Pope Set to Make First Trip to Africa

Francis X. Rocca

March 16, 2009/VATICAN CITY (RNS)

-- When Pope Benedict XVI visits Africa for the first time as pope later this
month, he will be visiting the region that has produced the greatest growth for
the Catholic Church -- and some of its greatest challenges.
Benedict's March 17-23 visit to Cameroon and Angola will celebrate what has
become the church's most fertile mission field, and ground zero for ongoing
tension with the continent's other fast-growing faith, Islam.
Over the course of the 20th century, the Catholic population of sub-Saharan
Africa grew from less than 2 million to nearly 140 million.
Last month, the Vatican reported that the continent was producing priests at a
higher rate than any other part of the world, with ordinations rising by 27.6
percent in 2007.
The pope has praised African Catholicism as a model from which the religion's
traditional heartland should draw inspiration.
"To see that there isn't only a tired church, as we often find in Europe, but
also a youthful church, full of joy of the Holy Spirit, is certainly a
spiritual refreshment," Benedict told a gathering of priests in Rome last month.
Benedict will start his week-long visit in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde,
where he will meet with African bishops and preview an upcoming Vatican synod
on "reconciliation, justice and peace."
The pope will presumably address the armed conflicts that have plagued so much
of the continent, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a
decade-long civil war has left an estimated 5.4 million people dead.
Benedict is likely to join other church leaders in stressing the need to
transcend longstanding tribal animosities, a continuing source of civil
tensions and violence.
"I am also hoping that the Holy Father will talk about issues of governance,
the democratic process, and corruption," said the Rev. Patrick Lafon, a former
Secretary General of the Cameroonian bishops' conference, who noted that his
country's ruler, President Paul Biya, has been in power since 1982.
"One cannot underestimate the moral authority of the Holy Father," Lafon said.
"Our leaders will not necessarily follow what he says, but it will be on the
record."
While in Cameroon, Benedict will meet with representatives of the country's
Muslim minority, which at 22 percent of the population is a little more than
half as large as its Christian counterpart. (Adherents of traditional African
religions account for the rest.)
Interfaith relations in Cameroon are generally stable, Lafon said, but in
neighboring Nigeria, hundreds have died in recent fighting between Muslims and
Christians.
Because of its proximity to some of the areas hardest hit by desertification,
including Sudan, Cameroon will offer the pope a natural occasion to discuss the
humanitarian impact of climate change, said Msgr. Robert J. Vitillo, an
American priest who works with the Catholic aid network Caritas Internationalis.
"I also hope that the Holy Father talks about the even deeper levels of poverty
that we can expect in Africa as a result of the global economic crisis,"
Vitillo said.
In Angola, Benedict will mark 500 years of Christianity in sub-Saharan Africa
in the country that received the first Catholic missionaries.
Benedict's presence in southern Africa could also highlight the church's fight
against HIV/AIDS. Although Angola's own rate of HIV prevalence is relatively
low at 2.5 percent of the adult population, in some part of the region that
figure tops 30 percent, Vitillo said.
Catholic agencies around the world provide more than 25 percent of care of
those with HIV/AIDS, according to the Vatican. Yet the church's activities have
drawn criticism from those who say that its prohibition of condoms undercuts
prevention efforts.

[Goanet] Dubai bars dancing, kissing, & holding hands in public

2009-03-16 Thread Blasio Fernandes

Yes, accepted.. Dubai is bad as a lot of goanetter has put it,, people
being ill treated especially the labour class.. A lot of atrocities
being done to the expat community.. True .. Very true.. But look at the
flip side of it.. Has the labour class stopped coming to Dubai because
it ill treats them ? NO. And one reason for that is they do not have
any other alternative... and if someone has an alternative, kindly let
the labour class know abt it.. Atleast it will save them from the
atrocious treatment they get in Dubai.

I have been in the gulf for over 12 years, not because I love being
here. I am here by choice. And every expat who resides here has made
that choice. People choose for different reasons; Some may be here
because that like the place, its luxuries, opulance et al but many are
here because it allows their families back in their country to have a
decent living, a roof over their head, a meal or two on their table ,
clothes to cover themselves and to give their children the best
education they can afford . Thousands of expats from the subcontinent
slog it out in the gulf to give their families a better life.

For your kind information, UAE is not known to behead or stone a person
to death.. Sharia law is not implemented the same way its implemented in
Saudi Arabia and when ever people have received tough sentences that's
because they asked for it.

Shouting from the rood tops "DEMOCRACY ! DEMOCRACY" doesn't pay.. In
these mordern times, an over dose of so called democracy has given rise
to currupt politicians, yobs, holiganism and... did I miss any ??

[Goanet] SHARAD PAWAR OUT FOR A DUCK

2009-03-16 Thread Vinay Natekar
Another example of cunning trick played by Antonia Maino aka Sonia
Gandhi was during NDA regime , when candidate for Presidential post was
being considered P.C. Alexender a respected person who served under
Congress as Governors to States as well as principal Secretary to PM was
short listed by NDA. They wanted him to be elected unopposed and sought
help of Congress party. This move was opposed by Sonia Gandhi since she
was aspiring for Prime Ministerial post and she thought in a Hindu
majority India it would be awkward to have Christians for both
positions of President and Prime Minister.

Maharashtra?s foxy politician Sharad Pawar knows that the clock is
ticking.
The 2009 elections may be the last chance to fulfill his long standing
dream
of becoming the Prime Minister. Knowing he is on a sticky wicket his
craving
to be PM in all probability will remain a dream despite all the
political
batting, balling and fielding that the former BCCI president is up to.

God alone knows whether Sonia?s decision to make Pratibha Patil India?s
President was a game plan to seal the hope of another Maharastrian vying
for
the PM?s job.

Sharad Pawar who spends more time over cricket than politics should have
got
his priorities right. As India?s Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar?s
performance has been dismal. If Laloo Prasad Yadav could put the Indian
Railways on track he would surely out beat Sharad Pawar in resurrecting
India?s granary.

Dear Mario,

If you believe in the blogs that suit you, it is up to you. The same stands
for me. One can not judge for others and therefore, let us keep our beliefs to
ourselves. Leave the future to the concerned.

Mario responds:

Dear MD,

You can believe whatever you like. You are entitled to your own opinions but
not to your own facts.

I try to deal in facts and logical analysis and quote qualified and respectable
journalists and analysts who know what they are talking about based on what I
believe are the principles and practices that made America the economic engine
that it has been, which Obama is now trying to destroy, in my never humble
opinion.

Here is another example:

Dick Morris was one of President Bill Clinton's closest political advisors and
helped Clinton fool people and keep his poll numbers high while also helping
him survive most of his personal pecadilloes. He was thus aware of everything
that went on in the Clinton administration.

He has since turned against the Democrats because he feels they are soft on
national defense, naive on terrorism and radical Islam, make false moral
equivalences between Israel and the radical Arabs, and have been co-opted by
the far left wing and financiers behind the scenes like George Soros on
domestic policy issues.

Here is Morris' analysis of President Obama's performance so far, which
provides a different perspective from a Washington insider than the tingly
feelings that some Goanetters feel when they hear the Messi.., ...er, President
Obama read from his teleprompter, without ever looking at his audience.

http://www.dickmorris.com/blog/2009/03/16/boggled-bam-can-president-get-job-done/#more-559

Excerpt:

It was Clinton-era Housing Secretary Henry Cisneros who urged Fannie Mae to
spend 42 percent of its money buying mortgages for lower-income people and who
suggested that they no longer require down payments. And it was his successor,
Andrew Cuomo, who upped the ante to 50 percent of the Fannie Mae portfolio.

After Democrats inveigled people to buy homes they could not afford, how can
they justify passing a plan that excludes them from assistance?

It appears that Obama is at sea when it comes to financial policy,
economic-recovery planning and credit-rescue efforts. We’re stuck not only with
a socialist but seemingly an incompetent one.

The heady cocktail of Republican bile that Mario drinks has finally taken its
toll. Mario, if you knew anything about the Arabs, you would not post such
utter rubbish on Goanet. Ofcourse, if the Republicans knew anything about the
world, besides oil, perhaps they wouldn't charge into other countries trying to
"liberate them".

Mario responds:

Doesn't this take the cake? A woman coming to the defense of Arabs, most of
whom would consider her a second class citizen, and have up to three more like
her in the wings. Of course, no specifics are proffered, just a non-specific
and mean-spirited rant about "Republicans". Selma has no way of knowing my
political affiliation, other than I am anti-communist and anti-socialist and
anti-dictator and anti-tyrant and anti-Messiah-complex and
anti-people-who-say-one-thing-and-do-the-opposite.

Memo to self: Investigate how Selma has come to be so traumatised by
Republicans:-))

To begin with, it is the heady cocktail of Republican bile that caused
President Bush 43 to lead the campaign to liberate 50 million Muslims in Iraq
[virtually completed] and Afghanistan [work in progress] from Muslim tyrants,
while Selma and her ilk, which included the feckless western Europeans and the
Democrat leadership, stood on the sidelines and cheered for the Bush-led
campaign to fail, which would have continued the oppression of so many millions
of Muslims. That's how much concern she has for innocent Muslims.

Now they have a chance for self rule, peace and prosperity, which is being
delayed by other radical Muslims aided and abetted by the immoral support of
people like Selma who rant and rave about the liberators, while giving the
previous oppressors a pass.

Secondly, it seems like her sources of information have not informed her that
it is the Democrats who are currently charging into Afghanistan and Pakistani
Waziristan. So much for her knowledge of American politics.

Thirdly, beyond her gross generalitties, she has not rebutted a single point in
my list of reasons suggesting why radical Arabs prefer the afterlife to their
current one.

Fourthly, she seems to have missed Ruby's excellent summary, which said it
better [see below] than my satirical outline, which seems to have gone right
over Selma's angry head:-)) Or, did she miss the fact that Ruby was speaking
about the same part of the world I was joking about? Or did Ruby's summary
leave Selma uncharacteristically speechless?:-))

Since Selma apparently knows the Arabs so well, perhaps she can explain to us
their preference for killing themselves when attempting to kill others, mostly
innocent civilians who happen to be Muslims.

Both messages touched my heart. I feel the same frustration and anger that
we are ruled by the worst elements in our midst.

Danny Boyle had the reputation to make Slumdog Millionaire into a worldwide
topic of discussion. He cannot solve the problems of slums in Bombay if
Bombay's "leaders" remain complacent and indifferent to the fate of the
poor. I used to be a bleeding heart activist for affordable living. My
neighbours, even my friends, and especially Thatcher's "children" did not
give a damn. They thought membership of the EU would protect them, wishful
thinking is another delusion that afflicts the greedy.

Readers' responses from around the world to the NY Times article of
malnutrition was invaluable. In UK poverty is also ignored by posture
politicians, who are no different to Indian ones. Senior citizens suffer
malnutrition everywhere because their incomes are not protected like civil
servants and politicians are. The standard of nursing I saw in Goa was
amazing, nothing so appropriate to patient care is available in the postcode
lottery of the NHS. Western capitalism is prevalent in India, it is called
AFFLUENZA. It has become endemic and pernicious, just as it is in India.

The poor like prostitution and indentured labour is always present across
the world. Exploitation is too easy, Politicians are parasites in my
experience. Pakistan under Benazir Bhutto's husband broke its pledge to
reinstate the judges removed by the General. One note of caution is that I
have found all political parties are great in opposition but revert to type
once elected. USA-led liberation has not brought deliverance, nor are black
South Africans better off under black rule.

Rubygoes prolific messages have too much truth in them to be comfortable. I
agree with her about domestic happiness being the key. Without unity,
persistence & perseverance at home and in the public arena no lasting
improvements happen. I remain astonished at the gullibility of voters to
preposterous blandishments of politicians, investment brokers, etc.

Everywhere I go I see discontent and resentment working both ways. The
hateful-racism in the western world which did so much damage to the psyche
of India is unabated among both UK redneck commoners and fascist Lords.
Extreme fascists are united through the internet.(I read while in Goa that
eight young Indians had been shot dead in various incidents in US).

The EU for little Britain has been a Trojan horse, not that it did not
deserve it, but the repercussions hit Indian medical staff. England prefers,
just like the Arabs, etc, white skin, even if those blond Eastern Europeans
take jobs from both black & native British.
England is doing the same as Australia, black & Indians are demonised, and
subjected to covert & overt discrimination, especially by institutions. The
right-wing media do not bother with investigative journalism. News is dumbed
down, which is why I skim national & international news. (our papers are
more comics than news disseminators).

One thought though: Is India with all its imperfections better than China,
Russia, Israel or some of the more authoritarian states?

[Goanet] SHARAD PAWAR OUT FOR A DUCK

2009-03-16 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Maharashtra’s foxy politician Sharad Pawar knows that the clock is ticking.
The 2009 elections may be the last chance to fulfill his long standing dream
of becoming the Prime Minister. Knowing he is on a sticky wicket his craving
to be PM in all probability will remain a dream despite all the political
batting, balling and fielding that the former BCCI president is up to.

God alone knows whether Sonia’s decision to make Pratibha Patil India’s
President was a game plan to seal the hope of another Maharastrian vying for
the PM’s job.

Sharad Pawar who spends more time over cricket than politics should have got
his priorities right. As India’s Agriculture Minister, Sharad Pawar’s
performance has been dismal. If Laloo Prasad Yadav could put the Indian
Railways on track he would surely out beat Sharad Pawar in resurrecting
India’s granary.

[Goanet] Goans - The Future OBCs

2009-03-16 Thread Roland Francis
Cecil Pinto in his post "East Indian Songs" provided to us on Goanet,
a very interesting glimpse into the East Indians of Bombay. I know
East Indians quite well, having lived in what was then an East Indian
village of Bombay that was over-run by the expansion of the city.
Therefore I went deeply into the link and read it all. Fascinating.

Anyone who has lived in Bombay can make a sure parallel between the
East Indians of yesterday and the Goans of today. Here are the notable
characteristics.

Lived in clean villages.
Simple, generous people.
God fearing.
Honest.
Earned a living from the land and sea.
Liquor and food, an important part of their traditions.
Celebrated religious feasts with gusto.
Sold their land.
And many many more.

The marginalization of the East Indian community of Bombay affords a
mirror to anyone who wishes to see where the Goans are going. Progress
in India is a juggernaut. The poverty and filth that accompanies it
cannot be de-linked. So also the corruption and lawlessness.

One particular section of the link struck me like a blow to the temple:

The once proud East Indians are now beggared to the extent that they
are applying for OBC (Other Backward Caste) status that carries some
crumbs of government benefits with it. This, from a community whose
tables once groaned with the weight of food and local wine. Whose
pride in themselves and their culture and tradition knew few bounds.

The link repeated:
http://www.east-indians.com/index.htm

How soon before the Goans line up for this stigma too?

In Dr Datta Samant's case, it was the Goan industrialists who stood
together! Class interests are of course thicker than blood, which in
turn is thicker than water!

Whatever one might say about the late Dr Samant's style of
functioning, his shoot-from-the-hip style of negotiations, and his
role in the deadly and gamble-that-didn't-pay-off historic Bombay
textile strike... the fact of the matter is that he delivered results
for the workers. Even if "results" was sometimes judged entirely in
terms of non-ideological, take-the-money-and-run rupee results.

I recall the panic that "Doctorsaheb's" entry into Goa caused,
including among a tyre factory, and how a section of the media was
used to discredit him.

2009-03-16 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Dr Anesimo:
During my younger days, i visited Bombay frequently. I never saw any
slums, open gutters, gangsters and rapists. During my short visits to
bombay, i lived in a posh residential area and travelled by taxis to those
relatively clean and decent areas for my shopping and entertainement. For
me, Bombay was the safest and on of the cleanest city in the world.
When i saw Slumdog Millionaire, i said it was fake!

Response:
Dotor, I do not think despite your frequent visits to Bombay, you know what
Bombay really is. Visiting Malabar Hill or Peddar Road or Marine Drive is
not Bombay. For your information, more than 60% of Bombay's population lives
in slums ie. makeshift tenements of not more than 6ft x 6ft with a tarpaulin
sheet for a roof, devoid of toilet facilities and drinking water. Dharavi
where the film was shot holds the dubious record of being the largest slum
in Asia. No visitor to Bombay can miss seeing Dharavi, as it is the first
sight that greets any visitor flying into Bombay by air.

Dharavi is inspite of this dubious record a very robust place and boasts of
intrepid entrepreneurs who have survived poverty and run several successful
businesses from here. The leather industry is very famous and one can strike
good bargains for genuine leather goods which would cost a fortune
elsewhere.

Dharavi has also become a place of tourist interest (much before Slumdog
hogged the Oscars and fame). There are regular tours conducted through the
slums by guides who can match the accents of Americans, French and Germans,
and who have never seen the insides of a school.

Believe me, what is portrayed about life in the slums is as true as the air
that you breathe. There may be a few points of exaggeration like the scene
in which Jamal jumps into the cesspool so that he can obtain the autograph
of Amitabh Bacchan, his hero. But otherwise, it is a very realistic
portrayal.

May I suggest that the next time you are in India, you take a tour of
Dharavi. It can be a very numbing experience.

Regards,

Marshall

[Goanet] Avoid sledging on forums

2009-03-16 Thread Melvyn Ferrao
My humble request to Mr. Virgincar and Mr. Rajan P to excercise restraint
while you accuse people of being fraudsters, scamsters, etc. Nobody in the
Goanet or GX forums except you know the real reason behind you sledging
against people. If you really want to bring to everyone's notice that some
people are frauds, give an appropriate justification. That at least gives
them a chance to clarify their side of things.

Mr. Rajan keeps accusing some members of the GBA of being frauds. May we all
know the details?
Such accusations only spoil the discipline of the forum and create a sledge
fest.

It is a myth that the moderators of Goanet block some posts because of their
political inclinations. I believe it is the foul language they object to.
Try posting a well-worded and cultured email without swearing. It will get
through even if it conveys a political message. If it really gets blocked,
report the matter on GX along with the original email. That will expose the
intentions of moderators if they are really malicious.

Hope you take this in good spirit.

Thanks,

Goa has irreversibly been destroyed and there are few left interested in saving
Goa and Goans. The windbags have talked a good game all along but did nothing
while Goa died. A once great land has been laid waste and is now ready for
burial. A number of people are to blame: greedy builders, the mining industry,
Goan politicians, "real-estate" agents, Goans (those who live in Goa, Goans in
India, and those abroad have all contributed to the decay).

A silver lining is some are fighting valiantly against the destruction. See:

[Goanet] News: A tribute to Jagadish Wagh (Pramod Khandeparkar in Gomantak Times)

2009-03-16 Thread Goanet News
A tribute to Jagadish Wagh

By Pramod Khandeparkar
In Gomantak Times, March 16, 2009

He was from an era when journos functioned with missionary spirit

Immediate post-Liberation era had witnessed journalistic
renaissance in Goa. Many young and some senior scribes were
engaged in the pioneering work of free press in this part of
the country, which had just shed shackles of a long colonial
rule wherein democratic values like free expression were the
victims. Consequently, if media has flourished in Goa the
credit goes largely to a strong band of committed newsmen,
who were called upon to work in different sections of
newspapers and news agencies.

Jagadish Wagh, who died a premature death after
prolonged illness and hospitalization, belonged to
this group of journalists. The scribes then were
generally ill paid and, thus, ill fed.

Yet, they functioned with a missionary spirit ignoring the
all-round prosperity. That was the time when a sub-editor or
reporter in Goa newspapers received salary much less than
even the lower division clerks in the government. There was
neither specialization nor refresher courses for journalists.
But, the reporters in particular were called upon to cover
and report all the events to their respective newspapers or
news agencies.

Wagh was not active in journalism particularly after his
retirement as the manager of the United News of India [UNI] a
few years ago. Yet, his demise has cast a gloom in the media
and social circles in the state.

This was because of his activism and association with various
socio-cultural organizations. He was an extrovert and thus he
built working relations with the people in different walks of
life. Thus, his associates and professional colleagues have
keenly felt the void created by his death.

What is important is that Wagh made a success of his
profession within a short time. I was associated with him and
Gurudas Singbal at the Navhind Times, which was the only
English daily of that time.

Wagh and Singbal were senior to me by two years. But, we had
a 44-year long association, which was fruitful. He always
kept a high profile in the society. That explains his wide
popularity among all sections of the people. And, that is how
people belonging to all walks of life rushed to his residence
after his death to express their sorrow. They all were
missing a good friend.

Wagh was like an elder brother to me because at times he
stood by me in my difficult days. No wonder, therefore, that
his death has created a void in my life. In fact, he and his
wife Mayee [Kunda] always gave their utmost affection to me
and my family.

We tried to reciprocate this sentiment in our own humble way.

He was full of ideas and would readily come out with best of
the suggestions to tide over difficulties. Singbal looked
after reporting while Wagh was attached to the desk at the
daily. I did both the jobs.

Soon, Singbal, Wagh and myself came to be acknowledged as the
indefensible troika of The Navhind Times with each of us
having made our mark through our contributions to it.

The immediate post-Liberation era was a difficult
one with Goa struggling to transit from the
erstwhile Portuguese rule to that of the Indian
system, which was largely based on the pattern
fixed by the British regime. It was a politically
  sensitive and administratively cumbersome period
and the emerging media and young journalists like
us were trying to put up with the situation and
trying to reconcile the past with the present and
  shape the future.

Journalists of our generation, thus, became the pioneers of
modern journalism in Goa. Wagh obviously had a role to play
in the given situation.

Soon there was a major upheaval in Goa with the Centre
declaring the historic Opinion Poll to decide the future
political status of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman & Diu.
Goans were given an option to decide whether they wanted to
continue with the UT status or merge with Maharashtra. The
people of Daman & Diu had the choice to decide whether they
wanted to join Gujarat or continue with the UT status.

Obviously, the entire media was drawn into the vortex of this
controversy. It was the time to educate people on the
implications of the Opinion Poll.

At The Navhind Times, the Opinion Poll coverage was divided
among all three of us i.e. Wagh, Singbal and me. Wagh was
entrusted the job of covering the anti-merger propaganda
while I was given the task of covering pro-merger campaign.
Singbal was stationed at the headquarters to monitor related
issues.

I remember Wagh and myself used to travel all over Goa and
return to the office around mid-night daily to write our
reports. Thus we could reach home only in the early hours of
the morning but again report to the duty around 10 a.m. That
was the type of work we had to do in those days.

Very soon, a new news agency called the Unit

[Goanet] Seminar on Goan Associations and clubs in Mumbai

2009-03-16 Thread Fausto Da Costa

Konkani Seminar - "Mumbointleo Goenkarancheo Sonstha Ani Goenkaranche Kudd"

GRAF in collaboration with The Goan Review and Gulab organizes a Konkani
Seminar "Mumbointleo Goenkarancheo Sonstha Ani Goenkaranche Kudd"
highlighting today's sad state of affairs of the Goan Associations in Mumbai
and the Goan Clubs and suggesting remedial measures. On Sunday the 29th.
March at 4.00 p.m. at St. Sebastian Goan High School, Dabul, (Thakurdwar)
Near Charni Road Station, Mumbai

The idendity of the Goans in Mumbai is slowly dying. The heritage that was
built by our ancestors in Mumbai - namely the Village clubs and other
institutions are dwindling in numbers. No competent and capable persons are
coming forward to run the Goan associations and Village unions. Consequently
the associations are dormant and some are running just for the name sake.

Therefore, for this reason, this seminar on "Goan Assocaitions in Mumbai and
the Goan Clubs " is being oraganised with the aim of waking up the Goans of
Mumbai. Some concerned Goans have taken steps to register the Goan clubs in
Mumbai in order to preserve them for posterity.

We are humbly calling upon all Goans to come and attend this seminar in
large numbers so that all Goans come together and discuss this matter and
come forward to take remedial measures to make our institutions and
associations vibrant once again.

There is no fee to attend this Seminar however those interested to attend
this seminar must register their names in advance.

For Registration and other details kindly contact: Gable D'Souza
(9820494439) vo Domnic D'Souza (9821752011) vo GRAF office (22630139).

Dear Freddy,

Tks once again for taking the trouble to reply to my e-mail.

Your statement
"I am a genuine equality person".

my reply -
I never judge the personality/gender/figure/intelligence of a Goanetter by the
contents of her/his e-mail.

Pls read below e-mail of Soter, it is a good reply to your below, e-mail to me.

I once asked an actor, why she allowed herself to be portrayed as the raped,
tortured, molested, prostitute female in most of her films.

Her reply was, that her money-paying, audience, consisted of nearly 70% males,
(1) whose senses were titillated, 100% when women were shown getting hurt,
tortured, mutilated etc, (2) No one wanted to see a HAPPY, successful woman in
any movie, (3) It is a case of "Paisa PHEKO, Tamasha Dekho."

I did tell her, that her audience may go home and re-create the scene with the
women in their house, she said - she does her roles for the money.

It is good to know you are promoting "slum tourism", in Goa, like nearly every
Indian state, as this gets the tourists and funding from Western countries.

I do hope that during my lifetime, I will be able to witness Madame Mayawati
taking the oath as the PM of India.

Now enough of your anti-India, anti- Goa stance, and all your negative, moaning
and groaning, give constructive ideas on Goanet, to solve the problems of Goa.

2009-03-16 Thread mario rodrigues

IF EVERY CHILD IS GROWN WITH SUCH ATTITUDES WILL THERE EVER BE A
ECONOMIC/FINANCIAL/EMOTIONAL CRISIS IN THIS WORLD?

A STORY / LESSON

Sometime ago, when the ice-cream were not so expensive, a ten-year old boy
went to an ice cream parlour. While sitting at the table, he asked the
waitress, “how much does a Sundae cost?’ “50 cents”, she replied. The book took
out his money from the pocket and began counting it. “Well, how much does a
simple ice-cream cost?” There were other people waiting to be served , so the
waiter begain to get a little impatient. “35 cents!”she replied abruptly. The
boy counted his money again and said: “Please get me a simple ice-cream!” The
waitress served him the ice-cream and his bill. The boy ate the ice-cream ,
paid his bill at the cash counter and left. When the waitress went to clean the
table she began to cry…for there, in the corner of the plate, were 15 cents…her
tip. The boy took the simple ice-cream instead of a Sundae so he could leave a
tip for her.

The Garbage and Goan politicians - the big kicks-back at cost of people's
suffering
by armstrong vaz | June 29, 2008

The Garbage About Sonsoddo

Sonsoddo is Goa’s most famous garbage dumping site. It carries 40 years of
accumulated waste. In the past year, some new forms of garbage are being added
to the pile. Read on:
The work order enabling Hyderabad-based Hyquip to takeover and manage the
Sonsoddo garbage site was issued on 11 August 2006, for a total cost of Rs.7.84
crores, 15% above the cost estimated by the consultants (Rs.6.33 crores).
Though the MMC was not consulted on the deal, it could hardly object because
neither its Chief Officer nor its councillors were concerned with the site and
the damage it had been causing to the ground water aquifers, and to the health
of the people (including school children) in the immediate area.
Earlier, for a total amount of Rs.17 lakhs spread over 1.5 years, the Goa
Foundation had cleaned up the site (40 years old), detoxified it on the
surface, erected a wall, brought water to the site, created a composting yard,
prevented the entry of stray animals and finally eliminated the fires. The
budget approved by government of Goa was Rs.25 lakhs, but the GF spent only
Rs.17 lakhs. The rest of the money was swallowed up by the Council or diverted
to other works unconnected with Sonsoddo.
At the time we were working the site, only Digambar Kamat would regularly visit
the place (in his characteristic Bermuda shorts) to check out whether we had
any problems he could help solve. Without his constant assistance, we would
have walked out of the site sooner than we actually did.

Joachim Alemao was clearly interested in putting up an expensive-looking plant.
He and Wilfred D’Souza kept fighting among themselves to solve Goa’s garbage
problem because this service to the people of Goa promised them rewards even
clean projects or large factories could not generate. Eventually, Alemao won.
For the purpose, the State Urban Development Agency (SUDA), an Alemao fiefdom,
issued a tender for selecting a consultant who would advise it on what kind of
a plant would be good for Sonsoddo and for other sites as well. After many
presentations from various sources, Mahabal Enviro Engineers Pvt Ltd from
Thane, Mumbai, were selected as consultants. They have a good reputation in the
field. We at the Goa Foundation were happy that something was finally happening.
Mahabal Enviro Engineers completed their work of surveying the garbage needs of
Margao and other towns like Ponda and submitted a report. I have a copy. The
government went ahead with issuing a tender prepared by the consultants for a
plant for the proposed site, estimating it at Rs.6.33 crores. Three companies
bid, including United Phosphorous (Gujarat), Ramky (Hyderabad) and a little
known agency called Hyquip (also Hyderabad). After assessing and evaluating the
bids, the consultants advised the government not to take up the offer of the
lowest bidder (Hyquip) because Hyquip had no experience, but to go instead for
the next highest bidder, UPIL. Mahabal said they had come to this conclusion
because:
a) Hyquip could not show that it had operated a similar plant anywhere in India
based on the technology it proposed to import from the International
Biorecovery Group in Canada.
b) The technology offered by Hyquip was for a 400 tonne capacity plant, whereas
the waste of Margao was only 40 tonnes. It appeared therefore that the
contractor was intending to set up a centralized plant for the garbage of the
entire state of Goa.
c) Hyquip had no demonstrated skill in the erection of engineered sanitary
landfills, which was half the project work.
However, as can be seen from what happened next, a deal was probably made for a
massive kickback which in the present instance, according to insiders, was
probably around 80% of the total tendered cost.
After the news concerning the Hyquip deal spilled into the public domain,
generating controversy at the huge cost quoted and tendered, the file was
dutifully sent to Vigilance. It went to Vigilance because of some allegations
that the rates followed in arriving at the tendered cost were not proper. Due
to the controversy, however, Government was unable to sign the agreement with
Hyquip (and till now, the agreement has not been signed). In legal terms, this
means that Hyquip has been working – or, as we shall see, pretending to work –
at the site at its own risk and cost.
Of the tendered amount of Rs.7.84 crores, the work order required Hyquip to do
the following preliminary work at the site for the amounts disclosed as under:
1. Reclamation work including excavation of accumulated waste and segregation
…Rs.1,42,59,000
2. Earthwork in excavation of ordinary rock …Rs.96,46,720
3. Earthwork in excavation of hard soil …Rs.30,14,600
4. Earthwork in excavation of ordinary soil …Rs.19,29,344
5. Carting away ex

Controversy-gripped Goan hotel is infamous amongst locals

By Yashodhan Jadhav | Mumbai

Speculation with regards the Goa state government passing an ordinance
to amend a 114 year old Land Acquisition Act (1894) has garnered
significant negative publicity for the Cidade de Goa hotel and caused
unrest amongst Goa's local population. Post the Supreme Court's (in
January 2009) order to demolish illegal structures within the city; the
state government has stepped up to save the hotelier's interests.

Earlier, the Cidade de Goa resort at Vainguinim Beach in Goa was asked
to demolish a part of its premises facing the beach, in order to vacate
the area for public access. While the Supreme Court demanded that the
demolition be carried out by end April 2009, the hotel promoter warned
employees about possible job cuts once the hotel is demolished. 600
employee jobs are at stake if the demolition is carried out.

The issue has also stirred unrest amongst Goa's local populace, due to
the state government's biased approach favouring the hotel. However,
none of the hotel authorities have commented about their stand post the
ordinance's announcement. Local associations like the Federation of
Small and Medium Hotels and Guest Houses of Goa (FOSAM) have also come
to the fore to protect the interests of smaller players, mainly
non-categorised hospitality units operational in Goa.

Although, star category hotels amount to a relatively small portion of
Goa's hospitality market, the lack of state government support for
smaller enterprises has resulted in socio-political turmoil (in the
state) in the wake of the upcoming Lok Sabha 2009 elections.

Earlier, it was reported that the state government planned to pass an
ordinance that will allow modification of agreements with relation to
land transfer from the government to companies. Presently, the ordinance
has been forwarded to the S S Sidhu, Governor of Goa as the Legislative
Assembly is not in session.

Hi Fredrick,

Reading your message brought about a wave of nostalgia -- Ive been born and
brought up in Bombay, but as a child, I used to spend every summer vacation
in Goa.Our house is just opposite St Joseph's Chapel,Davorlim
where Fr Peter was a resident priest for many years.I along with a few
village kids used to hang around the Chapel, and Fr Peter would always call
us in,and get us to spend our time constructively. He taught us to make
rosaries and we used to sit around a table and painstakingly attach rosary
beads to chains. We also used to make decorations for the chapel feast
which is in May.
Brother Peter used to grow different herbs and he also reared quite a lot of
livestock ,I remember the guinea fowls used to keep chasing us.

I met him a few years ago ,when I took a relative to him ,for some treatment
for a kidney problem. He vaguely remembered me.He has quite a no, of people
coming to him for various treatments.Brother Peter has been living in
Mandop,Navelim for the past couple of years.

The Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar who has always been first to pinpoint
wrong doings of Kamat government has not found anything wrong with the
government decision that set to overrule Supreme court order.
His only statement so far has been that government has the right to bring
ordinance.
It?s ironical that aggressive BJP and the leader of opposition does not want to
see real purpose of the ordinance even though like minded people and public in
general, have realized as to whose benefit ordinance has been introduced.

Can anyone tell the reason of the silence of Manoharbab ?

m.k.

Dear Mr. Madev,

Did you not hear that politics is the last resource for scoundrels or birds of
the same feathers flock together and support each other or united we stand in
corruption and divided we fall from grace ? Though birds have this tendency to
snatch each others feed, but that doesn't matter it's all one big happy family.
Hope that answers your question.

[Goanet] Backstabber Parriker seeks MGP Support

Backstabber Parriker seeks MGP Support

Goa's backstabing leader of opposition -- the man who is well known for
changing his statements much faster then the Goan chemeleon -- the man who
excels in the art of unsuccessful coups through the back-door for bringing down
democratically elected Goan governments -- the man who turned a blind eye to
the communial zealots in his party that went on a rampage against the minority
community whilst he was the Chief Minister -- The man who termed Seby a
Naxalite -- The man who today acuses casinos/mining to be illegal, while it
still was on in full swing while he was in power...today wants the MGP to
support his nefaro=ious agenda at the lok Sabha elections...the same MGP he
cold blodedly backstabbed some years ago to mark the saffron march of the
communial zealots into Goa...

Today, Porriker is portraying a picture of a man lost at sea and has no agendas
whatsoever and is trying to woo the minorities by playing issues like kabrastan
issues.

It is sad while the BJP in Karnataka is opposing charlie champlin's statue
because he was catholic, the BJP in Goa is trying to reach out to the
catholics, specially in south Goa to seek votes, that through a blood stained
person like Narendra Modi...

Wah! It looks like the electorate of Goa is so dumb and illeterate that they
not see the link between all that is happening.

Good luck guys...you sure dont know what you are doing/// but i bet the voters
know what to do with you... soon...

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 4th Sunday of Lent

2009-03-16 Thread Jude Botelho
15-Mar-2009

Dear Friend,

As we go through life we are conditioned by situations and circumstances to
react to stimuli that constantly come our way. If we were to question people
about why they acted in a particular way they would say something to this
effect: “I acted in this manner because so and so said this to me or did that!”
or “I did this because I had no other option but to react as I did!” In other
words’ we are mostly reactors in life, controlled by others. We seldom choose
our response to situations, events and people. Faith challenges us to respond
from within. It invites us to be responsible, to be capable to respond in faith
and love, to respond through God! Have a silent weekend responding to the God
within! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: 4th Sunday of Lent ‘Speaking in His name, Building His
temple!’ 22-Mar-2009
2 Chronicles 36: 14-16, 19-33;  Ephesians 2: 4-10;   John 3: 14-21;

In today’s first reading the writer of the Chronicles offers his explanation of
the Exile as a divine punishment, a punishment of the priests and the people
for not listening to the prophets and their teaching. Because they did not
listen and obey God’s word, their temple was destroyed and Jerusalem itself lay
in ruins. The exile that lasted seventy years was like a Sabbath for the land
of Judah, during which it lay desolate. But in spite of their lack of hearing
and abandoning God’s word, Yahweh does not give up on his people. He is the
faithful one and He uses a pagan leader, Cyrus the King of Persia to rebuild
the destroyed temple and bring the straying people back to their God. In our
times too we often stray away but God uses sometimes unexpected strangers to
bring us back to Himself.

God Sends Us a Saviour
John Voigt and Jane Fonda play the lead roles in the movie Coming Home, which
is about an American soldier crippled for life because of the Vietnam War. The
film focuses on the psychological as well as the physical ordeals of this
paraplegic – how he struggles with the help of a woman to accept his handicap,
reconstruct his dreams, and create a future for himself. This Vietnam War vet’s
situation is very similar to that of the Jews in death and deportation.
However, just when it seemed as if it were all over for them, God inspired
Cyrus the pagan king of Persia not only to release them from exile, but also to
help them rebuild their Temple. God often sends people to help us through a
crisis: parents and children frequently intervene to assist each other; a true
friend often comes through when no one else will; sometimes it is the pastor, a
teacher or a parishioner who bails us out. Regardless of who it is that God
sends to help us in times of
trouble, there is one person he always sends to be at our side – his own Son
Jesus.
Albert Cylwicki in ‘His Word Resounds’

In his letter to the Ephesians, grace abundant and beyond price is the
preoccupation of Paul. From the start Paul speaks with enthusiasm of God’s gift
to man through Jesus Christ, and he elaborates on the gifts we have received
through Jesus Christ. “The Father has blessed us with every spiritual blessing.
He has destined us to be his sons, to unite all things in Him on heaven and
earth. Today’s section affirms that grace and blessings are given to us even
though we are unworthy. We can never earn God’s grace freely bestowed upon us.
Unworthy though we are, we are still God’s work of art, created in Jesus Christ.

God So Loved the World….
A visitor was once being shown around an art gallery. The gallery contained
some beautiful paintings, which were universally acknowledged to be
masterpieces. At the end of the tour the visitor said, ‘I don’t think much of
these old pictures.” To which his guide replied, ‘my good man, these pictures
are no longer on trial. But those who look at them are.’ The man’s reaction was
not a judgment on the pictures but on his own pitiful appreciation of art. In
the same way those who prefer darkness to light have condemned themselves. Evil
people hate the light because it reveals themselves to themselves. They hate
goodness because it reveals their badness; they hate industry because it
reveals their laziness. They will destroy the light, the goodness, the love, in
order to avoid the pain of self-discovery. It’s terrible to reject the light,
to reject God’s offer of love, but how sweet to walk in the light of his love.
Our part in the process of
redemption is to accept the gift in all humility, and try to respond in kind.
We are able to love God because God loved us first.
Flor McCarthy in ‘New Sunday and Holyday Liturgies’

Today’s gospel narrates Jesus’ encounter with Nicodemus, one of the disciples
who came to see him secretly whom Jesus questioned and explained his message at
length. The first part of the discourse enunciates the necessity for rebirth as
an essential prerequisite for entry into the kingdom of God. “Unless a m
