2023 at 4.00 pm by Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira.

This will be an opportunity for youngsters to learn about these

I urge students and aspirants to avail this opportunity and register and

Re: [Goanet] Resubscribing, Eugene's comments

2018-01-20 Thread Herman
Dear Eugene,

FN is right in what he says; there is no use in cursing the darkness. This
issue has come up numerous times over the years.

The mailing list software is standard. If member's mailboxes are full and the
emails bounce, the mailing list software will switch you to the no mail setting
after a set number of repeated attempts to deliver mail. We've set the number
of attempts pretty high.

Whilst not everyone wants to or can volunteer, they can prevent being switched
to the no mail setting by maintaining their mailboxes to avoid bouncing emails
in the first place. Users get an email telling them they have been switched to
the no mail setting with a link to change their settings back, which takes less
than 30 seconds.

I felt you took a little dig at FN in your email. He should enjoy his status as
"King of the Goan Cyberworld" to the fullest given his contribution to the
community.

Goan diaspora convers its concerns over State to CM

Times News Network

Panaji: The ill-effects of mass tourism, water shortages in the dry months,
unregulated disposal of mining waste and threat to animal life as a result of
unregulated garbage disposal are among the concerns of the Goan diaspora
presented to chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday evening.

Edgar Valles, president of Lisbon-based Casa de Goa, an association of overseas
Goans, presented the issues which were discussed at the recently-concluded
international conference on 'Sustainable development of Goa in the 21st
century'.

Tourism is becoming a major threat to the quality of life for certain segments
of the population. "Deforestation, good quality agricultural land
declassification, absence of sustainable waste disposal practices all the way
to access impediments to the permanent residents of Goa (for instance, to
public beaches) are among unsustainable practices that are incumbent on
authorities to thwart," states one of the conclusions.

The association suggests working with Portgual, which has experience in
controlling the negative impact of mass tourism and promoting promising modes
such as agro-tourism.

When the state has 11 reivers with excellent water quality where the monsoon
can satisfy the water consumption of the state, why should there be tankers
supplying water, was another concern. The paper also highlighted the plastic
waste accumulating and floating in the rivers.

Where Goa's built and intangible heritage is concerned, the association
suggested archiving this as part of a research project where Goa University and
one or more Portuguese universities could work together.

[Goanet] Goanet's 20th Anniversary!

2014-08-25 Thread Herman
August 25th, 2014

Dear Goanetters,

Today Goanet passes a remarkable milestone -- it's 20th anniversary!

Today, we take the internet for granted. We spend so much time on the internet
hashtagging memorieson Twitter and Instagram, following our friends on
Facebook, searching Google for everything buying stuff, trading emails, and so
on. The internet keeps us connected to the rest of the world at all times.

But 20 years ago, the internet as we know it was just getting started, and
people didn’t really know what to make of it. In those days the internet was
not as user friendly. But, a small group of managed to fine each other on
Internet Relay Chat and started a mailing list. The first mailing list was
really just people sending emails to my inbox prefaced with a *, and I'd
forward them on to users who signed up. After a year or so we had our first
mailing list program do the work for us. And, here we are today.

Goanet has remained a volunteer-driven operation. We've had many volunteers
over the last 20 years. A few volunteers need to be singled out. No one has
done more work than our very own Frederick Noronha ("FN"). In addition to
moderating the mailing list, FN contributes immensely. Bosco D'Mello is another
one of our moderators with 10-15 years of service. Viviana Coelho also
contributed 5-10 years of service.

These are huge contributions to the community. And, I thank each of them for
the time and effort they have given us. I also wish to thank all the other
volunteers who have contributed to Goanet.

Goanet has brought the international Goan community together. It has been a
platform for launching other very successful groups and projects. While Goanet
has not lived up to it's full potential it has still had an impact.

Folks, please volunteer in whatever capacity you can to help sustain our group.
We have an opportunity to make a difference in Goa and to support out
international Goan community. You don't have to be tech savvy to volunteer.
And, please donate to help sustain our growth. Every little bit counts.

I'll end here by congratulating all our members for making this possible.

Viva Goanet! Viva Goa!

2013-08-25 Thread Herman Carneiro

Dear Goanetters,

Today Goanet celebrates its 19th anniversary! It's a monumental
achievement that each and every one of us should be proud off. Thousands
of people have been connected because of Goanet and many friendships
have been forged. The network has served as an important platform to

Speaking of volunteers, we owe many thanks to FN and Bosco for their
tireless work over the years. They have remained pillars of Goanet. I'd
also like to thank all the previous volunteers for the time and effort
they dedicated to the global Goan community. A big welcome to our new

More about Goanet:

Share a little about our organisation
A 19-year-project, run on volunteerism, that links the Goan diaspora.
Started in 1994 by Herman Carneiro, then 17 years old. Today
administered with a team of around half-dozen. It has a readership of
approx 14,000 each day, which is a significant number for India's
smallest state.

Executive Summary
This is a venture which influenced a generation of Goans in cyberspace.
It has sustained and grown itself on volunteer power.

Approach/ Strategy
This is a volunteer-driven initiative. Advertising is accepted, but the
project is not dependent on it. Likewise, there is no membership fee,
and all are welcome to become members. The goal is to network one of
India's smaller communities, and build positive change.

Stakeholders
Mostly Goans in the diaspora, but also people back home, tourists
visiting the state, and those seeking to resettle in goa.

About the initiative
Besides the main network, we have initiatives for news,
cybermatrimonials, sports, etc. Goanet also has an annual face-to-face
meeting in Goa each December. Articles generated via Goanet are also
carried in mainstream newspapers back in Goa, which says something about
the impact it generates.

Impact -- Outcome
Goanet is reaching growing numbers today, and is shaping the debate in
significant ways, both among the diaspora and back home.

Learning Points
1. Volunteer power works.
2. Volunteer power can be sustained.
3. A little can go a long way.
4. The latest technology is not necessarily best.

What Next
We're growing, diversifying, and influencing the cyberdebate even more
as the Internet becomes more ubiquitious in Goa. Meanwhile, this is also
serving as a powerful mechanism to help people express themselves, build
"citizen journalism" initiatives, and even launch a number of positive
initiatives that help Goa.

Reasoning
Inspite of being India's smallest State, Goanet (linking Goa and he

[Goanet] Happy 17th Anniversary Goanet

2011-08-25 Thread Herman Carneiro

Dear Goanetters,

Today Goanet celebrates its 17th anniversary! I'd like to take this opportunity
to say a few thank you's on this proud occasion.

First and foremost we owe thanks to those who work so hard to provide this
service. We have two volunteers who are the pillars of Goanet: Frederick
Noronha who has volunteered for 16 years; and Bosco D'Mello who has volunteered
over 10 years now. That's an astounding commitment and contribution to Goanet
and the Goan community. I thank them both on behalf of all of us.

A word of thanks to Christina Pinto who regularly publishes the Goanet
Cybermatrimonials, and Avelino D'Souza along with a few others who help us
whenever they can. Their time and effort is certainly appreciated by all of us.

Thanks go to every member of Goanet as well. Your subscriptions are testament
to our success. Obviously we cannot all contribute to the dialogue on Goanet.
However, many thanks go to the contributors for sharing information and views
on topics pertinent to Goans worldwide.

I am sure you will all agree with me that Goanet is an important communication
network for Goans worldwide and provides an important service to our community.
I hope that will continue into the future.

[Goanet] Goanet Initiative: Introducing New Members on Goanet

2010-09-10 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

An active Goanetter from Goa, retired principal Tony de Sa of Moira, has
volunteered to present brief profile of active (and not so active)
Goanetters, so that we could get to know each other better.

Tony plans to begin his postings, around once a week, starting from
October 2010. He plans to approach some Goanetters off-list to seek your
inputs in describing yourself. These introductions will be posted on
Goanet in random order.

We encourage you to participate, so that we can get to know each other
better on this active and time-tested 16-year-old network.

Meanwhile, this year, we have also started a Goanet Classifieds occasional
column. It is meant to share 'news you can use' by way of free
classifieds. Non-profits and small businesses are requested to send in
their inputs to i...@goanet.org with GOANET CLASSIFIEDS in the subject
line. Please trust our volunteers' decision in the suitability of carrying
your post, and how often it could be repeated, if at all.

Yours sincerely,

[Goanet] Raising funds for Daddy's Home Charity (Margao, Goa)

2010-09-09 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

Goanet is proud to team with Noel Rebello (London, ex-Mombasa) to help
raise money for a non-profit organization called Daddy's Home. Daddy's
Home is located in Gogol, Margao, and is open to people with learning
difficulties, such as Down Syndrome, no matter what their age, caste or
creed may be. It provides an atmosphere within which children are enabled
to try to live an independent life.

A couple of articles providing information on Daddy's Home are available
at the below links:

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/GwxOury2u8Jr1KYoPzqtOQ?feat=directlink

Noel Rebello is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania to raise money for
Daddy's Home. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,882
metres or 19,298 ft. He will travel to Tanzania shortly and begin his
ascent later this week. We wish Noel a safe journey to the summit and
back.

Please sponsor Noel and make a donation in support of Daddy's Home by
going to www.Goanet.org and click on the "Make a Donation" button. Please
be sure to put "Daddy's Home" in the comments. Should you have any
difficulties in making your donation at the website, please do not
hesitate to contact us at goanet-ad...@goanet.org. We will acknowledge all
donations.

Your money will go a long way towards supporting this important charity.

Please feel free to circulate this email.

Thank you for your support!

Dear Goanetters,

Today Goanet celebrates its 16th anniversary!! I'd like to take this
opportunity to share my thoughts on this proud occasion.

First and foremost we owe thanks to those who work so hard to provide
this service. We have two volunteers who are the pillars of Goanet:
Frederick Noronha who has volunteered for 15 years; and Bosco D'Mello
who has volunteered over 9 years now. That's an astounding commitment
and contribution to Goanet and the Goan community. I thank them both on
behalf of all of us.

This year we were sad to see Viviana Coelho retire. Viviana volunteered
with Goanet for about 12 years and was an invaluable part of the team.
We thank Viviana and wish her all the success and happiness life has to
offer.

A word of thanks to Christina Pinto who regularly publishes the Goanet
Cybermatrimonials.

Many thanks too to Avelino D'Souza and Selma Carvalho for volunteering
with Goanet alongwith with a few others who help us whenever they can.
Their time and effort is certainly appreciated by all of us.

Thanks go to every member of Goanet as well. Your subscriptions are
testament to our success. Obviously we cannot all contribute to the
dialogue on Goanet. However, many thanks go to the contributors for
sharing information and views on topics pertinent to Goans worldwide.

Goanet has a lot to be proud of this year:

* Helping in the launch of a successful book on the Goan diaspora, by
Goanetter Selma Carvalho.

* Taking forward the debate on a number of issues crucial to Goa, and
reflecting all points of view, including urban planning, infrastructure,
people's movements, corruption, communalism.

* Supporting communications and spreading the word over positive Goan
ventures, like Goa Sudharop and World Goa Day.

* Holding a successful Goanetters meeting in December 2009, where the
focus was on a little noticed face of the diaspora -- Goans in Pakistan!

* Sharing information about initiatives relevant to the diaspora
undertaken from Goa, by the Goa government, the NRI Commission and others.

* Helping build a better understanding of Goa by promoting visibility of
Goa books globally, including those published by not-for-profit Goa,
1556 Trust, Isidore Dantas and others.

I am sure you will all agree with me that Goanet is *the* communication
network for Goans worldwide and provides an important service to our
community. I hope that will continue into the future.

We need your help to make that happen. Invite you friends and family to
subscribe to Goanet and publicize Goanet. Volunteer with us. From a
network with thousands of members it's unfortunate that we only have a
handful of volunteers supporting the day-to-day operations of the list
and running various projects and initiatives. It doesn't take much to be
a volunteer. All you would need would be a few minutes almost every day,
if possible. No technical skills required.

Your financial support is also welcome. Donations currently go towards
supporting the maintenance and growth of the mailing lists and website.
When the day comes that we have a surplus, we will use that money
towards community building projects in Goa. Make that happen by a
financial contribution, even if just annually. Donations can be made at
www.goanet.org.

Thank you all for your continued support.

On behalf of all of us on Goanet, Happy Anniversary!

[Goanet] Goanet 15th Anniversary 25.08.2009

2009-08-25 Thread Herman Carneiro

   August 25, 2009 - Goanet's 15th Anniversary

Dear Goanetters,

Today, Goanet reaches a landmark 15 years in service.

Goanet had a humble beginning 15 years ago with a group of 20 or so young
students across the globe joining together to form the first Goan network
online. The network has now grown to over 12,000 members worldwide.

To me, Goanet is more than merely a mailing list. It's been a family to me
for these 15 years. Indeed, Goanet has been with me through good times and
bad. Many of you have been there with me over the last 15 years as my life
changed. We may not have met but we share a connection. I am sure many of
you feel the same way.

I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for making Goanet what it is
today. We wouldn't be here as a group if it wasn't for your hard work,
dedication and support. Special thanks goes to our volunteers who spend
countless of thankless hours supporting the community. One of our
volunteers (guess who) has volunteered for 14 years now. Amazing!

We deserve a collective congratulations as a group on this fantastic
achievement.

Please feel free to make a comment on the public forum. I think we'd all
be delighted to hear some stories and reminisce.

Happy 15th birthday Goanet!

[Goanet] ADMIN NOTE: Closing Threads

2008-10-13 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

Late last month the issue of Goanet moderation was raised and
subsequently Goanetters were allowed to share their views on this issue.
We'd like to thank you feedback. Those threads have now run their course
and there's been nothing new to add. I am, therefore, closing the
following threads:

Open Letter to Goanet
Goanet Moderation
And related threads

It would appear that some of you who were highly critical of moderation
have your own personal agendas. You've made this clear on other forums.
If it is the moderation you're concerned about you've made you point.
We've heard everything you had to say. Leave it at that. If you're
agenda is simply to make trouble and sour the atmosphere on the list be
warned that we won't tolerate it. We won't allow members to hijack the
list with personal agendas. We'll accept constructive criticism but not
much more.

I'd like to make it clear that posting to Goanet is a privilege and not a
right. We must insist that you obey the rules when posting to the list.
Our rules simply outline the proper etiquette when posting to a public
group. If you can't respect the other members and follow the rules Goanet
is not the place for you to contribute.

To those of you who contribute on Goanet or behind the scenes and follow
the rules, thank you!

Yours sincerely,

[Goanet] Goanet Moderation

2008-09-30 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

There have been emails from a handful of people seeking to cast aspersions
on Goanet moderation. As chair of Goanet I would like to address the
specific issues that have been raised.

First off, I’d like to remind you that Goanet's Rules are published on
Goanet's website at www.goanet.org and are published here on the mailing
list from time to time. Goanet’s Rules have evolved over many years to
take into account the proper etiquette in participating in public forums
and the needs of our members. We’d like to see Goanet’s discussions be of
high quality.

I’d like to remind you, too, that Goanet's moderators do a thankless job
and deserve full recognition for their services. They are volunteers who
spend many hours of their valuable time offering their services to the
community. The majority of them have been doing this for years and their
efforts are deeply appreciated.

We’ve built our team of moderators to be as impartial as possible. Our
team is comprised of individuals of different ages, genders and on
different continents. And, like I said before, many of them have a wealth
of experience in moderating Goanet.

The issues:

We endeavor to provide an explanation for every message we reject and we
save a copy of the rejected post for a period of time. Those of you who
state that your messages are being rejected without an explanation are
habitual violators of Goanet's Rules and the moderators have afforded you
more than you fair share of explanations, which you have chosen to ignore.
Given the limited number of volunteers and our work load we cannot
possibly point out the same violations time after time. Many of you have
been informed of this.

If a message is rejected, please follow the instructions in the rejection
message and repost your message. Alternatively, if you have any concerns
please bring them to the attention of the Goanet Admin team.

Conducting witch-hunts to identify moderators who reject posts and
lambasting them publicly is unfair and uncalled for. While moderators are
encouraged to add their names to rejection notices, it is not a
requirement, and it is not surprising that some of our moderators wish to
remain anonymous for this very reason. This unsavory culture of singling
out moderators and attacking them on the public forum is unacceptable and
we will not allow it. Such matters will be dealt with internally. So
don’t be surprised if your messages are rejected on this account. If you
have a problem with moderation contact the admin team or myself and we’ll
sort things out. Our decisions will be final on the matter.

I know that I haven’t addressed every issue that’s come up in this thread
but we’ll address the issues internally.

We encourage you to send across constructive criticism and by all means
contact us if you have problems. We’ll do our best to sort out the
issues. We can’t always please everyone, but we’ll try our best.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

--

[Goanet] Goanet's 14th Anniversary -- August 25, 2008

2008-08-25 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

Another year has flown by and today is Goanet's 14th anniversary. I'd like
to thank each and every one of you for your continued support in making
this possible.

We owe a great deal of thanks to our dedicated volunteers who put in a lot
of work behind the scenes. They are:

Frederick 'FN' Noronha (Goa, India)
Bosco D'Mello (Toronto, Canada)
Viviana Coelho (San Francisco, USA)
Christina Pinto (Australia)
Avelino D'Souza (Kuwait)

Two of our volunteers deserve special mention. Frederick Noronha and
Bosco D'Mello have been the pillars of Goanet. They have both gone way
beyond their call of duty.

Many thanks to those of you who support Goanet through volunteering,
making donations, promoting Goanet at events or on your websites, and
contributing to discussions on Goanet.

Goanet needs your support to grow. We will need you this year more than
ever as we expand our services. We will need your donations and time
volunteering more than anything. I hope that you will rise to the task
when the time comes.

Goanet is a non-profit organization that provides a free and valuable
service to the community. If you benefit from the service we provide think
about your part in supporting us to make this possible. Make a donation to
Goanet regularly, no matter how small. Each little bit helps us with
maintenance costs. It's easy, just go to the Goanet homepage and click on
the button "Make a Donation".

Thank you all for your continued support. We hope you enjoy Goanet and
that you will continue your support for us.

[Goanet] International Goan Convention - Toronto 2008

2008-08-20 Thread Herman Carneiro
I was disappointed not to attend the International Goan Convention (IGC) in
Toronto held earlier this year. I’ve been reading the exchanges about the
convention and feel compelled to express my thoughts on it.

First off, I’d like to congratulate the organizers on what I heard was a very
successful event. You deserve a great deal of praise for taking the initiative
to bring the Goan diaspora together to make them more aware of issues in Goa
and in the international Goan community, and to share in the traditions and
culture that make us Goan. All too often we talk and nothing comes of it.
It’s refreshing to see someone take some action. We’re indebted to you for all
the hard work and time that you invested selflessly in community. We need more
people like you in the community. Congratulations on a job very well done!

The organizers of the convention have shown us that it doesn’t matter who you
are or where you are; any one of us can make a difference in the community.
Don’t be afraid to step up to do something for Goa or the community; whether
you do something for your local community or something on a larger scale.
There are lots of people who can help you. I, for one, am happy to support
anyone who does anything for Goa and the Goan community. I think this is an
important message, especially for the youth. We need more young people to get
involved and we need to have an encouraging environment that gives them a
chance to do so.

As a community it’s sad to see that we’re largely unsupportive of each other.
I was disappointed to hear what the attendance was given that convention was
organized in Toronto, which is meant to have the highest population of Goans
outside of Goa. I’m ashamed, too, that to a large extent we’re so critical as
a community. Here we’ve had a group of us trying to make a difference and do
something good for Goa and the community and instead of being showered with
thanks and praise they’ve faced lots of criticism. We’ve got to make a
concerted effort as a group to change this. We really have.

I had a friend who told me once that Goans as a community as a whole never look
out for their own. He then went on to give me an example of how Keralites take
care of their own. One Keralite working in a company will bring in another
Keralite and together they’ll bring in more. They are happy to see other
Keralites succeed. That’s such a good example of a community being supportive
and everyone trying to help one another. Unfortunately, my friend has had the
opportunity to give business to another Goan in the community but he didn’t.
The point is that we’ve got to stop talking and take responsibility for
ourselves. Don’t tell me that Goans never help each other; you be the first to
reach out to other Goans.

Folks, it’s high time that changed out ways and became better as a community.
No one likes the “crab mentality”. So why not change? We need to take it upon
ourselves to make a concerted effort to be more supportive.

Now there’s always be some among us who either can’t change or won’t change.
There’ll always be someone with “critical insights” or someone who discourages
you. And, there’ll always be politics. In my experience you just have to
ignore all of this and do what you need to do. Constructive criticism is
healthy but ignore the rest.

At the end of the day if we’re unhappy about ourselves as a community then we
have to take it upon ourselves to change. And, we *can* change as a community.
Change starts with each one of us.

Great job again to the organizers. Congratulations again! Many thanks to all
those who attended the convention, especially those who travelled from far.
And, many thanks to all of you doing you part in your local communities.

Best wishes,

- Herman :)

Subject: [Goanet-News] Where have the Toronto Goans gone?
(VictorRangel-Ribeiro in Times of India, Panjim)

Where have the Toronto Goans gone?
Goans from the US, Australia and Goa attended the Goan International
Convention in Toronto. Despite the small group, there was a buzz of
activities and bonds of friendships renewed
VICTOR RANGEL RIBEIRO Times News Network

Consider this paradox: A Goan International Convention is held in
Toronto, Canada, a city that with its suburbs claims a Goan population
of 20,000, and is home to the Goan Overseas Association. You would
expect attendance in the hundreds, if not the thousands, right?

Now look at who showed up for the convention held in Mississauga, a
Toronto suburb, between July 23 to 26: Nascimento Caldeira came from
Melbourne, Australia; Virginia Bras e Gomes from Lisbon; Cornel da
Costa, his daughter Joana, Renee Barretto and two others flew from
London; George Pinto and Filomena Giese and eight others from
California; three flew in from Wisconsin as well. NRI Commissioner
Eduardo Faleiro, fashion guru Wendell Rodricks, architect Dean D'Cruz,
State Bank manager Trevor Fernandes, cartoonist Alexyz, and a
14-person mando troupe came from faraway Goa.

My wife and I drove 1,600 kilometres to get there, 800 each way. At
the end of that hard 11-hour drive we found, not hundreds, but just 80
or so registrants who attended the workshops and
presentations.Thirty-nine of these were from outside Canada, another
six were from such distant Canadian cities like Vancouver and Quebec.
Of the remaining 35, most were from Mississauga; only a handful were
from Toronto itself, even though that city is only 40 kms away.

The low numbers did not dampen the enthusiasm, as guiding spirits
Kevin and Lisette Saldanha, along with Ben Antao, Francis and Clare
Rodrigues, Bosco De Mello, Mervyn Lobo, and Walter Tavares kept things
flowing.

Participants in Wendell's fashion workshops came away enthused; the
thirteen at my writing sessions kept demanding more. Audiences were
stirred by the screening of The Rape of Goa, and Dean's presentations
of environmental and architectural issues and of Clinton Vaz's
pictorial essay on Goa's garbage crisis. Konkani received a push.
Alexyz's fabled cartoons lined the walls of an entire room. Novelist
Ben Antao presided over book launches that included Marinella
Proenca's Heart Beat, Alexyz's Goa, Goan, Goaing, Gone?, Cheryl
Antao-Xavier's Dance of the Peacock, Ben's own novel, Living in the
Market, and his travelogue, The Islands of Sicily.

A new book titled Goa: Aparanta -- Land Beyond the End, was also
unveiled. Christine Pinto and Lea Rangel-Ribeiro spoke on identity and
the diaspora; Coralie D'Souza unfortunately was taken ill as she began
to speak. Francis Rodrigues conducted a music workshop and a session
on Goan music. He also introduced the Lady Mayor of Mississauga and
NRI Commissioner Faleiro.

The Mayor praised Goans' contribution to the city; Faleiro promised to
give NRGs a seat on various boards. Evening events included a beauty
contest and Goan Idol. Both drew a crowd. A mando performance was well
received, as was a Konkani tiatr that ended at 1 am. Close to 400
attended the Saturday night ball, proving once again that we Goans,
while blessed with two extremities, prefer to cultivate the one that
lies closest to the ground.

Attendees agreed the convention had been a success. New friendships
were formed, old bonds renewed. Best of all, Renee Barretto announced
plans for yet another conference next year, this time in London.

2008-03-06 Thread Herman D'Souza
kv maybe a british now, so also there are lots of goans here who are basically
from africa and presently british or maybe any other nationality, however they
still consider themselves Goans or Indians (same like the many Gujaratis).
whether they have a house in Cavel Mumbai or Timbaktu it does not matter. the
bottom line is however successful they are they have the Goan Culture,
Tradition and Values and these Successful Goans we should use them as role
models and learn from their positives. If you read on the news sometimes they
do mention kv as a Goan NRI

The discussion of the topic here was not determining their present nationality
but their success stories and using them as role models

Hello,
I think there was a query regarding admission to a CBSE school. Only a few
schools in Goa are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. The
Kendriya Vidyalayas - five of them altogether, two in Vasco, one in Ponda, one
in Bambolim and one in Verem - and the Navodaya Vidyalayas - two of them to be
found in Goa, one in Valpoi and the other one in Canacona - are affiliated to
the CBSE. Sharda Mandir in Miramar and Manovikas in Margao are affiliated to
the ICSE.

If I'm not mistaken both follow the NCERT syllabus. This same syllabus has also
been adopted by schools in Goa. A small observation:Children coming from
village schools too have done very well for themselves.
Hope I have been of some help.
Have a nice day!

I agree that success stories from Goans should be made as role models
whereby Goans do not forget their identity and mother tongue

One of the Goan NRI in UK is Keith Vaz. The other person I remember was Dr.
Simon Fernandes in Dhobitalao who was a great personality

Many Goans have success stories in their small contribution they make to the
community and business alike which I think should be highlighted too as role
models

[Goanet] WISHING YOU A VERY HAPPY FEAST OF SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER

2007-12-03 Thread Herman D'Souza
WISHING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
A VERY HAPPY AND BLESSED FEAST
OF SAINT FRANCIS XAVIER

TANCIO, CHRISTINE AND HERMAN D'SOUZA
London UK

December 3: St. Francis Xavier
This great missionary was born at Xavier Castle in
Spain in 1506. He went to the University of Pariswhen
he was eighteen. Here he met St. Ignatius Loyola, who
was about tostart the Society of Jesus. St. Ignatius
tried to get Francis to joinhim. At first the
happy-go-lucky young man would not think of it.
St.Ignatius repeated to him the words of Jesus in the
Gospel: 'What doesit profit a person to gain the whole
world and lose his own soul?' Atlast, Francis saw
clearly that his place in life was among the
Jesuits. When Francis was thirty-four, St. Ignatius
sent him as amissionary to the East Indies. The king
of Portugal wanted to give himpresents to take along
and a servant. Francis refused his kind offerand
explained: 'The best way to acquire true dignity is to
wash one'sown clothes and boil one's own pot.' During
the course of his amazingcareer in Goa, India, Japan
and other lands of the east, St. Francismade thousands
of converts. In fact, he baptized so many people that
hebecame too weak to raise his arms. He gathered the
little childrenaround him and taught them the Catholic
faith. Then he made little layapostles of them. He
invited them to spread the faith they had
learned. There was nothing St. Francis wouldn't do to
help people. Once he faceda fierce band of raiders,
alone, with no weapon but his crucifix. Theybacked up
and did not attack his Christian tribes. The saint
alsobrought many bad-living Christians to repentance.
His only 'tools' werehis gentle, polite ways and his
prayers. In the midst of his painfuljourneys and great
labors, the saint was full of a special joy comingfrom
God. St. Francis longed to get into China, into which
no foreignerwas permitted. At last, the arrangements
were made, but the greatmissionary became ill. He died
almost alone in 1552 on an island offthe Chinese
coast. He was just forty-six-years-old. Francis Xavier
wasproclaimed a saint by Pope Gregory XV in 1622. He
was in the best ofcompany at the canonization ceremony
in Rome. Ignatius of Loyola,Teresa of Avila, Philip
Neri and Isidore the Farmer were alsoproclaimed saints
that day. Reflection: Francis'love for Jesus was so
strong that he could not rest at the thought ofso many
people who had never heard the Gospel. What would
happen if Iwere able to share my faith with at least
one person in my life?
It is truly a matter of wonder that one man in the
short space of ten years (6 May, 1542 - 2 December,
1552) could have visited so many countries, traversed
so many seas, preached the Gospel to so many nations,
and converted so many infidels. The incomparable
apostolic zeal which animated him, and the stupendous
miracles which God wrought through him, explain this
marvel, which has no equal elsewhere. The list of the
principal miracles may be found in the Bull of
canonization. St. Francis Xavier is considered the
greatest missionary since the time of the Apostles,
and the zeal he displayed, the wonderful miracles he
performed, and the great number of souls he brought to
the light of true Faith, entitle him to this
distinction. He was canonized with St. Ignatius in
1622, although on account of the death of Gregory XV,
the Bull of canonization was not published until the
following year.
The body of the saint is still enshrined at Goa in the
church which formerly belonged to the Society. In 1614
by order of Claudius Acquaviva, General of the Society
of Jesus, the right arm was severed at the elbow and
conveyed to Rome, where the present altar was erected
to receive it in the church of the Gesu.

Dear Goanetters,

As many of you already know, today is Goanet's 13th anniversary. I'd like
to thank each and every one of you for your continued support in making
this possible.

Goanet started in 1994 with 20 young Goans from around the world. The
nucleus came together on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), which was popular at
the time. At that time mailing lists were new, webpages were novel, and
there was no blogging, wikipedia, Google or youtube. As the news of Goanet
spread by word of mouth it kept growing and it's evolved into what it is
today. Goanet is special in that it's much more than a mailing list and
website. Goanet is an online community. People often say to me that they
are hooked on Goanet and can't live without it. I know that I've logged in
every day for last 13 years for the same reason.

We are very lucky to have such dedicate volunteers who work day in and day
out behind to scene to keep things running. They do a thankless job. They
deserve special mention and thanks:

Frederick Noronha (Goa, India)
Bosco D'Mello (Toronto, Canada)
Viviana Coelho (San Francisco, USA)
Christina Pinto (Australia)
Michelle D'Souza (Boston, USA)
Avelino D'Souza (Kuwait)
Gabe Menezes (London, England)
Sherwin Cotta (London, England)
Jason Monserrate (Goa, India)
Zena Costa (Goa, India)

Many thanks to those of you who have actively supported Goanet in the past
by volunteering, making donations, promoting Goanet at events or on your
websites, and contributing to the interesting discussions on Goanet.

Goanet needs your support to grow. Become a volunteer today. Just a few
minutes each day can go a long way in helping us maintain our operations
and giving us an opportunity to provide more services for Goans worldwide.

Goanet is a non-profit organization that provides a free and valuable
service to the community. If you benefit from the service we provide think
about your part in supporting us to make this possible. Make donations to
Goanet regularly, no matter how small. Each little bit helps us with
maintenance costs. It's easy, just go to the Goanet homepage and click on
the "Make a Donation" button.

I look to you to help us take a giant leap forward and make Goanet's 14th
year of service a great success.

Yours sincerely,

--
Herman

GOANET ISSUES
---

On the whole we are pleased with overall conduct and standard of posts on
Goanet. However, we’d like to make improvement to raise the level of
discussion. To do this we’re going to favor posts that are written well
and posts that do not violate our rules. We're going to give priority to
new voices. And, we're going to favor posts that do not spoil the tone of
discussion.

Last year we saw the development of a troubling practice emerge. When a
members' posts were rejected by moderators they set up mini lists to (1)
challenge the moderator's decision and (2) to continue discussing the
topic offline. Discussing topics offline is our members' prerogative and
they can do so if they please. However, lots of members were included on
these mini lists that wanted no part of it. We're going to take steps to
cut down on this behavior. We're going to revise our rules such that the
creation of mini lists will be prohibited. If we receive complaints from
member's that they have been spammed through mini lists by being included
without their desire or permission, we'll reprimand the offending
member(s) for creating such lists.

The last point that needs to be put across is please ensure your posts are
in plain text. We do not like to reject posts outright and so we take the
trouble to reformat and repost emails that are not in plain text. This
takes a great deal of time and effort. Our energy can be directed some
place more useful.

Last, but not least, I want you to know that we have some new and exciting
services that will come online this year. Keep your eye on this space for
more developments. And, please feel free to volunteer with us at any time.

I apologize for the long email. There were a lot of issues to talk about.

Thank you for your time.

Best wishes,

Hi Eddie

Firstly thank you very much for your wonderful konkani songs. I enjoy
listening to each and every single konkani song that you have sent to me

also send if you have songs from C. Alvares (duets - C. Alvares was the King
of Duets), Remo Fernandes, S. Lemos (good moral songs), etc.

On Friday at St. Josephs church Wembley there was a Konkani Mass presided by
Fr. Britto and two other priests. I was surprised to see that the church was
almost full with konkani speaking people from Wembley London.

SAIBINMAECHEM PORBIM - BOU FEST

I remember the feast being celebrated in Bandra Bombay from Sunday to Sunday
for one whole week with throngs with people coming there from all over Bombay.

kind regards

[Goanet] Goanet's 12th Anniversary - August 25, 2006

2006-08-25 Thread Herman Carneiro
Dear Goanetters,

Goanet celebrates its 11th anniversary today -- August 25, 2006. On
behalf of the Goanet Admin team, I'd like to say thank you and
congratulations for making this possible.

Goanet had a humble beginning in 1994 with only 20 members. Today, Goanet
is *the* public forum of choice for Goans worldwide for addressing
important issues. Goanet is an interesting and vibrant forum with lots of
different characters. Goanet also has a great wealth of information in
its archives. However, Goanet is much more than that -- it is a “virtual”
community. Whether you have made new friends on Goanet or rekindled old
friendships Goanet has certainly been an important network in our
community. I hope that you will continue to support Goanet far into the
future.

The Goanet volunteers require special mention. They work tirelessly and
selflessly to keep Goanet running. Moreover, they do a fantastic job. We
owe them tremendous thanks. They are:

Frederick Noronha (Goa, India)
Viviana Coelho (San Francisco, CA, USA)
Bosco D'Mello (Toronto, Canada)
Daisy Rodrigues (CA, USA)
Michelle D'Souza (Boston, MA, USA)
Christina Pinto (Australia)
Deborah Santimano (Lahore, Pakistan)

What does the future hold for Goanet?

As you know, the Goanet mailing lists have been the mainstay of Goanet.
We will continue to expand this network to reach Goans wherever they may
be. We will also continue to work towards improving the quality of the
forum.

We need your help to make Goanet grow. There are two important ways all
our members can help:

1. Make a donation to Goanet. Your donations will be used to solely to
maintain Goanet operations. Go to our website (http://www.goanet.org/)
and make a donation using the Paypal link.

2. Become a volunteer. We’re looking for volunteers to help expand our
network. You work will go a long way to supporting the community.

Congratulations to Goanet on its 12th anniversary!

It was a thought provoking mail from Praveen. Kudos! Very few had picked
up the gauntlet earlier and called spade a spade. This issue is not new
but needs to be looked at through a new angle, of course, without
forgetting what has happened in the past. It was during the formative
stages of KPA, when getting official status to Konkani was a prime issue,
some wise old men of letters in Roman script brought up the issue of
script to the fore. They were told that it was wrong time to raise the
issue of script at that time as it would be seen as the chink in the
armour of united leviathan of Konkani masses. They were promised that the
issue would be taken up as soon as Konkani gets the official status.
Nothing has happened over the years. There is a sole daily and a monthly
published in Konkani (of course Devanagari), which even jointly can’t
take on any Marathi or English publication in terms of circulation.
Devanagari Konkani historically never had a mass readership. On the other
hand Konkani in Roman script always had a mass patronage. One swallow
doesn’t make a summer and handful of Konkani writers from Hindu Bahujan
(majority) community are not enough to prove that Devanagari Konkani has
reached out to the maximum number of people in Goa since that’s the norm
of an official language. Official Language (language without script is a
meaningless notion) is the one which is accepted by the majority.
Unfortunately, insecurity of certain sections and elements in Konkani
movement and literature (I mean Devanagari) has forced many from Bahujan
community to change their colors. These chameleons have turned out to be
the impediments in the progress of others from the bhaujan community.
Catholics in Goa have a very strong reason to feel cheated. They do feel
that they were used like cannon fodder when the movement was turning ugly
and the fruits of victory are being enjoyed by the armchair intellectuals
and handful Hindu bahujan writers who never had a base among the masses.
A very few who had potential to be the mass leaders prematurely dwarfed
as they sold their souls for a pittance. Goa being small place, it takes
very little time for the circle to complete! A good thesis can be
written on this issue and I have just tried to scratch the surface. With
malice towards none, I hope all those involved currently in this
controversy will have their thinking hats on and have more egalitarian
attitude towards each other while approaching the issue. No one can kill
Roman Konkani and rather than spreading myths that Roman Konkani will die
its natural death since new generation of Catholics are adapting to
Devanagari, the stalwarts ( Babs), should open their eyes and be fair in
their attitude. How good are you in a Formula One car? Play now

 Original Message
Subject: for the love of Konkani
From:"Pravin Sabnis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date:Wed, July 12, 2006 11:56 pm

--

The controversy over allowing the Konkani language to exist in the Romi
and Kannada scripts is turning ugly, due to unnecessary prejudices.
Prejudice No 1: Roman script is alien
Surely this is a redundant attitude. Most Goans write in Romi-Konkani on
e-mails and SMSs. One may argue that the Devnagri script can be used too,
but for that it is necessary to know how to type it. In fact, how can one
insist that English should be a subject from Std I (the demand was made by
the Samta Andolan at Pedne Parishad) and then persist with the claim that
the Roman script is alien to young minds.
It is pertinent to note that publications and periodicals in the Romi and
the Kannada script are written and read by many. The numbers prove that
public patronage exists for all the scripts. The Devnagri script too, will
flourish, but it does not have to be at the cost of the Romi-script or the
Kannada script.
Prejudice No 2: Single Script strengthens Language
The blockage of the Urdu script has left Hindi poorer. Even today, the
best of Hindi writing comes from people who know both the scripts –
Devnagri as well as Urdu. When we interact with Konkanis from Karnataka or
Kerala, our common language matters, not the accent, not the vocabulary
and definitely not the script.
Konkani has survived all odds over the years along the entire Konkan belt,
due to the plurality of dialect, accent and script. Last year, a Konkani
Yakshagaan performed in the Kala Academy, with the background banner
written in the Kannada script. Discrimination against script will only
create divisions and diversions in the Konkani movement.
Prejudice No 3: Western culture will dominate
This prejudice falls flat in regards to the Kannada script. Regarding the
others, it is observed that the aping of western culture is not restricted
to any one script, community or language. And most importantly "culture"
is not really eastern or western, northern or southern... it is reflected
in the values of democracy, equality, freedom, empathy and humanism.
Yes our ethnic identity is reinforced with the consolidation of our
language, but to insist that the Devnagri script should be thrust upon
people will have its dangerous implications.
Forceful impositions will lead to resistance and even revolt. To “promote”
the Devnagri script, one does not have to “demote” the Romi or Kannada
scripts.
Prejudice No 4: All opposition is anti-Konkani
In supporters of the Romi-script are even described as anti-national. Our
language is one of colourful plurality and it is unfair to view it through
a blinkered “black-or-white” perspective. A few hotheaded, nasty arguments
needed not be the basis to decide that supporters of any one script are
opposing the other. Such chauvinism is best left to the Konkani speaking
Goan who insists that Konkani is a dialect.
Nationalism and national pride are not slaves to any single language or
script. They go beyond, to first recognizing and then accepting, both, our
strengths as well as our weaknesses. Attacking the plural diversity will
wreck all possible unity!
Prejudice No 5: It reinforces arguments of Konkani bashers
Two Mandovi bridges have fallen down, been rebuilt and an entire landscape
has changed, since the official and public recognition of Konkani as a
language of the Konkani people. The use of written Konkani has increased
in leaps and bounds. Literature, theatre, Documentation and development is
taking place in all the major scripts.
This controversy is less to do with language and more to do with economics
that come with the official recognition of the script. The proponents of
Kannada and Romi scripts want their dutiful share of the Sahitya Academy
and other awards and rewards. Some in the Devnagri camp do not want to let
go of the monopoly.
May all Konkani people disregard the divisive arguments and allow Konkani
to flourish in all scripts by patronizing the distinct and unique
plurality of our language. May the sloganeering recede and may the pen and
the ghumat be brought to the fore!

The church is a House of God and it should stay that
way

If you read in the Bible, Jesus himself had driven all
the people who had made the temple as a market place

So why do you all question the House of God to be a
place to make money for the tour guides?

If the visitors want to visit the church, all are
allowed in any church as long as they keep silent and
respect. no one stops anyone entering the church.

I strongly believe that the church should always be
revered as a Holy Shrine and House of God and should
not be used for making money for the guides or anyone
else.

I met Tony in Austria while skiing in 1958 and have had correspondence with
him off and on, until 1980. He is an engineer and lived in Bombay with wife
and children. He vacationed in Goa. I wonder if he is still alive and
if he
lives in Goa full time. I googled his name and your web page came up.

Put yourself in the Priests and Devotees shoes and you
will understand why they have done it.

We all stay in your own houses and give our opinion
without physically experiencing it.

I TOTALLY SUPPORT THIS BAN, AND I THINK THIS MUST HAVE
HAD HAPPENED A LONG TIME AGO

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE PRIESTS AND ALL INVOLVED WHO
HAVE TAKEN THIS DECISION.

because I have had the experience of how non christian
visitors make fun and mockery inside the church. It
happened in front of me and they had to upset when I
requested them to maintain respect in the church in
the same way as they treat their own religion.

Visitors should learn to treat others for the way they
should like to be treated. They may be permitted to
enter in this sacred place of worship on the condition
they maintain silence and respect.

I believe Church is a House of God FIRST (rather than
a historical site) and devotion should be maintained
at all time.

[Goanet] Fwd: Global investors park fund in Goan realty -- from Shiv Kumar

2006-06-28 Thread Herman Carneiro
oreigners in
Bardez taluka alone. Those buying land include nationals of Italy,
Israel, Holland, France, Switzerland, Austria, Spain and even the UAE.

Pressure is now building up on the state government to act against
foreigners taking advantage of new foreign investment laws to set up
companies only to buy property in Goa. Pushed by rising labour costs
following the influx of well-heeled out-of-towners, local industry
particularly the mining lobby is quietly fanning sentiments against
outsiders buying properties in the state.
