Sorry to be the harbinger of bad news, one of our active members of Goanet for
very many years -- Valmiki Faleiro -- passed away suddenly this afternoon
(Thursday, Oct 5, 2023). This came about due to a massive heart attack. The
news came as a shock here.
Valmiki was active in the world of journalism from the 1970s, and has been an
author since 2010. His third book *Goa, 1961* was published in New Delhi
recently and was getting widely noticed. Below is a tribute from the Goa Union
of Journalists, which captures his career in some detail:

Re: [Goanet] Charlie Hebdo... again

2021-06-05 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar
What do you mean by inappropriate comparisons? You have your views and I have
mine! Simple as that.
Also, my views were more related to the cartoon in Charlie Hebdo and whether
they portrayed the events in the West, the same way they were critical of
Indian Gods.

To me, the coverage of the events in the West were definitely not the way
events in India were covered. There was a definite bias.

It was nothing but vulture journalism. Have you seen all the news clips that I
have seen? I don't think so.
BBC's Yogita Limaye went to some remote village in India and covered a hospital
and then followed the family of a dead person to their home.
It was clear to me that she was eliciting responses from the hapless family. Do
you know whether or not they were paid?
I wrote to the BBC about the coverage and never saw any response.
I have seen US reporters elicit responses from the family members that the
reporters wanted to hear.
To me it was evident that they were approaching people at a vulnerable point in
their lives, caring for the sick or cremating a person that has passed away.
Yes, some clips of Italians being treated on the streets were shown, but never
in the scale and fanfare that was associated with the coverage in India.
It was a race among Western networks to show which of them could show more
burning pyres. It was sickening.
Any unbiased coverage is welcome.

I am not condoning the inactions of any politicians. They all need to be held
accountable and punished.

Inappropriate comparisons Naguesh.

Unclaimed bodies in the US in refrigerated trucks does not equal the indignity
of bodies thrown furtively into a major river that supports the livelihood of
many on its banks.

The people being interviewed wanted to talk in anger or disappointment. They
were not coerced or bribed. The Indian media covered it more than their Western
counterparts did. There was a story to be told and everyone who wanted to,
could tell it.

I did not see only vulnerable Indians talking to the media in the midst of
funeral pyres. I also saw affected family who were vulnerable too, in poorer
sections of New York, Toronto and European cities sobbing outside hospitals
where their kith and kin were gasping and dying with those scenes being shown
on BBC, on CNN, on Al Jazeera, on AP and on Australian Broadcasting.

If the Indian press wanted to cover the “sad scenes” in the US, Italy and
France, no one would stop them. They probably don’t do it either because they
don’t have the resources, the international influence or because press with
world reach covers it adequately.

If you saw people being treated on the streets in Italy and other ugly sights
in rich countries, it was because those scenes were covered too.

It was not western versus Indian. It was uncaring and negligent rulers like
Trump, Modi, Bolsonaro et al that exacerbated it versus others who tried their
best but were overwhelmed. Not fighting a fire is the same as wanting it to
spread and kill.

There’s no shame in western media exposing negligence in India. Would you
rather they ignored it and those responsible escaped accountability.

The media does not create the facts or the news, it only photographs it,
records it and writes about it. Would you prefer they be selective about who or
what they reported.

Indians like Islamists seem to be touchy about what is said about them. One
minute we want the light of a superpower, the next minute we want the darkness
enveloping our deficiencies.

Roland.

Many supporters for Charlie Hebdo have highlighted a "Freedom of Speech"
defense, when they were attacked after the original cartoon. And now as well.

What happened with respect to the shortage of oxygen in India, is inexcusable.
Wonder though whether this paper highlighted the plight of Italians, who were
being treated in the streets of their cities or the unclaimed bodies in the US.
This pandemic has put to test the health infrastructure of every country in the
world, including the rich ones.
I saw a video today of Oxygen laden tankers that have no takers in India and
are being parked on the streets.
In the same light there were 750 unclaimed bodies in refrigerated trucks in New
York, even after year.
The Western press made hay, triumphantly walking through the burning pyres in
the crematoriums/crematoria, or on the banks of the Ganges. Or interviewing
vulnerable Indians while the bodies of their loved ones were being cremated. It
was nothing sort of desecration.
I don't believe anyone in the West would let a Press guy broadcast from their
graveyard/cemetery, while hundreds were being buried.
It was a sickening sight. I don't believe that the Indian press got anywhere
close to telecasting the sad scenes in the US or in Italy or France.

It is perhaps easy to mock at India, and its people, with no fear of any
retribution.

>From today’s Washington Post:

Back in November, Ajeet Jain felt like he was living a nightmare. The large
public hospital where he works in India's capital was full of covid-19
patients, hundreds of them so ill they required intensive care. About 10 people
were dying every day. Three months later, the situation is unrecognizable. The
number of coronavirus patients at the hospital can be counted on one hand. Out
of 200 ventilators, only two are in use. Hospitals treating covid-19 patients
around the country report similar experiences. “It’s a big, big relief,” Jain
said.
The apparent retreat of the coronavirus in India, the world’s second-most
populous nation, is a mystery that is crucial to the future course of the
pandemic.Just months ago, India was adding nearly 100,000 cases a day — more
than any other country. On Tuesday, it reported only 8,635. That’s about the
number recorded the same day by New York state, where the population is less
than 2 percent of India’s. Epidemiologists in India say that there is only one
likely explanation for the decrease in new cases: The virus is finding it
harder to spread because a significant proportion of the population, at least
in cities, already has been infected.

The decline is not related to a lack of opportunities for transmission. India
has fully reopened its economy, with elementary schools being the only major
exception. Restaurants, malls and markets are bustling. Masks are common in
some indoor settings and mandatory in Delhi and Mumbai, but in many parts of
the country, they’re scarcely seen on the streets. India has reported 10.8
million coronavirus cases in total, although that is likely to be a vast
undercount. The results of a nationwide antibody survey of 28,600 people by the
government released on Thursday indicated that more than 1 in 5 Indians — about
270 million people — had been exposed to the virus as of early January. —

2020-10-29 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar
There has been no other unpredictable US President than Trump, in recent memory.
Many Indians in the US are supporting Trump, only because of his anti-Muslim
stance. And Trump coddles up to the rich Saudis, as they have helped his
business interests!
He has not said a word about the Khashoggi murder.

If we believe that he is forever going to support India, they are mistaken. All
he wants is business opportunities in India for him and his family.
He is ready to bury anyone that does not help/support him, as can be seen from
his vindictive actions against the likes of Jeff Sessions.
Jeff Sessions, the first Republican Senator to support him in 2016, refused to
defend him as the Attorney General of the US and he unceremoniously booted him
out.
And legally, no Attorney General can defend the President, like a private
lawyer.

I have received WhatsApp messages and writeups, with concerns on how a
Biden-Harris administration could be detrimental to India, just because they
questioned some of the
happenings in India and more particularly related to Kashmir. It is as if the
US is only focused on India!
In general, no US Administration has ever been anti-India, with perhaps Nixon
being an exception. Indira Gandhi at times foolishly crossed swords with the
US, in the
name of Non-Alignment and support of Muslim nations and her anti-Israel stance.
And look at where India is now, with excellent relations with not just Israel,
but even other
Muslim nations of the Middle East.

Shashi Tharoor's assertions/hopes about Biden-Harris raising the Kashmir and
CAA issues, might simply be a dream.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Borowitz Report)—Calling it an “amazingaccomplishment,”

Trump said that he was a “lock”to win the Nobel because of his pioneering work

“I’ve been talking abouthydroxychloroquine so much that a lot of people think I

Now that this nasty virus hasreached Asia's largest slum- Dharavi in Mumbai

of the subject article in Scroll.in may think thathe spoke too soon.
A striking thing about thisvirus is what my doctor told me: Tests in her
hospital indicated that of the 150 people who tested positive for the virus
almost one third were asymptomatic.Infected people are asymptomatic but
contagious while the virus is incubating, which could be a few days. And
reportedly here are infected contagious people who exhibit no symptoms. So she
advised me: Act like everyone you meet is contagious and stay away from any
gatherings like Church services. Apparently most of her Covid 19 patients come
from one church.

New York has been hit hard by thevirus. Governor Andrew Cuomo said the other

additional Hospital capacity.
So it isinteresting to read an article in the New Yorker about their views on

National fishworkers forum(NFF) and Goenchea Ramponkarcho exvott(GRE) extend
solidarity today at New Delhi on Massive rally and protest in Barwani !
Olencio Simoes said vice chairperson of NFF said that Can anyone's ego be
greater than the lives of millions? And Will it always be the People who will
suffer due to mutual vengeance of political parties?
Benefits of development are reaped by one and the consequences of development
are faced by another, do we have no objection to this model?
Will the People always have to struggle for their rights?
The people of Narmada Valley are struggling today amid all these questions! The
entire culture of the Narmada Valley is drowning, hundreds of villages,
animals, millions of trees and crops, thousands of temples and mosques! In such
a situation, ignoring the sinking of the Narmada Valley by the Central
Government raises the question whether the hunger and ego of power is greater
than humanity!

Similarly, on 17 September 2017, the central government had put the model of
such a catastrophe in the name of development, in front of this country, to
commemorate Modi's birthday. On that day, Modi Ji inaugurated the Sardar
Sarovar Dam celebrating the occasion of the height of the Dam reaching 138.68
meters. This year, once again on 17th September Modi Ji will celebrate his
birthday by drowning millions of people and an entire human civilization!

The water level in the dam has reached 138.34. There is an outcry in the
valley, the valley is surrounded in a thick veil of sadness. These millions of
people do not even remember how many days it has been since they have either
slept or eaten properly. Due to such cruelty and arrogance of the government,
the people of the valley are unable to understand that why the representatives
they choose to uplift our country and society are instead drowning them today!
So far no orders have been issued by the government on the decisions taken in
the full-day meeting between the Narmada Bachao Andolan and Madhya Pradesh
administration on 9 September. Because of this, the officials and
administration people coming to the affected area's are not able to take strong
action on various issues. Also, Madhya Pradesh government is falling short in
relief and rescue work. There are many villages where not even a single officer
has reached yet.
The situation in the valley is extremely serious! But even then, if you reach
the valley today you will find a whole different facet of humanity. You will
see more people from the villages than from the administration coming out to
help the people trapped in this devastating situation. People, regardless of
the condition of their house, without even thinking of the water which has
reached the door of their houses, have come out in large numbers to help out
others. Looking at such a view may be your faith in humanity will be restored.

the St Inez Creek is appreciated and preserved for posterity. St. Inez

place. During the high tide the sea water ingresses into the city, bringing
home a rich genetic biodiversity from the estuarine Mandovi river and
during the low tide the inland waters. Due to tidal variations and the flow
of water during inter tidal periods, there is variety of fish like tigur
and other estuarine species, contributing to the food chain as well as
livelihoods of these harnessing bounties of mother nature. St. Inez creek
extends from the Nagali hills of Taleigao plateau to the Old GMC INOX

[Goanet] No takers for 548 seats in state engineering colleges -- From the Navhind Times

2019-08-21 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar
https://navhindtimes.in/no-takers-for-548-seats-in-state-engineering-colleges/

Panaji: As many as 548 seats in five engineering colleges in the state have no
takers, just as the last round of admissions for the All India Council for
Technical Education (AICTE) related courses in Goa, as conducted by the
directorate of technical education ended on August 14.

The 25 per cent hike in the number of seats under the Economically Weaker
Section (EWS) category, in all professional courses, as well as the fear
psychosis spread among the students and their parents, due to the closure of
some industries – especially in the automobile sector – are found to be the
main reasons for this scenario.

Citing reason for almost 35 per cent of the engineering seats available in the
five engineering colleges in Goa remaining vacant, deputy director of technical
education Pradip Kusnur told ‘The Navhind Times’ that some seats in local
engineering colleges were left vacant during the past few years. However, the
number of seats that have remained unfilled is far more this year.

“The jump in this number is due to the 25 per cent rise in EWS category seats,”
Kusnur added, pointing out that although the seats have increased, the
population of the students as well as the number of candidates applying for
these seats, is stable. “The total number of seats in the five local
engineering institutes has gone up this year, from approximately 1,200 to
1,600,” he added.

The Goa College of Engineering (GCE), Farmagudi; the Rayeshwar Institute of
Engineering and Information Technology (RIEIT), Shiroda; the Don Bosco College
of Engineering, Fatorda; the Padre Conceição College of Engineering (PCCE),
Verna, and the Agnel Institute of Technology and Design, Assagao are the five
engineering colleges for which admissions were conducted by the directorate of
technical education.

The RIEIT has 202 seats vacant, the Fatorda-based engineering college has 136
seats unclaimed, the PCCE has 120 unfilled seats, and the Agnel Institute has
90 seats yet to be filled. The Goa College of Engineering, which is the
state-run institute with subsidised fees, is the top favourite amongst
students, with students admitted on all of its seats, this year.

The other three colleges, Indian Institute of Technology-Goa (IIT-Goa), the
National Institute of Technology-Goa (NIT-Goa) and the Birla Institute of
Technology and Science (BITS Pilani) Goa Campus are the other engineering
colleges in Goa. They have their own admission system at all India level.

Meanwhile, principal of Goa College of Engineering Dr Krupashankar M S said
that the reason for students moving away from engineering courses is the bold
headlines on newspapers such as Tata Motors is closing, TVS is closing, and
everybody is running short of orders.

“In fact, the parents are telling me that they are looking at alternative
professions for their children, may be they want their children to pursue other
professions than engineering,” The GEC principal informed this daily, pointing
out, “Although there is no reason for panic, there is panic and we cannot
convince the parents.”

Maintaining that the engineering-jobs related situation is not as bad as it is
made out to be on the all India level, Dr Krupashankar said that the general
perception as regards only 15 per cent of the engineering graduates being
employable, is incorrect.

“Giving example of the GCE itself, I can tell you that last year, 224 job
offers were made, while yesterday alone 38 civil engineering students were
selected from the college, following their interview,” he informed, maintaining
that there are engineering jobs available in certain sectors and in certain
areas, and so we have to look at the sectors that are opening up and not get
worried about only automobile sector or any other particular sector closing
down.

Speaking further the GCE principal observed that so many opportunities are
coming up for the engineering graduates. “The other day we had people coming
from Accenture and they were saying that across India they are going to hire
two lakh people,” he stated, adding that Accenture wanted to hire at least
30-40 students from the GCE, under its Pan India hiring activity.

Incidentally, some parents told this daily that the private engineering
colleges in Goa, running with nonsubsidised fees, have made them rethink on
sending their children to such institutes. “After investing so heavily, up to
Rs 1.5 lakh per year, for four to five years, we have no guarantee that our
children will get a suitable job,” they maintained.

2019-08-10 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar
Kala Academy was built on reclaimed land. I remember the time Charles Correa
was admiring his piece of art, during the inauguration of the complex.
If I remember correctly, there was seepage of underground sea water into the
auditorium, from the beginning and it could not be used for major events for a
long time.
That was 30+ years ago. The salty water might have compromised the strength of
the structure.
The question now boils down to whether or not that structure is strong enough
or will have to be torn down and rebuilt.

Sadly, reclaiming the land on this side of Mandovi river led to the erosion of
two beautiful beaches in our village of Verem/Reis Magos and Keg de Vel.

Alphonsos are currently being sold for C$30 per doz in Toronto’s Indian stores.
You can get the mussarat-like (as large and as sweet) Hayden mangoes from

My personal likes include guava cheese (misnomer) which you get here in nicely

Actually, no. Libia and Vaman Sardessai (later ambassador to Angola and
also editor of Goa Today for awhile) play an active role in running the
India-supported 'clandestine' radio station out of near Castle Rock on the
India-side of the then border.

To my knowledge they were not involved with the Panjim radio station,
though Mrs Lobo-Sardessai has somewhere (if I recall right) spoken about
her role in announcing via hlicopter and calling for peace and calm after

Guess you are forgetting the fact that India was only the 2nd country in the
world, to have a woman as Prime Minister, in Indira Gandhi!!!

The two others during the same time frame were Sirimao Bandaranaike (1960) and
Golda Meir (1969).

Having a woman PM in 1966 was more of pride for India, than having a rather
inept person in the form of Pratibha Patil, as President of India!

Installation of a woman as Defence Minister now, should not be anything

woman as India`s First Defence Minsiter
The message of women empowerment in actions is loud and clear after "beti

India is concerned.
It was Sonia Gandhi who made the first woman speaker of Lokh Sabha and then
installed woman President with great fanfare. The BJP had to do something
similar, spectacular to be seen in the same mould ,if not diffeferent
There are women defence Ministers in Germany, Italy, France, Norway
Denmark, sweeden, Croatia,Ecuador, Philiphines, Australia, Brazil. Canada,
Columbia, etc So our Indian defence Minsiter will have comfortable company
outside It does matter in male dominated Indian culture, how woman defence
Minister will be accepted with hurt pride of men It is argued that Indian
defence Ministry is micromanaged by PMO and Finance Minsitry We have seen
recently that many defence decisions are taken by PMO without even the
defece Minister accompanying as a part of delegation

Re: [Goanet] Heavy rains in Mumbai

2017-08-30 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar
It is true that India is not good at providing or improving a proper
infrastructure, more due to corruption...

After New Orleans was flooded during Katrina in 2005, a lot of money went into
improving the infrastructure...

They built new pumping stations and improved the levees However, just a
couple of week's ago, many of these pumps failed during a

major storm and New Orleans was flooded again And they are yet to be
fixed!...

And with heavy rains expected due to Harvey, the city will face similar
flooding

When 2 major cities in the US can hardly handle the wrath of nature, it is not
surprising that a city like Mumbai, with such a large population and a poor
infrastructure, is impacted

Of course, the Mumbaikars and India deserve better.

I remember that it was the rains and flooding in 2005 that a friend walked
home through knee-deep water and got pneumonia. He was an asthmatic and
having pneumonia made it worse. He died a few days later.
Seeing the images on TV makes me both sad and angry. The lessons of 2005
were not learnt. Promoting Mumbai as India's financial city and a great
metropolis is of no use when the basic infrastructure is week and
vulnerable to such floods. No doubt, Houston also underwent chaos and death
due to Hurricane Harvey. I believe natural disasters happen.
But I must say that Mumbai sewage system is outdated. In my young days,
heavy rains had the low-lying areas all flooded. But now even South Mumbai
is not spared. The municipality is not keeping up with the rising
population. A disaster such as the one that happened could strike one day,
and it happened with devastating result.
Yeah, TV news harped on "Maximum City", the book which profiled Mumbai. I
read the book, which is tittled Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found, by
Suketu Mehta, when it came out. The US-based Mehta painted Bombay in all
its colours, having stayed in the city for sometime to do the book.
Bombay Meri Hai.. whatever happens to the city, the city will live on.

To call Parrikar a 'joker" is like hitting him below the belt. In politics,
winning is everything. How one wins can be debatable and can be said to be
wrongly done or not. Just like the BJP pulled the rug from under the feet
of the Congress. It formed a coalition with Goa Forward. This is the age of
coalition politics.
In Canada too when a party less the required votes to have absolutely
majority, it goes for support by the other parties such as New Democratic
Party (NDP), Bloc or, as it happened be its main rival party,
Conservatives.
Parrikar is shrewd, perhaps one can go to the extreme and say he's cunning.
He knows to make deals, as can be seen how he got Goa Forward on board by
offering ministerships to those elected on GF party.
If Parrikar had lost in Panaji, it would be a miracle. No doubt, Girish
gave him a good fight and we should congratulate him for that. If Parrikar
has failed Panaji, as some have pointed out, I wouldn't expect him to win.
Maybe, Panaji has BJP supporters. See Rane, who had won on Congress ticket
and now on BJP ticket. Personal equations matter.

I don't believe that frequent sacking of coaches alone, has harmed hockey in
the subcontinent...Apart from political interference, to a great extent, the
use of artificial surfaces and a drastic change in rules, has contributed to
itTake for example the 'sticks' infringement Previously, no player was
allowed to raise his stick above his shoulder to strike the ballNow when
one watches hockey, the tall, burly players from Europe and Australia raise the
stick and strike the ball with such force, that it is hard to watch! The
goalkeepers of today, need protection like goaltenders of Ice Hockey!... Many
times, it appears that the players are dragging the ball alonginstead of the
beautiful dribbling, that we used to marvel atIt is now all about power
hockey, instead of the finesse associated with Indianand Pakistani
playersIndian and Pakistani hockey officials remained silent spectators to
the change of rules by the FIH, while they were busy feudingamong themselves or
swindling the money!!!.
I once met 2 Dutch badminton coaches, at the Campal Indoor stadium. They told
me that the kids in the Netherlands, always played badminton on Hova courtsand
their hockey on astroturf!!!... As for the Indian badminton players, the Hova
courts were laid for them, only when they practiced for international events
and forhockey, we had 1 and a half fields of astroturf, in the entire
country Now there might be more...Playing regularly on these artificial
surfaces meant that your leg muscles developed differently, as compared to the
wooden/cement surfaces for badminton and natural grass for hockey...All Indian
investments have been in cricket and football is starting to get some
investment...It remains to be seen whether this new stick helps the players
from the subcontinent or the Europeans!

How can a Government initiate a judicial probe, in an event involving two
private individuals/entities -- in this case, a private newspaper and a citizen
of Goa?
Will you not be playing into the hands of the Government and the very
politicians, you are supposed to keep a tab on???.
If GUJ and your fellow newsmen, cannot keep tabs on one your own fraternity,
how will you be patrolling the misdeeds of these politicians?...A judicial

happened during the days of Emergency, in the 1970s.

http://www.oheraldo.in/News/Main%20Page%20News/Panjim-wastes-12-000m3-water-daily/64003.htmlPanjim
 wastes 12,000m3 water dailySeptember 4, 2012
JULIAN D’CRUZjulian@herald-goa.comPANJIM: At a time when every single drop of
water has been termed as precious by the state government, which aims to
provide 24x7 supply, up to 12,000 cubic meters (or 12 MLD) of water treated at
the sewerage plant at Tonca is flushed out into River Mandovi every single
day.The water is so clean that just one tertiary unit more of treatment at the
plant would make it fit to drink by even Singapore standards. But as it is, the
water is waiting to be used at least for gardening, washing and other such
purposes. Except that the authorities prefer to, literally, just flush it down
the river. Never mind, that the world over, empirical evidence and highly
credible reports from even the United Nations speak of impending ‘water wars’
because of the increasing scarcity of this most vital of natural resources —
bureaucratic nitpicking in these parts combined with a lack of will to work out
a scheme that would facilitate sale of this water and revenue generation is
resulting in a colossal waste of water. So good is the quality of the treated
water that the plant, which began operations way back in 2005, initially used
to drain the treated water into the nearby St Inez rivulet to dilute bacteria
contamination in it.The plant is now running to its full capacity of 12.5 MLD
and at times an overload of 18 MLD and discharges the treated water into the
river through a special line laid for the purpose between St Inez and Campal.
“This is a waste of water,” admits a top Public Works Department (PWD) official
who told Herald that utilization of this water for gardening and household
chores-- at the very least by domestic consumers, hotels and industries-- would
definitely save the state’s drinking water which gets diverted for these
auxiliary purposes at present. It was pointed out that at least 20 per cent of
the water supplied through the existing distribution lines would be saved
daily. if treated water from the sewer treatment plant was provided to
consumers. “We do give some of this water to the Corporation of the City of
Panaji (CCP) and the Forest Department for its gardens but this is a negligible
quantum,” says Assistant Engineer Tulsidas Shirodkar who handles operations at
the plant. In fact, Superintending Engineer of PWD KS Srikant, who used to
handle operations at the plant earlier, asserted, “One more unit of tertiary
treatment and this water will be fit for drinking.” “The quality of water
treated at the plant would match the quality of that produced by an STP (sewer
treatment plant) in Singapore and consumed by its locals there. The technology
used at the Tonca plant is one that gives high-quality treated water by using
the sequential batch reactor treatment technique.”Herald has learnt that the
PWD has been thinking of ‘approaching industries’ to sell its treated water but
all that has happened till now is that files have been tossed from one table to
another. There is another plant at Patto, of 0.5 MLD capacity, and the treated
water from there too is discharged into the river. PWD has now finalized plans
for another sewer treatment plant, also at Tonca of 15 MLD capacity, that will
be using the same treatment technology to process waste water from Dona Paula
and Taleigao. But again, unless the treated water is supplied to households,
industries, hotels and gardens, there would be no other option but to flush
12-13 MLD of treated water into the river, said an official.

The Curiosity rover has barely settled into its new home, but may be getting
some company soon as India now says it want to get intothe Mars exploration
business. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced today that the country is
planning to send an unmanned probe into orbit around the red planet with a
launch scheduled for next year. The country sent a similar spacecraft to the
moon in 2008 and Singh also suggested it might send it's own lunar roverthere
as well...Some might question whether a 4.5 billon rupee
(around $82 million) space launch makes sense for a country that can barely
keep its own lights on, though Singh also addressed the power issue in
Wednesday's speech. He announced a target to have electricty in every Indian
household with in five years and to beef up the nation's electric grid, which
failed spectuarly just two weeks ago, knocking out power to more than 600
million people. But as Americans are well aware, politicians love making bold
plans (especially in outer space) and talking about the future rarely hurts
anyone. Today is the 65th anniversary of India's independence from Britain,
which explains the dream big theme of Singh's big speech.

[Goanet] Two Sao Joao revellers drown

2012-06-25 Thread Naguesh Bhatcar

It saddens me to read each year, about these deaths during this feast...
http://www.navhindtimes.in/goa-news/two-sao-joao-revellers-drown
Wonder if there are any means of preventing such drownings...Many of the
participants are too drunk, to comprehend the dangers of jumping into these
wells, which are at very high levels at this time of the year...It might be a
tall task for the likes of the Police and Fire Brigade to cover, but presence
of lifeguards at such events, could be considered...I don't know if each Goan
village organizes this event, but a collective effort at the village level with
all necessary precautions, might help...
