[GreenYouth] The Climate Imperative By Rajendra Kumar Pachauri (fwd from countercurrents)

2009-07-08 Thread Venugopalan K M
The Climate Imperative

*By Rajendra Kumar Pachauri*

07 July, 2009
*Project Syndicate * http://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/pachauri1

*NEW DELHI *– Today, international action on climate change is urgent and
essential. Indeed, there can no longer be any debate about the need to act,
because the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), of which I am
chairman, has established climate change as an unequivocal reality beyond
scientific doubt.

For instance, changes are taking place in precipitation patterns, with a
trend toward higher precipitation levels in the world’s upper latitudes and
lower precipitation in some sub-tropical and tropical regions, as well as in
the Mediterranean area. The number of extreme precipitation events is also
increasing – and are increasingly widespread. Moreover, the frequency and
intensity of heat waves, floods, and droughts are on the rise.

This change in the amount and pattern of rainfall has serious implications
for many economic activities, as well as for countries’ preparedness to
handle emergencies such as large-scale coastal flooding or heavy snowfall.

Some parts of the world are more vulnerable than others to these changes.
The Arctic region, in particular, has been warming at twice the rate of the
rest of the globe. Coral reefs, mega-deltas (which include cities like
Shanghai, Kolkata, and Dhaka), and small island states are also extremely
vulnerable to rising sea levels.

Other negative effects of climate change include possible reductions in crop
yields. In some African countries, for example, yields could decline by as
much as 50% by 2020. Climate change would also lead to increased water
stress, which by 2020 could affect 75-250 million people in Africa alone.

Overall, temperature increases are projected to increase by the year 2100
within a range of 1.1 to 6.4˚C. In order to focus on this set of outcomes,
the IPCC has come up with a best estimate at the lower end of this range of
1.8˚C, and 4˚C at the upper end. Even at the lower estimate, the
consequences of climate change could be severe in several parts of the
world, including an increase in water stress, serious effects on ecosystems
and food security, and threats to life and property as a result of coastal
flooding.

There also may be serious direct consequences for human health if climate
change is not checked, particularly increased morbidity and mortality as a
result of heat waves, floods, and droughts. Moreover, the distribution of
some diseases would change, making human populations more vulnerable.

Because the impact of climate change is global, it is essential that the
world as a whole take specific measures to adapt. But it is already clear
that the capacity of some communities to adapt will quickly be exceeded if
climate change goes unmitigated.

To help these most vulnerable communities, it is essential for the world to
devise a plan of action to limit the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs).
Several scenarios have been assessed by the IPCC, and one that would limit
future temperature increase to between 2.0-2.4˚C would require that
emissions peak no later than 2015, and decline thereafter. The rate of
decline would then determine the extent to which the worst effects of
climate change can be avoided.

The IPCC also found that the cost of such a strict effort at mitigation
would not exceed 3% of global GDP in 2030. Moreover, there are enormous
co-benefits to mitigation: lower emissions of GHGs would be accompanied by
lower air pollution and increased energy security, agricultural output, and
employment. If these co-benefits were taken fully into account, that price
tag of 3% of GDP in 2030 would be substantially lower, perhaps even
negative. The world could actually enhance economic output and welfare by
pursuing a path of mitigation.

The need for international action, therefore, stems from two important
observations arising out of the IPCC’s work. First, if we do not mitigate
emissions of GHGs, the negative effects of climate change will be difficult
to reverse, implying great hardship and possibly danger to mankind and other
species.

Second, the benefits of mitigating emissions of GHGs are so overwhelming
that this, combined with the prospect of the harm resulting from inaction,
makes it imperative for the world to devise an international response and a
plan of action. Given the challenge facing us, the magnitude and nature of
which were clearly brought out by the IPCC, the Copenhagen Conference later
this year must produce a multi-lateral agreement that deals adequately with
climate change.

R. K. Pachauri, a Nobel Laureate, is Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change and Director-General of the Energy Resources Institute.

Women And Negative Stereotypes:
An End Before A Start

*By Divya Bhargava *

06 July, 2009
*Countercurrents.org*

We may be reluctant to believe that discrimination against individuals
because of their sex, race, age, sexual orientation or health status still
exits in institutions in most countries. We also may not want to accept the
fact that sexual violence is common in all culture, that women are victims
of rape, battering and sexual harassment each day, despite legislation
prohibiting such violence, common policing, workplace policies, counseling
and training programs exist. Yet this is the reality for most women.

The fact that individuals are likely to think of man when they hear a word
surgeon illustrates how we all hold beliefs, attitudes, the stereotype that
influence our perception of the world around us. Which sex do you associate
with elementary school teacher? With model? With engineer? Most individuals
still indicates that elementary school teachers are female, models are
female, and engineers are male. Individuals also mark the cupation if they
believe the sex of the person performing this job is typical. Stereotypes
refer to individuals cognitions that typically do not correspond to reality.
A stereotype is a picture in the head not an accurate mirror of the real
world.

Stereotypes occur when individuals are classifieds by others as having
something in common because they are members of a particular group or
category of people. Gender stereotypes are a psychological process which
illustrates structured sets of beliefs about the personal attributes of men
and women. An awareness of the contents of gender role stereotypes begins in
the preschool years and is rather well-developed by the time children enter
first grade. Parents are among the more important socializing agents for
children in shaping values, beliefs and behaviors related to gender.
Furthermore knowing the sex of the baby conjures up all kinds of personality
characteristics and physical attributes even when these factors are not
present in the child. Parents communicate their stereotypes to children in
numerous ways. Boys are given building blocks, sports equipment and model
vehicles. Girls, on the other hand, are encouraged to play with dolls, dolls
houses and miniature household appliances.

*Cultural images of women:-*

Culture ideas, symbols, norms and values play a significant role in the
creation of women images and the differentiation of gender roles. The
purpose of the present article is to understand the images of femininity in
Indian society from ancient to modern times. India, a heterogeneous society,
presents conflicting women images. The normative model image of Indian
womanhood has displayed remarkable consistency. Images of women have not
remained static and have undergone numerous changes. However, certain basic
models have widespread acceptance. Various cultural images of women:-
Pativrata- unconditional devotion to husband, Glorified Motherhood, Bharat
Mata Image. First at the societal plane, the perception of different
categories of women is distinctly shaped/conditioned by the popularly
accepted female images/stereotypes. Secondly, at the interpersonal level
within the family situation, these images frequently impinge in a variety of
ways. Indian girls grow up with deep rooted sense of fear and insecurity
which not only restricts their social mobility in the mundane day to day
life but also often psychologically cripples them to face the hardships of
life in general and resist gender based discrimination in particular. These
gender dichotomies, flowing almost directly from the popular images fostered
most significantly, these images in most Indian families. Thirdly, and
perhaps most significantly, these images leave a deep imprint upon women’s
self-perception.

*Women in Advertisement:-*

Advertising has been a prime target of attack and scrutiny. The basic
explanation for the critical focus on sex role portrayal in advertising lies
in the close relationship, which exists between advertising, the consumer
goods industry and the crucial economic role of women as consumers.
Generally it is shown in advertisement a woman’s goal in life is to attract
and attain a man:-women are shown in advertising as always young and
attractive. They are frequently depicted as sexual objects. Women in
advertisements are restricted to the home and isolated from other women
outside home, man is her favorite companion. Domesticity is the second role
of two dimensional image of femininity in advertising.

*Sex Stereotyping in the Media:-*

Far more dangerous than the overtly obscene advertisements are the sexual
stereotypes that are found in different media. The Indian version of sex
stereotyping would have all women behaving like mythological sita and
savitri- docile, submissive, sacrificing, sentimental, superstitious, and
incapable of rational action, their primary duty being wives, companions and
devoted mothers. Films

[GreenYouth] FWD : Iran And America: The Will To Change By Yacov Ben Efrat

Iran And America: The Will To Change

*By Yacov Ben Efrat*

29 June, 2009
*Challenge-mag.com * http://www.challenge-mag.com/

Two weeks have passed since the Iranian elections of June 12, 2009, and the
storm aroused by the putative result refuses to die. What's happening there
is not a democratic disagreement, as the Emir of Qatar described it, but a
conflict between two well-defined forces over the country's future. We
cannot know who really won the election, but even supposing it was incumbent
president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, his victory has revealed a deep schism.
The struggle concerns the nature of government in Iran, and the results of
this struggle will extend much farther than the questionable election
results.

The huge demonstrations of the first week reflected lack of confidence in
Iran's electoral system, not merely because the regime can easily fabricate
the result, but also because, at base, this system is far from reflecting
the will of the people. Political parties are outlawed, so the choice is
among personalities. In order to prevent the election of anyone who is
anti-regime, every candidate must be approved by the Committee for
Preservation of the Constitution, whose task is to ensure fidelity to
Islamic rule.

Among 475 initial candidates this time (including 42 women), only three men
were permitted to challenge the incumbent. Thus anyone who wanted to depose
Ahmadinejad had to vote for one of these. As it turned out, Mir Hossein
Mousavi, who had been prime minister under the Ayatollah Khomeini, garnered
support from most of those who were fed up with Ahmadinejad and his patron,
the supreme religious authority in Iran, Ali Khamenei.

What caused hundreds of thousands to pour into the streets and risk their
lives? How did it happen that the Supreme Authority lost his authority? Iran
is an enormous exporter of oil, like several other third-world nations, and
its economic situation is no better than theirs. It is no accident that the
president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, came out in support of Ahmadinejad.
Both countries produce oil; both suffer from chronic unemployment, rising
inflation and poverty that cries to the heavens. Chavez is the idol of the
masses. Ahmadinejad too, by his way of dressing and talking, his
anti-imperialist positions and his relentless enmity toward the US and
Israel, presents himself as a revolutionary and a friend to the poor.

It seems, however, that many Iranians remain unimpressed by Ahmadinejad's
rhetoric. More than anything, they are troubled by the suppression of human
freedoms, the cruel subjugation of women, and the imposition of Islamic
fundamentalism as a way of life. If we add the economic backwardness of Iran
and the religious bureaucracy's control of its oil revenues, we get a
ticking bomb. When the regime uses terror against the Iranian people, this
will only speed the moment of explosion.

For the fact is that thirty years since the ousting of the Shah, the Iranian
Islamic Republic has not succeeded in providing its people with a decent
life. Ahmadinejad plumes himself with the feathers of the poor, but the
location of those who vote for him shows Iran's failure to propel its
society beyond the poverty line. According to the meager information we
have, it was the urban population – the focus of economic and cultural power
in every modern society – that voted against Ahmadinejad. The poor, living
in remote villages throughout the country, may form the electoral majority,
but their contribution toward building the society is small. What's more,
where there is no freedom of assembly and the regime is all-powerful,
nothing is easier than to buy the loyalty of those who live on charity.

The Iranian protest movement is not a foreign import. Nor does it resemble
elitist, reactionary protest movements like the orange revolution in
Ukraine. Iran's green movement reflects an authentic will to change an
oppressive regime that has impeded the country's economic, social and
cultural development. But this movement has a problem. It lacks leadership.
Mousavi has been a channel, to be sure, for expressing revulsion from the
regime, but he cannot encompass the unorganized currents that have now begun
to flow. For this reason the regime will succeed, temporarily, in
suppressing the demonstrations and imposing its will on the people.

Yet the green movement will prove to be a landmark. The division within the
regime between the reformists and the conservatives did not first emerge as
a result of the demonstrations: rather, it made them possible. That division
has existed ever since the death of Khomeini in 1989. It was expressed in
the election of reformist candidate Muhammad Khatami to two terms, from 1997
until 2005. But Khatami disappointed his constituents. Against the
determined opposition of the Supreme Authority, Ali Khamenei, he failed to
implement the reforms he'd promised: to eliminate corruption and bring more
democracy.

[GreenYouth] Indian universities face misconduct allegations

Indian universities face misconduct allegations

Killugudi
Jayaraman1http://www.nature.com/nm/journal/v15/n7/full/nm0709-723c.html#a1

   1. Bangalore, India

Introduction

A report by the *Times of India* newspaper alleging that admissions to
medical school might have been sold for money at two private institutions
has stirred controversy in India. The newspaper has said it caught officials
on tape demanding as much as Rs 4 million ($80,000) for admission to medical
degree programs without providing receipts.

In the wake of these allegations, the country's education ministry has
ordered an official probe into the claims. The two institutions, Sri
Ramachandra University and Sree Balaji Medical College, affiliated with
Bharat University—both in the south Indian state of Tamilnadu—risk
derecognition if found guilty, education ministry spokesperson Mamta Verma
told *Nature Medicine*.

Dayanand Dongaonkar, secretary general of the Association of Indian
Universities in New Delhi is waiting for the outcome of the probe, saying
that we will decide about what action to take on our members once the
government investigation is over.

Ramachandra University's vice chancellor S. Rangaswami did not reply to
request for comments. The university has an ongoing research alliance with
Harvard University in the US.

We have been in contact with the leadership of Sri Ramachandra University,
with which we have a professional services agreement, and have expressed our
wish to see the matter resolved in appropriate fashion, says Chris Railey,
director of communications and marketing for Partners Harvard Medical
International.

Balaji College, the newspaper found from the college's website, was chaired
by S. Jagathrakshakan, a junior minister in the government.

But after the exposé his name reportedly disappeared from the website. *Nature
Medicine* was unable to reach S. Jagathrakshakan for comment.

The admission scam has prompted the education ministry to review the
functioning of 123 universities, including 55 medical colleges that obtained
the 'deemed status' in last five years.

2009-07-08 Thread Anil M
Deshabhimani should have apologized for carrying that story on the front
page rather than for the mistake. There were reports of starvation in tribal
areas during Monsoon in some channels last week. Then how come Abdul
Rasheed’s proletarian , anti imperialist newspaper carry a “thetamastra”
story on the front page??
