[Goanet] Kuwait: CRYcket Festival - Gladiators & Invincibles clinch Trophies

GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)

CRYcket Festival - Gladiators & Invincibles clinch Trophies

The Friends of CRY Club (FOCC) hosted the CRYcket 2008 on 27th March 09, for
children in the Under 12 & Under 14 categories at the Ahmadi grounds, with the
kind
support of Kuwait Oil Company and the Hockey Committee. The event was a roaring
success on all acounts and attended by a large crowd who watched 25 keenly
contested
games. The first two attempts to hold the tournament in November 08 and Jan 09
were
washed out by heavy rains. But this did not dampen the spirit & participation
of any
of the contestants. Kids corner, essay and painting competitions, Buy for CRY
stall,
raffle & bingo and other games for children conducted by youngsters themselves
kept
the spirits of the spectators high. The tournament was sponsored by Payal
Jewellers, New English Optics, DNV Classification, Oriental Restaurants and
Fantasy
World provided gifts for the various competitions, as in the past several years.

In the Under 12 category Gladiators Juniors , Riggae Cricket Club and Spartan
Juniors teams qualified to the Super league. The first Super League match
between
Gladiators Juniors & Spartans Juniors started with Spartans winning the toss
and
electing to field. Superb Batting by Rohan Shaju (21 not out), Shagun Chauhan
(11
runs) & Siddarth Dash (11 runs) gave Gladiators a comfortable 70 runs in 7
overs. In
reply Spartans were all out for 40 runs in 6.4 overs, Sandeep Dutta being the
top
scorer with 17 runs. All the Gladiators bowlers were equally successful. Rishab
of
Gladiators emerged as the only bowler bagging a hat trick. In the second Super
league match between Riggae CC and Spartans, Spartans won the toss and elected
to
Bat. Though they lost wickets initially, their middle order batsmen Saif Nadeem
(19
not out) & Khalid Abdul (11 runs) took them to a total of 53 runs in 7 overs .
Allen
Tom was the pick of the bowlers for Riggae conceding just 5 runs in 2 overs
clinching 3 wickets. Riggae in reply took the required 54 runs in just 5.5
overs.
Hani Hamza top scored for them with 15 runs. In the third Super league match
between
Riggae CC & Gladiators, Riggae won the toss and elected to bat. Their scorecard
read
47 runs from 7 overs. Hani Hamza again top scored with 21 not out. Rishab
spearheaded the Gladiator bowling attack conceding just 6 runs in 1 over
clinching 2
wickets. Gladiators reached the target in 6.1 overs with Shagun Chauhan giving
a
solid start retiring at 20 assisted by Aswin Gupta (10 runs). Gladiators
clinched
the CRYcket Trophy for Under 12 Category winning both super league matches.
Riggae
CC secured the second place. Rohan Shaju of Gladiators Juniors was adjudged
Best
Under 12 Player

In the Under 14 category Abuhalifa Knight Riders , Invincibles, Flawless and
Gladiatiors Seniors teams to semifinals. In the first semifinals between
Abuhalifa
Knight Riders & Gladiators Seniors, the toss was won by Gladiators who elected
to
bat first. Tight bowling by Abuhalifa KR restricted Gladiators to a total of 32
runs
in 7 overs. Gladiators fought back with a determined bowling attack making it a
finger biting match. Sensible batting from the Abuhalifa Batsmen, Bhargav
Cheprolou
(13 runs) and Vinaya Khandelwal (10 not out) assured them victory with four
balls to
spare.
In the second semifinals between Invincibles and Flawless, the toss was won by
Flawless who elected to bat first. Flawless was restricted to a total of 37
runs
from 7 overs by a very disciplined bowling and fielding performance. David
Mathew
took 1 wicket from 2 overs conceding just 5 runs. Sanjeet Singh (18 retired)
gave a
head start to Invincibles. Rohan Paul (10 not out) and David Mathew (10 runs)
ensured the victory with two overs to spare. Faizan Ali was the best performer
for
Flawless scoring 14 runs. He conceded a mere 9 runs in 2 overs claiming 1
wicket.

In the much awaited finals between Abuhalifa Knight Riders and Invincibles,
Invincibles won the toss and elected to field first. Soumendra Kumar gave a
solid
start to Abuhalifa retiring at 20 which took them to a comfortable 34 in 4
overs
with 8 wickets in hand. Comprehending the impending danger, the invincible
bowlers
rose to the occasion. They conceded just 7 runs in the last three overs
claiming 6
wickets that changed the entire scenario. Sanjeet Singh spearheaded the bowling
attack giving away just 6 runs in two overs. He was well supported by Rohan
Paul
and David Mathew. Abuhalifa did well to get back into the match. By
restricting
Invincibles to a mere 20 runs, they left the match evenly poised at the end of
four
overs. Soumendra Kumar topped the bowling for Abuhalifa giving away just 6 runs
in
two overs. With nine wickets in hand the Invincibles seemed to be in a
slightly
better position. Sensible batting for second wicket (32runs) between Bharath
Ganesh

Dear Freddy,

That was a nice poem in Konkanni - I think we should have some of us who are
blessed
with a poetic talent ( I dont know if I am ) to contribute sometimes at least
we can
revive our dear Konkanni in our own small little way by penning a few lines and
this
will also help to deflect our minds from some of the pressing and depressing

Re: [Goanet] Christians attack church property in Mangalore

2009-03-31 Thread Edward Verdes
Mario, I m a regular reader of Daijworld and I did read this article March
18th,
the guys who did this act must be punished after proper investigation.
Besdies it is a shame to their
family who are from the same parishThe investigation is not very clear
as there
is no mention who was behind this youth, either they have been trapped or
lured by some politicians.
The police was quite fast to arrest these culprits, though they are still
not able to arrest the ones who did damages to the
Churches in Manglore last year. Besides the Karnataka police is on record
for brutally beating women, nuns
and children, and have have engaged in revengeful acts against the Catholic
youth, after their failure was reported..
so what justice you can expect from the police? I am sure the police was
kept aware of this situation beforehand.

I also feel this is just one case, and there will many more cases in future
blaming the Christians.

now that the Sangh parivar wants to show their clean image.

As for the nuns, this is not a new thing, similar incidents have been
reported in the past.
and this is only Syrian Malabar Catholic Church in Kerala. It is also
strange that the Cardinal and the nuns
kept quiet all this while. We are yet to hear from Roman Catholic nuns from
Goa, Jabalpur, Mumbai and other states.

Re: [Goanet] Nuns treated like servants by priests

From: "Sandeep Heble"

Fr Ivo wrote:

Can you mention just one? Are there "many" priests who are, according to
you, "treating the nuns like servants" using the Bible?

You are already attributing an error to the Bible, namely that the Bible
"demeans women". Do you want me to teach you the biblical statements on
empowerment of women in the Jewish society? What was Jesus' attitude
towards women?

--

My response:

A quick Google search directed me to several links. Here are just a
couple of them which could answer your queries though I cannot vouch
for their authenticity.

http://www.atheistfoundation.org.au/womenbible.htm

http://www.nobeliefs.com/DarkBible/darkbible7.htm

Books like the Bible (and those of most other religions) were figments
of human imagination written in times when male society was highly
dominant treating women like inferior citizens. Concepts like equality
were obviously alien in those dark ages. Some of them were even
political doctrines intended to subjugate and conquer other races.

When science has grown by leaps and bounds, why then does religion
stagnate and refuse to grow and evolve? We need to stop taking our
holy books to be the infallible words of God. There is a need for a
scholarly research of all the religions of the world. The scriptures
need to be purged of all instances of hate speeches, irrational
thoughts and discriminatory verses. A modern liberal society needs to
undertake this kind of an exercise. This is the least it owes to
posterity.

***As you already admit, you "cannot vouch for their authenticity", when you
are
directing us to several links provided by Google search and expecting
answers from them.

A random Google search cannot answer our quest for God.
Let us be critical. I am answering you from the Jewish-Christian
perspective,

since we are discussing
about the teaching of the Bible on women.

1.Bible is the Word of God. God has made in history a covenant with the
people of Israel
and with the whole humankind. Bible is infallible as far as the saving truth
is concerned.

It is guiding the world even today. I have no doubt about it.
2.Scholarly research on biblical exegesis, history, archaeology,
hermeneutics is going on in the Universities throughout the world.
3.Scriptures have to be interpreted, not "purged of all instances of hate
speeches, irrational thoughts and discriminatory verses"
that you may find there with your lenses. (As you admit, you will not be
able to vouch for the accusing statements).
4.It is Christianity, not Science, that has empowered women, wherever
society was enslaving them, including in India.
It was a gradual process. Christianity (for that matter also other
religions, to some extent) has enlightened the

Barbarian hordes and has given us today
a place where we can live in a human, rational way, where Science can evolve
freely, responsibly and ethically.
5.In the links provided by you there are several basic errors about the
Bible and quotations from the Bible.

The quotation attributed to the biblical scholar,
Father Roland de Vaux, does not give the teaching of the Bible, but the
situation of the women in the Jewish society,
which was also in the rest of the world. In India there were (and
unfortunately there are) worse crimes against women and children...
6."Male chauvinism" has always been there. It is there also today. But there
is a transformation through Gospel values throughout the world.
It is being translated in international laws and declarations of human
rights. Jesus has been a Revolutionary in the empowerment of women and
ostracised people. The Church continues the work of her Master. I do not
know what you have to say about it. I shall need more space to comment on
the links that you have provided.
India has a lot to do in this field. Religions should help us to do that
work.
Science cannot provide ethical values to the world. Reason is already
enlghtened by Faith, that is what should continue...

This is what we are leaving to posterity.
Regards.
Fr.Ivo

[Goanet] God and science

2009-03-31 Thread Mario Goveia

This one is especially for Fr. Ivo:-))

God is sitting in Heaven, minding his own business, when a well known
Goan-American scientist says to Him, "Lord, we don't need you anymore. Science
has finally figured out a way to create life out of nothing. In other words,
we can now do what you did in the 'beginning'."

"Oh, is that so? Tell me..." replies God.

"Well" says the scientist, "we can take dirt and form it into the
likeness of You and breathe life into it, thus creating man. "

"Well, that's interesting. Can you please show me?"

So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mold the soil.

"Oh no, no, no, no..." interrupts God, "Please use your own dirt."

[Goanet] Who will pay the printer Was: Re: An Ode to Joseph Furtado (by Augusto Pinto)

2009-03-31 Thread Venantius Pinto
I am sure no Goan wants charity, certainly not those who pride themselves of
standing on their own feet; as I am aware entrepreneurs who would for good
reasons not see a consonance with philanthropy and its acts. Having said
that, I doubt whether one has seen, even shades of either philanthropy or an
excess of charity in Goa. Perhaps caritas, as in benevolence and in love,
Philanthropy in the sense of altruism? Most likely not or exceedingly rare
or unknown.

No one is offering charity. I see in some of these scenarios (an in a book
of Joseph Furtado's works) the potential whereby we honor as well as create
Goan icons. The larger players have had their chance and they will re-enter
the field / market when they feel that the time is right. Other smaller
publishers, including regional ones will see opportunities as time and space
changes and opportunities reveal themselves. In such ventures, some books
will have a tiny readership. On the other hand some will consider publishing
books on esoteric subjects. To each their material. For instance an artist's
book will have a small edition / small run and the publishing techniques may
have to be different.

I for one do not come from wealth but know the moves that I can and am
willing to make, including publishing if need be, or handing it over to some
one else. Distribution is a whole other exercise. I personally am not
looking for opportunity, my works sustains me. So publishers should continue
to bring works out and also attempt to be force in develop the book reading
culture. The building of book culture in Goa is a journey that has begun but
it does not promise to set a blistering pace anytime soon. One way to
achieve that is to have writers read from their books and certainly at art
events. Places of worship, clubs, etc, could be instrumental in creating
such forums--perhaps even after say a high mass. And all are welcome. Some
of the money from the till could go towards tea and snacks. The body and
mind needs some sustenance, and not just the spirit in the religious sense.
As with many things I say--easier said than done. My apologies in that
regard.

Philanthropy has a place. It is an altruism when practiced correctly. People
like me practice it although we are not of wealth. It can also be considered
as a meditative practice. It is also regarded poorly, and rightly so, when
the base intent is not towards creating something good. Often those who
complain against it are those who may stand to loose a foothold in their
path towards stability and business security. A force that is often
misunderstood.

One last thing: I see writer/journalists reviewing books when only a handful
have the acumen or panache to be doing so. They simply do not have the
skills. So what does one do. I do not have that answer yet, other than
saying that one may only continue striving towards honing ones critiquing
chops. No point in over reaching--going beyond ones skill sets when one is
not ready for it. Some have indeed evolved over time (no names) but the
knowledge seems not to have been percolated laterally.

How come, while taking photo/video, one is not spotted by any
one particularly by Goa based netters like FN, CP,. MB, RP, FL etc etc?

Well, let me confess today..

There is one main JoeGoaUk and there are several sub-JoeGoaUks
spread in not all parts of Goa. They work for the Main JoeGoaUk and
they do not work for free. They get free Cameras and other business
tools. They have one free Computer with internet accessible 24hrs
a day. The Main moderates or approves all the work. Not all of them
are computer savvy.

It’s true the main one visit Goa up to 6 times a year (Av. being 4.5).

It’s not a joke to capture some Pics at Vasco Baina beach at 5pm and
then same time/day capture pics and video at Santa Pursao, Goa –Velha
say 7/8pm and then upload pics and video on the nets on the very
same night.

So now you know JoeGoaUk ki asliyat.

Some vacancies exist:

Canacona, Ponda, Sanguem & Pednem

You get Rs.1000 fixed per month, & 200 Petrol allowance even if you
can’t drive.

Plus FREE goodies, meals, drinks etc with the Main whilst in Goa
worth Rs.5000 per person per 2.5 months (no cash alternative please).

Business secrecy or confidentiality is utmost important.

No betrayals please

6 months renewable contract.

- This is not a full time job, average one or two hrs per day fine
- You don’t have to be a photographer, sharp nose and ears are must
- This is essentially an outdoor job
- You may or may not meet the asli or the Main JoeGoaUk but you can still
get your share of goodies etc

[Goanet] Goa - A Bankrupt Paradise

2009-03-31 Thread soter
Will the results of the 2009 Lok Sabha Elections be any different in Goa? At
present it looks as if the same rascals will be back in the saddle. As long as
it remains a fight between Congress/NCP and BJP with UGDP playing monkey in the
middle, goa's future will continue to be grim. It is not the case that there
are little options for the voter to choose from, but the real question is
whether the goan voter ever desires to drive home a point to both those
national parties that have been playing the fool since the early 80's.
A crisis in morality, a lack of risk taking for change and absence of political
maturity is at the crux of goa's problem. The noises of the people about Ali
baba and his 40 chors and casinos,.and cidade..is not to be taken
seriously. A lot of it is merely for public consumption. The war cries at Azad
maidan would most likely materialise into dinner party's at Clube Vasco,
mariotts or Cidade. What may be presented to you in the living room may be
entirely different from what has been actually cooked in the kitchen.
In the present circumstances more honest contestants in the fray will only
result in increasing the mess no matter how upright the candidate. As long as
people do not do their arithmetic properly opportunistic politicians will keep
keep floating ideas about the need for popular activists to jump into the
election fray ultimately obtaining just the desired result. These political
ideas floated around villages are not indegineous but are hybrid varieties
marketed by none other than the regular wholesalers and traders in goa's
politics. Their products appear so attractive like the BT cotton but ultimately
only leads to no where like the greedy and foolish cotton farmers who land in
debt and ultimately suicide.
Who will ever care to listen. The ways of the world have not changed from the
times when they stoned the prophets and refused to turn from their destructive
ways. For goans the pastries coming from the concrete kings and mineral farmers
of margao will continue to be more attractive and tasty than those coming from
SHGs. The goan society is like that of the Israelites who were in search of a
deliverer but landed up being trapped by the scribes and pharisees into not
accepting the Truth.

I too agree completely with you Selma on this one.
It is actually a Mockery of the feelings of people, and as always in
desperation people run anywhere and everywhere
and this is the bait that the people need.

In Africa where I live, people are dying of hunger but these pastors,
believe me here they are in hundreds are flourishing.
Every Sunday all TV channels are only showing this healing and God knows
what.

And everybody instead of working hard for productivity end up hours and
hours in Church.
All in the name of God which must be a very personal affair. it can even be
felt when you are all by yourself.

Have they changed, absolutely not infact instead of leading a quality life,
They lead exactly the opposite, They would not
even wink an eyelid to tell you a LIE.

I'm actually shocked that this sort of nonsense has been exported to
Australia as well. If I claimed to be a "healer and a prophet" I'd be locked
up in a rehab centre but a priest can claim what he likes in the name of
God. Hundreds of people are led astray every year by charlatans such as
these who claim to cure cancer, diabetes, drug addiction, mental disease,
etc. It is a terrible, terrible crime to lead people astray like this. And
before someone says it is not wrong to give people hope, please ask yourself
how amenable you would be to a doctor who claims to cure you with sugar
pills.

Absolute balderdash!

Don't go for this healing mass or any other healing mass.

The American said it was a great country with amazing ancient history, and rich
with natural resources.

The Indian friend then asked, "How did you find the Indians?"

"Indians?" asked the American. "What Indians? I didn't find or meet a single
Indian."

"What nonsense are you talking?" asked the Indian. "Who else can you meet in
India?"

The American said:

"In Kashmir I met a Kashmiri; in Punjab a Punjabi; ...in Bihar, Maharashtra
Rajasthan, Bengal, Tamilnadu, KeralaI met Biharis, Marathis, Marwadis,
Bengalis, Tamilians, Malayalis

Then I met a Muslim, a Hindu, a Christian, a Jain, a Buddhist, and many more.

First, you have to provide evidence that the Church schools, Madarsas and Ekal
Vidyalayas indeed preach hate against other religions. Simple rhetoric,
exaggerations and generalizations are not enough. That is exactly what the
Hindu extremists are doing against Christian conversions and Islamic teachings.

After reading historical accounts of Birsa Munda's life from other sources, I
have concluded that Times of India is making a mountain out of a mole hill.
There is nothing grossly discrepant in the excerpt from Popli's version, that
it has provided.

[Goanet] Santmodi - Calvary hill of Goa

2009-03-31 Thread Antonio Menezes
Santmodi is a hamlet of Chinchinim village with about 24 houses but it is
the hillock behindit
( about 100 to 150 metres high ) that comes to life every year on the
fifth sunday of Lent.
It would appear as if a Crucifixion scene is being enacted here. Round
about 3 pm in the
afternoon one sees long lines of devotees approaching the hillock. They
come silently from all
directions using all the available village paths and gather at the foot of
the hillock. They move
upward inch by inch towards the top of the hillock ( where there is a small
chapel dedicated
to the Holy Cross, pausing fourteen times on the way up ( and each time
saying OF,HM &
GB in unison ) signifying fourteen stations of the cross. They gather
around the small chapel
where mass is said reminding them of the Calvary scene. And once it is all
over one sees
mass of devotees slowly descending down the hillock equally silently and
then spread in all
directions towards their homes.
The movement of the people up and down the hillock under the blazing sun (
there are no
umbrellas or caps and some are bare footed ) has to be witnessed personally
to gauge
the fervour of catholic masses

[Goanet] Here comes Fomento on Mission Sonsoddo!

2009-03-31 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com

GULF-GOANS e-NEWSLETTER (since 1994)

Here comes Fomento on Mission Sonsoddo!

While the inferno of controversies continues to rage over Sonsoddo, Fomento
Group now awakening to its Corporate Social Responsibility has offered to
manage the garbage site, reports JULIO D’SILVA.

Although the stink due to the garbage at Sonsoddo has died down since Goa
Foundation started managing it since November last year and though the fire
that engulfed it has been capped, controversies dogging this site refuse to die
down with the Fomento Group now awakening to its Corporate Social
Responsibility and offering to manage the site.
It may be recalled that Goa Foundation had offered to manage the site and set
in place the necessary equipment to handle the nearly 40 tonnes of garbage
dumped at the site everyday. They also offered to treat and dispose the
accumulated garbage.
After much deliberations and delays primarily initiated due to Urban
Development Minister Joaquim Alemao’s aversion to Goa Foundation, the
authorities approved their proposal, as the five-member committee appointed by
the government to whet their proposal, backed it.
Having started the work at Sonsoddo on 27th November 2008, Goa Foundation has
baled nearly 60 tonnes of plastic waste and prepared 60 tonnes of compost from
the meat and vegetable garbage that was brought everyday to the site.
“The baled plastic and compost is totally worth around Rs 2 lakh and the
municipality is in the process of issuing tenders to sell it,” disclosed Claude
Alvares of Goa Foundation.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho however pointed out that there were
no takers for the plastic at the moment as due to the recession, there are no
takers for plastic to be recycled. He also admitted that a company from
Maharashtra had evinced interest in lifting the compost.
However, it has not been smooth sailing for Goa Foundation, as it had to
struggle at every moment. “The council took one month to provide me with a 100
metre long pipe of one-inch diameter that was required to tackle the fire at
the site,” disclosed Dr Alvares while pointing out that though they are only
supposed to handle the garbage that is brought in daily, they are offering to
treat the nearly 120 tonnes of accumulated garbage at the site that had caught
fire.
While pointing out that their work has been stalled because the MMC is yet to
provide them with a three-phase connection, Dr Alvares said it was because of
these delays that he moved the court that has now directed that a fire tender
be provided to them to tackle the fire that is raging underneath and has merely
been capped by dumping mud on top.
Experts opined that fire at the site was inevitable since any decomposing
process releases methane gas, which is highly inflammable and those working at
the site revealed that practically everyday there is fire sprouting from some
place or the other which has to be doused.
“There is fire raging underneath, which cannot be seen because of the mud
dumped on top. But if you dig, you are bound to find the fire which probably
only the monsoons may be able to put off,” opined Subhash Kamat the supervisor
at Sonsoddo.
But even as the situation at Sonsoddo was as mentioned above, the situation has
now taken an interesting turn with Fomento Group offering to manage the site.
“We have to consider their proposal even though they have not given any
details, because there is no financial liability involved and I do not want any
allegations against me tomorrow,” said Coutinho.
He informed that Fomento has offered to manage the Sonsddo site on Design,
Build, Operate and Transfer basis, but not given any time-schedule for this
entire exercise. Besides, Coutinho disclosed that a few clarifications are
required from Goa Foundation.
“Initially Goa Foundation had proposed to set up two machines that would sieve
the garbage at the rate of 75 tonnes per hour but are now proposing to purchase
two machines of 45 tonnes capacity,” pointed out Coutinho.
Besides, he revealed that Goa Foundation had quoted an amount of Rs 51 lakh for
the first phase that involved tackling the daily garbage. “We have done it
departmentally for the moment by using our staff and it has cost us only around
Rs 10 lakh,” said Coutinho justifying why he has to take the Fomento’s proposal
seriously.

(courtesy: www.ancestralgoa.com)

Dr Alvares clarified that the capacity of the machines was a genuine
typographical error on the covering letter though on all other documents the
capacity was clearly mentioned as 45 tonnes.
As for the expenditure, he pointed out that the work has not yet commenced on
the scale it was meant to be because of the procedural and other delays. “I am
not into this for business but as an environmentalist, I genuinely feel that
Sonsoddo can be an example for others to show how garbage can be managed
scientifically,” he asserted.
“I would be more than happy if somebody takes over

[Goanet] Christians attack church property in Mangalore

2009-03-31 Thread Mario Goveia

Date: Mon, 30 Mar 2009 22:44:33 +0530
From: Marshall Mendonza

I think it was a sad and despicable act on the part of the foursome with the
criminal intention to deflect the blame on hindutva forces. I do not know if
they even understood the implications of their action.

Mario responds:

C'mon, Marshall, let's see a little more display of akkal, please. I know I
was born at night, but it wasn't last night.

In your first sentence you tell us what their intent was and in the very next
sentence you suggest they may not have understood what they were doing. Their
problem is they got caught red handed.

Besides, if you had clicked on the link and glanced at the report you would
know that there were more than four perpetrators and they have admitted
precisely what their motive was.

I wrongly thought this report would shock you into realizing what kinds of
people are drawing attention away from the REAL atrocities of Hindutva
extremists by conjuring up false accusations. First it was Marxist agitator,
Vijay Prashad, now a bunch of Christian goons in Mangalore.

Marshall wrote:

In future, whenever there is any attack or vandalisation of churches, the
hindutva brigade is bound to say 'remember last time some christians themselves
vandalised church property and tried to pin the blame on us'. They have done a
great disservice to the christian community.

Mario responds:

Of course they have done a disservice, and of course that is what some Hindutva
activists will say. This is precisely why people of good will must have
reasonably good evidence before accusing anyone of a misdeed - so they cannot
escape blame, if indeed they are to blame.

BTW, has it escaped your attention that the Hindutva extremists do great harm
to the larger Hindu community?

Marshall wrote:

Regarding the matter of the nuns, I had made myself very clear, that I
prefer to post / comment on social issues which affect the peace and well
being of the wider community.

Mario responds:

What wider community have you been interested in? What you are actually doing
is harping on issues that affect the peace of a narrow community, i.e.
Christians, while trying desperately to ignore those who have disturbed the
peace within the Christian community.

Marshall wrote:

I do not generally comment on religion or intra-religious matters as I believe
that they are better sorted out from within the communities where there is
greater acceptance. But since you have been persisting for a response, I will
make an exception.

Mario responds:

This is a very convenient position you have taken, but I am persisting as your
senior because I would like you to realize that you cannot be considered a
mature and credible observer when you focus on the transgressions of one group
and ignore the transgressions of the very group you belong to, until someone
like me has to drag it out of you.

Were you absent when the concept of "Charity begins at home" was being
discussed in school?

And, once again, you seem to be violating your own standard of leaving
intra-religious issues to people within the community - which I am still
presuming includes you when the religion in question is Christianity - even
though you have not confirmed whether you are a Christian or not.

Marshall wrote:

Nun's case: Here is my take on the subject.
1. There is no compulsion on anyone to join the convent. It is purely
voluntary.

2. If on joining, one finds that life is not what it is made out to be, one
can freely opt out. No one can bind you or tie you in there.

3. The nun spent 33 years in the convent. Why did she continue to be in the
convent all these years? Why did she keep silent all these years? Why did
she not bring this to the attention of her superiors or bishop or any higher
ecclestical authority? Why did she not report to the police in case she felt
intimidated within the convent? Why did she not think of changing her order?

We need answers to get a clearer picture.

Mario responds:

This is the most callous and cynical commentary I have heard in a long time
where a group of victims, identified not by some rumor or innuendo, but by an
official investigation by the Catholic Church and the testimony of a senior
Cardinal, is having their motives questioned, with the implication that they
were somehow complicit in their own abuse.

I wonder if you applied the same cynical illogic to the victims of the
pedophile priests. Did you question whether they, too, "tolerated" their abuse?

I wonder if we have a psychiatrist or psychologist among our members, or at
least a physician to explain to Marshall how shame and low self esteem trap
victims within abusive relationships in such cases where a powerful person in
their cultural heirarchy, like a parent or a priest, is the abuser.

Can we take a break from the far left wing blogs and help young Marshall get
properly oriented?

The publisher will pay the printer. If you (the reader) will buy the
book/s. What is needed is not charity or philanthrophy, but attempts
to build up a viable book culture in Goa.

Three to four years ago, the National Book Trust (New Delhi, a GoI
institution) held a grossly-subsidised book publishing fortnight long
training programme in Goa. From the 15 or so participants, at least
four or five have ventured into some form of publishing. Cecil Pinto
came out with Domnic's Goa (and I have been constantly goading him to
continue in the field, our online fights notwithstanding). Jose
Pereira has come out with a neat book on the 'Parish Churches of Goa'
(and though he has since shifted to the Gulf, he's very prolific,
maybe more than he was in Goa).

Another engineer-turned-writer/photographer (Engico-educated Jose
Lourenco being the other one) Pantelao Fernandes has come out with his
100 Goan Experiences [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7loZho8Gis]
Rajeshree Bandodkar has been into publishing earlier (a book on
science for students, in Konkani) and continues now.

For an update of Goa,1556 please see
[http://goa1556.goa-india.org/index.php?page=our-work-our-plans]
Incidentally, because i subscribe to the viewpoint of copylefting, the
entire texts of the first four books are at
[http://goa1556books.notlong.com] I am confident that some who
appreciate a book there would possibly go on to buy a copy once
they're in Goa.

Victor Rangel-Ribeiro, at 83, is always spending time to mentor us,
nudge on the GoaWriters Group, and at last count I saw him whet the
manuscript of Pantelao's impressive, photograph-filled book on Goa.
More details on that soon, when it makes it to the market. I would
like to believe (though others would certainly disagree) that some of
these initiatives have become easier due to networking in cyberspace
in general, and building friendships via Goanet in particular.

VM, another long-time (if silent for long, now) Goanetter has been
working on his own publishing ventures, and his book on Goan music
brought out during the 'Semana' and also the Aparant book on art in
Goa are surely collector's items.

I think books in Goa don't need charity at this point of time; they
need initiatives that help build the 'market' and make them better
appreciated, as they should be. We have a small market here (1.4
million, scattered among different language groups, some non-readers +
expats + tourists). So that poses special challenges.

But one should not be defeatist. Of course, I'm not being critical of
people like Venantius, who (I personally know) has been a big
supporter of Goa books.

As I see it (and more debate or understanding of the field is
certainly called for), we need a few more things to happen in Goa at
this point of time in this sector:

* Goa books need to be reviewed IN GOA itself. This hardly happens.
* Maybe mentoring of youngsters in the field of reviewing could help.
* More bookshops need to be convinced about setting up spl 'Goa book' corners.
* More reasonably-priced are needed, specially touching the overseas market.
* More serious (if small) publishing houses would encourage more to write.
* A permanent exhibition of Goa-books needs to be set up
* The new Margao/Navelim South Goa district library could be a good
venue for this.
* Konkani-to-English translations (and others too) are vital.
* Cross-language reviewing could help (say, Marathi books reviewed in English).
* Overall, a book culture needs to be promoted.
* Books can be promoted as presents, in Goa and the diaspora.
* Don't buy books as charity, but because they help us understand ourselves.

It's amazing how many books a small place like Goa has produced. Just
today, I received a copy of the 611-page novel 'Love and Samsara' by
Eusebio Rodrigues, Professor Emeritus of English Literature at
Georgetown University.

Of course, a lot more can be done. For that, we need to keep aside our
negativism and work together in a way that the entire field grows. I'm
sure it's a possible target... Let's see. FN

New Delhi: Rejecting the plea of a Muslim student that he should be
permitted to sport beard in his convent school, the Supreme Court observed
secularism cannot be overstretched and that "Talibanisation" of the country
cannot be permitted.

"We don't want to have Talibans in the country. Tomorrow a girl student may
come and say that she wants to wear a burqa, can we allow it?" Justice
Markandeya Katju speaking for a bench headed by Justice Raveendran observed.
While asserting he was a secularist, Justice Katju said religious beliefs
cannot be overstretched.
Joao observes: I thought a beard is something natural ...? Is Justice
Raveendran's experience different? Is a burqa also something natural ...?
Good fun!!

I'm actually shocked that this sort of nonsense has been exported to Australia
as well. If I claimed to be a "healer and a prophet" I'd be locked up in a
rehab centre but a priest can claim what he likes in the name of God. Hundreds
of people are led astray every year by charlatans such as these who claim to
cure cancer, diabetes, drug addiction, mental disease, etc. It is a terrible,
terrible crime to lead people astray like this. And before someone says it is
not wrong to give people hope, please ask yourself how amenable you would be to
a doctor who claims to cure you with sugar pills.

Absolute balderdash!

Derek Antao was published by Writer's Workshop, the P.Lal-run
