[Goanet] The First Indian: Story of the First Indian Solo Circumnavigation under Sail’ by Cdr. Dilip Donde ON SATURDAY 28TH MARCH AT 7 P.M.
LITERATI INVITES YOU TO A BOOK READING OF ‘The First Indian: Story of the First Indian Solo Circumnavigation under Sail’ by Cdr. Dilip Donde ON SATURDAY 28TH MARCH AT 7 P.M. ELIAS PATEL WILL BE IN CONVERSATION WITH CDR. DILIP DONDE On 27 Apr 2006, Cdr Dilip Donde volunteered for ‘Project Sagar Parikrama’, an endeavour that involved building a sail boat in India and circumnavigating the earth alone in the boat. As he candidly admits in his book, he volunteered for the project out of sheer passion and with absolutely no idea of what he was getting himself into. But as he soon discovered, he wasn’t alone in his ignorance on the subject; it was shared by over a billion Indians. Essentially by volunteering for this project, Cdr Donde had thrown himself in the deep end of the pool without bothering to enquire about swimming lessons. However, he did manage to keep his head above the water and that is what his book is about. Over 170 people had completed a solo circumnavigation till then, so in a way Cdr Donde was treading a somewhat beaten path. The crucial difference was that he was trying to do it in India, with an almost total ignorance of the subject, an inherent inertia against anything new and an intransigent and quixotic bureaucracy. On finishing his trip, most people he met wanted to hear about his experiences at sea, not comprehending that the hard work put in for over three years, before starting, was responsible for his safe return. The story of Sagar Parikrama would have been incomplete without talking about those three years. For Cdr Donde those years were as exciting as, and often more unpredictable than, sailing the Southern Ocean. As he looks back on his journey from volunteering for the project to finishing the circumnavigation, he unravels a number of plots and sub plots in the story with him being the only constant. His book, therefore, is an attempt to tell the whole story as he lived through it. The book is an engrossing narrative about a man’s struggle to achieve his objectives against all odds. It is a story of how he could do, what he set out to do, with a firm belief in himself and a desperate will to succeed. It also talks about the inevitable highs lows that he went through in making his dream a reality. As he progressed he kept meeting well-meaning and accomplished people like Sir Robin Knox - Johnston, the first man to sail solo and nonstop around the world, Mr Ratnakar Dandekar, a boat builder who was ready to take a huge gamble in building a sailboat with no past experience in sailboat construction and many others. They readily helped him as they believed in him and genuinely wanted him to succeed, eventually becoming a close knit team. Cdr Donde started blogging two days after starting his path breaking voyage. His posts on http://sagarparikrama.blogspot.in got him avid followers who tracked his every move, lived through every storm and sailed into every sunset with him. In his own words, the single biggest challenge was neither the boat building nor sailing solo through the Southern Ocean. It was to keep believing that the project will happen, notwithstanding the odds stacked against it. While he was not the first person to have been given the opportunity to do the project, he was definitely the first to grab it. As he reflects, had he not done so, he would have rued the lost opportunity for the rest of his life. Not having to do so is his biggest reward from the project. The story of ‘Project Sagar Parikrama’ is an Indian success story too. Here was a truly path breaking project that met all deadlines, exceeded its aims, stayed under budget, wrote a new chapter in the Maritime History of India while leaving a proud legacy and a million dollar worth of hardware for the future generations. ‘The First Indian’ is a riveting tale of all this and more from the mouth of the trailblazer himself. The book, published in August 2014, has had a very successful run and received warm accolades from the press as well as the reading public. ABOUT THE BOOK Few of us have the panache to put in our papers, free ourselves from our desks, and take off on a half-year-long trip along the coastal necklace of peninsular India. This richly-flavoured travelogue combines adventure, serendipity, food, and sheer joie de vivre. The narrative irresistibly draws us in as benevolent observers of the many facets and foibles of humanity. Living out of a backpack, in budget lodgings, and eating bananas as a staple, only add to the heady challenges that stimulate the spirit of wanderlust of this maverick-explorer. The tour diary, starting from the remote north-western coastal tip and climaxing, rather precariously, way above sea-level at the potentially sinister Indo-Tibetan border, is an engrossing chronicle of discoveries about the desires, views, tribulations, joys, and sheer zest for living, of the teeming millions of India. Thrown in for good measure, in a refreshingly tongue-in-cheek style, are recipes for some of the gastronomic delights offered in the places traversed. Itinerant sidelights about people of all classes and creeds - fishermen, seafarers, rickshaw-drivers, priests, salesmen, radicals, typical and atypical families, and all the rest - create a colourful kalaidescope that is quintessentially India. This book is as enjoyable and energising as a good cup of chai..

[Goanet] LITERATI INVITES YOU TO AN EVENING WITH RENOWNED FILMMAKER WARIS HUSSEIN ON FRIDAY 16TH JANUARY 2015 AT 7 P.M. AT LITERATI
WARIS HUSSEIN IN CONVERSATION WITH SHAMA HABIBULLAH LITERATI INVITES YOU TO AN EVENING WITH RENOWNED FILMMAKER WARIS HUSSEIN ON FRIDAY 16TH JANUARY 2015 AT 7 P.M. AT LITERATI A COMPILATION OF HIS WORKS WILL BE SCREEENED FOLLOWED BY CONVERSATION. Born in Lucknow, India, Waris Hussein moved to England at age nine with his parents. He studied at Eton, Cambridge and the Slade School of Fine Art. Later he briefly worked as an actor before being accepted on the BBC directors' training course. He made his directorial debut on the soap Compact (BBC, 1962-65) but only gained real recognition after helping to launch Doctor Who (BBC, 1963-89; 2005- ) in partnership with producer Verity Lambert. Hussein was instrumental in selecting the original cast and establishing the template for the show by directing the pilot story 'An Unearthly Child' (tx. 23/11/1963). This already contained many characteristics that would recur throughout his work: elaborate tracking shots, a fondness for depicting protagonists isolated from their surroundings and a special interest in female psychology. This is particularly evident in 'A Passage to India' (Play of the Month, tx. 16/11/1965). One of his few works to directly address his Asian heritage, it depicts with typical sensitivity the plight of outsiders on both sides of the racial divide. After starting in television with work on Doctor Who [1] (1963) (including directing the very first episode, Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child [2] (1963)), Hussein moved on to film, directing such legends as Lord Laurence Olivier [3], Dame Bette Davis [4] and Joan Plowright [5]. Hussein directed feature films, starting with A Touch of Love (1969), Margaret Drabble'smoving story about a single mother, featuring a gratifyingly unmannered performance by Sandy Dennis. This was followed by the eccentric but warm-hearted comedy Quackser Fortune has a Cousin in the Bronx (US, 1970), the box-office hit Melody (aka S.W.A.L.K., 1971) which re-unitedMark Lester and Jack Wild from Oliver! (d. Carol Reed, 1968), and The Possession of Joel Delaney (1971), an unusual and intriguing New York-set horror tale that was barely released. Like so many British films of the 1970s, Henry VIII and his Six Wives (1972) was made to capitalise on the success of a television series (The Six Wives of Henry VIII, BBC, 1970) and proved to be his final cinema project for 25 years. He received a BAFTA award [6] for _Edward and Mrs. Simpson_ (shared with producer Andrew Brown), and an Emmy Award [7] for the Barry Manilow musical _Copacabana_ [8]__ While considering himself a British filmmaker, Hussein has worked both sides of the Atlantic, as well as in the country of his birth, India. LITERATI INVITES YOU TO THE RELEASE OF GAYZI ZINE ON FRIDAY 5TH DEC AT 7 P.M. AT LITERATI There should be a Bollywood song for every emotion, don't you agree? Right now, we are feeling a Dhak dhak karne laga' vibe. With our latest pet project almost completed, and fresh copies of The Gaysi Zine ready to spread queer love, we are anxious and thrilled. The Gaysi Zine project has been like a roller coaster ride; a cliché ridden phrase in every other situation maybe, but oh so apt for our journey. We have produced a work that marries text with visuals and spins yarns that will hopefully stay with you after you have shut the book. So how do we make merry after all the hard work? Well, away we go! We have decided to pack our bags and travel the country with our beloved baby and second on the stop? It's the land of sorpotel and feni y'all! What better timing to celebrate queer stories than the sweet ending of the year? So come join in our pre- holiday festivity. It only makes sense to come to the place where art is celebrated in every sense of the word. We will have readers reading out passages from the Zine and other queer literature. We will break down the themes that we have explored in the Zine; Love, Desire, Memories, Discovery and more. Besides this, we have a few games in mind for you. Over cups of tea and sandwiches, tell us what stories/ illustrations stood out for you. We can't wait to get to Calangute, sink our feet into the pristine sands and party with our friends in Goa. So make a scribble in your calendar and save the dates queer folks! -

[Goanet] Launch of Clear Hold Build by Sudeep Chakravarti on Sat 11 Oct at 7 p.m.
LITERATI AND HARPER COLLINS INDIA INVITE YOU TO THE LAUNCH OF _CLEAR HOLD BUILD_ BY _SUDEEP CHAKRAVARTI_ ON SATURDAY 11TH OCT AT 7 P.M. AT LITERATI. DEAN D'CRUZ WILL BE IN CONVERSATION WITH THE AUTHOR. REVIEW IN BUSINESS STANDARD (DELHI + OTHER METROS) In a world where business goes head-to-head with human rights, _Clear Hold Build _ [1]offers a timely look at 21st century India's human rights flashpoints - Vedanta, Tata Steel, Posco, Kudankulam and more. Sudeep Chakravarti [2] uses his formidable journalistic skills to collate and analyse testimonies of local stakeholders and senior executives, activists, and bureaucrats across conflict zones in India to paint a provocative and hard-hitting picture of market forces trumping the needs of communities that get in their way. Mr Chakravarti's insistence on highlighting the human face of corporate progress isn't just timely, it's overdue...Although human rights remains a much maligned word amongst Indian corporates, Mr Chakravarti has sought to bring it to the forefront, start a national-level debate and eventually alter the ways in which corporates and governments interact with local communities...he offers several interesting pointers for responsible business planning and policymaking. No wonder, then, that the book has already made it to the reference list at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad!..._Clear Hold Build _is a fascinating...thought-provoking read. - _BUSINESS STANDARD_ HINDUSTAN TIMES (DELHI, MUMBAI, KOLKATA) Sudeep Chakravarti's new book offers a checklist of human rights for government and big business. This, he believes, will reduce conflict with local communities. A balanced book with excellent reportage from areas that have been flashpoints of resistance, _Clear.Hold.Build_ points out that it makes economic sense for businesses to be considerate when it comes to issues of land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation. -_HINDUSTAN TIMES___ TEHELKA Here is a spirited riposte to the cloyingly smooth and dangerously apathetic tales that are told about big business and its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Sudeep Chakravarti rips apart the shibboleth of lies that surrounds the actual reality regarding flashpoints such as Vedanta, Tata Steel, Posco and Kudankulam, and this surely is highly valuable reportage with strong analytical inputs...the metaphor of our distressingly myopic times has been effectively brought out in this riveting narrative...devastatingly written... -- _TEHELKA_ BLOG BY DR RISHIKESHA KRISHNAN, DIRECTOR, INDIAN INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT-INDORE (FORMER PROF OF CORPORATE STRATEGY, IIM-BANGALORE) From Jugaad to Systemic Innovation (4 October 2014) http://jugaadtoinnovation.blogspot.in/2014/10/clear-hold-build-prompts-fresh-look-at.html [3] MILLENNIUM POST (DELHI) Citizens of (India) have for long been force-fed a certain idea about development and have been blinded into believing that anyone opposed to it is an enemy of the state and the Constitution of the country. Chakravarti's book is an eye-opener to how the proponents of this idea of development flout norms and constitutional tenets - the very aspects they seek refuge under when questioned for accountability...He shows us how gullible stakeholders are manipulated and made to pay the price for development...Unlike a lot of literature on government and corporate world functioning in conflict zones, this book offers solutions too...Chakravarti's book must be read by all those who have taken sides in this great divide of state vs non state. We might just stumble upon certain unexplored ideas and unseen facts. - _MILLENNIUM POST___ PRESS TRUST OF INDIA (ALL INDIA) How can these conflicts, that cost billions of dollars to businesses apart from thwarting Indian economy and fuelling Maoist rebellion, be minimised and possibly avoided? 'Free, prior and informed consent' of not just governments and corporations but also of the project-affected-communities should be a must before MoUs are inked in Delhi, suggests Chakravarti. However, Chakravarti's argument buttressing the importance of 'free, prior, informed consent' is not just a moral argument but also a business one. More than anything it makes good business sense, writes Chakravarti, to minimise areas of conflict with project-affected-communities and ensure force is not used even by governments for land acquisition process, as locals often see administration as an extension of corporate will. - PRESS TRUST OF INDIA See you at Literati! __ - Links: -- [1] http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news|+|amp|+|q=Clear+Hold+Build [2] http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news|+|amp|+|q=Sudeep+Chakravarti [3] http://jugaadtoinnovation.blogspot.in/2014/10/clear-hold-build-prompts-fresh-look-at.html

- BUSINESS STANDARD _Sudeep Chakravarti's new book offers a checklist of human rights for government and big business. This, he believes, will reduce conflict with local communities. A balanced book with excellent reportage from areas that have been flashpoints of resistance, Clear.Hold.Build_ points out that it makes economic sense for businesses to be considerate when it comes to issues of land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation. -_HINDUSTAN TIMES_ Links: -- [1] http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news|+|amp|+|q=Clear+Hold+Build [2] http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news|+|amp|+|q=Sudeep+Chakravarti

[Goanet] Launch of Daughter By Court Order by Ratna Vira - at Literati on Saturday 28th June at 6.30 p.m.
LITERATI AND FINGERPRINT INVITE YOU TO THE GOA BOOK LAUNCH OF DAUGHTER BY COURT ORDER ON SATURDAY 28TH JUNE AT 6.30 P.M. AT LITERATI THE AUTHOR _RATNA VIRA_ WILL BE IN CONVERSATION WITH _KARAN BHAGAT_ DAUGHTER BY COURT ORDER JUST DON'T TALK ABOUT WOMEN EMPOWERMENT. BE THE CHANGE! India Infoline News Team / 11:34, 07-Jun-14 [1] AUTHOR: Ratna Vira _PUBLISHED BY FINGERPRINT_ Fingerprint is delighted to bring to you _Daughter by Court Order _by Ratna, an inspiring and emotional account of a woman who fights her own mother in order to preserve her identity. _Daughter by Court Order _is the tale of one woman's valiant battle against her mother's unjustified and unwarranted vengeance. It's the heart-wrenching tale of her struggle to win back her rights from her mother's manipulative tricks. This is the story of a woman fighting against power, money, deceit, and treachery for her right to be recognized as a daughter. A daughter by court order . . . Ratna holds a masters degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science, as well as a masters in English Literature from St Stephen's College, University of Delhi and is the daughter of senior journalist Nalini Singh and SPN Singh. ABOUT THE BOOK A seemingly innocuous remark over an innocent cup of tea, and Aranya discovers that her family has been fighting a decade-long legal battle over her grandfather's expansive estate. And all this while, they not only kept her in the dark, but they also kept her very existence out of the court's knowledge! A cesspool of emotions, half-truths, betrayals, and the unspooling of long buried dirty family secrets threaten to overpower Aranya and disrupt what modicum of peace and balance she has in her life as a single mother of two children. At the centre of this storm is the one woman who, ever since the day Aranya was born, has had nothing but curses and abuses for her; who has deliberately kept her name out of the court; who has wished her dead for every day of her life; who refuses to now remember her birth. The woman who is her mother. Her own mother. This is the story of a woman fighting against power, money, deceit, and treachery for her right to be recognised as a daughter. A daughter by court order . . . AN EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Life changes in a moment, but we don't always see it coming. Aranya, or Arnie as everyone called her, didn't. It was just after eight on a particularly hot summer morning. Angry at being disturbed, the woman did not attempt to hide her annoyance at seeing Arnie. Her tacky nightclothes were in sharp contrast to the ultra chic black chiffon sari flung carelessly on the bed, the blouse merely a string bikini revealing more than it covered and glistening with Swarovski crystals that winked as they caught the light. The flimsy covering was still damp with her perspiration and her perfume taunted Arnie for her naïveté. Arnie thought the woman must have been all smiles, sophisticated and soft-spoken, bejewelled and dressed to kill, at the President's _At__ __Home_. Arnie had seen this played out several times and continued to watch her, mesmerised. Her resemblance to Goddess Kali was striking--large red _bindi_, heavily-_kohled__ _eyes even at this hour, long hair that was flying and blowing out in all directions in the blast of the air conditioner. Strands of hair framed her face like irate serpents, which reminded Arnie of another angry Goddess, this time Medusa from the Percy Jackson movie. Her pencil-thin lips disappeared as she leered, mocking Arnie for asking questions. She was in a terrible rage and Arnie watched as though in a trance, trapped by her hypnotic snake-like eyes. Her words were like physical blows and hurt just as much, but Arnie heard them with a slight delay, like a bad DVD where the lip sync is off by a few seconds. She shouted and hurled abuses, unusually vicious even by her standards, as Arnie watched, stunned and feeling small, dwarfed yet again, her stomach tightening into a ball. In her mind, Arnie had curled into a safe foetal position, covering her face with her hands as she tried to block out the attack. _Kutiya_! she screamed. You want to put your father and me on the road? I am alive and will not let your evil plans succeed. You want him dead? You will not succeed, _haramzadi_. You should have died in that bloody incubator. I would have done it but my father warned me that this would not go unnoticed in France and that bloody social worker person made my life miserable asking all those questions. Then Baby Singh came to get you and made you just like her, the misery of my life. She has gotten her revenge! I am left with an imbecile, an idiot like you, the tragedy of my life. I have important calls to make, the government may fall, the famous director wants to cast me in his next film, but here I am wasting my time with you! She was shouting so loudly now that Arnie was worried her mother might

SYSTEMIC CONSTELLATIONS Finding Love's Hidden Harmony FRIDAY 4TH APRIL 2014 FROM 4.45PM TO 7PM Venue: Literati Bookshop Cafe, Near ABC Farms, Gaura Vaddo, Calangute. Admission : Free! Family Constellations reveal the hidden dynamics and family loyalties that keep us rooted in unhealthy or destructive patterns. Unconsciously, we may be reliving our mother's anxiety or repeating our father's disappointments. We may be replicating the failed relationships of our parents and grandparents. Or even taking on the same illnesses. Just as we inherit our physical characteristics from our ancestors, we also inherit the residue from events that have taken place in our family. These events may have been traumatic or had no effective resolution. Illness, depression, anxiety, unhappy relationships and financial challenges can all be forms of this unconscious inheritance. _ _ _WHAT YOU INHERITED DIDN'T START WITH YOU,_ _BUT YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE --__‐___ _IT CAN END WITH YOU._ __ FACULTY: Annie Cariapa is a psychotherapist and has a Hellinger Sciencia diploma in Family Constellation Movement of the Spirit Mind. She continues to update her skills and participate in Systemic/ Family Constellation in several training programmes in Germany, including with Bert Hellinger (the founder of Family constellation work). [Goanet] And What Remains in the End by Robin Gupta - Sat 28th Sept at 6.30 pm
Literati cordially invites you to the launch of AND WHAT REMAINS IN THE END The Memoirs of an Unrepentant Civil Servant (A Rupa Publication) by ROBIN GUPTA On Saturday 28th Sept.2013 at 6:30p.m. at Literati Book Shop Cafe Please join us for Refreshments after the launch RSVP: Savia 0832 2277740 May 16, 2013:rasheeda.bha...@thehindu.co.in Some books leave you with a deep sense of sadness- even while they make you chuckle, marvel at the beauty or tenderness of a thought or human emotion, sit up and take note of a piece of poetic prose, rich imagery or a full-bodied character. Robin Gupta's And What Remains in the End - ; The Journey of an Unrepentent Civil Servant (Rupa) does all this. At one level it is the memoirs of an IAS officer with 36 years in India's civil service. Like all good memoirs, the book leaves you with full-dimensional character, painted in deft strokes and vibrant colours, with shades of grey as well. But Gupta's book is more than the ruminations of a bureaucrat in a service that has been, during Independent India's 66 years, woefully entangled in the mire of greed, arrogance, depravity, petty politics, power play and worse. In scintillating prose, the author gives us rich images of the nooks and corners of India - Delhi, West Bengal (Gupta's home cadre), Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab - where he served as an IAS officer. In this honest account, the corruption, sycophancy and chicanery, on which the bulk of our babu-dom thrives, comes through. Gupta, a 1974 batch officer, is different from the bulk of his colleagues, perhaps because of his pedigree, upbringing and values. The narrative is strung together with his myriad postings. As he refuses to kowtow to higher powers and passes orders on merit, does not entertain requests from his political bosses, and shows flashes of arrogance and highhandedness, sometimes in an inebriated state - if there was ever a child of Bacchus, it was him! - he faces a plethora of transfers. And like others before him, has to cool his heels in insignificant postings. ... ... The greatest merit of Gupta's memoirs, apart from the racy style, and sensitive and poignant manner in which he relates the story, is his basic honesty and humour. There isn't any visible attempt to dress up anything. The pages are dotted with Gupta's drunken interludes and orgies, including his socking a policeman and breaking his teeth, when a group of them demanded a bribe as he was driving under the influence of alcohol. They refuse to believe he was an IAS officer as he lived in his family house in a posh area in Delhi. .. We get interesting snapshots of politicians. Narasimha Rao's flawless French and austere living; Zail Singh's kindness; Devi Lal's warmth and astute governance, his son Chautala's violent temper and fits of uncontrollable rage, and his penchant to physically assault legislators and insult senior officers. And of cities too. In Calcutta, Government files were works of art. It had a large Muslim population and excellent Mughlai food. But the veneer of secularism that I witnessed in the upper echelons of Calcutta society erupted sporadically, through subtle nuances in conversation rather than any violent exchange. I found a deep distrust between Hindus and Muslims alike. Gupta gives the readers a startlingly close look at the various layers that hide inefficiency, sloth, corruption, high handedness, nepotism and worse in the way India is governed. And all this is related in effortless prose, a tone that is neither sanctimonious nor bitter, but sometimes philosophical. Of his meteoric rise in the Punjab cadre, he says it ends on a rather low octave owing to my failure to grasp the dynamics of success and his rigid stand on issues, and biting replies to MLAs. Without the bottle and philosophy as his constant companions, and of course his mother who goes on to live for 100 years and is a rock of support to the single officer, his constant incarceration in the service would have been difficult to digest. The book is full of hilarious anecdotes - as tragic as they are comic. For instance, when as Forests Secretary in Punjab, he refuses to allow the ecologically fragile bit of forest in the Shivalik area to be developed into modern hosing colonies on the periphery of Chandigarh, both the CM and advocate general are not amused. Asking him to reverse his opinion, the latter writes with biting sarcasm: You are being dramatic. I understand that you are a poet, a writer, and occasionally an administrator. Be practical. And may I suggest to you, as a supporter of our government, to get hold of some land in this area for your retirement home? It is close enough to the golf course and the clubhouse has a good watering hole. Refusal to comply ends his stint; Gupta returns to the department

[Goanet] Suniti Namjoshi on Sat 17th at 5.30 p.m. at Literati
TULIKA PUBLISHERS IN ASSOCIATION WITH GOA UNIVERSITY INVITES YOU TO AN EVENING WITH SUNITI NAMJOSHI, POET, FABULIST AND CHILDREN'S WRITER AT LITERATI ON SAT 17TH AUG 2013 AT 5.30 p.m. JEET THAYIL, NOVELIST AND POET WILL INTRODUCE SUNITI WHO WILL READ FROM HER BOOK BLUE OTHER STORIES FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION ON WRITING FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN Online edition of India's National Newspaper Sunday, February 20, 2000 Feminism, one of her voices Don't be silly, darling. Only little boys grow up to be Emperors. As for little girls, they marry emperors; and they learn to hold their tongue, particularly on the subject of the Emperor's clothes. The Lesson She was indeed blessed with great ability. But everyone in the village was critical of her. To be so damned good, they said, is not womanly. The Gods There was once a man who thought he could do anything, even be a woman. So he acquired a baby, changed its diapers and fed the damn thing three times a night. He did all the housework, was deferential to men, and got worn out. But he had a brother, Jack Cleverfellow, who hired a wife, and got it all done. The Tale of Two Brothers, Feminist Fables Suniti Namjoshi is best known as the author of Feminist Fables. First published in 1981, the book, which has been lauded as a minor feminist classic, is a superb retelling of myths and legends. The Arabian Nights, English nursery rhymes, tales from Indian epics, fairy tales and the Greek myths are all grist to the gifted writer to comment on the female condition. Having done her schooling at Rishi Valley, which taught her to examine everything she saw with fresh eyes, Suniti went on to become a lecturer at the University of Poona. She passed the IAS in 1964. Soon after she took study leave to do her Masters in Public Administration from the University of Missouri, Columbia, U.S.. She resigned from service and obtained her Ph.D on poet Ezra Pound from McGill University, Canada. In 1978 she went to England where the feminist and gay liberation movement influenced her greatly. From 1987, Namjoshi devoted herself to writing full time. A brilliant body of work, marked by sparkling wit, word play and inventive power, emerged: Seven volumes of verse among them Cyclone In Pakistan, The Jackass And The Lady, The Authentic Lie, and From The Bedside Book Of Nightmares; Verses and Fables: St. Suniti And The Dragon, Feminist Fables, The Blue Donkey Fables and Because Of India. Fiction: Aditi And The One-Eyed Monkey (for children), The Conversation of Cow and The Mothers Of Maya Diip. Suniti has collaborated with Gillian Hanscombe on a collection of poetry Flesh And Paper and on a play Kaliyug - Circles Of Paradise. Suniti lives and works in Devon, U.K.. Building Babel, her most recent book is about building cultures. Here, she once again plays brilliantly with characters from stories and myths. It is up on the Internet to enable maximum writer-reader interaction. Suniti is above all a poet. For her, poetry is the framework of reference. She believes ... the techniques and considerations that apply to poetry, if properly understood, can then be given a much wider application. The writer regards change and renewal as essential to her creativity. . ...

[Goanet] WORLD BUSK - FRIDAY 14th JUNE 5 p.m.
Dear music-lover, It's that time of year again: World Busk! (http://worldbusk.org/). Between 10-16 June, musicians around the world will busk (make music in public places to raise money for charity) for Musequality (http://musequality.org/) which supports music charities around the world such as ours, Child's Play (India) Foundationwww.childsplayindia.org. We are proud to say that we at Child's Play have participated in World Busk since its inception in 2009! We have been a solitary pinpoint on the Indian subcontinent on the World Busk map for years, in contrast to the pin-cushion in Europe, the UK, North America and Australia and NZ. This year, we will have two events: 1. Our traditional eclectic music event at Literati bookshop, Calangute (http://literati-goa.com/) on 14 June 2013 from 5 pm onwards. Our heartfelt thanks to Diviya Kapur for making us so welcome every year. Here, we invite members of the public to participate, and we also provide a platform for young talent. In the past, we have had jugglers, a unicyclist, and music of all sorts, including Portuguese fado, Carnatic music on electric guitar, and a djembe. We have also had for three consecutive years the Pereira family trio from Utorda. This year promises to be just as exciting, with some Bach for solo violin, a young string quartet, a choir, an ukelele, djembe, and a good old-fashioned sing-song of party favourites accompanied by guitar. Something for everyone, and it's for a good cause! Let the good times roll! Do contact me if any of you would like to add your bit to our event. My number is 9011051950. 2. The next day (15 June 2013, 6 pm, Caritas Conference Hall St. Inezhttp://www.caritasgoa.org/supporting_projects.html), I'm deeply touched to have the participation and support of my own teacher and the doyenne of violin pedagogy in Goa, the indefatigable Myra Shroff and her Fun Group. There will also be a performance by the new Camerata Child's Play conducted by Pheroze Mistri in a programme that includes the much-loved Concerto for two violins in D minor BWV 1043 (Ashley Rego and Maria Sancha Pereira, soloists), Sibelius' Andante Festivo, John Williams' theme from Schindler's List (Ashley Rego, violin) and Herp Albertis 'Tijuana Taxi' (trumpet solo and arrangement for string ensemble by Selvyn Braganza). Some of our Child's Play kids will feature too, at both places, with a little support from the rest of us. We look forward very much to seeing you at both events. Thank you in advance for your support! Please do spread the word and forward this email to your friends and contacts. I am thrilled to report that a Canadian musician friend will also be busking on our behalf in his country! I also want to take this opportunity to inform you about the upcoming visit of several members of the music faculty of the University of Seville, Spain (http://www.us.es/eng) and their colleagues to Goa in July-August to work with our Child's Play children and the wider music community in Goa. There will be nine musicians in total, professionals in violin, viola, cello, double-bass, recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, voice, choir and children's music introduction and education. Some of you will already have met Santiago Lusardi Girelli, an Italian-origin musician raised in Argentina, and now living in Spain, but with a wide range of interests, and with vast experience in music education across Latin America, especially in El Sistema Venezuela, which is our constant inspiratiion. He was in Goa for some weeks in April, and had conducted the debut concert of Camerata Child's Play. During their visit, the musicians from Spain will engage in lessons and music instruction for our children in Panjim, St. Inez, Caranzalem, and Aldona. They will also offer masterclasses (one-on-one and group) to musicians and music students in Goa. Equally importantly, they would like to work with music teachers across the state. The details will be clearer in the weeks leading up to the arrival of the Spanish delegation. But the general idea is to raise the standard of music education and performance in Goa. There will be several concerts involving the Spanish and our local musicians, especially of those who participate in the music lessons and masterclasses. It is hoped that a lot can be achieved in these weeks (beginning July to mid-August). It would help to know the level of interest in participating in this landmark initiative. Any queries could be addressed to this email address, and on the phone 9011051950. As you can imagine,

[Goanet] THE VICTORIA CROSS: A LOVE STORY - SAT 2ND FEB 6 p.m.
LITERATI INVITES YOU TO A READING BY THE AUTHOR ASHALI VARMA FROM THE VICTORIA CROSS: A LOVE STORY ON SATURDAY 2ND FEBRUARY AT 6 PM ldquo; Her book, a memoir, is not just the story of two young people in love in an extraordinary time. It is about courage, bravery and honourmdash;attributes that were more than just clichés thenmdash;and, of course, about love, the true kind, a word that has been diluted in the candyfloss world of Bollywood. It is also about chronicling an era in the Indian Army. And who better to have as the hero than the dashing Prem Bhagat, the first Indian to be awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry. The story of how he survived 96 hours without sleep, clearing mine after minemdash;15 minefields in allmdash;was something that he never spoke about. The book is also about courage of a different kind. Of her mother Mohini's fight against cancer. The word lsquo;biopsy' was never mentioned in her presence and Mohini fought the disease with fortitude. It is also about family; not necessarily the kind that binds you by blood. For the Bhagats, their family was the fauj. The book describes her mother's relationship with her father's regiment. ldquo;Young officers would arrange her trips to hospital, lending us a driver when ours left. The vice-chief of the Army, Gen. Pattabhiraman, and his wife, Lakshmi, came to visit us to tell us that they would help us through this, and they did. Why were they all doing this? I asked. After all, there are some who already create this with language, devanagri vs roman script. Seems you are not happy to be a Goan, but would prefer to be a proud Sastikar. S You should be proud that Portuguese gave Salcette to the Jesuits. And as far as I know, Jesuits have never been interested in positions, but they have been all out to do missionary work, even to the most remotest place. If salcette had less bishops, than they took lessons from the Jesuits on being better missionaries, and most of the vicars I have met who made sermons more interesting are from Salcette. Cheers Jerry Subject: [Goanet] Only 11 Bishops from Salcete since 1637 ? We Need an Investigation To: goanet@goanet.org Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed; charset=iso-8859-1; reply-type=original Dear Fr. Joaquim Loyola Pereira, Thanks for providing me with the following statistical information: Of the 55 bishops that Goa has mothered (or grand-mothered) right from 1637, 34 are from Bardez, 11 from Salcete and 10 from Ilhas. I am not at all surprised with this information. Infact I expected this kind of discrepancy even though two of our Sashtikars really hit it big despite all the odds stacked against them: Cardinal Valerian Gracias from Navelim who was from the lower castes and became India's first Cardinal and Jesuit Ivan Dias of Velsao who narrowly lost the last papal horse race to Pope Benedict. Basically at its very Genesis, The Portuguese divided the various regions of Goa among the following denominations (priestly orders) of the Catholic Church as follows: Salcette was given to the Jesuits, Ilhas was given to the Dominicans (remember there were a couple of Dominican fathers on board the lead Caravela with Alfonso de Albuquerque in 1510) and Bardez was given to the Franciscans. I know how much tough time the Jesuits have to become Popes and Bishops because of the basic infrastructure of the Church Hierarchy (The Jesuit Black Pope in Rome, the nature of the Jesuits and their missions, etc) and this may be the reason for having only 11 bishops since 1637 from Salcete vs a disproportionate 55 from Bardez, despite Salcete being a hotbed of Catholicism in Goa. Other Root Causes for this discrepancy must be investigated and addressed for a semblance of parity between Bardezkars and Shastikars among the princes of the Church. So what is being done to promote vocations in Salcete and get more Sashtikars to become Bishops and Cardinals in the Catholic Church ? I dont mean to be parochial, but for the greater good of Catholicism in Goa and India, we need more Sashtikars to become Bishops and Cardinals in Goa ! All the prophets sent prior to coming of Jesus, came only for the Jews, Jesus too came to the Jews hence called King of the Jews. It was only thru Jesus, that the Gentiles came to know God. And thru Paul the person as Saul who prosecuted the than followers of Jesus, himself became a staunch Christian, and went on teaching about Jesus to all places he went making disciples all around. During those days there were no bibles, and hence people believed what was taught to them and accepted the faith, and so till that time when rebellion started creeping amongst some for their own benefits. As far as I know, the protestant faith came only because one king protested cause he was not allowed to get married the second time, and the people who were under the king followed the king. Then there are many other sects of Christianity, like Lutherans, thru Martin Luther of Germany who too had rebelled, Methodists, etc etc, how they came about is unknown to me, Coming to Goa amchea ganv gara, it the Portuguese who brought the Christianity and too, Catholicism, Since than, people have believed the pulpit, as there was no way of checking what is taught is right or wrong as there were no Bibles than. And people respected and followed the teachings. People of then used to respect the priests, and I have myself witnessed this when Holy communion was given as the last sacrament, the priest would go with sacristian, with an umbrella covering the blessed sacrament, and people kneeling when they passed. (which is a rarity now). But what the church said was the truth for the people and it still is. Just this year the bible in konkani version has been released, earlier to that, it was only the New Testament, and hence the Ten commandments that you talk of or about Genisis, and Exodus, is what people learnt thru the preaching's of the priest, and followed them without questions, who you now say as to say your exact words men might say anything, the listener should use his common sense and find out who is doing the talking... well Albert how can one find out when there was no bible in the language people could read? And what about those who are illiterate? Our fore fathers only learnt what was taught to them, and obeyed it, until now. As for Genisis and Exodus, The Ten Commandments were taught in the catechism class. I wonder how many even knew of the existence of Bible than. And how many even had the opportunity to hold it in their hands. What do you think about all the practices that people practiced all these 450 years plus, were they right or wrong? Someone had written that Indian Christians do Idol worship because of their ancient Hindu culture, but what about other countries, like Mexico, Most European countries and also latin American countrie, and south American countries? I don't think they were Hindus before they were converted? I have heard that there are some Christian denominations, pay money for the people to join their groups. Mind you its not conversion, but just switching camp. I am not sure how correct it is. Can you shed some light on it? I liked what you said about prayer in your previous mail, but than what is wrong to say prayers written by others? In this modern generation, with so many books published about self help, imagine, even cooking books, one follows some one else's advices, if not fully but at least partly. Every day new books are published on self help. Imagine books on HOW TO COMMUNICATE, MEN ARE FROM MARS AND WOMAN FROM VENUS, HOW TO TALK TO ANYONE, do you think that is necessary? But still its done. D'souza's served excellent pastries, breakfasts, tea and coffee and was located just outside the church. It was quite the habit for the husband to reach the family to the church entrance and then make a beeline to C.Ds. The phrase 'outstanding Catholics' that was so much a Bombay favorite, was first coined by a parish priest there. This gentleman however was a pragmatist if nothing else. He had with permission of C. D'Souzas, installed loudpeaker extensions right across the road just outside the restaurant so that God's word in the form of the Sunday sermon was not missed by those recalcitrant Catholic gentlemen. Venice Restaurant was run by an Aldoncar and his wife who have long since passed on. As a Xavierite student both school and college, I used to eat there whenever I could, to get both the Goan cuisine and the ambience. The menu was nothing fancy, just salt-of-the-earth Goan dishes like rice with prawn or fish curry, 'crumb' chops, sorpotel, vindaloo and xacuti. On a taste level, competing with the best in the Margao, Panjim or Mapuca bazaars. Invariably sitting near me would be the ubiquitous Tarvotti (seaman) enjoying the meal and regaling his local sidekick with stories of his misadventures. He was probably there either because his wife had put him in the doghouse loop (no sex, no food) or perhaps because he liked Venice's food better. --- This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. [Goanet] St. Xaviers Shuts Carnac Road Chapel.
Hello Eric, Indeed it’s very sad news given by Eric, about the Carnac Road Chapel. It was the most frequented chapel for me during my three years residence in Mumbai, just next to Metro Cinema. As it was a walking distance, I can say equal walking distance also to Our Lady of Dollars, but preferred to this chapel, I will certainly miss it on my trips to mumbai. Thanks for bringing this information. Atleast I wont be shocked when I land in Mumbai. Cheers Jerry Fernandes Wed, 09 Aug 2006 01:06:50 -0400 From: eric pinto [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Goanet] St. Xaviers Shuts Carnac Road Chapel. It was not a Parish, but the School's chapel filled in for generations of Marine Line - Crawford folk, specially the 8 am Choir Mass. I have learnt that the Jesuit fathers have shut it's doors, a response to falling attendance: most Crawford Market catholics have now moved on. It had been magnificently renovated in the early 60's: at the helm of inspiration/design/architecture was Basque native, Rev. Molinet - he had taught us french. It would never have happened, however, without the Barcelona duo, Bro. Munoz and Bro. Hernandez, master craftsmen who never appeared to put their chisells down. I really meant to remember the Choir, doing this today. My eyes well at the memory of the guys swinging out ' we pray to God and for his mercy, --- - to thee we bring our joys and sorrow ', Ignatius Day's 'Noble Night', and always, the National Jana Gana Mana ! Thank you so much, the late Conductors Paul Frank, Victor Coelho, solists Trevor Taylor/Stanley Pinto, not to omit the Director, the Rev. Bonet.eric. --- This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. [Goanet] WE ARE FREE TO CHOOSE OUR BANKERS
Banking has come of age in India and most of the private banks have put shop in Goa. We are free to choose our banks. If one does not like the service of a particular bank you can open in another good bank. I have accounts in nationalised as well as private banks. With competition on the rise, their services are far more better than what it was 10 years back. so not to worry to take advantage of modern banking facilities and one will find banking a lot more easier and convienent. 17000 crore of Goan money in banks, than they should treat us like kings !!! after all CUSTOMER IS STILL THE KING kind regards R.
