Re: [Goanet] Lion Roars -Wine and Dine

2010-08-02 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

Lionel,

Kudos to you for these reports exposing the criminal waste of public resources.

Notice that the usual suspects who are otherwise exercised about trivia have
little
to say about this. You won't find articles and editorials in newspapers
calling
for
an investigation of this massive fraud.

Two years ago when Soter & I hosted the Goa People's Assembly at Hotel Mandovi
-
funded entirely by private money (moi and Dr. Anil Desai) - the usual suspects
got
chirping about how it was inappropriate to hold a people's meeting in good,
clean
surroundings. The editor of Herald hiding behind "Tomcat" wondered how a
people's
forum could be hosted in a comfortable air-conditioned ambience. He wrote:

"Well, the first thing that seems a little out of place is the venue.
 Since when did the
city’s finest hotel become the place to knit together a ‘people’s assembly’?"

Follow this link to this charlatan's piddle -

http://www.parrikar.org/misc/Tomcat.pdf

But Tomcat had nothing to say on the lakhs spent by the crooks living it up at
taxpayer
expense, when it continues to be reported in his own paper to this day.
Really,
you can't
make this up. The best he can do is this wink-wink dribble under a pseudonym.

No doubt the Herald editor would have preferred the ordinary Goan to revel
in dust,
grime, and urine smell served at Menezes Braganza Hall. The ordinary citizen
assembling
at Hotel Mandovi for a meet funded entirely with private resources - not okay.
 Comfort, A/C
and the ordinary guy don't go together, no sir.

Politicians living it up in large-scale 5-star luxury at people's expense -
just
fine.

It wasn't only the Herald editor. There were also the usual malcontents among
'hacktivists.'
It is a rotten stinking swamp, the Goa of today.

Regards,

r

[Goanet] All Religions for Human Integral Development

2010-08-02 Thread U. G. Barad

Fr. Ivo wide Message: 7, dated: Thu, 29 Jul 2010 writes:" Dear
Dr.U.G.Barad,There is no need to be so pessimistic. Scandals have always
been in the world. Jesus says: "Woe to the world because of its stumbling
blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man
through whom the stumbling block comes!" (NARB, Mt 18:7)). The Church is not
going to fall because of those scandals. Christianity cannot be judged by
those scandals. We live in a time in which media can give us a distorted
image of the real reality. Also money is involved in this issue. Where there
is money, there is devil's workshop.

"The love of money is the root of all evil" (1 Tim 6:10). My answer to you
was in terms of the Hindu reformers and wisemen. It is a difficult situation
for our beloved and great Pope Benedict XVI. There is a need to analyse the
whole situation: the sexual revolution, the media hype, the economic power,
the political gimmicks... I did not speak about our problems of today. India
has to shine in the future, therefore we need introspection and hard work.

.Why should India not shine if there are "gay scandals" in America?
India has its problems, some of them are rooted in the culture, others in
the religion itself. All of us need a cosntant renewal..."

My response: Fr. Ivo your concluding lines are more striking than any of
your previous submissions. This line clearly implies that "gal scandals" of
American clergy in no way affects churches and christianity in India. Why?

Don't you follow the decisions and directives issued by Vatican which is
miles away from India? You follow Vatican because all churches round the
glob are part and parcel of Vatican and therefore any incidences taking
place in any church has direct implications on all other churches.

Secondly, from your above line, one can easily arrive at conclusion that
"gay scandals" of clergy in other parts of India also does not affect
churches and christianity in Goa. And the very same logic if extended little
further goes to imply that "gay scandals" of clergy in any part of Goa will
not affect churches and christianity in Margao. Well said Fr. Ivo .. Keep
your logic flying high...so that at least Margao will fly high . if not
India.

Best regards,

U. G. Barad

[Goanet] Paintings in controversy: Director Xavier Centre of Historical Research speaks to GT

2010-08-02 Thread Sandeep Heble
Fr Delio Mendonca, Director Xavier Centre of Historical Research
Source: Courtesy Gomantak Times August 3, 2010.

Dr Jose Pereira’s exhibition titled ‘Epiphanies of Hindu Gods’ was
inaugurated on July 24. Sixteen Paintings were put up on display ath
the Exhibition and also on display at the Institute were Christian
Paintings.

A few days after the Exhibition a group of people belonging to the
HJS(Hindu Janajagruti Samiti) came with a letter with the subject
stating that the religious sentiments of the people have been hurt.

They requested us to remove three Paintings namely Shiva Seductive
Beggar, Shiva Dance Connoisseur and Krishna in Body of Eros. The same
day they filed a complaint with the Police. The Police Inspector came
over. We told him we didn’t want to give a communal tone to the
Exhibition and didn’t want any confrontation so we withdrew the
Paintings.

Then another group of people came from the same organization with the
same letter this time asking us to withdraw five more Paintings. Since
the History Hour was in session, Dr Jose Pereira was giving a
presentation on Folk Plays of Salcete. He then addressed the members
of the HJS. The next day two people came from the same group, asking
me when I was shutting down the entire exhibition.

We received a few threats saying that what happened in Kerala
recently, (A Catholic Professor’s hand was cut off for blasphemy)
would happen to us. We received numerous calls with people hurling
abuses at us. Our Phone number and email addresses were made available
on the website of the HJS. Almost all the calls and emails weren’t in
proper English. Dr Pereira was concerned but remained calm. His
Paintings were exhibited in Delhi but there was no problem there. We
withdrew the Exhibition on July 31.

Re: [Goanet] Jose Pereira at XCHR: A Recounting of Events

2010-08-02 Thread Santosh Helekar
Prof. Augusto Pinto is nicely demonstrating the cheap political campaigning
tactics that I had mentioned in this thread - tactics of smearing, linking with
devilish political opponents, terrorist organizations, murderers, etc. The
following quote of the professor has everything he accuses me of and more -
twisting of words, spin-doctoring, verbal abuse and insults:

QUOTE
I am sure the Sanatanists will be very grateful to Santosh Helekar for
diverting attention away from this terrorist organisation and the irony of it
is that he has accused FN - who was instrumental in pointing out to their
perfidy - of being the aggressor!!
UNQUOTE
.Prof. Augusto Pinto

An utter lack of self-reflection is also evident. This is the malady that
afflicts people who are driven by an unbalanced view of the world centered
around recycled ideologies and visceral identities, rather than independent
rational thought.

Do you think these people will ever succeed in doing anything constructive for
the secular cause? I don't. They will continue fighting their petty political
battles, cherry picking which murderers to shill for and which murderers to
attack based on their prearranged ideological agenda. The same holds true for
whom they abuse in public forums. Do you think Prof. Augusto or Admin Noronha
will confront, speak out against or abuse AF for the following post?

QUOTE
when I first read of Mr. Pereira, the supposed
intellect-turned-painter-turned-grumpy old man, i opined that he was just a
self-taught wannabe great. Now, I read that he has painted Christ in the nude (
and the Hindus get angry that he has painted their Deities in the nude, too), I
wonder where and how did he ever imagine where in the Bible there was any
reference to a naked Christ. This man claims he has done research on nude
Deities before formulating his drawings. I say he just wants to rile up the
locals, from his self-exiled foreign perch. Shame on Mr. Pereira!

Dear Valmiki, This is from *Profiles of Eminent People of Saligao* by
C. Hubert de Souza, published sometimes int he 1970s. -- FN

Cincinatus Fabian D’Abreu (An Administrator of Outstanding Ability of Sind)

THE life of Cincinatus Fabian D’Abreu of Abreuwaddo, Arrarim reads
like a romance in its wonderful achievements, in the province of Sind
– now a province of Pakistan. He was born in Goa in 1862, the son of
Manuel D’Abreu who had first set foot in Sind in 1846, three years
after the conquest of that province by the British.

The famous British General Sir Charles Napier who conquered Sind, sent
the following terse telegram to the Viceroy “Peccavi” – I have sinned.
Cincinatus started his education at St. Patrick’s High School,
Karachi, the nursery of many famous Goans, who earned both Indian and
International fame in civil and ecclesciastic administration,
including India’s first Cardinal, Valerian Gracias.

He had however to discontinue his education at the age of 16, and seek
for employment to earn his livelihood due to the unfortunate death of
his father. He was first employed by the Civil and Military Gazette
Press as a clerk and later joined the well known English business
establishment of Messrs. Forbes, Forbes and Campbell, dabbling in the
Import-Exchange business.

It was here that Cincinatus acquired extensive knowledge of business
practice, which was to serve him in good stead in later life. In 1889
at the age of 27 he joined the Sind Commissioner’s office as an
ordinary clerk and by his intelligence and high ability which was
recognized by his superiors, received quick promotion. In 1895 he was
promoted to the exalted position of Assistant Commissioner of Sind and
soon after that to the Collector of Sukkur at which post he was
responsible for the design of a waterworks system for Karachi.

In 1897 he was Asst. Collector of Customs of Salt and Excise - a post
of great responsibility – and in quick succession held the post of
Deputy Shipping Master of Karachi and then Collector of Customs,
Karachi, an important post in those days for the growing port of
Karachi. He retired from service from that post in 1917, after a
brilliant service of 28 years, but not to a life of ease and comfort
which he richly deserved, but to work in other spheres of life.

He then found the progressive India Flour Mill Ltd. And the Indian
Life Assurance Co. and himself mastered the intricate actuarial
science to promote these companies on the right lines. He was at this
age elected as a Councillor to the Karachi Muncipality and in 1926 he
became the Vice President. For his outstanding ability he was elected
by popular vote as one of the 12 Leaders of Sind and did yeoman
service for the Sind Province in the Sind League of Progress.

Mr. Cincinatus Abreu then became a director of the Karachi Electric
Supply Corporation and one of the creators of the then modern Karachi.
He was simultaneously the Vice President of the Sind Land Owner’s
Association and during this period helped to acquire land and founded
the famous “Cincinatus Township” where a number of our Goans have
their own houses and properties to-day, In order to knit the Goans
together he helped also to found the Karachi Goan Association.

He died young in 1929, worn out by his labours for the people of Goa
and Sind. He was loved and respected by the people of all communities
of Sind and as reported by the London Times, the members of his
community paid grateful homage to him, by carrying his coffin in
relays from the Church to the Cemetary.

Owing to Cincinatus Abreu, a number of people from Saligao
subsequently migrated to Sind which was then a part of Bombay Province
and settled at Karachi and have done well in life for themselves in
that country like the Vazes of Donvaddo, DeMellos and Sequeiras of
Sonarbatt and Sequeiravaddo and the Saldanhas of De Mello Vaddo etc.

Cincinatus' father Manuel D’Abreu could be considered one of the
Saligao pioneers of Sind who opened that country for later batches of
our village people as well as the people of other villages.

[There seem to be quite a few other links to Cincinatus Township via
Google too. --FN]

Goa blast: absconding Sanatan member arrested
PTI

Maharashtra ATS Chief Rakesh Maria announces the arrest of Prashant
Juvekar, a Sanatan Sanstha member who is an accused in the Margao
blast case, at a press conference in Mumbai on Monday.

An absconding member of right-wing Hindu organisation Sanatan Sanstha
has been arrested by Maharashtra ATS for his alleged role in the 2009
Goa blast - the sixth person to be held in the case.

An ATS team laid a trap and arrested Prashant Juvekar, absconding
since October 16 last year, from near Bhusawal railway station in
Jalgaon district on July 31, state ATS chief Rakesh Maria said.

Juvekar, 24, hailing from Ratnagiri, was produced before a Nashik
court which remanded him in police custody till August 3.

A 7.65 mm pistol was recovered from Juvekar, who was actively involved
in the conspiracy and was trained in making IEDs, detonators and
timing devises, Maria said.

The blast, which had claimed two lives, occurred on Diwali-eve in a
busy thoroughfare in Margao, barely a few hundred metres from a place
where Chief Minister Digamber Kamat was participating in some
celebrations.

The National Investigating Agency (NIA), probing the case, had filed a
charge sheet against 11 Sanatan Sanstha members and made five arrests
before nabbing Juvekar. Those named in the charge sheet include
Malgonda Patil and Yogesh Naik, who were killed when the bomb went
off.

According to the ATS, Juvekar had met Patil on August 23 when duo went
to some place where the former was trained in making explosives. They
had also discussed the blast conspiracy.

“Juvekar was trained for three days in making explosives. On an
experimental basis, the duo even exploded a small IED in hill area
near Naik’s residence,” Maria said.

Since the blast, Juvekar frequently changed his location to evade
arrest, he said, adding the accused stayed in suburban Malad here for
sometime at his maternal uncle’s place and travelled to various places
including Baroda, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Delhi, Varanasi and
Bihar.

Juvekar, graduated in Commerce stream and discontinued his law course.
His mother and father are retired bank employees.

Maria said the NIA has been informed about Juvekar’s arrest and the
agency was likely to seek his custody soon.

The other five arrested are Vinay Talekar, Vinayak Patil, Dhananjay
Ashtekar, Dilip Mangaonkar and Prashant Ashtekar. The absconding
accused in the case are Sarang Akolkar, Jayaprakash alias Anna, Rudra
Patil.

First of all, I am all for members of civil society raising their voices to
condemn the forces of fanaticism. It is just that in this particular instance
I find 'hypocrititis' overriding 'sentihurtitis.'

To be sure, "strong action" must be taken against anyone threatening citizens
and disrupting public order. That's why we have the police dept and other
law enforcement authorities. Why does Kerkar want the CM to intervene
in what should be a routine law enforcement matter?

On which planet has Kerkar spent the past 3 years? Appealing to Digambar
Kamat, the fellow who found a way to get around a Supreme Court order, who
presides over numerous cases of fraud and scam, who runs the most
corrupt administration in Goan history, and who has done incalculable long-term
damage to the interests of Goa and Goans? You are asking the very man
who should be a subject of investigation to "take strong action"? Boy, Kerkar
does have a sense of humour.

Kerkar-bab, why don't you ask Digu to abolish the Arts & Culture Dept?
As you surely know, it has turned into Digu's private prasad distribution
agency to reward friends, family - and yes, critics - at state expense. A
couple of lakhs here, 5 lakhs there. Nice, if you can get in on the gravy
train.

By the way, about that photo in the newspaper the other day, with you
beaming alongside Digu and Sonia-ji. Has your nose recovered its
colour yet?

Dear AF,
At least consider signing your pieces with a name.

Why would you opine; on what basis about? If you are in Goa, then meet Prof
Jose Pereira. When you say "the
supposed intellect-turned-painter-turned-grumpy old man, I opined that he
was just a self-taught wannabe great." is it with a straight face? Just the
last part, do you not think it is possible to be self-taught. There are many
around. many, many!

If you are genuinely aggrieved for our Hindus and for Christians, or scared
for your life as a Christian and the chances of Christans being attacked,
avoid the ridicule (WE have a lot of that here from all comers). It is not a
joke to do and be what Jose Pereira is. Unless you have an in-channel and
are very aware of matters pertaining to scholarship, or nature if the
material including often passed over material pertianing to anything
Baroque. Having said that all scholars are not equal, and some are more
complex and have to be regarded in their totality---but let those
who embrace him, embrace him. The concerns, surprise, fears and still fresh.
Wait a bit, polish your thoughts and then put them out.

Btw this is not a controversy. Its just that people are embarrassed and
scared shit less. Are you?

Do you know what a beating is? Have you ever received one? Even as a child
where you ever beaten ; were you ever stripped, etc. and thrashed? Did you
have putchyapari misang' applied to your penis? Where you ever thrashed in
other settings? Have you seen a man die of beating? Have you witnessed the
last breath go out of a man, on the last hit delivered? Christian? God?
Clothing? Nude? Naked?

Lets not get technical, and LITERAL?? Is it remotely possible, considering
that we have a sense of what punishment is in general, and in those
times--the concepts of SHAMING, that Christ when he was whacked, hammered
and tortured; that he was necessarily allowed to have a cloth/cloak covering
his privates. OR perhaps is one thinking that GOD THE FATHER (ABBA) made
sure his Son would NOT suffer any insult and made sure to put it into the
minds of the torturers not to uncloak the Son of Man, The point is that he
was beaten as a man, and that is the ignominy, but we literally. How about
when he was hung? Do you think one would look pretty? Again God intervening?

SERIOUSLY Bro, where are you headed? It is true that one must be concerned
since for a few more years such matters will be used as political fodder.
Once enough mileage is accrued, they will stop as we can see it happening in
other parts of the country.

[Goanet] Goa to strengthen ties with diaspora

2010-08-02 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Goa to strengthen ties with diaspora

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IANS) Goa is following in the footsteps of Kerala to
engage with its non-residents who make up at least one-third of the
state's 1.5 million population and contribute substantially to the
Goan economy.

Eduardo Faleiro, Goa commissioner for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who
is the man behind the efforts, hopes the efforts will best serve the
interests of the state.

Faleiro said he is happy with the "positive" response from
Non-Resident Goans (NRGs) to the work and study his office has done
and for the cooperation from the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs
(MOIA).

"The response is very positive. And what the MOIA is doing for the
diaspora and NRIs is a matter to be appreciated, the way they have
reached out and how it is well received," Faleiro, a former union
minister, told IANS during a visit to the capital.

His office will interact with overseas Goans on a sustained basis to
identify areas of mutual concern, address the needs of Goans overseas
by providing an institutional platform and formulating appropriate
policies and also strengthen the bond between Goa and the overseas
Goans by recognising their achievements.

The Goa Commissioner's office has issued 500 Goa Cards to Goan
expatriates across the world in two years on request and payment of
Rs.250. The Goa card holders will get faster and better attention from
government departments and offices.

Goa is also the second state after Kerala to have conducted a
scientific migration study to understand and deal with irregular
migration and exploitation of NRGs.

A Goa scholarship programme for diaspora children is formulated by the
commissioner's office for the benefit of the wards of Persons of
Indian Origin (PIO), Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and NRGs.

The commissioner's office has also initiated the Know Goa Programme to
acquaint youth of the Goan diaspora with the state and its culture.

On Faleiro's request, the Indian government has delegated powers to
the state for authentication of educational certificates from Goan
academic institutions.

Rajendra has made a very important point that Goannetters though are all firmly
on the side of Goa,

they seem to be involved in fighting with each other rather than taking a
collective stand against our

common enemies. I also endorse what Edwin-Diano Pinto wrote.

It is this trend that must be making politicians and other destroyers of Goa
happy and

laughing to see that there appears to be no unity as we are wasting precious
time attacking

each other. We should be collectively doing are bit fighting against the
destroyers of Goa.

Some criticize just for the sake of criticism and not constructive criticism.

True we all have differences of opinion but at the end of the day it should
not be personal

criticism and we should accept construtive criticism sportingly and accept the
majority opinion.

As Rajendra rightly says, let us not give a chance to our enemies to be
victorious at the

end seeing all this divide and rule. Let each Goan contribute positively no
matter how small or

little he can to save Goa from being ruined.

Best wishes, Dev borem korum.

Santosh Helekar wrote: "I do not agree with Rajan that Admin Noronha

I would like to congratulate Dr. Santosh Helekar on his ability to
twist arguments, ideas and words in such a way that others are put
completely on the defensive. This spin-doctor-ability is an absolute
marvel to me.

Look at the issue at hand. The subject is: Re: Jose Pereira at XCHR: A
Recounting of Events. I had originally raised this issue to point to
the perfidy of the Hindu Janajagriti Samiti who had through an allied
organisation - the Sanatan Saunstha - put out hate propaganda through
its newspaper the Sanatan Prabhat, and had published the phone numbers
of the Xavier Centre for Historical Research which led to a spate of
hate calls to the XCHR, wherein the 79 year old Dr. Jose Pereira was
even threatened of being decapitated.

At the XCHR talk by Dr. Jose Pereira, where the activists of the HJS
intruded to lecture him about their "hurt sentiments" Frederick
Noronha pointed out to them their perfidious act of publishing the
phone numbers of the XCHR and suggesting to their misguided readers
that they make threatening phone calls to the XCHR.

Santosh Helekar used this point to hijack the subject of Jose Pereira
at XCHR: A Recounting of Events - to turn it into a diatribe against
FN. The fact that an old scholar, artist and philosopher has been
issued death threats has been drowned out in the meanwhile.

Remember, the Sanatan Saunstha is the organisation which wanted to
explode bombs on Narkasur day last year. The fact that they failed and
killed two of their own members is a different issue.

I am sure the Sanatanists will be very grateful to Santosh Helekar for
diverting attention away from this terrorist organisation and the
irony of it is that he has accused FN - who was instrumental in
pointing out to their perfidy - of being the aggressor!!

I wish to congratulate Santosh Helekar on his excellent rhetorical skills.

Re: [Goanet] Jose Pereira at XCHR: A Recounting of Events

2010-08-02 Thread Santosh Helekar
I would request Sam Furtado to retract the statements he has made against me
below. I have never made the assertion that he has falsely quoted as my own. My
position on Dr. Jose Pereira's paintings is exactly what it has been all along
with other artistic and academic freedom issues such as those related to
Hussain, Dan Brown and Da Vinci code movie, Salman Rushdie and Subodh Kerkar. I
am unconditionally in favor of artistic and academic freedom, and am opposed to
anybody who uses violence and intimidation to stifle it. Groups such as Hindu
Janajagruti Samiti, inappropriately named Catholic Secular Forum, Islamic
Defense Council, etc stand for everything that I am against. But I have no
problem as long as they express their protests in a peaceful manner, as the
lady in the video was doing.

Cheers,

Santosh

Re: [Goanet] CONTROVERSY: The Jose Pereira paintings...

2010-08-02 Thread AF
when I first read of Mr. Pereira, the supposed
intellect-turned-painter-turned-grumpy old man, i opined that he was
just a self-taught wannabe great. Now, I read that he has painted Christ
in the nude ( and the Hindus get angry that he has painted their Deities
in the nude, too), I wonder where and how did he ever imagine where in
the Bible there was any reference to a naked Christ. This man claims he
has done research on nude Deities before formulating his drawings. I say
he just wants to rile up the locals, from his self-exiled foreign perch.
Shame on Mr. Pereira!

5 THEOLOGY OF THE BODY PIONEERS AWARDED

Indian Couple, Daughters of St. Paul Honored

By Genevieve Pollock

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania, JULY 30, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Five individuals
and institutions were honored for their work to spread the teaching of
Pope John Paul II in his theology of the body at the first national
congress on this topic.

Cardinal Justin Rigali, archbishop of Philadelphia, said the opening
prayer for the Thursday evening awards banquet at the National Theology
of the Body Congress.

Cardinal Rigali affirmed to ZENIT that the theology of the body is "a
great gift." In fact, the cardinal personally wrote a Jan. 21 letter of
invitation to the congress, in which he stated, "I am convinced that
John Paul II's theology of the body is a treasure for the Church and a
gift of the Holy Spirit for our time."

The three-day congress, which was organized by the Philadelphia-based
Theology of the Body Institute, ends today.

The institute awarded Valentine and Ann Coelho of Goa, India; Father
Richard Hogan of Crystal, Minnesota; the Daughters of St. Paul of
Boston, Massachusetts; the Theology of the Body International Alliance
of San Antonio, Texas; and Ruah Woods of Cincinnati, Ohio.

A press release noted the "pioneering work" of these honorees in "the
advancement of the teachings of Pope John Paul II on human sexuality."

David Savage, chairman of the institute's board, said at the banquet
that "each of the recipients have been true trailblazers -- in ways
unique to their individual and organizational missions -- in promoting
and helping others understand the theology of the body."

Unique missions

Valentine and Ann Coelho were acknowledged for their work over the past
decade in spreading the teachings of John Paul II in India, through
seminars for clergy, religious, seminarians, doctors, youth and engaged
and married couples.

[Goanet] TIMES of INDIA & BOLLYWOOD & SANGH PARIVAR........

2010-08-02 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

In reference to post by James Fernandes, Mumbai; on TOI
Cartoon,’The Lost Supper’.

COMMENT: Who said the cartoon depicted Christ and Disciples?
Has anyone seen Christ or His disciples? Or does someone have any photograph of
any of them. Tomorrow if someone draws a cartoon with a ‘dove’, will you object
that they are poking fun at the ‘Holy Spirit’? Or did you object when a poilet
soap named ‘DOVE’ came to market?

A person without a broad mind and a broad outlook in life
can easily turn into a fanatic. He just needs to be wound and he becomes
impulsive. These will calm down once rationality is shown. But the illiterates
are moulded into fanatism by another who has sinister motives, and no
rationality
can bring a change here. Catholics are depicted as drunkards in Bollywood
films, and why not? The Mumbai Catholics around Dhobitalao were well known for
brewing concoctions for the locals. Bollywood directors of 1970s and later
remember
that, and it does not depict Catholics in general but Dhobitalao Catholics. So
I do not feel anyone should make issue out of things that can be ignored.
Generally non-catholic boozards who come to Goa from India get boisterous after
a few drinks unlike the Mumbai Catholics who turn comedians, and directors need
to depict comedy rather than a fracas scenes.

[Goanet] TAG: Workshop on Duets/Trios/Quartets

2010-08-02 Thread Tiatr Academy Goa

Workshop on Duets/Trios/Quartets

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) in collaboration with Kala Academy, Goa will
organise a workshop on ‘Kantaram’ particularly Duets/Trios/Quartets.
‘Kantaram’ are an integral part of Goan Tiatr and the variety in
‘Kantaram’ i.e. Duets/Trios/Quartets form the unique characteristics of
Tiatr.

Tiatr Academy of Goa and Kala Academy have observed that the
Duets/Trios/Quartets sung on the tiatr stage are not as per the
Duets/Trios/Quartets sung by the tiatr artistes of yester years. Tiatr
Academy of Goa and Kala Academy intend to preserve the nature of
Duets/Trios/Quartets as composed and sung by the lyricists and singers
of tiatr stage in the past.

This workshop will be held on Sunday, 8th August 2010 from 10 am to 1 pm
at the Black Box, Kala Academy, Goa. All tiatr artistes particularly the
lyricists and singers are requested to attend the workshop. The artistes
are requested to confirm their participation on phone nos.

Re: [Goanet] All Religions for Human Integral Development

2010-08-02 Thread Santosh Helekar
Five observations regarding Gilbert's latest material are:

1. He failed to keep his promise not to write again in this thread.

2. He continues to engage in personal attacks against me violating Goanet
rules, while boorishly claiming that I did so.

3. He has some silly problems with the definition of cure provided by the U. S.
National Cancer Institute, and blames me for them. Perhaps, he also believes
that all the cancer experts of the world are not as smart and knowledgeable as
him.

4. He believes haughtily and foolishly that Goanetters love what he writes,
that he speaks on behalf of all Goanetters, and that his garbled writings on
Goanet on the inquisition, Tipu Sultan, etc. are all his original discoveries.

5. As I had predicted, he was unable to add anything substantive, or perhaps,
even understand, the quantitative definition of cancer cure that I had provided
through a link to an earlier post of mine. Here is that definition again:

QUOTE
From the scientific standpoint, a complete cure is deemed to have occurred if a
cancer patient has:

a) Survived after treatment without cancer recurrence for a period that exceeds
the plateau phase (the point at which the falling survival curve becomes
parallel to the x axis) of his/her cancer’s survival curve, and

b) Has achieved a normal life free of cancer, wherein the probabilities of
dying from it, as well as of attaining the average life expectancy, are the
same as that of any normal person who has never had cancer.

[Goanet] Calangute Regional Plan

2010-08-02 Thread Anthony Menezes

Calangute Gram Sabha
demand scrapping of Regional Plan 2021

·  Huge tracts of fields in front of Calangute Church
declared as settlement

·  Massive area of prime coastal land within 200 meters
High Tide line declared as Industrial Estate

·  Major irregularities exposed

The
Calangute  Gram Sabha held recently
vociferously decried the Village Panchayat’s attempts to further concretise
whatever little green area is left of this once beautiful village, and  warned
of serious consequences on the already
fragile eco-system which has already bared the brunt of overdevelopment being
the premier tourist destination of the State.

The
people of Calangute have opposed the Regional Plan 2021 for the village
submitted to the Town and Country Planning at the Gram Sabha, demanding that
the plan be scrapped as procedures were not followed. The Gram Sabha also
charged that the zones of properties of only vested interest were sought to be
changed.

Anthony
Menezes, President of Calangute United, an NGO spearheading a movement to stem
the rot that is plaguing Calangute Village, led a tirade against the panchayat
at
the Gram Sabha with the full support and backing of the people who had gathered
in large numbers.

The
final Regional Plan was never placed before the Gram Sabha for final approval.
Menezes pointed that only a special meeting was held on 13th April,
2009 at 3.00 pm vide letter dated VP/Cal P-RP-09-10/ 067 among the Village
Committee of the Regional Plan and its Technical Committee and the plan was
finalized and was hurriedly sent to the Town Country Planning Department the
very next day.

The
Regional Plan was not displayed before the people at the Gram Sabha nor kept
for public viewing for even half an hour, Menezes charged.

The
Panchayat was specially taken to task with regards to the Regional Plan 2021 of
the village, wherein it has come to light that huge tracts of paddy fields
under survey nos.  7, 437, 436 in front
of the St Alex, Calangute Church, on either side of the CHOG-M road and along
side of the road leading to Nagoa have been declared as settlement zones.

The
people warned the panchayat, that if the fields in front of their church were
converted to settlement, it would have to face the brunt and the ire of the
people.

Shockingly
Menezes also disclosed that massive areas along the beach have been declared as
areas for major industrial estates which is marked in black ink. Unbelievably
these
prime coastal areas falls  within the 200
meters High Tide line. The huge tracts of land violates the CRZ totally.

Menezes
further exposed the fraudulent means in constituting the Village Committee for
the Regional Plan 2021. When the secretary was asked to read out to the public
the names of members who constituted the Village Committee for RP 2012, it came
to light that changes were made to the Committee with the inclusion of new
names, after Menezes produced a true copy of the original Committee members
which carries the signature of the Calangute Panchayat secretary himself, much
to the shock of the public.  The original
Committee was formed at the Gram Sabha dated 29th  November, 2008,  which is
also recorded in the minutes.

The
Panchayat was also taken to task, by Menezes, who wanted to know why
recommendations of ward wise committee’s of the Village for the Regional Plan
were not considered in the Regional Plan. Instead applications from members of
the Technical Committee found favour, Menezes declared.

Menezes
disclosed that the Technical Committee was formed among certain members of the
Committee.

To
prove his point his pointed out that one property, adjacent to an ecological
sensitive water body, under survey no. 39/4 has been granted settlement from
orchard, belonging to a member of the Technical Committee.

Another
shocking revelation that came to light, is that of a property under survey no.
43/0, has been granted part settlement, despite it coming under Natural Cover
and is covered by thick Forest vegetation situated on the hillock bordering
Saligao village, the last green lung of Calangute.  Surprisingly the Panchayat
has in its noting
favouring the settlement, argued that part of the property is a coconut garden
with hardly 10% slope, while the rest of the property is orchard,  and
therefore okayed part rectification to
settlement. It also noted that accordingly the NDS alignment must be changed.
This property too belongs to another member of the Technical Committee, Menezes
declared.

In
another case which drew laughter one Eknath Nagvekar has applied that 13
properties which fall in the settlement zone and that too not adjacent to each
other, be reverted to the Economic Sensitive Zone.

Menezes
urged Nagvenkar to kindly inform the Gram Sabha where these properties were
situated in Calangute, which Nagvenkar drew a blank, not knowing where these
properties were, much to the surprise of the people. How can one ask for change
of zone of properti

They spent Rs 93,42,544 (see earlier Flying Circus series) flying over a
relatively short period of less than two years. Nobody knows why really or
what was achieved from it, except the flying was primarily to Mumbai and
Delhi, some of it to holiday destinations and pilgrim centres. The Gods must
be desperate, you’d think except your *montris* felt getting you to pay for
their absolution was okay! Next they let their hair down and partied till
the cows came home. Your *montris* of course are nonchalant, showing no
remorse in spending your valuable tax bucks for their politicking,
holidaying, dining and even when they play pilgrims. You can’t even call it
valuable any longer considering the way it’s blown up, in this the latest
example, all of Rs 72,00,144 spent to entertain so-called VIP’s between
April 2008 and February 2010. For your information, the meaning of VIPs in
Goa could be anything from a bunch of sarpanches to officials who came to
the 26th Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championships. I did say sub-junior,
that’s how underused your tax bucks are. Because you probably think your
valuable tax money, ironically called ‘revenue expenditure’ in the lingua
franca of government, is being spent on real development. You could also say
misspent, but the word misspent like the word ‘development’ too has lost its
meaning in Goa. I had almost forgotten, but there was also this little
matter of Rs 29,83,639 that the Protocol Department spent on accommodation
and food for all VIP’s visiting Goa. That’s a neat Rs 1,01,83,783 and
cooking if you add the unpaid bills (explained below).

*Let's Party Officially*

On April 3, 2009 and twice on April 4 Digambar Kamat blew Rs 3,850, Rs 3,850
and Rs 10,135 on tea and snacks supplied by Kebab Corner at his little used
official Altinho residence at what was described as “official meetings”. On
May 26 he threw that aquatic championship bash which cost you Rs 50,000. The
real shall we say beneficiary was Bhingi Caterer, Ponda. The next month, on
June 7, Kamat hosted a dinner for so-called ‘dignitaries’ of the 2nd Marathi
Film Festival, 2009 at the Goa Marriott. Cost: Rs 1,42,832. Let’s take a tea
break here and try and understand the words ‘official’ ‘dignitary’ and
‘host’. In the jargon of government, ‘official’ means all-inclusive or
all-embracing and no questions asked. ‘Dignitary’ well, if I explained that
in writing it would need parental guidance for your reading. ‘Host’, in Goa,
well, at least it does not mean someone who invites and entertains guests
and pays for it. The Goa Marriott was the venue for his next dinner (July
13) in honour of the chairman and members of the 5th Western Region
Consultation. Don’t ask. I haven’t a clue. Cost: Rs 43,705. He dined the
Chief Secretary at the Taj Exotica on July 18 spending Rs 45,437 and hosted
a “budget presentation” dinner at Taj Vivanta on July 24. Cost: Rs 23,285.
For all the talking his ministers and Congress MLA’s did during the 12
working days of the Assembly Session from July 21-August 6, 2009, Kamat
rewarded them with tea and snacks served up by Kebab Corner at a cost of Rs
72,000. He was back to entertaining the next day August 7, throwing a dinner
at Cidade-de-Goa for Narendra Jadhav, member of the Planning Commission.
Cost: Rs 62,357. Tea and snacks for god-knows-who on Independence Day at his
official residence (no, not the Margao home, that’s his unofficial official
residence). Cost to you: Rs 17,000. Provider: Kebab corner.

*Party On*

On August 30, he threw Jairam Ramesh, the Union Minister of State for
Environment and Forest and “others” a party that cost you Rs 1,00,689 at the
Cidade-de-Goa. Obviously! While, I sincerely doubt Jairam Ramesh partook of
the food with the same gusto as the “others”, I wager he was used more as a
scapegoat for the shindig. Unfortunately we don’t get to know who went to
the party but the environment must have been good. On September 1, Kamat
offered his hardworking MLA’s tea and snacks at a Congress Legislature Party
meet at Altinho. Cost: Rs 7,200. Provider: Kebab Corner. He dined Prema
Cariappa, Chairperson, Central Social Welfare Board, Delhi at the Sun &
Sand, Panjim on October 10 that cost Rs 28,153. The chosen one, the
Cidade-de-Goa was again the venue (October 12) for a dinner for the
Secretary, Information & Broadcasting. Cost: Rs 39,852. Then there was
dinner (October 28) for newspaper editors at Hotel Mandovi that cost Rs
19,491 and dinner (November 2) for Justice Swatantar Kumar, Chief Justice,
Bombay High Court at Hotel Vivanta that cost Rs 54,601.

*……And On*

Hotel Vivanta was ‘graced’ again by Kamat and his invitees on November 11,
2009, this time believe it or not, in honour of the Council of Young
Political Leaders who toted up a tab of Rs 1,16,505. Perhaps they were
unaware they were gobbling up your tax bucks. Google says this is an
organization dedicated to promoting diplomacy and mutual understanding

 *Food for thought*

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat spent Rs 22,07,748 entertaining between April
2009-February 2010. It was the turn next of Vishwajeet Rane, the Health
Minister. But above the aroma of food, is a certain rot that could become
like a resident rot (like decaying wood in your window frame) or like the
fragile River Princess that will eventually break into two and become
extinct only when its time is up to go to rack and ruin. Not a day before.
Kind of dust to dust thing. I am talking about seven floating casinos and
the pleasure boats dumping garbage in the Mandovi. In a few days time,
August 4 exactly, the Bombay High Court (the only institution that works in
Goa for the *aam aadmi,* the rest are all *bakwas*) will hear the writ
petition challenging their expulsion from the Mandovi to outer anchorage at
Aguada Bay. It’s funny but the official NOC of six (Pride of Goa, Arabian
Sea King, The Leela, Casino Royale, San Domino, Caravela) expired during
different months in 2009. The NOC of the Boa Sorte expires on August 23,
that’s in three weeks. From this point of view, they are plying their trade
illegally. But as this case could drag on for years, a status quo is perhaps
what the owners want. Because they can use that as a reprieve and it will be
business as usual for all. The government won’t win the case either because
it will go out on a limb to lose it.

Here’s a thought. The insurance policies of six of the casinos expire this
year. The policy on the Pride of Goa expires on May 15, 2011. I dunno, but I
think the government could write to the insurance companies reminding them
of the fact the NOCs have expired, thereby attracting possible legal
implications. It might do to suggest that if passenger safety were
compromised somehow it could lead to an insurance nightmare. It’s worth a
try -- certainly better than all the government duplicity thus far. For the
record, the insurance policy of the Arabian Sea King expires on December 22,
2010, The Leela – November 10, Casino Royale – October 15, San Domino –
August 7, Caravela – December 22, Boa Sorte – November 2. So there.

*You are what you eat*

Rane threw his first bash on May 4, 2009, a lunch for a Health Advisory
Committee catered by Kebab Corner at a cost of Rs 19,350. On June 28 he
dined 40 delegates of Goa Medical College (GMC) meeting at Cidade-de-Goa.
Cost: Rs 64,548. By the way Rane’s fave watering hole is the Cidade-de-Goa,
where he threw another lunch costing Rs 36,995 for participants of a Health
Advisory Council on July 4. Then there was this mother of all meals on
August 2 for doctors of the GMC and DHS that cost you Rs 3,16,939 at
Cidade-de-Goa. The justification, and I quote was “in respect of achievement
and the new initiation of Government of Goa in the health sector.” (Chew on
this too - On September 24, a year earlier he threw a party for 250
delegates attending a seminar on “Strategies for improving livelihood
security of rural poor” on board the Santa Monica. Cost: Rs 3,10,250. Hiring
the vessel cost an extra 25 grand. Food provider: NH 17). The next day, on
August 3 he hosted another lunch for the Health Advisory Committee at NH 17.
Cost: Rs 16,450.

*No free lunch for the aam aadmi*

Compare that with what the *aam aadmi* gets. Remember the damage caused to
famers Bhagwan V. Naik and Sandeep L. Naik of Menkure village in Bicholim
taluka by an elephant a couple of years ago. They each got a compensation of
Rs 200 paid by cheque which must have made them even more distraught. By the
cheque that is, not the paltry sum. Imagine the embarrassment of producing
that to the bank and withdrawing the money a couple of days/ weeks later!
And if you are wondering why I give a 2008 example? It’s only to make a
virtual comparison. A 2010 comparison would be the Mopa land acquisition
rate of Rs 60 per sq. mt that the government is going to give.

*Barking up the wrong tree*

You read about the thousand plus committees the government formed. This
takes the cake. The Forest Department established seven committees between
June 2007 and now. What is really amusing are names like this:
‘Identification of balance area of private forest’; ‘State level expert
committee for identification of critical wildlife habitats’; ‘South Goa
district committee’ – it was formed to identify private forest in South Goa;
‘State Board for Wildlife’; ‘Committee to review/ exam draft working plans
of Forest Department’; ‘Governing body of State CAMPA (Compensatory
Afforestation Management Planning Authority)’; ‘Steering committee of state
CAMPA’; and ‘Executive committee of state CAMPA’. You ask but where’s the
forest? Probably hidden under the forest of committees! The State Board for
Wildlife has 39 members with the usual quota of MLAs (including Anil
Salgaocar, the mine owner - an irony surely considering that it is
excavation of mines that have destroyed forests!) and government babus
(understandably). There’s also a cab owner who I think has a bar at Mo

RELIGIOUS SENTIHURTITIS, A FAIRLY NEW DISEASE NOW BECOMING EPIDEMIC

By Subodh Kerkar
kerkar...@gmail.com

Once again the religious
sentiments of Hindu Janajagriti
Samiti and Sanatan Saunstha are
hurt. This time by some
outstanding paintings of Hindu
Gods created by Dr. Jose
Pereira. The paintings depict
Krishna with naked Gopies, Lord
Shankar dancing with naked
maidens and many other scenes
borrowed from Hindu mythology.
The paintings show great
influence of Indian sculptures.
In fact they are based on
sculptures from Ajanta, Ellora
and other Shaivait rock
carvings.

Dr. Pereira obtained his doctorate for his thesis 'Influence
of Shaivism on rock temples of Deccan and Konkan'. He has
detailed drawings and tracing of each sculpture which
influenced his paintings. The images are not out of his
imagination but based on orthodox Hindu sculptures.

The Samiti members have perhaps not visited Ajanta and
Ellora. Otherwise they would put up a demand that Shiva and
his naked maidens as well as Krishna and his consorts be
dressed up!

Recently some Muslim fanatics in Saudi Arabia cut off breasts
of mannequins in ladies garment stores because they were
partly exposed. If the Hindu Janjagriti Samiti is allowed to
carry on what they are doing, the bare bosoms of Indian
temple sculptures are in great danger!

Before I move on with my arguments, it is relevant
to write a little about Dr. Jose Pereira. He is
one of the most interesting persons I have ever
met. While studying at J. J. School of art he
enrolled himself at Siddhartha College and obtained
his masters in Sanskrit. After his doctorate he
proceeded to Portugal and became a research
assistant at the University to study east west
cultural relations. This brought him to Goa to
study our Mando traditions. He concluded in his
book that Goan Mando is not an imitation of
Portuguese Mando but has its independent existence.
This view was not very palatable to the then
Salazar regime in Portugal. Dr. Pereira had to
leave the country or face arrest.

He proceeded to Benares and became a research scholar at the
Benares Hindu University, studying architecture. From 1960 to
1969 he traveled all over India studying influences of
colonial rule over temple and church architecture. He has
very interesting observations about Indian influences on
churches and western influences on temples.

'Indian Baroque' is the term he coined for the so called
colonial buildings. He then went to New York and taught Hindu
theology at Fordham University.

Dr. Pereira's works are based on solid foundations. He is a
devout catholic, yet has tremendous respect and fascination
for Hindu scriptures. "Do you find conflicts between the two
faiths?", I asked him. "I find that the basic principles of
Hinduism and Christianity are the same", he answered.

"Geeta and Bible both praise compassion and love of God and
hold it superior to the omnipotent and all powerful aspect of
the almighty". And then he quotes a Sanskrit sloka to make
his point. "The phonetics of Sanskrit are based on drums of
Shiva", he chuckles.

He can recite the whole Geeta in Sanskrit and loves doing it.
Dr. Pereira is a great scholar and a humanist. He belongs to
the traditions of Dharmanand Kosambi, Dr. Mashelkar, Dr. Anil
Kakodkar and our own Ravindrabab Kelekar.

And when Xavier Centre of Historical Research exhibited his
works, the religious sentiments of some people were hurt.
The centre withdrew the exhibition supposedly to avoid
causing communal tension. I must point out that in the same
exhibition was exhibited a work by Dr. Pereira showing
crucifixion. His Christ is also completely naked!

"Religious feelings getting hurt", which I call
'Religious Sentihurtitis' is a fairly new disease
which has become endemic in our country. It is far
more dangerous than Chikungunya and Swine flu
because it can actually make us appear like foolish
pigs! This disease has spread amongst all
  religious fanatics, across religions.

Hussein's paintings, my Ganesh drawings and Dr. Pereira's
works caused 'Religious Sentihurtitis' to Janjagriti members.
Rushdie's satanic versus and the Danish cartoon set the
epidemic amongst Muslim fanatics. And the Christian fanatics
caught 'Religious Sentihurtitis' due to the film Da Vinci
Code and recently due to some satirical verses written by a
Benaulim poet criticizing a priest (as if the priests should
be above criticism).

This is a strange disease. When the conditions are prone to
gaining some political advantage, the disease makes its
appearance. The patient actually invites the disease. The
symptoms are quite funny. The patient of 'Religious
Sentihurtitis' presents with beating his breasts. Then he
starts making police complaints against the cause of the
disease. This is foll

I think the depiction of the common man in the center with all those who have

hope and pray that I do not see the day when we have Christian terrorists or
fundamantalists making a mockery of Christ's teachings, as are being done by

[Goanet] The other side – monday muse (2Aug ’10)

MONDAY MUSE (2 August 2010)

THE OTHER SIDE

Once, a wanderer came to the banks of a wide river. He wondered on ways to
cross the broad barrier, but in vain. Just as he was about to turn back, he saw
a Zen master on the other side of the river. He shouted out, ‘Sir, please tell
me how to get to the other side of this river’? The monk promptly yelled back,
‘Young man, you are on the other side’.

Like all Zen stories, this tale too holds multiple lessons. However, let’s
consider it for the aspect of interpersonal skills. The two banks of the river
represent two individual personalities that lie aligned parallel to each other.
The river represents the space between the relationships.

While we seek to travel the journey to the other side, it would be better to
understand that our side too is the other side with regards to the person
across. So getting to the other side necessarily includes connect with
initiative on the side that one stands on. The same concept is articulated with
great simplicity in the quote, ‘if it is to be, it is up to me!’

More often than not, our closest friends are the ones where we take the
initiative for maintaining and empowering the relationship. The onus of
friendship cannot be on the other person. The responsibility lies with me to be
better at doing everything necessary for my friend to see a friend on the other
side… which is where I stand!

to BE BETTER at connecting to the other side
let’s do the needful, on the side that I reside!

- Pravin

Times of India is owned by members from the Jain community this explains why
TOI never publishes any articles that will hurt the sentiments of the jain
community neither TOI publishes any cartoon ridiculing the god of jains i.e.
Mahavira.

Times of India's recent publishing of a Cartoon ridiculing Christ & his
disciples is a DIRECT ASSAULT on the Catholic faith. TOI may have apologized
but the damage has been permanently done. That cartoon will permanently
remain in the public domain and on the world wide web.

1970 onwards Bollywood has been depicting catholics as drunkards and
catholics having low IQ. This has permanently damaged the reputation of
catholics in India.

1998 onwards the Sangh Parivar has also launched a hate campaign against
catholics which is unlikely to end.

The enemy knows that catholics are non-violent, non-aggressive and peaceful
people and will not retaliate due to which expect the enemy to carry on
with their anti-catholic activities.

Re: [Goanet] Gandhi G-Kings (Rajendra Kakodkar)

2010-08-02 Thread Edwin\Diana pinto

Rajendra Kakodkar, you have expressed my sentiments exactly. If we all agree
that we are on the side of Goa, then lets stop squandering our energies on
each other and

together combine our resources in doing something concrete for
our motherland. Because it is our Goa that matters ultimately. Each one of
us Goans has something positive to contribute, but we are losing sight of
our objective and getting distracted by things that don't really matter in
the end. What matters eventually is ensuring that Goa is still available for
our children and grandchildren.Lets take ourselves out of the picture for a
change. As Rajendra has rightly said, please, please lets join hands and
make ourselves stronger. After all, the entire resources of the state
machinery, as also the money and power are all in hands of those we are
trying to save Goa from. What we have are only our talents and skills, but
most important even than this, our unity.

Dear Fredrick and Rajan
?
While it is heartening? see that all goanetters are firmly on the side of
Goa, I am disdained to find that they continue?to?spend most of their time
fighting to decide as to who?is their enemy no.1. The enemy and the enemies
are making merry with divide and rule. Can we all?utilise atleast 50% of our
energies and time to fight?only enemies? Please retrospect. No compulsions.
Lets resolve on the INDEPENDENCE DAY.
?
Rajendra
