This is called 'Consent Manufacturing'. Even agitating groups get
manufactured these days by vested interests. Digu has become an expert at
taking the gullible goans for a joy ride. Flying squads, by-pass and time
pass. He has his mouth piece "Herald' and 'Lokmat' to take care of south
and north for manufacturing opinion. It's the festival of Digu's Ideas.

Folks,

Please forgive me for pointing out Gilbert is wrong again. There are NO GOAN
idle minds and fingers.

See idle minds http://idleminds.comicgenesis.com/

Perhaps like Shylock (Shakespeare) Gilbert feels self-pity, imagining he is a

self-victimization?

2011-02-10 Thread Santosh Helekar
In the peer-reviewed biomedical literature there are two papers reporting
correlations between reduced habitation of house sparrows around cell phone
towers, but no evidence for dying of these birds due to radio frequency
electromagnetic waves emitted by cell phones or towers. There is also no
evidence in the peer-reviewed literature for reduction of bees and bats, nor
any deleterious effects on plants in the wild from these waves. Please note
that bats produce and sense ultrasonic sound waves, not radio frequency
electromagnetic waves. Please let me know if anyone likes to know the
difference between the two.

BTW, radio frequency electromagnetic waves permeate the natural universe in
abundant quantities. They carry miniscule amounts of energy.

[Goanet] Festival of Ideas, Goa

2011-02-10 Thread Luis Vas
Festival of Ideas, Goa
Star-studded line-up for D D Kosambi Festival of Ideas
A compilation

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
Panjim, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat inaugurated the D D Kosambi
Festival of Ideas on Saturday at Kala Academy, Panjim, followed by a
lecture delivered by eminent scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar. This is
the fourth edition of this lecture series, and will be held from
February 5 to 10 at Kala Academy, Panjim.

Other speakers included another great scientist and former President
of India Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, Tibetan leader and Buddhist luminary
His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Indian-born British economist and
intellectual Lord Meghnad Desai, Human Rights activist and former
Judge of South Africa’s Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs and
Rajya Sabha MP, Hindu leader and President of the Indian Council for
Cultural Relations (ICCR) Dr Karan Singh.

A son of Goa, Dr Mashelkar was born on January 1, 1943 in Mashel,
Tiswadi, in a modest family. He went to school barefoot and almost had
to give up studies owing to his family’s strained economic
circumstances. Nevertheless, he was a rank holder in the matriculation
examination.

An apocryphal story says that his school principal and science
teacher, Bhave, once concentrated the rays of the sun through a
magnifying lens on a paper till it burned and told him, “This lens is
you. If you concentrate on your studies, one day you will reach the
sky.” Though his mother could not support his college education, Dr
Mashelkar managed to become a chemical engineer, won a Tata
scholarship, went overseas and got his PhD degree.

He did ground-breaking work in polymer science and engineering, going
on to become the head of the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL). He
was then named Director General of the CSIR. Under his leadership, the
CSIR was first in the World Intellectual Property Organisation’s
(WIPO’s) Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) filings among developing
nations in 2002. CSIR still has a 30-40 per cent share of all US
patents granted to Indians in India during the last three years.
His personal experience of reaching the very top of his profession
from the most dire of circumstances has convinced him that India is
fated to become one of the world’s greatest intellectual and economic
engines. He has been responsible for creating an unprecedented
national awareness in India on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR).

He led the challenge to successfully revoke the US patent on the
wound-healing properties of Turmeric. He also chaired the technical
committee that successfully challenged and revoked US patents on
Basmati Rice. This set in motion a movement for the protection of
traditional knowledge in the entire developing world.

Mashelkar is presently the president of the Global Research Alliance,
a network of publicly funded research and development institutes from
the Asia-Pacific region, South Africa, Europe and the USA with over
60,000 scientists. He is also the President of India’s National
Innovation Foundation.

The Directorate of Art & Culture initiated the D D Kosambi Festival of
Ideas to commemorate the birth centenary of Damodar Dharmanand
Kosambi, Indian mathematician, statistician, physicist, historian and
polymath, and a great son of Goa. This festival is the only one of its
kind in the country.

Goans can make a miracle happen for Goa: Mashelkar
TNN, Feb 6, 2011, 03.05am IST

PANAJI: Eminent scientist of Goan origin Raghunath Mashelkar said that
he feels hugely optimistic about Goa's future given the strong
feelings displayed by its youth towards their homeland. Mashelkar
opened the six-day D D Kosambi Festival of Ideas 2011 with his lecture
'Making Impossible Possible' at the Kala Academy on Saturday to an
auditorium overflowing with an enthusiastic audience.

"I met 350 young Goans recently for the making of the vision document.
And I gave them 10 out of 11 on this one count. For the feeling of 'my
Goa' that I saw in them. It was incredible. I met the chief minister
the next day and I told him that I am dangerously optimistic usually,
but now I am supper optimist for Goa," said the president of the
Global Research Alliance referring to his meeting to gauge the
aspirations of the youth of Goa last month. Mashelkar heads the Goa
Golden Jubilee Council which is to prepare a vision document 2035 for
the state.

Mashelkar, pointing to an article that Goa has the least number of
deaths at birth in the country, said, "This article says that Goa is
the best place to be born in. We can also get a headline saying that
Goa is the best place in the world. When people talk about India being
the third-most powerful country in the world, I also want it to be the
happiest country in the world. And I want the same for Goa, and Goans
can make it happen."

Mashelkar, who has been bestowed with 28 honorary doctorates by
renowned universities throughout the world, elaborated, "Goa will be
the happiest state in 2035 when not just few but every Goan will do

Healer , heal thyself…….an Election Special
By Wilmix Wilson Mazarello

John: He is a “Liar”.

Peter: Who is a “Liar”?

John: Our M.L.A.

Peter: So, what’s new? Did you realize it now?

John: I know. Many people had told me that earlier , but I never
believed them.

Peter: So now you do. What made you change your mind?

John: I worked to get him elected during the last Election. He had
promised me a good “Government- Post”.

Peter: So, you did not get it , right ?

John: For four long years, he went on assuring me that he’ll do it. But
he never did.

Peter: There is still time. May be he’ll still do it.

John: No, he will not.

Peter: Why do you say that?

John: Because, just yesterday he said to me:- “John, you are my best
worker. I feel so bad I was not able to give you that “Government-Post”
I promised you. But, do not worry, you just stand by me in the
forthcoming Election, and I assure you, the first thing I’ll do is your
work. That’s my promise.

Peter: May be he means it.

John: No! I know he does not mean it, because he said the very same
thing to me 4 years ago, when he asked me to work for him .

Peter: So, what are you going to do now ?

John: I gave up my job, to work for him. My family is suffering,
because I am jobless. I had convinced my family, that I’ll be getting a
good “Government -Post”, no sooner he wins.
Now, I’ll work against him in the coming Elections. I’ll teach him a
lesson.

Peter: And, how are you going to work against him?

John: I’ll work for the Candidate, who’ll stand against him.

Peter: And if that other Candidate wins, than you think you’ll get that
“Government-Post “?

John : Yes, why not ?

Peter: And what, will you tell your family, this time? “Just wait for
another 4 years ?”
And, what if that Candidate does not win? What if the same M.L.A wins
again? Have you thought about that?

John : Why do you say that ?

Peter: See John. There is no guarantee of a victory in any Elections.
As of now, you don’t even know who the other Candidate will be, and you
are ready to trust him , to give you a “Government-Post” .
Secondly, if the present M.L.A wins again, he will not only ,not give
you that “Government-Post”, instead he will take revenge against you for
working against him. Do you know that?

John: So, what do you advise me to do?

Peter: Nothing. Just go and find that job you left, or any other job to
support your family.

Politics is not for you. You backed the present M.L.A for “selfish
reasons”, ie. to get yourself a “Government-Post’.
We need Politicians and Political workers who are “selfless” and not
“selfish’ like you.

You are as much a “Liar” as he is, because when you made propaganda for
him, you lied to the voters saying that he will give jobs to the
jobless . Am I right?

In fact at that time, even you never had the people’s good in your mind.
You had only one job in mind, and that is a “Government-Post” for
yourself.

John: What are you saying?

John: I am saying that the ‘curse’ of the people is as much on you , as
on the M.L.A. So before you call him a “liar”, first change yourself.
Healer, heal thyself.

Methinks you are frozen in time in a backwater of Montreal, which
makes you foist upon 2011, what must have been a racial slur in the
1960s. Now, there are so many "Goichis" in Mississauga and Scarborough
(some of whom fled from Montreal while you remained) that the
so-called Pakis are by far the largest community.

If they have "peroxided" their hair blond it is because they have
displaced the real blondes. Only this time, the blonds are not dumb.
And I have no doubt you would turn green with the net-worth of most of
these "Pakis".

Now tell me before you say the word bigot again, have you read the
entire Tehelka article as opposed to just looking at the photographs
and what have you concluded from it.

I was waiting with bated breath to find out what Part 3 of "Regurgitating Goa's
History" would reveal. Now that it is here I am relieved (no pun intended in
the context of spoon feeding and regurgitation).

I notice that in this part Gilbert asks us to read humor in it. He also asks
some questions. But I feel bad for him because from past experience I know that
nobody will bother to answer his questions. Instead, some of us will laugh so
hard at his humor that we will fall off our chair and let our jaw drop to the
floor. Recognizing this fact, I would like to request genuine Goan historians
to make a serious effort to answer his questions for a change. But I notice
that they cannot do that until they understand exactly the context,
perspective, conflicts of interest and expertise in Goan history that lead
Gilbert to ask his questions. I would therefore like to ask him for some
clarifications about the statements he has made in this regard.

1. Where has he published his retrospective analysis of some repeatedly
reported facts of Goan history? In which book or publication of his can one
read it? (please don't read humor in this)

2. What are the titles of the books or sources on Goan history from which he
has derived his knowledge and expertise on this subject? (no humor intended)

2. Why does he want us to read humor into the fact that he has risen to some
state in life? What state in life has he risen to? (no humor intended)

Cheers,

Santosh

This is called 'Consent Manufacturing'. Even agitating groups get
manufactured these days by vested interests. Digu has become an expert at
taking the gullible goans for a joy ride. Flying squads, by-pass and time
pass. He has his mouth piece "Herald' and 'Lokmat' to take care of south and
north for manufacturing opinion. It's the festival of Digu's Ideas.

2011-02-10 Thread Pandu Lampiao
Just my two bits: there are documented effects of cell fone towers in
North America and the most worrying aside from the effects on humans
is on the bees and birds. They loose their natural instincts and their
bearings.

On human beings in the developed world.where disease is
common.its the food ( gm crops), acceptable rad^ation (smoke
detectors) + unhealthy eating and now mobile fones. Ofcourse, these
issues are always tucked under the carpet and be my guest and guess
why.

Back to the bees and the effects of cel fone signals impact their
navigation and there is a mysterious bee disease about. Whole colonies
have collapsed. So have bat colonies in North Eastern US. A Brit paper
carried a story (this paper always gets things right way ahead of
others) to say global food supply will be severely impacted by
collapse of bee colonies.

Anyways, in Goi where agriculture is almost dead...it ain't
matter. Money under the pillow today is lot better than food tomorrow
is the shallow thinking, We have lost our appetite for our
traditional simple foodxitt-koddi, bakri, tissan, godshem..all
healthy, nutritious and comforting!

Good luck, watch food prices in a few monthsRusia and Aostralia
have suffered with extreme climate.

[Goanet] Words of Wisdom - a father's advice.

2011-02-10 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

A letter
written by a father to his son :

Following is
a letter to his son from a renowned Hong Kong TV broadcaster cum Child
Psychologist. The words are actually applicable to all of us, young or old,
children or parents.!

This applies
to daughters too.

All parents
can use this in their teachings to their children.

Dear son
,

I am writing
this to you because of 3 reasons:

1. Life,
fortune and mishaps are unpredictable, nobody knows how long he lives. Some
words are better said early.

2. I am your
father, and if I don't tell you these, no one else will.

3. What is
written is my own personal bitter experiences that perhaps could save you a lot
of unnecessary heartaches.

Remember the
following as you go through life:

1. Do not
bear grudge towards those who are not good to you. No one has the
responsibility of treating you well, except your mother and I. To those who are
good to you, you have to treasure it and be thankful, and ALSO you have to be
cautious, because, everyone has a motive for every move. When a person is good
to you, it does not mean he really likes you. You have to be careful, don't
hastily regard him as a real friend.

2. No one is
indispensable, nothing in the world that you must possess. Once you understand
this idea, it would be easier for you to go through life when people around you
don't want you anymore, or when you lose what/who you love most.

3. Life is
short. When you waste your life today, tomorrow you would find that life is
leaving you. The earlier you treasure your life, the better you enjoy life.

4. Love is
but a transient feeling, and this feeling would fade with time and with one's
mood.
If your so called loved one leaves you, be patient, time will wash away your
aches and sadness. Don't over exaggerate the beauty and sweetness of love, and
don't over exaggerate the sadness of falling out of love.

5. A lot of
successful people did not receive a good education, that does not mean that you
can be successful by not studying hard! Whatever knowledge you gain is your
weapon in life. One can go from rags to riches, but one has to start from some
rags!

6. I do not
expect you to financially support me when I am old, neither would I financially
support your whole life. My responsibility as a supporter ends when you are
grown up. After that, you decide whether you want to travel in a public
transport or in your limousine, whether rich or poor.

7. You honour
your words, but don't expect others to be so. You can be good to people, but
don't expect people to be good to you. If you don't understand this, you would
end up with unnecessary troubles.

8. I have bought
lotteries for umpteen years, but I never strike any prize. That shows if you
want to be rich, you have to work hard! There is no free lunch!

9. No matter
how much time I have with you, let's treasure the time we have together. We do
not know if we would meet again in our next life.

Re: [Goanet] SUCCESSFUL CURCHOREM AGITATION: CM made give

2011-02-10 Thread Venantius J Pinto
A few thoughts from me.

venantius j pinto

From: rajendra kakodkar
To: goanet@lists.goanet.org
Subject: [Goanet] SUCCESSFUL CURCHOREM AGITATION: CM made give
assurance in writting
Today Curchorem people achieved?results they themselves never expected. CM
was?forced to instruct Collector not to proceed with 4-lane against people's
wishes. People insited on document in writing and CM was forced to do so.
Collector, GP Naik?delivered the letter at?6.45 pm, after which the Fast was
called off.

VJP: Not expecting but yet doing anything is frightening--ie., if that is
the mindset of the leadership and the villagers.Of course commentators and
observers (also participants of course) will/can have their own take. But
good to hear that the "unexpected" happened. Now hopefully they expect to
hold on to what they "won/gained/extracted."
+++
500 people?marched in cars, buses etc from Curchorem (7am)?to Margao
residence of CM.
The date was 9-2-11 and CM also as usual made a 9-2-11.
Police SP, Tony informed CM that the cream of curchorem society had landed
up there and it is unwise to take any hard steps against them.?In fact at
one occasion the aggressive ones in the crowd went out of control and
blocked the main Hari-mandir road and paralysed the traffic. But, Tony's
feedback helped and no untoward thing happened.

VJP: SP Tony should be invited to offer suggestions on orderly agitation and
the role the police can play in facilitating interaction as opposed to other
Police personnel in the mining and other areas. Goans know their names. Use
memory, remember things, people, situations. Good police personnel must be
feted.
++
CM then requested agitators to send 5 people to Panjim. Agitators refused
and insisted that he comes down to Margao. People were annoyed because:
1) CM?ignored the fasting agitators for?8 days, during which two?had to
be?hospitalized.
2) He said he is not the CM of Curchorem but CM of Goa, implying that the
woes Curchorem people are not important to him.
Agitators then started contacting Margao voters and explained why they
should not vote for Digu next time. Madgaokars always been sulking that they
have to face long queues of trucks and dust pollution when they visit
Zambaulim Damubab, the gram-dev of Madgaokars. They never knew who was
responsible? They were informed that these trucks come from mines in which
Digu had interest.
This seems to?have hit?the bull's eye. CM then told the people that he has a
solution and requested a delegation of agitators to come to Panjim, as he
has to leave outstation.

VJP: Good strategists. Not seems: It hit the bulls eye. Bottom line is next
time it will be another bull. Equally dictatorial with one social grace or
one less. Same old same old--as all their advisors, and beneficiaries
too tell them, together contributing to breaking Goan ranks.
+++
Some 10 people went to Panjim, while the crowd sat on the road at Margao.
The crowd also took rally through the Margao town informing about mining
misdeeds/curruption/loot and shouting slogans against the CM.?More than 300
Margao people also joined the rally at this?stage.?
At Panjim, CM tried to dodge the 10 representatives. But?they had answers to
every excuse of his. On two ocassions they showed him documentary evidence
to prove his lies/ignorance.

VJP: Very important to be elegantly merciless. And not look at any
discomfort as a victory. That is childish and observered keenly as a sign of
weak sustaining power.
+++
When made reasonless he?was forced to yield. CM said " if I were a
Curchorcar and not the CM, I would also hurl stones at the trucks". We
brought him back to the topic reminding him that we wanted rational results
and not rhetorics.??

VJP: Good focus. Btw, such rhetoric's are a unique part and parcel of us
Indians. We often say things just to fil th eair, even the most brilliant
ones. Obsequiosness cmes in various shades of being.

Agitators in Margao continued to expose Digu's mining exploits, excesses. To
save the face the CM asked Churchill, Jose Philip and the Collector to meet
us. They too had no words of conviction. When pushed on the back foot,
Churchill played one-up-man-ship?by saying that he wants to go one step
ahead of CM and scrap the 4-Lane in toto.

VJP: So DO IT.
++
This was all possible only because we targetted two things
1) His personal residence (seems his wife dislikes this)
2) His voters (atleast 300 Margao voters made to think)
We now know for certain that he does fear some things.
We can now say that if agitations are genuine and managed professionally and
with precision, the results are EXCELLENT and BEYOND EXPECTATIONS.
Rajendra??
VJP: Marches and processions should always be taken to their homes. One must
consider avoiding making points in print such as --"seems his wife dislikes
it" --simply cause things can get hardened/often do, on account

[Goanet] Emphatic Victories For Aam Aadmi

2011-02-10 Thread Freddy Fernandes
Emphatic Victories For Aam Aadmi

Two very emphatic victories for the Aam Aadmi at last !

After a lot of representations and protests the people of Curchorem have somehow
won their battle for a bypass road exclusively for the heavy mining traffic, two
of the local leaders took upon themselves to go on an indefinite fast in protest
against the proposed four-lane road from Quepem to Sanguem through Curchorem and
in support of the by-pass road for the mining traffic.

It has been a long and hard fight against the financial and muscle power of the
mining fraternity who in cahoots with the politicians and the police were riding
the rough sod over the local people for a long long time, a lot of innocent
people lost their lives too, under the wheels of the mining trucks. Even after
the apathy of our politicians and the authorities to resolve the problems, the
people did not loose hope and continued their fight with courage and conviction
against the erring mining traffic and the pollution they caused. Finally their
efforts bore fruits, as the land acquisition process for the four-lane road has
been halted and the by pass road process has been forced to expedite. Our
government finally yielded to the power of the people.

If it has been the collective efforts of the residents of Curchorem under the
GRM that led to this emphatic victory, in Cuncolim it has been the fight of a
lone ranger, facing the fire from the bigwigs in the Cuncolim Municipality and
the local MLA. One farmer has been fighting tooth and nail to protect his
fields, which sustains his large extended family.

He has gone for courts to courts on this brave journey that ultimately
culminated in him going on an indefinite fast to prove his point, his own
lawyers hand in glove with alleged politicians took him for a jolly good ride
even through the corridors of the supreme court, but he did not give up hope,
for he knew that that his basic constitutional right to live was being violated
by none other than the Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao and the
Cuncolim Municipality he supported.

While elder brother the PWD minister Churchill Alemao has been giving
nightmares, trying to destroy the lives of Goans along the national highways
through it's expansions and people living on river banks by unwanted bridges,
the younger brother Joaquim Alemao has been drawing his guns on poor farmers in
Cuncolim. It looks like the brothers have conspired to irk Goans every which way
they can.

I salute Ajit Parulekar, Paresh Bhende who selflessly went on hunger strike to
support their fight against the mining traffic and the eighty year old Vishnu,
the lone farmer who fought with all he had to save his fields against
overwhelming odds so much so that the urban development minister was made to eat
the humble pie. Here is a person who has a will that has no parallel in Goa. I
hope his acts will encourage others who suffer silently at the hands of
politicians who think they are Gods on earth.

We have two examples, one of a single handed effort, taking on the might and
flak of the powerful politicians and that of a collective effort taking on the
mining mafia and they are both invaluable in their own ways. They have
remarkably established, that if there is a will, there is always a way.

I hope every Goan takes a note of these two remarkable efforts and fight with
courage and conviction to save what's left of our beloved Goa for us and our
posterity.

do our politicians have enough time to indulge in thinking about the welfare of
Goa and Goans ? No, please don't bother answering, the answer is obvious !

Bosco and George have got it all wrong. I have figured out what Gilbert is
trying to tell us in multiple parts. From his prior contributions we should
know that besides discovering accurate cancer and cold remedies, his
grandmother or mauxi knew Goan history more accurately than anyone. What he is
now saying is that she told him those Goan historical kanneo about kings and
queens while spoon feeding him Goan crabs with pez. The spoon feeding was often
followed by regurgitation. Part 3 should reveal what happened after the spoon
feeding and regurgitation. I cannot wait to find out.

Cheers,

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Queen of Jackfruit Recipes ... (Shree Padre)

2011-02-10 Thread Goanet Reader
Queen of Jackfruit Recipes: Geethakka
This housewife can make 300 jackfruit products!

How many recipes can anyone make from world's biggest fruit
-- the jackfruit?

We don't know. But what we can vouch is that Geetha
Narasimha Bhat (46) of Sagar, Karnataka --
Geethakka for her closer circle - can make well
over -- hold your breath -- three hundred!

Born in a GSB (Gowda Saraswath Brahmin) family of Hebri near
Udupi, she grew up eating jackfruit in different ways. Her
mother Sushilabai knew a lot of recipes. GSBs, as a
community, are very fond of jackfruits.

After her marriage to a farming family of Sagar 22 years ago,
Geetha continued this tradition. Though she made many
traditional recipes and many more of her creations, she never
counted the number of recipes she knew until an interesting
incident.

It was about eight years ago. Activists of Krushi Prayoga
Parivara, a local NGO had visited her. Amidst talks, those
youngsters threw a friendly challenge to Geetha. They wanted
to see how many recipes she could do for that day's lunch.

It was ten in the morning. The plantain leaf on which lunch
was served three hours later was full with jack preparations.

One youngster exclaimed: "Geethakka, there are 37 items!"

A team from ETV -- Kannada visited her and shot her
preparing jackfruit recipes for three days
continuously. It was the second time when she was
made to count her recipes -- the number touched
130! The programme that was telecast for two weeks
had demonstrated 45 to 50 recipes.

Leading Kannada weekly, Tharanga asked her to write all
these. She submitted 220 items -- out of which the magazine
chose to publish 110.

Thereafter she started writing all her recipes. She has
already written 250. If you ask Geethakka which one of her
recipes are her favorites, she can't pinpoint any. "Each one
has a different taste", replies she, "It is only jackfruit
that permits you to cook in amazingly diverse ways."

In the jackfruit season that lasts for four months -- March
to June -- very few days pass without the jackfruit cooking.
"If I cut a jackfruit, I make something out of it for
breakfast, 2-3 curries to go with lunch and one more snack
for the evening coffee", she points out. Though she doesn't
count, each year she must be making at least hundred
different items from jackfruit for her family to eat!

Unfortunately, though they are farmers, Geethakka
doesn't have a yielding jackfruit tree till now.
Every year she plants a few, but monkeys and wild
boars destroy it. Now, two plants have grown into
trees, but they are yet to yield.

During the season, her brother brings a few jackfruits from
Hebri. Neighbors present her with another few. "Still, if I
had my own fruits, I would have utilized it more", she says
with some regret.

Her daughter Shobha, now studying in the first year B.Com
also knows almost all these recipes. Shobha does some more
experimentation of hers. All three children -- sons Vinayaka
Bhat and Yogesh Bhat and Shobha -- are fond of jackfruit.
Whenever mother plans to cook something, they too join hands
by helping.

Geethakka has given demonstration of her cooking in a few
Jack Festivals in Sirsi, Thirthahalli etc. There are more
invitations. But due to her family commitments, she is not
able to travel far. Mamatha Bhat, a Sirsi housewife has
learnt to make hundreds of jackfruit products from this
recipe queen.

It would have been a great contribution to the society if
Geethakka's Jackfruit recipes are published in all south
Indian languages and in English. Unfortunately this idea has
not stuck to any publisher or organizations so far!

Re: [Goanet] SUCCESSFUL CURCHOREM AGITATION: CM made give assurance in writting

2011-02-10 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar
To Goanet -

"SUCCESSFUL" ? I guess this means 3 cheers for the "brave" and "courageous"
Digu then? (Ask Oscar Rebelo - he'll tell you a thing or two about Digu's
bravery)

Goans sure know how to set low standards. I mean, here is a case of setting
the bar under ground level, walking over it, and then exulting that you have
attained success.

Let's put this in perspective: Digu is on the team of the miners IN OPPOSITION
to the people of Curchorem on who the miners have rained ruin. Digu makes
a big hoo-ha about not letting the miners shit directly on your home. Instead,
he promises that the miners will shit in your garden. This is hailed as a great
victory by all. Lovely.

ps: Every project Goa's politicians initiate involves land use, land
acquisition,
land conversion, mining, or construction. For how long are Goans going
to tolerate this? Apparently, forever.

[Goanet] Fw: Glorifying colonialism: Ignorance of history or slavish loyalty? Uday Bhembre, Jan 17, 2011, 05.05am IST

2011-02-10 Thread floriano

Editor Sir,

Let me respond to Adv. Bhembre's insinuations and expose him as a communal
mind at work.

1. Adv. Bhembre is one of the main persons to have included 'ONLY IN
DEVANAGIRI' in the Official Language Act.
The word Konkani should have and will have stood all on its own without
this devious communal insertion.

2. Adv. Bhembre says that the Portuguese banned all regional languages in
primary schools and promoted only Portuguese language.
He is blatantly wrong here and his slip is showing. While Konkani was
banned, Marathi flourished with Marathi Xhalas in place everywhere in Goa.
Thanks to the two timing communal individuals like Adv. Uday Bhembre who
preferred to tutor the Portuguese against Konkani. If this was not true,
Uday Bhembre would have acknowledged this fact about Marathi primary schools
flourishing during the Portuguese regime at the cost of Konkani.

3. 'Gaokaries' which later came to be called 'Comunidades' (thanks to the
Portuguese) of Goa existed since prior to the 11th Century. The Portuguese
acknowledged these as best systems of administration for villages and helped
preserve the same by even writing the Code of Comunidades. Who destroyed
them are the people like Adv. Bhembre with the aide of communal Bandodkar
and communal instigator - Janardhan Shinkre who could not see a perfect
system of management and who wanted the corrupt system that was offered by
the neo-colonialist. INDIA.

4. My ancestors are Hindu and I have forgiven the Portuguese for their
religious excesses. This because their model of administration was good and
impartial. I have tasted a sample of it in my childhood. Bhembre and his ilk
have lauded the entry of Indian colonizers into Goa and have taken advantage
of this purely for communal reasons, tolerating the stench of corruption,
which never existed during the Portuguese regime. Put the two
administrations i.e. the Portuguese and Indian side by side and I will want
to vomit on the Indian administrative system which is one hundred per cent
corrupt and malafide. This has made me say that 'WE DO NOT WANT THE
PORTUGUESE BACK, BUT WE WANT THE PORTUGUESE ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEM (RULE)
BACK.

5. A colleague advocate of Uday Bhembre ...Adv. Amrut Kansar is on record to
have publicly said " BANDODKAR IMPORTED HINDU BHATS (READ PRIESTS) FROM
MAHARASHTRA INTO GOA TO POISON THE MINDS OF GOAN HINDUS. This imported
Indian vicious communal poison has corroded Uday Bhembre's brains to the
core for him to write what he has written above.

5. I proudly say that I am a GOAN, not Portuguese, and definitely not
INDIAN. The Indian citizenship was forced on me through Goa's invasion in
1961. If the Portuguese skunks had not signed the co-operation treaty with
Indian invaders in 1974, in the similar manner that they did not sign the
treaty with Indonesia for East Timor, I would have today been fighting for
Goa's independence from India just like Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao aka Jose
Alexandre Gusmao, the 1st President of Independent East Timor. The
Portuguese are the worst of them all. They have been humiliatingly thrown
out of Goa through force. But they chose to come back with their tails
between their legs and without asking GOANS what they had to say about them
signing the treaty with India.

6. My chief ambition in the formation of GOA SU-RAJ PARTY is to use the
democratic set-up that India has promoted in Goa (however vile it may be) to
throw these unwanted and despicable High commands from Delhi, Nagpur and
Maharashtra out of Goa once and for all and along with them Adv. Uday
Bhembre and all other traitors of GOA , the New Delhi's main GOAN
(CONGRESS) chamchas, for sure. If the Independence for Goa is not
possible, then I shall vigorously fight for SPECIAL STATUS for Goa, that
which has been promised by various high ranking 'charlatans' and which is
still a distant dream.

Cheers

Glorifying colonialism: Ignorance of history or slavish loyalty?
Uday Bhembre, Jan 17, 2011, 05.05am IST

I wonder whether it is ignorance of the history of Goa, especially of the
colonial period, or the slavish mentality acquired during the period of
subjugation that leads some Goans to glorify the erstwhile Portuguese regime
in Goa by distorting the truth, attaching to the Portuguese the virtues that
they did not possess and drawing ridiculous conclusions.

It is appalling that any Goan should use adjectives like 'progressive',
'reformist' or 'tolerant' to the Portuguese regime. In the history of the
world, no colonial power was ever motivated by an urge to do good to the
conquered people. Every colonial power exploited the conquered territory and
the people for its own good. The Portuguese regime was no exception to that
rule.

Now for the technical part.

There is a very nice piece on visiting dentists written by S.J
Perelman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._J._Perelman) for the New
Yoorker many years ago.I say read it (if you chance on the
piece) before you call you dentist. And you know my views on the
subject

Now, as for a good dentist..there is oneunfortunately, he
detests/dislikes your community (sadly, that is the communal equation
today). I forget his namehe is from Ponji, his wife teaches in the
dental college. He is excellent. No need of appointment 'cause not too
many folks go to him. He is honest (in his profession), very very
good. He has a practice in Ponji and in the old days, did a couple
of days in Vasco. He is tall, curly hair, eye glasses in his 40s and
lives in Panjim. Maybe someone on the G-net will find his name...his
wife practices as well and reputed to be good. I was his patient and
of all the dentist here and everywhere, he is excellent.

And now for a cure: with all the Con-Con health postings ( **yawn*)
all cut, dried and pastedthe insides of your mouth will thank me.
Go buy yourself a bottle of teel oil (sesame seed oil). Preferably get
the extra virgin, if possible distilled in Sri Lanka. Gargle it each
morning.going forward, you will not be looking for dentists
names/recomendation. To clarify, your old problems will have to be
dealt with the same old way but you don't have new dental problems.
Ah, and don't forget, you own me all-I-can-eat maysoore-pak at Cafe
Central, don't forget!

Now for a dentist story of a late unqualified dentist called Pekan.

You see, Pekan was an assistant to a well appointed and perhaps lazy
Vasco-based dentist. The baatkaar-dentist, as was the practice in the
old days would ask his assistant to do the small jobs. Pekan pick up
the trade..

Very soon, word got around that Pekan was better at fixing the minor
problems with ones teeth than the dentist himself. The customers
poured in from meaty fish mongers to the sly and miserly
baatkars...they all slipped in quietly, never with an appointment
before the clinic opened in the morning or after the dentist took off
in the evening!

Ofcourse, the price was deep discounted, sometimes free if you were
short of cash or 5 fresh mackerels if you were in the business. There
were problems.sometimes, the fix did not go well or the bleeding
did not stop. One never heard of these patients after, one assumes
they suffered in shame or took to alchool.

Then there was this story told over drinks. A Nordic man, in pain and
need of an extraction showed up at the late hour..Pekan seated the
man, the very tall man. Now out part-time dentist being short in
stature climbed on a box to reach the man's problem area, got a grip
on the problem tooth, instrument well in his grip pulled in full
force..the box tilted and fell over, the instrument tight in
Pekan's hands gripping the man's tooth, Pekan hanging in mid
airafter some divine intervention, the man's tooth came loose,
a little red fluid splashed all over..

Pekan has since passed on, his daughter successfully got her degree in
dental medicine and now a practicing dentist.

none on the mainato or modval. In Goa in our golden days (before 61 and even
later) the modval would do the house laundry. Items were mainly bed linen,
towels, pants, dresses etc. Santosh would come to our house twice a month to
collect and deliver. Mode of transport was the famous Raleigh cycle. Clothes
tied in a white cloth would be placed on the rear of the cycle. Before leaving

had to be jotted down and when he returned with the clothes neatly ironed and
washed the 'rol' was repeated to counter check if any items were missing. The
modval would use the local banho to wash clothes which were than strung on a

[Goanet] Successful curchorem agitation - CM made to give assurance in writing

2011-02-10 Thread Camillo Fernandes

Comments : Camilo Fernandes in response to Rajendra's below post :

Kudos to the residents of Curchorem and especially to the leaders who took the
initiative and succeeded in their agitation against the decision of the
Government of 4 lanes. This is very ecouraging news as it proves that
ultimately it is the power of the people which is supreme. It is the
people/voters who can make or break a Government. Politicians once elected
forget all their promises and even when pressurised dont listen to the people's
wishes. Once in power all they are interested in is to amass wealth by any
means fair or foul and ignore the genuine wishes of the people. They forget
that they are accountable to the people. Goans should learn a lesson from
this successful agitation and realize that if they are united and come together
for the common cause, the politicians are forced , to listen and accede to
their demands. Goans should not look only at their individual selfish gains
(like the followers of Churchill Alemao who are adoring & praising him inspite
of all his corruption, and ridiculing others standing against him) but look at
the overall best future of Goa and Goans.

Another important lesson to be learnt is what Rajendra Kakokdar wrote : "
This was all possible only because we targetted two things
1) His personal residence (seems his wife dislikes this)
2) His voters (atleast 300 Margao voters made to think)
We now know for certain that he does fear some things.
We can now say that if agitations are genuine and managed professionally and
with precision, the results are EXCELLENT and BEYOND EXPECTATIONS.

Collector, GP Naik?delivered the letter at?6.45 pm, after which the Fast was
called off.
500 people?marched in cars, buses etc from Curchorem (7am)?to Margao residence
of CM.
The date was 9-2-11 and CM also as usual made a 9-2-11.
Police SP, Tony informed CM that the cream of curchorem society had landed up
there and it is unwise to take any hard steps against them.?In fact at one
occasion the aggressive ones in the crowd went out of control and blocked the
main Hari-mandir road and paralysed the traffic. But, Tony's feedback helped
and no untoward thing happened.
CM then requested agitators to send 5 people to Panjim. Agitators refused and
insisted that he comes down to Margao. People were annoyed because:
1) CM?ignored the fasting agitators for?8 days, during which two?had to
be?hospitalized.
2) He said he is not the CM of Curchorem but CM of Goa, implying that the woes
Curchorem people are not important to him.
Agitators then started contacting Margao voters and explained why they should
not vote for Digu next time. Madgaokars always been sulking that they have to
face long queues of trucks and dust pollution when they visit Zambaulim
Damubab, the gram-dev of Madgaokars. They never knew who was responsible? They
were informed that these trucks come from mines in which Digu had interest.
This seems to?have hit?the bull's eye. CM then told the people that he has a
solution and requested a delegation of agitators to come to Panjim, as he has
to leave outstation.
Some 10 people went to Panjim, while the crowd sat on the road at Margao. The
crowd also took rally through the Margao town informing about mining
misdeeds/curruption/loot and shouting slogans against the CM.?More than 300
Margao people also joined the rally at this?stage.?
At Panjim, CM tried to dodge the 10 representatives. But?they had answers to
every excuse of his. On two ocassions they showed him documentary evidence to
prove his lies/ignorance.
When made reasonless he?was forced to yield. CM said " if I were a Curchorcar
and not the CM, I would also hurl stones at the trucks". We brought him back to
the topic reminding him that we wanted rational results and not rhetorics.??
Agitators in Margao continued to expose Digu's mining exploits, excesses. To
save the face the CM asked Churchill, Jose Philip and the Collector to meet us.
They too had no words of conviction. When pushed on the back foot, Churchill
played one-up-man-ship?by saying that he wants to go one step ahead of CM and
scrap the 4-Lane in toto.
This was all possible only because we targetted two things
1) His personal residence (seems his wife dislikes this)
2) His voters (atleast 300 Margao voters made to think)
We now know for certain that he does fear some things.
We can now say that if agitations are genuine and managed professionally and

[Goanet] (Goanet) Meet beautiful Shakuntala de Mapuça

2011-02-10 Thread Domnic Fernandes

SHAKUNTALA FOUNTAIN REVIVED, FINALLY

HERALD CORRESPONDENT

Porvorim, Feb 9

The Shakuntala Fountain in the Mapusa market was finally
revived after almost a decade.

Chief officer of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and MMC
Chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar restored the Shakuntala fountain on Monday
evening.

The Shakuntala fountain is an important landmark of the
Mapusa Municipal market.

The fountain, which is at the entrance of the municipal
market, was inaugurated in 1962 by Indian Military Governor Major General K.P.
Candeth. The beautiful scene of non-stop water flowing from the Shakuntala’s
pot is a treat to the eyes of the young and old.

The fountain had lost its beauty to lethargic attitude of
the municipal authorities. It has been years now that the Shakuntala fountain
has stopped functioning, but MMC did not bother to make it functional and
restore the beauty of the Mapusa market.

The issue of Shakuntala fountain was highlighted by the
media several times. Shiv Sena had also submitted a memorandum to MMC chief
officer on December 1, 2010, requesting the council to make the fountain
functional and restore the pride of the monument.

Speaking to Herald, Chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar stated that
MMC incurred Rs.15,000 for the restoration of the fountain.

“Since nobody bothered to restore the fountain, it remained
non-functional all these years. Except for electricity charges, no maintenance
expenses as such are required to keep the fountain functional,” said Kandolkar.

[Goanet] WHY NO ACTION AGAINST NUTAN SARDESAI?

2011-02-10 Thread Aires Rodrigues
While Judge Desmond D’Costa has been hauled up for allegedly
expeditiously disposing one case against Mahanand Naik, no action has
yet been taken against North Goa District Judge Nutan Sardesai against
whom there are very serious allegations.

The strictures against her were passed by the Bombay High Court itself
in a matter connected to the River Princess which she had heard
despite being a former employee of Mr. Anil Salgaocar. The High Court
held that Judge Nutan Sardesai had totally misdirected and committed
an error by directing the Goa government to refund Rs five and half
crores to Jaisu Shipping Ltd even though there was no such demand by
the company. The High Court also observed that Judge Nutan Sardesai
had exercised her discretion contrary to the well settled principles
of law and that she had committed a serious error in appreciating the
evidence in the case.

Besides hearing matters involving the interests of her former employer
Industrialist Mr. Anil Salgaocar, Judge Nutan Sardesai contrary to
judicial propriety and high standards of judicial ethics that is being
sought to be laid down by the Supreme Court had also favorably heard a
divorce matter relating to her own cousin brother.

It’s time the High Court cracks the whip. We need to also get rid of
some other unworthy and highly incompetent judges who continue to be a
liability to the justice delivery system.

For those who have the patience to read this lengthy and detailed
investigative report, there will be nothing but contempt for the Police in
all their avatars and for the Indian Justice system not in some backwoods
village but in the capital city itself.

Long live Tehelka!

And to think the Goa police have had similar uncivilized Singhs (aka North
Indians) in the top echelon for some years now.

Today's news says that the parents have been arrested for the crimes.

God forbid this happens to any decent citizen.

[Goanet] Please suggest me a good dentist

2011-02-10 Thread JoeGoaUk
Please suggest me a good dentist

Preferably from  Panjim or I can even travel to Margao
Less than a year i had my 2 teeth route canalled (RCT)
 each costing me Rs.1900 + 100 x-ray
Total about Rs. 5500  including two minor fillings..
Guess what?? All the filling disappeared as if the
substance used was substandard as in PWD roads?
Some doctors think money grows on trees?
It’s a rip-off, shame on such doctors

My last dentist from Panjim was not a good one bit lazy
 I would say.
I kept up with all my appointments but the dentist  didn’t.
Twice I had to go back home as the dentist was not at
its place.
One occasion the dentist phoned to say appt. Cancelled at
the last moment.

5,000 is big money for something that last for less than
a year.

Some of you may think I eat too much of meat ( or bones)
but no, I do that on an average once a week.
I am fed up, every time I eat something I had to  make
use of tooth picks now, even for the fish.

You help/advise would be appreciated

Last year, the going rate for  RCT was around 2,000
