[Goanet] Ivor D'Cunha - the little show man of Assolna -By Sabina Fernandes e Dias
Ivor D'Cunha - the little show man of Assolna By Sabina Fernandes e Dias - Dubai Ivor D'Cunha - a devoted artist, lover of Konkani and Goa's culture is a bunch of talents - be it singing, acting, and composing of lyrics or script for tiatr, mimicry or comic roles. His deep love for Goa's culture and the Konkani language is evident from some of his work transcended in his song albums, musical shows and Tiatr's. Talents are God's gift to us and how we nurture our talents is our gift to the creator is what he believes in. Success in not achieved overnight and the journey is long, tedious and challenging. In the year 1992, way back during our college days at CES (Cuncolim Education Society's College) Cuncolim, Goa is when I met Ivor. During free lectures he was seen demonstrating mimicry in the college corridors entertaining his friends. Very confident, never shy, just loved to entertain. At the annual Social day, is what I witnessed was the real talent of this little show man. Born in a traditional and beautiful village of Assolna, in Salcette, South of Goa he grew up as a simple country boy. But, nobody could stop his craving from getting into a showman who has over 3 unique styled Konkani hit song albums released within a span of just four years. Ivor recalls himself as a child singing and acting in the bolcao (verandah) of his house, his passion for singing Konkani songs and acting in Konkani stage shows. Love for traditions, culture, Konkani our mother tongue and fostering this culture with his multifaceted talents has remained his passion always. Nach Kumpasar, Konkani pop album by Ivor D’cunha Ivor in a comedian role in his early day …. Hi first tiatr ….. Noxibantlem I will not be wrong to say that the Church and the parish schools has played vital role in nurturing young talents to professional singers, actors, musicians or entertainers. Ivor did not remain confined to the bolaco as his stage but stepped out, grabbed every opportunity that came his way be it in the school function or the parish feast, Christmas or village Carnival. His first stage performance was at a young age of 12 years in his native village for a Hindu festival program where he had this golden opportunity to sing along with a well known tiatrist of that time. He boldly sang popular Konkani songs at school, church functions and village entertainment programs which today have transformed him to write lyrics and sing his own creation. His first and only tiatr titled Noxibantlem was staged with the help of the Parish Youth association. The audience highly applauded the first show of this tiatr in his home town which engendered the popularity and demand to stage the same tiatr adding 18 more shows in different parts of Goa. Since then it was no looking back. He has also acted and sang for other professional directors in Goa as well as in Dubai. Scripting and directing ‘One Act Plays' one of the difficult form of stage shows brought laurels to his career during his teens. He wrote these one act plays as per the requirement of the occasion for college gatherings, village functions and for youth competitions. He adds, script writing and construction of lyrics is just a natural flow of thoughts inspired by routine life's experiences mingled with the imagination of an artist, colored with melody and drama. We can comfortably relate Ivor more for his trendy pop albums and musical shows. Today he has 2 pop albums and 1 Gospel album which have turned to be far successful. He also mentions doing scripting and writing lyrics for a well known director of Goa's Konkani stage whose name he holds as very confidential. Parish youth activities were motivated with his initiative and rightfully owned credit by winning various cultural accolades at the Parish deanery of South Goa. As usual parents forced him to concentrate on studies. But, at the same time he credits his family for supporting him in organizing cultural activities. He is a self learner and never got any motivation from any recognized artist although his village had a wealth of professional talent. Joining the church youth organization helped him in growing more in his career as a showman. This gave him a good opportunity at the right time as he was able to interact with notable personalities around Goa other than his local village and performed on different occasions. ‘Doria Degher Nach' was his first music collection - a pop album; this included a balanced harmony of Goan flavored music retaining the original rhythm of Goan traditional melody. It was a successful bled of classical music mixed with modern tones and was highly accepted by both the younger and older generations. Together Forever a sensational piece of music from this first album is very dear to his heart and was composed keeping the Goan weddings in mind. Today this song has become a popular number for wedding receptions as the wedding specia

[Goanet] ICS- Timely Tips- H.E. Ambassador's message to the Indian Community
Dear Member of the Indian Community in Kuwait, Following the India Tourism road show held in Kuwait in October 2009, the Embassy co-hosted a week-long “Festival of India in Kuwait” in November 2009. Working Groups on Hydrocarbons (December 2009) and Labour, Employment and Manpower Development (January 2010) were convened in Kuwait as preparation for the Joint Ministerial Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation to meet in Kuwait later this year. The stand-alone visit to Kuwait from 3-4 February 2010 by External Affairs Minister HE S.M. Krishna, was the Minister’s first visit to the Gulf since taking charge of External Affairs. His meetings with HH the Amir, HH the Prime Minister, HE the Deputy PM & Foreign Minister, and others reaffirmed our close and friendly ties. An Indian Food Festival was hosted at the landmark Kuwait Towers from April 1-7, 2010. After sending four Kuwaiti newspaper journalists to India last year, we sent six more journalists to India in May 2010, leading to enhanced coverage of tourist destinations in Kerala, Goa, etc. Tourism to India was promoted at the Travel World Expo 2010 in Kuwait from May 19-22, 2010. This letter focuses on consular/welfare issues and reiterates some of the points contained in my letters of May 26, 2009, and October 14, 2009, since we continue to receive queries about them. Passport/Visa: The Service Centers opened at Sharq and Fahaheel on May 27, 2009, are functioning satisfactorily. Over the past year, we have maintained a turn-around delivery time of 3-4 working days after an application is made. Kindly also note that an applicant for passport/visa service can authorize another person to file his/her application through an authority letter and copy of his/her civil ID. Consular Open House: Since October 2009, we have maintained a Consular Open House procedure at the Embassy (1000-1100 hrs & 1430-1530 hrs; all working days) by which a senior consular official can be met without appointment in the Embassy Consular Room to discuss any consular issue. Registration of Birth/Passport for new-born baby: There is no need to bring a new-born to the Embassy or Service Centre for applying for registration of its birth/passport. Applications from parents will be accepted without the presence of the baby. If there is no alternative to bringing along the baby, kindly approach staff on duty for out-of-turn service. Online Registration: In July 2009, the form on the Embassy website was upgraded to confirm receipt of a completed registration. Kindly register, if not done so. Police Clearance Certificates (PCC): Embassy-issued PCCs were accepted till recently by local authorities for residency purpose. However, several weeks ago the Kuwait authorities stopped attesting PCCs issued by the Embassy, requiring instead that PCCs be issued by the authorities in the country of origin of the applicant. This is also being specified on visas issued by the Kuwait authorities. While local legal requirements have to be fully respected, our concerns on this issue were shared with the Kuwaiti authorities on several occasions over the last month and a half and their response is awaited. Meanwhile, the Embassy can only attest PCCs issued by RPOs in India, duly attested by the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, and Kuwait Embassy/Consulate in India. However, the Embassy would continue to issue PCCs to applicants who are in Kuwait on family/dependent visa as also to those who need a PCC for their stay in Kuwait in the context of their migration to a third country. Affidavit Attestation: The attestation service at the Embassy envisages return delivery normally within 45 minutes of submission of a document. Affidavit forms on the Embassy website were upgraded in May 2009 so that they can be filled up online in English and Arabic. If you can do so, kindly type, print out and bring the completed form with you so as to save time at the Embassy. Following special arrangements have been put in place: Attestation Service for elderly Indians: For all attestation services it is mandatory for the applicant to sign in the presence of the consular officer. However, if an applicant over 75 years is unable to come to the Embassy, an appointment can be fixed and the attestation service will be provided at the applicants residence at no additional charge on second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Re: [Goanet] News: Outsider arrested for accepting too low a bribe
[A] Rajan Parrikar (tongue in cheek) noted that an outsider, was arrested yesterday by the Vigilance bureau for accepting an amount that was deemed too low by the standards acceptable to Goa and Goans. [B] soter de Souza wrote: Following the arrest of the migrant Registrar of Cooperatives for corruption we have reports about the arrest of 5 migrants for extortion of garbage collectors in St. Inez. [c] Frederick Noronha wrote: You guys would do yourselves and Goa a big favour if you focussed on corruption, instead of ethnicity! COMMENT: Do not know if "ethnicity" is the appropriate word for use in this context, but even if it is May I ask Frederick Noronha: HOW, focusing on corruption in Goa would do Rajan/Soter etc and/or Goa a big favour? Reading from afar, I took the above Rajan/Soter statements to mean that the nuevo-Bhaille have brought to Goa a depressingly unprecedented level of corruption. Is Frederick suggesting that this is not true, or (if true) is he suggesting that he has been focusing on corruption in his posts to newspapers and news agencies? jc
Re: [Goanet] News: Outsider arrested for accepting too low a bribe
Here comes Frederick the ethnic watch dog for the migrant cause in Goa. Everyone else must fight corruption while his mouth is locked and hands are tied to ensure acceptability of the establishment to avail government schemes. Frederick must first show what he has done to expose corruption in the last 5 years. -Soter

The parade terminated at Philips Square in downtown Montreal and was followed by a concert by performers in different languages and different ethnic groups. Goa was well represented with Jacinta Luis opening the show with a Konkani folk song, Aum Saiba Poltodi Vetam. The nearest "rest room" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_room] was a river away! There are no houses alongside the Chorao ferry point, as you would perhaps be well aware, and at Pomburpa side has has only private homes. I don't know about the infra-red capabilities of the cameras of the two gentlemen mentioned above, but it would be worth a risk if push came to shove. Who wants to risk getting caught on Goanet, or, worse still, on a local daily? As I conveniently advocate: "Be good, if you can't, don't get caught." > 4) Do you not feel any shame in encouraging this sort of activity from > a goanetter, a Goan goanetter I presume, and not a ghatti one like > Vhidyadhar Ghadgil, and thus encouraging actual ghattis to perform > even worse desecrations upon the soil of Goa, our beautiful golden > Goa? Just to set the record straight, V[h]idyadhar G[h]adgil is not a run of the mill ghatti, educated as he is in a "very decent" school across the ghats, in Pune. Of pure Jesuit vintage. (Frankly, I was shocked if not scandalised to learn that we shared the same principals!) As is anti-ghatti Rajan Parrikar, though of Salesian vintage from Panjim. And while on the topic, do you suspect there is some Jesuit-Salesian ideological bias that results in the Left-Right dichotomy we now see in cyberspace? If this were true, it would be strange, turning a full circle (even if unintentional) for those who once spearheaded the Counter-Reformation at least. > 5) Do you not feel that you owe an APOLOGY to all Goans for such > pro-ghatti activity as allowing goanetters to unzip their flies in > full view of nubile Goan virgins? [Goanet] COLUMN: There are no Congressmen left in the Congress Party, only traitors and turncoats?
There are no Congressmen left in the Congress Party, only traitors and turncoats? By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 “I am a congressman”, “I have always been a congressman at heart”, “I have been brought up in the congress culture”, “my soul have always been with the Congress”, these are just some of the favourite lines some of our MLAs wanting to join the oldest political party of Indian history chant before their entry. Reciting these lines in public is like an admission ticket for the traitors who had deserted the party for their share of loaves and fish from other parties in power. Unfortunately, none of the so called Congressman in the Congress party specially in Goa display qualities of the true Congressmen or abide by the values of great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lokmanya Tilak, Motilal Nehru, Subhash Chandra Bose, Gopal Krishna Gokale, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and so many others. Today those who call themselves Congressmen do not even come up to the level of the heels of these great leaders, but whom we have to make do with are traitors and turncoats always on the lookout for opportunity to better their lot instead of working for the masses or downtrodden. History informs us that the Congress was created as a platform for civic and political dialogue of educated Indians with the British rulers. Although an organization before, Congress transformed itself into a political party at the time of independence and became a national vehicle for social reform and human upliftment. During Mahatma Gandhi’s tenure as the president of the Indian National Congress in 1916 to 1920, eligibility for leadership was determined by how much social work and service a member had done, not by his wealth or social standing or if one can win elections. Gandhiji strived hard and allowed ordinary members to voice their dissent, but today we experience just the opposite, leadership is decided by money and muscle power of the individuals and a voice of dissent by an ordinary member are looked upon as indiscipline and are stifled with threats of expulsions and humiliation. Mahatma Gandhi gave up wearing western clothes and resorted to wearing khadi clothes, so also advocated against buying foreign goods, which was followed by other leaders too, but today we see all the so called congress leaders in designer wear and their passion for everything foreign, be it socks to cars is well known and are also flaunted for all to see. Moreover, Gandhiji observed abstinence from meat, alcohol, and promiscuity. But now almost all the congressmen indulge in lavish foods including meats, alcohol and this can be established on the bills that the exchequer has to pay and women for them are to be misused and discarded. Gandhiji also undertook fasting for self-purification and social protest, but the present bunch of Congressmen must have never heard of self purification even during lent season but what is sure is that they indulge in spas in western countries for relaxation and resort to toppling bids, attack on police stations to mark their protest, whether it is illegal of illegal is secondary. The erstwhile congressmen strived to eradicate illiteracy, but you see that more then half the ministers in Goa government led by the Congress are illiterates and to top it all the Education minister, who has recently rejoined the Congress has not even completed his matriculation. Following Gandhi's footsteps, Jawaharlal Nehru and his family abandoned their Western-style clothes, possessions and wealthy lifestyle. His passion for social justice and equality attracted India's Muslims, women and other minorities. His policies were to challenge the landed class, the business class. But today we notice that the Congress leaders in Goa specially giving undue importance to the business class. Draconian regional plan 2011 was drafted and TCP Ordinance was sought to be introduced to benefit builders and estate developers, so was the case with SEZs and even now the ministers are solidly behind the builders lobby, so much so PWD minister Churchill Alemao has compared Goans to ‘squealing pigs’ for objecting to a mega housing project in his constituency. The degeneration of the Congress started with late Indira Gandhi, she grew more and more authoritarian, following allegation of rigging of general election, a court overturned Indira Gandhi’s victory in the Parliamentary constituency. To counter growing opposition she ordered a state of National Emergency in 1975, curtailed the powers of the courts to become a supreme leader. The current so called Congressmen are trying to follow her footsteps, by being complete authoritarian or exercising absolute power and this is what makes them heady to the voices raised by the masses. This is what true Congressmen like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and others refrained from
Re: [Goanet] Re.Goan migrants in the Gulf are causing harm to Arab
Arwin, You obviously replied in haste, because you did not check your facts: 1) I did not know that the Gulf countries were beaming centers of democracy for its locals. Last time I checked, most were ruled by monarchies who deny the rights of their citizens and continue to let in migrant lemmings to do their bidding. At least Goans have the choice of the ballot box. They fact that some of them are easily fooled by politicians who give them cheap tokens or token interviews, is another story! 2) I lived and grew up in the Middle East and know the drill there. They have been talking about measures to protect their identities and economies for an eternity. The bottom line is that so long as migrants like you continue to live and work there and continue to vastly outnumber the locals, their cultures and customs will continue to be overwhelmed. 3) As a migrant worker in the Gulf, you do not have any rights to gain local citizenship as you claim. Isn't it ironic that you proudly claim Indian citizenship, while living abroad, while you choose to deny other Indian citizens to travel, live and work in parts of their own country! As for me, how do you know that I am still not an Indian citizen? In any case, I don't go around like a hypocrite asking that Indian citizen migrants be thrown out of Goa. The bottom line still remains: if you want to prevent migrants from coming in and taking jobs that you would have done, why don't you move back to Goa? You will also contribute to preserving the local Arab cultures that are under threat from migrants such as you. Again, please read this article to understand the destructive impact migrants like you are having on the native and now minority Arabs. Your simple act of moving back to Goa will alleviate both issues and perhaps people will take you more seriously. I know I will! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/14/world/middleeast/14qatar.html Qataris do not see themselves as coddled. Sure, they do not have to pay for electricity, water, education or health care, and they are given land and low-cost loans to build houses when they marry. They are eligible for public assistance if they do not have a job, often receive generous pensions and acknowledge they will not take any jobs they do not consider suitable for them. But they also complain that they do not get paid as much as foreigners, and that foreigners get most of the top jobs in critical industries, like finance, higher education and the media. There is also pervasive frustration that English has become the language of employment, not Arabic, and that local hospitals, restaurants, markets and streets are always crowded with foreigners. “There is a crisis here,” said Muhammad al-Mesfer, a political science professor at Qatar University. “The foreigners are crowding us out.” The tension in Qatar is similar to what has surfaced in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where local people are also vastly outnumbered by foreigners and are sometimes likened to colonial rulers in their own land. [Goanet] Mining concerns.
From a blog-spot. "It is not the only human rights issue largely because there is large number of government agencies – central as well as state agencies involved in the perpetuation of mining industry in Goa in the manner it is proceeding currently. Our intellectuals in the centers of higher learning are yet to apply their minds to this aspect. They are yet calculate what is the cost of ore that we exported over the past 60 years, to which countries, which companies exported how much, how much companies profited, how much foreign exchange Indian government earned? How much Goa government earned as revenue since its liberation? How much colonial Portuguese colonial government benefited from mining industry so as to continue retaining Goa as its colony till 1961? What was role of mining companies in colonial state? What is the role of mining companies in governance of the state of Goa since 1961 till date? It is not the only Human Rights issue also because almost every major aspect of Goa’s life influenced by mining industry. We hardly have proper audit done in this regard. We only have propaganda of the mining companies that reinforces hegemonic dominance of mining industry over Goa. As a result our minds are constantly filled with negative entropy. Our intellectuals in the centres of learning instead of countering this have involved in furthering this proliferation of confusion to the infinity. One of them has been circulating extracts of mining companies welfare work besides flamboyantsarcasm in prose as well as poetry full of innuendos on people involved in resisting mining industry (without naming them) as well as praises to politician from mining company. Another one Dr. A.G.Chachadi from department of Earth Sciences, Goa University in his reply to PIL at Bombay High Court at Panaji has heaped nasty sarcasm on people of Sirgao who has been active in their struggle for survival from mining industry. He carried on number of studies for mining industries and details were furnished by Goa University in reply to RTI. Third one Dr. Untawale , former director of National Institute of Oceanography, Dona Paula publicly scolded Villager from Pissurlem who demanded that mining companies supply water to their paddy fields. This was on 1st April 2001 at Old Goa Panchayat Hall, Tiswadi. Later on he went to sign the report that in Panchwadi there are no mangroves even though it is densely mangrove populated. He did this in order to back up Sesa Goa’s plans to build exclusive road for mining through Panchwadi. This way scientist has been playing the role of traitors to the people of Goa recently. It was published a month or two ago in Goa. Maybe Goanetters could make issues like these the subject of an international campaign. FN Celebrating inefficiency In a few weeks time, Goa will be celebrating an unusual tenth anniversary. A decade of the grounding of the 'River Princess' off Candolim beach also symbolises ten glorious years of our State's failure to take care of public interest against powerful local interests. This is not the only case of its kind, but a glaring example. When Anil Salgaocar, bought the 'River Princess' from the Onassis Shipping Company in California it was no big secret that the ship would not be sea-worthy in a short time. Even if the ship was to be converted into a trans-shipper for loading iron-ore near the mouth of the Mandovi river, there is no excuse for the callousness with which Goa, her interests and her environment was treated -- by both vessel owners and bureaucrats. When the ship reached Goa, it soon lost its Liberian flag and was further downgraded to a Vanuatu flag. Is Goa content with allowing 'flags of convenience' rule? A year later the 'River Princess' lost its Vanuatu flag and hence its insurance cover too. It might have not mattered much to the owners of the vessel, as it was no longer a sea-going vessel. It was by then already de-gutted to some extent on its way to becoming a trans-shipper. But, as a test of how our State takes care of public interest, all the authorities consistently shut their eyes to this contentious vessel's existence. Even though there are an army of public authorities meant to oversee such issues, there was no caution on the part of the Mercantile Marine Department, the Coast Guard, the Captain of Ports, the Indian Navy, the Inland Waterways Authority of India, the National Institute of Oceanography and the Chief Hydrographer. Not surprisingly, on June 6, 2000, when the 'River Princess' drifted to the Candolim Beach, it did not have a flag, any insurance, propulsion system, crew, sea-worthiness certificate or any piece of paper to establish its legal presence. Who then is responsible? At that stage itself, the Government of Goa would have been well within its rights to take possession of the ship, and tow it away to a ship-breaking yard after the 2000 monsoons. After all, the Chief Secretary also carries the designation of being the Receiver of Wrecks. If action had been prompt, and without favour -- as is expected of the State -- the Government of Goa would have spent probably about Rs. 1 crore for the job and the ship breakers would pay the Goa government about Rs. 8 crore for the scrap metal and other recoveries. Now almost 10 years later, Goa has a huge piece of junk sitting off the Candolim beach which itself has been devastated by distorted wave motion caused by the presence of the 'Princess River'. The government has spent over a crore of rupees on litigation and has lost revenue of probably Rs. 50 crore due to reduced number of tourist arrivals. But who cares? Local fishermen, shack-owners and villagers are in danger of losing their livelihoods; Candolim beach will never be the same again. Now, to cap it all, we have spent Rs. 6 crore on geotubes last year which were supposed to protect what is left of the beach from erosion. Recent indications suggest the Government of Goa is going to break the ship 'in-situ'. It is not clear whether the operation will be carried out from the sea-ward side or the land-ward side of the ship. What about the eight meters of ship believed to be below the sea-bed covered by a few thousand tonnes of sand? The ugly, grounded 'River Princess' vessel lying close to what was a beautiful beach, and an eyesore visible from India's first beach resort nearby, is a clear reminder of the failures of our government, the strength of the lobbies that rule Goa, and the lack of any substantial difference between the whichever political label rules Goa, whether the Congress or the BJP.

Police seek to declare former Goa minister absconder Panaji, July 1 (IANS) Missing for nearly a month, former Goa tourism minister Mickky Pacheco, who is an accused in the mysterious death of his 28-year-old lover, could be declared an absconder, police said Thursday. Pacheco's application for anticipatory bail was rejected by the Supreme Court Thursday. "We will move the trial court in Margao for declaring Mickky as an absconder. We have already sent him several summons, to which he has failed to respond to," a police official said. The former minister went underground after being grilled by the Crime Branch for over nine hours June 4.

Singapore, July 1 - Sharad Pawar, former chief of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, was Thursday takes over as president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) succeeding England's David Morgan, the outgoing chief. The spokesperson of ICC, James Fitzgerald told news media today Pawar has taken over as ICC President from David Morgan who concluded his two-year term. The decision was taken at the world cricket body's annual conference, cricket news agencies reported. Pawar, 69, who is Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution in the Cabinet of the Government of India, will lead the ICC for two years after having served as Morgan's deputy for a similar period. Pawar's appointment follows the controversial rejection of former Australian Prime Minister John Howard's bid for ICC's vice-president's post. Pawar is the second Indian to hold the ICC's top job after Jagmohan Dalmiya's stint in the late nineties. He praised the leadership of outgoing president Morgan, terming it an 'impressive innings'. "David Morgan has set the principles by which the ICC operates and now it is our responsibility to build on his legacy," Pawar said.

[Goanet] Former Goa minister denied anticipatory bail
Former Goa minister denied anticipatory bail (Lead) New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) The Supreme Court Thursday rejected a petition by former Goa tourism minister Mickky Pacheco seeking anticipatory bail in connection with the death of his alleged lover, 28-year-old Nadia Torrado. Nadia died at a Chennai hospital May 30, 15 days after she allegedly consumed rat poison. The vacation bench of the apex court headed by Justice R.M. Lodha and comprising Justice A.K. Patnaik, while rejecting his plea, said: "Unless your custodial interrogation is complete, nothing can be done." The court also asked his counsel about the nature of the relationship between Pacheco and Nadia. "What was the relationship between them," the court asked. It also inquired about the bruises that the deceased suffered about a fortnight before she died. The bruises were also mentioned in her postmortem report. However, the court granted interim bail to Pacheco's aide Lyndon Monteiro. He was an officer on special duty when Pacheco was the tourism minister. The court issued notice, returnable in three weeks, on Monteiro's plea for anticipatory bail. It restrained police from arresting him till then. Earlier, the apex court told senior counsel U.U. Lalit appearing for Pacheco that he was an influential person with political clout and the "chances of tampering with the evidence could not be ruled out". Justice Lodha said: "What (evidence) was there has been destroyed." "Mobile phones and the laptop are missing and they have to be recovered," the court said. When counsel Lalit said that his client was innocent and was framed, Justice Lodha said: "We are restraining ourselves because of its implication." He further said: "We are circumscribed in making observations." "All along, you (Pacheco) were there. (The recovery of) All these (missing gadgets) may help in your exoneration or even implication," the court said. Senior counsel Lalit said that there was nothing against his client. He told the Court that neither the mother of the deceased nor any other relative has alleged anything against Pacheco. The court was told that there was nothing to raise suspicion against the petitioner. Lalit told the court that all along he was with the deceased during her treatment and had spent Rs.40 lakh on her treatment. Pacheco, a Nationalist Congress Party leader, was tourism minister in Chief Minister Digamber Kamat's coalition government in Goa. He had to resign after warrants were issued against him.

The link below is self explanatory- http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Racism_in_Australia Australia has a long history of racism dating back to the founding of the first colony in Sydney Cove. The establishment of the British colony in 1788 was justified by a racist ideology later expressed by the 'Terra Nullius' concept, in which the colonists believed they had first rights to the land over other groups. Racism is closely tied to nationalism, and the use of immigrants as scapegoats during lean economic times.
Re: [Goanet] 'Christian musicians cannot represent India?
The point "This is no way diminishes the contribution of the Goan musicians. There is no need to exaggerate or embroider reality to make this point." is respectfully, and well taken. What helps in this cases is to give a sense of what that sound is or was. Such as, when did it become specifically unique as in the beginning of the "Hindi film music 'sound'" formulation/construction, when did it got melded into prevailing or the next sound; if that did ever happen, then to what degree? When was its presence no longer felt? Was it even a presence in the normative argumentative sense of meaning? And finally was it only a strand of imagination, or resonated by only those who have a specific ear to hear and on occasion intuit shall we say mere inflections. "Hindi film music 'sound'" is a broad spectrum, needless to say. And the awareness that Gonsalves brought, which must not have gone unnoticed by other musicians--presented its own sound palette. Its just like any individual artists palette, which may encompass various ranges, and along with its various aspects of lushness, baroque quality, a tertiary/quaternary complexion with specific colors of high intensity; or it may encompass a broad range, as in my case--my color palette (pigments, dyes, etc.) which has a wide gamut, yet becomes narrow in certain contexts. And that narrowness has its particulars--the same being the case in music and musicians. And I believe people know all of this, if not specifically such an wide-reaching analogy. Articles of such nature will always be hard to write and gain validation, at which point they practically have to be written as papers, or elaborated upon to cover a broad trope/trove of VALID questions, concerns and aspersions, OR solely presented with examples of "Hindi film music 'sound'" at conferences--and that too at conferences/seminars of Indian music to subject the concepts to either rise, thereby gaining credence among Indian experts, or fail and to relinquish them. I have always felt that people claim many things, or posit ideas to resonate with certain notions which have a certain actuality to them, But often they need more exploration, on both sides (sat if there are only two). Often one does not understand a form at a deeper level, and also the one who understands it deeper may have their own issues known only to themselves. BUT more CLARITY and comprehension is expected. In this piece one writer quoted another, obviously expecting that the previous writer has assimilated what he wrote. That is how it goes. In due course of time other writers from the house of Indian music may write more. We shall have to wait, unless others fill in some understanding TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE to be understood by those why MAY NOT (my assumption) have a nuanced ability to hear, see, conjecture, etc. The same may resonate differently in any given sense perception of two different individuals. Hearing, seeing, etc. + For that matter as I would tell my friends at college in Mumbai: just because a woman is sitting with her legs spread apart a bit, and you are telling me "bug, bug" (look, look) there is nothing that can be seen and while you are talking she has not even changed her position. So, are you seeing something in your minds eye. And on top of that that some things as in what an given feminine is wearing that is intended to be unseen etc., does not move me. + And something from the Isha Upanishad: “That moves and That moves not; That is far and the same is near; That is within all this and That also is outside all this.” venantius j pinto Message: 5 > Date: Wed, 30 Jun 2010 22:50:48 -0700 (PDT) > From: "Rajan P. Jim, U have correctly stated what I wanted to say, in response to what great? Santosh had to say on this. I would like to add: The zero may have been invented in India; but this is disputed. The Sumerians the civilisation between the two great rivers in what is now Iraq, are claiming the xero concept is theirs; and that they also used it to invent the decimal system. Indian Harrapa civilisation may have followed uo on that! More importantly Indians of old remained at Zero! Even today India is stuck with counting in Lacs and crores; while the rest of the world has moved on to Millions, billions trillions and zillions. The ancient culture has remained ancient! The modern computing systems are based on the Binary system of counting, and boolean algebra; why? because the computer machine is based on just two states (On or OFF) of the transisitor switch, the flip flop etc. hence the British system of binary count came in handy. The decimal equivalent fed into computers are converted into binary code thru countless algorihtms, and the resultant reconverted into decimal code. There is no other way! Decimal system is very good indeed; the world cannot do without it, but computers do not need it. Nothing else that is good for humanity or the world at large has come from the ancient Indian culture. Oh yes; India gave the world: Kama Sutra and Yoga! One smart Indian saw that peole are enjoying thenselves having good sex and enjoying themselves when India was like paradise! So he wrote, compiled a book showing all the positions and rigours etc. Produce more babies,so that the Brahmins and the Kshatriyas will have more servants and lowly people available for slavery into menial work. What a wonderful brahmin concept. Should the world be grateful for that? Of course not. Then came another smart Indian; who saw that people were having all sorts of physical and mental problems with too much sex and positions demonstrated in the Kams Sutra! etc. He advised Yoga so that people can control their emotions, their activities and above all their mind too. This Indian I like. This is something good for the world; not that it is not manifest in other cultures in different ways. Give him the credit. Nothing else that is good comes to mind that India may have discovered or invented original. Even The simple MOP has yet to arrive in India. Servants are yet made to go down on their knees to swap the floor for the badda sahibs!! Yak! "Ancient Culture Indeed" But is it Good?? I do not think so. The world is laughing. [Goanet] Chauvinism V/s Patriotism - Adv. Radharao Gracias - Herald - June 25, 2010
Although there are many debatable issues / points in an article by Adv. Radharao Gracias, Floriano Lobo's comment on RSS added little more interest to it. In the article Radharao had suggested that the RSS, who forever talks about patriotism, should have made a special effort to fill in the 14,000 vacancies in the army's officer cadre, by urging their followers to apply for these jobs. To which Floriano said that it is the official policy of the government that no member of the RSS would be admitted into the Army! What interested me is that Radharao did not suggest his above views to any other organization(s) from India (like Art of Living, for example) that they should also make the same efforts as he urged the RSS to do. I wonder why? Or has he concluded that there are no other organizations and or political parties in India as patriot as RSS? Best regards, Dr. U. G. Barad

[Goanet] Next Time You're in ... Goa
Next Time You're in ... Goa By Chryselle D'silva Dias Thursday, Jul. 01, 2010 With Goa's connotations of full-moon parties, beaches and backpackers in tie-dyed pants, it's not surprising that most visitors to the Indian state are blithely unaware of its gritty agricultural past. In that respect, the Goa Chitra Museum, tel: (91-832) 657 0877, comes as a genuine revelation. The brainchild of artist turned curator Victor Hugo Gomes, the museum is situated on a working organic farm (also Gomes' home) in the southern Goan town of Benaulim and showcases over 4,000 traditional tools, items of furniture and other objects sourced from across the state. The exhibits include hundreds of tillage implements, in testimony to a time when agriculture was Goa's mainstay. (Now, tourism and mining are the key industries and Goa depends on neighboring states for such staples as cereals and vegetables.) A sugarcane grinder standing almost five meters high is one of the main focal points of the museum. Gomes took over two years to restore it. Supplementing the farming-related displays are exhibitions of vintage paraphernalia and antique furniture, many examples of which were rescued from garbage heaps left beside demolished homes and churches. Dismayed at the speed with which local heritage was vanishing, Gomes visited over 300 traditional buildings in the process of demolition, salvaging doorways, window fittings, pillars, railings and even church altars. Folklore, costume, jewelry and marine displays are scheduled to open at the end of the year. Gomes personally leads hour-long tours of the facility at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, communicating a passion for his native history that elevates Goa Chitra above your run-of-the-mill local museum. The tours take in an on-site gallery of work by local artists, a performance space and a walk around Gomes' 7,400-sq-m farm, where he grows chili, okra and other crops. At the end, visitors are served a refreshing drink made from kokum, a tangy local fruit related to mangosteen. Goa Chitra attracts a steady flow of visitors. Novelist Kiran Desai dropped in recently, as did poet and lyricist Sampooran Singh Kalra (better known as Gulzar), who was so impressed that he donated his fee for a reading to the museum. But don't take his word for it. Re: [Goanet] Y viva Espana!
Dear Gabe, What U have been told or heard, is of course not true! There is no racism in Australia, officially or in practice! For many many years now, it has been so, and that is one of the reasons I am here and enjoying the good non segragated non casteist non racist life, for everyone. If it were not so, then so many uncouth and non integrating Indians would not have been admitted into Australia in the first place, students or worker categories. What is perceived as racism in India due to the recent incidents and even deaths vis a vis Indian students in Australia is not correct; and those incidents are not racially motivated at all. Rather it is a 'resentment blowing out of control' for some very young Australians, of these young Indian students coming here and taking up part time jobs in retail and hospitality, jobs that would have been otherwise done by Aussies. Of course there are other hidden factors too. And who is Australian? There are many Blacks, Browns and Arabs and Persians and Koreans, Vietnamese and Chinese who make up large numbers in Australia everywhere. Are they racist? Many races living together does not mean racism. All these non Anglo Saxon, non Italian, non Greek coomunities (anglos, Celtics, Italians and Greek are the larger white communities here) are now thriving here, and increasing in numbers and proportion everyday. What Indians, I particularly mean Hindus should understand is that, they are the least integrating after the various Muslim groups. All other non white communities are making headway in public and social life, and have earned special rapport and even inter marry with other Australians. Of course there are many good Hindus too, but the majority and more so the new ones coming here are the racist segragated style of living type. Go Back! U are spoiling life for us, who love this country. Indians in India are more racist anytime and everywhere, and these thoughts are brought here, and that is why these new Indians feel different and fail to integrate. They should not feel that any act of discrimination or resentment is necessarily race based. There can be lots of other reasons for that. Imagine a young sardar in Australia learning Hairdressing, to get PR! Very Ingenuine indeed! Many come to take adventage of our generous welfare system; and the elderly from India too, draining the welfare system. My advise: learn to Eat and Enjoy Beef and Bacon first; U will be reborn! Then come to Australia and integrate and inter-marry, if possible; after all Indians adore white fair skin and the pink too! How many foreigners are allowed to work in India and or Goa? How many foreigners in India and in Goa are robbed, drugged and killed? The whole of Indian Hindu Society is Casteist and hence Racist! I will not say Viva to that. Tumko malum nahi hai ki abi Bhahar ke admi ke liye Ration Card dena bhand kiya hai? Tu neh TV pe nahim sunah??"" [You idiot, don't you know that all ration cards are stopped for outsiders? Haven't you watched the TV?] To that , the guy got confused. But there was his agent sitting there [unknown to me but definately a perfect Konkani speaking Ghanti] and he interjected " Paise deh ga toh Goa'me sabkuch milta hai!" [ If you give money you get everything in Goa]. So I asked him "Kisko paisa dehna hai? Minister ko?" [ Whom to give money, the minister?] And he promptly said " Minister ko kheum? Mamlatdar ke office meh bahoot sab dalal haim' [ Why to Minister? There are many agents in the Mamlatdhar's office]. And that is when I, with my usual flair, made the following statement to all who were there at that time "Look here Goans" I said " this is how your Goa is being SOLD Left, Right and Center" "And we Goans are cribbing about saving Goa??" There was a silent acknowledment from all around. But that is that. Nothing else can be done. IF WE GOANS ARE THE PIMPS, WHY SHOULD THE PROSTITUTES NOT FLOURISH IN GOA??? Is the question that I have always asked. My very crystal clear MESSAGE to my brotheren Goans. "Goans do stand in long; serpentine queues to vote for your Sonia and Rahul Gandhi's CONGRESS". "Goans do stand in long, serpentine queues to vote for your Advani's, RSS' and Manohar Parrikar's BJP" "Goans... do stand in not so long, queues to vote for your Sharad Pawar's NCP" "Goans ... do vote for your heart imprisoned 'Lion' of the MGP" "Goans .. (especially from the South) do not fail to vote for your dear 'don panna' [two green leaves] which are already turning yellow. "But but Goans, you make sure that you, even by mistake, do not vote for 'don vati' [two candles] , because, all these ghantis will lose their ration cards and remain hungry on the roads and you will be obliged to feed them from your very own hard earned plates". Cheers floriano goasuraj 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org for scrolling power point presentation of the Party. It is not ENOUGH that GOOD, HONEST citizens contest elections. It is not ENOUGH that GOOD, HONEST citizen voters elect good, honest representatives. GOA urgently needs 'GOOD, HONEST, DISCIPLINED SYSTEM of GOVERNANCE'. Wherein, even a dishonest person is forced to be good, honest n disciplined, or to QUIT. Only through PPS can such 'good, honest n disciplined system of governance' be identified and accepted. PPS GOA =PEOPLE for POLITICAL SANITY = PEOPLE'S POWER SYSTEM for a date in 2012 Display the 'PPS' sticker on your vehicle today, to reject political madness tomorrow.

[Goanet] WORLD KONKANI DAY - 20th August, 2010
WORLD KONKANI DAY 20th August, 2010 Eric Ozario , Chairman , ManddSobhann - Mangalore, India. World Konkani Day is celebrated all over the world to commemorate the inclusion of Konkani in the Eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution. It was on that day in 1992, that Konkani was recognized as a National Language of India, by its inclusion in the Eighth schedule. It is indeed an event to celebrate because it has done us, Konkanis, proud. Though we are only 1/200 of the entire Indian population, Konkani was recognized as one among 18 National Languages from among more than 2000 and odd Indian languages. It speaks for the greatness and completeness of our beloved mother tongue, Konkani. As the President of the KarnatakaKonkani Sahitya Academy, during the 3 years of my tenure, I had brought together all Konkaniorganisations in and around Mangalore to celebrate ‘KonkaniManyata Divas’ (Konkani Recognition Day – as we used to call it), on August 20, every year, in a grand celebration. Last year, through my organization ManddSobhann, we felicitated ‘Extraordinary Konkani Persons’, in many age categories, for simply being extraordinary Konkani people. This year, we will be celebrating World Konkani Day in Mumbai, bringing together Konkani people of every denomination, with pomp and grandeur, as the Curtain Raiser of the World Convention will also unfold that day. We congratulate every Konkani on this ‘World Konkani Day’ and call upon all Konkanis – “KonknniUloi, KonknniFuloi. KonknniBoroi, KonknniUroi”. Let’s respect our variety and seek Konkani unity. Long live Konkani! TOGETHER for KONKANI !! wherever we may be - UNITY in Diversity. renebarreto Goanworld : http://worldgoan.blogspot.com/ WORLD GOA DAY 20.8.2010 WORLD KONKANI DAY WORLD ALLIANCE OF GOAN ASSOCIATIONS ==
