 Hi guys and Guls,

This is just ot let you know that GO has written back to me today to say sorry
and that they will give due credit in the next issue. They also mention about a
payment to me.

In my reply, I requested just to mention pic by 'JoeGoaUk' (ignoring numbers in
it if any) and not to worry about the money for now.

I felt it necessary to come back on this issue as I have also posted the
message here in this forum.

However, Herald and TOIgoa never wrote back to me.

I believed that Freida Pinto is a Goan, but Tim provides us a link to her on
www.mangloream.com. Didn't Eddie has a link to her or something on her on his
website?
A month or so ago I saw her on the Jay Leno show. Among other things she told
Leno that her mother makes "sorpotel" when he asked her how Christmas is
celebrated in Mumbai, and if the Mumbai kids believe in Santa Claus.
I have never heard of "sorpotel" being a favourite dish in a Manglorean
household. Bhende-Koddi, yes. Is Freida then a "mango" (father a mangi and mom
a goan)?
Success has many fathers, they say. It would not be right for us Goans to claim
her as one of our own.
Would Reena Martins please check it out. Whatever the case of Freida's
identity, I hope the success of Slumdog Millionaire gives her a big boost in
securing more roles in Bollywood. By winning four Golden Globe awards, it was
indeed "Day of Slumbay or Slumbai" at the awards nite.

Dear Mr. Agarwal,

Here is an exchange of e-mails with a Ms. Vanessa Mulquiney of your spiceroute
magazine.

As a person of Goan origin my friends and I are extremely disspointed that you
have
chosen a publisher for your magazine that does not have
any cultural sensitivity and decides to show a picture on a Goan beach in your
Spiceroute magazine December 2008 as attached.

I have filled the "on board service feed back form" on 27 December 2008
afternoon
flight from Goa to Mumbai and in that I have pointed out
this gross misrepresentation of people of Goa.

I have received a funny e-mail from the Editor which I reproduce below and my
response of today.

Kindly look into the matter.

Kind Regards

Dear Ms. Mulquiney,

I have not received your e-mail of 07 January 2009 that our Benedict has
referred
to, however I have seen a copy appended to his response of date to you. I hope
he
has given you a small lesson on what you need to do when projecting Goa and its
image and the sensitivity to the Goan people vis-à-vis the furture business to
Spice
Jet.

I was brought up and educated in Goa. During my tenure in Goa I have not seen
the
so called "Goan hill tribe woman" in the clothing that you have portrayed. Did
these
clothes came after the invasion of Goa on 19 December 1961? when you may have
made
your entry in Goa?

Your answer has not been well thought and to me is defensive on baseless
grounds.

As Bernedict suggest you should make proper research and portray the accuracy
of the
image of Goans and fulfill your obligations to Spice Jet in proper manner.

I would have expected a better answer to my e-mail on the correct e-mail
address
which is

oscarlo...@optusnet.com.au or oscarde...@gmail.com

Do not hold your breath that my relatives, close friends and I will continue to
travel by Spice Jet

Presented by Ulysses Menezes, www.goa-world.com
 Moderated by Gaspar Almeida

"Fr Joy Thomas" mangaloreancathol...@gmail.com
Dear Ancy,
Greetings from Fr. Joy in Pune!
I have sent out an invitation to the Principals and teachers for a Secular
Forum
Meeting here at Ishvani Kendra. About 200 people have responded. Attached is
the
letter.
Yours sincerely,
Fr. Joy Thomas SVD

Dear Principals and Teachers,

The socio-political scenario of the last few months has significantly raised
the
threats from communal politics in India. In spite of that Christmas came with
the
message that every problem is a possibility in disguise as it was for Jesus. He
was
impressed by what the world could become never depressed by what the world was.
So I
wish you A Peaceful NEW YEAR! May Jesus enable us to work fearlessly and
courageously to remove all that is bad, sad and mad from the face of our
country!

On 9th and 10th December 2008, a National Meeting was organised here in the
context
of violence, terror and attacks particularly against minorities. We were made
aware
of the urgent need to understand the problem and conscientise as many people as
possible about the possible consequences to our lives. The participants worked
out
an action plan to combat communal forces on a war footing. As a first step,
with the
full blessing of our Bishop, Ishvani Kendra is organising a one-day seminar on
Democracy and Minority Rights on Saturday 17th January 2009.

I wish to invite all the principals and two teachers from each of our schools,
for
this important seminar starting at 9.30 a.m. (registration) and ending at 5.30
p.m.
Most Rev. Valerian D Souza, the Bishop of Poona, will inaugurate the seminar at
10
a.m. and Fr. Cedric Prakash from Gujarat, Advocate Irfan Engineer from Mumbai
and
Mr. Neeraj Jain from Pune will be the resource persons. We cannot accommodate
more
than 200 people. So please contact Ishvani Kendra office in advance to inform
about
your participation. To defray the cost of basic expenses, we would appreciate
a
contribution of Rs. 100/- from each participant who can afford it!

Looking forward to your active participation,
Yours sincerely,

Fr. Joy Thomas SVD.

Konkani books... awaiting getting noticed

THE PRINTED WORD

What more can
Konkani books
do to get the
attention deserved,
asks Frederick FN
Noronha in his weekly
column on the book in Goa.

Margao was recently host to a Romi Konkani meet, held at the brand new
and still-in-good-shape Ravindra Bhavan there. (One hopes the
institution is adequately maintained, well-utilised, and becomes
accessible to those who able vibrant cultural products to stage, not
just those well connected and politically-linked with those who call
the shots.)

Outside the main hall staging this event, a table put up by Michael
Gracias had a dozen and more Konkani books on sale. Gracias is someone
I've interacted with off and on, and his model is interesting. He has
his own small publishing lable and has come out with almost a dozen
books of his own by now.

Instead of waiting for a buyer to go all the way to the bookshop and
purchase a book, Michael takes his books to the buyer. He doesn't have
any false pride about setting up shop, literally, alongside a cultural
event, or even a church fair, and thus sell his books.

Two of those I picked up from him were artist-musician Willy Goes'
'Pedru Tiva' and a yellowed-paper Romi Konkani book called
'Etelvinache Bhognar'. The subtitle of the latter reads 'Ek Bhou
Churchureanchi ani Sosnnaiechi Contha' by A.V. D'Cruz. It's second
edition was published in 1966, in Mumbai, and while it cost a couple
of rupees then, it is priced at Rs 70 now -- obviously antiquarian
book value! Obviously, the first edition came out in the 1920s!

Over the years, Romi Konkani books have shown their ability to sell.
While critics blast them for low-standards, the fact of the matter is
that their language has been unpretentious if simple. They cater to
simple folk -- Goans who had not shifted the full-way to languages
like Portuguese or English for their ideas and entertainment.
(Manoharrai Sardesai's book on Konkani literature is interesting and
explains many issues involved.)

Today, Konkani books -- in Romi or Devanagari -- are difficult to
locate in bookshops. It is not, as some believe, because booksellers
discriminate against books in this language.

One would think that the situation arises because (i) the books are
priced in a way that leaves little margins for the distributors (ii)
divisions of script and the lack of reviews means the market for such
books is small (smaller than even Goa-linked English books).

But some way, this vicious cycle needs to be broken. It would help if
more translations of Konkani books are done too.

Michael Gracias of Queeny Productions, is based in Majorda and has his
office in Velsao. He has come out with 11 titles in a year, priced
from Rs 30 to 125.

"People are not inclined towards reading. The Konkani used is
sometimes found to be of a higher-level or of a different (dialect),"
says Gracias. He believes that Romi Konkani publishing was put on the
backburner for two decades, after the Official Language Act was
passed. But, in the past two to three years, Romi Konkani writing has
seen a big comeback, according to him.

Gracias agrees that books should not be restricted to bookshops alone.
These should be taken to the "doorstep" of the commonman, says he.
Fiction and short-stories move fast compared to other genres, says he.
But his view is that there is an insufficient amount of reviewing of
new Konkani books when they are published.

This, of course, leads to a situation where a book is hardly known
when it is hot on the stands. By the time potential readers start
searching for a copy, it is already out of print, or dumped in some
corner and thus inaccessible.

Of course, the whole issue of who gets government grants and support
for publishing -- and whether this is a hindrance or help -- is
another issue awaiting to be examined.

GOA CATALOGUE

Mapusa-based The Other India Bookstore came out recently with a
four-page tabloid sized Goa books catalogue. Rather interesting
product and contains useful information.

Best of all, it's unpriced and free. If you write to me, I could email
you a plain-text copy too. You would be surprised that there are so
many Goa-related books already published, and out there for sale,
mostly at reasonable prices.

In my view, a handful of book outlets in Goa do a good job of
promoting Goa-related books. These include the OIBS (Mapusa, 2263306,
above the Old Mapusa Clinic), Broadways

Santosh, perhaps you can tell us how the Hindu-Christian relationship is much
stronger today than it was in 1961 and also maybe you can elaborate a little

Selma,

Now, who has denied you the right of expressing your whimsical opinions on
Goanet? Please let me have the privilege of disagreeing with you. You are free
to take refuge in innuendo and insinuations.

Regarding what you have stated below about Goan election politics, let me just
say that your rhetoric does not match with the historical and present-day
realities. We are much better off today in Goa, as far Hindu-Christian and
caste-based politics is concerned.

Cheers,

Santosh

P.S. BTW, if you think your rhetoric and other kinds of one-sided propaganda on
Goanet does not contribute to divisiveness then you are unfortunately mistaken.
But you will have to find out the truth for yourself.

"Hue and cry" is a loaded term. It is entirely plausible that, being
an issue connected with matters of faith, this is an issue of
relevance to those Indians who are non-meat/beef-eaters or in whose
religion bestows a place of reverence to the cow (whose role in the
economy of the past cannot be questioned).

Needless to say, the 'cow slaughter' issue is one that has been
politicised by those politicians wanting to play on religious
feelings. But can't we accept that there are feelings of religiosity
behind this too?

The sentence "if we can discuss" suggests an attitude of
if-you-can-hurt-me-I-can-hurt-you-too. I hope you will tell me that my
undrestanding is wrong.

I understand how hurt religious/communal feelings can soar out of
control though, even with us.

Btw, after reading an 'animal liberation' magazine about a decade or
more ago, I turned veg. Not for religious reasons, though. And I'm a
very *veg*. I don't mind eating the gravy of some meat-dish... as long
as I don't end up feeling I've added to animal slaughter in the globe
:-)

For some (inconsistent and unexplained) reason, I still eat fish.
Okay, don't tell me that's illogical. I know it is :-) Maybe it has to
do with the dietary habits of a Goa, where nearly 95% of the
population eats fish, and it's tough to get a decent meal without any
fish, unless it's at a Udupi or Gujarati joint (whose food I
appreciate too).

Abortion is bad, and so is cow-slaughter. But do spare a thought for
all those bulls, hens, and even fish, who have to make that ultimate
sacrifice to ensure that *we* are well-fed! FN

Santosh your commentary of late is getting really tiresome. Having done your
best to discredit Marshall Mendonca, the Times of India and Frederick Noronha
as propagandists, you seem to think that no one other than you is capable of
forming an unbiased opinion. One is either misinformed, whimsical or saying
things for effect.

I'm being neither whimsical nor divisive and dangerous. A cursory look at
affairs in Goa will point to it being far from the picture presented to the
world in 1961. You may want to live in your own cocoon of comfort but the very
fact that Goan loyalty is split between BJP and Congress is a telling sign of
how communal and castiest our voting pattern has become. Now, do allow some of
us the privilege of having an opinion even if it doesn't have two independent
sources to concur with it and hasn't undergone the double-blind testing method.

I hope they did not mistake her for a vestal virgin. Finally one appears who
knows how to dress or at least seemed to have received good advice. Nothing
like getting turned off seeing heavy zari outfits where there is no
compensation in the overlaid embroidery whether it is where the sleeve meets
the armhole, a pin tuck, the zip stuffed in between heavy zari folds at the
back, etc.

But at the end it, the west is always on the lookout at another ambassador
for consumerism. So thrive Frida, make your mark.

Freida in a beautifully draped dress accepted the award for Dev Patel at the
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on January 8 (Thursday) in Santa Monica,
California.

Stunning actress Freida Pinto is a relative new comer to the celebrity
spotlight but she is making a huge splash and has shot straight to the top
of best dressed lists with her sexy style, said *Metro*.

I have minor disagreements with a couple of points in my friend
Basilio's latest Herald article on secularism. Here they are:

>
>If secularism is skin-deep, it should not surprise anyone because it
>is not a lived experience for majority of the people; it does not
>address or offer meaning to any of the major issues of life and
>death, loss and destruction, and does not function as a moral
>leveling or unifying mechanism. It is a recent phenomenon, roughly
>300 years old, and has not taken hold of public consciousness;
>therefore it has not become part of the cultural DNA of the
>individual, as religion has become.
>

While this is probably true of Europe and United States, secularism,
from the agnostic, atheistic and pluralistic standpoints has a long
tradition in India extending to more than 2500 years ago. From the
atheistic standpoint Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and Greece also have a
rich history, which in the first three cases goes much farther back
than in India. But it is true that unlike religion, which is visceral,
secularism is entirely intellectual in nature. It would be very hard
to impress its value upon the minds of all folk without increasing the
level of literacy in society. So it would be hard to use it as a
political trump card with any kind of mass appeal. It has to be
enforced through the courts as a constitutional principle.

>
>Religion as a socio-anthropological phenomenon will remain with us,
>even to the chagrin of the secularists (secularism itself takes on
>the character of religion with all its evolving rituals, beliefs,
>and missionary like activism).
>

The Indian brand of secularism would have no problem if religion in
its many forms continued and grew indefinitely. Indeed, pluralism is
enriched by diversification and spread of religious convictions, as
long as there is mutual tolerance. Moreover, the greater the diversity
of religions, the weaker each of them becomes in terms of wielding any
kind of political power because of competing interests. I also do not
believe that a rational concept such as secularism can ever become a
religion because the latter requires certain core ethereal beliefs
that are immutable and are not subject to updating by new knowledge
and change in environment.

Cheers,

Santosh

Mapusa, Jan 8: Roopa Bhakta, a Mangalorean by origin, has been chosen as the
president of Mapusa Municipality in Goa.

Roopa, daughter of the late K Gopalakrishna Pai, who was the managing partner
of New Chitra Talkies here, is settled in Goa since the last about 25 years.
Her husband Gurudat Bhakta hails from Kumble and runs business concern in Goa.
Roopa, who is an active Congress worker, has functioned as the treasurer of Goa
Pradesh Congress Committee and the president of north Goa Womens' Congress in
the past. She has emerged as the first person of Mangalore origin to rise to
this coveted post in Goa.
Roopa has taken over the post from the outgoing president who resigned and as
such, her remaining term is only about 23 months. Incidentally, Gurudat Bhakta
has been elected as the Rotary Governor of Goa for the year 2009-10.
Roopa got elected as an independent candidate, in the 15-member Mapusa
Municipal Council. The council has members from the Congress, BJP, JD(S) and
independents. She defeated Chitra Munerkar by bagging eight votes as against
the seven polled by her opponent.

Dear Goannetters,
A lot of hue and cry is being heard about cow slaughter. Different
communities have different customs. Some eat beef, others do not. Yet all of
us are called to avoid as much as possible "red meat" by medical
professionalists. I found the following write-up which may help us to see
how relative this custom is.
If we can discuss about non-existence of God in this Forum, we can certainly
hear different opinions about "cow slaughter".

"Hindus eating Beef ?

Any references to the beef-eating past of ancient Hindus have finally been
deleted from Indian school textbooks, after a three-year campaign by
religious hardliners.

For almost a century history books for primary and middle schools told how
in ancient India beef was considered a great delicacy among
Hindus-especially among the highest caste-and how veal was offered to Hindu
deities during special rituals.

The offending chapters have been deleted from new versions of the books
which were delivered to schoolchildren last week. However, the National
Council of Educational Research and Training [NCERT], which bears
responsibility for the texts, now seems to be unhappy with the changes,
which were agreed to by a former NCERT director.

NCERT counsel Prashant Bhushan said that ancient Hindus were indeed
beef-eaters and the council should not have distorted historical facts by
deleting the chapters.

"NCERT has committed a mistake by dropping those facts from the textbooks.
It is a victory for Hindu fundamentalists who have lodged a misinformation
campaign. Historians should unite against this cowardice by the council
[NCERT]," said noted Kolkata historian Ashish Bosh

Much of this current debate began in 2001 when Professor DN Jha published
his book, The Myth of the Holy Cow:

Professor Jha stumbled upon the facts relating to the presence of beef in
pre-Islamic Vedic India two years ago, while researching Indian dietary
habits.

He says there is plenty of historical evidence to support the theory.

An ancient Hindu text, the Manusmriti (200BC to 200AD), lists the cow as one
of several animals whose meat can be eaten.

A mention is also made, he says, in one of the two great Indian epics - the
Mahabharata - which speaks of beef being a delicacy served to esteemed
guests".

Dear Goannetters,
While I was reading Goanet postings on God's existence or non-existence, I
received this write-up which goes here in a lighter vein, amidst the heat
generated by 'atheistic postings' for us who do accept God as real, as source
of being, as heavenly Father, in spite of all our vicissitudes and
sufferings!...

FLORIDA COURT SETS ATHEIST HOLY DAY...

In Florida, an atheist created a case against the Easter and
Passover holy
days.
He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against
Christians,
Jews and observances of their holy days.
The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such
recognized day(s).
The case was brought before a judge.
After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer,
the judge
banged his gavel declaring, 'Case dismissed.'

The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying,
'Your
honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case?
The Christians have Christmas, Easter, etc. The Jews have
Passover, Yom
Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, and Hanukkah.
Yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays.'

The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, 'But you do.
Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant.'

The lawyer said, 'Your Honor, we are unaware of any special
observance
or holiday for atheists.'

The judge said, 'The calendar shows April 1st is 'April Fools'
Day.'
Psalm 14:1 states: "The fool says in his heart, there is no
God."
Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that if your client says
there is
no God, then he is a fool.
Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned.

'AMEN'

Dear Freddy

To your mind, heart blowing article, I would not say once, twice, but 100 times
YES CGW's has indeed lost its charm. There may be thousand reasons, time
factor, money power, return to gulf scenarios, babies in womb scenarios(one off
may be,but possible), circumstances.
Whatever the reason, we lost OUR HAPPINESS, LOVE FOR NEIGHBOURS, CULTURE,
IDENTITY.
I request you to please please make sure, somehow , this reaches all TIATR
directors and I am sure one of them will work towards bringing this onstage to
the so called modern generation, & to others(forgetful generation) that we are
living with artifical-charm.
Let this be done. I plead. Lets try to rewind. Even if one wedding can take
place in the near future exactly as per your email, I would say YOU DID IT.
I say it is possible simply because Obama is rewinding too...by going with the
Lincoln bible and food.
I know Obama is Obama. But why not try to beleive and try to REWIND GOA.

Ain't life grand?

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?newsid=1220513

Excerpt from the article:

"The palpable outrage that most South Bombay socialites felt after the terror
attacks in November last year resulted in some serious soul searching,
politician bashing, sms messaging, Facebook emailing, group marching and candle
burning."

Mario observes:

No amount of soul searching would have prevented the Mumbai Massacre because it
was carried out by suicidal Pakistani terrorists. The Pakistan government
refers to them as non-state-actors, and apparently the Indian government has
been unable to provide any evidence connecting them to the Pakistan government,
in spite of public assertions that they "must be".

This article is a cynical piece apparently by a columnist who exploits
socialites for a living, by bashing them. Life is always grand for socialites
- which is why they are called socialites:-)) I have no problem with what they
choose to do as long as they are using their own money and keep out of my way
or impede anyone else's activities.

What I would like to know is what the Indian authorities are doing to bring
their security systems up to world standards.

1. Are the Black Cats being deployed around the country?

2. Are local police departments in major cities adding SWAT teams?

3. Are the intel procedures being improved?

3. Are the security specialists being provided with custom fitted bullet proof
vests, night vision goggles, communications intercepting and jamming equipment,
bullet proof vehicles, specialized training, etc.?

If someone has any information on such isssues I, for one, would like to know.

exchange? Want to find special hard-to-locate titles?

If so, check out this small cyberventure:

A network to share information about books in Goa, to exchange surplus
copies of books, to trade (buy or sell) books, and generally promote
more interest in books related to Goa. The co-founders of this group
are Frederick Noronha of Goa1556 http://goa1556.goa-india.org and

From: "Roland Francis"

That Canada lives under the wings of the USA is an urban myth and one
that I am glad you brought up, allowing me to debunk it.

Mario responds:

Roland,

Baseless assertions, unfounded in fact, do not debunk anything. Everyone knows
that Canada depends on the USA even for those who want to live and but are
trapped in health care waiting lines.

Here is a list of your incredible assertions, with my comments interspersed,
followed by some real examples of American altruism:

1. Pierre Trudeau a francophone, firmly established the independence of Canada
in the comity of nations and made it respected, strong and a byword for
fairness.

MG Comment: You must be kidding. Perhaps you haven't been there long enough
to know that your head of state is an aging while lady from Britain.

2 a. As far as defence goes, until the follies of the post Jean Chretien
administrations of fighting the Afghan war as a proxy of the United
States, Canada was never on any terrorist shortlist.

2b. There will never be any threat to Canada from other nations because of
its geographical isolation and its policies.

MG Comment: Why would any terrorist bother about a country that is happy to
allow them free reign to terrorize anyone they want around the world?

3. The USA pushed NAFTA down Canada's throat and in the name of
preferential trade, made it a branch plant of the United States. In
the name of buying our lumber and our oil, the US emasculates us.

MG Comment: Doesn't this contradict your previous assertion of not-so-fierce
sovereignty and independence? BTW, how does a buyer emasculate a willing
supplier of goods and services?

4. but who says that we cannot export to the rest of the world what we now
export solely to the United States? Who says we should not form strategic trade
alliances with Europe, Asia and South America?

MG Comment: The fact that you haven't done so.

5. Poof, Mario we are under no body's wing. We don't need the USA - they
need us. If only our short-sighted politicians could see that.

MG Comment: So, let me see, a) Canada pays obeisance to an aging white British
lady as their head of state, b) no self-respecting terrorist bothers about
Canada because Canada does not object to what they do, and c) the US has
"emasculated" Canada and "forced" NAFTA down its throat, even though it is a
brave, sovereign and independent country that doesn't need NAFTA but signed it
anyway.

I think you have my case for me, better than I could.

Oh, regarding American altruism, beyond the voluntary expenditure of lives and
treasure in the epic liberation of 50 million Muslims from Muslim tyrants,
being first on the scene to rescue Indonesians after the tsunami, helping
mostly-Muslim Kosovo and Albania become and maintain Independence in the face
of opposition by the feckless Europeans, face down the entire world to provide
India with the ability to be self-sufficient in nuclear electric power, here is
a little tidbit that you may not have been made aware of in the fiercely
anti-liberation-for-others Canadian media, with the exception of

The ongoing war of words between Miguel Braganza and Sebastian Borges over the
use of the prefix "Prof" by Sebastian Borges seems a futile war. I see it as an
issue of "technicality" and possibly the "confusing" over the usage of Konknni.
Borges has maintained and provided a "dictionary" meaning to his use of the
word 'pra.' which is short for 'pradhyapak.
His claim that the dictionary says the word means "professor, lecturer." I
would say that Borges is taking the "dictionary" meaning to his advantage.
Would it not be better if Borges uses no prefix? I have seen professors write
their name without the prefix "Prof." Some holders of Ph.D put their degrees as
a "suffix." If Borges has been called a "prof" by students and general public,
it is not his fault.
The late Joaquim Antonio Fernandes, a Konknni scholar, was called "Prof." I
myself called him professor. I posed questions on Konknni grammar to him when
we often met at the Ave Maria Press in Sonapur, Mumbai.
If I remember correctly he was called professor because I was told he taught
Konknni to seminarians. I got his phamlet, Konkani Nad-Xastr, which I studied
well when I was a youth. Similarly, I also followed Poilem Pustok published by
Ave Maria Press.
Just for the sake of information, Prof. George Mark Moraes, the noted Goan
historian, wrote a fine tribute to JA Fernandes on the latter's death in The
Examiner. Prof. Moraes called the other "prof" a "Man of Konkani Letters." I
once asked a prominent Roman-script Konkani protogonist, who is very much in
the debate over the script issue now raging in Goa if he has read "Konknni
Nad-Xastr" and he said he had never heard of the book.
On his visit to Toronto many years ago, I asked Fr. Mathew Almeida what he
thought of the same book. Fr. Almeida told me that the book had some
"structural" problems, meaning it was not grammatical sound. It was then he
told me that he was working on a Konknni textbook.
I have written a few pieces in Konknni for The Goa Times, and Ave Maria.
However, I must admit they were written labourisly and with many English words
which the editors translated.
I lost touch with Konknni when I migrated to Canada. I have reconnected with
Konknni in Dubai and one way I thought I should keep in touch with the language
is to read Konknni periodicals. Therefore, I subscribe to Gulab.
In few weeks' time I will get the Konknni course book published by TSSK.
I have provided a little background of myself and my relationship with the
language because Borges's reply (through Fausto da Costa) that he found it
"gratifying" that "someone writing in English" (that's me) raised the question
of the usage of "y" instead of "i" and other script-related issues.
True, I have never considered myself as a Konknni writer. For this very reason,
I declined an invitation to join the Konknni Basha Mandal in Mumbai. It was
J.F. Martyres, the long-serving general secretary, who requested me to join the
executive board but I told him that it would not be okay for me to accept it.
He knew my interest in the language. I could have written more pieces in
Konknni but I could not find time working as a journalist in one of Mumbai's
English dailies, first as a freelancer during my college days and then as a
staffer. I knew that Konknni, at least then and probably true know except in
cases where Konknni writers work professionaly, it was not a "paying language."
I may have veered dramatically from the point of issue regarding the battle
over the use of "prof". Since Borges writes in both scripts, it would be nice
of him if he advocates the use of both Devnagiri and Roman scripts.
I read his writings in Roman script in Gulab, but I have not read him in
Devnagiri.
What makes him take the cause of Devnagiri alone is beyound my understanding.
Would fight a "joint cause" making him a traitor to the Devnagiri cause? This
raises another question: why at all write in Roman script?
Borges should end this obvious "dichotomy" in his attitude (one part of him
advocating Devnagiri as a sole scrip and the other part of him writing in Roman
script, which he does not want) towards the language. When it comes to Konknni
script, I can say Borges shows a "split personality."
Would the good "prof" or whatever he wants us to call him or calls himself, let
us know why it is so that he is at the crossroads of the language issue?

Dear Friend,

From our human experience we know that people call one another when they need
to get in touch or when they need something or someone. We also know that for
good communication to take place listening is essential. Listening helps us to
know and to understand others! The attitude of listening symbolizes that we
care for others; that others are important and that what they have to say is
meaningful and important. God speaks to us and communicates with us, but are we
ready to listen? This weekend let’s spend some time listening to God, for to
listen is to love! -Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 2nd Sunday of the Year ‘Speak Lord, your servant is
listening! 18-Jan-2009
1 Samuel 3: 3-19;   1 Corinthians 6: 13-20;   John 1: 35-42;

The book of Samuel offers a beautiful vocation story account. In between Moses
and Samuel the voice of prophecy was practically absent. It was rare for Yahweh
to speak but now Yahweh speaks to young Samuel. God has not abandoned his
people, he continues to reveal himself and speak to the people through the
prophets.  With Samuel a new age is beginning, God is once more breaking into
human history. It was new for Eli the priest and Samuel dedicated to the
service of the temple, so they do not understand or recognize the voice of
Yahweh. But God calls again and again, till Eli understands that this is no
ordinary human voice but the voice of God. It reminds us that the initiative of
the call comes from God and it demands a response to be freely given. God
speaks for a purpose and to understand its purpose one needs to pay attention
to His word all the time. Man’s response has to be obedience to the word and
willingness to do God’s will. “Speak Lord
 your servant is listening!”

The Quest for Jesus
Albert Schweitzer was a concert pianist in Europe who gave up his career in
music to become a doctor and work as a missionary in Africa. Albert Schweitzer
writes in his book ‘The Quest for the Historical Jesus’ Jesus comes to us as
one unknown, as he did long ago to the apostles on the seashore. He speaks to
us the same words that he spoke to them: “Follow me!” “And to those who accept
his invitation, whether they be wise or simple, young or old, he will reveal
himself to them in their toils and sufferings. And they shall learn through
their own experiences who he is.”
Mark Link in ‘Sunday Homilies’

In the second reading Paul is speaking to the Corinthians who were known for
their immoral practices and loose behaviour. In order to win them over to
Christ, Paul had to warn them and teach them to give up their immoral ways that
they had inherited from their ancestors and move over to Christ. Fornication
and sexual immorality was part of their life style and Paul had to warn them of
the danger to their faith if they held on to these former practices. Their
permissive society saw nothing wrong with their traditional sexual behaviour.
Paul reminded them that by baptism they had become a new creation and their
bodies were the temple where God abides. Therefore they had to live pure lives
and not indulge in whatever would destroy God’s abiding place.

Temple of the Holy Spirit
Once in a small town in Poland a young boy stood watching a gypsy as he drank
from a well in the town square. After drinking, the man stood there, gazing
down into the well, as though looking at someone. He was a giant, of a man but
had a friendly face. So the boy approached him and asked, ‘Who lives down
there?’ “God does’, answered the gypsy. ‘Can I see him?’ asked the boy. ‘Sure
you can’, said the gypsy. Then he took the boy into his arms, lifting him up so
that he could see down into the well. All the boy could see, however, was his
own reflection in the water. ‘But that is only me,’ he cried in disappointment.
‘All I see is me.’  ‘Ah,’ replied the gypsy, ‘now you know where Gold lives. He
lives in you.’

The gospel of today taken from John narrates how two of the disciples of John
the Baptist met Jesus for the first time. John gives the name of one of the
disciples Andrew, the other name is not mentioned. The second is in all
probability himself, or it could be deliberately anonymous, as it could stand
for anyone including you and me, disciples of the Lord! The mention of the
narrative of the vocation or first meeting is not so much to let Christians

they heartily respect their neighbour’s creed, whatever it may be. There are no
anathemas, no offenses, no slights, no comparisons, and no discriminations.
Hindu Goan, Moslem Goan and Christian Goan are cordial to one another in both
public life and private, in a manner that many other parts of the world would

This is still true of most Goan Hindus and most Goans in 2009. To think
otherwise on a whim is equally divisive and dangerous.

There is a quaint custom among Goan Catholics with regards to 'sweets'
in a family that is mourning. If there has been a recent death the
family does not prepare or buy sweets for Christmas. The neighbours,
even those who would not normally send over Christmas sweets, will
send in extra sweets to allow the family to enjoy sweets without
actually preparing or buying themselves.

Is there any single Konkani word for this custom?
Is there an equivalent in other cultures?

Cheers!

Cecil

Interesting issue, Joe. I haven't seen it for a couple of years or
more... This was written earlier this decade, can't recall when. FN

GUARDING GOA'S WALLS... FOR A HUNDRED YEARS OVER TIME

By Frederick Noronha

PANJIM (Goa): This is the story of a quaint publication; once it marked each
passing day in the life of a generation of Goans, but today is largely
forgotten.

'Almanac de Parede' is a kind of a 'wall calendar' that has completed a
quiet centenary of its publication from the South Goa town of Margao. This
event would have gone almost totally unnoticed had it not been for the
persistence of a Dutchman.

"Almanac de Parede is basically a double A3 piece of paper, printed black
and white, very traditional. The AdP listing all saints' (days) and all
feasts in all Goan parochies in all districts and some postal (and other)
info. It is available in Margao may be less outside," explains Patrice
Reimens, an Amsterdam-based researcher curious about encountering varied
cultures across the globe.

Reimes was keen to lay his hands on a couple of copies, one for a friend in
Romania, where they have "exactly the same, typically Catholic thing".

But, in the past, the almanac wasn't just a quaint collectors item. At its
peak it sold some 5000 copies, according to 74-year-old Elsa Correia,
daughter of the founder of this publication, Joaquim Filipe Roque Correia,
who first published it in the year 1903.

It is still published in the Portuguese language, probably one of the very
few publications in Asia in that language. Goa's last Portuguese-language
daily, O Heraldo, shifted to the English language in 1983, due to dwindling
readership in the tongue of the former colonial rulers of what currently is
India's smallest state.

Elsa Correia, fighting shy of the publicity and the credit for carrying out
the publication, says after the death of her father, it was run by her late
brother Domingos. She has taken over the reigns, "not as a business, but
just to continue and serve the readers", as she put it.

"He (my father Joaquim Correa) was a calendarist -- and knew everything
regarding calendards, including religious calendars. He was the proprietor
of Tipografia Progressa ('Tipography' is Portuguese for 'printing press')
located behind Margao's Holy Spirit Church," Correia recalls.

After his death in 1968, it was continued by his son, pharmacist Domingos
Coreia. "It contains many useful information, and it is the only annual
publication in Portuguese language in Goa. I've received letters from Italy
and elsewhere (voicing interest about it)", she says.

Currently the print-run is 1500 copies. Much of the calendar focuses on
giving a run-up on which saint's feast falls on which day of the year. There
are also details of the full moon, new-moon and quarter-moon dates, feasts
of various churches and 'zatras' (temple festivals) around Goa, postal
rates, bank and commercial holidays.

In the past, it cost 25 paise. Today, the price is six rupees for the single
newspaper-sized sheet, printed on one side.

Septuagenarian Correa says she doesn't have a calculation of the time spent
to bring out this publication. "I sit anytime and do it, and need to see
other calendards or consult those (knowing accurately) Hindu festive days.
Some feasts change their dates, so as to fall on a Sunday. But in villages
like Chandor, the feasts are always fixed," she adds.

She says the press run by the family once brought out other publications.
But it became old and there was "nobody interested in supervising". The
earlier generation has to cope with advancing age, and youngsters are not
necessarily interested.

"He (my father) taught me about calendaring. Now I need to revise (those
principles)," she jokes.

As if to mark the changing times, there is a new set of calendars in Goa.
But these are more likely to be in Marathi or English, only a few published
in Goa, and many coming from the much larger and more-vibrant publishing
houses of nearby Maharashtra, focussing primarily on an area which is
culturally not wholly dissimilar from t

Have The Catholic Goan Weddings Lost It's Charm Over The Years ?

Weddings outdo any other celebrations in Goa. This has been going on for ages
and looking back at things, I feel sad to say that the Catholic Goan Weddings
have lost it's charm over the years. I would like to bring forth the customs,
traditions and oneness of not just the community but of the whole area coming
together and celebrating the "event". I am sure, in different parts of Goa there
might have been different sets customs or traditions or rituals. I am talking
of the normal weddings, we had in our village of NUEM, Cabo-de-Rama.

Once the wedding date was set, the hectic preparations would get underway, to
get the house painted, set dates with tailors to come home and stitch dresses
for the bride and the whole family, so too at the grooms place, then one had to
run around, to get the required documents for the civil registration, once
documents were ready the next step would be to set the date for the civil
registration, wherein mostly, only the immediate family members of both parties
would be present, followed by a meal together, that the groom would willingly
pay for. The next step would be, the letter taken form the Registrar, to be
given to the Parish Priest for the announcement of the "3-chitteo", to be read
on three consecutive Sundays, it was customary at our place for the bride to
wear the "chudo" heap of multi coloured glass bangles on both hands prior to the
first "chitt", it was "mama's" (mom's bro) responsibility to "decorate" the arms
of the bride with "chudo", next step is the day of the "1st chitt", after the
reading of the "chitt" the bride/groom is directly taken to her/his "mama's
house and she/he has to drink a glass of water, juice or "peje udok" (kunjie
water) offered by the "mama".

After the 1st chitt, the whole village use to be a buzz with "kusur pusur"
(whispered talk) regarding the bride or the groom and their wedding, some good,
some gossip and for most, excitement. Next step is buying clothes for the bride
and family members, mostly all the Aunts were given a sari each and first
cousins are given dress pieces or pant pieces. The "mama" also presented the
bride with a red or red and white coloured cotton dress piece called the "sallo"
to be worn (home dress) on the on the second day at the brides place. Next the
tailor was brought and when the "sallo" material was cut, fire crackers were lit
to herald the cutting of "mama's sallo", in the mean time the bride would be
busy getting her "dennem" ready, clothes, bed sheets, pillow cases, towels,
kerchiefs, etc. The gold jewelry and rest of the things if any were kept ready
much before the big day.

Next came the physically taxing and very complex process of personal invitations
to all the relatives close or distant, it doesn't matter, this had always been a
very sensitive issue, all through the years till today, and if you missed
someone even unknowingly, God forbid The so called "relations" would never
let you forget the folly till you died.

About 10 to 12 days before the wedding, the "roshie" is put up, a few square
meters of land is cleared and cleaned, either at the back or at the side of the
house, the "roshie" is the official fire place for all the cooking for the
wedding celebrations, it has traditionally five fire wood cooking slots,
prepared with utmost care with red mud plastered on strong unmovable stones,
once this is dried up (a couple of days later) the whole "roshie" along with the
surrounding area are coated with cow dung and made to look spick and span. A
"kuris" (Cross) of "piddo" (midrib of palm leaf) was made and planted firmly
right in the middle of the back portion of the "roshie" and there is also always
a new unbaked earthen pot kept on the last cooking slot. The "rohsie" is then
covered with a "matov" sort of shade and protection of netted palm leaves on the
sides and on top supported by wooden planks. The first time the stones are
planted for the "roshie" fire crackers are lit to do the needful announcement.

Then comes the last week leading up to the wedding and the activities hit the
peak as we have "bikreanchem jevonn" where in the whole village was invited. The
night prior to the "jevonn" (around 7.30 PM) the villagers (men, women and
children) and some from the nearby villages (Hindus and Christians) come to
help to prepare the "dal" o

I think Janury 16 is Sancoale Feast Blessed Jose Vaz
Our Lady of Livra Febres at Consua (near Verna-Nagoa) usually later this month
St. Threza of Jesus feast just held in Chauri, Canacona
Feast of St. Sebastiao at some way side crosses & chapels and church on Jan 20

You can confirm or add more on the list for this month.
or send in details for next month like Carnival 21st, Feast on 2nd etc if you
know.

I wonder if the ‘Almanac de parade’ is still available in Goa ( like A3 size
large poster)
Which was the Festival guide for all including the ‘Feri; people like Khajem,
Pernim etc

Those days, a man used to come house to house for selling Almanac etc
He used to say/shout ‘Betina, Bentina, Almanac de Parade etc etc

Soon, people got betina FREE as souvenir at people’s month’s mind or
anniversary masses.

Goa is becoming the favourite hobby horse of these right-wing groups. Goa is
everything they despise, progressive, liberal and visibly Catholic. Get ready
for more and more of these Bollywood dance numbers to take place in Goa. The
way to combat this is for moderate Hindus of Goa to get together and run these
organisations out of Goa. There is no place for these people in Goa.
Incidentally, I came across this letter from an American newspaper in 1961. It
was written by George O. Fowler.

“But the Hindu Goan is Goan first and then Hindu. He does not in his heart
regard his Christian or Moslem neighbor as a stranger to be despised…It is an
amazing characteristic of Goan life, that as keenly religious as the Goans are,
they heartily respect their neighbour’s creed, whatever it may be. There are no

What a long way we have come from 1961.

Best,
Selma

MONDAY MUSE (12 January 2009)

THE BELL

Zen stories have been a big favourite with me. They highlight profound truth in
very few words. One story tells of a new student seized by a sincere desire to
learn. At the very first meeting with his master, he asked how he should
prepare himself for his training. "Think of me a bell," the master explained.
"Give me a soft tap, and you will get a tiny ping. Strike hard and you'll
receive a loud, resounding peal."

Life is like that. To make the most of it, we must give it our all. We need to
be unbridled in our attitude and make the most of every prospect that comes our
way. Somebody said it so well, “If it is going to be, it is up to me.” So the
next time, we see the bell of opportunity, let’s realise that our strike will
decide the resonance.

To BE BETTER at striking the bell of potential expectation…
Let’s remember that it is we who control the reverberation!

My dear brothers and sisters.
Today the Roman Catholic Church speaks about the baptism of Jesus. At thirty
Jesus received baptism. He wanted to be baptised and be with the Lord. It was
here that God openly declared that Jesus was the son of God. We were baptised
when we did not know anything. What does baptism mean to us ? Practically
nothing for we are not born with the Lord. For Roman Catholics the religion
means studying something by heart and reciting like a parrot. We were
forcefully asked to study cathesism. How many of us really know the meaning of
living God ? We still believe in statues and give so much importance that the
word of God mean nothing to us. That is the reason there is practically no
change with each and every one who visit the catholic church. Had we to read
the scriptures and nourished by the words in that we would be another person
altogether. We are the same persons from the time we were born. We are parrots
who can recite everything while our hearts are filled with dirt. How many of us
really know who Jesus is ? Jesus is the son of man born to a virgin through the
power of God. Jesus is the way of life and those who go to him will be saved
because he is the gap between man and God. Only those who believe in Jesus
believe in God and only those who have faith in Jesus have faith in the one who
have sent him. The bible gives us strength. It gives us peace. It gives us
courage to live into this troubled world. Many of our sicknesses and worries
would have blown away only if we knew there was the creator who gave you life
and promised to look after you. Only if we knew that just as we think we love
God whom we cannot see we had to love His creations the world would have been a
better place to live. Today we have faith in man rather than God. Jerimias
chapter 12 tells us what happens when we have too much trust in Man and have
trust in God. Do we have time to read then read Jerimias chapter by chapter and
see what the Lord has to say. Jermias was found talking directly to God and God
was talking to him too. Instead of reciting unwanted prayers half of it we are
not aware what we are saying it is better to close our eyes and just think of
our loving God and talk to Him and tell him what you want. Our father which we
recite like parrots during rosary, funerals and every time we think we can pray
has many steps.

Heart to Heart
By Ethel Da Costa

Peace for Jonathan and fish for the meek
By Ethel Da Costa
.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull has a strange way of pulling me
out of my hole
time and again
mind-boggling aerodynamics in my mind
teasing me with phrases
weaving words in my brain
again and again
dreams of flying
so high you could burn your wings.
'Hey, quit it, will you?'
'Have you seen what time of the night it is?'
'I'm stuffed and I want to sleep.'

Pleasantly
patiently
flight by flight
spilling ink
setting a trap
squawks of joy resounding in my head
my heart
crashing and picking
heading for starlight.
'Hey, watch it, showoff! You're gonna land on your face!'
but I know I won't
and even if I do
He will pick me up
again and again
seventy times seven
till my sins are washed by the blood of the loving father.

So, let me tell you a little story
of Jonathan who jumped out of the black hole
and ate up my fish.

He said I could fly.
He said I was free...

(Eve's Revenge: Stories of Nemesis/Broadway Book Centre/Panjim/2008)

Dear Jesus,

I know time is just a blink of your eyelash, but it's a brand New Year and I'm
sending you a big hug. Make that three, from your two guardians living in my
home
and since my Mom will now complain, one from her too. I don't know about my
neighbour, but I had a blissful, peaceful Christmas traveling back into the
bosom of
my childhood recollections, watching bright stars dot the dark blanket of the
night
sky as the chill of the evening spread its hands all over the grass and
twinkling
fairy lights of my village. A soft breeze danced through the palm leaves, a
sliver
of the moon hanging just there waiting for our courtyard to burst into
firecrackers..while little children in my family home rushed to place your baby
image into the spanking crib and its prickly new sprouting millet (ragi) grass.

As everyone ripped apart the presents under the Christmas tree, and me, mine as
well, a flashlight buzzed in my head as a note caught my attention. It was a
letter
marked to me. The envelope simply read: The Optimist's Creed. As I picked it
up, a
shot of adrenalin boosted through my veins..

It read: I Promise Myself by philosopher Christian D Larson.
* To be so strong that nothing can disturb my peace of mind.
* To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person I meet.
* To make all my friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
* To look at the sunny side of everything and make my optimism come true.
* To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the
best.
* To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own.
* To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements
of the
future.
* To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living
creature I meet.
* To give so much time to improving myself that I have no time to criticize
others.
* To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too
happy
to permit the presence of trouble.
* To think well of myself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud
words,
but in great deeds.
* To live in the faith that the whole world is on my side, so long as I am true
to
the best that is in me.

As my tired head hit the pillow that late night, it was a dreamy sleep that
woke me
up to the sound of my mother waking me to go to church. As my cousin rang her
beautiful voice in gratitude to you, I found myself crying into my daughter's
borrowed handkerchief. How beautiful is your unconditional love and your
lessons in
humility. You never fail to simply amaze me with your simplicity. So, when the
stresses of life and work snatch my precious hours of sleep, I try hard to hold
on
to the calming murmurs of your lullaby, sometimes drowning the yelling in my
head
for deadlines and reports, with your simply truth that the material world
belongs to
those who seek glory of the body.. How amazing to be swaddled by nothing, but
the
warmth of love and hay for someone as mighty and learned as you. How amazing to
have
you in my life.

It's strange, isn't it, how people think they need to go to `holy' places to
seek
you, while you continue to live in our midst.I have since decided that nothing
else
matters, than to find peace with oneself on a day-to-day promise that I will be
good
to myself, for only when you love yours

From: "Arwin Mesquita"
Subject: [Goanet] Thanks for Goa

Dear Goanetters,

Arwin has wonderfully summed up the present pseudo scenario, created by our
elite corrupt politicians, that's very much eminent in Goa at the moment. They
leave no stone unturned to make people believe, that what they are doing in the
name of development, is good for Goa and Goans, and are trying to pursue their
evil goals through whatever means, like fear, money, intimidation and even
harassment. They have the money, muscle and the law with them.

A lot of people are still confused and their minds are still paralyzed, may be
from fear or the repercussions, that may come their way, if opposed to the power
of the politicians. If we let fear rule us, is life worth living ? We all know
the saying, united we stand and divided we fall, if we stand united, no one will
dare touch us, instead of drinking our own tears, let us stand united with the
people who are willing to fight for us and support them, to support our genuine
causes.

We may have to sacrifice a few things, but I am sure, through the sacrifices
will come joys in abundance. Don't loose hope when the corrupt system tries to
use delaying and intimidating tactics but should show all the more resolve to
fight and overcome the obstacles.

At this moment I remember a poem that I had read in College and I have still
preserved it in my file with all my certificates -

It's All In The State Of Mind

"If you think you are beaten, you surely are,

If you think you dare not, you better don't;

If you think you'd like to win but you can't, It's almost a "cinch" you won't

If you think you'll lose, you've already lost,

For out in the world you'll find success begins with a fellow's will.

It's all in the state of mind.

Full many a race is lost, ere even a race is run,

And many a coward fails, ere even his war's begun.

Think big, and your deeds will grow,

Think small and you fall behind,

Think that you can, and you surely will;

It's all in the state of mind.

If you think you are outclassed, you surely are,

You've got to think high to rise;

You've got to be sure of yourself before you can win a prize.

Life's battle doesn't always go to the strongest or the fastest man,

But sooner or later, the man who wins is the fellow who thinks HE CAN.

It's all in the state of mind."

Let's all fortify with a will to win and strengthen our resolve to fight on, no
matter what "prism effect" the politicians throw at us. Lets all stand in unison
with the Activists and help them to help us save Goa for us and for our future
generations.

In fact Jews and Muslims share many common similarities.
Vinay : This is untrue. The fact is,  on closer examinations  it  is Hindus who

Both Hindus  and Jews are  ancient civilizations, with a long  and  illustrious
history  which dates  back thousands of years.  Both emerged into an era of
post-colonial sovereignty from British rule which left lasting imprints on the
two nascent independent societies.
Both religions maintained  a strong commitment to values of tolerance,
pluralism and liberty in domestic political environments. Both had to undergo
brutal homicide,  Jews in the hand of  Nazi Hitler  and  Hindus by barbaric
Muslim invaders followed by Portuguese and British colonialists.
Both these religions  maintained  glorious  Diaspora  mostly  in the United

the Old Testament eg: Jacob and Yacub, Abraham and Ibrahim, Joseph and Yusuf.
Vinay : These can be few similarities between Muslims and Jews but on the

Another commonality between India and Israel is that both countries  have

In the nineteen century, many University scholars and researchers in Western
Europe took keen
interest in the philosophies of the Eastern world. First they learnt the
local languages and became
expert linguists. then they studied the sacred scriptures and translated
them in English language.
They did not necessarily looked at the eastern world through Vatican or
Church of England eyes.
Collectively they were known as Orientalists. Most of the Hindu scriptures
which were in Sanskrit
language were not easily accessible to Hindus in general. Only when these
English translations
were available the Hindus of India became more familiar with their
religious traditions.
Richard Francis Burton was one of the Orientalists.

January 9th Jan 09 saw all Legislatures past and present celebrating this day
at the Assembly Complex.A talk on government, police and common citizens
security concerns by the Chief Secretary and IGP was organised. This would be a
good occasion to talk about how to improve quality of debate and service to
people they represent and such matters.
But No!  What is reported  discussed is the usual yearly Resolutions coming out
regarding  further hike in pensions,salaries/perks, and now allotment of plots
and computers for all! There is nothing about improving parliamentary
procedures  for the aam admi. Newspaper reports indicate former
ministers, parliamentary secretaries add to the list of security police have to
provide in addition to for example 33 Nos for the Speaker and 37 Nos for the CM
whilst the  North and South Goa police Commands have only 13 and 14  cops
respectively to spare for the aam admi ! This makes people angry and is not
acceptable!

The Rustic in Townsman

EDITORIAL
Posted on 2009-01-12

THE removal of 'gadas' from Panaji?s streets at the directive of the High Court
provides a golden opportunity for city planners and administrators to do
something
on a permanent basis in order to rid the capital city of the ?gada nuisance?.
We do
not mean any disrespect to the livelihood or social status of those who own and
operate those mobile-turned-immobile kiosks. They are mostly people who earn a
low
income from retailing various products or selling homemade snacks. We have all
the
sympathy for them. Those who have been removed ? must be rehabilitated the
soonest
possible. It would be better and more wholesome if the High Court could
simultaneously have the authorities give a deadline and blueprint for
rehabilitation. The gada owners live from day to day, and many of them might
already
be financially troubled by the loss of business for so many days. Their
rehabilitation has to be taken up on an urgent basis and not left to
bureaucratic
mercies that could take a generation for the alternative to materialize ? and
most
likely unsatisfactorily.

We have to understand that roadside kiosks or carts or footpath vendors are a
creation of a centuries-old culture that has seen markets in our country only
in
that form. Malls, stores and pucca shopping streets are of recent origin, and
people
still do not find it as comfortable to shop at these centres as at a market
which
resembles more like the weekly or biweekly haat that used to be held in
different
parts of the state. Organised shops in a concrete ambience have a formal code,
whereas these village haats had a totally informal atmosphere. The gadas and
footpath vendors are there therefore because a large number of people are
culturally
attuned to patronise them.

The gadas being a two-way affair ? that is, a large number of people
patronising
them and a number of poor people finding low-income self-employment ? the High
Court
and the authorities would be ignoring a very important part of the shopping and
vending culture we have had for ages. It is a cultural trait of the people that
needs to be preserved, rather than bulldozed by the concrete, formal and
forbidding
store culture. This trait may not show in any architectural or art form, but it
is
still heritage and in a land that is inspired by Gandhi must be respected and
promoted.

We should set three objectives for ourselves: One, rid the Panaji streets and
footpaths of all gadas. Two, provide the displaced gadas an alternative site.
Three,
provide their clientele continued enjoyment of easy and informal shopping at
those
gadas. By fulfilling these three objectives we will be taking care of all the
three
concerns: The integrity of capital?s streets, the livelihood of the gada owners
and
the cultural trait of the people. Let the city planners find one or more sites
where
the gadas must be located together. The selection of the sites must be done
keeping
in view the accessibility to the shopping people. These sites, once the gadas
are
in, would look like another municipal market but then that is what a majority
of
people feel comfortable with.

Once all the gada owners displaced by the current drive have been rehabilitated
in
such sites, there must not be any gada allowed ever on the streets of the city.
If
any poor person wants to have a roadside business, he should be asked to look
around
anywhere else in the state but not in Panaji. If other cities and towns also
follow
Panaji and locate their roadside vendors in one or more sites, the new
entrepreneur
wanting to set up a gada should take a seat in one of those sites and not on
the
streets of Margao, Porvorim or Canacona.

The state and city authorities may take advantage of some of the schemes of the
central government in tackling this problem. For instance, the Union Ministry
for
Food Processing Industries is ready to grant a financial assistance of Rs 5
crore to
Goa for setting up a ?Food Street? in the state. Why do not the state
authorities
find a site in Panaji for a ?Food Street? to rehabilitate food gadas? It would
help
residents get a wide range of and more hygienic food at one location.

Spurt In Ore Demand Recharges Mining

Navhind Times 11 Jan 09 by Michael Fisher

"Mining activity in Goa has picked up considerably due to a push in demand for
iron ore and this is good news to the truckers and barges serving the industry."

Reference to the above, what can I say in this time of utter chaos in the world
markets ? Oil that had reached over 150 $ a barrel, is now around 40$ after
seeing through the 30's, OPEC at once pulled back it's jockeys and cut down it's
production to create a sort of shortage to demand, whereas in Goa, our mine
owners backed by our like minded bureaucrats want to empty our nature given
coffers of ore in a hurry. One can easily notice, greed prevailing logic.

This particular article posted on none other than the "miners" favouring daily,
but says nothing about the good news for the miners but goes on to say , good
news for the truckers and the barge serving industry, who the hell owns major
chunk of these two transporter facilities ? How many Goan (Aam Aadmi) own these
trucks or the barges ?

With the increase in mining activity, more ferocity will be unleashed on both
men and mother earth a like, dig deeper into the earth's crust making it more
vulnerable, more slit will be deposited in our water bodies choking their
natural flow, more and more water bodies will be polluted and affected, more
wells will run dry, ecology along with the our flora and fauna will be
desecrated even further, even more of our fertile fields will be turned in to
impotent barren waste lands, our already pathetic roads, depleted even further
giving rise to more accidents and fatalities, our beautiful houses will look
like the dust bags in a "hoover", not say the least about our lungs and the
increase in lung related diseases - IS THIS GOOD NEWS FOR THE AAM AADMI ?
Who are you kidding Mr. Fisher ?

Late Dr Jack Sequeira, former leader of Opposition of Goa is regarded as
Father of the politically crucial Opinion Poll. It was because of him and
many others that Goa is a separate state today and Goans "at least today"
have a separate identity. In his respect, many people including current
MLA's consistently honour him & appreciate him for his efforts for Goa &
Goans; but the irony is that, these very same MLA's are actually working to
destroy the very Goan Identity, Dr. Sequeira worked so hard to save. If
these MLA's want to truly honour him, they should fight for the same cause
he fought for, namely Goan Identity!!
