[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE: 37TH NATIONAL GAMES | Supported by the family which adopted her, Sikkim boxer Pemlaki eyes first-ever National Games medal |

2023-11-03 Thread Hritam Bose
[image: image.png]

*Supported by the family which adopted her, Sikkim boxer Pemlaki eyes
first-ever National Games medal*

*Panaji, Nov 3:* The 37th National Games in Goa offers a great platform for
rising boxers to showcase their potential and present their case for
inclusion in the big league. One among those aspiring pugilists is Sikkim’s
Pemlaki Bhutia, who will be eyeing her maiden medal at the showpiece meet.

Separated from her biological family at the age of five, Pemlaki was
fascinated with boxing from the day she saw MC Mary Kom picking the bronze
medal at the London Olympics in 2012.

However, for the next two years, she could not pursue the sport thanks to
the absence of any training facilities for the sport in her surroundings at
Namchi in South Sikkim — her new address after being adopted by Tilok Kumar
Pondyal, an ASP with the state police force.

“I was five or six, when I was adopted by my new parents, and they are very
much supportive of my choices. We are five siblings, two brothers, and
three sisters, and we share a strong bond. There hasn’t been any instance
in my life till now when they have not supported me. My parents would
ensure all the happiness for me like they do with the other siblings,” she
said.

Pemlaki lost her biological mother as an infant and was initially raised by
her father. She was later adopted by a nearby family whom she would meet
every morning during her trips to fetch milk.

“I was too small and don’t remember everything vividly. But from what I can
recollect, I would go for morning trips to fetch milk, and on the way would
cross home, and the family loved me, they would take care of me. I used to
spend most of my time at their place, and one day my new father asked me if
would want to stay with them forever, and from that day I got a new
family,” Pemlaki, now 22, explained while refreshing her memories.

While the rest of her siblings were good at studies, Pemlaki was more
inclined towards sport, and Mary Kom’s medal — India’s first-ever Olympic
medal in women’s boxing, did give her the push to dream of a career in
boxing.

She was however, clueless about the coaching facilities in her locality
before an opportunity came knocking when her school teacher wanted a few
students to participate in the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan, a
central-sponsored scheme launched by the then-central government in
February 2014.

“I was 13 then, and when my teacher wanted some students, I immediately
raised my hand for boxing. There were some other disciplines like archery
and shooting, but none of the other students were interested in boxing. So,
I was selected and I bagged a silver medal in the 32kg category, the
highest for children of that age. And that was the start!”

“After winning the medal, I was selected to train at the Sports Authority
of India centre, and within a couple of months, I got my second medal, this
time a gold. That really pumped me up and made my family believe that I
could go the distance in the sport,” she said.

A silver at the inaugural North East Olympic Games (NEOG) in Imphal (2018)
opened the doors of the national youth camp in 2019 before the pandemic
struck and online coaching became the new normal for athletes across the
globe.

In 2022, Pemlaki bounced back with a gold medal and ‘best boxer’ award at
the State boxing championship held in Soreng, West Sikkim.

Aspiring to represent India at the senior level, Pemlaka now hopes to make
her mark in the 57kg category in Goa.

[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE (132ND DURAND CUP) - 132ND INDIAN OIL DURAND CUP THEME SONG PRESS RELEASE

2023-08-09 Thread Ruhul Ameen Khan
Hi,

Hindi release attached below.

*132ND INDIAN OIL DURAND CUP THEME SONG PRESS RELEASE*

*Kolkata, August 09th, 2023*: The video of the theme song for the 132nd
Durand Cup was unveiled at the opening ceremony of the 24-team cup
tournament on August 03, 2023 and it is set to conjure a completely new set
of emotions among fans of the game. The song titled “*Bhide*” in Hindi, has
been written by celebrated lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya and sung by famous
playback and nation’s melody prince Arijit Singh as well as Vivian
Fernandez-popularly known as Rapper Divine. Arijit has also composed the
music for the song. The fast-paced song captures the nationwide enthusiasm
and passion for the game .

Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal, who won the National Award for his portrayal
of the role of Major Vihaan Singh Shergill in the film “Uri: The Surgical
Strike,” also features prominently in the “*Bhide*” video, extending his
fabled association with the Indian Army. The passionate actor also plays
the role of the legendary Sam Manekshaw in his upcoming film “Sam Bahadur”,
in whose preparation he underwent training to match the body language and
gait of the Field Marshal.

“My association with the Indian Army has always felt special. This year, I
am honoured to be involved with the iconic Durand Cup which is organised
by the Indian Army on behalf of the three Services. I wish the organisers
of the Durand Cup and all participating teams all the very best. Jai
Hind!,” said the actor ahead of the video release during the opening
ceremony of the 24-team cup tournament.

The Durand Organizing Committee approached Vicky Kaushal and upon coming to
know of the idea, the nation’s “favourite actor in Uniform”, was more than
willing to demonstrate his zeal for the forces and football through the
video.

Arijit Singh also revealed his excitement ahead of the “Bhide” video
release saying, “It’s something very different that I have done but
certainly the most satisfying. The experience of working with the Army is
that of a lifetime and to do something for the sport and the tournament
that we have all been in awe of growing up, has been surreal. I wish
everyone associated with the 132nd Durand Cup all the very best.”

Hailing from Murshidabad’s Jiaganj, the 132nd Durand Cup became even more
special for Arijit Singh, as the 22 ceremony kids at the opening ceremony
were from his dream project Aditi Institute of Sports, under his Tatwamasi
Foundation fold. The institute is working towards developing and delivering
talent to Bengal and Indian football and the kids had a little glimpse of
their dreams during their visit to Kolkata.

The *“Bhide”* video has been produced by Shouvik Basu and Badsha Talukdar
and directed by Himanshu Mishro Mondal.

Also sharing his thoughts on the occasion an Army spokesperson said,
““Bhide"- the theme song for the 132nd edition of the Durand Cup 2023,
encapsulates all the elements that the Indian Army is proud of. High on
energy, the song shows how despite all challenges faced in Service life,
Army personnel have their hearts in the right place and always find time
and space for sports and fitness. We thank Arijit Singh and Vicky Kaushal
and all the talented individuals for coming together for this wonderful
occasion and wishes the song and music video, loads of success.”

*About Durand Cup*

A symbol of India’s football history and culture, the Durand Cup is Asia’s
oldest and the world’s third oldest football tournament, held mostly
between top Indian football clubs across divisions. Organized by the Indian
Armed Forces, the Durand Cup has been the breeding ground for India’s best
footballing talent, over the years.

The inaugural edition happened in Shimla in 1888, when it started off as an
Army Cup, open only to the British Indian Army troops in India, but soon
opened up to civilian teams. Named after its founder, Sir Mortimer Durand,
Foreign Secretary of British India from 1884 to 1894, the iconic tournament
reached its 132nd Edition in 2023. Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal
have been the most successful teams, winning the tournament 16 times each.

to receive international tourist arrivals expected to reach 30.5 million by
2028, with a diverse portfolio of niche tourism products likes cruises,
adventure, wellness, sports, eco-tourism to offer global travellers.

As per IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation) the Indian tourism and
hospitality industry has emerged as one of the key drivers of growth among
the services sector in India. Tourism in India has significant potential
considering the rich cultural and historical heritage, proving to be a
potentially large employment generator, besides being a significant source
of foreign exchange for the country, research states.

While India’s rising middle class with increasing disposable incomes has
continued to support the growth of domestic and outbound tourism, the
travel and tourism sector in India alone has accounted for 8% of the total
employment opportunities generated in the country in 2017, providing
employment to around 41.6 million people during the same year. This number
is expected to rise by 2% per annum to 52.3 million jobs by 2028, as more
international hotel chains increase their presence in India. IBEF data
estimates this to account for around 47% share in the Tourism and
Hospitality sector of India by 2020, and 50% by 2022.

Poised against this promising reality, the *16th International edition of
India Hospitality Expo in Goa from August 1-3 *to be held at the* Dr Shyama

showcase local talent, while celebrating achievers from the *Travel,
Hospitality, Food, Service and F & B sectors at the Award Nights *scheduled
to be hosted across* August 1-3. *

*So why host IHE 2019 in Goa? *

Research states that Goa’s food market potential is pegged at Rs 10,000
crores, and tourism related food market estimated at Rs 5,000 crores with a
5-10% growth rate projection. With great connectivity by air, rail, sea and
road favouring Goa as an ideal food and drink importer, the State’s Tourism
Master Plan estimates an additional bed requirement of 2914 in the Star
category, and 4186 in the non-star category in the near future.

*Industry expert and Chairman of Trinity Group, organisers of the 16th
International edition of India Hospitality Expo 2019, Mr Joseph Dias*

Plea for retaining top status for Churchill Bros in I-League,
CM backs up PM's intervention

"Football is a sport that singularly connects every Goan and invokes a
sense of passion. Goa has given illustrious football legends to the
Indian sports arena. I request the Prime Minister to consider examining
the matter put forward by Churchill Bros FC, which is one of the premier
clubs in the State of Goa."

--Goa's Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant

JULY 15, PANJIM: Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant sought Prime Minister
Narendra Modi's mediation in examining the plea of Churchill Brothers
Football Club to retain the club's position in the top league of the
country, specially considering the interest of young football players
and also providing protection to the traditional clubs with a highly
valued history in Indian football.

The Chief Minister's prompt action was a follow-up of the meeting with
Mr Churchill Alemao, president and Ms Valanka Alemao, CEO of Churchill
Bros FC.

Fully supporting the Churchill Bros' plea, the Chief Minister perused
the letter addressed to the Prime MInister, wherein Churchill Bros FC
alongwith many other I-League clubs had sought the PM's intervention to
save Indian football, especially that of the Goan club which has been
the torch-bearer of Goa and Indian football for the past four decades.

Grasping the matter quickly, and eager to protect the interest of
football and Goan football players, Dr Pramod stated: "Football is a
sport that singularly connects every Goan and invokes a sense of
passion. Goa has given illustrious football legends to the Indian sports
arena. I request the Prime Minister to consider examining the matter put
forward by Churchill Bros FC, which is one of the premier clubs in the
State of Goa," stated the Chief Minister.

Driving home that football runs in the blood of Goans, Dr Pramod
concluded by saying that the "PM's intervention in the matter would
ensure that the lawful rights of the players and patrons of the sport in
the State are safeguarded."

In its submission, Churchill Bros FC's CEO, Valanka Alemao, stated that
the club were the champions in the I-League twice and the Federation Cup
and runners-up of I-League thrice. The 42-year old club had earned the
distinction of representing India in the AFC Cup championship due to its
superlative performance and presently is the only Goan club in the
I-League after the withdrawal of other acclaimed Goan teams - Dempo,
Salgaocar and Sporting.

"We have been providing a pan-India platform for talented players from
Goa, other parts of India and even from abroad to showcase their talent
with specially the Goan football players gaining the much needed
experience and exposure which catapults them for higher and bigger
events at national and international levels. As of now we are the
torch-bearers of Goan football in the National League and as such we
must continue enjoying the pride of place especially for the sake of
Goan players. The I-League has been the top division league in the
country and the status need to be maintained at all costs," reasoned out
Valanka.

"The ISL is a commercial championship without a strategy for promotion
and relegation. It is more like the IPL in cricket, a closed-league,
there being no culture of Indian football. There is no legacy. The AIFF
is dependent on the finances to sustain itself and as such it entered
into a Masters Right Agreement (MRA) in 2010 with IMG-R which affects
the rights of the I-League clubs as it has been contemplated in the
agreement that the ISL would be made the seniormost league in preference
to I-League which would eventually be displaced to the ordinary or no
status at all," explained Valanka.

"The IMG-R is a private business entity which has launched
francise-based clubs, which are not part of the rich history of Indian
football. The top-tier league in the country was launched in 1996,
christened as National Football League (NFL) and in 2007 re-branded as
I-league as India's first ever professional league and as such enjoyed
the status of India's top-tier league. It was only in October 2013 that
ISL came into existence, with many alleging that it became a necessity
due to financial constraints," added Valanka.

"The road map for Indian football is what the traditional clubs have
been asking for. It is because of this exact reason - the lack of
clarity on the road map for Indian football - that Dempo, Salgaocar and
Sporting withdrew from the league. And now the onus has fallen on
Churchill Bros to safeguard the interests of Goan football players, as

*Italian graphic designer chosen by Wendell Rodricks as winner of KASHISH
2019 Poster Design Contest*

*Winning design will become look of 10th Anniversary edition of South
Asia's biggest LGBTQ film festival in Mumbai from June 12-16, 2019. *

For immediate release:
April 12, 2019

Milan-based graphic designer Domenico De Monte is the winner of the KASHISH
International Poster Design Contest. The winner was picked from Indian and
international design submissions by one of India's top fashion designers
Wendell Rodricks. The winning design will become the look of the 10th
edition of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival - South Asia's
biggest LGBTQ film festival. The festival will be held between June 12-June
16, 2019 at two of city's iconic theaters - Liberty Carnival Cinemas and
Metro INOX. De Monte, the first international designer to win in the
history of the poster contest, will receive a cash prize of Rs 25,000
instituted by Rodricks.

"In an age of over design, it is heartening to see a design that celebrates
a 10 year milestone with a graphic that hits all the right notes for the
somewhere 'Over the Rainbow' theme for KASHISH 2019. Using the rainbow to
fill up the poster and also in the detail: the rainbow extends to the words
as well. That detail is brilliant. I wish the winner and the organizers of
the festival congratulations and wishes for well deserved success," said
Wendell Rodricks.

Festival Director Sridhar Rangayan said, "We are so happy with the reading
down of the law Sec 377, for our festival's 10th edition we would literally
paint the city with rainbow colours! The design with overlapping rainbow
strokes literally represents this joyous mood of the festival, and we are
so happy that Wendell Rodricks picked this amazing design. We promise that
we will make KASHISH 2019 a momentous celebration for the LGBTQ community
and allies".

This year the poster contest received over 50 submissions from around the
world. The cinema posters of the 1970s was an inspiration while making the
winning design, said De Monte, a graphic designer from Milan, Italy. "The
theme 'Over the Rainbow” together with the fact that it was the 10th
edition of the festival gave me the idea to work on the rainbow shape to
create a texture. The number 10 springs using the colors of LGBT culture
without being banal. The sharp areas and flat colours reflect my intention
to keep the artwork simple and sincere, as the message of the festival that
aims to fight for a fairer society that gives everyone the right and the
freedom to affirm their gender identity. I decided to frame the
illustration with the typical style of cinema posters from the 70s," said
De Monte.

The winning design will be used on billboards (hoardings), banners, cinema
slides, delegate cards, T-shirts and catalog cover.

*KASHISH 2019 Theme*

KASHISH 2019 festival theme ‘Over The Rainbow’ not only commemorates the
reading down of Sec 377 and decriminalization of same-sex relationships in
India, but also defines the challenges in store for the LGBTQ community’s
journey towards empowerment and social acceptance. Bringing together films
from all over the world as well as panel discussions and performances, the
festival will showcase the shared struggles and victories, and offer a
window to existing and future possibilities. Let’s together journey over
the rainbow to discover the land of equality & dignity.

*About KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival*

CHICALIM: On Sunday, the budding footballing talent of Vasco, Chicalim
and neighbouring villages tackled something new on the pitch during the
Salgaocar FC’s Community Outreach Program, held at the Chicalim Village
Panchayat ground.
The event 'Nutrition on Pitch' was devised by Sangeeta Jain (Nutrition
Consultant at V.M. Salgaocar Hospital) with the help of 8 Nutritionists
to help the youngsters understand they cannot perform at their peak
condition unless their bodies are fueled by the nutrients, vitamins and
minerals that come with a balanced diet.
It was a complete afternoon of fun, games and knowledge which had
interactive activities like "Nutri-Quiz", "Nutri-Crossword" and games
like "Nutrition in a bag".
The children also showcased their thoughts about what nutrition meant
to them through a Poster Competition. Parents were enlightened about
the nutritional needs of young football aspirants and their diet to aid
better performance.
A food display table was designed to show examples of healthy snacks and
beverages that should form part of the child's diet. The importance of
hydrating with water, juices and infused drinks compared to trendy
sports drinks and different types of foods best for Pre, During & Post
training nutrition were highlighted during the information session.
"A player’s daily calories need to come from healthy carbohydrate
sources that provide energy to avoid fatigue. Protein helps build and
repair muscles, and most kids get plenty of it through a balanced diet,
while over-consumption should be avoided. Parents have to focus on their
child’s overall diet to ensure that it is balanced in all macro and
micro nutrients for healthy growth and performance for which local,
natural and traditional foods are the best option,” expressed Sangeeta
Jain.
Speaking during the occasion Salgaocar FC Vice President Swati Salgaocar
said, “At Salgaocar FC we are constantly thinking of the holistic
development of our players both on and off the field. Nutrition is one
such area where we felt there is a lot of information available, but
expert inputs are required to guide parents and children so they can

PRESS NOTE

PANJIM: On examining the Statutes of Goa Football Association (GFA), as
published in the printed booklet, and on obtaining information upon
application under RTI to the Registrar of Societies with whom GFA is a
registered body, the Executive Committee was shocked to learn that no
amendments were registered with the Registrar of Societies.
''Consequently, the amendments carried out and printed in the booklet
would not have any legal sanctity nor be enforceable," stated GFA
President, Mr Churchill Alemao in a Press Note issued here tonight.
It was found out that no amendments right from 20-7-1977 were filed with
the Registrar of Societies and as such not incorporated in the GFA
Constitution. As such, the members decided to take corrective measures
as these amendments are not legally valid. "Certainly, there is need to
bring about amendments to the Constitution and we will do it at
appropriate time, after giving proper notices, as it has been found out
that amendments were carried out in hurry. We will work out to to bring
about proper amendments taking into consideration the directions and
guidance of the AIFF," Mr Churchill Alemao, GFA president stated.
"From the legal point of view, it is imperative to take corrective
measures given the situation, as the District Registrar has certified
that no amendments have been carried out since 1977, when the
constitution/bye-laws, rules and memorundum of the association were
registered, and no amendments carried out in the registered
Constitution, and even as the booklet made reference to the amendments
of 22-10-2016 and 24-02-2018," pointed out Mr Alemao. Consequently, the
Executive Committee has resolved to call an Extraordinary General Body
Meeting on February 3 in Panjim at 10.30 a.m.

PRESS RELEASE
Khelo India looking at recognising Sesa Football Academy as a partner:
Sports Minister

Goa, November 20, 2018: Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Hon’ble
Minister of State (Independent Charge) Youth Affairs and Sports, was the
special guest at an event organised by SESA Football Academy at their
Sankhali Campus in Goa today.

Speaker of Legislative Assembly Goa, Mr. Pramod Sawant and the President
of Vedanta Football Project, Mr. Annanya Agarwal were present during his
visit to the Academy.

Speaking at the event, the Hon'ble Minister emphasised on the need for
stronger alignment with private academies in India and said Khelo India
is looking at officially recognising SESA Football Academy as a partner
for the programme.

Col. Rathore on his maiden visit to the SESA Football academy at the
Sankhali campus said, “We have started a programme called Khelo India
that is the vision of the Prime Minister, where he feels that anyone who
plays has a distinct personality. Sports is also a place where you
forget about your caste, creed and religion and where you become one
team.”

“Hopefully we will very soon be recognising Sesa Football Academy as a
partner in Khelo India. My team will come here and see the
infrastructure and the training that is happening,” he added.

Annanya Agarwal, President of the Vedanta Football Project also spoke on
the occasion: “It will be an honour to support Government initiatives
like Khelo India and we will be extending all possible support to our
young athletes. At Vedanta, we want to take Indian football forward and
remain committed to the upliftment of football from the grassroots
levels.”

SESA Football Academy is one of the first residential academies in
India. Established in 1999, with currently two running campuses, the
academy has the unique distinction of developing the highest number of
players for the national team, the ISL teams, the I-League teams and the
Goa Pro League from the state of Goa.

The minister met with the players of the academy and also addressed the
gathering. He talked about the academy and its work on improving
football at the grassroots level. He also honoured Bosco Monteiro,
Nicholas Pereira, Salvador Fernandes and Issac D’Souza – former players
of the SESA Goa Football Club.

The minister was full of praise for the impressive effort put forth by
the Vedanta Group to build the SESA Football Academy. “I must
congratulate the Vedanta staff and the entire team for allowing me the
privilege of coming here and meeting all the wonderful teams here that
are preparing for the various tournaments ahead,” he said.

SESA Football Academy has 2 fully equipped and state of the art campuses
– one at Sankhali and another at Sirsaim – that employs highly capable
and licensed technical experts.

The SESA Football Academy in Sankhali was created on a reclaimed mine
and is a great example of sustainability and responsibility towards the
environment by Vedanta Group. Keeping this great endeavour in mind, the
minister explained “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for me to be
here, in this place which would normally be a mine bereft of any green
leaves. But it’s amazing to see the sort of work that Vedanta has done
to convert the mines into the lovely forest that is here.”

“This is a great example to the rest of the country and it’s also an
example that mining can co-exist with environmental protection,” he
added.

Speaking on the efforts of the Vedanta Group to support women’s
football, Col. Rathore said, “It’s also wonderful to see that a Vedanta
Women’s Football League has been started here. I would love to see these
girls play for India and I would love India to dominate the world with
our girls,” the minister told the gathering.

PRESS RELEASE:

Serendipity Arts Festival 2018 to Kick - off a 6-day Football Film
screening programme from 22 - 27 November 2018

An official collateral event of International Film Festival of India

November 2018: India’s first multidisciplinary arts event, the
Serendipity Arts Festival 2018 presents Football – A beautiful life, a
6-day film programme from 22 - 27 November 2018 at Children’s Park, Goa.
This is an official collateral event of the 49th International Film
Festival of India (IFFI).

Curated by Jan Tilman Schwab, Football – A beautiful life will showcase
a range of exceptional features films and documentaries from around the
world in which human and social stories are told through football.
Attendance at all sessions is free until full capacity is reached and
after each film, there will be a short discussion about the film.
Proving football truly is the world’s game, the festival will feature
films in more than 6 different languages, representing a diverse range
of football stories from Spain, Lebanon, Brazil, Germany, Iceland and
India.

The film programme will celebrate Football, a game deeply embedded in
the history and culture of Goa, which resonates with Goans better than
any other sport. The films demonstrate the unifying power of football
that brings individuals together and creates a sense of community. The
screenings cherish the beautiful game and enhance the love for this
beautiful life. Spotlighting Goa’s most loved sport through film, the
project extends the Festival’s interdisciplinary approach and inclusive
community programming that is continually sensitive to the cultural
nuances of its host city.

Jan Tilman Schwab said, “‘Football – A Beautiful Life’ is a gift from
the Serendipity Arts Festival to the people of Panjim. I am honoured to
be the lucky person invited to curate this unique and free public
programme. Football and Film have a lot in common: both are team
efforts, both depend basically on motion, both are non-verbal languages
that can be understood everywhere in the world. I wanted to present
films that have a high educational potential, that viewers can learn
something from, whether this be from the film’s content and story, or
its form and structure. The films chosen represent almost all
continents, and include short and feature films, documentaries, fiction,
and comedies that each tell stories of triumph and setbacks. The
audience will get opportunities to laugh and weep.”

The Football Film screening programme is part of a series of
multidisciplinary arts activations that will energise Goa in the lead up
to Serendipity Arts Festival 2018. Initiatives like these are an
integral part of the Foundation’s mission of making the arts accessible
and developing arts audiences both in numbers and in diversity.

In its previous two editions, the Serendipity Arts Festival attracted
more than 400,000 visitors creating significant public impact and
contributing to the cultural regeneration of Panaji. This year’s
programming continues to honour the culture and the arts of the
Festival’s host city, with special events to celebrate the 175th
anniversary of Panaji, redefining heritage sites and architectural icons
through creative and community-focused projects.

This year the Festival will take place across 10 venues in Goa and
involve over 1300 artists, transforming Panaji into a vibrant cultural
space with multiple exhibitions, performances and immersive arts
experiences.

Serendipity Arts Festival is the only art event in India which unites
the creative disciplines, committed to creating tangible change across
the country’s cultural spectrum by engaging the public and increasing

Sir,

*SUB: PRESS RELEASE FOR KIND FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION*

*The Goa Su-Raj Party – GSRP, in its post 2017 Assembly Elections decision,
has resolved that the Party shall not contest future State Assembly
Elections, if the Party’s grass-roots organizations in the respective
constituencies, i.e. CWCs [Constituency Working Committees] are not in
place, where the President of the CWC is the Candidate and the Secretary is
the Substitute candidate, said Senior Party Leader and spokesperson, Mr.
Floriano Lobo.*

*Q: Why such a decision comes after the Party’s 18 years of existence in
the State Politics?*

*A: In Goa, politics is all about money and GSRP was put together to defeat
the display of MONEY POWER in politics, or to allow politicians to become
crorepatis overnight, so to speak, because the end result is negative
irrespective of who gets elected or which party comes to power, with the
Goan people going to square one with U-Turns and Super-U-Turns galore on
pre-election promises.*

*Q: Can you explain as to how GSRP intends to fight elections without
MONEY?*

*A: ‘Money’ is necessary to even move a match-stick in every day life,
especially so in politics. But huge sums of money is certainly not required
to move the voters to line-up to vote for their own better future. When
huge amounts of money comes into play, the Party’s ideology gets diluted or
even wiped out through the strings attached to that money. GSRP’s has a
slogan “SMALL MONEY FROM A LOT OF PEOPLE MAKES BETTER SENSE THAN LARGE SUMS
OF MONEY FROM A FEW” which explains it all, meaning, nothing comes for
free but at a cost. Through this slogan, GSRP is telling the people of Goa
who desire a lasting change for the better that without them investing in
their own future but wanting that someone else should invest for them,
fetches them dictatorial governments which take U-Turns with impunity the
very next day the election results are declared.*

*Q: With the above decision you mean to say that if CWCs are not in place,
the party shall stay out of elections?”*

*A: It is suicidal to contest elections without basic grass-roots
organizations. The Party, thus far, was only popularizing itself by
fielding candidates.*

*Q: Your Party’s name ‘SU-RAJ’ has not gone well with the people of Goa.
Will the Party consider changing the Party’s name should a popular demand
is made?*

*A: “ Democracy is the ‘root’ of this Party. If such a sentiment is aired
by the members and/or the well wishers of the Party, the General Body shall
decide one way or the other what is good for the Party. But should a
different name is agreed upon, the acronym ‘GSRP’ must be maintained to
whatever substitutions desired, with ‘G’ standing for ‘GOA’”. The choice of
GOA SU-RAJ was shortlisted with two other probable names among many and
voted upon by 13 founding members out of 16 voting, in the final round.*

*Q: What is your Party’s Stand on Goa’s present ‘MINING’ and ‘PDAs’
 imbroglio?*

*A: With respect to mining in Goa, we thank the Supreme Court as well as
the ‘Goa Foundation’ for the stoppage of the loot and plunder of Goa’s
vital mineral resources since 1961, Mining should NOT be restarted unless
and until a fool-proof - no-nonsense mining policy is put in place with
people’s involvement in its framing. In a letter to Justice Shah of the
Shah Commission, when he visited Goa, the Party had stated that if the
mining in Goa does not benefit Goa and Goans, but on the contrary it
affects their lives, their livelihoods, as well as their safety and well
being, then let the mineral resources lie buried, untouched and
undisturbed, whether the Central or State Governments likes it or not. The
mining scamsters must be brought to book and the loot of more than a lakh
crores rupees recovered. Mining operations must be carried out, if at all,
based on VILLAGE CO-OPERATIVES, and at no time the present leases should
be auctioned to the highest bidders. The alternative to mining is
advancement of Goa’s agriculture through scrapping of the Agriculture
Tenancy Act, 1964, which act has mutilated the vibrant agricultural status
of Goa.*

*With respect to PDAs and ODPs which are blatantly being floated to favour
vested interests, these should be DEEP FROZEN until the Regional Plan 2021
is notified. The Regional Plan must incorporate the

[Goanet] Press release for Urban Sketching Workshop

2017-11-24 Thread Gitanjali Gallery
Feature/Article:

SketchWalk 1.0, an Urban Sketching Workshop, is an initiative of
Gallery Gitanjali,
intended to incite an interest in fledgling art and travel enthusiasts to
take up Visual Journaling as a means of capturing the quaint charm and
cultural uniqueness of heritage locations around Goa and in their travels
in general. This first edition of Sketchwalk will have Artist Alice Masprone
teach participants the essential skills of urban sketching such as free
hand training; perspective study and fast drawing.

Urban Sketching is the art of sketching on the go; the act of drawing while
on location, in places that you travel to or currently live in. It not only
encourages you to explore, but to document the world around you, and
develop an eye for aesthetics. For nomads amongst us who have the incurable
affliction of wanderlust, urban sketching is an invaluable skill of
documenting travels or adding to your writing when words fail to capture
what you wish to express. In addition, you don’t need much to carry out a
sketch. A sketchbook and a pencil are sufficient for the minimalist, and as
confidence builds, one may opt for pens, charcoal, art markers or crayons.

Free hand training is necessary to enable the hand to move smoothly, in
order to become sure and incisive in the drawing gesture using different
tools (pencil, pen, pastel, brush) to help one find one’s individual trait.
Basic perspective study will inculcate the ability to give depth to an
image by exercising different points of view and the rules of perspective,
resulting in three-dimensional drawings.Fast drawing techniques will train
participants how to draw faster, concentrating on synthesizing what we see
in a few glimpses and on becoming able to reproduce it without hesitation.

Alice Masprone has done her Bachelor’s degree on Visual Art and Art History
at the Academy of Fine Art of Turin, Italy and has taught painting and
drawing both in schools (Lorenzo il Magnifico, Italy) and privately for
many years. She will take us through the old world charms of the Latin
Quarter, Fontainhas, where participants will be taught to observe, compose
and sketch out interesting scenes.

Materials required for the workshop include a Sketch book (A5/A4/A3) or
drawing paper and a board, a soft pencil (3B to 6B), a ball pen (any
colour) or any other drawing tool that you are comfortable with.

The workshop will be held on the 9th and 10th of December from 3:30PM to
6PM. Participation is priced at Rs. 1,200. Participants are requested to
call +919209262863 or +919823572035 to register.

Please ensure that this is published by tomorrow, the 23rd of November.

Feature:

Of all the vibrant cultural fashions that India can boast, the humble
unstitched Sari has to be the most overlooked and yet the most versatile
and widely used fabric by the Indian woman.

And yet, it is taken for granted far too often.

Rooted in the balanced mix of culture and modernity, The Indian Draping
Company is a movement to revive the ancient wisdom in the traditional
drapes and infuse them with a modern perspective. Each region has a native
garment that evolves from local sensibilities, as well as the occupation
and culture of the wearer. The garment adapts to suit the local context,
weather, and geography.
Spearheading this traditional renaissance is Niketa Malhotra, a self
professed Sari Enthusiast and draping whisperer of the famous five to nine
yards. Niketa's Sari journey began seven months ago when she attended a
Sari workshop
conducted by reknowned textile and Sari scholar, Ṛta Kapur Chishti.

Niketa's workshops are generally limited to a small group of eight to ten
so as to give the right amount of dedicated attention to each participant.
The two hour workshop is roughly divided into two halves. The first hour
starts with an ice-breaking session followed by an interactive presentation
and discussion of the evolution of the Sari from its glorious past to what
we know today Niketa will keep you informed and entertained with a mix of
pictures, videos, and anecdotes. The second hour is focused on practical
trials of four draping styles, wherein Niketa will show you how to drape
the unstitched saree in imaginative ways, and then have you practice your
unique style so you perfect it. So ladies, bring those drapes out of the
closet and go wild!

[Goanet] Press Release: Match Preview of Vasco SC vs SCC Cavelossim

2017-11-17 Thread VascoSC Official
Dear Colleagues,Please find a match preview of Goa Professional League match
between Vasco SC vs Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim.  Please print/publish this
match preview in your respective newspapers/websites.
Vasco SC take on SCC Cavelossim in GPL encounter
Vasco Sports Club will be looking to continue their form from the last match
victory against Guardian Angel SC when they will take on Santa Cruz Club of
Cavelossim at Duler Football Stadium on Saturday.
On the other hand, Cavelossim who went down to Corps of Signals in the last
match will be looking to for at least a point from the match as they had lost
three out of four matches played. Their only win came against I-League side
Churchill Brother in the last month.
Vasco coach Eban Mesquita has all the players at his disposal except for the
experienced centre defender Micky Fernandes who is most likely to miss the
clash due to a minor injury. However, the gaffer is most likely to go with the
same playing XI which earned his first victory of the season.
“We are expecting a tough fight tomorrow. I am aware that it is not going to be
easy but my boys will give their 100% in the practice sessions and that will
help them tomorrow to snatch all three points from the opponents.” Vasco gaffer
Mesquita said.
Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes has been experimenting with the starting XI
in every match but players like Goalkeeper Siddesh Morje, midfielders Moises
D’Sa, Alwyn Vaz are regular starters for the South Goan club but few changes
can be expected in the starting XI when they will take on the Port Towners.
Though Cavelossim has an advantage in head-to-head as the South Goan club had
won both, home and away clashes in the last season but this season it will be
very tough for Cavelossim to beat the rejuvenated Vasco side especially when
Nigerian forward John Nuanna and Guinean midfielder Vassesa Toure who scored
two goals in the last match, will boost Vasco’s attacking.

Company is a movement to revive the ancient wisdom in the traditional drapes
and infuse them with a modern perspective. Each region has a native garment
that evolves from local sensibilities, as well as the occupation and
culture of the
wearer. The garment adapts to suit the local context, weather, and
geography.

For those who haven't been acquainted with this talented, yet modest length
of cloth, the Sari is an unstitched piece of fabric, typically ranging five
to nine yards
in length, with two ornamental borders running along the length and a
‘pallu’ at
the outer end. Traditionally made using only hand-spun cotton, the Sari is
unmatched in its versatility in design, aesthetic, and science. There are
more
than 100-documented draping styles across India with every state having
multiple, diverse variations of its own.

"The three-hour workshop with Ṛta at the Sari School, New Delhi changed the
way I view the Sari. Today, I perceive the Sari as an unstitched piece of
fabric with
two borders that can be draped into any garment of need. And it is this
changed
outlook, this new freedom to drape the unstitched garment that I wish to
share
with the world", she explains.
Inspired and infected by Ṛta’s love for the Sari, she incorporated the
drapes in her regular wear be it for a formal or informal gathering or
going for a rigorous walk. Niketa's mantra is that there is a drape for
every occasion!

An impromptu workshop conducted for the Online Global Sari Meet gave Niketa
the opportunity and motivation to share her skills with other women. In
September 2017, she worked with 18 wonderful women who learned and
experimented with the different drapes of India. The ancient drapes
suddenly seemed to get a new lease of life when the women draped them in a
contemporary way and walked with confidence on stage. The impact of the
show was profound and positive. The women not only felt more confident
about themselves but also appreciated and incorporated the drapes in their
regular wear.
"That was my moment of inspiration", she says, "and The Indian Draping
Company was formed."

Gallery Gitanjali has always held fast to our mission of being a platform
for an eclectic mix of the Arts- with a special emphasis on local and
traditional art- and over the years we have evolved into a central cultural
space, offering an alternative art studio and a conference/workshop venue.
For this event, we wish to venture off the beaten canvas and into the world
of traditional fabrics and fashion; we shall turn the spotlight onto the
art of the Sari.

Niketa's presentation is an interactive session on the evolution of the
Sari through the centuries. The session will reflect on the science,
design, and patrons of the drapes as well as the handloom Sari. Spread over
an hour, the presentation throws light on the glorious past, highlights the
current relevance, and seeks to imagine the future of the Sari. The style
of the presentation is interactive, as Niketa includes a mix of pictures,
videos, and anecdotes. Time permitting, she may conduct a few live draping
activities, and conclude with an interactive Question & Answer session.

[Goanet] Press Release- Match Report of the AWES CUP2017 match between Vasco SC andd Sporting Clube de Goa

2017-09-04 Thread VascoSC Official
Dear Colleagues,Please find below a match preview of 1st AWES CUP 2017 match
between Vasco SC vs Sporting Clube de Goa.  Please print/publish this match
preview in your respective newspapers/websites.
Vasco Goa down to Sporting Goa in the AWES Cup

Vasco Sports Club suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Sporting Clube de Goa
in the 1st AWES Cup 2017 match played at Duler football Stadium earlier today.
Vasco started without two of key players, Micky Fernandes and Sherwin Lobo due
to injuries. At the other hand Sporting coach named newly signed Peter
Carvalho, Girish Naik and keeper Ozen Silva in the starting XI. While their
start striker Victorino Fernandes was back in the orange jersey after spending
a season with I-League side Mumbai FC.
Sporting started on a positive note and enjoyed better possession over the ball
in the first 10 minutes as the opponents struggled to take control of the ball.
in between these, Sporting’s Mauvin  Borges made a darting run from his own
half and went for the glory from the edge of the box but his powerful strike
was brilliantly saved by the keeper Suresh Lamani. Vasco replied them with a
quick counter when winger Anil Gaonkar dribbled past two in his run from the
half way line and tried his luck from the wing but his shot hit the crossbar
and came back into the play.
Anil’s first move proved to be the trigger to activate Vasco’s offensive play
as next 10 minutes belonged to the Port Towners. However, they could manage to
break Sportings defence in any of their moves.
It was Sporting who broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark.
Victorino tapped in from the close off Ganesh Thakur's parallel pass in the box
with Vasco keeper Suresh out of position. Sporting were back on track as once
again, men in orange tried to take control over the game with better possession
and numerous attacks. In one of these, Sporting should have doubled their lead
when Mauvin was in the action with just Vasco keeper to beat in a one-on-one
situation but the sporting lad shot wide from the close.
The Port side club once again tried to organise their play by keeping the ball
but their moves did not last long as Sporting’s defence were too strong to
break until the half time.
Vasco coach Eban Misquita brought in Minesh Kunkolkar and Steven Colaco
replacing Savio Dias and Anil at the half time to sharpen them in attack.Just
after the changing over, Sporting had almost scored the second through George
D’Souza’s perfect free-kick but Vasco keeper brilliantly fisted it over the
crossbar.
Just 10 minutes after the resumption of play, Vasco found their equaliser
through Beneston Barreto. The front man made a clinical touch-in to Franky
Oliveira’s diagonal pass in the box. However, they could not manage to hold
Sporting for a long as within next 15 minutes Sporting went back into the lead
through Victorino. The striker dribbled past keeper Suresh in the box and
calmly placed the ball into the net making it 2-1 for the Flaming Orange.
Pumped up by the goal, Sporting scored three more goals in the last 10 minutes.
First, Victorino completed his hat trick when he easily cut past two defenders
while entering the box and beat the goalkeeper in his last touch. A few minutes
later, substitute Marcus Mascarenhas scored from close the close, off George’s
cross from the left. While George’s powerful free-kick from the edge of the box
which hit the horizontal bar and finished in the nylons making it 5-1 for the
Panjim based club.
Vasco coach Misquita was disappointed after his side suffered a big marginal
defeat in the opening match as he said “It was defensive errors that cost us.
We need to improve in that department.”

About The Exhibition :

This selection of photo books focuses on artists exploring memory and the
interweaving of its personal and collective dimensions.

In any society, individuals have always found their own identity and
trajectory shaped by the hazards of politics, conflict and war. The
accounts emanating from these experiences often embody the interplay
between personal remembrances and the collective consciousness projected by
traditions, myths and contemporary media representations.

The works presented here offer new paths of documenting events and ponders
the power memory has over photography. The authors take us through a myriad
of forms of expression, from blurring the line between documentary and
fiction to revisiting existing narratives ; from discovering personal and
scientific archives to exploring mythology through a contemporary lens.
This BINDbox will hold landscapes, objects and chronicles from around the
world serving as testimonials to historical events.

*The Art of Portraiture: A Photographic Exploration*

*“A portrait! What could be simpler and more complex, more obvious and more
profound.” —Charles Baudelaire*

*In the 21st century, with the rising onslaught of social media and the
ubiquitous ‘selfie’ the oldest form of recoding a face and body language,
the portrait, becomes even more important.*

*The portrait, as an art form, has been around for over 5000 years, much
before the advent of photography. *

*The purpose of the portrait has been much more than just to record. It is
a commentary on the sitter or the subject – making complex structures of
identity. *

*In this workshop we will look at portraits in painting, sculpture, film
and of course photography followed by discussion. There will be a photo
booth set up for demo portraits and the students will be given assignments
to bring back. The purpose of the workshop is for students to learn how to
photograph powerful portraits of themselves, the self-portrait, and that of
their subjects employing the various skills they will be exposed to during
the course of the workshop.*

*These two weekend workshops will make the for students think, look within
themselves and of their subjects by asking questions, spending time
communicating. The workshop will enhance their powers of observation and
awareness, while augmenting their aesthetic eye. *

*About* *Alakananda :*

*Alakananda Nag is a Goa based photographer. She graduated in Documentary
Photography & Photojournalism from the International Center of Photography,
New York.*

*Though her training has been in traditional documentary, she has chosen to
flow into a more conceptual / contemporary style, while sticking to her
documentary roots in the research and fact-finding. *

*Her interest lies in personal stories and the ideas of the self - the
relationship between the individual and that, which is gone. *

*She has been a participating artist in the Fulbright funded prestigious
international project Following the Box, where twelve artists have worked
on a set of 128 found photographs from 1945 taken by an American soldier
during WWII around Calcutta. *

*She has been working on the Armenian community of Calcutta for over five
years. It started as a documentary photo project in 2010, and transformed
into an idea dealing with fading away of the community and the
photographers own dilemma of letting go and holding on. *

*She has embarked on a three part series dealing with the same idea.*

*She has been published in Vodafone Women of Substance (coffee table book).

Following an open and invited call last year, over 50 proposals have been
selected based on the following criteria: (1) concept / intent (idea,
resonance with festival objectives), (2) learning impact (knowledge,
understanding, skill, attitude, value, behavior, progression), (3)
experiential opportunity (passive, interactive, immersive, participative),
and (4) feasibility of execution (logistics, sustainability, budget).

SNIPS FROM THE PROGRAM

Physics: Robin Meier is composing a new musical score based on satellite
data obtained from the European Space Agency. Alongside, he is sculpting
the first-of-its kind musical instrument made with a meteorite. A local
brass brass band will perform the score as a collaboration with Robin and
Dmitry VTOL Morozov. This project is supported by Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts
Council.

Philosophy: S Bhuvuneshwari will share concepts of space as discussed in
Indian philosophy through a talk which explores the gamut from cosmology to
metaphysics bearing the Indian context in mind.

Politics: Aalto University Media Lab from Finland opens up a line of
communication that transports between Helsinki and Goa. New Media students
design two installations, one in Helsinki and the other at the festival,
where the audience interacts and communicates with others, in a way that
evokes questions around power, nationality, borders, race and
relationships. This project is supported by Aalto University.

Perception: Akash and Thomas from Sound.Codes are archiving and recreating
landmarks and heritage spaces in Goa by mapping their acoustics. The
installation will be set up in a multi-room venue - inviting people to walk
through it experiencing a wide canvas of local stories set in the original
acoustic experience of Goan landmarks.

Our Shortlist: https://goo.gl/4SE6Nj

The program is designed with a something for
everyone approach targeted at various age groups and demographics, ranging
from children to the elderly, and inclusive of migrant communities and
other underexposed groups. Perspectives from 19 countries are represented
in the entire program, with 50% of the participation from India and a Goa
special lineup is also being curated. The festival will include five key
programs: public installations, live experiences/performances, workshops,
talks/panels, and screenings. The festival has focused on a balance between
academic, artistic, and interdisciplinary interventions to enable rich
exchanges for the future.

The festival is hosted in partnership with The Corporation of the City of
Panjim. It will be free for all to attend and expects 50,000 visitors
including inquirers from cities of India, local Goan families, school and
college students, and tourists from near and far. It is positioned to end
just before IFFI in Goa. The volunteer-run team has recently launched a
crowdfunding campaign (http://ket.to/space2017) to help them meet their
fundraising goal and are looking for sponsors aligned with their values of
informal learning, interdisciplinary approaches, and making interdependence
visible.

A number of embassies and cultural centers are supporting participation for
foreign participants: Fundação Oriente (Goa), Alliance Française (Goa),
Italian Embassy Cultural Centre (Mumbai Section), Pro Helvetia - Swiss Arts
Council (Delhi). We are seeking support from others as well.

[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE -- M7 FC's Spartacus-King of the week from June 5-11

2017-06-02 Thread carol

M7 FC's Spartacus-King of the week from June 5-11
PANJIM: M7 Football Club will organise their third edition of the
Spartacus-King of the week futsal tournament from June 5-11, at Don
Bosco court, Panjim.
After enjoying huge success in the previous two editions, M7 FC have
taken a step ahead and will conduct their third edition of the Spartacus
futsal tournament over a period of a week.
The seven-day tournament will feature 24 teams including outstation
team- Maccabi Mumbai battling it out in a league-cum-knockout phase for
the ultimate crown.
"We had huge success in the last two editions. We had over 40-50 teams
participating in the two-day tournament, so this year we thought of
playing the tournament in a league-cum-knockout format," said Jesvil
D'Souza tournament director.
"This year it's going to be even more interesting as we have
international and national futsal players plying their trade in this
tournament," added Jesvil.
The 24 teams have been potted in eight groups. The top two teams of each
group will qualify for the round of 16 clashes.
“It's unfair to see a team that loses a match goes home. Since there are
teams participating from different corners of the State, they deserve to
get a second chance, so we have the

league system this year,” he explained.
Following are the teams participating in the tournament: Group A: Lazy
Boys, Decca Boys, 5 Tomatoes; Group B: Highlander FC, Boom Boom Dempo,
Double Black; Group C: La Masia, Siolim United, United Brothers;

*About Saraswati :*

*Paul Klee : "Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible
the hidden.”*

Saraswati's works offer a window from which we can take an imaginative leap
to the free spirited world of our childhood.

The pieces playfully pique interest through their quirky presence and
subtle details, capturing the intimacy of her process ,while harnessing
her lively energy and intuitive style .

She achieves stunning results with her experimental merging of form and
colour, mixing oxydes , glazes and underglazes like an alchemist and using
materials ranging from Paperclay to Stoneware to Porcelain with metal,
wood and glass.

Born in Russia, into a family that lived and breathed ceramics, Saraswati began
to work with clay at the age of 12 and has been in love with it ever
since. Starting
off young, under the tutelage of her ceramicist mother, Anna in Russia,
Renata would spend time watching her stepfather, a still-life
photographer, create still life compositions in every corner of the house
, using ceramics to substitute what he couldn't find in objects.

She is the co-founder of the *White Peacock Clay Club* at *Auroville* with
her mother Anna who works at intricate paintings on porcelain and is now
joined by her daughter , Masha, who sculpts characters from Russian fairy
tales using ceramic.

Saraswati's works reflect a desire to not just use ceramic art as a
metaphor for various aspects of the human experience but also to transport
us to a transcendental space where we begin to see that the material world
is only one among many realities open to human awareness.

[Goanet] Press Release - Fontainhas Exchange , Session Three : RESIST REVEAL RENEW - Orijit Sen and Aniruddha Sengupta in conversation with

2017-04-03 Thread Gitanjali Gallery
*Gallery Gitanjali and Alaknanda Nag are delighted to announce the third
session of Fontainhas Exchange, entitled RESIST REVEAL RENEW on 7th April,
2017 at 6pm .*

When silence is no longer an option... join the conversation at Gallery
Gitanjali with Orijit Sen and Aniruddha Sengupta on why art needs to be
more political and public than ever before.

Orijit will be taking us through his journey on creating satirical works
that focus on dissent.

*Orijit's Imposter series and few other works will be on display during the
Fontainhas Exchange session.*

In* Imposters*, artist and graphic designer Orijit Sen sets out to pay
homage to the language of the poster, the screen printed poster in
particular. The poster has been employed for various purposes throughout
history – as a means of mass communication, propaganda and public art. Sen
explores the medium that has begun disappearing from public life and has
largely been replaced by large-scale, commercial digital printing. While
the internet and social media now occupy the primary position as the space
of public discourse, the traditional poster continues to survive within
certain specific contexts such as political rallies, social movements, or
on college campuses. In Imposters, Sen creates limited edition screen
prints on hand made paper. But unlike conventional posters that act as
announcements for future events, Sen’s work will be ‘Imposters’,
retrospectively created, using full advantage of hindsight to investigate
and play upon some of the influential art, literature, cinema, events,
people and ideas.

The images and texts on these posters constitute a personal commentary on
the many cultural and political histories that we simultaneously strive to
live with and live by. In unpacking the iconic imagery of traditional
poster art, these graphic renditions move between homage and spoof, between
the real and the imaginary, between fiction and fact,” says Sen.

“I am particularly fascinated by the ways that posters balance the need to
grab attention with arresting graphics and type, and then draw the viewer
into a more nuanced or layered exposition of the subject at hand. Imposters
pays homage to this language of posters,” says Sen

to pressure candidates standing for election to make their stance clear. For
the past weeks, political parties have been coming out with their
manifestoes, many of which ignore the issues that voters in Goa most care
about.

[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE: Vote only for candidates & parties that endorse the Goenchi Mati Manifesto

2017-02-01 Thread Roxanne Coutinho
*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *

Date of release: 1-Feb-2017

*Vote only for candidates & parties that endorse the Goenchi Mati Manifesto*

*GOA (1-Feb-2017):* On Saturday 4th Feb, people from across 40
constituencies will be casting their precious vote for a new Government. As
it is our right to vote, we also have a duty to vote justly, and the
responsibility to hold our elected leaders accountable to their
commitments.

The Goenchi Mati Movement calls upon all citizens to elect those candidates
and other political parties that have endorsed and supported their
manifesto, and pledged to implement it faithfully. Except 18-Poriem, the
other 39 constituencies have at least one party / candidate contesting the
elections that supports the manifesto. Citizens can check which parties /
candidates support our manifesto at http://goenchimati.org/election2017.

The Movement is asking for the implementation of some simple Constitutional
principles in the management of our natural resources, especially the State
of Goa’s mineral wealth. Minerals are our shared inheritance and do not
belong to mining lease-holders or the government, but to the people of the
state, poor and rich and it is our duty to ensure that we protect our
inheritance for future generations. Only if we do that, may we consume the
fruit. Any loss is a loss to our children and all future generations for
Goa.

The Movement proposes a model for mining that protects the rights of
children and of future generations of Goa. It also dramatically reduces the
potential for looting that is associated with mining, which has caused
tremendous environmental, economic and social damage and corrupted several
sectors in Goa.

This election we have a unique opportunity that must not be given away, an
opportunity to vote wisely and make the right choice to decide the fate of
Goa and her generations to come.

The Goenchi Mati Movement is a single issue movement which is by policy not
aligned with political parties. GMM has asked parties to endorse and

that need to be preserved for future generations, and that in the case of
sub-soil minerals, the states are trustees on behalf of the people.

The report explores the value of saving money from minerals in a
non-wasting asset such as a permanent fund, and redistributing any real
income to citizens. It emphasizes the importance of considering creative
responses to avoid the risks and costs associated with the “natural
resource curse.”

The report acknowledges the inputs of Rahul Basu from the Goenchi Mati
Movement. The following quotes are taken from Chapter 13 of the report (The
‘Other Indias’: Two Analytical Narratives (Redistributive and Natural
Resources) on States’ Development).

"*13.46 One way to increase citizens’ participation is via creation of a
dedicated Fund to which all mining revenue must accrue. The assumption here
is that minerals are part of the commons, owned by the state as trustee for
the people – including future generations. Therefore, the revenue from the
natural resources should be saved in a non-wasting asset- in a Permanent
Fund. The real income accrued by the Fund can be redistributed to citizens
affected by and having a stake in the extraction of the resource. (Box 1)"*

*"13.49 These measures have never been tried in India. But permanent funds
have been utilised effectively in many other countries, while pilot
projects for UBI are beginning. Introducing these mechanisms in India could
be contemplated, if only because their risks seem small compared with the
costs that would accrue if the "natural resource curse" materialised on
Indian soil, as it has in so many other countries around the world. *

*"13.50 In sum, large bounties-either in the form of redistributed
resources or natural resources- can create surprising pathologies, even in
democratic India. Recognizing and responding to them creatively will be
important to avoid making the errors of history.*

*"Box 1: Supreme Court of India Judgement on Goa Mining*

*The judgment of the Supreme Court of India in WP 435/2012 (Goa Foundation
vs UoI & Ors, the Goa mining case), was the culmination of a series of
landmark judgements on the subject of managing natural resources in public
domain. In this case, the apex court ordered a cap on mining as well as the
creation of a Goan Iron Ore Permanent Fund to meet the ends of
inter-generational equity and sustainable development. When considered
along with earlier SC judgments on the public trust doctrine, notably CA
4154/2000 (Fomento Resorts & Anr vs Minguel Martins & Ors), and on the
disposal of natural resources, notably WP 423/2010 (CPIL & Ors vs UoI &
Ors, the 2G spectrum case), a new picture emerges for minerals.*

*What implications does the SC judgment carry for natural resource
management?*

*Natural resources, including minerals, are a shared inheritance that needs
to be preserved for future generations. As sub-soil minerals are largely
owned by the States, and offshore minerals by the Centre, the states are
the trustees on behalf of the people. The cap on mining in Goa is to ensure
the availability of minerals over several generations as well as to limit
the environmental damage from permitted extraction.*

*The proposal for exploring the creation of a Goan Iron Ore Permanent Fund
is notable for being the first that has potential to be established by
judicial action. Norway and over 50 other countries / sub-nations have
created Permanent Funds based on extracting economic rent from oil or other
natural resources. The oldest of these funds, in Texas, dates back to 1876.*
"

Rahul Basu of GMM said: “We are happy that the Government of India is also
considering implementing the core principles of the Goenchi Mati Movement.
We hope the people and the politicians of Goa also keep the use of our
natural resources and land at the core of their voting choices for the
assembly elections. We cannot afford a third failed government, a third
breach of the people’s trust.”

Claude Alvares of the Goa Foundation said that “the mention of the
Permanent Fund proposals in the Economic Survey now indicates that though
Goa was the first state to get such a Fund – because of the judgement in
the Goa Foundation mining case – the idea of such a Fund is now being
considered for all other states as well. This is a great contribution from
Goa to the people of this country.”

[Goanet] PRESS RELEASE: Goenche Mogi Citizens Meet

2017-01-25 Thread Roxanne Coutinho
*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE *

Date of release: 25-Jan-2017

*Goenche Mogi Citizens Meet*

*GOA (25-Jan-2016): *The Goenchi Mati Movement (GMM) calls all Goans to
join the citizens meeting being held on Republic Day at the Panjim
Municipal Garden. Over 40 groups from around Goa working on a variety of
different issues will be there. What unites us is the desire to hand over
Goa to the next generation with a safe and happy environment, just as we
found it. Politicians and election candidates may participate, but will be
asked to sit and listen and will not be allowed to address the assembled
voters.

The “Rally for Goa” will take place in the Panjim Garden, next to the
Panjim Church (and not Azad Maidan). It will start at 3 pm. There will be
more activities than speeches. Cantarists and comedians have agreed to
entertain the people assembled at appropriate individuals.

The cartoons of Alexyz on issues affecting Goa and its environment will be
at a special display at the garden.

All people attending will have the opportunity to discuss issues with 40
odd organisations involved in social and environmental issues from north to
south Goa.

We call upon all Goans to meet with the front line activists, understand
what their issues are, and to join us in making these demands to all the
political candidates standing for election on February 4, 2017. You can
help change Goa's politics forever. Don't give up this chance. It will not
come back again.

Claude Alvares of the Goa Foundation (one of the organisers) said: “This is
the first and only public meeting where citizens will be able to post their
grievances and understand issues faced by Goans in other part of the State.
We shall then organise to have a list of these issues handed over to all
the political parties and to all individual election candidates. This is
not a meeting to support any party or candidate.”

The Goenchi Mati Movement is a single issue movement which is by policy not
aligned with political parties. GMM has asked parties to endorse and
incorporate the Goenchi Mati Manifesto into their manifestos for the Goa
Assembly elections on Feb 4. The Goenchi Mati Manifesto is available at
goenchimati.org/manifesto. It is available in English
, with
translations into Konkani (Devnagari, Romi
), Marathi
, Hindi
 and
Portuguese .
Show your support at goenchimati.org/support. *Aamchi Mati Aamka Zai!*

List of the organising NGOs and associations is attached separately to this
email.
