[Goanet-News] AT PORVORIM THIS WEEK: THE MAGIC OF SOUND FROM ANOTHER CENTURY ...
Acoustics is the science of sound. Goa's old churches were so designed so as to ensure the right balance between 'sound' and 'silence', thus enabling a holy resonance in the worship space. A close inspection of the architectural proportions, wall contents and surface treatments, use of wood and coupled space, provision for ventilation, light and thermal comfort, in the old churches of Goa evoke awe and admiration for the builders of these churches. They so wisely fine-tuned the acoustical, visual and the thermal aesthetics in and around a church, to give a beholder and a worshiper an optimized experience. This uncommon wisdom of the past needs to be explored if we are serious about preserving, conserving and restoring the 'aura' of our old heritage churches in Goa and elsewhere. Attend a talk and discussion on the Dynamics of a Sound Sacred Experience in the Old Churches of Goa at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR), Alto Porvorim on Thurday, September 19, 2013 at 5.30 pm. He has done his doctoral studies on 'Acoustics of Worship Spaces' at the University of Nagpur, India, and is presently doing his post-doctoral research on 'Conservation and Restoration of Acoustical Heritage at Worship Spaces' with the University of Porto, Portugal. He has presented research papers in journals and in proceedings of international congresses at Madrid, Shanghai, Ottawa, Edinburgh, Sydney, Osaka, Rachol and Chennai. At present, he is a conservation scientist on the restoration project of the Nossa Senhora do Pilar church and is simultaneously designing a syllabus for a new subject, 'Theology of Acoustics for Worship' to be taught at the Theology College, Pilar. [Goanet] Condolences to the Family on the Sad Demise of Bernadette De Sa
Bernadette De Sa known as Aunty Benny, died on 4 September 2013 in England. My condolences to the family members many of whom are from Moira. I got the information from the following letter from her niece Linette Goes nee D'Souza which I will take the liberty to reproduce below. My dad's sister Bernadette De Sa died on 4th Sept here in UK. Her house is in Calizor as she was married to late Joseph De Sa. They used to call their house Padreger. My Mum's mother Maria Angelica De Sa was the daughter from this same house where my Dad's sister Aunty Benny got married, hence the double relationship with Mervyn Maciel as he is the nephew of that De Sa house. In July this year my Dad's youngest brother's wife died in Portugal and got cremated there Aunty Luiza. Aunty Benny was in Goa staying at Renat's house the year my mum died as I had flown back with her and my youngest daughter Chloe who was 3 months at that time. Aunty Bennie's photo came on goanvoiceuk this week on Sept 10th. Linette and fly. -- Augusto Pinto 40, Novo Portugal Moira, Bardez Goa, India E pinto...@gmail.com P 0832-2470336 M 9881126350

[Goanet] Bhov Xrest Filipe Neri Ferrao: Gonvllik Chitt
A casual remark which Ben Antao made about Konkani writing style, reminded me about a little booklet that has been distributed by the Goan Archdiocese to probably every Catholic home in Goa not too long ago for Rs 10/ although I doubt very many have read this little tome and for good reason. This booklet, a pastoral letter, has been sent ahead of the First National Convention of Small Christian Communities (SCCs) scheduled to be held in front of the Basilica of Bom Jesu, Old Goa from 19 to 21 November 2013. The SCC is the big thing of the Church in recent times. The cover page reads as follows: Lhan Kristi Somudai: Priti - Sevechea Ekcharan Bhavartheak Govai / Small Christian Communitites: Communion of Faith in Love, Gonvllik Chitt, Gonvllik Voros 2013 - 2014, Bhov Xrest Filipe Neri Ferrao: Goy - Damanvchea Arsebispachi. I don't really want to comment about the idea of SCCs which is the theme of this bilingual Pastoral Letter but I want to comment on the style of Konkani and the alleged 'Approved English version' of the text. I'll do this by simply copying a couple of Konkani paragraphs and then the alleged English translation and allow you to compare both of them. 2. Lhan Kristi Somudai Kiteak? i. 1960 dosokant, Yves Congar Dominikan Sonsthechea mottvaxian, aplea kallachea loka lagin uloun mhonnlolem: Povitr Sobhechi bandavoll - kednam-kednam tich Povitr Sobah - ticho khol ani jivo ghutth lipoita tosli addkholl zata: ho gutth fokot thollak mellunk - vo portun mellunk xokta. Ani ho 'tholl' kitem tem som'zaun diunk, Lay People in the Church - hea pustokant, Lhan Kristi Somuday ho gutth sorolllponnan ani sadheponnan jiyeunk mellta tosle Povitr Sobheche lhan khondd mhonn to boroita. ii. Khorem mhollear, nizache LKS 'sonvsarant sorg' ghoddun haddunk soeg ditat. ... Now for all of you who understood those paras, compare it with the alleged English translation: 2. Why Small Christian Communities at all? i, Way back in the 1960s, the Dominican theologian Yves Congar, speaking to his contemporaries, had said: The Church's machinery, sometimes the very institution, is a barrier obscuring her deep and living mystery, which they can find, or find again, only from below. And to explain the term 'below', he writes in his book 'Lay People in the Church', that Small Christian Communities are little church cells wherein the mystery is lived directly and with great simplicity. ii. Our God is a Trinitarian God and, in the process of creating humankind, he shared his Trinitarian Life with us. This means that we have a spark of God's life within us. We are therefore relational by nature. Small Christian Communities, in the manner the Church in India is promoting them, are an excellent means to promote relationships among people in their neighbourhoods, thus giving expression to the divilne nature within them. Actually, genuine SCCs help create 'heaven on earth'. Those of you who may be wondering why I have been saying 'alleged English translation' may by now understand what I mean. If one compares the two versions it is very apparent that it is the English version which is the original while the Konkani version is the translation. One reason why people are horrified by the 'Padri Bhas' of the Catholic Church is that it is first thought out in English and then there is a struggle to translate it into Konkani. Thus one gets a Konkani which is stilted and unnatural, and which tries to express itself in the syntax of a foreign language rather than its own. And at the level of word building, where an unfamiliar concept would have been easier to borrow from the English, it is first translated into Sanskrit or Marathi and then imported into Konkani, thus forcing the reader to read a translation of a translation. Any comments, especially from votaries of Romi Konkani, although others are also welcome to give their two paisa worth? [Goanet] The Introduction to Bridge Session on September 14
The introduction to bridge session given by Amaresh Deshpande at Associacao Academica de Moira was quite an engrossing one attended by about 20 enthusiasts of all ages, including four kids, the youngest of which were Jefferey D'Souza's 13 year old twins Joel and Jane. Amaresh gave a lucid explanation of some important concepts of play and then proceeded to give the participants small mental exercises which they then proceeded to solve. The time was too little to actually try out a full game but I think everyone's appetite was whetted by the presentation. Bridge like chess is a game designed to help the brain understand some mathematical concepts intuitively so hopefully it may catch on. Amaresh took the email ids of the participants and said he would contact us later to find out if we would be interested in learning an introductory variety of Bridge called 'Mini-Bridge'. Maybe other village clubs could also contact him amaresh.deshpande@gmail.comand find out if he could help introduce the game to them. -- Augusto Pinto 40, Novo Portugal Moira, Bardez Goa, India E pinto...@gmail.com P 0832-2470336 M 9881126350
Re: [Goanet] Death penalty for Nirbaya`s accused
The dramatised version of this will appear on Sony channel's 'Crime Patrol' on 21st September at 11pm IST. Seb From: Nelson Lopes nellope...@gmail.com To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: [Goanet] Death penalty for Nirbaya`s accused Message-ID: cajp2+q3eusdrbwevacz6po5rksuo_vdl__ebc6daq2vdjh-...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Death penalty in Nirbaya/jyoti case The gruesome gang rape and murder of a promising life and career of a young girl had shocked the Nation. The background of the family and how she was educated by the parents at a great personal sacrifice merits sympathy and considerations, She was a great hope and role model for the other siblings .Besides she nursed legitimate aspirations for upward, vertical movement in society and life. The rapist were merciless and need no mercy. It is the rarest of rare cases that deserved the capital punishment .It was cold blooded , premeditated, gruesome murder that snuffed out the life of the victim, who dreamt great future The case aroused the Nation like never before. The Parliament was forced to take note of mass protestations that reached a feverish pitch and resonated with high decibels, The case forced change in laws connected with rapes. Verma Committee report suggested far reaching consequences to the accused there was no other case of like that reached every home, through mass media, radio, newspapers et, al. it refused to die in spite of all promises for tough action. The youth bore the brunt of police brutality and undue use of force. The matter was pursued with vigour, dogged determination and never allowed to die from people consciousness The Nation had enough of lethargy at all levels, be it police, judiciary and executive. The Parliament tried to assuage the feelings of mass uprising against this monster of brutalising women , children of all ages with impunity Four of the convicts have been rightly handed over the death penalty or capital punishment It soothes the anger, pain and agony not only of the parents, neighbours but Nation as a whole Nothing short of capital punishment would have satisfied, be it labelled as vengeance, deterrent or tooth for tooth. The accused had at least tears in their eyes. But the juvenile, who is left of the hook being a few months less than the age visualised. There is appeal to consider his intention, involvement and being the most brutal monster in committing the crime , There is growing anger, as to why his criminal act does not merit same punishment, Lowering the age of juveniles has been rejected legally, leaving to the discretion of the judges. Many nations have also lowered the age of juveniles offenders. It must be remembered that youth mature much earlier to day. Many Nations have abolished capital punishment, but that has not reduced such heinous crimes, forget about eliminating them In Arab countries., China the punishment is swift and harsh and yet the crimes continue to shock our senses. Sure it will serve as the deterrent and stop many such crimes in its track. Only there will no statistics of crimes deterred by this judgement. Rapes will continue, but actions are more certain and laws made more less impervious. The colour of political tinge in awarding death sentences to four accused is the defence for those representing the criminals and their in ability to take their clients off the gallows They were given all the facilities to defend their crimes This particular case has been followed by greatest number of people ever n India and abroad and the conclusions, certainly will ring satisfaction in the hearts and minds of true human beings. It is true that many other pending cases of rapes, murder, gang rapes of women and innocent children are mere statistics They have not received such publicity, sympathy, and continuous coverage . As usual convictions of similar cases are less than 24% and only a fraction of cases against women get reported The stigma attached to the victim of rapes is now being less intense and public supports openly such victims and are even willing to rehabilitate them. Life does not end with rape Nirbaya`s last wishes were to burn all rapist alive, it is certain that her soul will rest in peace Nelson Lopes Chinchinim

It is spanking clean. I travel a lot to Europe, America and even Far east. Its not common to see a metro akin to that in Dubai and the people travelling are to a large extent Indians, Pakis etc. Here we are talking about behavioural patterns of our people. If we can conform to cleanliness there, why can't we do so here? If fines are the only solution to tidy clean living, maybe the government should impose them. [Goanet] Pranab speaks on economy, takes a dig at PC?
Kolkata: President Pranab Mukherjee did on Saturday what men in the highest office seldom do. Addressing the Bengal Chamber of Commerce (BCC), he kept aside his written speech to make observation on the Indian economy, but one which sounded like a clarification of the steps he had taken during his stint as Union Finance Minister. At the outset, Mukherjee pointed out he was breaking with convention, since Presidents normally do not address AGMs of business bodies. Pranab, said he had made an exception because of his 'love' for Kolkata and the BCC, the oldest business body in the country. 'The President does not have the privilege to air his views. The president of India is not a policymaker; but I will take this opportunity to air some of my observations about eh Indian economy,' he said. Without naming anyone, he said, 'In 2008-09, the GDP growth came down, and then there was improvement in 2009-10 and 2010-11. Now again there is a slump,' he said, adding that the world economy is yet to fully recover from the downturn. (Ref: TOI, Goa Edition, dated Sunday, 15, 2013, page 8.)

'I still belong to Roman Catholic religion. Mr.Sanches has no knowledge of his religion or else he would not throw vemon at me. He still clings to Roman life or Egyptian life and does not want to find the truth of God, Jesus or Motherhei Mary. Mary's life should be embedded in you. If you love Mary so much then preach to all the sons whose parents are lamented in the homes for aged. I shall give you a state award for this. If you love Mary so much then preach to those who abort their children. Preach to those who go in for a divorce. to those who go to court to settle their parent's property. To those who cheat the poor. we laugh at the believers but where is our role in the kingdom of God ? do we have a place ? I am not sitting in Judgement. I spoke to you on reality. It must have tickled you so you poured vemon at me. If cap fits you wear it or else throw it out.' My dear Ms Fernandes. Thank you for taking the time off from your busy evangelising schedule to mail me a five second sermon. Having never met you I am quite surprised that you so confidently state that I do not know my religion I still cling to Roman life or Egyptian life. How did you reach such an assumption? How come this sudden turn around when all this while you were so anti Catholic in your post. Why have you brought the Believers into this reply, is it because you are a part of this group? Venom! The only venom I see is in your post. The cap my dear is on your head not mine. What difference does it make to anybody if I am knowledgeable or not about my religion? I only Know that I am a Christian, which means 'Christ Like' I follow two commandments Love The Lord your God with all your Heart, all your Soul and all your strength Love your neighbour as yourself. I believe that Jesus set up the Catholic Church to carry on His Ministry and the Pope is infallible on matters of faith. Nobody ties me to the Catholic Church and I profess the Roman Catholic faith not out of blind adherence but Understanding. If I do not like their teaching I am free to leave. Even after meticulous investigation, I have still to found no reason to Disbelieve the teachings of the Catholic Church. God is so awesome, His works never cease to amaze me. This journey to Oneness with Our Creator never ends, and one is always learning. The first step is the realisation that I know nothing, and I am nothing. I will only know everything when I am one with my Creator. Since I know nothing who am I to preach to others, is it not the blind leading the blind? I repeat it is not our business to interfere in other people's lives. It is our duty to help if asked. Our help must always be positive and transparent. I do not know about Mother Mary's life being embedded in me as my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. To know Jesus you must know Mother Mary, no one knows Him Better. Please let me know your understanding of the position Mother Mary Holds in the Catholic Church. Please get that state award ready as you will find me most mornings at the Institute of Charity of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Asilo. Old age home Aldona. I live with your reality everyday. Everything you say is true but do you for one moment think this is a new phenomenon. The Old Testament says it all. Jesus faced it in His day. But He never judged 'who am I to judge you' nor condemned. We should live the New Testament not preach it. We can always discuss this further now that you know where I can be found most mornings. Ps: don't forget to bring that award it would look nice on the office table. God bless you today and everyday. [Goanet] GSRP's Plans Open for 2017
GSRP's Count-down towards 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly Elections. The seriousness with which GSRP has made the announcement, soon after 2012 Assembly Elections, that it is coming into the 2017 election fray in a big way with not less than 30 candidates, cannot be discounted. From day one, after the 2012 election results were declared, GSRP has been preparing for the big stride, for the first time, since it came into the political game of Goa in the year 2000, thirteen long years ago. What GSRP does not have to prepare is the 'SYSTEM OF GOVERNANCE' that it will follow on getting elected, or, the so called 'Election Manifesto'. These two important documents have been commissioned as ONE in the year 2005 in the name of 'THE ROAD MAP FOR GOA' , a PERMANENT document, which has made the Party to sit down and deliberate the pros and cons of providing for Goa's good governance, for it's extended prosperity and to bring back the lost lustre to it's good name that will resonate throughout the lenght and breadth of India and the world across. The Party considers this document as the 'document of a lifetime' because, not days, not months but many years of hard work has gone into it's preparation, so that Goa does not have to speculate what the government of this Party will do and not do, thereby eliminating the uncertainty that lies with the formation of every new government vis a vis the selection process of the CM and his CABINET members, the strength of this CABINET, the distribution of portfolios, even to the extent of fine-tuning the day that the Party's government will be fully in charge and efficiently operating [ which, by the way, will be the third day after the 'winning' election results have been declared]. Spared from the agony of preparing the above routine, what the Party lacks is a substantial grass-roots presence. Therefore, the Party has been concentrating on establishing this very important wing of political maneuvering. For any new Political Party, this is the most gigantic and daunting tasks of all, without which the electoral prospects are ruled out. For this grass-roots wing to take shape, it requires a hell of a lot of time, especially, in the absense of the Party's tag as a 'big spender'. GSRP intends to accomplish this through it's potent slogan - PPS - which stands for PEOPLE FOR POLITICAL SANITY. The reasoning that this Party goes by is that ' IF THE PEOPLE WHO WILL ULTIMATELY VOTE AND ELECT THE GOVERNMENT THAT WILL RUN THEIR EVERYDAY LIVES AND THE LIVES OF THEIR DEPENDENTS FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, THEY REQUIRE TO BE POLITICALLY SANE. GSRP is using this SLOGAN as the foundation stone on which to build it's grass-roots activism of networking. The hurdle that will make it difficult for the grass-roots activism of the Politically Sane people of Goa, Goans and Goa Lovers, has been eliminated by the very fact that the Party has shown it's seriousness in fielding not less than 30 candidates for the 2017 GLA Elections. Through this assurance, what the Party is telling the politically sane people of Goa is that 'SHOULD THEY WORK FOR THE PARTY'S VICTORY by making it their preferred choice, the Party can give the governance to Goa, Goans and Goa lovers exactly what has been promissed in the said ROAD MAP FOR GOA plus more, this more being the decisive steering of the Party affairs as according to the Articles 34, 38 and 41 of the Party's Constitution, which measures are considered to be the 'belt-tightening' measures that are required and be strictly enforced or implemented if Goa has to come out of it's 'living beyond it's means'. It is but natural that 'IF WE WANT CHANGE, WE NEED TO TOUCH IT to feel it. And there is no doubt whatsoever that GSRP means CHANGE. The question that now arises is: WHO ARE THOSE 30 CANDIDATES OF THE PARTY GOING TO BE?? To answer this question, a mere look at the executive set-up of the Party will show that most on the list, if not all, are above the retirement age. This Party is serious about Goa's welfare. It has readied the VEHICLE [ the Party], fit to move at any given time, itself being the DRIVER and maintenance crew. The only thing missing is the PASSENGERS who will take that good ride. And who should be those PASSENGERS? To answer this question, usually, any top of the form, innovative VEHICLE will be looking for moneyed PASSENGERS. It is not so in this case. This Vehicle will issue the Tickets to Goa's graduated YOUTHS, not at the reduced rate of half the price, but free of cost, provided that they are ready to embark at the point of emkarkation and alight at the point of desembarkation. These graduated YOUTHS could be lawyers, teachers, technocrats, architects, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs whose mind-set and clean outlook shall be respected more than their educational qualifications, religions and castes, as this PARTY believes that (1) religion is a private
[Goanet] CAT CHAIRMAN URGED TO SACK LEENA MEHENDALE AS MEMBER OF THE BOMBAY BENCH
Justice Syed Rafat Alam, the Chairman of Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has been urged to immediately sack Leena Mehendale as the member of the Bombay Bench of CAT. Justice Alam’s attention has been drawn that Leena Mehendale had falsely stated in her biodata which is on the CAT website that she had in 2010 obtained an LLB degree from Bombay University. Justice Alam has been informed that Bombay University officials had shockingly revealed that Leena Mehendale did not complete her law degree and consequently her claim was a patently false statement. From the mark sheets of the semesters she had appeared it can be seen that she had just struggled to scrape through with pass class in the papers she had answered. Pointing out that as per the University records, the results of the semesters she had appeared in 2008 and 2009 were surprisingly kept in reserve and only declared in 2010, Justice Alam has been told that it needs be probed whether Leena Mehendale had misused her official clout as then Additional Chief Secretary of Maharashtra to manipulate those results to her benefit and that her answer papers need to be now re-assessed. Justice Alam has been also informed that sources in the Maharashtra Secretariat had shockingly revealed that Leena Mehendale had also not obtained the required permission of the Maharashtra Government to enroll herself for the law studies and that such an act constitutes gross misconduct more so when it comes from a high ranking official who is now occupying the very high position as CAT member. Leena Mehendale after attending a CAT conference in Delhi on March 16th this year had flown directly to Goa on March 17th and stayed till the 20th having visited the controversial Sanatan Ashram at Ramnathi on 19th March. Justice Alam has been now asked to verify whether the expenses of that private visit to Goa were borne by her or paid by the Bombay Bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal of which she is a member. The conduct of Mrs. Mehendale more particularly the falsifying of her educational qualification would under no circumstances entitle her to continue in the high position as Member of the Central Administrative Tribunal. Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar has now selected Leena Mehendale to be Goa’s Chief Information Commissioner. What a disgrace. [Goanet] Sonia Faleiro on the Indian Gang Rapes
There is an interesting Sonia Faleiro article about the Sexual Molestation of women in India. http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/sep/13/india-gang-rape-attitudes-women-changing A few snippets: As a teenager growing up in Delhi I was regularly sexually harassed. I never made a complaint, though, because I never thought this harassment was out of the ordinary. I assumed that's how the world was. That all women, all over the world, were hounded in public. The media is now saturated with news of sexual assaults. And this ubiquity, activists say, suggests not so much as a dramatic increase in rapes, as a rise in the number of reported cases. This doesn't mean that women no longer suffer sexual violence. As many as 1,098 cases of rape have been reported to the Delhi police so far this year. COMMENT: This well written article really needs no additional comment as it speaks for itself. Even so, here are a few words from me: While women, all over the world, are at risk of violent attacks on their selves . because they are women, this apparent penchant among 'some' Indian men for Raping and Gang Raping women is utterly despicable. By Roland Francis: The Bucket List and Other Things - Stray Thoughts of a Toronto Goan Source: Goan Voice Daily Newsletter 15 Sep 2013 at www.goanvoice.org.uk For Indian standards, the trial, conviction and sentencing to death of the men who raped, severely beat up and killed an innocent young paramedic woman student while savaging her escort on a quiet night last December in New Delhi, was completed this week in record breaking time. Even considering that the justice process was fast-tracked due to the national outrage it created, it was still speedily delivered. In India fast-tracked can mean three to five years instead of the usual ten to fifteen. It's another matter when those on death row actually make the trip to the gallows. Most Indians breathe a sigh of relief with the thought that a death sentence would now be a precedent and a deterrence to any such crime, a kind of panacea for all the evil perpetrated on womankind in India. That would be quite convenient. But the facts show otherwise. If capital punishment or even other severe sentencing were a true deterrent, US prisons would not be full as full as they are now. Salutary punishment does not really reduce crime, at least in developed countries. There are other more complex issues that have to be addressed by society for that to happen. There are many who tell me that Indian criminals respond well and solely to the threat of punishment. I am hoping that for the sake of women there, they are right and I am wrong. That kind of thinking will save them the effort of treating women as equals, learning to respect them, discarding dowry (it has long been a crime), giving them the same opportunities and privileges as men and doing away with aborting foetuses merely because it will be a female child. Closer to home in Canada, we too breathed a sigh of relief, a bigger sigh though, when circumstances or should I say the cleverness of Assad and Putin delivered Obama out of the corner in which he had boxed himself with his avowed desire to bomb Syria. Though his Congress may perhaps have nixed his request for aerial war, with the people giving him thumbs down, he might still have unilaterally used his presidential authority to bomb to save face and his line in the sand. For him it would mean little - a few billions added to the national debt (even if that could be better used to alleviate the poverty in some of his cities) with no American lives lost. But to humanity it would result in a grievous wound, killing many people, most of them innocent, so facilely described in American terminology as collateral damage. Further, there would be ruination and destabilizing of an ancient and beautiful country and a body blow to the Christians of the Middle East, inhabitants of that land even before the Roman empire, being converted by the apostles themselves. Widespread and illegal mining destroying a local environment already made fragile with construction and strewn garbage, is looking to re-enter Goa riding on the greed of politicians, on the back of a plea of shortage of revenue and through the rear door of the Indian Supreme Court via a petition that seeks to circumvent and short-change the report of a Commission of Enquiry that resulted in the recent decision of that very court to ban mining. It doesn't take rocket science to figure out that the gravy was being sorely missed by the corrupt men who rule Goa and it would be only a matter of time for them to attempt to restart it again. For the sake of the health and well being of the people of Goa who never benefited from the money that rolled in but suffered from its disastrous results, I hope the Supreme Court shoots down that plea. Sustainable mining that benefits both business and people is possible. The Portuguese showed that when they governed Goa. Being foreign, they could have been expected to despoil the land and loot the populace with rampant and unregulated mining, but they didn't. It took our own people to show Goans how it could be done. After you turn fifty you should have a bucket list - things to do before you die, however far into the future that may seem to you. Things like parting with precious things you own but which going forward will give someone else more pleasure than they give you now. Perhaps if you can afford it, travelling to some countries you have not been to, unrestricted for time and location than allowed on those standard tours and cruises. Maybe going and living as a guest in the home of some dirt poor family in a hopeless country, experiencing how people sleep on an empty stomach, yet are happier than you and I. It could even be doing something much less dramatic, by freeing up the time you thought you didn't have, to do them. Spending more time with family perhaps, renewing friendships even, with people who blessed your life as you went through it, who are still around but whom you have never thanked or talked to, enough. I am late in creating my own bucket list but

I am understaffed and underpaid, that’s why. *September 16-22, 2013* *Nuvem priests sing the ‘development’ hymn - 1* All the priests who keep getting posted to the Mae dos Porbos church at Nuvem have one thing in common, a pig-headed resolve to build another church even if it means demolishing the existing old-world church that has charmed parishioners from the 16th century onwards. It is like a fixated idea germinated by the ex-pastor Fr. Alvaro Martins and passed on to his replacement Fr. Victor Rodrigues who, hardly having settled down to his new task, began to press forth with this priestly mission to build a new church no matter what the consequences. Fr. Martins first came up with the idea of another church in 2009 which he thrust upon his parishioners with this cryptic sales pitch: “I have a plan, look at it and come back to me with your suggestions”. That was however only a pulpit speech because he had absolutely no wish to be either transparent or democratic in his enterprise. It was a fait accompli all the way. . The former sarpanch has nine panchas of the VP’s 11 on his payroll (yes, literally) and therefore has a vice-like grip on his kingdom. This is the seventh edition of Sunburn which has arguably put Goa on the international music map because it is one of the biggest electronic dance festivals in the country. Last year around 30,000 attended and the event brought the Goa government Rs 1,00,00,000 as entertainment tax. But the festival has always courted controversy and this year is no exception, the only point being that the whole debate has begun nearly four months before the event is scheduled because organizers went online to sell “early bird tickets” from September 11. More diplomatically, however, because the signboard uses symbols to describe “acceptable” and “unacceptable” attire. Re: [Goanet] Syria crisis: US welcomes 'significant' Russian proposal on chemical weapons
Jim Fernandes wrote: I perfectly understand some folks may be upset with the Americans for involving themselves in other countries' internal affairs. On the other hand, do you have any idea how may Goans and Indians should be thankful to the Americans for freeing up Kuwait from Iraqi clutches? If it hadn't been for the Americans (the rest of the coalition was just a small puppy show), Kuwait would still be under Iraqi control. My gut says, if left unchecked, Saddam would have gobbled up Saudi Arabia as well. Can you imagine how many Goans / Indians would have been uprooted from those countries along with their lively hood? That's not all - Saddam would have exerted control over a significant amount of world oil - forcing the rest of the world to pay through their noses after the annexation of Kuwait / Saudi ! Jim F, I am in one of the remote parts of the US where I can only get an internet connection for a few minutes a day. A few years ago, I had to book way in advance to get to this area. Today, business is so bad that they offer off-season rates during peak season. The locals have no money and are hurting. Their government, however, behaves as though they have money to waste. Taxes are er, blown up in the Middle East. To make this even more bitter, the US borrows money from the Chinese to make ends meet. In a short time (had I the internet I would have provided the exact year) the interest the US pays to service its debt will be more than the amount it currently spends on its military adventures. Until that happens, have fun being Mr Nice Guy to all Goans and Indians. I am glad there are people who benefit from the taxes trusted on US citizens. Mervyn
[Goanet] AT PORVORIM THIS WEEK: THE MAGIC OF SOUND FROM ANOTHER CENTURY ...
But the joke is that any one of the permanent Security Council members could still veto and the judgement can never be enforced. There is zero chance of a resolution ever getting past the UN Security Council to prosecute a US President in the first place. So forget about any US President (whether current or past) ever getting prosecuted on war crimes. Mervyn states: 2) George Bush (43) came pretty close to being arrested when he visited Canada a few years ago. He only escaped because the right wing was running the govt then. My response: Arrest for what? War crimes? Come on my friend! Are you serious? The Americans would mobilize their big guns and they wouldn't care if the folks next door are friends or foes ... I perfectly understand some folks may be upset with the Americans for involving themselves in other countries' internal affairs. After seeing the documentation presented by President Obama, some Americans think the president should go ahead and strike Syria. Their thinking is that this would likely bring in the Iranian puppies into the war. That would in turn give a perfect opportunity for the Americans to go ahead and vaporize Iranian nuclear capabilities - which is probably the ultimate goal of the US military. Sounds scary, right? I can understand if the guy happened to be a ex president of former Yugoslavia or Burundi or some such obscure nation ... And anyway, how would the UN get its resolution passed to take a former US president to court for war crimes, when the Americans have a veto power? Jim F, 1) The US does not have veto powers at the International Court of Justice at the Hague. 2) George Bush (43) came pretty close to being arrested when he visited Canada a few years ago. He only escaped because the right wing was running the govt then. 3) The US is the only country that insists it has the right to mine any area that it feels like. Kids under 10 years old are still getting killed and maimed by mines left behind in Vietnam last century. 4) We live in a 1984 world where 5 nations are equal, but have veto powers at the UN. 5) To answer your first question, above, I do not believe that there is a group of nations that has the balls to prosecute a President or ex-President of the USA. I also believe that there are individuals (US residents included) who are adamant enough to bring all war criminals to justice. 6) I must congratulate the bunch of clowns who awarded BHO the Nobel Peace Prize years ago. His current policy is that the US is the accuser, the judge and the jury for any interest of the US's any where in the world. Mervyn
[Goanet] GAMING COMMISSION.- OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR CCP-
GAMING COMMISSION Now, U-turn disease has caught up with the Mayor Surendra Furtado who is desperate to have gaming commission with the CCP involvement to be in place in the city of Panjim. As long as CCP is kept out in any activity it becomes illegal, immoral and destructive to the people environment in Panjim, believes Surendra Furtado. Once CCP is kept in the loop and the palms well greased of these in power it becomes a very profitable economic activity and all the troubles faced by the people of Panjim becomes insignificant and non existent. Well done Mr Mayor, your thoughts for gaming commission and revenue generation is extremely thought provoking. Prostitution over the ages is considered as a big adventurous game. Forget what happens to environment, forget sex transmission diseases, forget religious institutions preaching about prostitution, gambling etc If gaming commission includes prostitution, ten times of revenue generated by Casinos will come to Panjim. Since your only interest lies in giving employment revenue generation and satisfying the population, Goa can be the prime destination of the world replacing Amsterdam. We can put Amsterdam to shame. People of Panjim are waiting to hear your statement on including the prostitution in the gaming commission. Wish you all the best in your endeavour to make Panjim the prime gambling, sex and “ BEBEDARIA” destination, because lot of money can be generated by these activities through the CCP and you and your fellow councilors will remain for ever happy and hopefully in power. You are kindly aware that the people of Panjim are use living in garbage all around them. They are also used to Casinos, all around them and they are waiting for “PIP-SHOWS” from prostitution dances.
