[Goanet] Invitation to World Disabled Day Celebration
-- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- Dear Friends, There are about 70 million disabled people in India, most of whom are confined to there home due to complete lack of infrastructure. Any attempt to travel, enter buildings, parks or shops can be impossible, unsafe and humiliating, not just for the person with mobility impairment but also for persons with visual and hearing impairment. They remain unseen, unheard and therefore unaccounted. Denial of access to disabled people results in their isolation from Society, leading to lack of education and employment. We strongly believe that if the infrastructure is made accessible and barrier free, a lot of other problems being faced by disabled people will be solved to a large extent. Inclusion of the disabled, about which much is being spoken, will be a reality in day to day living. The Disability Act, 1995, a landmark legislation, which was enacted a decade ago, mandates accessible public areas, transport etc. It also provides for preferential allotment of land to disabled people. However even after ten years, most provision remains only on paper. There has been some efforts in the post Disability Act period, but these efforts are patchy and unsystematic. Inaccessibility of educational institutions is leading to systematic denial of educational opportunities to people with disabilities. The involvement rate of disabled students in the universities was found to be 0.1% and in schools it was 0.5%. Due to physical and attitudinal barriers disabled students are being forced out of education system and the number of students with disability enrolling for admission sees a significant decrease over the years. This is the Tenth year of the Disability Act. Talking of education, employment, rehabilitation will prove to be wasteful, unless we act in a serious manner. Our efforts to upload and defend the dignity and rights of the disabled will bear more fruit only if we all work together. It is high time for all of us to see that the Disability Act is implemented with greater earnestness. The Theme for World Disabled Day which is on 3rd December, 2005 is Its time for Action Tenth year of the Disability Act. On this occasion the Goa Disability Network in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare has planned a celebration, to be held at the Municipal Gardens, opposite Church Square on 2nd December, 2005 at 3.30 pm. All are invited for the event. Come and show your solidarity with the Disabled. [Goanet] Invitation to Amitabh Bachchan trashed
-- | Add your name to the CLEAN GOA INITIATIVE | || | by visiting this link and following the instructions therein | || | http://shire.symonds.net/pipermail/goanet/2005-October/033926.html | -- In the news item posted by Eustaquio Santimano, it is said: Jaipal Reddy is also keen on more South Indian film personalities sharing the spotlight. According to officials, the state government has been asked to woo Tamil actor Rajnikant to light the inaugural lamp. Popular actresses from the Tamil and Telugu film industry too are being sought to participate in the film festival. Does this not smack of using IFFI for purposes of electoral politics? When the BJP tried to do it, members on this list rightly spoke against it. It is time that we all do the same now. Perhaps Jaipal Reddy can be asked what he is trying to do to have Goan film personalities sharing the spotlight in functions outside of Goa. Sachin Phadte.

According to sources, Information Minister Jaipal Reddy snubbed Goa Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane for inviting Bachchan to inaugurate the festival. ‘‘We were told not to project Amitabh Bachchan since he was a Samajwadi Party leader,’’ said a bureaucrat from Goa who attended the meeting with I B officials in Delhi. Goa government officials were also told that Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi would be displeased with the decision to invite Bachchan to inaugurate the film festival. The I B Ministry then decided that Sanjay Dutt and Shahrukh Khan would be brought in for the inauguration. Both Dutt and Khan are known to be close to Sonia Gandhi’s family. Goa’s Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane is now faced with an embarassing situation since it was he who had personally persuaded Amitabh Bachchan to inaugurate the festival. Jaipal Reddy is also keen on more South Indian film personalities sharing the spotlight. According to officials, the state government has been asked to woo Tamil actor Rajnikant to light the inaugural lamp. Popular actresses from the Tamil and Telugu film industry too are being sought to participate in the film festival. -- Using Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/mail/

Here's an introductory message from [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Cinema makes us laugh, it makes us cry, it inspires and it thrills. Cinema gives us much more than that: it gives us the opportunity to like and dislike, to argue, to discuss and sometimes leaves us speechless. If you enjoy cinema just for itself or if you are one of those who are hooked on films and loves to make new friends and discuss films for hours on end, then: consider joining Moving Images Film Club. Starting with its first screening on the 19th of March 2004, Moving Images in collaboration with the International Centre, Goa at Dona Paula (also the venue of the screenings) will bring to you films and documentaries, popular and the classics, from India and across the globe. The screenings are open to all and there is no charge. Moving Images with the support of the Goa International Centre will screen two films every month. Filmmakers and critics will be invited to talk about their or others films whenever possible. We also hope to put together workshops, retrospectives and film festivals too. In April we will have two documentary filmmakers from Mumbai presenting their documentaries to us. If you are a student or professional in art, writing, advertising, social science, social work, publishing, journalism, architecture, home science, management etc., you will find that watching and talking cinema helps you broaden your perspective. But then cinema is also much fun for almost anybody else too. Schedules and Movie Lists will be posted on this newsgroup, so please join in by accepting this invitation. [Goanet]INVITATION to VHAG Workshop on Rational Use of Drugs
-- Documented by Goa Desc Resource Centre Ph:2252660 Website: www.goadesc.org Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Press Clippings on the web: http://www.goadesc.org/mem/ -- - INVITATION to VHAG Workshop on Rational Use of Drugs - WORKSHOP ON RATIONAL USE OF DRUGS on Sunday 18th January 2004 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. HOTEL THE MAJESTIC, PORVORIM GOA Organised by: Voluntary Health Association of Goa (VHAG) in collaboration with Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) Goa State Branch. Rational use of Drugs: Means that the patients receive medications appropriate to their clinical needs, in doses that meet their own requirement, for an adequate period of time, and at lowest cost for them and their community.- W.H.O. Unfortunately, irrational drugs and combinations, banned and bannable drugs and combinations however continue to flourish in India. We have around 5,000 drugs and combinations whereas most essential drugs lists recommend no more than 350. Even though most drugs and combinations may not be considered rational they are heavily promoted, widely prescribed, and consumed, bringing considerable monetary burden on the public as well as the exchequer, and of course doing harm in terms of unnecessary and toxic effects! The W.H.O. had initiated efforts to promote rational drug use in 1977 with the introduction of the concept of essential Drugs. Subsequently, this list has been revised every few years 8 times. The idea behind this concept is that a limited number of medicines would lead to a better supply of medicines, better prescribing, lower health care cost. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have generated their own list of essential drugs in line with this policy, and are drawing considerable success. The present workshop seeks to put before the participants irrational drugs, irrational prescribing behaviours and cost and damage involved, concept of Rational Use of Drugs, Rational Drug Policies, etc. The workshop thus seeks to enlighten the participants, so that they could explore, and then draw up an agenda for need and implementation of a Rational Drug Policy for Goa. THE FACULTY: The faculty for the workshop are two eminent activists in the field of Rational Drug Promotion and Drug Policies with long years of experience. DR. VISHWAS RANE : is associated with the Rational Drug Movement since 1972 and has also been involved in movements for Rational Drug Policy, National Health Policy. He is the founder member of All India Drug Action Network (AIDAN) DR. MIRA SHIVA : has around 24 years of experience in drug related activities. She has coordinated initiated the low cost Drugs Rational Therapeutics Activities and issues related to Rational Drug Use. She is the coordinator of AIDAN Both Dr. Rane Dr. Shiva have authored the book Banned Bannable Drugs. PARTICIPANTS: This interactive workshop seeks to invite a wide range of participants, who could be, or could get to be interested in a Rational Drug Use promotion programme.
