Re: [Goanet] Indian rescued Hemingway after Africa plane crash?
Mayabhushan wrote: Panaji:Bullied by a herd of wild elephants and down to their last rations, Nobel Prize-winning writer Ernest Hemingway, his wife and a pilot were rescued by an Indian expat after their plane crashed in east central Africa in the 1950s, the savior's son has said. --- Mayabhushan Nagvenkar, This article of yours has jogged my memory. Thanks. Some random points: 1) Hemingway crashed twice on that Ugandan trip. After he was was rescued from the first one (the one you recounter) another plane that was sent to rescue him, crashed too i.e. before he returned to the Ugandan capital. 2) The fact that he was picked up by a Ugandan tourist boat is well documented. 3) If I am not mistaken, I actually met this Goan captain in 1964. I have a movie film of the boat on this Nile trip and hopefully will be able to find it and convert it to the current electronic formats. 4) The tourists boats above Murchison Falls were more like tugs. The were built of steel with a large diesel engine in the center. They were specifically designed to travel thru hippo infested areas. Hippo's, then and now, have this nasty habit of surfacing beneath boats, capsizing the smaller ones. 5) The area below Murchison Falls is one of the wildest areas in Africa. It is part swampland and part grassland as the rainfall is heavy and the Nile often floods. The reeds there are 8 ft tall and the elephant grass is even taller. The soil itself, though very fertile, is soft and it is difficult to build roads or penetrate in these areas. It is Africa in its most natural form. My late dad used to tell the story of the time he pulled up onto a ferry ramp with his VW Beetle. He got out of the car and saw the ferry approaching so he went to talk to the other drivers in the three car convoy. When he returned to his car, five minutes later, he saw a friend of mine and me on the concrete ferry ramp. 20 ft away were two crocodiles sunning themselves on the ramp. Mouths open. 6) I still have a rock that was picked up from a few feet before the Murchison Falls. When left in the sunlight, the copper in it sparkles. The copper % deemed it insufficient for a commercial mine then. The western govts will never allow the Ugandans to build a copper mine in that ecological area today. 7) One of these days, something will prod me to write about a hunting incident and an almost crash I had on a light aircraft in Tanzania. We were laughing at the time but looking back at my mis-spent youth, I almost believe that I have a very powerful guardian angel. Here is one of the pictures from that Ugandan trip of 1964. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45002663@N00/6988581645/in/photostream/ Mervyn

Dear George, Rico seems to need more proof that the Press in Goa is Gagged and Caged. I think he should not go far but look not beyond the porch of his house. He will find plenty. :-) It seems that those media houses that have started CTV Channels are charging Rs. 5000/- and onwards to interview/promote people etc. Paid brainwashing would you say?? Cheers floriano goasuraj 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org PS: We are glad, nay, happy that Aires has at last found out that the Press in Goa is Gagged and Caged. :-) - Original Message - From: George Pinto georgejpi...@yahoo.com To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! goanet@lists.goanet.org Sent: Saturday, July 20, 2013 11:51 PM Subject: Re: [Goanet] IS THE PRESS IN GOA GAGGED AND CAGED? IS THE PRESS IN GOA GAGGED AND CAGED? The short answer is YES. The long answer is YES, under both political parties. The press receives Govt. subsidies in the form of advertisements which is a revenue source, hence unlikely to criticize the govt. Also access to govt. is restricted or denied to adversarial press persons. The big press outfits in Goa are the mouthpieces of the big business owners, hence the slant on important issues. Also the press in Goa has not cultivated itself as integral to a functioning democracy, instead it is viewed as a peripheral item. Besides the press is Goa, like the press in the USA, comes across as partisan, hence self-marginalization. There are other reasons, lack of time does not permit me to expand. George
Re: [Goanet] Will not allow govt. to acquire land for Mopa airport : Pernem farmers
Stating that the farmers from Pernem taluka are neither attracted to the compensation from the government towards their land, nor interested in their rehabilitation the MOPA VIMANTAI PEEDIT XETKARI SAMITI (MVPXS), an association of the Mopa airport affected farmers on Saturday said that it would not allow the government to acquire their land for the proposed Mopa International Airport. Secretary of MVPXS, Sandeep Kambli, addressing a press conference in the city stated that the Warkhand, Cansarvarnem and Chandel villages in Pernem taluka have 24 lakh sq. metres, 13 lakh sq. metres and 8 lakh sq. metres of land under cultivation respectively and the governmnent now proposes to acquire the same for the airport proejct. The farmers from these villages, who for generations together are cultivating paddy, besides growing cashew, mango and areca nut crops, are just not interested in selling their land Kambli added, maintaining that the government had already turned farmers around the state incompetent through its populist schemes by providing them with monthly doles and the farmers from Pernem don't desire the same fate. We know how important it is to grow crops and vegetables, especially now that the central government is all set to reduce the food grain quota of the state he quipped. not a single farmer from the MPVXS has taken a single rupee of the govrnmetn compensation. When there are 2-3 petitions pending in the courts, the question of taking money doesn't arise. We are not ready to sell our fields he said. It was informed that the governemtn has already acquired 74 lakh sq. metres of land to construct Mopa airport and needs another 10 lakh sq. metres land for construction of a special approach raod to the airport. Kambli also alleged that the governemtn is tryi8ng to acquire the land by ook or crook, by going to the extent of even adding names of tenants on I and XIV forms, even though these tenants have no supporting documents. Speaking further, he said that the report of the ICAO suggests that the Mpa INternational Airport would not be sustainable without other ancillary proejcts like a cyber city, the Keri jetty, sports city at Dhargal, a starred hotel and golf course at Reracol and so on. All these infrastructureal proejcts will damage the eco sensitive PErnem taluka including the Mopa village, which is a part of the Western Ghats he mentioned, noting that deforestation of the Mopa plateau as well as surrounding slopes will be dangerous for Goa's environment. Finally, Kambli strongly came out against another group People for Mopa International Airport which has demanded Mopa to be made the only international airport by handing over Dabolim airport to the Indian Navy as a defence base. This group is supported by a political force and consists of people with vested interests he alleged, maintaining that the residents from Salcete are rationally thinking peple and therefore the Pernem farmers have joined their opposition to the proposed Mopa International Airport. However, we don't interpret the issue as a North Goa-South Goa conflict he concluded.
Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest, Vol 8, Issue 473-Ration Card
The problem is simple. Politicians vote bank and corruption. Ration Card IS ONLY FOR RATIONS! Today it is legally and officially (Our Civil Supplies Dept has even sent a notification/published in newspapers on Consumer Protection Council insistence) NOT VALID FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE! Why all these illegalities, no action on illegalities, and poor people in these difficult times where essential commodities prices have gone through the roof, NOW CANNOT GET A RATION CARD,EVEN IF THEY SURRENDER THEIR VILLAGE CARD/OBTAIN PROOF, and they have an Aadhar card, children in school and a bank account ? Any citizen of India anywhere should not die of starvation or for that matter children due mid-day meals? Million of tons of government stored food grains rotted, year after year, no politician or bureaucrat punished, infected food grains through PDS etc. What an irony! Message: 6 Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2013 00:08:04 +0530 From: Camillo Fernandes camillofernan...@hotmail.com To: undisclosed-recipients:; Subject: [Goanet] How to be a Goan in 8 steps? www.thegoan.net Message-ID: bay174-w52ef534554e49ab11a40b6c4...@phx.gbl Content-Type: text/plain; charset=Windows-1252 How to be a Goan in 8 steps? From a ration card to EPIC, to a driving licence to a Passport and now the Aadhaar Card, becoming a Goan is easy for a migrant Team Goan ,Mangor 20 July 2013 This is easily the mother of all stories on the politics of migration. A former Vasco Councillor - a migrant - had his name in three electoral rolls, one in Vasco and two in his native Uttar Pradesh. But as we found out, you don?t need to be councilor to be on electoral rolls easily. The seemingly innocuous ration card creates new Goans. A journey through the slums of Mangor is a revelation of how Goa has enabled many migrants to have dual identities and hence dual benefits. One as a Goan and another one back home.?Though it has become stringent now, it was very much possible in the past to make a Ration Card which would open up multiple opportunities for you,? explains Anil Chopdekar, former Vasco Councillor from Mangor. The process is fairly simple. A migrant labour first comes to Goa and takes up a job. The luckier ones get registered with a contractor, while the free floaters search for jobs at daily wages. Next they approach the local panch or councillor to get a ration card. ?We get food cheaper from the government with the ration card and then we can also include the names of our family members and relatives when they join us later,? explains Seetharamaiah K from Bijapur who resides in Patrong, Baina. These ration cards as we found out are separated into different ration cards as the family expands. The ration card is next used to apply for a driving license and including the migrant?s name in the voter?s list as well. Both require a No Objection Certificate from the landlord and the local panch or councillor who willingly obliges. ?We were constantly under pressure from the local MLAs past and present, and other elected representatives and party functionaries to include names in voter?s list not very long ago. Thankfully now we insist on deletion certificates, which are proof of that fact that you have deleted your name from a ration card in your earlier place of residence,? says a senior official at Mamlatdar?s Office in Vasco. The ration card emerges as key factor too,o in getting the migrant a permanent address of sorts that helps him procure his PAN Card, open a bank account, apply for a driving license and even apply for a passport. ?Why just these documents, even the Adhaar card can be made using the ration card. What we have is one document that is illegal, since the migrant has often not surrendered his card back home, to create a whole series of documents?, points activist Yatish Naik. No wonder then that many of Goa?s MLAs have offered to setup Adhaar card kendras in their own offices. The migrant continues to have a permanent home away from home and a dual identity thanks to a willing governance system. How to be a Goan: A migrant's primer STEP 1 - Get Ration Card Helping Hand ? landlord?s NOC + local MLA?s letter or local Panch / Councillor undertaking) STEP 2 ? Get Gas / Electricity / Water / Telephone Connection Helping Hand ? Ration card plus landlord?s NOC and letter from local MLA STEP 3 ? Inclusion in Voter?s List Helping Hand ? Ration Card + local MLA?s or local Panch / Councillor?s letter, and Affidavit of residence) STEP 4 ? EPIC or Voter?s Identity Card Helping Hand ? Inclusion in Voter?s List STEP 5 ? Driving Licence Helping Hand ? Ration Card STEP 6 - Bank Account Helping Hand ? Ration Card or EPIC or Driving Licence STEP 7 ? Passport Helping Hand ? Ration Card + Driving License + EPIC STEP 8 ? Aadhaar Card Helping Hand ?
[Goanet] Priests estate etc
Priests estate etc When some priests die prematurely or otherwise, there are often fights amongst the legal heirs (brothers/sisters etc) for the huge estate left behind by the deceased. Should there be a case like this, I feel, the church should take over such ill-gotten wealth etc which got amassed after becoming the priest. Be it from the foreign trips, business or some donations that are unaccounted for. Priesthood is not a profession or a business entity. They should not own huge bank balances, properties (Land. Buildings etc) other than their share in the ancestral property. Priests are supposed to be next to God but when was the last time we heard of a saintly priest after Venerable Agnelo D’Souza that’s about 86 years ago? ‘ami sogle nitoll nant’ and that’s includes Godmen. [Goanet] Is Raising FDI Limits A Reform
Poor response on FDI in multi brand retail indicates that investors are not interested. Reforms may help rich people and corporate houses but definitely for common man - the Aam Aadmi. Aam Aadmi is concerned with how much he has to spend from his pocket for day-to-day survival. He is not bothered of any other thing. And today our Economy is just crashing down and down day after day! Is this called Reforms? If this were a TV serial, we would have run a background laugh track on the following news headlines: 1) Government unleashes big-bang FDI reforms; And 2) Posco walks out of the biggest FDI project in Karnataka Ironically, both headlines happened on the same day. The two sets of news, however, summarizes the ground reality: There is a huge difference between announcement and actual inflows. Take the case of the governments much-publicized FDI in multi-brand retail. Nothing has come out from opening up of FDI in multi-brand retail. None of the players are keen on investing in India as the riders are unrealistic. Just the announcement of opening up of FDI cannot be termed as a reform. The announcement in no way makes India an attractive investment destination! It is only the ease of doing business that attracts entrepreneurs. But this would require governance, which the present government seems incapable of. Indian businessmen are also not investing in India and prefer other countries because of various hurdles and governments policy of repeatedly changing the rules of the game after capital has been committed. Till the government offers single-window speedy clearances, the announcement will be treated as a lip service. Analysts might call term announcements as reforms and try to pump up the market, but the ground reality is that it amounts to nothing. The maximum it would do is allow telecom players to buyout their Indian partners. The day the government creates a transparent and easy way of doing business in India, there will be enough Indian entrepreneurs lining up to set up businesses. The country would then not require foreigners to help in employment creation. They would in fact be pleading for a toe-hold. BACK TO POSCO. Signed in 2010, Poscos 6-million-tonne steel refinery failed to take off because it DID NOT GET LAND. The company was planning to invest $6 billion in the refinery, which at the time of its announcement was the biggest FDI for the year. The company is also suffering a similar fate in Odisha, where it has also not received land. Apparently, Posco had promised to set up a 12-million-tonne refinery in the country by bringing in the biggest FDI by any company of $12 billion. Announced in 2005, the company could never get hold of its land. Posco is not the only company that is facing several bureaucratic hurdles. World Bank ranks India 132nd for doing business. The country ranks 173rd in terms of starting a business and 182nd in getting permits and enforcing them. [Goanet] Handling heart attacks - thegoan.net
Handling heart attacks A Goan company comes out with the smallest ECG heart monitor that run on mobiles Bharati Pawaskar / The Goan 20 July 2013 There is good news for heart patients in Goa. A Goan technology company, Kallows Engineering, has recently released two innovative products in the Indian medicine market – ‘ultra-portable heart monitors that run on mobiles or tablets. They will now be able to transmit their live ECG of to the cardiologist’s smartphone from anywhere in the world. “We expect these products to revolutionise the portable ECG monitor market as they provide several key advances over current ECG monitors,” says Gajanan Nagarsekar, Managing Director of Kallows whose idea was to save lives by creating something ultra-portable and seamless in the practical world.Patents for Kallows products (a 3-lead ECG monitor called MobMon 3.0 and a 12-lead ECG monitor called MobMon 12.0) may be the world’s smallest ECG monitors of their kind and patents for them are covered for in India and USA. They fit in the palm of the hand and also have a pulse oximeter for measuring blood oxygen levels. 12-lead ECG with SpO2 (pulse Oximeter) – record, store, review and transfer all functions very seamlessly through an Android application. This has been designed by Kallows employees in Goa.“Our products do not require AC line power as they are battery operated, and do not require a special ECG strip printer or paper (as the ECG signals can be printed with any PC printer). However, the revolutionary feature is the ability to send the patient’s ECG to a remote physician by ringing his mobile and displaying a live feed thereon,” shares Kevin S Kreger, Director and Chief Technology Officer for Kallows, currently in Goa. The remote viewing of the patient’s ECG provides lifesaving minutes. In addition to giving a cardiologist, the convenience of viewing the patient’s ECG remotely, the MobMon alerts the doctor to the patient’s condition, such as if he is suffering a heart attack while the patient is still in the hands of the first responder. Typically, the patient may be visiting his general practitioner (GP), attended by an ambulance technician, or at hospital’s emergency room. In these situations there may not be a cardiologist available so the patient’s ECG can be immediately sent to a cardiologist for diagnosis. The cardiologist from any corner of the world can instruct whoever is attending the patient to administer treatment immediately, such as a clot busting agent or the like. “We expect this feature to be a key wherever a cardiologist is not immediately available, especially in rural areas. Thus, our lifesaving product could be widely used by GPs, ambulances, and emergency rooms,” says Kreger who has a BS (EE), MS (EE), Juris Doctorate (Patent Law) to his credit along with 25 years of experience working in the field of Digital Signal Processing applied to electronic hardware, firmware and software programming. “My American partner Kreger has worked with some prestigious names in the USA such as GE Medical Systems, Allen Bradley (now Rockwell Automation), Siemens and has mentored and consulted for several advanced engineering projects,” informs Nagarsekar who along with Kreger hail from GE Healthcare Technologies. “Kallows was founded in Goa in 2007. We began operations by providing consulting services for National Institute of Oceanography (NIO),” discloses Nagarsekar who himself is BE (ETC), MTech (Biomedical) and MS (EE) with six years of experience in product and research. Nagarsekar has worked with Wipro GE Medical Systems (in India and USA), University of California at San Diego and University of Wisconsin at Miwaukee. Kallows team worked with local engineering college, to train a team of final year engineers in programming applications (‘apps’) for smartphones. As an early mover in mobile apps Kallows began planning for the expansion of the mobile medical app marketplace. These efforts were recognised at the Wisconsin Governor’s Business Plan Competition 2011 to bag the second place in the ‘Information Technology’ category for medical products in the US, which landed an early investment bid from a Goan investor in 2012. The pricing is Rs 15,000 which is utilised in saving a life and giving a lot less stress to a Cardiologist. The Goa government is in process to initiate a feasibility study on these user friendly products since April 2013. The company is seeking potential buyers in hospitals, ambulance companies, government for rural primary health centres and district hospital connect, doctors and chronic heart patients.“We are currently seeking more interested investors to raise money for marketing and sales of these products in India. We will soon move to USA once we receive regulatory approval from US FDA,” concludes Nagarsekar.

Re: [Goanet] IS THE PRESS IN GOA GAGGED AND CAGED?
Of all the people, Aires should be last one to comment on the media in Goa. He keeps on using it successfully to meet his own purpose and utility. He takes the slightest opportunity to make his views known on all available media outlets, be it print, electronic or web. He has been cosy with editors and journalists as much as he's been cosy with politicians. He has his bread buttered on both sides. The media worldwide has its faults as shown by the Murdoch affair in UK and many cases in US and in India. The media is a multi-fangled monster and it doesn't feed on just few things. In this age, making money has become a prime duty of many news outlets. The missionary zeal of media as seen in olden days has given way to new paths. It's an unhealthy trend to charge for interviews but, I suppose, only the gullible and financially weak media outlets are employing such tactics. The established and recognized media will fear going into such a direction. Floriano was gushing with pride for having been interviewed by Niz Goenkar as he claimed he's never been interviewed on TV by any recognized TV stations in Goa. Tell me in all frankness Floriano if getting interview by Niz Goenkar is something to shout about? I wanted to say this earlier but I felt it would taken as personal because of my ongoing tussle with the site which has claimed it has expelled me, as if I was a member of the site for which I sent articles that were either published elsewhere or distributed also to other websites. I felt sorry for you Floriano that you were at times lectured and had to listen patiently to the rambling of the interviewer. It was less jarring, to use a mild word, than the interview the same Menino Sir took of Aires. If one justaposes both interviews I come to the conclusion that the so-called journalist is out of depth on such a media platform. I know TV as I have done a course in TV at Toronto's Humber College and have done some work at my place of work. Floriano, you beef is with serious channels then I must say that I haven't taken a closer look at those operating in Goa. As for the print, it's a fact that some of newspapers and mags are owned by mining houses or high net-worth businessmen. Those like Mathany, Erasmo de Sequeira and Surendra Furtado failed to sustain their print publications. I doubt if at least one daily in Goa is making money or if the new weekly, The Goan on Saturday, will break even for a very long time. As you were very close to Goan Observer at one time, you should know Floriano. If GO is making money I am not sure but rumours have it that it has supported from at least one industralist. The media vs politicians battle will never end. Ultimately, the reading public is the good and the judgements that come out from them is often unbalanced and nonconsistent. The media is a necessary evil and those in the public space like you must adjust or neglect it. Eugene
[Goanet] Roland Francis: The Bombay Tiatr - Stray Thoughts of a Toronto Goan
Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter, 21 Jul. 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk Full Text: It was around ten that humid morning and much of the perspiring Goan population of Byculla was streaming into the wide gates of the magnificent Gloria Church for the Sunday high mass. Ladies were in their Sunday best, some of them with hats, gloves and stockings but all of them in gloves covering their delicate and often masala-grinding hands. The men in their starched shirts and cotton light summer jackets lagged behind, for the purpose of an exit route should the priest repeat his tendency to a long and boring sermon. Around the corner of the church outside a small bookstore selling rosaries, medals, Konkani literature, song books and of course tiatr tickets, was Peter Fernandes the owner. Although this was his peak business time he was more interested in chatting with his favorite actor Robin Vaz. A six footer and handsome to boot, Robin was lounging near the church not so much to watch the fine Goan ladies and men but to shadow the more plebeian crowd that followed - the domestics, the nearby Mazagon Dock and Port Trust workers families and the simple people who resided in the nearby warrens of the massive BIT Blocks, locally called 'cement chawls'. For it was these folks who would populate his 'Agente Monteiro' play that was to debut in the St. Mary's school hall only a few bus stops away. He was not afraid of a lack of patrons. He was confident of his popularity and the crowds that he could draw ever since he came onto the Konkani stage popularizing the mandos through a dance form. He popularized the role of a kunbi dancer more than an actor. If there was any doubt about the crowds, it would be dispelled by a star cast of Bombay's best tiatrists. Robin Vaz was every tiatrist's friend and they were keen on supporting him. The community was closed knit and prey to two big flaws. They drank to excess and then some. The other was a complete lack of interest in the revenue their plays generated. They could have been rich men but merely eked out a living one month to another, mostly because they let the organizers, and agents hit them in the pockets. They were happy with one for the love, and none for the money. The church crowds were exiting and Robin's purpose was for this very moment. They were going to talk about the evening's play and he wanted to know what they wanted for the intermission fillers - the skits, the songs, the music of the live bands, the jokes on Bandodkar and the recent liberation. That was what would make or break the play, not the play itself. Everybody had an opinion, but one thing came out clearly; with such a star cast they wanted the songs and jokes repeated and they wanted to see Robin Vaz dance. That was unanimous. Robin was happy, having heard what he came for and he would do as they wished. The talent and versatility of the tiatrists in Bombay was a thing of beauty. So were the bands that accompanied them. They barely had any rehearsals, the actor hardly learned the script, the musicians never got to practice the notes. But no matter what, these men were maestros in their own calling. Some players of the band were known to even international musicians passing through Bombay. The tiatr organizers were lucky to book them from their hang-out near Alfred Restaurant in Dhobitalao, often for a pittance. It was sunset now and Robin Vaz along with a few of the performers were exiting their watering place at Monteiro's just outside the venue where they were downing drinks the past hour. It was already ten minutes past starting time and they were primed for the stage and eager to give their best. Robin was going to be Agente Monteiro himself, the big bad Paclo in whose unkind hands would rest the fate of any Indian trouble makers within Goa and at the end of whose revolver barrel would lie the lives of many 'satyagrahis' (freedom fighters) entering Goa for nefarious purposes from the Portuguese point of view. He was meant to be a villain to the pro-Indians in the crowd and a hero to the pro-Portuguese. Robin had to fill in both roles and he outdid himself. So did the rest of the cast, every last man and woman of them. At the end, they clapped, stomped, yelled and whistled. The auditorium shook and old Fr Bonifacio Dias, the kindly Jesuit tiatr-loving priest under whose favor the hall was given out, muttered under his breath about talking to the tiatrists not to drink and excel as much the next time, it was not good for the building. He knew that kindness and mercy, forgiveness and excellence, for a Goan, all emanated from a bottle. ===
Re: [Goanet] IS THE PRESS IN GOA GAGGED AND CAGED?
I forgot to add in my last post that Aires is not making a statement but rather asking a question. I am surprised Aires doesn't know the answer to his own question or is he just fishing? Unfortunate that the media outlets as private businesses are out of bound for Aires much-use weapon, RTI. Aires has been given wide space in magazines with interviews and there's hardly a day when his name doesn't appear in the news pages of Goan newspapers. His contributions to Niz Goenkar are comparatively three times more than any other contributor to the site. Some of his contributions are just news bits but come under the articles category. For a sample, the piece, CCP COFFERS EMPTY BUT MAYOR WANTS A PLUSH NEW CAR by Adv. Aires Rodrigues is 246-word long, including the headline and his byline. The earlier one, EXTENDING SCHOOL TIMINGS A VERY FAULTY DECISION by Adv. Aires Rodrigues, is 236-word long, including the headline and his byline. Aires, as is his wont, fires with all guns blazing and in every direction. One thing for sure, he doesn't fire away at some of the critical comments against him on the Niz Goenkar or other websites. In a way, I think that's good because it saves him from getting into a confrontational stance with commentators who can be very nasty and insulting, induling often in name-calling. As we know some of them use pseudonyms and when questioned their answers are that that names don't matter what the written stuff. It's a nice escapist route. Wasn't it the main reason why Alina Saldanha was reluctant to give an interview to NG though she agreed later on but the NG team couldn't make it to her office the second time as the car the team was travelling in with an accident, according to Menino Sir. She was right in pointing out her displeasure for the editor to let in insulting words against her and Mathany. Defending as freedom of expression doesn't cut it. I moderated list needs to adhere to rules and regulations, as used by moderated sites. Would the site allow insulting words against the editor? If so, let me know and I will get someone to do so. I won't do for personal reasons. The interviews are an insult to the art of interviewing and also falls far short of standard in quality of presentation and delivery. In the interview with Aires, Menino Sir is seeing running his nose twice and that too without the use of tissue or handkerchief. In the interview with Florianobab, Menino Sir inserts finger in his ear and then rubs whatever stuff he got from his ear between his two fingers. It shows poor editing. No excuses, please. Florianobab let it pass first time when Menino Sir said Parrikar was RSS man and not a Goan but told his interviewer that one can be RSS and also a Goan. Floriano forcefully insisted that Parrikar is a Goan. Goanetters can judge for themselves. I expect a barrage of criticism on NG. where some use two or maybe more email ids. If those on this forum want to indulge in media criticism, I am game for it. But also take a good look at some of the websites and see if these critics can find how good these sites are. As in the rest of the world, India also has good media watchdog sites. One Goa-based media watchdog site had to close down because of legal threats from some newspaper bosses or their editors. It was unfortunate but that's reality. It's a wrap. Eugene Correia

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 17th Sunday of the Year
17-Jul-2013 Dear Friend, As believers we are all aware of the need of prayer as well as the importance of prayer in our lives. Yet many find it difficult to pray and there are moments in our lives when we wonder whether prayer makes any difference at all. It is interesting to note that even secular science is admitting the growing importance of prayer and its impact on human life. How then should we pray? The only way we learn to pray is by praying! Have a prayer-filled weekend bringing our life into prayer and prayer into our life! Fr. Jude Sunday Reflections: 17th Sunday of the Year: Pray as you are and pray as you believe! 28-Jul-2013 Readings: Genesis 18: 20-32Colossians 2: 12-14Luke 11: 1-13 The first reading introduces us to Abraham as he intercedes with God for the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. What strikes us immediately is the tone of the conversation between Abraham and God. It certainly implies a relationship. Firstly, we see Abraham pleading not for himself but for the needs of others. Secondly, what comes across through the reading is the belief that good people matter and have a tremendous influence on others. Thirdly, we see that Abraham perseveres in his pleading with the Lord. The point of the passage is not that prayer changes God but rather that prayer gives us a share in His power and definitely, that prayer changes us so that we can accept whatever is God's will for us. Prayer -Sharing in God's Power Jim Johnson was given the job of saving a failing hotel. Other managers had tried, but unsuccessfully. The hotel was in a now-or-never situation. Jim decided to try something different. Each night he drove to the top of a hill overlooking the hotel and the city. He parked his car and sat there for the next 20 minutes praying. Jim prayed for the hotel guests, relaxing behind the lighted windows. He prayed for the hotel employees and for their families. He prayed for the people, who did business with the hotel. Finally, he prayed for the city and its people. Night after night, Jim drove to the top of the hill, parked his car and prayed the same prayer. Soon the situation at the hotel started to improve. A new confidence radiated from its employees. A new warmth welcomed and greeted each new guest. A new spirit permeated its operation. The hotel experienced a remarkable rebirth thanks to the nightly prayer of Jim Johnson. Norman Vincent Peale The Gospel of today has three sections, all dealing with prayer. While the first part deals with the prayer 'The Our Father', the other two sections illustrate the attitude and dispositions for prayer. The model prayer of Jesus starts with calling God 'Father', which was something unique that Jesus could say and which we have the privilege to say in and through Jesus. Our prayer becomes like Jesus' when we can call God our 'Abba', 'Papa', 'Dada', 'Pai', the term of endearment that we use at home. Next, the model prayer reminds us of what should be our priorities. Too often our prayer is individualistic, focused on 'I', 'myself'. In stead the 'Our Father' starts with focusing on God: Holy be Your Name, Your Kingdom come! The perfect form of prayer is praise, and working for the His Kingdom every day. In the second part Jesus turns to asking for human needs and here too the sequence is noteworthy. It starts with, Give us this day our daily bread. We ask not only for ourselves but for others as well. For the Israelites, the bread given by Yahweh was never eaten alone but always in community, food was for sharing. We ask for 'daily bread' not all the quota for a life time! Our asking every day keeps us humble enough to realize we cannot manage by ourselves and we need God every day of our life. The daily bread implied not only the physical food we need but also the spiritual nourishment provided by prayer. The last part of the 'Our Father' reminds us that just as we need physical and spiritual nourishment we also need God's mercy and forgiveness, because, in spite of our best intentions and promises, we falter often in life. 'Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us', reminds us that we show our own acceptance of God's forgiveness when we forgive others. The final petition, 'Do not bring us to the test but deliver us from all evil', does not imply that God tempts us rather we are asking not to be tested beyond our limit. Saints are not those who are never tempted but who in spite of temptations found their strength in God. I was waiting for you to call on me! The boy walked along the ocean shore trying not to stray. He looked up to his father saying, Dad, I want to play. His father looked upon him, with love showing in his eyes. Do what you want to, my son but do not leave my side. I would never leave you Daddy, I love you way too much. But the boy took a step away, out of his father's range of touch. He walked through the surf, the

If so, does the Indian Constitution allow discrimination on the basis of Race against non-citizens? Or Was Gen Candeth just a racist? Or ...are we all racists and don't own up to it? jc The Indian Constitution itself is 'racist', since it grants a separate, and protective, status to Anglo-Indians, a category that can only be described as being constructed on 'racist', or at least 'ethnicist' terms since it is based on particular lineage, in casu 'European descent'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Indian It would not surprise me if Jose Colaco himself belonged to that category. 'Racism-in-reverse', especially towards 'whites' is a very complex and little discussed issue. But ever since the XVth century and the age of the discoveries, the 'white race' has not only considered itself superior but has also been widely considered as such by other, and I am not certain it happened entirely by its own doing. By now, the sceptered race (*) is slowly losing its shine, and I have witnessed myself this steady erosion of status in India, which is possibly influenced by an influx in large numbers of people perceived as 'white trash' - usually of Slavic origin. (I remember reading an article on the phenomenon, in Africa, but can't find it back). Anyway, to go back to General Candeth, he probably was merely going by the customs of his time: 'you do not touch whites'. Cheers from happy, multicultural Oslo (not always) p+5-3D! Re: [Goanet] IS THE PRESS IN GOA GAGGED AND CAGED?
Frederick FN Noronha wrote in response to George Pinto: the new-found expertise that the expat Goan seem to have in all subjects under the Goa sun frightens me sometimes FN, What is really frightening is when journalist in Goa only have the courage to write about 1961 and thereabouts. The bravest write about mining in the 1970's. No journalist has the courage to write about the environmental destruction of today. No journalist writes about the hundreds of million of dollars of lost revenue from mining. No one writes about the horrendously erratic supply of electricity and water. No journalist writes about corruption. Worst of all, no one writes of the lack of a plan for the future. I do not blame these journalist. The cold fact is even if they do chose to write about the present, they will not get their work published as the owners of the media are the very people debauching the society. Journalist have been put on notice that if they expose anything that the owners do not want exposed, the journalist will be be blacklisted. I find it really disgusting when someone outside Goa points out to the abnormalities in Goa and those in Goa respond with, Ooooh! those outside Goa think they are the experts. My retort is that some journalist in Goa have decided to take the easy road and become the experts of 1961 and the past. What they specialize in, is writing about 'traditional' occupations that are unsustainable. Making salt, taping coconut trees for heavens sake, growing rice. These occupations, just like making cow patties to burn, are occupations for the illiterate. Goans are blessed with intelligence. And those that are educated realise that they have to take their education and brains outside Goa if they are to benefit from both. It is frightening, very frightening, when the journalist in Goa just cannot report things the way they are today. Mervyn
Re: [Goanet] Was Candeth a racist?
Jose, I don't think so. No more than a lowly pawn in the Indian strategy. I met the man himself, rather percursorily, just a couple of times; was quite an affable, militarilly brusque, chap. But I have closely interacted with a few of his close relatives my impressions are derived from those associations. However, the veritable b-d (yes, very much a one both, naturally characteristically), Handoo, Nehru's natural half-brother, was very much a misenthrope; outwardly suave but, indeed, very bitterly anti- many things, primarilly Christians. He had the absolute overiding powers over the military administrators. General Kandeth's appointment, like A.V. Marshal Pinto's, to spearhead the invasion, conquest subsequent annexation of Goa, also euphimistically called 'Operation Vijay', was motivated by Nehru's contention that being Catholics, they would successfully hoodwink the gullible Goans, largely pertaining the servile ABC echelons. To these, perhaps unwitting, Catholic pawns was later on added Albano Couto, after a diligent search of the Civil Services' cadres. A few other minor ranks as well. In such machiavellian set up, it has been established (total declassification of relevant data will further confirm facts) that the dram-happy/illusioned Nehru was abetted assisted by Valerian Gracias Frank Moraes, both fellow inbibing boon companions. (From among many other such, often quixotic war-councils held in such venues as the BCC, resulted Salazar's frustrating fiasco in rushing reinforcements to the insignificant Goan garrison through the Suez.) My info comes from impeccable, many of them departed, sources which I will disclose in a chapter or two of a planned expose I am, albeit sluggihly, working upon. Re: [Goanet] IS THE PRESS IN GOA GAGGED AND CAGED?
Eugene is on Target that Aires has been able to use some media outlets successfully. In most instances, at least one of those media outlets does blanket-censor criticism of Aires and his tactics. BTW: Does Eugene not do the same thing? Even so, I am not so sure that Aires 'should be the last one to comment on the media in Goa'. Why? Does he not have the right to Free Speech? Unlike Eugene, I am happy for Floriano. If the interview with Niz Goencar made Floriano happy, I am happy too. Floriano is as good a friend genuine a person as one can get. And so what IF a little (figuratively) Caldo Verde interview made Floriano happy? Did he need a Mughlai Chicken interview to impress Eugene or anyone else? I am delighted to learn about the Humber College course. Wonder if the course included a segment on Basic Principles of Ethics in Journalism? jc On 21 July 2013 06:17, Eugene Correia eugene.corr...@gmail.com wrote: Of all the people, Aires should be last one to comment on the media in Goa. Floriano was gushing with pride for having been interviewed by Niz Goenkar as he claimed he's never been interviewed on TV by any recognized TV stations in Goa. Tell me in all frankness Floriano if getting interview by Niz Goenkar is something to shout about? I know TV as I have done a course in TV at Toronto's Humber College and have done some work at my place of work.

[Goanet] Amartya Sen: India's dirty fighter
Manuel Tavers writes: In hind side, any rational person who has studied India post independence can point out where the country has gone off the rails. The pertinent question to raise is, how can we (Indians) as a nation try and correct the course that is and surely will bring the destruction of the country. Successive governments have failed to pursue policies which are prudent and will lead to a more just and happier society. Yes, successive governments have failed. But it is not only the politicians but also the various intellectuals, analysts, etc. It is in this context; Prof Sen should tell us who exactly are these groups. I think that those responsible for the problem can be part of the solution only if they genuinely accept that they have made mistakes in the past. Eugene Correa writes: While Barad and those like him slept, Sen had undisturbed time to write the books. Should I say anything else? The slept remark is really obnoxious and completely uncalled for. Yes, Prof Sen had undisturbed time to write the books, and make a living of it. However, in his books, did he write anything about the lack of hygiene? And did he offer any solutions for it? There are the issues I would like Eugene to say on. Best regards, U. G. Barad
[Goanet] Migration into Goa creates 26 new towns out of Goa's villages -thegoan.net
Migration into the state creates 26 new ‘towns’ out of Goa’s villagesAjay Thakur I The Goan ,Panjim20 July 2013Pic Credit: Sagun Gawade“The apprehension is that Goans will become an alienated microscopic minority within their own state.” Politics apart, Goa Government’s worry in Memorandum on Special Status given by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh five weeks ago is not quite unfounded. Census 2011 has made a startling observation. There are twenty six new ‘census’ towns that have emerged over the last decade. Goa has not been urbanised but its’ villages have become urban.Check this. While traditionally tourism dependent villages like Calangute and Candolim turned into urbanised census towns a decade ago, new villages even in remote parts of Goa are turning into non-agriculture dependent economies. Away from the mainstream, Ponda Taluka has silently emerged as an urban centre with once agrarian societies shifting away to non-agricultural pursuits. Villages like Khandola, Orgao, Madkai, Priol, Borim and Usgao emerging as new census towns signals this new trend.“This shift can be safely attributed to the fact that more of the population is getting into non-agricultural activities”, explains Dr Nandkumar Sawant, Associate Professor of Geography, Chowgule College. Dr Sawant, who is considered an authority on migration studies into Goa and an expert analyst closely associated with Directorate of Census Operations Goa further explains that this trend is purely due to migration. “With arrival of people with new skillsets into the towns, there is an automatic spillover into the neighbouring villages. Consequently population increases, agricultural traditions dilute as main occupation and urbanisation occurs”, explains Dr Kamat.Interestingly, while migration elsewhere may have led to the creation of more slums in Goa, it has remained restricted to municipal limits majorly. The villages simply had the local populace being replaced by the migrants. “Look at Davorlim, which is outside Margao. There rentals are cheap, so more of the lower strata find it convenient to live there. There are more chances of talking to someone in Hindi there than Konkani”, points out Dr. Sawant. Margao’s economical lure has consequently made census towns out of Raia, Nuvem and Verna. Shockingly, South Goa’s rice bowl Curtorim is also a census town due to a shift away from agriculture.Census 2001 had shown that Goa’s population had a fourteen percent growth of migration into the state since the last census in 1991. Statisticians at the Registrar of Census Operations state that the worry in the villages is that the original identity of the villages will cease to exist. “Calangute could well be the benchmark of the way we are heading”, says Calangute MLA Michael Lobo. “From Nepalese manning shacks and security posts to Mumbaikars and Delhiwallahs running restaurants and clubs, cosmopolitisation has changed our identity,”Lobo rues. And he isn’t wrong with 58 of Goa’s 228 villages turning into towns and losing their character, Goa is fast turning away from its old charming self to an aggressive new metropolis.9 LAKH URBAN GOANS, 5.5 LAKHS RURAL GOANS OVER 2 LAKH URBAN HOMES, JUST OVER 1 LAKH RURAL HOMES 10 % OF POPULATION MIGRANTS IN 2001 20 % OF POPULATION MIGRANTS IN 2011 Rural households: 1.3 lakhs Urban households: 2.2 lakhs Rural population: 5.5 lakhs Urban population: 9.1 lakhs Census towns born between 2001 – 2011: 26 Villages that turned census towns: 58 Migrant population in 2001: 1.2 lakhs Percentage of Goa’s total population: 10% Goa’s migrant population in 2011:2.9 lakhs Percentage of Goa’s total population: 20% Top three states that send migrants to Goa: Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh Previous StoryHow to be a Goan in 8 steps?Next Story
