Once again, I suggest that we study the issues separately..without

Heble is an honourable man who thinks that the uncle of the young lady is
also an honourable man. I submit that we look at this way:

a: If Gabe decides to walk up with a bunch of guys to his parish priests

could he be charged with assault?

b: Has anybody been found guilty in criminal court, yet?

[Goanet] 350 million have diabetes – and fast food gets the blame

Diabetes epidemic affects 350 million as crisis spreads to developing
nations

International survey reveals scientists have underestimated the impact of
obesity and blames western fast food for diabetes

More than 350 million people in the world now have
diabetes,
an international study has revealed. The analysis, published online by the
Lancet* *on Saturday, adds several tens of millions to the previous estimate
of the number of diabetics and indicates that the disease has become a major
global health problem.

Diabetics have inadequate blood sugar control, a condition that can lead to
heart disease and strokes, as well as damage to kidneys, nerves and the
retina. About three million deaths a year are attributed to diabetes and
associated conditions in which blood sugar levels are disrupted.

The dramatic and disturbing increase is blamed by scientists on the spread
of a western-style diet to developing nations, which is causing rising
levels of obesity . Researchers
also say that increased longevity is playing a major role..

[Goanet] An Ode to English language!

2011-06-25 Thread Marshall Mendonza
In this season of MoI controversy,* *I would like to share some lighter
verse on the English language which I came across. I hope you enjoy it as
much as I did.

Regards,

Marshall

*An Ode to English language!*

**

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes, but the plural of ox
becomes oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, yet the plural of moose
should never be meese.

You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice, yet the plural of house is
houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always called men, why shouldn't the plural of pan
be called pen?

If I speak of my foot and show you my feet, and I give you a boot, would a
pair be called beet?

If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, why shouldn't the plural of
booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those, yet hat in the plural would
never be hose,

And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.

** **

We speak of a brother and also of brethren, but though we say mother, we
never say methren.

Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, but imagine the feminine -
she, shis and shim!

** **

We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that
quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is
neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And some more…

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce
and hammers don't ham?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend.

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,
what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

** **

Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be
committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

We ship by truck but send cargo by ship.

We have noses that run and feet that smell.

Your house can burn up as it burns down.

We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.

You fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm goes off by
going on.

Father is Pop, but Mother's not Mop?

[Goanet] COLUMN: Mid-day meal or poison? Is the Education, Health departments and FDA not equally responsible?

Mid-day meal or poison? Is the Education, Health departments and FDA not
equally responsible?

By Nisser Dias
nisserdias at gmail.com
SMS to 9422437029

Last week as many as 52 students from Murgao High School had to
hospitalized after consuming free mid-day meal dished out to them, which
was prepared by Saraswati self help group (SHG). As we all know that
this is not the first instance where this particular SHG has been
responsible for the serving poisoned meal to the students as it had
happened just two years back, but still this SHG managed to bag the
contract even after being blacklisted. This is the irony of this
government, for whom the welfare and well being of the future generation
is the last priority.

Of course at the moment all the daggers and swords are pointed towards
the Saraswati SHG and especially at its president Urmilla Salgaocar –
who is on the run and is evading arrest. Undoubtedly she has to answer
lots of questions which is much better then facing parents, however
equally responsible are people holding top position in the Education
department, Health department and the Directorate of Food and Drug
Administration (FDA).

How did the Education department overlook Urmilla Salgaocar’s Saraswati
SHG’s bad track record while granting her the tender. Was it at the
instance of the politician? Did the health department and FDA carry out
inspection to oversee hygiene aspects of the kitchens where the food
would be prepared before giving their nod to the successful bidders? Or
are we talking about kickbacks and underhand deals.

Be that as it may, what is the purpose of the mid-day scheme. And are
the departments involved in the scheme trying to make it successful?
When the Government of India had formulated the scheme it had a five
point agenda:- firstly protection of children from classroom hunger,
second was to increase school enrolment and attendance. third improving
socialization among children of all castes, fourth addressing issue of
malnutrition among children and lastly social empowerment of women by
creating employment.

For us to achieve success in the mid-day meal programme our Education
department, Health department, FDA and Women and Child Development board
has to work in tandem and dedicatedly. For instance, last week’s
incident of students consuming poisoned food could be avoided if the
Education department personnel had only adhered to the Government of
India’s observations.

On 10th May 2011 Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of
School Education and Learning, Government of India had deliberated on
the mid-day meal. The observations of the Monitoring Institution were
intimated to Education Secretary P. V. Rao, Director of Education Dr.
Celsa Pinto and Dy. Director of Education Anil V Powar. The observation
of the Monitoring Institution were :-

In Urban areas:- “It was observed that mid-day meal (MDM)
supplied by NGOs/SHGs is not given in time, roti and green
vegetables are never given, mainly dal, sambar and kheer
are dished out. That the food provided is generally not
liked by students especially upper primary school students.
That the teachers are not aware of the quality and quantity
of MDM. That in 80% schools there is difference between
attendance sheet and MDM Sheet. That utensils were not
available in most of the schools”.

In Rural areas:- “In 95 percent, supplies for MDM are kept
at the SHG president’s home from where it is brought daily
by the cook to prepare the mid day meal. That in 10 percent
schools, the president do not provide required quantity of
food grain for cooking mid day meal and the presidents of
SHG do not take interest in MDM. That in 40 percent schools
teachers do not taste the food either due to the caste of
the cook or because of the poor quality of mid day meal.
That non iodized salt is used in 5 percent of schools, 30
percent SHGs use wood for cooking mid day meal. 95
percent of the schools do not provide soap and towels
to students. That 60 percent cooks are not aware of
standards of MDM. Lastly 20 percent of the kitchens are
not properly cleaned and maintained.

I have my doubts whether Dr. Celsa Pinto and her deputy Anil Powar even
read the document, instead they must have shelved it. Dr. Pinto is in
her own world and Powar is busy scheming to occupy the director’s chair.
First and foremost the Education department, Health department has to
tell us about the criteria adopted to issue tenders to SHGs to prepare
mid-day meal. Did the officials check the credentials and experience of
the SHGs, have they checked their kitchens and store rooms.

It is high time that the education department sets a system to monitor
the mid-day meal. It should set up school committees or empower PTAs of
each schoo

I find the enclosed report very strange. One would have thought that

The Central Bureau of Investigation will not probe the role of
politicians as well as journalists in the Goa police-drug peddler nexus
case.

CBI SP SS Gavli told reporters that the inquiry will include the
"overall drug scenario in Goa."

"About politicians and journalists. we cannot rely only on media reports
for investigation. There are police officers who have been named. As far
as we know it is a police-drug peddler nexus," Gavli told reporters.

The much talked about case, which saw seven policemen including a Police
Inspector being arrested, also smacked of the involvement of politicians
and journalists after suspects questioned by the police named several
people close to politicians as well as mediapersons.

A Swedish model and former girlfriend of Israeli drug dealer Yaniv
Benaim alias Atala, one of the prime accused in the drug probe had told
an Israeli tabloid that Goa Home Minister Ravi Naik's son Roy, was
involved in the thick of the trade. This has been disputed by the
Minister.

When asked if the agency would probe Roy, Gavli said, "We will not be
able to make unjustified remarks or comments".

Gavli, who heads the CBI's Goa branch, also said that the federal agency
would also probe the broad drug nexus in Goa, including the inflow and
trade of drugs in the tourist State.

"We are going to probe the drug network in a broader sense too by
tracking down the source of drugs how the network of drug trade in Goa,"
he stated.

Claiming that the drug scene in Goa was a "big concern" Gavli has
appealed to the people at large, to inform the agency officials about
any tip offs which could help them break the back of drug trade in the
State.

"We are in the process of taking over investigation related documents
from the local police stations," he informed, adding that the local
police would be roped in for logistical assistance in order to probe the
drug network.

[Goanet] After 7 yrs of harassing Aires Rodrigues and 14 others, Fr Newton seeks to withdraw his 2004 complaint

2011-06-25 Thread SOTER

Gabe asked:
"Is it the norm in Goa - that priests take young girls to their bedroom for
confession, as alleged at the onset? Goa stinks from the top up, to bottom
down, how conveniently he got a plum overseas posting - paid in hard currency -
albeit the Rupee is getting there as well."

Comment:
We will have to ask the girls. Really shocking to imagine the level of Gabe's
fantasy.
Such sweeping allegations are unfortunate. Why do we not talk of priests who
have brought back smiles on so many faces. Are the lay catholics in Goa any
better when it comes to their conduct with women? If Goa does have priests who
have a problem with women it is reflective of the value systems in Goan
society. Do lay people not succumb to sexual temptations?
Let us first take a good look at ourselves before we embark upon removing the
log in anothers eye. This is the teaching of Jesus for his followers. Or else
it will be like the as corrupt BJP pointing fingers at the Congress.

Help! There Is a Pilot In the
Cockpit

April 16, 2011 By: Menezes George Category: Humour and
Satire

How much elasticity must an old man like me have in order to stretch my
memory to conversations that took place in the year 1956 somewhere in Mahim,
Mumbai at their local Gymkhana?

It was a conversation amongst a few young men in their late 20s about one of
the local girls getting married. Nice young men some of whom went to join
the Army and become Adarsh-living Generals, unless they were killed in
battle, others who opted to join the priesthood and become Bishops or church
bashers, and even some, who became entrepreneurs and philanthropists.

“She is getting married to a Pilot Officer, wow !!” said one of them. “Lucky
devil” said somebody else. “She is the prettiest girl in our entire
suburbs”.

“Lucky girl” said somebody else, “it is not so easy to catch a Pilot
Officer. Blue uniform with gold decorations, almost 500 rupees a month in
salary not to mention perks and lots of travel and excitement”.

“Isn’t it risky to marry a pilot officer” asked one. “Not all of them fly.”
said another “There are common designations like Pilot Officer, Flying
Officer, Flight Lieutenant and Squadron leader for even those in the ground
services. He is a graduate officer in the logistics branch”.

“Only the most competent, the most skilled and highly trained become pilots
in the Indian Air force. The citizens of this country can sleep in peace
because the skies for our country are secured by our pilots and navigators
backed by dedicated ground services

Fast forward to March 2011.

Final year college students sitting at the neighbouring coffee outlet
“dude-ing” away instead of attending classes. I sit at the table next to
them and over hear a conversation I am normally not used to

“So dude what’s the latest?” “Nothing new, dude except that I’ve applied for
a pilot’s job”.

“Pilots job?” says another dude. “You haven’t even finished college. Pilots
have to do years of training at a flying school, complete the specified
number of flying hours as copilots, get certified by the flying school, work
as a trainee pilot, get certified by the government appointed Civil Aviation
Authority and go through a rigourous process of being selected by an
Airlines.

“Which century are you living in guys” says the aspiring pilot. He opens a
thick file full of documents. “See this” he says this is my graduation
certificate.

I got it from the Xerox guy around the corner. He told me that if I was
worried about the graduation certificate standing up to scrutiny, he would
arrange for some smart guy to write the B.Com exam for me”.

“And see this” he said. “A brand-new certificate from the Katrina Flying
Club in New Orleans, USA. It is not that easy” he continued “I had to wait
seven months till their damaged aircraft were repaired. They had been badly
damaged by another pilot aspirant from India, some woman called Gariba
(garib as in poor) who it appears always landed without letting down the
landing gear.”

“So how well did you learn to fly?” said a woman who had just joined the
conversation “Not too bad” he said. I know what the nose wheel is and where
it is located. I can get you that ILS stands for Instrument Landing System.
I can tell a Piper Cub from the Pied Piper of Hamlin. I actually did three
hours flying with the instructor. Except that they had to sedate me when I
started screaming and threatened to jump out of the aircraft before takeoff.
I had not told them in my application that I had a fear of flying.”

“It must have been tough” someone said. “Around 20 lakhs” he said. As a
result my parents have become too impoverished to travel by air anymore.
There are other reasons of course.

What happened to Gariba? they asked. She was thrown out of the flying school
for damaging aircraft and she took it very badly. She said they would never
do such a thing in India where her father was a top gun in the Directorate
of Civil Aviation. We became good friends.

“She is now a pilot with our Rational Airways Undertaking”. “Never heard of
it” ventured one of the smarter dudes. Why rational and not national?” Oh
that’s simple”. Because they have an explanation or excuse for everything
that rotten that happens. Undertaking was a typographical error which
stayed. The PR department wanted to call it Rational Airways Undertaker but
the directors shot the idea down”.

“We are glad for you” said the classmates. “I suppose your girlfriend Gariba
with her connections in the Civilian Aviation Authority will organise a
certificate for you to become a pilot.

“Well, why not”. he laughed “She owes me. I made love to her right through
our stay in the USA. She was insatiable.”

The conversation was now getting hot and exciting.. “How did it turn out in
India” they asked with one voice.

“It turned out to be a disaster” he said.” We were trying to

[Goanet] After 7 yrs of harassing Aires Rodrigues and 14 others, Fr Newton seeks to withdraw his 2004 complaint

2011-06-25 Thread Sandeep Heble
I happen to know the Uncle of the girl who was allegedly molested by
the accused Priest. I know him for the last more than a decade. He is
an Executive Committee Member of our Badminton club and is also one of
the most active citizens from the Ribander area. He comes regularly to
play at the Indoor Stadium at Campal. He is honest, sincere and a good
natured person who is friendly to all. All others who know him
personally will also testify this. He is also actively involved in a
lot of social and community programmes in his locality and there is no
reason for me to believe that he has had any kind of an ulterior
motive to file a false complaint of such a nature against the accused
Priest.

When this sad incident of molestation allegedly occurred, my friend
did his level best to try and get due justice to his 10 year old niece
who was in a shocked condition then.  He ran from pillar to post but
none of the concerned authorities (the Government, the Police, etc)
were willing to take action against the accused. The entire legal
system which is supposed to treat all as “equals before the law” just
refused to work. Perhaps they may have received orders not to act from
their higher ups. The Priest, who is just as human as the rest of us,
was thus treated like a God who could not be touched.

During this period, all kinds of pulls and pressures were exerted on
my friend and his family, urging them to withdraw the molestation
complaint. After going through several rounds of this physical and
emotional harassment, fighting against a system that was refusing to
pay heed to their complaints, the family were left with no option but
to withdraw the charges.

These are the basic facts of the case as I understand them. It is sad
that we now get to hear words of divinity being attached to this
Priest.

This case is not an isolated incident. There are several cases like
these, where the men in the religious garbs (belonging to all
religions) have broken the laws, have indulged in criminal acts, but
the law has simply refused to act against them.

Just because someone is associated in the profession of Religion does
not make one divine. And it is high time we understand that.

regards,
Sandeep

[Goanet] Rent Control to End.

2011-06-25 Thread eric pinto
A terse announcement from Delhi in the matter of a former  local/state issue
proclaims the end of all controls on rents levied on private dwellings.
The ruling takes effect twenty four months from april.  There was no prior
debate, and little clamour since.
One can expect an epoch making change in the lives of coastal people who
flocked to live in urban areas like Bombay.  Gone will be thirty rupee rents
that had not been raised in fifty years. A lease that lasts only eleven months
will be the owner's sole obligation, with rents ruled by the market.  One can
expect to see every Goan club in Bombay shuttered.
I imagine Mallya, as well as back yard brewers can anticipate a significant
drop in sales. My own rent savings used to travel to distilleries in
Dundee. eric.

[Goanet] Support for Campal Stadium gains momentum

2011-06-25 Thread Sandeep Heble
The members of three city clubs, JCI St. Inez, Panjim Sports Festival
Committee and Young Boys of Campal yesterday strongly demanded the
reconstruction of the Campal Football Stadium and alleged that those
opposing the stadium had themselves developed their property where
more than 200 flats were expected to come up.

They also decided to organize the five-a-side Football Tie-Breaker
Tournament tomorrow Sunday June 26, to generate Public support and
opinion in favour of the rebuilding of the Campal Football stadium.

Speaking to reporters, Sandeep Heble went on to ad that the last few
days had given the Panjim residents reasons to cheer as well as a few
moments of disappointment. Moments to cheer because the Executive
Director of SAG Mr. V. M. Prabhudesai had stated that the Government
was seriously considering to build a state-of-the-art Football stadium
at Campal, with a capacity of 5000 spectators, which the city
residents were waiting for with gasping breath.

Heble said that the moment for disappointment came to him when he read
the CCP Mayor’s statement opposing the proposed stadium. Heble
divulged that no sooner had he read that, he called up the Mayor, who
he said, had admitted to him that he had not seen the plans at all.
Heble said that as such, “the Mayor’s statement was not only
disappointing but also premature and even irresponsible”. Heble
suspected the Mayor had given the statement only to please his fellow
Councilor colleague Kabir Makhija, who was opposing the stadium on
personal grounds and for nothing else.

The excuse of ‘decongesting the city’ is an eyewash meant simply to
pull the wool over the eyes of the public, since the CCP has been
giving permissions for hosting exhibitions at the Parade ground- where
thousands visit daily- Mr. Heble thundered. He further revealed that
all the 12 Councilors from the Panaji first Panel, apart from Leader
of the Opposition and city MLA Manohar Parrikar, had expressed their
support in favour of the stadium and that they would actively
participate and promote the event on Sunday. He further said that
apart from Councillor Kabir Makhija, none of the other Councilors had
opposed the stadium so far.

Dr Rufino Monteiro flayed the Government for changing the space
opposite Campal Stadium from residential and recreational zone into a
commercial zone. Dr Rufino further alleged that those who were
opposing the Stadium had themselves developed their property where
more than 200 flats were expected to come up. This would create a
permanent problem of traffic congestion and not the Football stadium
where matches are held only on weekends, Dr Rufino elaborated.

Fish, Football and Feni are an inherent part of the culture of Goa.
Fish has depleted, the Feni has become adulterated and now the
Government wants to remove the Football from our feet, thundered Dr
Rufino. Moreover, there will not be more than 30 top level games in
the whole year so the excuse of traffic congestion is eyewash,
remarked Dr Rufino.

CCP Councilor Surendra Furtado said that he was consistently after the
Government to build the stadium and even recently, he had called up
the Chief Minister who had promised to do the needful soon. Furtado
said that every village has its own stadium and it is high time Panjim
city has its own as well. “Noted architect Milind Ramani has
conceptualized the plan for 3000 spectators with options for quick and
smooth traffic disposal. So, what is just needed is the Government’s
signal,” added Furtado. “2 or 3 families cannot hold the city to
ransom”, thundered Mr. Furtado.

Michael Ribeiro, representing one of the local organizing clubs and a
resident of the Kaddint area (located exactly opposite the Campal
grounds) denied that the locals were opposing the stadium. Nobody is
opposing it, we are all for it, but we want that this ground should
also be made available to the local clubs to play against one another
but not must be handed over solely to the GFA”, he remarked.

Joaquim Teles appealed to the people to come out in large numbers on
Sunday and participate in the Football Tie Breaker, which would send a
strong signal to the Government in favour of the stadium. Mr. Teles
said that they had received entries form around 50 teams so far;
including 10 teams from Miramar and 5 teams from Campal which itself
showed how much support there was for Football in the city. We are
sure the figure of participating teams will go up to 100, expressed a
confident Teles.

Mr. Hilary Fernandes, President of Panjim Sports Festival Committee
and Mr. Manoj Patil, past Zone President of Goa Jaycees also spoke on
the occasion. GFA Executive Committee member Angelo Albuquerque was
also present on the occasion.

[Goanet] Over 100 teams support Campal Stadium rebuilding move

2011-06-25 Thread Sandeep Heble
TEAM HERALD

spo...@herald-goa.com

Panjim: The movement for rebuilding the Campal Stadium in the capital
city received a big shot in the arm as the residents of Campal,
exactly opposite the stadium at Haddint, came out in support of the
same while on the other hand more than 100 teams have lined up for the
5-a-side football tournament on Sunday as a show of strength for the
rebuilding move. That apart, Panjim MLA, Manohar Parrikar has thrown
his weight behind it, supporting the championship with prize money.

Haddint’s Michael was almost in tears when he disclosed that the
youth from the area in Campal had nowhere to go to play in the city.
“We have to send our children to Taleigao and Santa Cruz. The ground
must be available to the locals. Just opposing the rebuilding does not
solve the problem. The ground was there earlier and no one had any
problem,” he pointed out.

“More than 100 teams will be playing on Sunday as a mark of solidarity
for rebuilding the stadium. We have teams from Haddint, Campal, Santa
Ines, Mira Mar itself besides other parts of Panjim. Haddint itself
will field four teams. Then, there are teams from other parts of
Tiswadi also. It will be a huge turn out on Sunday to promote football
as well to support the move for rebuilding the stadium,” claimed
Sandeep Heble of JCI Santa Ines at a press briefing at SAG conference
hall, here, Friday.

Heble was sad that CCP Mayor Yatin Parekh had spoken about a
playground at the Campal site when he was ignorant about the plan by
GSIDC for a 2500 capacity stadium. “The Mayor has not seen the plan
and he commented without proper knowledge. That is not proper. There
is provision for parking 300 cars and 2-wheelers, cafeteria, office
rooms, dressing rooms, referees room, a seaside road. I suspect the
Mayor’s intentions reflect a CCP corporator’s plans for a big
commercial complex which could lead actually to a permanent congestion
and traffic problems,” reasoned out Sandeep. “You have exhibitions
being permitted by CCP. There is congestion all over. Look at the
problem near Sharada Mandir school. Football traffic is just one
hour.”

CCP corporator Surendra Furtado explained that very few families from
Campal were against the rebuilding move. “The day is not too far when
someone from Delhi will come and build a mega project in the open
space. It’s time Panjimites come out and fight like others do in
villages and other areas,” he added.

“Plans have been already drawn up by GSIDC for 2500. We don’t want a
30,000 stadium costing Rs 80 crore. The small stadium designed by
architect Milind Ramani would cost at the most Rs 18 crore today,’’
assured Dr Rufino Monteiro.

Joaquim Teles, former SAG jt director, stated that Rs 4,000 (winners),
Rs 3000 (runners-up), Rs 2000 (3rd place), Rs 1500 (4th place), Rs
1000 each (5th to 8th), individual prizes and trophies will be
awarded. “The response has been tremendous. We have even teams coming
from Candolim, Mapusa. Vintage Hospital will field two teams.

Manoj Patil of Panjim Sports Festival Committee highlighted that with
proper traffic management, there would be no problem. “We have a
5-star hotel at Santa Ines and one is aware about the parking problem
there. Our children have to stay at home in the absence of a
playground,” stated Manoj.

GFA Executive Committee member Anju Albuquerque and Hilary Fernandes,
President of Panjim Sports Festival Committee also lent their full
support for the cause of rebuilding.

I thank Dr. Colaco for enlightening me on the true meaning of the phrase
'Agent Provocateur'. Besides what meaning he has attributed to this French
phrase and which is available at google.com, it is also the name of a
rather provocative 'lingerie'.

I have adopted this phrase to highlight the role of 'ENGLISH' in the now
raging MOI conflict where Marathi is the sole loser and therefore the
heartache of the Goan Marathi-wallas. Konkani will survive like it has
survived even without the patronage of the erstwhile Portuguese for 450
years, when Marathi was pampered and Konkani was looked down upon. Those
who are responsible for the great GOAN DIVIDE i.e. 'Catholics for Konkani'
and 'Hindus for Marathi' are the ones who are being exposed, but Konkani
will always remain the mother tongue of all GOANS whether it is acknowledged
or NOT.

With reference to my dear friend Floriano Lobo's letter, "Agent Provocateur

his home-work perperly. "Agents Provocateurs" are inciting agent(s) in the
form of a person/s employed by the police or other malevolent entity to act
under-cover to entice or provoke others to commit an illegal act. More
generally, the term refors to a person or group that maliciouly seeks to
discredit or harm another by rpovoking them to commit a wrong or rash
action. By unwittingly using the pompous two french words, in such an
unfortunate controversy, Floriano has sadly inflicted a self-gaol.

[Goanet] 10 things you could do with plastic waste - Source India Syndicate

2011-06-25 Thread Camillo Fernandes

10 things you didn't know you could do with plastic waste
"We must save the world, plastics should be bannedblah, blah, blah!" There
is a lot ofhullabaloo about why we shouldn't use plastic and they are all
correct. But while finding a more eco-friendly substitute to plastic may take
time, here are some really fun and creative things you can do with plastic
waste. Go on... read and have fun with plastic.

Glitter in a bottle: Take a small empty plastic bottle, fill it half with oil
and half water, add food coloring and glitter and voila! A great toy for babies
to play with. Why babies? Even the older ones!

Yarn holder: Cut off the base of an empty plastic bottle and clean it out.
Stuff in your yarn and pull strand through the mouth of the bottle. Tape the
base back onto the bottle. With winter here and your aunty knitting a sweater
for you, this easy to make yarn holder will keep yarn from getting tangled
while knitting or crocheting.

Holiday plant waterer: Remove the cap and cut off the bottom of the bottle.
Invert the bottle and fix the mouth into the soil in the pot. Fill this
inverted bottle with water and allow your plants to be gradually watered when
you are away for a few day.

Free funnel: Cut off the base of a plastic bottle, invert and use as a funnel
in the kitchen or garage.

Toilet tank trick: Fill a bottle or two with water and drop it into your toilet
flush tank. You'll displace enough water to save a half gallon to a gallon with
every flush. Most toilets flush just fine with a little less water.

Spray Pumps: Some bottles can be fitted with a spray pumps and be used for
small projects.

Flower vase: Decorate an empty plastic bottle with paint, glitter and beads to
make a funky flower holder for your bathroom or kitchen!

Leak proofing: Slip a small plastic bag under the lids of jars for a leak-proof
seal. Especially good for items like pickle and chutney.

Substitute gloves: Wear bags as gloves to keep your hands clean when touching
raw meat. You can even wear plastic bags as 'gloves' while applying colour or
henna to hair.

Pretty decorations: With Christmas just around the corner, take a clear bottle
and draw various decorative shapes like butterfly, star, hearts etc. Cut out,
paint and decorate with glitter. Hang up on your Christmas tree for an
eco-friendly celebration.

QUESTION: On the other hand he is suing Aires for several thousands of
dollars for defamation, why so?. This ostensibly is on a pro bono or no
win no fee basis :-))

I checked with a top notch lawyer and he told me no way Jose! The priest
would have had to fork out a tidy sum or a hundred bucks for just a letter.

Is it the norm in Goa - that priests take young girls to their bedroom for
confession, as alleged at the onset? Goa stinks from the top up, to bottom
down, how conveniently he got a plum overseas posting - paid in hard
currency - albeit the Rupee is getting there as well.

Oheraldo is another of those Goa news purveyors, who stated that the priest
conditionally wants to forgive Aires and fourteen others, so long as Aires
does not pursue the priest. Are we to believe the reporting?

This is an all forgiving priest, if there are any more of the same, please
send them to London.

Fernandes pose for photographers during an announcement at the 49th Paris Air
Show at the Le Bourget airport near Paris June 23, 2011.

By Liau Y-Sing and Alan Baldwin
KUALA LUMPUR/LONDON | Thu Jun 23, 2011 12:26pm EDT
KUALA LUMPUR/LONDON (Reuters) - AirAsia (AIRA.KL) boss Tony Fernandes has never
done things small, whether running Asia's biggest budget airline, managing a
Formula One team or launching a bid for an English soccer club.
But by smashing the aviation industry's record for the number of planes in one
order and becoming Airbus's biggest airline customer with an $18 billion
purchase of 200 jets, the charismatic 47-year-old Malaysian has surprised even
himself.
"I didn't realise I was their biggest airline customer until today, and it's a
kind of an odd feeling," Fernandes told Reuters shortly after shaking hands on
the deal.
"I never realized I would get that size of testament to the staff at a company
creating such a successful model."
His bold move at the Paris Air Show is part of an ambitious expansion plan that
he hopes will see AirAsia's fleet size rival industry titan Southwest Airlines
(LUV.N).
His ambition to run a low-cost airline was first kindled while studying as a
boy at Epsom College in Britain.
"I always liked the idea of a low-cost airline, having gone to boarding school
and wanted to go home more often, and the idea was always in my mind."
His two great sporting passions back then were Formula One and West Ham United
football club, for which he bid unsuccessfully when it was last sold and is
still interested in buying now that they have slipped out of the Premier League.
"I grew up watching our version of Formula Three in Malaysia when I was five
years old. I used to camp out at Brands Hatch (as a schoolboy). In fact the
first (toy) model I bought at Brands Hatch was a (Lotus) JPS car," he told
Reuters shortly after his bid to join Formula One with Lotus Racing succeeded.
They became Team Lotus this year after a falling out with Proton-owned Group
Lotus, now sponsors of Renault F1.
He and his partners are also the owners of a car company, having recently
bought niche sportscar maker Caterham, whose current 7 model is based on the
classic Lotus 7 first built in the late 1950s, another toy in the young
Fernandes collection.
JEANS AND CAP
A UK-trained accountant and former Warner Music executive, Fernandes bought
over the then loss-making AirAsia in 2001 from Malaysian conglomerate DRB-Hicom
(DRBM.KL) for about 33 cents and took on the airline's debt of $13 million.
He grew the business from two Boeing planes, one destination and a staff of 250
into a regional operation with 375 aircraft delivered or on order, 65
destinations and almost 7,000 workers.
Forbes estimates his net worth at $470 million, but he works out of a
nondescript cubicle at Malaysia's low-cost air terminal and prefers jeans and
his trademark red AirAsia cap over business suits.
But there is little else that is understated about the man.
An aggressive marketer and now an active Tweeter, Fernandes raised AirAsia's
profile through the years via a series of cheeky, bright red advertorials and a
long-running verbal war with rival flag carrier Malaysian Airline System
(MASM.KL).
He has pushed hard for landing rights and butted heads with the Malaysian
government over securing new routes.
As a young boy he learned the art of selling when he tagged along with his
mother to Tupperware dealer parties and credits his years at boarding school
for shaping his work ethic.
"Despite being a different colour and different nationality, it taught me that
you earned your rewards by merit," Fernandes has said of his time at the
English private school.
Some of his co-workers paint a picture of a stubborn man who is determined to
chart his own course.
"He's very fair," said Tune Talk chief executive Jason Lo, a former musician
who worked with Fernandes during his Warner Music days. "He'd be very fair to
you even if he really despised you." Fernandes and another investor own 70
percent of Tune Ventures, which has a 35.7 percent stake in Tune Talk.
A non-smoker, he said it was only when discussing a JPS-reminiscent black and
gold racing car livery that he discovered the cigarette brand was still sold in
Britain.
Fernandes applies the same alcohol-free and halal approach to his Formula One
team catering as he does to AirAsia's regional flights in Asia.
His two-tier Formula One motorhome makes much of the old Lotus connection, with
black and white photographs on display, while the team's factory at Hingham, a
small market town in Norfolk, is near the old Lotus base at Hethel.
A regular at most races with his green team uniform and trademark red AirAsia
cap, Fernandes nonetheless missed this year's showcase Monaco Grand Prix, the
social highlight of the F1 season, pre

2011-06-25 Thread Tony de Sa
Joel Moraes :

Incompetent Education Department?

The recent blunder with regard to the SSC and HSSC results
confirms where the Education department of Goa Stands? When everything was
running smoothly the Education department suddenly came up with a foolish
idea
of changing the Education medium to local language till 8th standard
and that gave rise to the MOI controversy which looks like turning political
presently.
What a foolish idea by foolish Education department of which some foolish
are
all out to make a big issue?

Then comes the no detention policy by the education
department till 8th standard. The so called Headmasters association
of Goa initially threatened the department against the acceptance of the
policy
but finally they said yes to their unqualified bosses. They said one thing
and
did something different.

Instead of improving the state of Education in Goa, with the
recent happenings regarding Education in Goa, looks like the Education
bosses
believes in the opposite.

COMMENT:

a} Agreed that there was a goof up with the S S C and H S S C Exam results,
the S S C Board is an autonomous body which is not a part of the Education
Department per se, though they both deal with school education in Goa.

b) The idea of changing the MOI does not come from the local Government but
is dictated by the Right to Education Act (RTE) -A Central Act which itself
stems from a Constitutional provision that stipulates that each child in the
country shall be given free and compulsory education till the age 14. The
RTE states that the MOI for children shall be the mother tongue in the
Primary and Upper Primary classes. FYI, Primary stage is Std I to V and
Upper Primary Std VI to VIII. The term Middle School is not now used in the
rest of the country, Goa being one of the few exceptions.

c) No detention is also stipulated in the RTE and is not a vote catching fad
of the local Government. (Give credit where credit is due.) If you state
that Goa is not prepared for the no detention policy, then you would be
right.

d) While condemning the shifting stand of the Goa Headmasters Association,
please do consider that there was arm twisting on the part of the Department
with the threat of withholding Grants. While this could possibly be
challenged in the courts of law, remember that Heads of Schools are
employees and are responsible to their managements for the smooth running of
the School. Unless there was an explicit understanding with the managements
of the schools, the decision of the Heads to disobey a direct order from the
Department of Education would have put the schools and thousands of students
in jeopardy. If your child were to be studying in a school, would you not
like it to function properly as it should or would you not grumble if the
facilities offered to children in the school were denied for lack of grants
all because of the pigheadedness of the head? At the end of the day, each
parent is only interested in his/ her own child's welfare and the rest be
damned.

Before making accusatory statements like the last one, wisdom would demand
that one should at least be informed.

Goa CM faces anti-English ireIndia Blooms News Service

Panaji, June 24 (IBNS): Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat was greeted with
protests at two public functions in the capital on Friday over his decision
of approving English as the Medium of Instruction (MOI).
The supporters of regional languages staged protests on the streets and
within the premises where the two functions were held at Kala Academy and
National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).

About 15 activists from the Bhartiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) and
Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) were whisked away by the police as preventive
arrests in the Kala Academy for attempting to disrupt a healthcare function
in which Kamat was the chief guest.

Similarly, the chief minister was scorned by the protesters which also had
Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar shouting anti-government slogans.

The police however thwarted attempts by the agitators to mob the chief
minister as nearly 200 armed policemen cordoned off the protest area.

In the morning, Parrikar and supporters of regional languages besieged the
Panjim police station demanding that those detained 'be respectfully
released’.

The drama lasted for about three hours till the north Goa superintendent of
police Arvind Gawas and deputy superintendent of police Deu Benaulikar
personally came there and released them.

While in the evening, the protestors were stopped outside the National
Institute of Oceanography (NIO) where a sports function was organized to
felicitate Goa’s swimming icon Talasha Prabhu.

Parrikar entered the venue but returned back to the crowd as the chief
minister was yet to arrive for the event.

The protesters are holding protests at public events in which chief minister
Digambar Kamat is present.

State cabinet on May 25 approved English as the MOI along with Konkani and
Marathi languages. The decision sparked anger among the anti-English lobby
with warnings to pull down the government in the forthcoming assembly
elections.

Subject: [Goanet] MoI- The language of Communalism and Betrayal

The sudden stumbling blocks that have started to be placed by the Government
in the Medium of Instruction issue was a foregone conclusion. The genesis of
the opposition to the MoI and the communalisation of the issue is within the
Congress. It is surprising that the Monitoring Committee on MoI has now at
the twelfth hour stumbled upon some legal deficiencies in the circular that
needs to be sent back to the Law Department. After the deadline for parents
to give their preference on the medium of instruction has lapsed a fresh set
of forms gets sent out in Marathi and Konkani. The cunning Digu bab is the
greatest threat to the cultural fabric and peace within Goa and has mastered
the art of pretending to be pro-people and aloof from BJP. It now appears
that the circular was issued merely to avoid the PIL in the HC. It is high
time that Goans show the door to the CONG-BJP-NCP from Goa's politics in the
coming elections.
