[Goanet-News] The aftermath of a warning from the Speaker (Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho)

2009-08-10 Thread Goanet News
Goanet highlights by Selma Carvalho

In what can truly be described as a historic week for Goanet, one
prominent Goanetter, Samir Kelekar, son of the freedom fighter,
Gurunath Kelekar, was threatened by the Speaker of the assembly with
possible imprisonment for overstepping his bounds in an article
carried by the Goan daily Herald. Mr Rane, the speaker, seems unaware
of the fact that the democracy of Goa does not belong to him. It
belongs to generations that came before him, to men like Gurunath
Kelekar who fought for it and it belongs to the generations that will
come after him, who shall drink deeply of the freedom of speech
guaranteed by our constitution. Here are some snapshot posts
pertaining to this debate:

Long before Samir Kelekar, another Goanet Alfred Tavares had stood up
in the assembly, with these profound words: “Speaker Sir, you are
bloody big fool.” Tavares recalls this incident.

[Goanet] Echoes of British India in East Africa

2009-08-10 Thread Antonio Menezes
. It was during the 19th century that Goan ABC class proved their
capabilities to the
Britishers in India. A small note should be added here:these Goans were
primary level educated ( which was a great achievement during those days
),
of the so called upper caste and hailed mostly from Bardez taluka.

When British East Africa was being opened during the early 20 th century to

disburse the benefits of the British Empire to the natives, a few British
officers
like the District Commissioner, Police and Engineering cadres were sent to
the interior of Kenya. They set up their tents in salubrious high elevation
places
which later became small towns and a few like Nairobi blossomed into a
great city. These pioneering officers were always accompanied by Goan
clerks/
cashiers recruited in India who not only kept paper records but also
safeguarded cash. It is possible that Obama's paternal ancestors may have
paid their taxes in local currency i.e. cowrie shells to a Goan cashier.
There
were some added duties as well. He had to secure provisions for his boss'
home and look after his welfare i.e. that he was comfortably settled in his
residence. When the native mpishi ( cook ) failed to report for duty
either
because of his waywar ways or he could have possibly been eaten by a
crocodile on his way to his Bwana Kuba's house, it was the Goan clerk
who stepped in, cooked and served meals for his boss.

[Goanet] Neo-Colonialism

2009-08-10 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
Freedom is not free. While it is a gift from God, we need to guard and
cherish it. Otherwise it will soon be taken away from us. And, this is
exactly what has happened in the Goa Assembly a few days ago with the
amendment to the Goa Panchayat Act. We can only hope and pray the governor
of Goa will not sign it. But the chances are small. That the amendment has
been carried out by a Congress government is simply unbelievable and we can
only assume these MLAs are not Congressmen at heart but simply conmen. In
Kerala where they have a Congress government they have chosen to uphold the
spirit of the Constitutional Amendment. Not so in Goa where the so-called
Congress Party is committed to destroying the Panchayat institutions and
taking away the power of the people. A case has to be made to the Congress
President Sonia Gandhi who I'm sure is not at all amused. Not since the
Portuguese invasion have we seen something evil to this extent! Unless this
problem is addressed immediately and by all the people of Goa our freedom
and our democracy hangs in balance. It is for the people of Goa to decide if
it is worth the fight.

[Goanet] Big Stones – Monday-muse (10 Aug ’09)

2009-08-10 Thread Pravin Sabnis

MONDAY MUSE (10 August 2009)
BIG STONES

In the late 90s, while conducting training sessions on time management, I used
to carry along a plastic jar. I would put stones, one by one, into the jar.
Once the jar was filled to the top, I would ask the participants, “Is the jar
full? Obviously, not yet! Then, some gravel was put in the jar, to occupy the
space between the big stones. The exercise continued with putting sand into all
the spaces left between the gravel. Lastly, water was poured in until the jar
was filled to the brim.

Then I would repeat the process in reverse, but in vain! Once the jar was full
of water, some sand can go in but only after displacing some water… In the
first scenario, nothing put in earlier was displace!! Gravel cannot go beyond
the top surface of the wet sand… and as for the big stones they just won’t go
in… if you use the force, either the stone will break or the jar will crack up.
The natural truth this illustration teaches us is: “If you don't put the BIG
STONES in first, you'll never get them in at all”.

The BIG STONES are our principal priorities in life … our individuality, our
family, our friends, our physical and mental health, our dreams, our cause …
Remember to put these BIG STONES in first, or you will never get them in at
all. If we sweat the little stuff and fill our life with little things, then we
will never have the real quality time we need to spend on our most important
priorities. And of course, all your principal priorities are equally important!

Let’s hold on to the big stones in the jar of life,
May we BE BETTER at connecting to the right priorities!

Re: [Goanet] G'bye Goa - Goan Emigration-4: HERALD(Goa), Aug 9, 2009

2009-08-10 Thread J. Colaco jc
Dear Gabriel,

Not only Catholic Goans but also non-Goan Goans are being 'forced' by
the Portuguese to leave Goa in recent years. It is all Portugal's
fault. Why else would they have a 'forcible expulsion' office (FEO)
aka consulate in Goa?

The Portuguese are 'forcing' normally 'honeshtt' people to register
their births, marriages, et al with the FEO.

That is why Goans should be happy at the trainloads of unarmed
satyagrahis who are arriving by train into Goa to 'fill the vacuum'.
Some call them 'ghatis', I call them 'chokra boys'.

How else would our 'elite' manage without cheap labour? There are no
Goans left to do the work - Work that normal folks in the west handle
themselves e.g. buy groceries, wash clothes, cook, clean the house,
take out the garbage etc.

Perhaps, they got their nails done just yesterday. Cannot mess with
them, can we?

BTW: did we hear from any of those folks during the recent Free Speech issue?

No? Then Let's talk about the Inquisition with or without Sum_Bhaji
This account in the Rough Guide is frightfully paltry.

[Goanet] Uproar in Salcete over powers to p'yat secys

2009-08-10 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Reference to the article in Herald, Uproar in Salcete over powers to p'yat secys
HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, AUG 9

In my younger days and even today, I am enthralled by puppet shows, the beauty
of it is in the pulling and tugging of strings, without mixing them, and the
wired movements do bring laughs, smiles and joys in our lives. Our politicians
too, seem to have mastered the art well, and want to perform it on the
Secretaries at the Panchayats, where they will be pulling and tugging at the
strings and the secretaries dancing but I am sure we all, who'll be watching,
will not find it funny at all, and infact be fuming at the end of it.

Most of our early nationalist leaders had a vision to give power to the people
by empowering the common people, so that they could decide what's good for them,
that was called power to the people through Panchyati Raj, but now our ever
conniving Goan politicians have devised a plan to take this power from for our
plates and place it on the plates to the secretaries, so that they could feast
themselves while the Secretaries are satisfied with the aroma or those who are
wise enough could take a few nibbles or bites hear and there.

I have in the past mentioned that the most corrupt people apart from our
politicians, in the government machinery are the Panchayat Secretaries and our
elite politicians want to give the keys of the safe to these breed of people,
and the reason for this irrationality is pretty obvious, make merry while the
sun shines and if there's a paternity case leave the Secretary holding the baby
and in case they don't comply then harass them with transfers, they surely do
make good pawns.

People all over Goa are opposing the Bill but our Ministers are hell bent on
getting it passed. Is this democracy ? People are anxiously awaiting for 73rd
and 74th Amendment to be passed and on the contrary we are to get a Bill that
will take away the power of the people, so what's the use of having a Panchayat
body ? It is indeed time to show these jokers that enough is enough, and that
they either work and perform for the people or resign.

Hello Goa anti-mining activists
Did you read this story? Are you thinking what I am thinking?!

Off-shore casinos cause losses: Goa mining industry

   -

*Panaji, Aug 7 (PTI)* Presence of off-shore casinos in the Mandovi river
causes navigational hindrances and delays the iron ore transportation which
causes losses in the business, Goa's mining industry has claimed.

The barges (ships carrying iron ore) are delayed almost by one hour
which is affecting the business, Anil Salgaoncar, owner of M/s Salgaoncar
mining industries Pvt limited, told reporters here.

The space occupied by off-shore casinos is a traditional inland waterway
for the barges to transport ore from state's hinterland to the minor port
where trans-shippers are anchored. The ore is unloaded into the
trans-shippers, which transports it to foreign destinations.

Salgaoncar said that the off-shore casino vessels which are standing
   obstacles causes navigational hindrances.

At the time of navigation, the barges face a lot of problems forcing the
captain to reduce the speed of the vessel and at times, halt it, he said.

Press council recommends commission to study media
Monday, 10 August 2009 01:54

PALAKKAD: The Press Council of India on Sunday said a Commission should be set
up to
study the functioning of the electronic media to ensure they do not cross the
limits while covering news.

Addressing a meet-the-press programme here, the Chairperson of the Council, Mr
Justice G N Ray, said there was a trend, especially among TV channels, to go
after
sensational news. Journalists should know the Lakshman Rekha of their
freedom, he
said.

The people would come out in protest if the media grew too big for their
boots and
freedom would be curbed if the media lost the support of the people, Ray said.

He said it was time the Press Council Act was amended to include stringent
clauses,
enabling it to implement the provisions in the Act. The existing legislation
was 22
years old and should be updated, he said.

Mr Justice Ray, who inaugurated a national seminar on 'The Role of Money Power
in
Elections' organised by the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) here on Saturday
evening,
said media coverage of polls at present did not focus on real issues of the
people,
but was led by sensationalism and glamour.

In the age of globalisation, media was increasingly being governed by market
forces.
The media should address serious issues to eradicate social and political
evils, Mr
Justice Ray said.

Though media institutions had the right to profess their own political beliefs,
it
was also under an obligation to ensure fair and accurate reporting on public
issues
and policies, he said.

transferred before the completion of two years in their posting, the
Goa Government seems to have opted for a modus operandi by which
officers themselves are being asked to apply for transfer.

Information sought under the Right to information act has revealed
that between July 2 and July 10 this year four Police Inspectors
sought transfers citing personal reasons. Strangely in their
applications three of the officers have not cited what the personal
reasons are.

But what has raised eyebrows is the fact that all the four officers
went out of their way to clearly state that there was no compulsion or
pressure on them from anyone to seek transfer. The tearing hurry in
which the applications for transfer were processed and the officers
transferred has left many questions unanswered.

Details given under the RTI Act show that none of the four police
Inspectors had completed the minimum tenure of two years in their
posting as prescribed by the Supreme Court.

IGP Mr. KD Singh summoned the four Police Inspectors to discuss their
applications on July 15 and the Police Establishment Board approved
the transfers the following day with all the officers getting the
postings of their choice. What makes further interesting is the
notings by the IGP as to what was stated to him by the four police
Inspectors.

Police Inspector Dharmesh Angle sought transfer to Vasco stating that
he being from Margao it causes a lot of problems working where people
are known to you.

Police Inspector Santosh Desai seeking transfer from Quepem stated
that as Quepem is close to his native village Cuncolim it is difficult
for him to function at that Police Station.

Calangute Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar who resides at Verem sought
transfer to Airport Immigration in Vasco on the grounds that he is
unable to look after his 65 year old mother properly.

Police Inspector Rajendra Prabhudesai seeking transfer from Margao
Police station stated that Margao being a busy police station he is
not able to look after his wife and only child and so wants to work at
a less burdened police station.

Thanks for the info on Goanet which clearly shows via the writings of
Pirolkar the intent of the MG party to demolish the Catholic Goans. The crooks
under the leadership of Bandodcar were heralded into power in 1964 in an
alleged rigged poll. Then came the?scheme of a duff Opinion Poll to get Goa
merged into maharastra wadi which Goans foolishly subscribed?but won thanks to
the Goan militants?like Maurilio Furtado and Prof. Olympio Dias who supported
the hands of Dr. Jack Sequeira - of the anti-merger movement.
?
If not for the gallant efforts of these Goans,? Goanet net today would
probably have had the name of Gomantak net and one of its moderators forced to
convert to hinduism may have had the name of Sivaji Norendra.
?
The next step of the MG were to bring in maratistas to work in the
government, if that was enough after the death of Bandodcar (after his cargo of
gold was found) the attempted pogrom continued by his daughter Sashikala
Kakodkar. Thanks to the student movement in the late seventies which than saw
the death of MG.
?
One wonders where were the caste and Portuguese bashers during the 60's?
They are often seen on Goanet. Can they save a sinking Goa now free from MG,
but faced with new challenges like Manohar Parrikar, HJS or RSS?

Thanks for your faith in ayurveda. Most ayurvedic texts including samhitas start
with the Fever chapter. And hundreds of remedies depending on dosha content of

use ayurvedic yardstick, not the names such as swine, H1N1 coined by modern

The pulse indicates the likelihood of disease even before symptoms appear or
tests are conducted. Timely changes in diet, lifestyle and herbal decoctions
which you mentioned do work. And stronger formulations offered by Ras-shastra
are useful if the disease has advanced further. Be it H1N1 or whatever name
scientists give. Look how someone obtained good relief by using garlic alone, as

Of course time is running out, as the Corrupt Congress Party is busy filling

[Goanet] God and You

2009-08-10 Thread Albert Desouza

Albert writes:- Isaiah prophet came into the world at least six thousand years
before Jesus was born. God predicted about Jesus through Isaiah six thousand
years ago when God spoke about a servant of God suffering for the sake of
others. Do you know Jesus is our lord ? if it is yes why indulge yourself in
worshiping the idols ? In the same book of isaiah it says about worshiping
idols. God is firm in His statement I am the; Lord Your God there shall be no
other gods before me. Why do we take this statement very lightly? Why do our
leaders take God very lightly ? We are worried about materials found on earth
without bothering about the creator of these materials. Human beings are
victims of man's own experiments. Today even though God has given us simple
commandments and have given us Jesus yet we are far way from him. Today the
Catholic church is only celebrating feasts which are mere festivals like any
other festival like even film festival or food festival. If these feasts had
any effect on humans today world would be worth living. These feasts will go on
and on till Jesus comes again. I believe in living Jesus. I still feel that
Jesus is living within me. There is no place for the living God except in your
heart. My body is the temple of God and so too our bodies. If we respect other
people we respect God. Let us not pose our nose in the air and feel that our
religion is the true religion because it does not contain Jesus at its
foundation. Frankly speaking Catholic religion is a big tiatr. There is nothing
in it.

Excuses, excuses!
If you have flown out of the coop, you have done it because you value your
economic interests more than preserving Goa's culture. And guess, what? There
is nothing wrong with that. Most of us who live outside Goa, do so for economic
reasons, because we have a stronger craving for physical wealth than for
preserving some hard to measure aspect of preserving Goa or its culture. Trying
to influence the future of Goa and attempting to victimize the migrants from

Bottom line is that migrants, foreigners etc have come to Goa because it makes
economic sense for them and for the economy as a whole. This is how free

the migrants, but bad governence - mostly Goans, elected by mostly Goans.

When evolution itself was an accident, which started from a mass explosion of a
heavenly body in space, which triggered off evolution, why do we think human and
human birth is otherwise ? We could have been anything from an amebic cell to
apes to the most complex humans. So first and foremost we are humans by accident
itself.

Ghanti's can be taken as a derogatory term but it can also be used to denote the
habitat of people living around the Ghatts, we know it's a sensitive term, but
if I am a pig-eater, I wouldn't mind being called a pig-eater, because I eat and
like eating the damned thing in the first place ! Otherwise wouldn't I be a
hypocrite ?

Now it is indeed very interesting to note that a literary figure of your status
should call the term Goan interests vague, we all know of the three F that
interests Goans, Fish, Feni and Football though there could be a lot more, but
at this point in time the real interests for Goans are very rightly mentioned by
thyself in the form of education, health, culture etc, having the wisdom of
Solomon one shouldn't play dumb in the first place. It is indeed pathetic that
our elected representatives show no interest in developing these very important
fields which will lead us to development, on the contrary negative development
is entrapped, enticed and enhanced for personal gains and that's the evil that
we are fighting today.

With illegal mining and mega housing, our corrupt politicians keep on soaring up
their stocks and at the same build up unhealthy vote banks, distributing ration
card and voting rights to every Tom, Dick and Harry that comes into Goa, without
trying to improve their living conditions, which exerts further pressure on the
already stretched to the limit infrastructure.

Illegal mining has devastated our forests, wild life, water bodies and our
ecology, mega housing has destroyed hills, fields, wells and ponds, and for what
purpose ? These two evils have brought in the third, influx of uncontrolled
migrants. Stop mega housing and illegal mining and the honeycomb will be left
dry without honey, so there will be no reason to come running to Goa in hoards.
We all are aware of the strain on our infrastructure so why not voice it ? I am
sure you will not support illegal mining and mega housing, so let's fight to
stop these two evils first and we won't have to bother about the third, if your
are so sensitive about migrants.

As mentioned we are not against migrants, it's the influx that needs to be
curtailed and controlled. It's very much true that these diversions are created
by our politicians so that while we are busy debating and fighting between
ourselves they get to feather their nests even further. So if we have the
knowledge and the wisdom of Solomon around why not put it to constructive use ?

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: The price of language chauvinism: English education in Goa (Nisser Dias)

2009-08-10 Thread Goanet Reader
The price of language chauvinism: English education in Goa

BY NISSER DIAS
nisserd...@gmail.com

Goa is said to be one most literate state in the country.
Yet, for almost twenty years now, we are still discussing and
debating the medium of instruction suitable for our children.
This seems to be a clear indication that either our education
policy is not defined or the market forces are demanding
something else.

However though, the irony is that medium of instruction, *was
and is* being decided by the politicians and
nouveau-academicians instead of educationists. Worst still is
the fact that these politicians, besides being regional
language chauvinists, do not have much education
qualifications on their circular vitae to decide upon the
medium of instruction in schools.

Immediately after Liberation, education in our
government schools was imparted in Konkani and
Marathi (Poona Board), then it was shifted to
English (Goa Board). Then in the 1990s, Progressive
Democratic Front government cobbled together by
Churchill Alemao -- most Goans know his
qualification -- gave an opportunity to then
education minister, whose love for Maharashtra is
deep-rooted, to change the medium of instruction.
And Shashikala Kakodkar did just that. She forced
schools imparting primary education in English to
move to regional languages, i.e. Konkani and Marathi.

Before this move of the PDF government, thousands of students
who had passed out through schools with English as medium of
instruction from pre-primary to SSC have become parents now.
And it is these parents who find it difficult to tutor their
children in Konkani or Marathi. Hence the demand for
admitting their children in private unaided schools, who
instruct through English.

Undoubtedly, not only the elected representatives but also
the people should strive to teach their children the
'language of the land'. In Goa it is Konkani. But this does
not mean that the government has to impose on the parents the
decision in what language they should educate their children.
This choice in a democratic country like India should
ultimately lie with the parents.

We, as parents of this generation, are not demanding
something impossible. What we are asking is, let the choice
be ours. Let there be Konkani, Marathi, Urdu and other
regional languages school but also make grants available to
schools wanting to impart primary education in English.

What is the government afraid of? Is that parents
will only seek admission in schools imparting
education in English? Or is the government scared
of handful of regional language chauvinists,
popularly known as Konkaniwadis or Marathi lovers,
  or know-it-all politicians?

If the government is really interested in promoting Konkani
or Marathi, it should include clauses in the Education Act
and Rules or the education policy, that teaching of Konkani
or Marathi as a subject will be compulsory from Std. I to X.
Provide more incentives to managements of aided schools who
continue to impart education in Konkani and Marathi.

I am aware that the Konkaniwadis or Marathi lovers and
politicians have the right to demand benefits for the
regional languages. But in no way have they the right to
advise the government to deny the rights of thousands of
parents seeking education in the English medium of
instruction for their children. We also pay taxes and cess
for education in this country and thus have our right to
choose.

Konkani-wadis or Marathi lovers and politicians who are
adamant on denying us this right to choose the medium of
instruction for our children have already educated their
children in the medium of their choice, but for god's sake do
not decide for parents whose children are currently studying
in schools and force them to study in regional language. We
also have got a vision and we have to secure the future of
our children. Konkaniwadis or Marathi lovers or politicians
cannot and will not secure the future of our children.

Now coming to the issue of mother tongue, Curtorim MLA
Reginald Lourence read the definition of mother tongue from
the Goa School Education Rules 1986, Rule 6 (3) states, The
mother tongue of the child shall be the language declared as
such, in writing by the parent or the guardian at the time of
admission of the child in the school.

But, Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar sought to
differ with him and referred to a dictionary and
reading from a dictionary said mother tongue is the
language spoken by the peers and neighbours, but
not the mother to the child.

I wonder what has more sanctity, the Education Rules framed
for the state, or an English dictionary.

Furthermore, it has been scientifically proven that the
foetus responds to the parent's voice while in the womb
itself, so naturally

[Goanet] The Cry of the Disposessed .

2009-08-10 Thread Carmen Miranda
Thank you Diana Pinto for your piece - *The Cry of the Disposessed* .

I was both glad and sad to read your article. I sincerely hope that this
government's lack of respect for the will of the people that put them in
power, backfires.

I hope the farmers's protests turn into a serious and effective people's
revolt ! The protests should continue, and should be relentless, until the
government begins to listen, stops and thinks again.

But I suspect that the levels of ignorance and shortsightedness of Goa's
government will continue to be a source of anger and frustration for
sometime - at least until goans learn not to vote for dangerously
irresponsible and ignorant people ! We live in dangerous times as far as
the planet's climate is concerned and Goa needs a government that is aware
of these dangers and has the courage to take decisions that may be less
profitable for their pockets right now, but that will prove to be a
lifeline for the goans in the near future!

I am alarmed and disturbed with the fact that at a time when governments
around the world are all concerned about FOOD SECURITY ( even today in the
UK there was a government report about the need for UK to start growing more
of its food because climate change will lead to a lot of uncertainty about
production of food all over the planet ) - Goa's ministers are busy
converting good agricultural land into land for the construction of ill
conceived and probably unnecessary and unsustainable projects! It seems to
me that in the process of trying to solve one problem they will create
several serious problems and are neither aware of it nor do they care or
think of the future of Goa and goans.

The ongoing convertion of good agricultural land for construction is
unsustainable and will be catastrophic for the future of Goa.? Are the
politicians capable of understanding this, and are they aware of the
enormity of the negative impact of this policy?

I doubt it!

The Cry of the Dispossessed - Diana Pinto

It was a rallying of the constituency of the dispossessed. Farmers from all
over Goa gathered in strength at Margao's Lohia Maidan on 2nd August to
speak their hearts out on the fatal blows dealt to them by the Government's
ongoing land acquisition program executed in the name of so called
development - the Congress government's euphemism for the total
destruction of this once beautiful land.

Throughout the length and breadth of the state, the aam aadmi government
is busily engaged in finding ways and means of cornering huge tracts of aam
aadmi land with the help of the draconian and antiquated Land Acquisition
Act of 1894. Mopa Airport, super expressways, an ultra modern Sports City in
Dhargal, expansion of existing Industrial estates and now the Health
Ministers' latest brainchild - the Goa Health Services Development Act 2008
that prohibits the common citizen from exercising his legitimate right to
voice his protest against this high handed land acquisition of the
government for the construction of five star Health Resorts or other
projects set up for the benefit of the high and the mighty. The stark
tragedy for Goa is that all these grandiose projects involve colossal
amounts of cultivable paddy fields and orchard land.

In fact, the sites for the new South Goa Collectorate and District Hospital
on the outskirts of Margao are an affront to every citizen of Goa. They
portray with symbolic poignancy the lawlessness of a Government that
considers itself above and beyond the rules laid down for the rest of us
mamuli log. Farmers have been summarily evicted from their livelihood and
fields, which have been filled by the government in order to construct these
institutions of governance.

The intense indignation of the ordinary farmers that triggered a ready
response in their fellow Goans who had turned out in numbers at Lohia Maidan
to express their solidarity, should send strong indications to the
government of the day of the alarming disconnect between its policies and
the aspirations of the people. It is now clear that land is being cornered
disproportionately for industry and so called developmental projects at
the cost of agriculture and traditional occupations, leading to massive
occupational displacement and resentment amongst the populace. The kind of
development that is being imposed upon us has put an unbearable pressure on
the environment and the common man, and will undoubtedly lead to serious
depletion of cultivable land and natural resources that will impact the
quality of our lives and that of our future generations.

The devastation caused by the Goa Government's strange idea of development
has only been

2009-08-10 Thread Arwin Mesquita
*GXE seeks Guv, CM response in saving agriculture lands*
 **
*HERALD REPORTER
*

*MARGAO, AUG 6
*

Four days after holding an impressive rally at the historic Lohia Maidan,
the Goenchea Xetkarancho Ekvott has sought the immediate response of Chief
Minister, Digambar Kamat and Goa governor to save agricultural lands and the
lives of the future generations.

The Chief Minister was told not to blindly copy the failings of the West,
but set an example that would be the guiding light for the rest of the
world, plagued as it is by short-sighted greed of a few and grave
environmental and socio-economic problems of the masses.

“This is a desperate appeal from all citizens of Goa to the Goa government
to save this veritable paradise on earth from irreversible destruction. If
our demands are not met, it is certain that the future generations will have
nothing but contempt and curses for all of us for our short-sighted greed”,
GXE secretary Paulo Fernandes said.

Saying that tiny Goa is faced with the greatest threat in its history in the
form of the blind adoption of western policies by the state government, the
GXE charged the government for trying to transform the state in to a replica
of Singapore. “Infrastructure projects, industrial estates and other large
construction projects are arbitrarily forced on the unwilling citizenry,
whose small land holdings are being indiscriminately acquired and converted
from prime agricultural lands into concrete jungles”, Paulo said.

He said the backward Communities of Goa, who are the biggest sufferers in
this assault are being displaced in thousands turning these ancient,
self-sufficient ecological communities into ecological refugees.

The GXE said the traditional ecological communities of Goa, which account
for the majority of its population, are today facing a grave threat due to
wrong policies, lack of planning and poor governance.

Paulo said the farmers of Goa have been forced to take this last stand for
survival or to fight to the very end besieged by sprawling constructions and
indiscriminate mining, displaced by arbitrary acquisitions of prime
agricultural lands for ill-conceived infrastructure, industrial and other
projects and harassed by unmanageable pollution and government indifference.

Very well said, Joao.

This is the glaring example that there is no government governing Goa. It is
an altogether 'FREE FOR ALL'
If there was, then what the government does/says is the onliest thing to
do/say with all ruling side guns trained at the opposition to defend the
government's moves.
That is if the government is functioning . co-ordinated actions et
al.

The very fact that the ruling MLAs and Ministers are at logger-heads with
their own government and with one another only goes to show that the ruling
government is working at cross-purposes with itself because there is no
CO-ORDINATION OF ACTION.

That means EVERY ONE OF THESE GUYS ( WHO HAVE GOT THEMSELVES ELECTIED ON
THEIR OWN STEAM BY PURCHASING THE PARTY TICKETS FOR HUGE SUMS OF MONEY)
THINKS/WORKS/ACTS ON HIS/HER OWN FOR HIS/HER OWN SELFISH INTERESTS.

Hope Goans realise this fact.

But Mario Goveia’s piece on Obama THE EUPHORIA HAS EVAPORATED forced me to

Mario responds:

Since it is YOU who is reacting, not only to the events in Goa, but to my

Carmen wrote:

Mario responds:

What makes you think that your opinions on Comrade Obama are serious? I

It has obviously not even crossed your mind that people settled in the US have
a better sense of Obama's destructive radicalism than you do, who has no vested
interest in the US and is getting your information mainly from Britain's left

Carmen wrote:

Well, where were all those several far more accomplished African-Americans?
The ones I vaguely remember were Republicans I think, that is what made them

campaign here in the UK and I don’t recall any more African-Americans running
for President. Where were they hiding?

Mario responds:

The more qualified African Americans I had in mind do happen to be Republicans
like Colin Powell and Condi Rice, but their political affiliation is not what
made them more qualified.

Both Powell and Rice have long and distinguished records of executive
accomplishment running huge organizations and conducting US foreign policy.
They are both American phenoms with towering intellects on top of their vast
executive experience.

Compare that with Comrade Obama, who started on the wrong foot by having his
transcripts at Columbia and Harvard sealed, while proclaiming, falsely, to be
the most transparent President in history.

His only previous experience was as a community agitator, before being elected
a state senator in Illinois where he developed a reputation for voting
Present, i.e. neither Yea or Nay, and for voting against the Born Alive
Infant Protection Act which requires abortion doctors to protect the lives of
infants born from botched abortions, who were previously being left to die
unattended. Imagine that. He voted against this act.

Then he was elected a US Senator and spent only 150 days in the Senate before
beginning his run for President. In the Senate he did not author a single
bill, but spent his time writing two autobiographies.

Thus Comrade Obama had neither executive nor legislative experience and had no
achievements in the Senate. NIL. His only discernible skill is reading
fluently from a teleprompter speeches written by others. We are now paying
dearly for this inexperience as he has quadrupled the deficit without
stimulating the economy because 95% of the money that has been spent has gone
to support the budgets of local and state governments and not into the small
and medium sized private sector where over 80% of the jobs are created in the
US. This is even before including his grab for health care and the pretense
that he can change the climate of the world without Russia, China, India,
Brazil, Mexico and all the other less developed countries participating.

His election is akin to a company taking a junior employee from the Community
Relations Department of the largest organization in the world, who had joined
less than six months ago, and making him the CEO and Chairman of the Board of
the organization.

Carmen wrote:

And what on earth is meant by QUOTE - who (Obama?) *is likely to set

I was referring to minority politicians here, not the African American
community as a whole. What I meant was that Americans will be very skeptical
of black politicians with silver tongues in the future.

On the other hand, I believe it will help Indian Americans like Bobby Jindal,
because his color will be a non issue. Besides Jindal is a solid intellect -
Rhodes scholar - and a prodigy at running huge government programs and is
developing a solid record of achievement cleaning up one of our most corrupt

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - WORLD DAMAN DAY 2009
http://web.me.com/noelgama/wdd09/Press_Release.html

World Daman Day ‘09

DAMAN,
8 August 2009:

Following the resounding success of the first-ever,
WORLD DAMAN DAY last year, the organizers launched into the second year
as early as April 2009 for the worldwide celebration of the 2nd World
Daman Day on the 20th of August 2009 under the aegis of World Goa Day
courtesy, London-based founder, Rene Barreto.

“Daman has always looked upon Goa as its 'Big Brother.’ But no two fingers are
alike and so it is with siblings. These cultural differences though
subtle, lend Daman its uniqueness. This worldwide event is a
celebration of the unique culture of the people of Daman who have an
identity of their very own – the Damanense,” says Daman-based author,
Noël Gama who is the Overall Coordinator of the event.

The theme of World Daman Day 2009 is, “Viva Damao! Come, Discover Daman.”
“Damão is not just the former name of Daman,” clarified Mr. Gama.
“It’s another name for the Indo-Portuguese subculture of Daman and is a
way of life. But most importantly, when broken up into its two
syllables, it reveals the secret behind the characteristic hospitality
of the typical Damanense – 'Da mão' – which literally translates to
'give me your hand,' in Portuguese meaning, ‘Welcome!’

Damanenses around the globe in countries like the UK, US, UAE, Canada, Portugal,
Macau and Holland among others, celebrate all things Damanense by
showcasing their Damanense cultural heritage through artistic and
cultural expressions such as musical and food festivals, competitions,
traditional and folk dance performances, art and craft displays, etc.

While World Daman Day is mainly celebrated by Damanenses outside Daman, in
Daman itself there will be a football match on the 16th of August at
5pm in the sport ground in Moti Daman and on the big day itself, a
cultural program in the evening. More information can be found at

Many of our Doctors and Nurses in the U.K. are non white, in fact the

Gabe is absolutely correct. British health care, for those who can survive the

Unfortunately for Goans and Indians there are so many of our own Goans and

[Goanet] FWD: People do not need housing projects

*Pls see letter in the Navhind Times*

*People do not Need Housing Projects
*THIS is with reference to the news item ‘Criteria for mega projects
finalised’ (NT, August 6). With so many building projects around, and Goa’s
infrastructure under severe strain, there can only be demerits to these
projects, small or mega size. Under these circumstances it is surprising
that the CM, Mr Digambar Kamat has taken the initiative of defining what a
mega project is and clearing some of the 17 pending mega projects. Today,
with real estate in the doldrums, there are hundreds of flats and bungalows
lying vacant and waiting to be sold. Even at the prevailing reduced prices,
these apartments are out of reach of most Goans. Ultimately, it is the
outsiders who purchase them, with builders reaping huge profits. This
unfortunately has been the trend over the past decade, with vested interests
at work, even as the Goa government voices its concern over the increasing
migrant population and the loss of Goan identity. It is therefore time we
got our priorities right by tackling some of the more pressing problems
affecting the day-to-day living of the local population. Until this is done,
it is unlikely that the people of Goa will relent and stop opposing the
building projects–small or big.

[Goanet] Influx of uncontrolled Migrants into Goa

2009-08-10 Thread Mario Goveia

Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2009 09:16:37 +0400
From: Freddy Fernandes ffernandes@emaar.ae

As mentioned we are not against migrants, it's the influx that needs to be
curtailed and controlled. It's very much true that these diversions are created
by our politicians so that while we are busy debating and fighting between
ourselves they get to feather their nests even further. So if we have the
knowledge and the wisdom of Solomon around why not put it to constructive use ?

Mario observes:

C'mon, Eddie. Kitem mhontai, re? Of course you are against migrants. How do
you propose to control or curtail the influx just by huffing and puffing?

Knowledge and wisdom of Solomon? Do you think a small group of wise men can
know what's best for everyone else, better than they do?

Do you remember permutations and combinations from high school or college math?
Make a list of all the elements in Goa that Goans think is important and then
see how many combinations of relationships between the factors that comes to.
It would run into the billions. Do you think any politician or group of
politicians can manage such complexity? Do you know that it is this simple
mathematical fact that causes socialist economies to collapse and free market
economies to thrive unless interfered with by politicians who always think they
know better?

Here's a nice one-page article that explains the principle.

http://www.creators.com/opinion/walter-williams/economic-miracle.html

Ask a mathematics teacher in the Gulf to explain it to you. Apply it to Goa.
Good luck.

[Goanet] Remembering Dr. Olivinho Gomes

2009-08-10 Thread Tomazinho
Remembering Prof. Olivinho Gomes

? Tomazinho Cardozo

He held high positions in the Central Government, he put the foundation of
Post-Graduate education in Konkani in the Goa University, he published over 40
books which included research, travelogues, translations and creative writings,
he
was the only Konkani writer who served Konkani in both scripts, Roman and
Devanogori, etc., etc. Dr. Olivinho could be considered a one man institution
whose
mastery over Konkani language, its history and over Goa and its identity was
simply
superb. It pains to observe that such an experienced and literary-rich life is
snatched away at the age of only 66 years.

Born in 1943 at St. Stevao, Ilhas, Goa Dr. Olivinho Gomes had his secondary
education in Don Bosco High School, Panjim. Did Lyceum in Portuguese and
successfully completed his graduation in English Literature and post-graduation
in
Psychology Sociology with flying colours. He obtained his Ph. D. in
Sociology. In
1969 he passed Indian Revenue Service (IRS) examination. He is one of the very
few
Goans who could do IRS. He was posted at various states in Customs Central
Excise
by the Central Government. He also worked in the Finance Ministry at New Delhi
at
various important positions.

He had well settled in life as far as his lucrative service in the Central
Government was concerned. But his love towards Goa and Konkani language was
more
prominent in him than anything else. Fortunately there arose an opportunity to
serve
Goa and Konkani language. He was selected as Professor of Konkani Language and
Literature under UGC norms at the Goa University.

He became the first Head of Konkani Department at the Goa University and worked
successfully to set up under post-graduate studies up to Ph.D. He was Dean,
Faculty of Languages Literature in charge of French, English, Portuguese,
Hindi,
Marathi and Konkani Departments Italian courses. He was the member of Goa
University's Executive Council and other bodies; Board of Studies in History
Chair
of BOS in French, Konkani, Journalism Mass Communications. He also served Goa
University as its Vice-Chancellor. He served the literary field as an expert at
various panels such as UGC, NCERT, U.P.S.C., K.K. Birla Foundation other
national
academic /literary bodies, including that of Indian Languages Promotion Council
headed by the Prime Minister.

A researcher par excellence he presented papers/lectures chaired sessions at
national /international conferences on history, language, culture, literature,
sociology-anthropology, etc., in and outside the country i.e. in Delhi, Ranchi,
Mumbai, Goa, Lisbon, Paris, London, Gottingen (Germany), Vienna, Oporto,
Toronto,
Sydney, Nihon (Japan), Beijing, Kuala Lumpur Sungai Pettani (Malaysia). Some
of
his papers are collected under A scholarly world of culture (2009). So far he
has
published 40 books in Konkani in English. He has won awards nationally as
well as
internationally for research and literary work in poetry, short-stories,
translations, including National Sahitya Akademi Award for Translation, 1993,
and
that of V.X.Verodiano Foundation (USA),1997; and Research Fellowships from
Portuguese Orient Foundation, French Government, U.G.C. (India), Dempo Trust,
Commonwealth Fellowship, 1990 in London, and National Fellowship for
outstanding
artistes (2005-07) from Ministry of Culture, Goverment of India. He was
associated
with Authors' Guild of India; The Poetry Society (India); Centre for Literary
Translation; Indian Sociological Society; Indian Institute of Public
Administration; Indian Society for Commonwealth Studies, etc., etc.

Although Dr. Gomes is one of the few Goans who achieved a lot on the literary
field - Konkani as well as other languages - I regret to state that he had to
face
opposition from a section of the people at every level who consider themselves
as
the sole 'pundits' of Konkani language. When he was selected to be the
Professor of
Konkani Language and Literature in the Goa University, there was a sort of an
earthquake among his opponents who went all out to see that he was removed from
that
post. Many other Konkani protagonists including me could observe the hidden
agenda
of these people and lodged a counter protest against those whose ego was hurt
because Dr. Olivinho Gomes, a person from outside their caucus, was selected
for
that coveted post. In spite of opposition from our own people, Dr. Gomes did
not
deter at all and marched forward with dedication to achieve the goals set by
him. He
succeeded in his mission.

Dr. Olivinho Gomes was a great asset to the Konkani language. It is not because
I
say so but it is definitely because of his past records. But unfortunately he
did
not get due respect and recognition for his valuable works from institutions
working
for Konkani language in the present times. He was awarded Sahitya Academy Award
for
