ness via their artitistic ability. 4. Goan professionals continue to excel all over the world. 5. Goan professional in many countries have paved the way for the recruitment of other Goan professionals. I personally know of a family which has helped about 38 Goan professionals with finding professional placement in Jamaica and the Bahamas. From what I know - many of these professional lived (gratis) in this professional's home for up to 6 months - till Feet could be Found. NOT once did I hear this professional express the hope that this act of kindness be repayed or remembered. 6.
[Goanet]A very Happy Goa Day 2005!!! On behalf of the Los Angeles Goans
00 On behalf of the Los Angeles Goans, I'd like to wish all of you a very Happy Goa Day 2005!!! Goans have travelled far and wide and we now have a presence all over the world. Goan voices can be heard from every country, across the globe and we can now say very proudly that we are indeed a Global Goan Community. Rene Barreto, whom you all know as the founder of World Goa Day www.goaday.com has approached me with the idea of an International Goan Youth Community, what I'd like to call YGI - Young Goans International. We all know that it's the internet that truly brings us all together and make us a Global Community. So, while there are several Goan web sites online already we noticed that there is no Goan Youth presence online at all. So, with Rene's request in mind I have come up with a web site dedicated to Goan Youth all over the globe. We are still formulating the entire scope of the site, but the idea behind it is to have a 'Goan Youth Portal'. A site where Goan Youth from all over the world can come together - meet, make friends, share ideas and thoughts, receive career guidance, discuss investment ideas and opportunities, network with one another on a global scale, the ideas and potential is endless this will not be a chat site, or a 'hook up' site. Young Goan professionals from all over the globe will be invited to be members and will post their bios online if they so desire. The idea is to have a site that actually provides value to it's members and has substance to it. So, on that note I'd like you to visit www.younggoans.com the start of a truly Global Goan Youth Community. The site is in it's beta form and we rushed to launch it online for GOA-DAY 2005, but it will be updated soon. If you have suggestions/recommendations, please email them to me via the site. Thank you for your time and make it a great day!!! Viva Goa!!! Ralph Figueiredo.
