[Goanet] MINING IN GOA: VOICE HEARD IN LONDON,U.K VEDANTA

2011-07-30 Thread Gerald Fernandes
CONGRATULATIONS! OBRIGAD! The action by activist/s at the Vedanta meeting in
U.K will go down in Goan  her/history as the international  bugle call against
the wanton destruction of Goa by the mining industry. We are certain that caring
international tourists will question whether their money should go to the Goan
Exchequer which does not protect the environment. Lets make things happen. Lets
organise instead of agonising.

Lets begin to hasten the end of unregulated mining. Lets loosen the
stranglehold of the Mining lobby on the Govt. of Goa.

LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC OF INDIA!

[Goanet] PHASING OUT MINING IN GOA

2011-07-30 Thread John Gomes
The Supreme Court has ordered immediate suspension of mining in Bellary
district .Reason stated is over exploitation of iron ore causing large scale
environmental degradation.Dempos was wise to get out from mining and
sucessfully diversify into other areas. The RP 2021 has cut out completely the
chapter on phasing out of mining which is more urgent here than in
Bellary!I ask everybody in authority who cares for the aam admi and Goa in
particular, GCCI and those wanting to green Goa and to create jobs, where is the
semblance of proper planning to phase out disasterous policies instead of
continuing and increasing mining activity under different guises and hidden
agendas?

[Goanet] Fwd: Nataka in Karnataka by Yedurappa

2011-07-30 Thread Nelson Lopes
Nataka in Karnataka by Yedurappa

The  BJP is  the principled opposition party in Parliament They label
themselves as the party with a difference. The drama unfolding in
Karnataka is the proof of it. In the first place against the counter
onslaught by the congress on scams involving the outgoing C.M. the
party rallied  behind the C.M supporting him against with false pride and ego
and at all odds, so as to not t give an edge to the congress party
Naturally the ex C.M. has taken advantage of this double speak. Now
that he has been asked to quit by the central party, he is lingering
at the door throwing a gauntlet to the party high command. The way
75/121 and 40 M.P`s of Lok Sabha,Rajha Sabha and M.L.C. Legislators
have reelected him as the party leader, it is indicative of the
revolt, rebellion and indiscipline in the legislators wing and
defiance of
party norms. Can the central leadership ignore this democratic demand
of a sizable members?
It is a HISTORY in the making, that the tainted ,resigning C.M. has
discretely offered
himself,  once again for  the coveted post, delaying election of the
successor, thus embarrassing the party beyond redemption He should
have forcefully, voluntarily declined and, refused to be the leader
once again The legislators very well knew the cloud under which he was
directed to resign and yet the majority are defiantly willing to incur
the wrought of the party in blatant defiance It is a test for the
central leadership of the party,  as the disciplined party with  a
difference to deal firmly and  enforce their authority, party writ
decisively  to redeem their pride and authority The C.M. and B.J.P.`s
earlier
argument was that he has not been   proved guilty and it is mere
perception of corruption. Now the LOK AYUKT has indited him and it is
established norm, decency to vacate till he establishes his innocence
beyond doubt. He has very deliberately chosen to throw caution and
propriety to winds The challenge to the B.J.P leadership is being
keenly watched as the FIRST test case. Till now Yedurappa has not
openly dissociated from the happenings or declined the outcome in
deference to the parties wishes, He appears determined to dig in his
heels It can be inferred that he is involved in behind the scene
manipulations. though his resignation move was to blunt the edge of
congress propaganda, Congress is having the last laugh at this
unfolding and at the machinations of BJP to extricate itself unscathed
from this boiling cauldron of rebellion.

Hi Goanetters,

Sorry for giving the wrong link for my song yesterday.
Here is a clip I made for Utube with the English/Konkani song I wrote for
Lorna in Sweet Fantasy from my Konkani CD Classic Goa

This is the correct link:

Dekho, Dekho, Dekho! Toronto Dekho!
See beautiful Toronto's Harbourfront Ontario Place, Canada!
To the sound of a beautiful voice by Lorna and Goan Music by Josinho
Based on a Portuguese tune Vem, vem minha flor!(O ABC do Coracao)

My favourite song Sweet Fantasy.
To record this song I had to fly to Goa first to meet Lorna 3 times in 3
days until she was ready to see me
and then I had to travel to Bombay to especially catch Lorna for this song
and two others to complete my CD album Classic Goa.
You check it out yourself and let me know if it wasn't worth my time to
humbly persevere and make sure Lorna recorded this song.

Thanks Lorna for making my dream come true!

I read Teo's above article with interest. The above caught my eye and raised

Portuguese. So:

1. What is the evidence for this migration and settlement?
2. Where did those settlers / ancestors come from and why did they move?
3. Why did they settle in Moira and Aldona?
4. Who were the residents (land-owners) of Moira and Aldona prior to these new
settlers?
5. Which ruler facilitated the migration of the settlers and why?

My reading of society in the pre-1500s was that it was sparse, (due to low land
productivity from poor farming techinques) and with a short live expectancy for
a whole variety of reasons.

[Goanet] Short, Simple and Direct

2011-07-30 Thread armstrong augusto vaz
Short, Simple and Direct

From College Girls to Corporate Executives; from School Students to
even Housewives -- all braved the rain. Eventually, they were rewarded
as India came back from two-goals down to hold UAE 2-2 in World Cup
Qualifier at the Ambedkar Stadium.

The character and attitude of the new-look Team India promises much.
“The juniors are ready for the challenge,” maintains Armando Colaco,
and that’s prompted him to remark, “This is the beginning of a new era
in Indian football.”

“When I took over and dropped some seniors, many had raised their
eyebrows. But I knew what I was doing. You ought to give it to the
boys.”

The new style of stressing on possessional ball play cannot be
implemented overnight; especially after the National Team has had a
penchant for long aerial balls for the past few years.

“It will take time,” Armando insists. “Initially, the boys found it
hard to adapt. But they are enjoying the new style at the moment,” he
goes on. “I’d request all to look at our International Friendlies
against Maldives and Qatar. You’ll understand what I mean,” he added.

The match against Maldives which was Armando’s first as the National
Coach ended 1-1 and then India beat Qatar 2-1 in an away match at the
Al Sadd Stadium in Doha.

The cynics may frown from here on. In the World Cup Qualifiers, a
nine-man India went down 0-3 and then at Home, India drew 2-2. If only
one could remember, India’s defensive organisation for the last 66
minutes never allowed their rivals to outnumber them despite having a
two-man advantage.

“Indian football is on the right track,” Armando says. “In football 11
vs 11 is different; 9 vs 11 is different.” But as you speak to him,
you just cannot stop him from praising the U-23 boys to the hilt.
“They are the future of Indian football. I’m lucky to have such a good
mixture of youth and experience in my squad.”

A little more than a month may have passed by but India’s U-23
Pre-Olympic squad haven’t yet been able to overcome the debacle of
drawing 1-1 against Qatar, a match they should have won handsomely.
“Jeje is special; Dika (Lalrindika Ralte) is special; Raju (Gaikwad)
is special. The entire bunch is special,” Armando keeps it short and
simple, much like his coaching.

Let’s not forget the Jeje-s, the Dika-s, the Raju-s are all products
of All India Football Federation’s Youth Development Programme. Even
as the U-19 squad presently trains in Shandong for the Weifang Cup and
the U-16 squad leaves for the U-16 SAFF Championship, a whole new
bunch of future stars are being groomed all over. The Supply line is
getting ready.

It’s Short, Simple and Direct.

AIFF RELEASE

The All India Football Federation expresses its gratitude to the Delhi
Soccer Association for their co-operation in the successful staging of
India’s World Cup Qualifier against UAE at the Ambedkar Stadium on
Thursday, July 28, 2011.

Thanking Mr. Subhas Chopra, the President of the Delhi Soccer
Association and the other members of the Association, Mr. Praful
Patel, the President of the All India Football Federation said, “It
wouldn’t have been possible to host the match without the support of
Mr. Chopra and all the honourable members.”

“On behalf of the AIFF, I thank the DSA and expect their co-operation
for the betterment of football in years to come,” Mr. Patel added.

Mr. Kushal Das, General Secretary, All India Football Federation,
appreciated the whole-hearted support of Mr. NK Bhatia, the Vice
President of the DSA, Syed Shaheen, the Honorary Secretary and the
Association in general.

“Mr. Bhatia’s experience guided us in the right path. He was a pillar
of strength all throughout,” Mr. Das said.

Mr. Das also thanked the Police and the Fire Brigade for their
endeavour in making the event a success.

The crowd who braved the rain to watch Team India in action also came
in for praise from Mr. Das. “The crowd ignored the rain and cheered
for Team India. I expect them to turn up in larger numbers the next
time the boys play,” he said.

[Goanet] Monserrate backs out of contest for Panaji seat

Monserrate backs out of contest for Panaji seat
TNN | Jul 31, 2011, 12.58AM IST

PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Manohar Parrikar can breathe easy now when
he contests for the record fifth term from Panaji in the next assembly
elections.

Education minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate will not cross swords
with him in the next assembly election.

Eight months ago, Monserrate's announcement that he would take on
Parrikar and leave Taleigao segment to his wife and village panchayat
sarpanch, Jennifer Monserate had triggered tremors in the BJP camp.

But now, he has decided to look for greener pastures for a spot to
return to the Goa assembly.

Confirming this, Monserrate told TOI Yes, I have decided to move out of
Panaji constituency.

Monserrate said the main reason for him to change his mind was that he
was unable to bring development in the capital city. It was
development that he had promised to Panjimites after his panel won the
Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) polls.

I had asked (the Congress party) for urban development portfolio so
that I could do something for Panaji, he disclosed adding that with
education (portfolio) I can't do much in the constituency.

Monserrate, who represents Taleigao in the assembly, said that if he had
to have the urban development portfolio instead of education, he would
have initiated several projects and got his proposals implemented for
the betterment of the capital city, its residents and its visitors.

He said he had many plans for the capital city but nothing could
materialize.

Monserrate is now eyeing Santa Cruz where he had fielded his wife in the
2007 election. Let me see, I haven't decided yet, was what Monserrate
said to a question on his plans for the next assembly elections, though
he indicated that Taleigao might not necessarily be his preference.

After Monserrate's 'capital' announcement, the CCP election had turned
out to be a mega battle between the two politicians. In a close
encounter, Monserrate who had declared the election as a semi-final,
pulled a victory for his panel - though by a small margin, four months ago.

For Monserrate it was a big victory as his opposition was not restricted
to Parrikar and his supporters. There were many others who wanted to see
Monserrate's panel defeated including professionals, builders and some
Congress leaders too.

He said he was confident that if he had to get urban development
portfolio, he would have surely defeated Parrikar. Parrikar is
representing Panaji since 1994.

I had got a very good feedback during CCP elections and despite heavy
odds against me, my panel had won with people's support. The writing on
the wall was clear, Monserrate said, adding that he would have defeated
Parrikar based on the development plank. But I could do nothing much
without the urban development ministry, he added.

Parrikar said it would make no difference to him whether Monserrate
contests or doesn't contest in Panaji in the next assembly elections. I
want to reiterate that as I had said earlier, I will contest. It's
final. There is no change from my side and it doesn't matter much to me
who will contest against me, he said.

Speaking to STOI, Parrikar further said I want to make it very clear
that I am not linked to Monserrate not contesting. Frankly speaking, I
have not spoken to Monserrate, neither in person nor telephonically, for
more than seven months now, except during the last assembly session.

He also stated that he takes all elections very seriously and added that
no one can take the electorate for granted and I've never done it.

Sources, however, said that there may have been some other factors for
Monserrate changing his mind to give up the Panaji challenge. For some
time now, a strong lobby had been working behind the scene to convince
Monserrate to pull out from Panaji.

Denials notwithstanding, the fear was that if Monserrate was in the
fray, Parrikar would not have had sufficient time to campaign in other
constituencies.

Yes indeed the Regional plan 2011 is COCK-EYED! Only a paradigm shift in
hackneyed priorities of yore can deliver some soothing emollient for
the citizens of India ,resident in Goa , and others at large. In the light of
the Supreme Court suspending Mining in Bellary, we can be almost certain that
the much touted Mining Corridor in Goa would meet a quiet burial at THE
BEHEST OF THE MINING LOBBY ITSELF. We should not be surprised at the Mining
lobby itself seeking to revisit the Regional Plan 2011. The bang out of their
bucks will be missing for some time to come!!!
